Over the course of this series, we will explore the supernatural power given to us by God who invites us to receive His blessings and live the life He wants us to truly live! Ephesians offers great insights into 1) the blessings from God 2) the call to maintain the unity in practice which Christ has brought about through His resurrection and 3) practical instruction on how to live a holy, pure, and Christ inspired life. Join us Sundays this fall as we discover what it means to be ALIVE as never before! Have you ever wondered if there is more to life? Have you ever thought you were destined for something greater? Have you ever believed you were put here on earth for a higher purpose? Paul’s letter to the Ephesians offers a way for the church, the body of Christ, to embrace life in the way God intended. The means through which we do this is by trusting in the blessings and power given to us in Christ by the Holy Spirit: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 1:3).

POW!
Dear Church Family, I love the fall. Cooler weather (or at least the hope of it!) and the changing leaves mark the new season. Kids are back in class and the beginning of the academic year affects us all whether we are in school or not. The summer was filled with vacations and travel. Most of that comes to an end as we settle into our routines. The ministries of the church typically pick up in the fall and this year is no exception. Our Ministry Teams have been working hard over the spring and summer to plan for the fall. There are opportunities for worship, fellowship, discipleship, and service described in this issue of Here@First and on our website. On kick-off Sunday September 11th, we hit the ground running with our adult, youth, and children Sunday school opportunities. September 11th is also a day of service as we encourage you to bring some grubbies to church so you and your family can go and serve at the Madison House immediately after worship. There is a special worship service that evening at 6:00 as we observe the tenth anniversary of September 11. Wednesdays@First begins on September 14th with a variety of offerings which are listed in this issue. On September 18th, we invite you to take part in the All –Church Ghormley Round Up. These opportunities and the ones to follow later in the fall have been created for the purpose of not simply allowing people to “get what they need”, but more for equipping people so they can connect with one another and go out and live for Christ in the world! You were put here for His purpose. WE were put here for His purpose! My sincere hope is that the opportunities for worship, fellowship, discipleship, and service will help you discover the purpose and plan God has for you.

In fact, our fall sermon series “ALIVE in the Spirit!” has this goal at its heart. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians offers a way for the church, the body of Christ, to embrace life in the way God intended. The means through which we do this and carry forth His Witness is by tapping into the blessings and power given to us in Christ by the Holy Spirit: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 1:3). In addition to the various opportunities to be equipped through the ministries listed in this issue and on the website, the leadership of the church will continue in our consultation with TAG. A staff retreat facilitated by TAG will occur this month on September 20-21. Please keep us in your prayers. TAG will then lead the Session and program staff through two planning retreats in October and November. We will spend the October retreat processing the results of the Transforming Church Index Survey and the conversations with Focus Groups which took place on August 20-21. When we’ve had a chance to do this, we will share the final report summary with the larger congregation. This will then lead to the November retreat in which we will develop a long-range vision and plan for the church. Essentially, we will be spending the next months learning more about who we are as a body of believers and who God is calling us to be in this community. Once again, we covet your prayers in this season of discernment. I invite you to take some time and thumb through the pages of this issue. Life can be so busy, especially with the onset of fall. As you are settling into your routine this September, please make growing in and serving Christ a priority. How will you love God and your neighbors this fall? Living and loving for Him,

