YEAR OF SERVICE

“Glorifying God through equipping disciples to love and serve our neighbors.”

Volume 50

First Presbyterian Church 9 South 8th Ave Yakima, WA 98902

Our Core Values • Glorifying God with our best • Pioneering and ongoing outreach • Engaging and nurturing relationships • Being a cornerstone in the community • Equipping people for ministry through biblical foundation and service

Sermon Series “Kingdom Living: Life After Resurrection” Are You Available? We will continue in our year-long theme of Kingdom Living. Throughout Lent, we have focused on spiritual disciplines and “inner” growth. These disciplines have called for making ourselves available to God; spending time each day in His presence. God’s expectation of our availability doesn’t end with our quiet time with the Father. God expects us to be available to Him for His purpose and mission in the world! When you are actively living out your faith, two things happen. First, God does a good work in you, and He molds you through the experience of good works. Second, you offer a powerful witness to your community and the world. Actions speak much louder than words, and the fruit of a transformed life can be powerfully demonstrated in how you live. In this sermon series, we will examine the early Church in Acts and discover the abundant blessings “Life After Resurrection” offers.

Madison House: Year of celebration Kickoff

Pastor Jack

Jack Peebles Senior Pastor jack.peebles@fpcyakima.com

Dear Church Community, I have yet to come down from the spiritual high I experienced on April 21st! The blended service and open house at the Madison House was an incredible beginning to our yearlong partnership- Kingdom Living: From Our Seat to Spruce Street. One longtime member of our congregation said to me afterward, “That was the most unifying experience I’ve ever had in this congregation.” What was most unifying to me was that we came together to worship God, regardless of worship style preferences or language barriers, and then sought to extend the fellowship of the church beyond the walls of our building! Praise be to God! Stay tuned for more info regarding our yearlong partnership… This month marks significant change in the life of our congregation. We enter a new season of our church’s life without Pastor Jim Erixson, who has faithfully served for twelve years. God bless Jim and Betsy as Jim retires to Vancouver, Washington. They will never be very far from our thoughts and prayers. The Associate Pastor Nominating Committee continues their work as they are actively engaged in the interview process, discerning who it is that will fill our pastoral needs. I am excited they are making progress and anticipate an update in the coming months.

6

Also, our congregational vote on our denominational discernment will take place on May 19, 2013. Once again, we will have one blended service at 9:30 that morning, followed by the vote. Membership will need to be verified, and our discernment team will be set up around 8:30 to allow for people to check-in prior to the service. To prepare you for the vote, we have mailed out a Frequently Asked Question document to all active members. The document is also available on our website. A Chat with the Elders is set for immediately after the 9:30 and 11:00 worship services on May 5th if you have any last minute questions. Stay tuned for more information about May 19th in the coming weeks. Please be praying for the upcoming vote, the search for an Associate Pastor, the yearlong partnership with the Madison House, and for the next season in the church’s history as God calls us toward Him! Living and loving for Him,

ck Pastor Ja

Please extend a big Yakima welcome to Harold Diaz!

I am pleased to share with you that Harold, my niece’s husband, arrived here from Colombia. He and his wife, Tatys, are musicians. They came to visit us for a week in February of 2012 and held a music workshop for our youth/ children. They kept in touch with the youth teaching music via Skype. Harold will be here for three months. He will teach piano, guitar, bass guitar and singing classes during the week and also help us leading in worship. He will be our pro-bono intern.

He will also work on his English and in that regard we are thankful for Buzz and Robin Rowe, who have opened their home to host Harold for a month. He will have a chance to practice and improve his English as he interacts with his hosts. God is an awesome provider! Rejoice with us as we rejoice having Harold with us.

Missions: Cambodia

And the ADVENTURE Continues! Hello friends and family all around the world! Yesterday morning, as Garth, Lyla and I (Caroline) were having breakfast together, we looked at each other, and talked about how sometimes, especially in the last 2 months, our lives feel like the TV show “The AMAZING RACE.” Then we said how we wouldn’t trade our lives right now for anything, as it is such an adventurous, risky, crazy, wild, humbling, great journey it is to follow the call of Jesus on our lives! Since our last update much has happened here in Battambang, as we’ve had a crazy start to the year, but nonetheless, we are grateful and thankful for the privilege it is to serve Jesus in various ways all around the globe!

Here are some highlights from our last two months: 1) Like we mentioned in our previous update, we went to Korea for a week to tour with Loren Cunningham, the founder of our organization Youth With A Mission and it was a privilege to share with the body of Christ in Korea as well plant seeds of sending more missionaries into the harvest field! 2) Right after our tour in Korea, we welcomed Loren to Cambodia, where we did a 6-day tour of the three major cities in Cambodia, including our city of Battambang. We partnered with the local churches to send forth the message of the power of the Gospel to transform Cambodia and to help empower the Body of Christ to accomplish their vision to plant churches in each of the 11,000 villages in Cambodia by the year 2021. Loren was so inspirational in challenging the Body of Christ to rise up and call forth a missions movement out of Cambodia!

