Dear Church Family, We are in the midst of a sermon series in which we are focusing on growing closer to God. My hope is we are giving you good practical steps straight from the Bible. Essentially, in order to draw closer to God, you must be more like Christ. I believe we can do this through vigorous training. The Bible offers a variety of ways in which we can train. Over the last several Sunday mornings, we have highlighted some of these as we have talked about reading Scripture, worshiping God in our everyday lives, and serving God and the church through the gifts He gives to us.

One area in which we truly struggle is the area of money. I know there are some that would be very happy if we never mentioned finances in the life of the church. Did you know, however, that Jesus talked of money more than any other subject except the Kingdom of God? In these uncertain economic times, it is easy to feel overwhelmed or uneasy. It’s easy to fall into the trap of worshiping the almighty dollar. That’s why it is so important we do talk about money. Back in high school, I had a friend whose parents were very active in our Presbyterian Church. Once, I remember them sharing with me their philosophy on giving. They believed that since they gave so much of their time (one was an Elder and the other was very active in the choir), they didn’t need to give monetarily. Essentially, they compartmentalized their giving. Their reasoning made sense at the time. Some folks, after all, do give more of their time than others. Before too long I began to wonder what happens in the months when the time you give is limited. Because their giving was proportionate to different aspects of their lives, how did they balance it? Did they make up for those “inactive” months by cutting a check or did they make up for it by doubling the time they spent at church the next month? We make things so complicated, don’t we? Richard Foster in “The Challenge of the Disciplined Life” argues that the call to discipleship in money is not one of complexity, but one of simplicity: “The issue of money would be much easier to deal with if it were all bad. Our task then would be to denounce it and withdraw from it. That, however, is the one thing we cannot do if we want to be faithful to the biblical witness. Though the Bible gives repeated warnings about the dark side of money, it also contains a stream of teaching on the light side of money. In this tradition, money is seen as a blessing from God and, even more startling, as a means of enhancing our relationship with God” -Richard Foster, p.37. Giving is not something you can compartmentalize, but rather something that encompasses every aspect of your being. We give, not because we feel we must put in the necessary hours required, but because we have joy and gratitude for the gift of Christ in our lives. The Session and I want you to know that we know our church family is feeling the economic crunch of the country. As a result, we are doing our best to be good stewards of what God is providing to the Church through your giving. We have made commitments to cut our administrative costs through the rest of 2009. Some of what is done through paid staff could and is being accomplished through volunteer service. If we continue to strive to become a missional church, we need to recognize that every person has gifts they can utilize to further the mission and ministry of this church! We do not want to hinder the mission of the First Presbyterian Church, but at the same time, we know families are suffering. As we continue in 2009, let me encourage you to think of ways in which you can give of, not just your finances, but also your gifts, time, and energy. Two questions to ponder as you seek to give back to God: For what are you thankful to God in your life? How can you respond to Him, who blesses us so abundantly? In the grip of grace,

Experiencing group life away from daily interruptions…
On a whim, my small group decided to go to the Oregon Coast over Memorial weekend. What a time we had! We laughed, cried, ate, played on the beach, walked and walked, shared lots of stories, sang, prayed and just thoroughly enjoyed each other! This time together was such a blessing – time to get to know each other better, time to pray for one another, time to just be goofy. How awesome that God gives us exactly what we need when we need it. The weekend away was hope for rest and time to focus on Christ. Matthew 18:20 says, “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” God met us right where we were. He showered us in the beauty of the Oregon Coast. Thank you, Jesus!

We provide food—you bring your gear (and yourself in reasonable shape!) and we will get you to the top. 8/7 to 8/9: FAMILY MINISTRIES CAMPING TRIP #2 We will travel to beautiful Mossyrock Park for a Friday night to Sunday afternoon for another camp-out. This one will include boats and watersports. Mid High Pool Party July 12 Bring your towel and your swimsuit to Sunday School. We will leave straight from FPC to the Hein’s house for another wild middle school pool party. Be sure to have a ride home by 1:30p. High School Pool Parties July 22 and July 29 From 6p to 9p we will be hanging out at the Gustafson’s pool for BBQ, swimming, and worship. Don’t forget to bring $2 for dinner. Summer D-Groups D-Groups start July 21 for high school students. We will meet on Tuesdays from 10a to 3p for study, prayer, small groups, lunch, and time to hang out together. Talk to Tyler or Karin if you are interested in being in a group. Mid High 2 @ Ghormley July 19 through July 25 our middle school students are going up to Camp Ghormley for “Super Hero Summer”. This fall as begin our 2009-10 school year we will be celebrating 25 years of serving this church and community as an outreach ministry. This missional program reaches many in our community, many who attend other churches and many with no church home at all. We have seen many families who come to this preschool coming and joining our family here at First Presbyterian. How can you help us with our mission of Spreading God’s Word by reaching, promoting, supporting and influencing children, their families and the community? Our scholarship program needs your help now more than ever. We estimate that we will need at least $5000 in our scholarship budget to meet the needs of the families this next year. Our desire is to never turn down anyone who cannot come to this preschool because of the cost. By God’s grace, Julie has been given the ability to bring truth to life through music. The way that the Lord works through her is amazing! As I was working outside the other day, I heard my four year old neighbor girl playing to an imaginary audience. As the Master of Ceremony, she was thoroughly enjoying introducing her audience to spectacular entertainment and fearless feats of wonder. I was drawn into her tiny voice and the confidence she maintained. That is how I want to proclaim the healing power of Jesus Christ, with confidence and boldness. In Philippians 4:12, Peter declares the painful truth.“I know what it is to be in need.” We have all been in need, are in need or will be in need at some point in this life, right beside those around us. Those needs may include physical, emotional, spiritual, or mental pain. Death, job loss, addictions, divorce, depression, abuse, anxiety, broken relationships cause so much pain! Peter goes on to declare the hope and courage knowing that we do not have to figure it out ourselves or rely on our own power, and declares the joyous truth that “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” Jesus Christ wants to give us strength, hope and healing! Peter also thanks the Philippians for ‘sharing in his troubles’. How many of us think we are alone when we are in pain? That there is no one to talk to or who would understand? Jesus wants to hear from you. He understands your pain. He wants us to have a support system. We were not created to live this life alone. Careforce Lifekeys is celebrating six years helping people understand themselves and others, experience living life better, build healthy relationships with others and most importantly grow in their relationship with Jesus. Ghormley Meadow Christian Camp is 70 years young this summer and we are planning a birthday party for Saturday July 4th. Bring your family and friends up to the Meadow for a special time of remembering all that God has done since 1939 to bring the hope of the gospel to children, youth and families in the Pacific Northwest. Joining us for the day will be: Margo Dennis (Ghormley) and Helen Wood (Ghormley), daughters of Dr. Charles Ghormley, founder of the camp. Fred Johnson, first full-time director of the camp coming from Florida. Sonny Salsbury, via video recorded message, and Curt and Kathleen McFarland. We are hoping to see many people who have had an important part to play in the ministry of the camp over the years, including past board members, staff, campers and supporters of the camp. The blue grass band “Camaraderie� will perform on the outdoor stage during our delicious BBQ on the meadow. Family activities will be available including the pool, the zipline, the giant swing, and games. You can also just relax, enjoy the fresh mountain air, sit in the shade of the Ponderosa Pine and remenice with friends. We will have a camp history display as well as dedicate our memorial tree grove. The memorial tree grove will be an opportunity for you to honor a loved one by having a tree planted on the grounds to add to the living memories of this beloved place.