WHAM! Back to school.
Even though it’s been many years since most of us reading this have returned to a classroom, those words evoke thoughts and feelings when we hear them. For some they indicate tighter schedules and more structured days. For others, they might hold promise of new friends and new experiences. And for many… an enormous sense of relief (particularly at this point in life) at not having to face endless amounts of homework and omnipresent due- dates for extensive projects. Whatever your school experiences were, they influenced your thinking and who you have become today. As summer draws to a close and public school begins, new opportunities also open for us at First Pres. The break has afforded our church leaders time for reflection and they’re returning with fresh ideas. While the Presbyterian Church as a whole is facing significant changes, many of our own activities will continue. To name only a few… The Wednesday evening classes will begin again. The Sunday school offerings will kick off with a rousing start. The Youth groups will continue. The choir will return. Small groups will re-focus. Men’s Studies, and The Women’s group and the Circles will again go into motion. Those of us who have been here for awhile enjoy reconnecting and getting back into the swing of things. Now is the time to start looking around for unchurched friends and to invite them to join us. We’re greatly out-numbered. Truth told, we’re surrounded
6
by them. They’re the people we see every day when we go for a walk. They’re the folks at the shops we frequent. They’re the ones who provide services for us. We already know that their lives could be so much better if they were introduced to the Lord. Let’s keep our eyes open and extend a welcome to them now, so they can make early connections. We all know it’s more rewarding to join something at the beginning rather than walk into it once it’s already established. That can feel like arriving after the movie has started. So, look around. Who do you see that needs His word? Think of ways that you can make them feel welcome. Here is a suggestion. As summer draws to a close, you may find a forgotten zucchini that has grown to a size where it needs its own street address. Do not leave it on your neighbor’s step with a ‘free to a good home’ note on it. Instead, help it ‘morph’ into spaghetti sauce, soup, salad, bread, cookies, cake, brownies, jam, relish, and a casserole. (You’ll still have some left over. Some of them become the size of blimps.) Give it away lovingly with a bow on top as well as an invitation to join us at First Pres on Sundays… or for any of the other wonderful opportunities that lie ahead with our church as ‘back to school’ launches us towards autumn.

Philippians 4:19 “And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.”
Ladies, are you encouraged or discouraged by this Bible verse from Philippians? Do you sigh, and say to yourself, “If only that truth applied to me?” I’ll be honest, I have felt discouraged in the past, feeling that God’s words did not apply to me and my needs. I struggled with feelings of loneliness and I thought human relationships would fill those voids. However, it wasn’t until I actively sought an intimate relationship with my Creator that I began to believe the truths He gives us in the Bible. He does take care of all my needs. There are times I don’t get answers as quickly as I would like, but the Lord never fails to answer my call. I find ways to praise Him daily and daily He meets me, wherever I am, to fill me with His promises and truths. I pray you are encouraged by His words today. Take a moment and be still. Know that He is. Share your heart with Him and I promise you, Sister, He will respond. Be still, listen and be encouraged.

God is always speaking to us. Do you hear Him? Do you know the difference between His voice, the enemy’s voice, and your self talk? On earth, we probably won’t figure it out 100% of the time, but if you long for more intimacy with the Lord and would like to learn to recognize His voice, join us on Wednesday nights. We’ll encourage one another as we learn about and practice listening to God in prayer.

