do not be anxious about anything instead pray about everything... Philippians 4:6-7 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.” – Psalm 46 I grew up in a house that was unstable. I'm talking here about the ground under the house. My hometown of Danville, east of San Francisco, is situated between two significant earthquake fault lines, the Calaveras and the Mount Diablo, both not far from the San Andreas. One summer there were more than 100 noticeable earthquakes. The shaking would begin, mild panic would set in, I would run outside or stand under a door frame. Items would fall off shelves and counters, crashing to the floor. When the swaying subsided, so did my fear. But the possibility, and instability, of an earthquake was always in the back of my mind. Did you know that there was an earthquake in Yakima (1.7) in early April of this year, and one in Selah (2.0) about the same time? They were so minor I doubt anyone felt them (earthquakes below a 3.0 are rarely noticed). As I reflect over my life, much was unstable. After high school I drove 800 miles away, on my own, to attend college. I was excited but things were a bit shaky... unstable. After college, I had another set of moves... unstable. Meeting Kathaleen and getting married... I was the one who was unstable. Having kids... that rocked my world. Graduate school, churches, Ghormley...each change brought with it a sense of the unknown and feelings of instability and change. As you look back over your life, I imagine you'll be able to recall moments that felt unstable.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear... Psalm 46

2

I like to be in control, have guarantees, limited variables, known outcomes, assured safety. But that's not how life is. Our time is limited. We don’t know the when or how. The time we do have is unpredictable, unstable, unknown. Interestingly, our appreciation for relationships, friendships, experiences and love increases because they are unknown, unstable and often beyond our control. There is no formula for manufacturing the things that are most meaningful. When we try to exercise that level of control, we crush our friendships, our loves and inadvertently ruin the very experiences that bring us joy and beauty. Picture yourself driving west on Highway 12, on your way to Packwood. You round a bend in the highway and catch your first glimpse of Mt. Rainier. A hummingbird surprises you at your window. Then, later in the day, you meet someone and a friendship begins. You discover that someone really loves and cares for you. The fresh beauty of God’s creation and a new friendship can be unpredictable and wonderful at the same time. Life was not intended to be mundane, routine, plain or boring. God created us and the world as good, exciting, full of adventure and beauty. While we’ve worked hard at messing up this world and our lives, God’s goodness, His ultimate plans and purposes remain. He will one day restore this world, and us, to the joy and wonder He originally intended. God’s church is unstable too. Even though we pray for calm, for routine, for the same old same old, it doesn’t stay that way for long. People come and go. Every Sunday the music and message and mix of people changes. We know we are not in control and we can be at peace when we trust that God is good and He is in control of all things. Each day brings new challenges in the lives of those around us, in our church, in our community and in this world. That requires a fresh, gracious and compassionate response from us. Loving God and Loving Others takes on new meaning with each encounter. Do we believe that God is good, that He loves us, that He holds us and all things, and that He will not abandon us? If we do, then even when things around us are unstable, even when the ground beneath us shakes and the mountains move, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear...”

We will not fear. We will trust God and enjoy the life that we share together and this church that we are a part of. When we learn to trust God, life takes on new meaning and brings with it surprises, wonder, and joy. Jesus is our stability in all times. I continue to be amazed by God and am ever thankful to be on this journey with you! – Curt

WELCOME JEANNE BREEDING! Welcome to our new parttime staff member: Jeanne Breeding, who has agreed to join us for a few hours each week so she can visit those who are in their homes, care facilities or find it difficult to get to church. Our elders and pastors believe this is of great imporJeanne Breeding tance and they appreciate Jeanne’s willingness to make these connections. If you know of someone who would benefit from a visit (maybe that’s you, a friend or a family member) please let us know by contacting Ericka Clark (Ericka@yakimagrace. com) or by calling: 509.248.7940 x107.

Three Philosophies of Life Peter Kreeft is a Boston College Professor of Philosophy and author of the excellent book, Three Philosophies of Life. “Love naturally suffers for the very obvious reason that it opens you up, exposes your tenderest, most vulnerable part, the quivering flesh of the heart, at the mercy of the beloved and of time and fate. If the beloved is human and not divine, you will always be betrayed. We always betray each other’s love, in some way. That is what original sin means. No one is totally reliable. Put divine expectations on any human shoulders, even the shoulders of a saint, and you will be bitterly disappointed.”

