During June, we will begin a new sermon series looking at various spiritual disciplines. We are calling the series “Mining the Riches of God: 7 Practical Steps for Everyday People.” The idea is to share practices in which you can deepen your relationship with God. A good relationship with God doesn’t happen overnight. Like anything else in life, we must work at it. John Ortberg, in his book The Life You’ve Always Wanted, makes the distinction between training vs. trying. “There is an immense difference between training to do something and trying to do something…Spiritual transformation is not a matter of trying harder, but training wisely” (Ortberg, p. 43) Ortberg is right! When I was younger, I was very active in sports. Whether it was baseball, football, or basketball, if I wanted to be better, I had to practice. You cannot just pick up a bat and expect to hit a 95 mile per hour fastball. The best athletes in the world become the best because they devoted many hours honing their skills. Last year, I was part of a group from church that climbed Mount Adams. To be honest, I really did little to prepare for the climb. I made it to the top but this Texas boy paid for his lack of training, I physically paid! We also prepare ourselves for our careers in life. This can be done through education, experience or on the job training. Why should our spiritual lives be any different? Over the first half of the summer, we are going to be talking about these 7 practices: Studying Scripture, Worshiping God, Engaging in Service, Simplifying Our Lives, Enduring through Suffering, Fasting, and Being Alone with God. I hope this will serve to enhance the spiritual disciplines in which you are already engaged. It is not intended to overwhelm you with one more thing to add to your already crowded plate. Many people feel burdened when the church talks about spiritual disciplines because they believe that God judges their spiritual life based on the number of times they are engaged in that discipline. For example, if you pray four times on Monday and seven times on Tuesday, perhaps you think you were more spiritual on Tuesday and God liked you better on that day. The problem with this way of thinking is that we succumb to a works-righteousness approach to living out our faith. In other words, God’s love is disseminated based on our actions. There is little or no room for grace with this approach. Ortberg says that the “true indicator of spiritual well-being is growth in the ability to love God and people” (p. 45). Once again, Ortberg is right! Jesus lifts up to us the greatest commandments in Matthew 22: “’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets” (22: 34-40, NRSV). By emphasizing these two (which many say is a summation of the Ten Commandments), Jesus says that our faith must be ingrained, not only in our minds, but more importantly in our hearts. I invite you to join us over the next two months as we open our hearts and grow together in our love of God and one another! In the grip of grace,

Summer Calendar is Coming Your Way! The FPC Students Summer 2009 Calendar has been mailed out. If you wish to receive a copy of this calendar, drop by the Connection Center or the PowerHouse to pick one up. This calendar covers June, July and August so be sure to check it out if you want to know what Students are up to this summer.
FPC Students @ Ghormley High School Camp is June 27 to July 3 and the Mid High Camp we are going to is July 19 to July 25. Those two weeks we will provide counselors from our Student Department here at FPC and transportation to and from camp will be available. The theme this summer is “Superhero” and you can register online at www.ghormleymeadow.org.
Mid High Pool Parties The Hein’s have volunteered their pool once again for our middle school pool parties. The dates are June 14, July 12, and August 9. These parties will start right after Sunday school so be sure to bring your swimsuit and towel to church. We will provide students with rides to the Hein’s right from church, and parents can come pick them up by 1:30p. We will have chips, cookies, hot dogs, and games, so come ready to party!

Our High school parties are once again going to be at the Gustafson’s pool. These will be on Wednesday nights from 6p to 9p on June 17 and 24, July 22 and 29, and August 12. We will have dinner, time to hang out, and a casual time of worship. Bring $2 for food and don’t forget your towel!
Discipleship Groups Our D-Groups are not going to start until after the Cambodia trip. Once again our groups will be meeting on Tuesdays from 10a to 3p for study, fellowship, and time to enjoy the summer weather together. We will meet 5 Tuesdays in a row from July 21 to August 18. Talk to Tyler or Karin if you want to get plugged into a group.

Thank you for your prayer support and for helping us get ready for our new year at First Presbyterian Christian Preschool.
School is out for the summer! But this doesn’t
mean we are idle with nothing to do! We are already charging up and getting in gear for the school year to begin in September. And we need your help! You can help most by keeping this program in your prayers. We have spaces for 90 children here and a chance to impact their families, their friends and neighbors, and extended families. Within these 90 families, there are several who would otherwise not be able to attend if it were not for the generosity of our church family. We have a scholarship program which provides assistance in the monthly tuition and now, probably more than ever, we need your support. We also provide each child with a Preschooler’s Bible at the beginning of each school year. We use this Bible in our weekly chapel times together. A letter is sent home each week to the parents sharing with them what was read and encouraging them to read this again together from their own Preschooler’s Bible. Each of these Bibles cost $10. So to help us be ready to go in September, here is your list! • Pray for each child who will be attending, including their families and friends. • Pray for the open spaces to be filled in the program. • Pray that we will have the funds available to help those who apply for scholarship assistance. • Pray that we will have the Bibles needed for the children. Pray for each of these Bibles to be a blessing to the children and families.

