Lead Pastor — Pastor Jim Marian

“But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.” – Acts 16:25 Imagine you wake up in the morning, and it’s a beautiful day. You praise God as you head out into the world, but the day turns out to be nothing like you expected. People are turning on you, anger and pain surrounds you; even loved ones seem to be against you. The noise of the world becomes almost too loud to bear! Or worse yet, what if by the end of the day you find yourself unjustly accused, mercilessly beaten with rods and whips, then put in jail. You’re sitting in a dark and dingy jail where the air is foul with the smell of urine and body odor filling the cell. Your hands and feet are put in heavy, wooden stocks and you can barely move as your muscles contract with pain. The prisoners next to you are serious criminals and look at you with suspicion and harmful intent. Would there still be a place in your heart for prayer? Would you want to sing praises? Paul and Silas experienced this terrible situation while sharing the Good News about Jesus in the city of Philippi (read Acts 16:11-33 for the whole story). They were beaten within inches of their lives, yet their hearts were not broken. Their hearts were filled with the love of Jesus and out of their mouths came the joy of His Spirit, in song and in prayer. How could gazing at Jesus in prayer and praise transform your worst days? Read James 1:2-3 and memorize it if you can. When times get tough, just open your mouth (like Paul and Silas) and sing His praises in thanksgiving! You might also want to tell God one thing you love about Him. Then try it again and again and again until His joy fills you and you see Him as bigger than your circumstances. Grace and Peace, – Pastor Jim Marian

Associate Pastor of Congregational Care & Church Administration — Pastor Cindy Shively

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as

you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 15:13 What joy to see all the flowers blooming and trees budding! After a long winter, spring is here, and summer will follow! Our Grace of Christ Family has also been through a season of waiting, but new life has arrived for us as well. Pastor Jim Marian and his family bring a breath of fresh air to us. First of all, a big thank you to the Pastor Nominating Committee for their good work in discerning God’s call and bringing Pastor Jim Marian to Yakima and Grace of Christ! And, thank you to each one of you for your prayers during this time of transition. God is faithful! Pastor Jim brings a fresh perspective, creative ideas, a strong desire to nurture God’s people, a passion for those who do not yet know the Lord, and energy. He combines a deep respect for the history of our church with the vital priority of reaching younger families to ensure our church flourishes in both the present and the future. Pastor Jim also cares for our staff, is a great team player, and it has been a great encouragement to work with him. With all of this said, we can all be overflowing with hope! We serve a God of hope, who longs to fill us with joy and peace as we trust in Him, stepping out in faith, trying some new ministries, and revitalizing others. Some changes may make us a little uncomfortable, but that’s to be expected if we genuinely want to reach people who need to know the hope of the Lord. So, thank you ahead of time for your willingness to stretch a little so others can have the opportunity to know God loves them, too! If we resist change, we will simply remain on the same trajectory, and miss out on all that God wants to do in and through us as His people. A little over a year ago, our Session decided we want to focus priorities on youth, families, and men. The Pastor Nominating Committee communicated this to all of the candidates during their search process. Pastor Jim is deeply committed to 3

helping all of us do whatever it takes to reach younger families, and to provide opportunities for them to get connected to our church family, and grow in their faith. We are confident that as we step out in faith, and trust the Lord, we will overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit! We want our entire church family to help make a difference in reaching the next generation. Whether this may mean volunteering with our Student Ministries, KidZone, VBS, leading a Growth Group, helping in worship, or hospitality (greeting, ushering, connection center), serving as an Elder or Deacon, we are all needed! Thank you also for your prayers for our Student Ministry Director Search Team, which is well under way in seeking God’s person to be our next Director. Please pray for God’s clear direction in both the person and the timing. I am so grateful to be able to love and serve our Grace of Christ family. May we all partner together with God to help bring God’s Kingdom of Love from heaven down to earth. Please read this blessing slowly, and let it sink in deeply: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. – Romans 15:13

Missions WHAT IS CAMP HOPE? Camp Hope is a homeless encampment managed by Transform Yakima Together, in response to a need expressed by local city and county officials. The temporary 24-hour encampment consists of tents for the residents and will host up to 60 guests each night. Residents sign a Good Neighbor Agreement outlining expectations for behavior and are expected to provide up to 10 hours of volunteer service each week.

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS! Volunteers and staff put in hundreds of hours in the weeks prior to our opening to ensure that we were ready for our guests on March 22. Since then, community members have contributed over $10,000 in cash and materials to help us with the camp. Thank you!

HOW YOU CAN HELP Food has been an ongoing need as we are dependent on getting our supplies from the community, including ministries like Sonrise Outreach, Northwest Harvest Food bank and the Mission. We invite church groups to come out meet our guests and provide meals. Going forward, our main needs will be food, clothing, sleeping bags, and money to cover operating expenses not originally in the budget such as transportation, water, and gas and propane for our generator and cooking equipment.