MEN’S BREAKFAST

SATURDAY, JUNE 11 | 7:30AM | GYM Hey guys! Mark your calendars – there will be a men’s breakfast on Saturday, June 11 at 7:30am in the church gym. A very hearty (and delicious) meal and good conversation with the guys. A great way to start the weekend. Men of all ages are welcome – bring your sons or grandsons, friend from work, and your neighbor! Please let the church office know if you want to help cook & set-up or help clean up afterwards. Be sure to attend because there will be no men’s breakfast events in July or August.

SURVEY UPDATE Thank you to all who have responded by completing and returning the Grace of Christ survey. While not perfect, it was our intention to listen to and learn from, each and every person connected with our church. Jennifer, Ericka and Debbie have devoted significant time to get the survey out and then collect the information. In our next edition of Grace Alive, we will present a summary of the responses we’ve received. At this point, two main themes are evident. It is clear that instability at the church, in particular, related to all the changes with the head of staff these past years, is a significant and ongoing concern. We get that. While offering guarantees would be foolish, we are committed to repairing broken patterns and working toward a healthier, more consistent, future with the church staff, including the pastors. And second, many have expressed a desire for increased communication, and greater transparency. We are committed to working on that too. This summer and fall, the church elders and pastors will offer opportunities for you to hear about the results of the survey, the comments shared and lessons learned.

We’ll be praying that God allows us to have another celebration in 2023! “Whatever you do [whatever your task may be], work from the soul [that is, put in your very best effort], as [something done] for the Lord and not for men.” – Colossians 3:23 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” – John 13:34-35

GOD IS BLESSING OUR CHURCH!

We are almost halfway through the year and God's blessings have not stopped; He has allowed us to keep the doors of our Church open so that anyone who wants to praise Him is welcome. Grace of Christ is a welcoming church that loves God and loves others. We want to invite you to come and participate in any of our Sunday Services.

WORD OF OUR LORD

“May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect you! May He send you help from the sanctuary and give you support from Zion! May He remember all your offerings and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices! Selah May He grant you your heart's desire and fulfill all your plans! May we shout for joy over your salvation, and in the name of our God set up our banners! May the LORD fulfill all your petitions! Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy Heaven with the saving might of His right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright. O LORD, save the king! May He answer us when we call.” – Psalm 20 HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! May you all have a great time with your children during summer vacation. May God bless your families and provide abundantly for all your needs. Working for The Kingdom of God – Pastor Alex Rule 6

Mission Ministry PROJECT MERCY RECEIVES MATCHING GRANT FROM THE JACKSON KEMPER FOUNDATION...

DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT!

If you have ever thought about making donation to Project Mercy, NOW is the time to do so, as a new opportunity has arisen. A generous donor has offered to match up to $500,000 for first-time donors and for those wanting to increase their gift to Project Mercy. This, in essence, allows you to double your donation and impact. All you need to do is make a notation (on your check or by email) that you would like your gift to be matched by the Jackson Kemper Foundation.

WHALE, WHALE, WHALE... LOOK WHAT WE HAVE FOR YOU! Kindergarten students from Project Mercy’s Medhane-Alem School in Yetebon, Ethiopia. Opened in 1996, the school serves over 1,400 students in Pre-kindergarten through primary school, and a little over 200 students attend high school. Ethiopia suffers from low levels of literacy overall, and this challenge is more prominent in rural villages. Project Mercy is one of Grace of Christ’s mission partners. Project Mercy works in rural Ethiopia to help stomp out systemic poverty. Your donation helps Project Mercy to: educate children; train midwives; offer a safe place to birth with a trained medical professional; provide hospital services; teach sustainable gardening; provide a dairy heifer as a source of milk and income; teach income earning skills; give safe water to families; and to show God’s love. It’s summertime and adventure is calling... especially if you are a camper headed to Coronet Bay to attend the Orca Encampment. Close to 50 kids from Adams Elementary, Barge-Lincoln Elementary, and surrounding areas will sojourn this June with the hope of getting a glimpse of a whale, all while discovering more about Jesus. In keeping with the theme of this TrailSeekers adventure, the participants will receive a nautical blue “cinch bag”, dressed-up with the Grace of Christ logo and the Orca Encampment whale tail. These draw-string bags that can serve as a light backpack, are the perfect size to tote small personal items along with your bible. The special bags are a gift from our congregation via the Mission Ministry Team and can be used year-round. A child typically starts in the TrailSeekers program through the Orca Encampment. When they join, not only the child, but the entire family becomes part of the program. Mission Ministry FRIENDS OF MISSIONS NOW UNDERWAY On April 27th, as part of our regular Wednesday dinners at Grace, the Mission Ministry Team (MMT) officially launched Friends of Missions – a unique way to bolster the missions and mission partners that Grace of Christ currently supports. Sporting fresh white polo shirts that were embroidered with the newly created Friends of Missions logo, (designed by Grace’s own Debbie Meyers), members of the Mission Ministry Team were on-hand to answer questions and to talk missions. In addition, there was a representative of many of our missions seated at the various dinner tables. After a prayer and introduction by Pastor Curt McFarland, MMT committee member, Donnie Ide, skillfully hosted the evening’s program. Ever the accomplished educator, and not missing an opportunity to teach – as well as entertain – Ide quickly schooled the gym-filled audience about Grace of Christ’s missions and mission partners. Pulling mints out of his pockets and tossing to those with correct answers, it didn’t take long for the group to become well-versed on missions and to chant, “twenty missions,” when prompted. The group decidedly now knows the number of missions or mission partners that Grace is presently supporting. Do you know how many? A hint: Donnie’s lesson of twenty missions! Donnie Ide Shares About Friends of Missions and Rewards Participants with Mint Candies

