“Love Well Through Drops of Grace”

OCTOBER 2021 VOL 129

Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church

Pastor — Curt McFarland, Pastor

“… a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming too conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weakness, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.’” – 2 Corinthians 12:7-9

POWER MADE PERFECT IN WEAKNESS Power made perfect in weakness? Boast all the more gladly of my weakness? That’s not the message gaining traction at leadership conferences, or church trainings, I’ve been a part of. Weakness is not celebrated but rather seen as a character flaw. It certainly isn’t just churches that speak out against weakness. I do not recall seeing “Pleading 3x didn’t help Paul... glad you are feeling weak” on a Get-Well card. I’ve attended large Christian church services and events where the brightest and best have captivated those of us in attendance. I’ve listened to teachers and preachers who have had the ear of presidents and the powerful. My home church (in a town of 20,000) grew from a few hundred to more than two thousand. My last year of high school youth group attendance topped 350. Eloquent sermons are easy to download, enjoyable to digest, often convicting and informative. Larger than life personalities preach and pout, strut and sing, entertain and impress. Sadly, some of those who are seen as the most gifted and given the most power fall fast and hard. Power and Pride leads to serious moral, financial, theological, hubris, fill-in-the-blank problems. What of, “I will boast all the more gladly of my weakness, so that the power of Christ may rest on me?” Have I missed something? Have we? What is Grace, and the Christians at Grace, suppose to do with the weaknesses we know we have? Hide them? Ignore them? Or, boast that in our weakness the power of Christ is proclaimed to the world? My home church did not influence my life and faith because it increased in numbers. It shaped my life and faith because of the singular desire of many in that church community to love Jesus. Because of that, they tried to serve and love others: my mom, my sister and myself included. That decision affected the big and small choices they made as they attempted to put their broken lives on the line for Jesus 2

in a hurting world. They altered the life direction and focus of those, like me, who watched them and listened to them, weak and used by God. In the passage above from 2 Corinthians Paul is the one afflicted by a “thorn in the flesh.” I have my ideas about what his thorn was ... but Paul doesn’t go into detail. Three times he pleaded with God for a miraculous healing. God’s answer... no. And yet Paul is honored today as one of the greatest Christian leaders, evangelists, teachers of all time. Many see him as a Rockstar Christian. Interestingly, he did not see himself that way. Others he met were not impressed by his appearance and eloquence. Two chapters earlier, in 2nd Corinthians chapter 10, Paul wrote this about what others said about him, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account.” Paul was OK with that. In fact, he came to the place where he understood that his weaknesses magnified the power and grace of God! Jesus does not need us to pretend we are perfect, or to assert that we have gained complete victory... with a little help from Him. Our imperfections, weaknesses, failures, highlight the beauty, mercy, patience and power of God at work in us. In His Church Jesus does not need a slick presentation, a bank of stage lights, an electric amplifier, a magician, an eloquent preacher, a polished video to win over hearts and minds. He has been, and will always be, attractive, powerful, and life-changing in every generation (past, present, and future). Our life, all lives, depend on the One who said, “whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” – Mark 10

With that in mind … Martha Mooney in Northern Ireland, Shirley Peebles in Phoenix, Dick Orphan in Danville, Debbie Butler in Philadelphia. What each of these four have in common... it is unlikely that anyone in Yakima knows any of them. They aren’t world famous, nation famous, state famous (that I know of) but each had a love for Jesus that left a significant impression on my life. Martha on her hands and knees scrubbing a neighbor’s kitchen floor. Shirley loving generations of church kids in spite of the fact she had none

Community Life Groups of her own. Dick standing in at a Father & Son dinner for a young boy whose own dad would not. Debbie opening her home and offering Christian generosity and acceptance. Grace of Christ is a beautiful Christian community. More than 25 years ago Kathaleen and I were drawn to you, not because of size or structure, but because of the decision so many of you had made to love Jesus and love others. Grace of Christ (as a continuation of First Pres) does not, and never will, love perfectly but we will keep picking ourselves up when we fail. We do that because we know He loves

us perfectly. As we admit (boast of) our weaknesses we discover the power of Jesus while our love for Him leads us to love others in the places we work, shop, study, walk, live, and gather for worship! In this with you, and most importantly with Him, – Pastor Curt