LIVES ARE BEING CHANGED A church service is held on site each Sunday for those who want to attend. We have seen 14 individuals make decisions for Christ while at Camp. Here are some examples of how Camp Hope is fulfilling its name: David

got an apartment and a job. Betty and Mike, one of our couples are getting services at UGM. Two people that are now employed by Camp Hope, were previously in the shelters just a year ago and are grateful to serve. One woman told us, “ I used to sleep in the alley behind the Arco. Now I feel safe and like I belong.” A couple staying at the camp who had been in shelters in both Spokane and Olympia shared, “This is the first time we’ve gone to bed with food in our stomachs on a consistent basis for months.” Here is the testimony of one of our newer residents: “When I came to Camp Hope, I was treated like family by the staff. I didn’t look or smell good but a staff member allowed me to ride in his nice vehicle, just as I was. He bought me a soda and offered to help me because he cared about me. Camp Hope is a family of people that stick together doing what we can to help each other. Please help us become tax payers by providing us job opportunities and a means to get there so we can have our families back and provide for them.”

CREATING A CARING COMMUNITY Part of our values at Camp Hope is to create a caring community and we can sense the “We vibe” – not a “them and us.” We are grateful for these testimonies of God’s goodness and the positive environment of Camp Hope and we expect it to continue. One of the residents even came up with acronym for Camp Hope: We are incredibly grateful for the generosity and support of so many that have made Camp Hope possible. If you haven’t had a chance to come visit the camp yet, please come down, say hello, and get a tour. Thank you for your interest and support.

Grace of Christ Rejuvenated! “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” --Isaiah 43:18-19

Can you feel the excitement of the new things God is doing at Grace of Christ? We are blessed by the arrival of our new pastor, Jim Marian. He brings great enthusiasm and vision for leading Grace of Christ into the future. Session has set reaching young people and families as a top priority for Grace of Christ. With this in mind, a team has been commissioned by Session to rejuvenate our church building and give it an update. This will allow for growth and change, helping us remain a vital part of the Yakima Community for generations to come. It has been

30+ years since we have remodeled, and it is time for some new things! The team includes church members, staff, and session members who are excited about the possibilities of rejuvenating our beautiful building, while honoring its history and maintaining its architectural integrity. You will hear more about this as the team begins meeting to envision Grace of Christ Rejuvenated.

The King Does Not Beg

There are defining notes in one’s

life. They resonate so strongly that they

define who you are and refine who you become. When 13, I was in St. Peter and St. Paul Church

in Gloucestershire, England. I was on my knees rubbing a memorial brass when the vicar announced that the Americans had just landed a man on the moon. I was soon surrounded by Brits congratulating me for “your amazing achievement.” There I was shaking hands and accepting thanks for an accomplishment that was not my own, but rather that of my country. I'd become an incongruous ambassador, yet I knew God had orchestrated it. At 24, when John and I moved to Valdez, Alaska, we explored our limited church options. With no Presbyterian Church there, we were reticent when the best fit seemed to be the Baptists. Their pastor was a rounded jovial man who regularly donned a peach-colored pantsuit and I mentally dubbed him "The Great Pumpkin" or "TGP" for short!

At the end of each service, there was a ritual called “The Invitation.” This was a time when TGP would extend an invitation to those who would like to come forward for confession, membership, prayer or salvation. The 'aisle walk’ was an intimidating procedure for many. The pianist would play on... and on… while the believers remained firmly in their seats having no wish to share their sins with anyone but God, while the unsaved faced their own internal struggles. At TGP’s cue, the pianist would press on with yet another hymn, “allowing the Spirit to work.” I recoiled at that endless part of the service. One Sunday, the church pianist quit. TGP put out a call for a replacement. He added this request to “The Invitation” and its already lengthy interlude. Along with the 'unsaved,’ I faced a different internal struggle. I played piano by ear. I did not read music particularly well and I avoided playing publicly. My stomach turned. I knew I was being called to volunteer but I stubbornly refused to do that ‘aisle walk.’ After weeks of deliberation and no reprieve, I went to TGP after church. “Pastor, if you can’t find anyone else, I’ll play the piano.” I expected a grateful, “Praise the Lord!” That is not what I got. He looked me squarely in the eye.