9

Prior to becoming a member of the Mission Ministry Team, I had NO IDEA our church was involved in so many missions locally and around the world. What a blessing to be a part of changing lives for Christ. I was so excited, I talked too long during the presentation. My hope is that the people left realizing there is a place for them in missions, be it from home or traveling to a distant land. – Donnie Ide

WHAT’S YOUR MISSION? Ide, using a PowerPoint presentation to highlight and commentate on each of the missions and partners that Grace of Christ partners with, also shared that there are many ways to become involved. He explained that while you may not be called to travel globally, you might be able to help in various ways and with simple projects that don’t require a long-term commitment. It was explained that MMT wants to “Help People Find their Mission and Passion” and to explore ways to bolster our missions and mission partners.

Even taking the time to write a letter of encouragement, or to put a specific group on your prayer list is a vital part of becoming a Friend of Missions and plays a important role supporting our 20 Mission partners. – Donnie Ide At the conclusion of the informative program, a userfriendly survey was distributed to participants to help the Mission Ministry Team understand and know what areas of interest our church family has in serving our “twenty missions.” For those of you who were not able to attend or are curious to learn more about our mission and mission partners’ needs, there are extra copies of the survey at the Welcome Center. You are invited to become a Friend of Missions!

UNEARTH YOUR DESTINY

Wednesdays | Now – June 8 | 6:45pm | Chapel Ladies, we invite you to join us on Wednesday nights for an amazing class. We started April 27th, but don’t worry, if you’re just hearing about it, you can pick up right where we are. The class is focused on the Holy Spirit and includes information, revelation, and impartation. Robin Stuber launched the class with teaching on the person and work of the Holy Spirit. But it was more than schooling, as the Holy Spirit was invited to bring the Heavenly realm to us in a special way. We saw how the Holy Spirit works

GOSPEL PRESS REUNION – WITH GOSPEL KIDS! On Sunday, May 22nd, Sonny Salsbury led worship at both services, with the help of many from Gospel Press as well as a few from a group just started this year, the Gospel Kids. Their energy was contagious, a few were dancing (we couldn’t help ourselves!) and the music was absolutely delightful! 10

through the anointings and giftings of different women and experienced the presence and ministry of the Holy Spirit. No matter if women had been in touch with the Spirit for years or this was the first time, they understood how personal and present the Spirit is, all women were encouraged and blessed. When you have a class designed around the Holy Spirit, I would expect nothing less! We have several teachers joining us this quarter to explore the giftings and anointings of the Holy Spirit. They include Kathy Bricel, Julie Grove, Carla Kupp, and Sandy Mackenzie. This class is fun, it’s fresh, and it will make you hungry for more. So come, join in the fellowship and be a part of something new at Grace. Wednesdays from 6:45 PM – 8 PM in the Chapel. Now through June 8th.

Sonny spoke from his heart, sharing God’s word from John 13.34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” If you missed this service or want to sing (I mean, see) it again – you can find it on our website YakimaGrace. com under sermon archives.

Student Ministry WHAT’S NEW?

Its summer! Time for camp and pool parties! This summer we are planning on having pool parties in place of weekly youth group. We will have a calendar with the locations and times, so keep a look out for that.

WHAT WE’VE DONE!