Welcome to KidZone 2011-12!
BLAP!
Sonbeams and Cubbies This fall in the 2 ½ - 5 year old KidZone classes, children will learn to recognize that the Bible is God’s Word and that God loves and cares for us. Each lesson will actively engage every child in the Bible story, and lead them to experience God’s love and know Jesus. We teach the Bible in easy, relevant and creative ways that engage the imagination of children, transform lives, and lead children to Jesus. Our Sonbeams and Cubbies classes will see that they can learn about God’s love, know God loves them, and that they can show God’s love to everyone! Kindergarten – 3rd Grade Have you ever wondered what success looks like in the lives of children as we build prevailing children’s ministries? How do we know that our Bible teaching is effectively transforming kids from the inside out? What should we be working toward as children grow up spiritually in our ministry? It only makes sense to measure our children’s ministry on a level appropriate for kids by developing kids that are transformed by Grace, Growth, Group, Gifts, and Good Stewardship…also known as the 5-G’s. This fall as we kick off a new year of KidZone with our 5-G curriculum, we are asking Small Group Leaders to affirm and encourage children in their groups as they make progress in living out these 5-G’s. We dream of the day when each child will accept God’s gift of grace and it is just “normal” for every child to extend grace—to grow up with a passion for lost people and the knowledge that each one matters to God. We long for the day when children will grow their roots down deep in their spiritual journey being both hearers and doers of God’s Word. We eagerly wait for the day when children will be using their spiritual gifts to serve their churches, and where children will practice good stewardship – wanting to give sacrificially of their time and resources to help others. Our vision is to grow 5-G kids and then release them into their schools, families, and neighborhoods to impact their world with the power of Jesus Christ. 4th & 5th Grade KidZone This year the older Kids are getting to know God, and who God is through Hands On Bible Max curriculum. This is where kids get into the Bible and the Bible gets into the kids! Every week we will explore God’s Word in large groups and small groups called Bible Crews. Worship and prayer will be responses to what we’ve learned. This curriculum is intended to help kids build a deep and lasting friendship with God through the Bible. Kids will grow in amazing ways as they dig into the Bible, experience its truths, and apply those truths to their lives. How can you help? The answer is simple…through prayer and the gift of your time and talents, you can help us accomplish this God given vision. Leaders of all ages are needed for Sunday mornings @ 9:30 in all KidZone classes. The commitment level is flexible…your involvement can fit around your schedule. Don’t let the opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life pass you by! Please call Susie Woodin @ 248-7940 for more information on how you can become involved in KidZone. 8

Ghormley Christmas Trees Sale
Few sensory experiences evoke as many memories as the smells of Christmas. None are as powerful as the smell of a freshly cut evergreen tree filling your home with the fragrance of mountain freshness. This Christmas, why not bring the aroma of the Holiday season right into your living room, as well as support our camp ministry? Buy a beautifully groomed Ghormley Christmas tree and start your holiday season off right. All trees will be presold and are guaranteed to be freshly cut within days of delivery. You can choose to pick them up at the church on two separate dates, Thanksgiving weekend Sunday, November 27 or Sunday, December 11. For an extra fee we can even deliver personally to your door. What’s better than that? Last year we sold all of our trees and many people said they were the most beautiful trees they ever purchased. If you usually buy a live tree for Christmas, please consider ordering from us this year, our prices are very competitive with other local tree sales. If your artificial tree is looking rather dingy and dusty from years of use and storage, why not step up to a timeless tradition and fill your home with the aroma and beauty of a fresh cut tree. Five varieties are available in various sizes, just to meet your particular needs.

