Have you ever wondered if there is more to life? Have you ever thought you were destined for something greater? Have you ever believed you were put here on earth for a higher purpose? Paul’s letter to the Ephesians offers a way for the church, the body of Christ, to embrace life in the way God intended. The means through which we do this is by trusting in the blessings and power given to us in Christ by the Holy Spirit: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 1:3).

Dear Church Family This month, I’d like to share with you an excerpt from Eugene Peterson’s book Practice
Resurrection: A Conversation On Growing Up in Christ. This book is serving as a tremendous resource for me in our present sermon series on Ephesians. “The Brambles of Individualism Paul must sense that it is going to be difficult to move from what our parents and teachers and friends tell us about the world and ourselves to what God reveals, and so he takes his time with us. He doesn’t just jump into it. Before taking up “church,” this climax topic that comprehends everything that has gone on before, Paul clears the way by helping us through some rough terrain. What he does is guide us through the thorn brambles of individualism. Individualism is the growth-stunting, maturityinhibiting habit of understanding growth as an isolated self-project. Individualism is self-ism with a swagger. The individualist is the person who is convinced that he or she can serve God without dealing with God. This is the person who is sure that he or she can love neighbors without knowing their names. This is the person who assumes that ‘getting ahead’ involves
4
leaving other people behind. This is the person who, having gained competence in knowing God or people or world, uses that knowledge to take charge of God or people or world. We, of course are inherently individuals responsible for our intentions and the use of our free will. God does not eviscerate us of individuality when we enter church. Church, rather, is where we cultivate a submission to the authority and care of God” (p.112). We live in a fiercely independent society. The truth is we struggle in submitting our lives to God. When we do submit to Him, however, we find that we begin to submit to one another. Pretty soon the “what’s good for me” becomes second to the “what’s good for we.” My hope and prayer, as we move through our present series, is that you might discover that you are a part of a greater plan and purpose for this world that goes far beyond yourself as an individual. Paul identifies this as one of the markers of Christian maturity. I leave you this month with a challenge, which may seem vaguely familiar: Ask not what your church can do for you. Ask what you can do for God through your involvement and participation in God’s Church! Living and loving for Him, Pastor Jack Peebles