This spring has been filled with fun and chaos. Much of our events and our regular Wednesdays/Sundays have been pretty well attended and that is all we can ask for.

Students at Grace of Christ

SUMMER CAMPS: These are the two weeks we will be attending Camp Ghormley as a Youth Group. MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMP (entering 6th - 8th) Monday, July 18 – Saturday, July 23

But that is not all - we have also been volunteering and helping where we can as a youth group. Most recently we helped out at the Adams Teacher Appreciation Dinner as severs. We are hoping with every new youth that come and every time we volunteer, we spread the love of Christ through our actions.

HIGH SCHOOL WATER SKI CAMP (entering 9th - 12th) Sunday, July 24 – Thursday, July 28 QUICK NOTE: Water Ski Camp does also allows those entering 8th grade to attend. We will be letting those middle schoolers come with the high schoolers, if that is the camp they choose to attend. SPACE IS LIMITED & SPOTS ARE FILLING Please sign-up as soon as possible through the camp registration website and let us know which camp your child will be attending! https://www.campghormley.com/youth-camps

Students at Grace of Christ Participating on Sundays to is a fairly new thing for most of us. Noe Garcia is an usher now and for Communion Sunday in May we had Grace Johnson lead us in the Apostles Creed. We hope to make it a reoccurring thing so look out for those youth and encourage them as equals in Christ. Back to the even more fun stuff, we had a lock-in and a few nerf wars, but we have also been outside enjoying the spring weather. Quick shout out to Monte Schilperoort for planning a hike. (He´s one of our Connectors.) And there have been a few other adventures, here and there, so thank you volunteers for planning events and for being with our kids!

Family & Children’s Ministry — Sarah Huck Family & Children's Ministry Director

HELLO GRACE FAMILIES!

Recently I went away for the weekend and had some quiet, uninterrupted time with the Lord. I rented the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage at Browns Point. The cottage looks out over the lighthouse and bay. There is a small beach to walk on, and you can hear the waves from the rocking chairs on the front porch. This is a quaint, peaceful, and perfect place. I felt as though I’d stepped into a Norman Rockwell painting. Everything was as it should be. The cottage is in a state park, so right off the porch there were families having picnics (on actual plaid blankets with wicker baskets), couples holding hands walking along the paths, and kids playing catch (I didn’t know kids did that anymore!). Little girls were building a fort down by the water while their parents fished. Everyone was happy. No siblings fighting, no couples being short with one another, no child crying because they got hurt or upset. Even the girls making the fort were singing. I thought I’d literally stepped into a utopia. And to top it off, there were dolphins and seals, and one evening there were orcas! Orcas! Right in front of me. The locals say they like to come into Commencement Bay to feed. Amazing! I spent my mornings alone with the Lord looking out at the bay and enjoying this beautiful, serene environment. Then Sunday came. And of course, I was not at church. A friend of mine decided to send me a video of the Garden Room after the service. She wanted me to know that yes, Sunday School could survive without me and didn’t want me to miss out on Baptism Sunday. As I watched the video, I was reminded of a familiar scripture in Matthew. While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, His mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to Him. Someone told Him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside waiting to speak to You.” He replied to him, “Who is My mother, and where are My brothers?” Pointing to His disciples, He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers. For whoever does the will of My Father in Heaven is My brother and sister and mother.” – Matthew 12:46-50 Watching the video brought tears to my eyes. This is my family. This is our family. The church family at Grace is so special. So unique. We are blessed to have one another. If Norman Rockwell made videos, this is a taste of what they’d be like! Relationships at Grace run deep. 14

KIDZONE

KidZone classes reopened in April 2021. It has been a privilege and joy to see the ministry grow the past year and to see how relationships between kids, teachers, volunteers, and parents have been formed in a short time. But the most fun has been to watch the kids grow in their walk with Jesus – to see what’s been planted in KidZone begin to flourish. I saw one of our Seekers’ kids lay hands on and pray for one of our teachers who had an ankle injury. Praise God! We did an activity with pictures of different landscapes – beaches and oceans, snowcapped mountains, rivers and lakes, deserts, busy city streets with skyscrapers, etc. I asked the kids to choose the landscape they were most drawn to. Then, they asked Jesus, “Jesus, what do you want me to know about this picture?” I was surprised and blessed by what the kids heard, such as “Jesus said I like this picture because the sunrise is like Him, and He brings light to my life.” Amen!