Our Dear Friend – Maurice Peugh As I’m preparing articles for this October Grace Alive another dear friend, Maurice Peugh, a long-time valuable part of our Grace of Christ family, has passed from this life into the eternal presence of God. His capacity for compassion was huge, as was his attention to detail around the church. The care he took of wood and rock, floors and doors, lawns and trees, tables and windows, was an intentional expression of love for all walking into Grace. Thank You Lord Maurice Peugh for Maurice! I could easily name numerous others who have left us and gone on ahead to heaven itself. The line between here and there is thin, and seems thinner with each passing year. With each loss we remember the deep

3

faith, the generous heart, the beautiful life, of those we love. They are our friends, family members, brothers and sisters in Christ connected with Grace of Christ. We are left with wonderful memories, and an empty place at the table, the pew. There is, for me, a mixture of grief and promise, tears of sorrow and tears of joy. Grieving is inevitable when we love others and allow others to love us. Connections we make in the church amplify and multiply sorrow as our relationships grow deeper, wider, more real. Thankfully those connections here at Grace also elevate love, hope, and joy too. Sometimes the memories of those who are gone are not wonderful. Sometimes all we remember is the pain of an unrepaired relationship. In the midst of whatever season of grief you are in, or have recently gone through, we are in it together... and Jesus meets us, and stays close, even as we walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death. Dear Maurice and all of our deeply loved family and friends, we remember and give thanks to God for you, until we too cross that thin line. – Pastor Curt

JESUS THE WAY THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE John 14:1-6

GOD IS WITH YOU ALWAYS! God has been preparing us for such a times like these, times where there is much confusion and division, where people do not know what to believe or who to believe. It seems that everyone is telling the truth, but we are disappointed when we discover the falsehood of things. God has prepared us to face every situation, no matter how hard it is or seems to be. He has given us His word, the Bible, and it is there where we find the truth; He, God, is giving us wisdom, knowledge, and discernment for each day. It is time to Believe in God, and in His Son Jesus and in The Holy Spirit and all the promises He has for His people. It is time to Love God and to Love our Neighbors, it is time to enjoy our families and friends. Please don’t wait another year, because this is the year that the Lord has made, rejoice and be glad in it. Please light a candle, decorate your home with things that welcomes God, you and others, things that make you feel good and great. Invite the Holy Spirit, make time to read the Bible with your love ones, and have a daily devotional, share memories, tell people how much you appreciate them, and thank God for sending them into your life. Pray for your family, friends and neighbors. Pray for our Church, Pray for our City, Nation, and World. Remember “Emmanuel” God with us always! Always seek the truth and the truth will set you free. “Do not let your heart be troubled (afraid, cowardly). Believe [confidently] in God and trust in Him, [have faith, hold on to it, rely on it, keep going and] believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places. If it were not so, I would have told you, because I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and I will take you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also. And [to the place] where I am going, you know the way.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going; so how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the [only] Way [to God] and the [real] Truth and the [real] Life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” – John 14:1-6 (AMP) 5

– Juan 14:1-6 (AMP)

ADAMS OPEN HOUSE

CASA ABIERTA EN ADAMS

What a blessing for Grace of Christ to be able to serve at the Adams Open House. On August 23rd, 2021, many families came to the event where we served over 450 meals. Grace of Christ volunteers came to serve and share the Love of Christ with our community. We were all impressed with the response from the families. Also, grandparents came to meet the school and the teachers of their grandchildren and at the same time received a warm welcome from all the volunteers of our church.

This event gave us the opportunity to connect with administrators, teachers, students, and their families. Our desire is to continue helping and serving in the schools of our city by sharing the Love of our almighty God and sharing His resources with those most in need. Today more than ever we have the opportunity to teach the real values and guide students on the right path. We can all help; it is never too late to offer a helping hand to our brothers in need. The most important thing is that we know that God is our provider, He has called us to serve with a willing heart, and He will open the doors for us to enter. “Behold, I stand at the door [of the church] and continually knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him (restore him), and he with Me. He who overcomes [the world through believing that Jesus is the Son of God], I will grant to him [the privilege] to sit beside Me on My throne, as I also 6

Together we can walk the path that God has laid out for us. We need to invest our time and use our gifts and talents with those God has commanded us to serve. I personally thank all the volunteers who came to the event and gave their valuable time, but more than anything, I thank you for showing love and affection for all teachers, students, and families of Adams community. I know from the bottom of my heart that Our Lord is very pleased with the excellent work that all of you are doing inside and outside our church and it is He who always receives all the Glory and honor that He deserves. Family Ministry — Sarah Huck Family Ministries Coordinator

I LOVE THIS CHURCH!

