Interim Head of Staff — Pastor Cindy Shively

Our Growing ECO Movement! Our denomination, ECO – A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians, is a growing movement of congregations and leaders committed to building flourishing churches that make disciples of Jesus Christ. We now have 249 congregations, and 376 pastors who have joined ECO! One of the hopes of ECO, in order to facilitate better relationships among our churches, is to try to keep Presbyteries from getting too big and spread out. Our Presbytery of Northwest and Alaska had grown quite large, so after prayers and careful planning, we have divided into two separate Presbyteries. The first is made up of the Alaskan Churches. The second is our brand new Presbytery, called, “Presbytery of the Northwest,” which includes 23 churches (and three in the process of entering) from Washington, and five churches and one church plant from Oregon. The Presbytery of the Northwest held its first meeting on January 27, 2015, in conjunction with our Synod National Meeting in Newport Beach, CA. One priority of ECO is their emphasis on every church being involved in church planting. It takes on all shapes and forms, and is one of the most effective modes of reaching people who are not yet involved in church. March 27th we have the joy of celebrating Easter with our Grace of Christ family. We truly serve a living God – Jesus is alive! He has risen from the dead! We are a people of hope, new life, and Holy Spirit power! We are moving forward during our own time of transition, forming a Pastor Nominating Committee (more to come on this in the April Grace Alive). We seek your continued prayers, as the Lord unfolds the next chapter for our Grace of Christ Family.

2

Please also pray for our Session, as we continue to seek God’s leading for our church family. Andy Stanley, in his book, Deep and Wide, reminds us the Greek word, “ekklesia,” although generally translated “church,” is more accurately defined as “a purposeful gathering of people, a movement, an expanding group of people sharing a unique identity and purpose.” We are God’s people, designed to reflect God’s grace and truth in our world, and together with the Holy Spirit, to carry out Jesus’ mission of bringing all people to a saving faith in Jesus Christ. What a joy to be on this journey together. The prophet Nehemiah reminds us, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. (Neh. 8:10) The psalmist reminds us, You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever. (Psalm 16:11) May the joy of the Lord fill us to overflowing as we grow together in grace! Pastor Cindy Shively

DISCIPLE: One who is learning and changing in the Way of Jesus MAKERS: One who intentionally becomes a Spiritual Parent (literal or figurative) to another Our hope as a church is to make space on Sunday mornings for all of us to learn more about what it means for us to BE DISCIPLES and to MAKE DISCIPLES. By having just one contemporary worship service we hope to: • Free up 45 minutes on Sunday mornings for deepening relationships of all sorts. • Give KidZone & Youth helpers the opportunity to participate in Worship Service AND Serve Kids, and more people / parents the opportunity to help with kids and youth. • Try something new in a workable time-frame, that will be refreshing and life-giving; especially to our families with children, and to the many people who serve and lead others on Sunday mornings.

Connecting Ministries — Jocelyn Larsen

We are The Church My boys were in the car with my sister when it happened. They drove past our church building - a huge, gorgeous brick building located conspicuously downtown, right on the main drag. “There’s your church!” my sister said, innocuously. “Well, that’s the place we go to church,” my 4-year-old corrected her, just as innocuously. “Our church is really just people.” My sister told me about it when they got home. We had quite a laugh. I had a bit of a proud parent moment. (You have to learn to take those, self-effacingly, whenever they come. They can feel so few and far between. Humble-pie parent moments are so much easier to come by.)

Shoot! This really ruins all of the things I most frequently say about church! Like, “C’mon guys, let’s get to church!” And “I just really want one of my neighbors to come to church with me.” And “Did you guys go to church last week?”

So, maybe church is just people. Maybe church could be just a group of people who take time away from regular life to be together and who think and pray about how they are called to minister back in the world for Christ’s sake. Maybe lots of different places and lots of different sizes of groups and Well, that’s the place we lots of different worship service go to church... Our church liturgies “count” as church.

But it started - or continued, perhaps - a conversation between me and my sis and others that has now been long is really just ongoing. I know that we are definitely not the first to stumble upon this question. But in our context, in our city, it is still a question being asked and answered and reasked and re-answered all around us. Many different people are answering it in many different places in many different ways.

So what exactly is church? Is it more of a place or is it more just people? How many people do I need to have a church? How often must we meet? What must our meetings look like? In Greek, the word is ekklēsía (from ek, “out from and to” + kaléō, “to call”) – properly, people called out from the world and to God, the outcome being the Church (the mystical body of Christ). people.