KIDZONE VOLUNTEERS WELCOMED!

KidZone is full of surprises. If you would like to volunteer in KidZone, please connect with me. Or, if you prefer to volunteer in another way, such as helping with a breakfast or preparing goody bags, I could always use the help! Email me at Sarah@yakimagrace.com.

SUNDAYS WITH GRACE KIDS

GRACE KIDS… What have they been up to?

Seekers (1st - 5th Graders)

Our Seekers’ class learned what it means to be messengers of Christ. We talked about the different ways people deliver messages. Somehow this led us to pizza delivery messengers!?! “I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way before Me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to His temple; the Messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty. – Malachi 3:1

Cubbies Class (Ages 3 - Kinder)

Cubbies potted flowers to give to their moms on Mother’s Day.

This is the One about whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send My messenger ahead of You, Who will prepare Your way before You.’ – Matthew 11:10

Children's Ministry, Mother’s Day 2022 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise, “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” – Ephesians 6:1-3 15

Family & Children’s Ministry EASTER SUNDAY

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY SPRING HIGHLIGHTS

There were four stations set up, complete with actors, each depicting a scene that took place during Holy Week. Jake Kupp narrated the walk. Brooke Arkills’ message to me sums things up: Micah and Luke talked a lot about the Sunday school presentation on Easter. They were amazed at how the volunteers acted out the story. Thank you to you and your team for making Easter come alive for my kids.

Children’s Easter Holy Walk Children's Ministry, Palm Sunday 2022

PALM SUNDAY

From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise –Psalm 8 We learn in Matthew 21 that the final entry of Jesus into Jerusalem had a special meaning. Jesus rode on a donkey and solemnly entered as a humble King of peace. The people welcomed Him and laid down palm branches on the road in front of Him shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” and “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” When Jesus entered Jerusalem, a huge crowd welcomed Him, waving palm leaves and shouting “Hosanna,” because they supported Jesus and His message. When Jesus arrived at the temple, He overturned tables that the money changers used to sell doves to the poor. He accused them of turning a house of prayer into a den of robbers. He healed the blind and sick. Then the children shouted, “Hosanna to the Son Of David!” and the priests became jealous and outraged. The priests asked Jesus if He heard what the children said and Jesus answered, “yes” and asked them if they had ever read,” From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise?” 16

Starry Starry Night– an April event at Grace, was a wonderful evening. Ann Schilperoort designed a program with both classical and sacred music and was accompanied by Luke, Kayla, and Joel Kwon. The music and talent were superb. We will host another Starry Starry Night soon - stay tuned!

FRIDAY

JULY 1

PIPPINS BASEBALL LET’S PLAY BALL! | FRI, JULY 1

WEDNESDAYS @ GRACE

On Wednesday nights following dinner, kids 1st through 5th grade join us upstairs in the big KidZone room. We use icebreakers as a fun way to get interesting conversations going. Activities, games, and a Bible lesson follow. I like to let the kids decide on the order of the evening, and it’s amazing how much smoother class goes when kids are included in the planning of the night. We have been exploring the Bible and getting to know who God is through a study called Bible Seeker Lessons. The kids have enjoyed these lessons and are having fun exploring the creative ways God reveals Himself to us.

On Friday, July 1, Families@Grace are invited to go to a Pippins’ baseball game. Tickets are $12 and include a hot dog and soda. Fireworks to follow the game!

PRESCHOOL GRADUATION

On June 3, we said, “See you later, alligator!” to our friends heading into Kindergarten. It’s always a bittersweet mix of sad goodbyes and exciting send-offs. We have 12 students heading off to their new elementary schools next year. Look out world! We’re sending you some amazing kids who are ready to shine their lights for all to see!

REGISTRATION IS HAPPENING NOW!

PRE-K IS BACK!

Please share our ad with your friends, neighbors, and relatives who are looking for a preschool. We have a few spots left in all our classes. Our vision is to offer a solid Christian preschool education to prepare students for Kindergarten and beyond. We have a long tradition of excellence in downtown Yakima. Thank you for sharing the light of Christ by sharing our preschool!

You may notice that the tables in Room 217 have shrunk! We are cleaning and preparing that room to once again host our 5-Day Pre-Kindergarten classroom this fall. It’s exciting to know that we have space to grow and resources to share with more and more children each year. We know that God has big plans for Grace of Christ, so we are always listening, praying, and preparing for the families that God will bring to our school. Thank you Grace of Christ Family for your faithful prayers and support!

