Sermon Series Kingdom Living: The Inviting Church “If you build it, they will come.” -Field of Dreams Who could ever forget that line from the baseball movie classic Field of Dreams? The plot of the movie entailed building a baseball diamond in the middle of a corn field, getting a game started, and waiting until paying spectators simply showed up to watch. Yes, there were other plot points, but that was the gist of it! This “wait until they come” approach has been utilized with great success within the church for the greater part of the last century. Churches that built nice facilities and put together the best “game” would be flooded with visitors who were looking for something to do on Sundays. Today, this is no longer the case. Aside from a few exceptions, this passive approach of sitting back and waiting for the people to come hither doesn’t work anymore. This is attributed to changes in the culture as we are now living in a post-Christian society. Many of the churches that peaked in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s have either plateaued or begun to decline. Thus, the challenge for the church today is to move from a passive posture to a more active position. In an athletic stance, one has to shift their weight from his/her heals to the balls of his/her feet. Instead of sitting back, ready to “welcome,” we need to go out and “invite”! Here’s the thing- we need to invite people to more than just Sunday morning! We need to invite people to get to know Jesus and experience the blessings of that relationship and being part of a community of believers. This necessitates believers being more active in sharing and living their faith. Within this summer series, we will explore what it means to be an active “Inviting Church.”

Jack Peebles - Senior Pastor - jack.peebles@fpcyakima.com
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 Dear FPC Community, This past month on May 19, 2013, the membership of First Presbyterian Church of Yakima voted in favor of pursuing dismissal from our present denomination, the PC(USA), into ECO: The Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians. The vote was decisive at 92%. Having received this clear mandate from the congregation, the Session voted unanimously on May 28, 2013 to officially request dismissal from Central Washington Presbytery. Additionally, the Presbytery Discernment Team will soon convey an official report to presbytery, recommending the formation of an Administrative Commission to draw up dismissal terms. Thus, dismissal is determined, but it will take several months to complete the process. We will keep you informed regarding the steps toward completion. I know this time is bittersweet for many. I confess to you that as I was driving home from the congregational vote, a feeling of sadness overwhelmed me. The reality of transitioning out of a denomination into which I was raised and ordained hit me hard. I literally cried on my drive home. At the same time, I am filled with hope. I am excited about our future. First, I am excited to be a part of ECO: The Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians (http://eco-pres.org/). We are the fifth church from Central Washington Presbytery to enter into ECO. I am thrilled we can maintain formal relationships with the people of the churches with whom we share much in terms of relationships and mission.
6
Even though our denominational affiliation will change, our mission remains the same: Glorifying God through Equipping Disciples to Love and Serve our Neighbors! I am excited about the variety of ways we continue to live into our mission. We have not been distracted from this mission. For example, our year-long partnership with the Madison House continues this summer. The theme is Kingdom Living: From Our Seat to Spruce Street. We are just getting started, following our successful kick-off in April. Two hundred and sixty nine Madison House interest cards were returned recently, indicating that people were committed to serving in some way, shape, or form. One hundred and thirty seven indicated a commitment of prayer or finances and 132 indicated other levels of commitment. Praise God for faithful people! I am excited that Vacation Bible School is just around the corner! Susie Woodin and her team are working hard to get things ready for June 24-28. I have said it before and I’ll say it again: VBS is one of the very best examples we have in the life of the congregation where the entire church comes together for a common purpose- to love and serve the children of our community! I love it! It’s the best week of the year! This from a guy whose birthday is the day before Christmas! This edition of Here@First is filled with other ways through which we are living out our mission. I encourage you to take a look. I am especially excited to have Jocelyn Larsen on staff. She is our part-time Director of Connecting Ministry (page 10). Please make sure you introduce yourself to her on Sunday morning. Our future is bright and filled with promise! I am excited. I hope you are too! Living and loving for Him,
ck Pastor Ja

Miracle on Spruce Street A vast crowd was there as He stepped from the boat, and He had compassion on them and healed their sick. That evening the disciples came to Him and said, "This is a desolate place, and it is getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves." But Jesus replied, "That isn't necessary -- you feed them." "Impossible!" they exclaimed. "We have only five loaves of bread and two fish!" "Bring them here," He said. Then He told the people to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and asked God's blessing on the food. Breaking the loaves into pieces, He gave some of the bread and fish to each disciple, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate as much as they wanted, and they picked up twelve baskets of leftovers. About five thousand men had eaten from those five loaves, in addition to all the women and children! Matthew 14:13-21 May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done here on earth, just as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:10 The last sack lunch had been handed out on the Sunday of the Madison House celebration. Three hundred twelve lunches had been made and passed out to those in attendance and the reality was 312 was not enough . . . 20 people went without a lunch that day. As the last sack lunch was handed out those serving looked in every sack, box and cooler for anything remaining to share, but found every bit of food had been given out.
Kurt Volker was pulling a cooler across the asphalt to empty the ice and water when he was approached by a man, in the alley behind Madison House, asking if there was any food to share. The man appeared hungry and fatigued, perhaps homeless was the thought that came into Kurt’s mind. Kurt kindly explained there was no food remaining, that all the lunches had been given out. As the man turned to leave Kurt tipped the cooler and opened the lid to empty the ice. To his amazement laying on top of the ice, in the cooler that had just been checked for an extra lunch, was a wrapped sandwich! Kurt was able to provide food to the man in need. It may be difficult for people to believe that a miracle could happen and yet God can and does provide miracles for people today. It was the same when Jesus walked the earth; many doubted His power and authority. Those who witnessed miracles were those who walked with Him all the time. We can experience heaven, the miraculous invading our everyday lives, when we pursue a close personal relationship with Jesus and follow Him daily, learning to expect the unexpected. God is still doing miracles, healing and providing and speaking into human lives. Jesus promised that we would do greater things than He did because He went to the Father. Let us continue to expect great things of God working through His Son in us. Don’t miss the amazing! Learn to expect the unexpected. The truth is, anyone who believes in Me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. John 14:12