Celebrating with Ana Lucas-García We rejoice with Ana as she finished her CLP training at Whitworth University back in June. This nine month Commission Lay Pastor program has equipped Ana to serve Christ better in Cristo Vive and here at First Pres. This is one step in her on going desire to learn more about God and to be prepared to guide others in their Christian journey. Way to go Ana!
I long to see Hispanic people worshiping God, feasting with Him through growth in Christ, reaching out to those who are lost in the Latino community and discovering with them a foretaste of heaven.
Beginnings
Birthplace: I was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon. My family moved to the Seattle area during my senior year of high school. I was thrilled by the move and I fell in love with Seattle while attending Seattle Pacific University. Seattle is also where I met my husband Bill. Age you accepted Christ? I asked Jesus into my heart at six years of age, kneeling at the foot of my bed with my mother. How did you meet Christ? I was a Christian since childhood but Christ become everything to me – when I was about to turn 30. I was a new mother and had left my career behind to be a stay at home mom. It was also at this time that we had moved to Yakima. It was during this major time of transition that I realized my true need for Christ as my savior and redeemer. I was unable to be all that I wanted and needed to be in my own strength – and that is when I truly surrendered my life to Him. The rest of the story is still being written! What drew you to First Presbyterian? With out a doubt it was Gods direction and leading that brought us to First Pres. I was looking for a MOPS group and through a series of perfectly timed God moments, ended up connecting with the women of First Pres who were starting a MOPS group here at First Pres. That is what drew Family Ministries Coordinator me here, the amazing community and fellowship of this church Volunteer body is why we have stayed and made it our church home for over 10 years.

What are your hopes for this particular body of Christ? I believe we are on the verge of exploding with the Power of Jesus Christ working in the lives of His people here at First Pres. He is so clearly moving in unbelievable ways all around us. I just feel like I get to be a part of His great purpose being fulfilled right here at First Pres Yakima. What is God currently teaching you? That His power is in His people. That’s you and me. Wow! He is teaching me that if we as His people access this power we can do miraculous things. Not because of us but because of His power. I have recently been thinking about the people who built our beautiful church building during a similar economic time as we are facing now. These people acted on faith that God would provide a way to use their sacrifices to do something amazing. When you look at the beauty of this magnificent structure you know they weren’t scrimping and holding back doubting that God would provide. They went for it believing God was going to do something amazing! He certainly did and I look forward to seeing what miracles we will see in our day as we give sacrificially of our time and money to see on earth as it is in Heaven!
About Our New Logo First Presbyterian Church of Yakima is not defined by our building, but rather by the relationships we have with God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) and one another. The open door emphasizes the journey we are on and our mission to open that door for others, leading them to the cross of Jesus Christ. The new logo takes seriously our mission to: Worship God – Christian faith begins with the understanding that God made, loves, and came to rescue and restore us in Jesus and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Our response to God is to express our thanks for all He has done for us, for who He is, and to worship Him as God. Grow into Christ-like maturity – Getting to know God is a process. We meet together to study, listen, and learn. As we get to know who Jesus is and what He has done for us, we humbly begin to reflect the heart and priorities of Jesus in our lives and relationships. In growing closer to Him, our desire to learn and follow Him grows as well.
Reach those in our neighborhoods who are unconnected to Jesus – As we worship and grow we will develop a genuine love for others around us. In response to that love, we want to help connect a lost and hurting world to the love and hope of Jesus. Impact our community and world - Actions are just as important as words. We are called by God to live out what we believe in very tangible ways to our neighbors across the street, the neighborhood surrounding our church, wherever we work or study, throughout the valley, and across the world. We are on a journey together: loving God through worshiping and growing and loving our neighbors through reaching and impacting. First Presbyterian Church: A Family of Faith, A Home For You!