8

3) Garth has had the privilege of using his gift of teaching to serve different Discipleship Training Schools all over the world. In the last month, he’s taught in our 2 DTS’s in Cambodia, 2 DTS’s in Australia, as well as teaching the book of Ecclesiastes in our School of Biblical Studies in Battambang! 4) Our final update and most exciting update is that our future Campus property is in the process of being transformed by the fill dirt!!! Two weeks ago, the contracts were finalized and signed for a company to fill our land. It has been a journey to research with which company to hire, but thankfully in the end, our leadership team prayed about it and felt to go with one particular company! THANK YOU to those who sacrificially and generously gave towards the

first phase of purchasing the land for the campus project! Thank you for sowing into this harvest generation in the nation of Cambodia! We will keep you updated about the next steps of the building phase. Prayer Requests: 1) Please pray for continued strength, wisdom and joy for our family as we continue to lead out and be obedient to what Jesus has for our ministry. 2) As our ministry continues to expand, please pray for the development of our leaders, specifically our Cambodian leaders to be trained up and used by God for His glory! 3) For the filling of dirt process to go well and for the physical and spiritual foundation of our ministry location to be in accordance to God’s Word. We cannot express how much your partnership means to our family and ministry! THANK YOU for your prayers, encouragement and financial support to see Cambodia changed in one generation.

Children

Ready for the adventure of a lifetime?

Susie Woodin Children’s Ministries susie.woodin@fpcyakima.com

At Kingdom Rock, kids discover how to stand strong for God! Kingdom Rock is filled with incredible Biblelearning experiences for kids to see, hear, touch, and even taste! Sciency-Fun Gizmos, teambuilding games, cool Bible songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the royally rockin’ activities that help faith flow into real life. Since everything is hands-on, kids might get a little messy. All kids who attend will receive an official Kingdom Rock t-shirt that they should wear every day along with play clothes and safe shoes. Plus, we will help kids discover how to see evidence of God in everyday life…something we call God Sightings. Get ready to hear that phrase a lot!

10

Kids who attend will also participate in a handson mission project, through our daily “Survivor Challenge”. This allows kids to show God’s love to the Yakima Fire Department by bringing a particular item each day of VBS. Music is a huge part of VBS each year, so don’t forget to pick up a music CD in the main office for $10.00…that way kids will come to VBS and already know the words!

Where kids stand strong for God! Kingdom R ock VBS June 24-2 8, 2013 Parents, grandparents, and friends are invited to join us in the “Royal Courtyard” (aka the gym) each day at 11:30, because that’s when we’ll be having Fanfare Finale—a daily celebration of God’s love that you won’t want to miss! So mark these dates on your calendar: June 2428. The fun starts at 8:45a and will end at Noon. Pick up a registration form in the church office, the connection center, or print one from the website www.fpcyakima.com We can’t wait to see you all at this life changing adventure! Devotional Life After Resurrection Together they wrapped Jesus' body in a long linen cloth with the spices, as is the Jewish custom of burial. John 19:40 Janet Krieger

The question before us is how do we reveal the body of Christ?

We each have many opportunities to present the love and mercy of Christ in our homes, Early Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found workplaces, and neighborhoods. Pat Carey has established a culture of love and service that the stone had been rolled away from the in his auto dealership. For many years, and entrance. Marriage Marriage Retreat Great Experience!

Participants in the four marriage Enrich small groups enjoyed a meaningful time together at Camp Ghormley the weekend of March 15 – 17. The five couples who came up Friday night relaxed with games and snacks. Saturday morning we were joined by several more couples for a day focused on building couple intimacy. Dr. Joy Staley offered lively presentations interspersed with discussion groups. Strengthening the spiritual bond in marriage was the other focus of the retreat, ably led by Jack Peebles and Tyler Van Horn. Tyler reminded couples that a healthy spirit-centered relationship not only benefits that particular marriage and family, but also leaks out to positively impact others in their circle of influence.

their spouse’s response to various questions like, “how many pairs of shoes would your husband say that you own?” We are grateful to the Ghormley staff who went the extra mile to keep us supplied with cozy fires, yummy food, and private cabin spaces for couples who stayed overnight. The camp was transformed into a romantic get-away where spouses drew closer to each other, deepened friendships with other couples, and grew in their understanding of God’s love and provision through the sacred bond of marriage. A new small group marriage Enrich series will begin shortly after Labor Day, culminating in a retreat at Ghormley shortly before Thanksgiving. If you are interested in being part of a small group please let Shan Trick know by calling the church: 248-7940.