Greetings Grace Community. Can I just say I love this Church. I love the people, I love the children, I love the staff, I love the ministries, I love the atmosphere, I love the building, I even love the drive from my home down Summitview and seeing the bell tower in the distance. There is something about Grace, I believe it is the Holy Spirit’s presence. The love of Jesus in us and through us is the fabric of our relationships here at Grace. When I was thinking about writing this article one thought came to mind. It was this; people are always in a hurry. I (Sarah) am usually traveling about 100 miles an hour. My sense was the Lord was saying “Slow down, don’t hurry. When people, children come into MY house I want them to know and experience MY love and experience the peace that surpasses all understanding.” My heart, speaking for myself now, is that when families and children and people of all ages come through our doors, they will experience this peace. Not just in their mind but in body and soul. That even their posture would be changed from rigid to relaxed. This would be a place where people don’t want to leave. They are not in a rush to get on with their day; mowing yards, watching football, grocery shopping etc. Grace would be a retreat away from the world of hurry. So, I want to invite you, your families, and your children to come and experience Grace the way I have. The way my family has.

PLEASE REGISTER FOR GRACE KIDS CLASSES

Please remember to register your child for Sunday Classes at the Family at Grace table in the Garden Room each week. Children will join their parents in the sanctuary for worship then will be dismissed to their classes, accompanied by their teachers. Parents can pick children up after church from their classrooms. Childcare is available in the childcare room from 8:30am to 12:30pm every Sunday.

GRACE KIDS… What have they been up to? Seekers (2nd – 5th graders) have been finishing up

2 Samuel and reading through 1 Kings. Some of the highlights have been the story of 2 Samuel chapter 9 when David shows kindness to Mephiboseth. The kids enjoyed having a contest on who can pronounce that name! Their bible point was God is kind. The memory verse was 2 Corinthians 1:4, “He comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” On this particular Sunday our Seeker’s class put together kindness bags which included items like toothpaste, toothbrushes, socks, paper, pens, granola bars, water bottles and such. These bags were sent home with the kids for them to give to someone in need. The best part about this activity was having the children ask the Lord to give them a verse for their “person.” Some of the kids did this by closing their eyes and praying and then opening up their Bibles and believing that the verse that jumped out to them on that page was for that person. Some of the children had a specific verse in mind. Some wanted to write whole chapters for their “person”!!!! This was such a Kingdom moment for me. Like, YES! This is what life is about. Sharing the gospel and loving one another. These kids are getting it, and they want to be generous in their sharing and their love. A few kids made more than one bag. I am sorry I didn’t take photos that day. Another highlight from the summer has been learning about Elijah and Elisha and studying 1 Kings. On that Sunday the children made fiery chariots and had chariot races.

Family Ministry Our Cubbies Class (Kinder – 1st graders) continues to follow along in both 2 Samuel and 1 Kings. I am so grateful that our teachers in this class bring so much creativity and energy. I was in the class one morning struggling to hang up a zip line, so the ravens could bring food to our little Elijah’s, and nothing I was doing was working. In walks Ellen Bartelli with her Mary Poppin’s bag and whips out a zip line and has it hung up in no time! Not only that but then she preceded to pull all kinds of things out of her magic bag for the lesson that day, in addition to what I had already prepared!! I LOVE OUR TEACHERS!!!!!

Wednesdays@Grace Gets "Artsy" with Prophetic Art

Sonbeams Class Mural Showing the 7 Days of Creation

At the last Wednesdays@Grace the kids learned about prophetic art. I was a bit wary on this one I admit. I thought how on earth am I going to explain this to children? But you know what? I didn’t need to worry. God had it. I simply explained that one of the ways God speaks to us is through pictures and art. The kids were led in a simple listening prayer asking the Lord to bring to mind something He wanted them to know or perhaps something for someone in their family to know. Then the kids were then asked to paint what they saw. I was stunned! Isaac said he heard that the Lord wanted his mother to know He is always with her. So, he drew what he saw, a cross. Cody saw the light of Jesus over the earth, so he drew the sunrise that he saw in his mind. Ellie painted a canvas and said she felt led to give hers to Pat, that the Lord wanted Pat to have her canvas and that what she painted was really for Pat to know and interpret. The kids had so much fun with this and it just reminded me that living a supernatural life is not hard. Kids get it!

