Dear Church Family, At the June 23rd Session meeting, the mission statement of First Presbyterian Church of Yakima was approved as the following: “Worshiping God together, Growing in Christ-like maturity, Reaching those unconnected to Jesus Christ, and Impacting our community and the world.” The only change was a reordering, placing “Worshiping” at the beginning. You might be wondering, “Why change what we have?” We believe everything we do in our lives flows from loving/worshiping God, acknowledging and praising Him for His sovereignty, grace, and love. Because He loves us and we love/worship God, we can love our neighbors. “We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus says the greatest commandments are to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Also, we love our neighbors as ourselves (Matt. 22:36-40, Mark 12:28-31, Luke 10:25-28). In Jesus’ teaching, loving God is first and then we demonstrate our love of Him through loving our neighbors. The other bit of news to share with you is that the Session approved the formation of an Ad Hoc Committee that will be working with the Session through the various ministry teams to develop and implement a Ministry Master Plan. We believe God has given us a vision to move toward and through the guidance of the Holy Spirit will discern what it means to worship, grow, reach, and impact here at FPC. The fruit of that discernment would be this three-five year “Master Plan” addressing our programs, staffing needs, and facilities. Over the next half of 2009, we will be setting goals and developing strategies for accomplishing those goals. My hope is to unveil our Ministry Master Plan at the annual meeting January 31, 2010. The power and presence of the Holy Spirit are evident! There is a sense of excitement and anticipation as we move toward the future and I look forward to sharing our plans as they unfold! In His grip,

Pastor Jack 1

Cambodia

We went to Cambodia wanting to see God at work in two different ways. We wanted to see His work in and among the people of Cambodia so that we might understand more fully what the Kingdom of Heaven looks like here on earth. Secondly, we wanted to see His work within our own hearts and minds so that we might be aware of where we need to repent from our ways and join His ways. We are happy to report that we saw God working in both of these ways. The ministry that we were able to be a part of in Cambodia was inspiring. We were given the opportunity to work side by side with Cambodian people who are giving their whole lives to serve in the name of Jesus. In spite of a corrupt government, crippling poverty, and a misplaced hope in Buddhism, our brothers and sisters in Christ are doing beautiful work to fight against injustice and care for those in need. This is God at work. In our own hearts we saw God teaching us that He is the Bread of Life. We prayed for God to heal our sick bodies and He answered. We prayed for God to give us good rest in the midst of intense heat and He answered. We prayed for God to give us love and patience for one another and He answered. And we prayed for God to give us open eyes to see how we might each use our gifts and talents in ministering to people and He answered. This is God at work. Our prayer now is that we remember what we experienced so that we might actually live in a way where we allow God to be our provider in all that we do. 5

CHILDREN’S MINISTRYnews Colby’s Room

My name is Melody Marshall and I have a passion for children with special needs and made a career as a special educator before retiring. My passion became personal when my grandson, Gerik , was diagnosed with autisim. God has taught me more than I could ever have envisioned.

Kathy Eaton

Director of Children’s Ministries 248-7940, ext. 114 kathy.eaton@fpcyakima.com

As you can imagine, my ears perked up at church when I heard someone talking about a “special needs” room at the church being introduced. My heart that resides with these unique and wonderful children pounded with excitement. An opportunity for me to continue my walk with Jesus while helping children was before me. What an opportunity for me and our church to embrace our children with special needs! A special classroom is such a wonderful idea because many times these children need a place to “regroup” and calm down in order to learn in the classroom and not be a distraction to others. This program allows a place for a child to rest and calm down before returning to class.

Susie Woodin

Assist. Dir. of Children’s Ministries 248-7940, ext. 110 susie.woodin@fpcyakima.com

Also, helping the children allows for familes to worship relieved from worry - and parents need “worry free time” as they participate in worship. I encourage adults and youth to volunteer and assist in the nurturing and teaching of our special children as they learn about our God’s enduring love. - Melody

Ghormley Meadow Christian Campnews What a great summer

it has been up here on the Meadow. Dozens of lives have been changed by the good news of the gospel and hundreds of “super heroes in training have been unleashed on an unsuspecting world. As campers have learned about their unique shape and how God has specially designed them for service, we pray their homes, churches, schools and neighborhoods will be positively impacted.

Our 70th birthday

celebration on the 4th of July was a great success. About 120 people joined us for a day of fun and remembrance. We also dedicated our memorial tree grove at the end of the day. If you would like to honor someone whose life was impacted by Ghormley, for a donation of $200 we will arrange for a native tree to be planted in their honor with a specially engraved stone with their name on it. Call the camp if you are interested. 8

MISSION news Living Waters for the World Update Thank you for your generosity to the people of Yotholin, Mexico! We are pleased to report that between First Presbyterian and Westminster, $16,000 was given towards the project that will provide clean water to these brothers and sisters. Currently, the church in Yotholin is facing some challenges in finishing the building that will house the water system. Funds that they had raised for the building have been used to help pay medical bills for a church member who was involved in a serious car accident. Our return installation trip can only be scheduled after the building is completed, so the elders at El Sinai church have requested we delay our return until December. Consequently, for now, we are waiting and praying for God’s good timing and provision. While we wait to move ahead on the Yotholin venture, we are also looking to the future, doing some research to see where our next project might be. Please continue to pray for the church in Yotholin, particularly for the young man who was injured, and the ongoing work to help complete the project. If you are interested in being a part of future projects, talk to Jim or Kathy Bricel (965 6042) about attending the Living Waters “Clean Water University” coming up in October in California. This is a training that would equip you for team leadership.

Sharing our stories... Shan Trick On June 28, with simple words printed on cardboard, God touched hearts throughout our congregation. This challenged me to write my story so that I could give an answer to everyone who asks the reason for the hope I have (1 Peter 3:15). Here is my faith story…

Since my relationship with Christ, I no longer worry or fear my future because I know He will take care of me. “Cast your cares on the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall” Psalm 55:22. I know what God’s will is for my life because His word tells me and I am comforted by His love for me. God provided me a wonderful husband who is my spiritual leader and challenges my walk with God daily. We are blessed with a daughter that I will enjoy spending my life encouraging and watching grow up. I know His plan for my life is to prosper and that brings me peace.

I grew up with a wonderful family who continue to be a big part of my life. Yet life before I knew Christ was not so wonderful. Many years I lived wondering what more does life have to offer, I felt stuck in a rut much of the time. I was fearful about my future, will I marry? What about kids? Will I make enough money to live my dream? I grew up attending Sunday school and church but was content to just know that God is available when I need Him. I found my identity and importance in life from my job.

1 Peter 3:15 “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” 11
