“Worshiping God together, Growing in Christ-like maturity, Reaching those unconnected to Jesus Christ and Impacting our community and the world.
September 2009 First Presbyterian Church
volume 6
Dearchurch family, Professor Lowell of Harvard University was speaking many years ago to a gathering on Columbus Day. He said that there were three profound things about Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America: First, when Columbus left Spain he didn’t know where he was going. Second, when he arrived in the New World he didn’t know where he was. Third, when he returned to Ferdinand in his court he didn’t know where he had been. Folks have added later, “and he did it all on borrowed money!” Do you get the sense that we go through life lost? I was reminded this week of Paul’s conversion story in Acts. Paul was like a bulldog in the way he went about persecuting Christians, dragging them from their beds and throwing them in jail. After they had fled Jerusalem, he gained permission to pursue them. There was anger and venom and he resented the followers of “the Way.” It wasn’t enough to get them to leave; he wanted them to pay! On that road to Damascus Paul has a blinding encounter with the Lord. In that moment, Paul realizes what many of us realize throughout the course of our lives: We are lost, wandering aimlessly. Yes, we may feel like we have a direction, purpose and passion, but perhaps these are not what God wants for us. Paul certainly found that out as God connected with him in a way that literally left him without the ability to see. In this experience, God called Paul to walk a new road and truly opened his eyes for the first time. Many people feel lost as they go about their week. The haze of busy schedules and conflicting values leave us in the dark. Let me invite you to join us on Wednesday nights this fall and let God “find you” during the week. We are calling our Wednesday night program “Re3.” The idea is that when you and your family join the larger church family, you will be Replenished, Recharged and Reconnected. Supper is going to be served at 5:30 in the gym, classes begin at 6:15 and more info can be found on pages 17 and 18 in this issue. We believe First Presbyterian Church is going to be the place to be on Wednesday nights! Not all of us have encounters as radical as Paul, but when God “finds” us and our life is illuminated in God’s unique way, it is no less significant. I believe God’s activity in our life doesn’t end there, but rather these encounters are confirmed for us over and over again as we journey on. How do you go about your everyday life? Do you go as if you are one of the lost or as one who has been found by the One who died for you? Unlike Columbus, the debt of your journey has been paid in full!

FAMILY LIFE news Re3 Family ministries will be joining with our entire church family for our mid-week program on Wednesday nights. It is going to be recharged and re-energized and no member of your family is going to want to miss it. If you are parenting or have the responsibility of caring for children you will want to attend our eight week video course called “Boundaries With Kids” based on the best selling book by Dr. Cloud and Dr. Townsend. This class will give parents the tools for raising their kids to take responsibility for their own actions, attitudes and emotions. The eight sessions will lead us through the ins and outs of instilling character in our children – the kind that will help them lead balanced, productive and fulfilling adult lives.
FIRST FRIDAY BISTRO Supper Clubs for the Whole Church Family.
Our church family includes singles, couples, couples with children or without and grandparents. We are going to come together and break bread in our homes with glad and sincere hearts. (Acts 2:46) These supper clubs will look like a real family; multi-generational where everyone has a place where their needs can be shared and met as we live life together. We were created to be a part of God’s Family so make your reservation and join First Friday Bistro. It’s going to be delicious.

Carenet Ministry Christ has called us to care for one another and in that calling He shares His love for us all. In caring for others Carenet reaches out to this congregation, letting all who are called know that First Presbyterian cares for you. Unfortunately, we cannot reach everyone because we do not have enough callers to connect with the WHOLE congregation. With only twenty callers it’s impossible to reach all of you. So if I can find twenty more people who could call eleven people per month and attend one meeting every other month, we can reach our whole congregation and let them know that First Presbyterian cares. Can you help? Call me, Jim Erixson, at 248-7940.

We are beginning and celebrating our 25th year here at First Pres! The sounds of young voices are once again being heard throughout the church Monday through Friday. Classrooms are once again full of preschoolers and their parents, grandparents, families and friends. We are reaching families throughout the Yakima Valley from all backgrounds. Many do not have church homes of their own and are looking for a place to call home. I would like to introduce “Wags” our chapel mascot who greets the children and worships together with them, teaching them about God’s love and grace. This month each of the children will receive their Preschooler’s Bible from Wags to share together with their family. Even if you don’t have a preschool child you can be a part of this program. You can help make an impact by giving towards our scholarship program and/or Bible fund. Every little bit helps. Please pray for each of these families, the children and our staff as we bring the love of Jesus to them along with an excellent early childhood education!

CHILDREN’S MINISTRYnews There’s No Place Like Rome! Imagine what it was like to live and work in what was once considered the center of the world…the busy metropolis of Rome. You would hear the buzz about the teacher Paul, who was under house arrest. You might work with people who followed countless gods, and a very few who followed only one God. Perhaps you’d watch the gradual persecution of those who followed Jesus, a carpenter who had died (and come back to life) proclaiming he was the Son of God. Rome immerses learners of all ages in Bible-times culture, helping kids and adults explore what it might have been like to live as the church was just beginning. Kids will experience new traditions, taste new foods, try new arts and crafts projects and discover that God’s love is the most powerful gift, saving us from our sins. Welcome to Rome…where kids will discover what it was like to be one of the very first Christians! This Wednesday evening program (from 6:30 – 8:15p.m.) is for kids age K – 5th grade whose parents are attending adult Re3 classes at First Pres. Childcare is available for kids birth – 4 years. A mini program will be provided during this time for 3 & 4 year olds in the childcare area.

MISSIONnews Living Waters for the World Update Here is a brief update on where we are at with the Living Waters for the World mission: First of all, we would like to give a very big “Thank you very much!” to all who contributed to the mission! We have met the fundraising goal for covering the equipment expenses for the water system. The Yotholin team that is performing the building improvements to house the water system was involved in a serious auto accident while transporting mangos from Campeche. Arturo’s son, Nathaniel broke his back and has been recovering in the hospital from his surgeries. The others in the accident are fairing better, and they have been working on the building as their health and funding allows (see attached photo that they sent). Please pray for Nathaniel’s recovery. The congregation at Yotholin expect to be able to complete the building this winter, and once these improvements are completed, we will plan an installation trip, likely winter or spring 2010. In addition, a few from FPC will be attending training in October at Calvin Crest, California, to lead future Living Waters mission trips. We are now currently praying for and working to discern the second site for the next water system mission, most likely in Northern or Central Mexico. Thank you for your prayers. Please pray that the brothers at Yotholin continue to heal from the accident and that the improvements to the building will be completed in good time, so that we can go soon to finish the installation with them. The waiting has been an exercise in patience and we are excited to get to know them all better and to help them complete the work. They send greetings and blessings from their church to ours.