The 4th Tuesday of every month is Kaffee Klatsch.
(WOW) is the new name for Women’s Ministry at First Pres Church. The women of FPC have enjoyed being spiritually fed through many activities both on and off the church campus for some time. The spring retreat is the largest event of the year followed by Bible studies, Presbyterian Women’s Guild and Circles, Girls’ Night Out, and service projects throughout the year. This spring, a group of women prayed for a team to become established to meet on a regular basis and begin planning how to respond to God’s calling in the lives of women in our church and valley. A group of women met for the first time in April to begin what God has instructed them to do, “Grow women up to be intentional about their faith.” This fall will kick off new opportunities for women to meet one another and grow deeper with God through retreats, Bible studies, small groups and other events being planned. MOPS has just wrapped up our 11th year here at First Pres. It has been a great year thanks to the support of so many, especially the church and volunteers and of course the blessings God has continued to pour out to this ministry! We aren't finished yet though...We have Summer fun planned. Play dates at Franklin Park will be 6/19, 7/17, and 8/14 from 10:00-12:00. Bring a lunch or grab something at the soda fountain, it's a great time to get together for some "Mom" time while the kids are having fun! Also, Nancy Gustafson from First Pres is offering up her pool again this year for our MOPS group. This will be every Wednesday from 11:001:00 beginning June 10th through August 19th. our summer camp season. Outreach Camp happens June 12-14. Your generous Easter offering makes it possible for these approximately 100 at-risk 5th and 6th graders, from around the Yakima Valley, to have an incredible weekend of fun and introduction to faith. Staffed by church volunteers and Ghormley summer staff, these kids are inundated with the attention of their counselors and immersed in an atmosphere of love and acceptance. Please pray that these camper’s hearts will be receptive to the grace offered by our Lord.

Our first Junior Camp begins on June 15th and then the rest of the summer becomes a blur as one camp after another comes to our meadow. Our theme this year revolves around super heroes, so don’t be surprised if you see caped crusaders and muscle-bound masked men making appearances in and around Ghormley. We will be emphasizing the “supernatural gifts and abilities” God grants to all of his children to better serve their world. Be in prayer for campers, staff, our speakers, safety, and a spiritually impactful summer. Don’t forget to plan on coming up to camp on Saturday, July 4, for the camp’s 70th Anniversary Celebration and BBQ. We plan on having special guests from the camp’s past, special entertainment, and activities for the entire family. You will also get back home in time to watch the fireworks, so don’t let anything stop you from coming.

Serve and Love Yakima Day
On Saturday May 2 all of us were invited to take an hour or two and find a way to demonstrate love to the neighborhoods in which we live, or to the neighborhood around First Pres. Together with other churches in the city, we wanted to make a strong statement of our love for Jesus to those who live near us and near our churches. This year we expected to start small with the expectation that it would build over the next few years. The intention wasn’t to draw attention to ourselves, instead we wanted to draw attention to the love of God for each person in our community. On May 2 several from First Pres committed themselves to finding simple ways to express love and friendship to their neighbors. Right around the church, neighbors were visited, spring plants offered, copies of First News were handed out, windows were washed, smiles, kind words, and prayers were exchanged. One dear woman mentioned that it was her birthday and so a return trip that afternoon brought a birthday cake, good wishes and prayers. Another woman mentioned, in obvious brokenness, the need for prayer, which those there were privileged to offer for her and her family. These are just a few of the simple acts of love and service offered in the name and power of Jesus! First Pres is an active church with deep love for the Yakima community. Our reputation and witness for Jesus grows with each word of friendship, each prayer, each kindness, each act of service. We have been placed here by God … on this corner in this city for a reason. It’s exciting and humbling to watch God continue to work through the FPC family, along with those from many other churches in our city and valley, to rebuild relationships, restore lives and point people to Jesus!

Beginnings and Ends Dear O’hanna, I just love that term from the Hawaiian language - O’hanna. It means family, or deep meaningful relationships - and that’s how I feel about you. You, the family of First Presbyterian Church, are my O’hanna. I am stepping down as Director of Family Ministries. I’ve decided to follow in my wife’s footsteps and become a nurse. I’ve already begun classes to prepare me for this new direction in my life. This decision has come as a result of lots of prayer and discernment of where my God given gifts and talents are best used. My passion is to reach people that don’t know Jesus. I love to help people relate to Jesus and start a journey with Him. I can’t think of a better place to reach out to people and share about Jesus than a hospital. This is where I’m gifted, and where I am passionate. I have truly enjoyed being part of the First Pres Staff for the last four years. I have loved the relationships, the times of joy and the times of sorrow. I have learned a lot about friendship, about love, and most of all the value of a Godly community. I am not going anywhere. The Buckley’s will continue to worship here at First Pres. We love the relationships that God has blessed us with here. You have been the reason I have enjoyed my time here. It has been a joy, an honor, and a privilege to serve with you and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I love all of you and look forward to just hanging out with you in the future. Norm Buckley