Hamburgers & Haircuts Event at Grace Of Christ

Brian Jones Speaks at Haircuts & Hamburgers Event

On August 14th we held an event here called Haircuts and Hamburgers. We had 11 local stylists and barbers come from 9-1pm and they offered free haircuts for children and students. Monte Schilperoort generously donated his time and BBQ’d over 85 burgers! Our wonderful safety team kept us safe while weathering the horrible smoke and heat. I just want to say THANK YOU to all our volunteers who made this event possible. Carolyn’s prayers, our wonderful custodians (who never once complained about my indecisiveness on set up), John Benson driving to and from Adams, Jahzeel was just amazing singing and playing her guitar on the lawn, Crystal and Emma cleaning up, I mean seriously. I was overwhelmed by the support. Thank you.

If you came to H&H you probably heard Brian Jones speak. He shared a brief but profound message with the children and at the end asked if any of them would like to accept Jesus as their Savior and if they did would they please scoot forward. ALL THE KIDS MOVED FORWARD!!! Some prayed to receive Jesus for the first time and others recommitted their hearts to Jesus. Our pastors are following up with these children. Praise the Lord. This was just an incredible thing to see and experience. Not only that, but all our barbers and stylists paused everything for this time, and I am sure we all left just a little bit changed. I am so grateful to Brian and to our local barbers and stylists!! By the way, every single one of them asked if we could do this again next year! YAY GOD!

MEET OUR TEACHERS Join me in welcoming our teachers for the 2021-22 school year!

Welcome Back Ms. Lopez!

WELCOME TO THE 2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR!

We are off to a great start. After a summer of prayer and putting our faith in God to build our program, we are full this fall! We have 20 delightful students who are learning, playing, and growing each day. We are looking forward to a very fun and successful school year! Please continue to keep our students, teachers, and families in your prayers. Fall is such a wonderful time of year for kids: the weather is changing moment by moment, the leaves are turning bright colors, and school is a safe place to explore, play and grow with friends. Fall is a great reminder for us too, that God is changing us, transforming us day by day, moment by moment. We are free – in His grace and love – to explore, play, and grow too!

GROWING UP: SOCIAL SKILLS

When kids begin school, often times it is their first experience living by a “new set of rules.” Teachers are different from mom and dad, so some children respond with an increased amount of respect to this new authority. Others… well, not so much! That’s okay though! We’re here to learn from each other and help each other out. As teachers, we spend a lot of time talking about and practicing our routines, our structure, our expectations. We validate students who tell us when something is different or hard. We encourage them to try their best and find joy in their struggle. We take advantage of their natural inclination to be helpful, obey the rules, and follow routines. We also encourage parents to ask questions about their child’s routine and rules at school. What is challenging? What is new or fun? What does it look like to follow this rule or that rule? How do you feel at school? The more parents affirm and support the challenges of being at school, the easier it is for children to adapt to two very different environments. By asking questions and being excited about new routines and activities, the more comfortable children begin to feel about transitioning from one place to another, which is a skill they will need to use their entire lives! 11

Ms. Lopez and Mrs. Miller

Crystal Lopez is back with us after a short time away from our program. She has been a familiar face in preschool, childcare, and in Children’s Ministry for over 14 years! She says “I missed this place every day. I’m so excited to be back and watch our children grow this year!” She’s also running childcare on Sunday mornings, so stop by and say hi to Ms. Lopez!

Welcome Mrs. Miller! Amber Miller is joining us from

Romp ‘n Rhythm at Gymnastics Plus. She comes highly recommended by both her previous co-workers and several parents. One mom said “Amber has an amazing way with kids. They love her, they trust her. I’m so excited you snagged her before another program did!” She has two daughters of her own and stays busy in church and the community. Welcome, Mrs. Miller!