This can be quite alarming for those of us who have done church in a very particular way for our whole lives. What if our traditions are lost? What if no one sings hymns anymore? What if people dress differently than they always have? What if dedication to Scripture is practiced differently? What if we can’t afford to keep-up our events and our stuff and our building exactly as we always have? Rest assured. The Holy Spirit is moving. Still moving. He is fully apprised of the redefinition-of-church situation. Pray faithfully for wisdom and grace to live out our own spiritual lives with God. Pray for courage and perseverance to invest in the next generation of Church.

Warmly, – Jocelyn

Kaffee Klatsch Kaffee Klatsch is just around the corner. It will be held on Thursday, March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day - better wear a wee bit o’ green to avoid being pinched) at 2:00 p.m. in the Garden Room. Oh, do we have a treat for you! Yes, indeed! Tinker Rautenberg will be our featured speaker sharing her adventures as a member of the Moonmaid musical group. If you remember song titles like; It Don’t Mean a Thing (If it Ain’t Got that Swing), Red Roses for a Blue Lady, and the Atcheson, Topeka and Santa Fe, you’ll be right in your comfort zone. Tinker has performed all of those and many other familiar melodies from that time frame. We’ll have a CD playing as you come through the door to put you In The Mood - yet another song title from that period. Tinker will be sharing lots of little known anecdotes about performing with Vaughan Monroe at exotic places like The Strand Theatre and the Commodore Hotel. Her group was also featured in a movie entitled, “Carnegie Hall.” Tinker’s eyes are naturally twinkly, but when she begins to talk about the costumes and the excitement of those performances, they REALLY sparkle. She has promised to bring some scrapbooks so you can also see pictures from that period. Some of you will remember that Tinker and Donna Fuhlman performed for the Veterans’ Dinner a couple of years ago. Just as the guests at that meal felt their toes tapping and enjoyed the resurfacing of old memories, we think you’ll feel the same way as you hear her speak and as you listen to a few selections from the Moonmaids’ CD. Tinker now continues to share her musical gifts as she sings with the choir each Sunday. Just recently she was invited to go to New York to relate some of the things that happened to the Moonmaids with another vested interest group. Since Tinker has such a busy schedule and is in such high demand, we’re feeling fortunate to be able to book her for this ‘gig.’ Cost of tickets? One smile per attendee…. more are welcome if you have a few extras. Don’t forget to wear a touch o’green. See you there! 5

Gather At The Table Jesus enjoyed a good meal! There are at least six references in Scripture to Jesus feeding and eating with others. “So Jesus told the crowd to sit down on the ground. After giving thanks, He took the seven bread loaves, broke them into pieces, and gave them to His disciples so they could hand them out to the crowd. They also had a few fish. He pronounced a blessing over the fish and told His disciples to hand them out as well. The crowd ate its fill.” Mark 8:6-10

the Master. Jesus then took the bread and gave it to them. He did the same with the fish. John 21:12-14 Jesus modeled fellowship and hospitality. He changed lives over simple meals.

What is it about a meal? A meal helps people let down their guard. We feel comfortable around a table and conversation flows. When we share a meal we also tend to share our hearts. We talk, we listen. We share laughter, encouragement, and we are drawn closer together. We are also drawn closer to our Father. Jesus Himself said “And when two or three of you are together because of Me, you can be sure that I’ll be there.” Matthew 18:20 It is a good thing when a church family eats together. Lives are shared, touched and souls are impacted eternally.

“He took the five loaves and two fish, lifted His face to heaven in prayer, blessed, broke, and gave the bread and fish to the disciples to hand out to the crowd. After the people had all eaten their fill, twelve baskets of leftovers were gathered up.” Luke 9:15-17

Please join us the first Monday of each month for a simple meal. A soup and bread dinner will be served from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Drop in as you are available. There is no cost.

Dinners will begin March 7th.

“Jesus was eating supper at Matthew’s house with His close followers...” Matthew 9:10

We hope you will join us to share life together and celebrate being part of the family of God!

When Jesus got to the tree, He looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, hurry down. Today is My day to be a guest in your home.” Luke 19:5

– Fellowship Ministry

“As they continued their travel, Jesus entered a village. A woman by the name of Martha welcomed Him and made Him feel quite at home.” Luke 10:38 During the meal, Jesus took and blessed the bread, broke it, and gave it to His disciples: “Take, eat. This is My body.” Taking the cup and thanking God, He gave it to them: “Drink this, all of you. This is My blood, God’s new covenant poured out for many people for the forgiveness of sins.” Matthew 26:26-29 Jesus said, “Breakfast is ready.” Not one of the disciples dared ask, “Who are you?” They knew it was

Financial Peace University Financial Peace University Class was a big success in our church, and now Gracia de Cristo is sharing the FPU program en español, Sundays in the Ward Chapel. “God changed our lives from the very beginning of this class, and we want to help others to experience the same.” said Samuel Cardenas and his wife Dulce who now are leading the Spanish Version. Financial Peace and ESL are programs offered in our church to the Hispanic Community. Call Alex Rule for more information on those programs, 248-7940.