Young lady, THE KING DOES NOT “BEG! ”

I was totally dumbfounded. “Either you play for Him because He has called you and you want to please HIM, or don’t. BUT HE’S NOT GOING TO BEG. If He calls you to service, it’s for YOUR good, not His.” The enormity of my presumptuousness horrified me as I heard another defining, albeit discordant, tone! I had wrongly assumed God's call was an imposition on me. That perspective collapsed immediately as I realized I was receiving another chance at ambassadorship. This time, not for the USA, but for the King of Glory. Yes, I eventually took that aisle walk. That first step of obedience led to a lifetime walk of worship, music and fellowship. 38 years later, I left a church so dear to me that I had no inclination to ever become part of another... until I walked into Grace of Christ. So now, I share this reflection with you: the King does not beg, but He does give a heart-felt invitation! – Roz Strang 6

GOD HEARS AND ANSWERS OUR PRAYERS Some of our members of Gracia de Cristo are meeting once a month after our service to pray for different needs. Here is one testimony from one of our sisters:

have been answered and my brother, who “hadMynotprayers communicated with my mother for many years, was touched by the Lord and called my mother to ask for her forgiveness and to tell her how much he loves her. I thank God for giving my mother the good news that her prodigal son has returned. Now he calls my mother every day.

We want to invite you to join us the first Sunday of every month at 6:00 P.M. in the chapel to experience a spiritual time with praise and prayer.

UPDATE ON CITIZENSHIP CLASS Our citizenship classes at Adams Elementary School have been in progress and we are approaching the end of our first quarter (10 weeks), meeting twice a week. Anna Estrada is our lead instructor from La Casa Hogar. Assisting her are volunteers from Grace of Christ: Cathy Campbell, Glen Williams, Janet Feldman, Derick Garcia and Carla & Jake Kupp. Also, Adams Elementary School is providing the classroom and set-up each week for us to meet. It is an amazing partnership between these three organizations to provide this wonderful opportunity for us and these future citizens of our country and city. About 40 people are taking the course as we study the Constitution and the way that our country was established many years ago. It is challenging for the students because they are learning new English words that they haven’t used before. You can imagine what it would be like if you were studying a foreign government in a second language.

We want to invite you to join us the first Sunday of every month at 6:00 P.M. in the chapel to experience a spiritual time with praise and prayer.

A nuestros estudiantes les encanta decir “We The People” "Nosotros el Pueblo"

10

Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church

Gracia de Cristo / English However, you should see the faces of these students light up, as they understand that our government and Constitution are based on “We the People.” Our students love to say “We the People” knowing someday, they will be part of this great nation. Being a part of this citizenship experience has been very positive and fulfilling. Each quarter a new citizenship class will be starting. If you are interested in being a volunteer representing Grace of Christ, please join us for a couple of evenings this quarter on a Monday or Wednesday evening and experience for yourself what it would be like to be a volunteer. Please call me for more information, Jake Kupp 509-961-5070.

ADAMS CELEBRATED MAY 5TH (CINCO DE MAYO) We want to share that on May 5 (Cinco de Mayo), Adams Elementary celebrated this great day with the community, parents, students and teachers of the school in an event full of fun with soccer games, in addition to the folkloric dancing, and a group of cheerleaders. Gracia de Cristo participated in the event and games, and provided the referees. There was only one yellow warning card, showing everyone had fun playing a fair game. Our brother Jake Kupp and others volunteers from our church were greeting all the children, and sharing their time with the Adams family.

“ One day children were brought to Jesus in the hope that He would lay hands on them and pray over them. The disciples shooed them off. But Jesus intervened: 'Let the children alone, don’t prevent them from coming to me. God’s kingdom is made up of people like these.' After laying hands on them, He left.” – Matthew 19:14-15 11

– Mateo 19:14-15

Mothers of Preschoolers

MOPS recently announced a new logo to better reflect the relationships fostered by women committed to finding a blessing within a group of other moms trying to become better moms. The eyelet in the center of the new logo represents two sides, such as two women holding hands, and embodies both unity and strength. Our local MOPS group has pressed hard to find unity in motherhood and showcase the strength found in women who are working tirelessly to raise children with grace and love. MOPS has been blessed with another year of ministry to moms of young families. We finished our year on May 19 with testimonies from ladies who wanted to share, and an

appreciation luncheon for our generous volunteers. MOPS thanks Grace of Christ Church for continuing to support this ministry as we assist in drawing moms and their families closer to Jesus. MOPS will host a play date the third Friday of June, July, and August, and will resume with regular meetings in September. Next year's theme is "Free Indeed" and we will be sure to bring blessings from God's word and truth to the hearts of those who attend. You can also stay up to date with events on our Facebook group, MOPS Grace of Christ Presbyterian, Yakima (2016-2017). Grace and Peace, Emily DeKorte

Charles Lewis’s parents were missionaries supported by our church some 70 years ago. Charles and his wife were also missionaries in Indonesia. They are retired and will be passing through Yakima in June. Fred and Pat Erickson would like to host at their home in Sawyer, a time to visit with Charles and Nelda Lewis, on Saturday evening, June 17 from 5pm to whenever. We will grill something yummy and guests may bring a salad or dessert to share. All are welcome, longtime friends or any who would like to be acquainted.