CHAPEL NEWS

Each year we have a theme in chapel and this year it’s “The Armor of God!” We teach about a piece of the armor each month and how it equips us to love God and strengthens us to serve others. “Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” – Ephesians 6:13

SEPTEMBER: (The Belt of Truth) God’s truth is like a belt, holding all of our armor in place. Truth from God is the foundation of our faith and helps strengthen our trust in Him. Satan has told lies since the very beginning! But the Belt of Truth will help us see the truth and power of God’s love for each of us and His plan for salvation. Bible Lessons: “The Beginning: A Perfect Home” (Genesis 1-2) and “The Terrible Lie” (Genesis 3) OCTOBER: (The Shoes of Peace) Once we have the Belt of Truth, we put on our Shoes of Peace! We know that walking with Jesus is not always easy. But we have an important job to do: Tell others about God and His amazing plan for us! The Shoes of Peace allow us to walk with confidence to tell our family, friends, neighbors (even the whole world!) about the love of Jesus. Bible Lessons: “A New Beginning: Noah” (Genesis 6-9) and “The Forgiving Prince: Joseph” (Genesis 37-46)

Yetebon, Ethiopia – 2021 Update Despite the challenges brought about by COVID-19 throughout these past months, Project Mercy still has bright news to share. The following are some of the ways that Project Mercy was able to “stay the course” and continue to ease burdens, alleviate sufferings and offer hope for the future.

Hospital Sees Record Number of Births Even though in-person schooling was shut down until late fall of 2020, the hospital remained open throughout the year and served a record number of expectant mothers. Working with the Meskan Woreda Health Bureau (like a county health department in the United States), the team constructed and fully implemented the prevention plans to fight the virus. In addition to addressing procedural issues, Project Mercy’s High School and Health Science College facility acted as a quarantine site. This made a significant impact by allowing the hospital and other healthcare facilities to focus on serving non-COVID-19 suspected patients rather than compromising limited staff and resources. This also decreased fear and uncertainty and created a safe environment to seek care; thus, the record number of births.

New Water Distribution System The school’s downtime allowed for extra time and access to get the new water distribution system up and running. This system serves all of the Yetebon community with clean drinking water for some 30,000 residents via its 20 newly installed distribution sites. The abundance of clean and safe water is saving lives and is changing quality of living and health. The distribution is a collaborative effort with the citizens of the Yetebon community. 12

In 2020, Project Mercy worked to enable 20 water distribution centers to open and thus change the rural community of Yetebon. Today, babies and toddlers have access to water that their older siblings carry home after school. The children are now able to attend school without the threat of headaches, diarrhea, or stomach aches.

Mission Ministry Dairy Cattle Breeding Program Expands Moreover, the Dairy Cattle Breeding Program has launched a new partnership that has expanded Project Mercy’s reach to help the community of ChaCha. This makes it possible to increase the number of crossbred heifers that will be given to family farmers in the area and to ensure that children have milk (nutrition) and families have income.

Establishment of Poultry Farm Another way that Project Mercy has bolstered food security this past year, is by establishing a poultry farm. Starter sets of 800 one-day-old chicks and feed were distributed to recent college graduates who were struggling to find jobs due to the pandemic. The new grads were instructed upon creating a business plan and trained in poultry farming. This new business opportunity

will allow for more animal-based protein in the local diets, create economic empowerment, as well as serve as a model for other entrepreneurs in the area.

School and College Re-Open Presently, the School and College are back up and running, demonstrating great success as students are moving grade levels and are graduating to colleges and universities. This vital educational opportunity is an indispensable gift to the youth of Yetebon and to the community as a whole. Project Mercy was featured in June as a Moment for Missions during both services. Project Mercy’s mission is to transform how people live and think and build strong, self-sufficient communities in Ethiopia and beyond through new knowledge, better health, sustainable food sources and strengthened character for all people as a living example of the love of Jesus Christ.

GREAT COMMISSION FUND

Go Make Disciples – Matthew 28:19-20 Drawing upon Grace of Christ’s rich history and legacy of supporting missionaries, both locally and globally, the Great Commission Fund has been established by the Mission Ministry Team (MMT) and in partnership with Grace’s Foundation to keep this mandate forthcoming.

spur congregants on to taking a mission trip of their choice. And finally, the Great Commission Fund is to bolster other mission endeavors both in the valley and world-wide.

Develop Missionaries The primary goal of this fund is to send young believers (ages 14-25) from the Yakima Valley on a mission trip to get their “feet wet” and experience a taste of what it means to be a missionary. The applicants do not need to be from Grace of Christ. “We want to send Don Stuber people with programs that will develop missionaries,” explains Don Stuber, Chairman of the Great Commission Fund and MMT committee member. “By sending people on short term missions, the hope is that they will become long-term missionaries.”