SUMMER Overall, camp was a great success this year. The speakers every week were great and did a wonderful job of teaching us from the book of Daniel about what it means to live a life that is different from the rest of the world. We started doing parent responses this year and the overwhelming majority of them were VERY positive regarding their child's experience at camp! Many families indicated this was their best camp experience they have ever had at Ghormley. We had a great group of staff who worked with the kids and made it a summer that will not be soon forgotten! made a first time 119 campers indicated they 300+ campers ist. “The issue
of homosexual ordination has been the flashpoint of controversy for the last 35 years. Yet, that issue – with its contentious “yes” and “no” votes - masks the more important issues that the PCUSA faces. Those larger, more nuanced issues revolve around differing understanding of scripture, authority, Christology (both the person and the work of Christ), the extent of salvation (creeping universalism), and a broader set of moral issues around which fracture lines appear. There are deep divisions within the PCUSA; opposing sides read different books and journals, attend different conferences, and support different causes. There is no longer a common understanding of what is meant by being “Reformed.” —Excerpt from The White Paper 1/7/11 (to read the whole Paper click the link on the church website at www. FPCyakima.com) It is perhaps clarifying to view the crisis the Presbyterian Church is facing as one in which there has been a blurring of social mores, social justice and the Law of the LORD. Social Mores: Acquired customs and manners. The accepted customs and conventions embodying the fundamental values of a group or society. Mores are acquired and the definition of acquire is to obtain by one’s own efforts. What has been acquired then becomes accepted, or approved, and determined satisfactory. Once accepted by a group the mores will be acted upon and become the fundamental and defining marker of that group. Social Justice:
The fair and proper administration of laws conforming to the natural law that all persons, irrespective of ethnic origin, gender, possessions, race, religion, etc., are to be treated equally and without prejudice. The principles of equality and solidarity, that understands and values human rights, and that recognizes the dignity of every human being.
Justice is acting in a fair and upright manner to value another, to recognize their dignity as a creation of our God regardless of the circumstances of this life. Justice is not agreeing with sin but rather having compassion and respect for every human. The Law of the LORD: The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8 The commandments of the LORD are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are clear, giving insight to life. 9 Reverence for the LORD is pure, lasting forever. The laws of the LORD are true; each one is fair. 10 Than honey, even honey dripping from the comb. 11 They are a warning. They
are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter to those who hear them; there is great reward for those who obey them. 12 How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults. 13 Keep me from deliberate sins! Don't let them control me. Then I will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin. 14 May the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart be pleasing to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer. Psalm 19: 7-14
God's Word is perfect as the psalmist stated in verse 1. "The law of the LORD," is a Hebrew term that is used to define Scripture. It speaks of all of God's Word . . . the Word of God, or the Bible, is perfect. This is in contrast to the flawed, imperfect reasoning of humanity. As societal mores change, we are not to be blown about by the winds of those changes. We are to stand on the perfect foundation of God's Word. The Word of God is trustworthy and will transform us. His Word gives us wisdom. The Hebrew word used in verse 7 for simple is pethiy and comes from a root word that speaks of an open door. It is the idea of a person whose mind is like an open door. He or she has no control over what comes in or what goes out. In contrast if we are in pursuit of acquiring the Word through the regular discipline of Scripture reading and application, God's Word will transform us from a simple person to one that is wise. The Word of God is right we are told in verse 8. In Hebrew, this means that the Bible has given us the straightforward, correct path to follow. We don't have to lose our way in the storm of human opinion. The Word of God is true and fair. Verse 9 proclaims truth and fairness in the Law of the Lord. The Hebrew word for truth embodies divine instruction and sureness. Righteous is the Hebrew word for fair and is defined as doing or bringing justice in the conduct and character of God. Scripture divinely instructs us to be righteous and fair. And, in doing so our social more, as the Church, is to acquire and live out the character of God in a manner that brings social justice to the world. This was the example of Jesus as He healed the man with leprosy in Matthew 8: 1-3, taught on the judgment day in Matthew 25: 31-46 and shared the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10: 27-37. We accomplish this when we stand firmly upon the Law of the LORD. This is what will be accepted, approved and determined satisfactory by our God. The Law of the LORD is what will be our fundamental and defining marker. The Law of the LORD recognizes the dignity of every human being and calls us to a missional response to the needs in our community and world. This is the call of the Church.

Cristo Vive Restoration Ministry
…Just blessing & loving our Community one family at a time. This summer Cristo Vive went out into our community and helped two families fix up their homes. Sometimes we share the Gospel over a meal...sometimes we can share it over a can of paint. John & Kathy needed a complete repainting of their home, and some roof sealant. Janice had a home that was a cacophony of mismatched colors. When the final touches are done we will celebrate the project’s completion and God’s providence with a potluck. Helping to spruce up someone’s home is just one way we can share the love of Christ. Would you like to join us on future projects? Call Gustavo x133 or on his cell: 388-5752.

Library Have you ever wondered, " What is the most effective way of telling people about Jesus?" Ever taken classes in how to share the gospel? I have. Yet, my three most memorable experiences with evangelism occurred : 1. Outside a church building or church sponsored event. 2. With people I knew and had close relationships with. 3. Were not initiated by me, but by the other person's questions. Randy Newman, who has worked over 20 years with Campus Crusade for Christ, says, "Ask a question." Studying the Bible shows this was often Jesus' way of revealing the Truth, Himself, to others. My favorite example of this was His interaction with the Samaritan woman at the well.