Missions - Trailseekers TrailSeekers is a ministry that has been going on over 23 years in the Yakima area for at risk kids, elementary through high school, and their families. FPC has helped sponsor TrailSeekers and has housed the weekly elementary program for many years. Each year there is an experience of a lifetime that is used as the portal to TrailSeekers called The Orcas Encampment. This is where 21 boys from Yakima and 21 boys from the TrailSeekers at First Presbyterian in Kennewick, who are going into first, second and third grades are chosen for this unique adventure. Along with the 42 boys there are 42 high school mentors who come alongside the boys. There are six cabin groups called Pods, because the camp is on Orcas Island and a group of whales is called a pod. Each pod has three adult teachers, seven boys and seven mentors. The staff is completed by a mentor coordinator, a nurse, clowns, and a huge kitchen and support staff. The selection process starts in Yakima with teachers from Ridgeview, Adams and Barge Lincoln submitting suggestions of names of atrisk boys. Next comes the interview process, home visits and a series of lunches and other meetings with the boys selected. This year’s encampment is June 16 through June 21. The Yakima mentors and teachers will be commissioned on June 16 at the 11:00a service at FPC. The campers will be picked up at their homes and taken to the YMCA earlier that morning and brought to FPC for the opening at 12:15p where they will meet their mentor for the first time. After the opening we go back to the Y for lunch and a magic show with Ronald McDonald. We leave for Anacortes on two commercial buses where we spend the night at First Presbyterian Church. We get up early to catch the ferry to Orcas Island on Monday morning.
8
While on Orcas we stay in cabins at Moran State Park. There will be daily teachings by the teachers of each pod. Also there will be swimming, hiking, camp fires, and many daily adventures including riding in yachts supplied by the Orcas Yacht Club to an island for the day, along with some other surprises. Thursday we pack up early and ride the ferry back to the mainland and head to the Seattle Zoo for the day. We spend the night at Lakecity Presbyterian Church in Seattle. Friday, we go to the Pacific Science Center in Seattle, then head back to Yakima in the afternoon. Our closing will be in the Sanctuary at FPC at 5:00p. The opening on Sunday and closing on Friday are open to anyone who would like to attend. Our main goal in all of the fun is to introduce the boys to a relationship with Jesus which will be nurtured over the next ten to twelve years through the elementary, middle school and high school programs. One exciting thing that began a few years ago was the addition of girls to the weekly elementary program. There are other camping experiences called Short Stops that take place throughout the summer for all the various age groups. A special thanks to First Presbyterian, especially the Service Ministry Team (missions), for the partnership with TrailSeekers over the years. If you would like further information about TrailSeekers and a way to serve in this very valuable and needed ministry please contact me at, stolzie43@gmail.com or Greg Nebeker, gregagape@hotmail.com. Serving together in Jesus’ name,
John Stolzenbach

Connecting
Jocelyn Larsen - Director of Connecting Ministries - jocelyn.larsen@fpcyakima.com
elyn c o J e m o c Wel Meet our new Director of Connecting Ministries My name is Jocelyn {Edgerly} Larsen. I was born and raised in Yakima where I graduated from West Side Christian School (now Riverside Christian) in 2000. My parents taught me about Jesus from the time I was very young, but it was during my college years at Washington State University (where I got my degree in Genetics and Cell Biology) that God especially got ahold of my heart to reach the lost and hurting in this world with the good news of the Gospel.
10
After being very involved as a student with Campus Crusade for Christ, I elected to intern with CCC for one year so that I could stay in the freshman dorms for a fifth year in order to reach out to them in Christcentered community. It was also at WSU that I met Jason Larsen (a dashingly handsome and gifted musician who also volunteered with CCC) and fell in love with him while listening to him play jazz saxophone in the bars of Pullman. My favorite things about Jason are that he has an amazing unceasing reservoir of generosity and selflessness, he frees me up entirely to pursue God and all that He has created me to be and do, and he is an incredible dad and hero for our two boys. We married in 2005, worked with
Campus Crusade for Christ at our alma mater for 6 years, and then left CCC in September 2011 after a very introspective, prayerful, torn-hearted six month process of discernment. In the meantime, we had two boys: Howard (November 2009) and Stone (June 2011). We moved to Yakima in September 2012, where Jason has his own business doing web design / marketing / business-consulting (qoalagroup. com), and where I [mostly] stay home raising two boys to love God & others - and to be boys, not barbarians. I am a reformer at heart; I love to solve problems and restore things to life and fullness. I also strongly value family relationships. My heart especially beats for God's kingdom to be moved forward in the areas of spiritual formation, conflict resolution, selfawareness, healthy family life, authentic Christian community,
and stewardship. If I were a pullstring doll, one of my lines would be, "Don't even get me started!" -- I can be very passionate and talkative if you get me on the right subject! I love to read, run, teach, and decorate our home. I read mostly classics -- literary classics and old Christian classics (where I've met and befriended lots of delightful dead people). I run mostly because it's the best physical and psychological therapy I have found, but sometimes I race -half marathons and triathlons are my favorites. As far as teaching goes, I love just to share what God is teaching me in my journey -- sometimes I get to do that aloud via retreats or conferences; the rest of the time I just journal and blog (lifewithjocelyn.com). And, I long for our home to be a beautiful, welcoming, comfortable place for anyone, everyone, anytime.