Support Local and Global Missions Secondly, according to Stuber, the purpose of the Great Commission Fund (GCF) is to aid members from Grace of Christ to take the step of putting faith into action and 13

Garth and his wife Caroline Gustafson are missionaries with YWAM (Youth With A Mission) in Battambang, Cambodia. Garth is an example of one of Grace of Christ’s own who was raised in our church, trained as a missionary, and is now living out his faith as a global missionary. Garth received vital training and equipping through YWAM that is helping him to do his part in fulfilling the Great Commission. Now, with the inception of the Great Commission Fund, potential missionaries from our valley have one more avenue of providing financial resources to contribute to their training. Who will be the next to serve the Lord and to follow in Garth’s footprints?

Mission Ministry

Short Term Mission Trips Can Help To Grow & Encourage Long-Term Missionaries

Established in November of 2020, with the approval of church staff and support of the Foundation, the Great Commission Fund is beginning to take hold and thanks to much generosity, the first applicants are now being reviewed. “Gifts that have been given in the first nine months have allowed us to begin the process of vetting potential candidates to award with financial support,” Stuber shares.

Financial Goals The financial goal for the Great Commission Fund is to continue to grow the fund and to retain the principle, spending only the sum from the interest earned. This,

in essence, makes the Great Commission Fund a legacy fund that will continue to grow exponentially and remain in perpetuity. For you, this means that your gift will continue to multiply and make an impact long after you have reached the Promised Land. Please consider making a contribution to the Great Commission Fund. There are many ways to give such as check, gifts of stock, IRA distribution, Life Insurance, Legacy gifts, and more. For more information, please contact Don by phone, text, or email. CAMPBELL FARM

Remembering Carmanita Pimms Executive Director of The Campbell Farm It is with deep sadness that the Mission Ministry Team notes the passing on August 21 of Carmanita “Carmen” Pimms, the executive director of The Campbell Farm. Earlier this past summer, the Mission Ministry Team (MMT) of Grace of Christ was honored to have Carmen join them at a committee meeting to share about the work of The Campbell Farm. 14

Carmanita Pimms

Carmen’s infectious smile and enthusiasm for the Lord, captured the hearts of MMT. (You may remember her video interview for Moment for Missions that took place on May 16th.) She will be remembered for her servant heart and for her tireless efforts to minister to the youth, the elders and the homeless of Wapato and the surrounding communities.

Youth at Grace

YOUTH GROUP WEDNESDAYS (6TH– 12TH GRADE)

Wednesday Night Dinner | 6pm | Gym Youth Meeting & Activities | 6:45–8pm | Basement

WEDS@GRACE AND CARNIVAL NIGHT Hello Church Family! We hope you are ready and excited for fall, because we sure are! On September 15th, we began alongside everyone else during Wednesdays@ Grace. We had dinner with everyone at 6pm and then as a youth group we headed up to our respected rooms and went over with our youth how we are changing but also staying the same. After we finished with business we headed out to the south lawn where we hung out and had our own carnival night! Thank you to all the volunteers we had helping that night!

VOLUNTEER & VISION MEETING Now a quick review of our September 1st Volunteer & Vision meeting; we discussed what we are wanting to work towards with our youth in the church. We had read a book called Stick Faith: Youth Worker Edition and with the help of this book we have made a goal of 5 + 1. Five adults to 1 student. While we don’t actually want to have five adults surround a student every Wednesday. We have worked out three different ways to accomplish this. 15

Youth at Grace YOUTH LEADERS | WED NIGHTS This group of volunteers would dedicate the most amount of time. We would ask for about 10-12 hours a month. This would include two hours on Wednesday nights and a meeting once a month. Youth Leaders will be the ones who spend the most time with our kids with the goal of making lasting connections.

YOUTH MENTORS | PRAYER, COFFEE & CARDS This group of volunteers is right in the middle, a better option if you can’t commit to come on Wednesday nights. We would ask 1-3 hours a month and you would be given a list of 1-4 youth members. Youth Mentors pray over assigned youth members as much as possible. We would also love to have Youth Mentors attend any Wednesday and sit with your youth and have conversations with them. Or take them out for coffee or even send them a birthday card!