Marriage Class
Saturday, October 29 Rhonda Taylor’s Home 9:30a - 3p Last March we just scratched the surface of what it means to have a powerful marriage based on Biblical principles. We talked about listening, and we listened on how to talk, we discussed how to raise the morale of our husbands, and looked at Esther who single-handedly raised the morale of the king, the kingdom, and a nation. On October 29 we meet again: this marriage journey, with God, is not for the feeble or the impatient, it is for women who set an aim and never give up until God is exalted in their marriages. This time we will push the walls further: we will look at “better communication skills”,” stopping the erosion of men’s masculinity” and “the art of waiting on God”. Welcome to the Women of Wonder Team! The Women’s Ministry of First Presbyterian Church is led by a group of women committed to “growing women up to be intentional about their faith.” Recently three women joined the WOW team. We’d like to welcome Laura Harper, Amae Merrill and Jessica Cavanaugh. It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. For those that open themselves to pursue Him, the Holy Spirit teaches how to stand in authority and power in the midst of all circumstances, to accomplish what needs to be done to advance the Kingdom. I pray also Janet Krieger that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and His nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare incomparably great power for us who believe. Ephesians 1: 18-23. sang out “Princess welcome to your castle!” What a beautiful illustration and reminder we are part of the royal family of the Kingdom of Heaven; princesses It is time for us to begin to speak, act and behave with and princes, daughters and sons of our King. We are the the dignity, confidence, authority and power of royalty. It is time for us to acknowledge the destiny we have in most precious and valuable creation in the eyes of our our King, to be filled to overflowing with the Holy Spirit Creator, God, and He welcomes us into His Kingdom. and to live moment by moment with the unlimited As believers we cannot assume our position of royalty possibility of Kingdom living. When we accept Jesus into our lives, the Holy Spirit begins to teach us the truth about our true identity and the rights and privileges we have because of being a son or daughter of God. The Spirit teaches us to act like royalty, walking in dignity and confidence, knowing that we are representing the Kingdom of Heaven. As we bow before our Lord, He raises us up to stand for Him . . . we can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord. And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like Him and reflect His glory even more. 2 Corinthians 3:18 The Spirit delegates authority from God to His believers. Each month each of our staff will sha
re a little bit about themselves by answeri ng some questions so you have a chance to get to know them a little better! you go to school? What was your This month’s question is: “Where did r best memory of school? Did you get favorite grade in school? What is you to ride a school bus or did you walk?”
Melissa Gray - Pre-Kindergarten Lead Teacher “I grew up in the Cowiche/Tieton area and attended Marcus Whitman Elementary, Tieton Middle School and Highland High School. After high school I attended YVCC for two years and then transferred to Seattle Pacific University. My favorite grade in school was 1st grade because I loved my teacher and loved learning and that’s where my best memory of school is. My little brother was born and I got to leave school early to meet him and then my teacher let me share pictures and stores about being a big sister when I went back to school. I rode the bus except when I missed it and my dad would drive me. I was the first to be picked up at 7:30 and the last to be dropped off at 4:00. I didn’t like it. The bus was close to our house so in the winter time the bus would still have ice on the windows and was freezing cold in the morning. I was very happy to turn 16 and be able to drive myself to school!”
Jennifer Eells - Upstairs 3’s/4’s Lead Teacher “I went to West Side/Riverside Christian K-12, and WSU after that. With so many wonderful years, it’s too hard to pick a favorite grade, but my best memories include music and drama classes and working on projects or homework with my friends! At Riverside Christian my mom always drove us, since she worked there; but when I had late drama practices, I got to drive myself!”
Barb Toweill - Upstairs 3’s Assistant Teacher “I went to a one room school in Nebraska until the 6th grade. There were about 20 students in this K-8 school. My family then moved to Oregon where I attended a school with a whole room for each grade. There, I began riding a bus to school (in Nebraska I walked 1 1/2 miles to school). One of my best memories is that my mom always made me and my siblings a new outfit to wear to school. It was so special because we didn’t get many new clothes.”
8
Channa Case - Pre-Kindergarten Assistant Teacher “I graduated from West Valley and then went to Seattle to SST Travel school to learn how to be a travel agent. I also attended YVCC. Graduating was my best memory of school. I rode the bus and walked during my school years.”
?
Margo Rogers - Upstairs 4’s Assistant Teacher “I started school at John Campbell Elementary in Selah, then we moved to Missouri where I attended 2nd grade at Neosho Elementary. One year later we were back in Selah and at John Campbell for 3rd and half of 4th grade. Then on to Bremerton and Manette Elementary for the other half of 4th and half of 5th. Then we moved back to Yakima where I attended Nob Hill, Wilson, Ike, and graduated from Westside Christian School. I really loved 7th grade because I had friends from 6th that went on to middle school with me. My favorite memory is having Biology at Ike and touching all those dead things! I walked to school everywhere except in Missouri where I got to ride a bus.”
Jessica Van Horn - Music, P.E. & Kid’s Club Lead Teacher “I went to Mt. View Elementary and Westside/Riverside Christian for Jr. High and High School. I loved 5th grade and my teacher Mr. Hanson. He is my all-time favorite teacher. All through school I was a social butterfly believe it or not. I loved being with my friends. What school work?! PE was my favorite subject because I love to play all sports and I’m very competitive. At Mt. View I rode the bus . . . Last one picked up, first one dropped off! (Aren’t you jealous Melissa?) At WCS/RCS I carpooled with neighbors and my mom also drove me in junior high. Then once I was in high school I drove myself in my 1992 red Jeep Cherokee.”
Ryan Clinkenbeard - P.E. Lead Teacher, Assistant Teacher “I went to Discovery Lab School where my favorite grade was 5th grade. My best memory of school was playing Cinderella in the school play during my 5th grade year! (Can you see why that was my favorite year?) I graduated from Titusville High School in Florida. I rode the bus to school!
I w my Teacher! Becky Gruenberg - “Higher Grounds” Barista, Snack, Director Assistant “North Dakota was my home for school years - first I went to Washburn Elementary, Sunset Middle School in Fargo, and then on to Washburn High School. Junior and senior high years were the best years of my life. I was the Cardinal bird mascot and I loved playing basketball. I lived a mile and half from school and we had to walk to school and home until winter, then we rode the bus. North Dakota winters are really, really cold and we could have frozen to death! I loved school!”
?
Jenifer Knight - Downstairs 3’s/4’s Assistant Teacher “I began my school years (Preschool through 5th grade) at McKenzie River Elementary in Oregon. (I loved McKenzie Bridge!) I then went to school in Naches, graduating from Naches High School. I did take an Early Childhood Education (ECE) class at Selah High School in 12th grade and then attended YVCC, taking more ECE classes. My favorite years were my freshman and senior school years. My best memory of school is when our basketball team went to state. I did have a LONG bus ride and a LONG drive way!” Rhonda Cardona - Preschool Director “Just like Melissa, I, too, attended Marcus Whitman, Tieton Elementary/Jr. High, and graduated from Highland High School. Taking the bus was not my favorite thing to do - I hated waiting for the bus even though it was a short ride. I was so glad when I finally started High School and rode with my older brother to school (I don’t think he enjoyed it though!) I graduated from Heald College in San Jose, California, majoring in accounting. Later in life, I went back to school and graduated from YVCC and CWU. I loved my senior year in high school - lots of fun times and memories made!

Dear Families, About a year ago, I learned personally that kids don't come with an instruction manual.
Pastor Mark Tumney Pastor of Family Life and Missions mark.tumney@fpcyakima.com
One of the huge advantages of being a part of a church is the ability to glean from the wisdom of others. This fall we are privileged to learn from Laurie Kanyer who is a Certified Family Life Educator--which is a fancy way of saying that she really knows how to help others to be good parents. Laurie will present some very practical, biblically based techniques to support cooperation and peace in the family. You'll also gain skills to encourage positive behavior and reduce stress in the family. After this class you'll not only understand your child better--you'll understand yourself better. Childcare and concurrent programs are available for children and students. Hope to see you then! Pastor Mark

Trunk or Treat This Halloween FPC will be hosting a Trunk or Treat outreach event on October 31st in our parking lot—not only for our kids, but particularly for kids in our local neighborhood. What’s “Trunk or Treat” you ask ? Trunk or Treat is a safe outreach event where people like you and me gather in the church, circle up our cars in parking lot, and hand out candy from the trunks of our cars. Hosts are encouraged to wear costumes (no scary or demonic stuff please), and even to decorate the trunks of their cars. Please consider serving local families by driving down and handing out candy here at FPC. More details to come! In the meantime, please contact Shan Trick with any questions: shan.trick@fpcyakima.com.