“Women of Prayer” is a group from Gracia de Cristo that gets together every Thursday night from 6-7 to pray for our church and families. They are taking their roll very seriously, and the group continues to grow. Aurora shared: “We feel that our prayers get stronger when we pray with other women as a team and we’re confident that God will be answering in His time.” Please join us and experience the power of God through prayer. Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Winter Shelter

UPDATE Thank You... I would like to publicly thank all of the people who have so graciously given of their time and generosity to support the cold weather shelter that feeds 5-10 homeless men every night here at Grace of Christ. I’ve heard almost every volunteer share about the blessings they have received by being a blessing to others. I’d like to specifically thank Ericka Clark who fields many of the calls from our volunteers and keeps our schedule for both our meal providers and our nightly hosts. We could not do what we are doing without her help.

Help Needed... We have about 4 more weeks of providing food, friendship and sharing our faith with the men who come to us every night. We still need more volunteers if you feel the Lord calling you to come serve. Ericka tells me we have lots of open dates for both meal providers and hosts. Please prayerfully consider if God is leading you into a night or two of service in support of this ministry. The most exciting part of my involvement has been getting to know these men. They all have stories and by listening to them and getting to know their names we’ve been able to have a very rewarding relationship with them. It’s been very cool to see a handful of these guys get housing, restore relationships with family and in some cases give back to the shelter program they came from. Please consider giving Ericka a call and get your name on the schedule.

In His loving name, – Steve Hildebrand 12

American Red Cross Blood Drive We have been blessed with the opportunity of hosting American Red Cross blood drives at Grace of Christ for over four years. Each time we prepare for a drive, I am amazed at the generosity of others – volunteers willing to bring freshly baked cookies for the canteen, volunteers to check-in donors the day of the event, and the donors! Our donors are the best (and you know who you are!) They sign up each time, come with a smile and leave knowing their contribution will save lives. What a gift! The last couple of years we have brought back the famous cheese and onion sandwiches to the canteen. Guess what? They will be available on March 14, too! This is most likely our last blood drive as ours are too small for the ARC crew. So I want to take the opportunity to thank everyone for helping, for donating, and for caring. It’s been an honor hosting these drives. I’ve enjoyed getting to know you all a bit better.

– Ericka Clark Let’s make this a memorable day – please go online to sign up, or call Ericka in the church office to make an appointment: 248-7940. Give blood and save a life! Monday, March 14 from 10 am - 2 pm in the Garden Room. http://www.redcrossblood.org.

Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church

Service Ministry Team

Service in Action God calls us to serve His people, and the clothing exchange is one way to help those in need. It is also an excellent opportunity to pray for one another. For many years, our church has been hosting a bi-annual clothing exchange led by the Service Ministry Team (SMT) and Gracia de Cristo. If we really want to serve Jesus, we must do it by serving others in our community. The Clothing Exchange allows for individuals and families in need to come through our church’s doors and receive free clothing, shoes, and other miscellaneous items donated by the generous people of our valley. While knowing that it is important for you to serve God, serving our brothers and sisters is important, too. Remember, God made you to love and to serve Him and not for self-centeredness. If you don’t have a servant’s heart, you will think that your service is for personal gain. God tests our hearts by asking us to serve in ways we cannot understand. If you see someone in need, God expects you to help His people and not to ignore those using excuses such as “I don’t have the time, I don’t have the money, I don’t have the resources.” God wants for you to show that person love, mercy, and respect. If you do not have the resources, you could pray for them. Prayer is the unlimited resource that never runs out. Jesus reminds us in His word, that in order to become great we must serve others.

wants to be great must “ Whoever become a servant. ”

– Mark 10:43 (MSG)

Our church continues to support missions and ministries locally and around the world through our Service Ministry Team. Some include: Project Mercy in Africa, Cambodia Orphanage in Asia, Living waters for the World, Love INC., Madison house, Ministry of Restoration, and others. On behalf of the SMT, we would like to extend our gratitude for your support to our church and our Missions. May the Love, Mercy, and the Grace of Christ always be present in your life.