YOUTH CONNECTORS | SHARE A HOBBY Finally, but definitely not least, we have our Youth Connectors. Youth Connectors require the least amount of commitment and this group of volunteers is an exciting group! Youth Connectors give about 1-3 hours per quarter (every three months). What this group will specifically do is share a hobby (hiking, knitting, baking, painting, etc) and teach kids what you love to do. We would love to have you volunteer! If you are still interested contact us, we still need people! Email us at youth@yakimagrace.com. – Jahzeel and Amae

Women’s Ministry HARVEST SEASON & NEW BEGINNINGS

Fall is in the air! School buses are back on the roads! This season of harvest always feels a chance to start something new – maybe the excitement of new school year – even when I no longer have anyone in school – but so many things are resuming after the summer (or longer) break. What we have planned for this fall has some familiar and some completely new – we look forward to seeing everyone! For more details, you can visit the new “Women’s Ministry” table in the Garden Room.

ESTHER BIBLE STUDY

Wednesdays | 6:45pm| Lounge In September our church began offering the familiar “Wednesdays@Grace” – a time of dinner, fellowship, and group study times. Women’s Ministry is in the midst of a 10 Session Esther Study from Beth Moore. (We’ll meet through November 17, so please join us!) The Old Testament story of Esther is a profile in courage and contains many modern parallels for today’s overloaded and stressed woman. This interactive study features nine weeks of personal daily assignments and 10 weekly group discussions with video. (Workbook $15)

BREAKING BREAD & BUILDING CONNECTION Coming this Fall!

If you are familiar with the Family Bistro night, then you will notice that Breaking Bread and Building Connections will have some similar flavors. What is it? An opportunity for women to gather over a potluck meal, make new friends and connect with old friends.

receive encouragement? Do you like to eat? Then please join with the Women’s Ministry Team in Breaking Bread & Building Connection.

When? The 2nd week of each month for a lunch or dinner. How to get involved? Sign up at the Women’s Ministry Table in the Garden Room, to be a hostess or a participant. Want to host? We are looking for hostesses who are willing to open their hearts and home once each month or as you are available. Hostesses will provide a simple soup or salad entrée (for 8 or less) and be given conversation starters. There will be a meeting for hostesses prior to the start date. Questions? Email Julie Grove at jgmggrove@aol.com.

Meet Kathaleen McFarland… “Satan always hates Christian fellowship; it is his policy to keep Christians apart. Anything which can divide saints from one another he delights in.” – Charles Spurgeon

What it is not: A small group. This is not a long-term weekly commitment but simply a fun way for us to get to know each other better.

I saw a woman wearing a t-shirt last year that stopped me in my tracks. It said, “As Strong as the Woman Next to Me.” What a beautiful positive thing to say! Even now, as I write this, I get a bit choked up thinking about how blessed I have been with deep unconditional friendships with some wonderful, quirky, wise, gorgeous women whom I count as friends.

Why? Women of Grace of Christ, do you long for a deeper connection with the women in our church? Do you wish you knew more of the women that you encounter in the Garden Room after church each Sunday? Do you desire to give and

Human nature, society, media, and culture often strive to pit us against one another. We subconsciously size up to each other and ask, are we more or less: beautiful? funny? intelligent? desirable? spiritual? mature? confident? eloquent?

Women’s Ministry popular? creative? talented? Before we take a breath, the arrow moves to “less than” or “more than.” I get caught up in how I measure up. When that happens, we forget that every single woman we meet is a one-of-a-kind amazing and loved daughter of God. Each of us has been given by our heavenly Father various gifts, and a unique spirit, that can bring richness to each other’s lives. During the past 19+ months, the pandemic and the virus have thoroughly disrupted opportunities for healthy fellowship and human contact. We are out of practice... Hold on to your hats! There is good news! The time is now! Kathaleen McFarland

Grace is a church that values friendships, connections, and living life together. Please consider the various opportunities provided for you – Wednesdays@Grace Esther Bible study, Breaking Bread and our fall Women’s Retreat in Lake Chelan. See more details in this article. We hope you are inspired to jump in and get connected. God made us to share our lives and our faith with others: meaningful relationships and deep friendships.

Hospitality Ministries have over 200 volunteers from our church family who serve as Greeters, Ushers, Welcome Center Assistants, Refreshment Hosts, and work behind the scenes for baptism and new baby celebrations as well as helping to decorate the sanctuary seasonally. As we slowly restart Hospitality Ministries, we thought it would be good to give a “refresh” training for the volunteers. A Fellowship Dinner and Training took place took place in this past August. Here are some photos of our time together.

KICK-OFF SUNDAY BBQ LUNCH We celebrated our annual fall kick-off this September by gathering together for one worship service, enjoying a BBQ lunch, listening to great music, playing games and spending time with our church family.