Hospitality & Serving at Grace

Welcoming One Another In the Name of Jesus

Sunday Refreshments

BEING A WITNESS OF JESUS

GET CONNECTED ON SUNDAYS!

Practicing Hospitality While traveling through the looked-down-upon region of Samaria, Jesus spoke to His disciples while taking a rest break by a well, “Do you not say, there are still four months and then comes the harvest? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields! They are white, ready for harvest.” Jesus had just revealed Himself as the Messiah for the first time to an immoral Samaritan woman who then ran off to tell others to ‘come and see’ the man who had told her everything about her life. In one sense, Hospitality Ministry Team’s (HMT) primary purpose on Sundays is to echo the Samaritan woman’s invitation to ‘come and see...’ by extending the Welcome of Jesus to all who enter the church. We work to lower the barriers – that is, try to remove any obstacles that may distract people from encountering the LORD or entering into worship. “...Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields! They are white, ready for harvest.” How many of us share the burden of friends and loved ones who don’t know the LORD? Do we not intercede with the LORD that these lost ones will encounter Jesus? I often wonder, of those present on Sunday morning, how many are there because someone has cried out to the LORD on their behalf? Will others go out of their way and out of their comfort zone to welcome them? Will they ask his/her name, listen, and be Jesus to them? Might they comfort the wounded or soften a hardened heart with some small act of kindness? Will newcomers be welcomed with the love of Jesus? 22

• Greeters • Refreshment Servers • Ushers • Welcome Center Workers • Help with Baptism Celebrations, Baby Dedications, and Welcoming New Covenant Partner Ready to step up? Call the church at 509-248-7940 and Jennifer will help get you connected! First and foremost, this is Christian hospitality, extending the Welcome of Jesus. The old saying treat everyone like family and family as guests is another way to express the act of showing hospitality to all, as we extend hospitality to everyone. We’re pretty good at extending hospitality to those we know. But what about those we don’t know? Are you willing to extend the love of Jesus by initiating engagement with those you don’t know? Elsewhere in the Gospels, Jesus speaks of the harvest saying, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.” – Matthew 9:38, Luke 10:2. I ask the Lord to send workers to extend the Welcome of Jesus through acts of hospitality at Grace of Christ Church. I pray for every parishioner to seek an opportunity to extend the Welcome of Jesus to at least one person they don’t know, as well those they do know each and every Sunday.

Hospitality & Serving at Grace

Student Ministry Volunteers at a Youth Group Carnival

WHERE DO YOU SERVE IN THE NAME OF JESUS? Serving at church on Sunday morning is wonderful and necessary. Together, each of us is to take a part - whether by showing hospitality, leading or facilitating worship, intercessory prayer, or discipling children, youth, and adults. We are strengthened as we worship the Lord, fellowship together, and serve one another on Sunday mornings. The Sunday morning gathering presents a model of focus for every day of our lives! It is through the daily life rhythms of worship, fellowship, and service we bear witness of the one we follow, Christ Jesus. Jesus gives us, His followers, some specific instructions. “…teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you…” – Matthew 28:19-20. His command is this - LOVE. Love the Lord our God with heart, mind, soul, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself. It is impossible to accomplish this ourselves, yet possible with the LORD. To be a Christ Follower is to yield to the life of Christ manifested in us. Through the working of the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to do good works. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10.

Teaching God’s Word in Sunday School In little and big ways, each day there is opportunity to humbly serve others as a witness of the LOVE of Christ right here in Yakima. Ask the Holy Spirit what good works have been prepared for you to do! Here are some opportunities to prayerfully consider:

ON-GOING OPPORTUNITIES • Hang-Out with Our Youth Sunday Mornings or Wednesday Evening • Grace Kids Teacher or Helper Sign-up to volunteer in Children’s Sunday School • Reader at Adams Elementary Spend an hour one to five days a week reading to or listening to a child read a book. (Call Jean Schiewe at 509-307-2795) • Spend Time as an Intercessory Prayer Partner Pray for the church and others • Transport an Elderly Parishioner to Church • Help Coordinate Volunteers Needed at Church

In James 2, the connection between faith and good works is crystal clear. If you are only giving lip service and wishful thinking for others’ well-being, then your faith is dead. As followers of Jesus, we are to serve others through sacrificial love as He modeled for us. Whether we serve individually or corporately with others, Jesus states that in serving others we serve Him. (See Matthew 25:31-46). 23
