Church. One word that brings with it mystery, power, beauty, expectation, history, appreciation, disappointment, pain. What word, or words, describe the “church” you’re a part of? If you’re reading this it’s likely that Grace of Christ / First Pres is your church. Maybe you are considering whether to make it your church or perhaps it was your church at some point in the past.

The Presbyterian Church I grew up in did a lot of things right. It was my church from age 4 to 17. Jesus was their focus. Mission their priority. The preaching was not spectacular but it was solid, good, faithful, genuine. They offered both Traditional and contemporary worship services. They cared about kids. Sunday School teachers taught me faithfully... and patiently. The Middle School and High School groups were engaging. People seemingly genuinely cared for each other.

I left that church to attend Whitworth College. It’s possible that if I had more life experience (and a dose of cynicism at that time), the cracks and flaws below the surface of my home church might have been more noticeable. But honestly, I believe it was and still is a great church. I did not then, nor do I today, have illusions of perfection when I walk into a church.

What I do expect to see is a community of faith where Jesus is the focus. Mission is a priority. Children and students matter. Preaching is thoughtful and heartfelt. People are trying, failing and trying again to genuinely care for each other.

The church of my early days in the 1960’s faced different challenges than Grace of Christ faces in 2023. Today there seems to be less understanding of Christian faith and less acknowledgment of the need for the God described in the Bible. There is less dependence on others, less belief that Truth is defined by God, and less trust in the leadership, the organization, the documents, the history and the message that the church offers.

What word, or words, describes your relationship with the “church” you are a part of?

The Church has a divine mandate and a divine origin. It was established by God Himself. The passage above, from the book of Acts 1:14-15, tells us that the entire church, after the miracle of the first Easter, consisted of 120 persons. That’s all. They were eager. They had seen Jesus alive again that first Easter.

They still did not understand, “will you at this time restore the kingdom of Israel?” Jesus told them to remain in Jerusalem and WAIT for “the promise of the Father... you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” When the Holy Spirit descended on that group of 120, thousands responded and the entire history of the world changed. It is changing still.

What words describe a “successful” church?

Success for a particular church is not measured in numbers. Churches with 1000’s attending may be far from what God intends. Success for a particular church is not measured in satisfaction surveys. Churches with the most content attendees may be far from what God intends.

A successful church WAITS for the leading of the Holy Spirit. A successful church does not focus on making those who attend comfortable. A successful church keeps its focus on, and its message on, Jesus. A successful church lives to serve those beyond its own walls. A successful church

JOY WORSHIP BEAUTY POWER ORDAINED

cares deeply about children and students. A successful church values faithful, thoughtful preaching over flash and sizzle. A successful church is a church where people are genuinely trying to care for, respect, love, and honor each other.

The church described in the book of Acts was not perfect, it didn’t expect to be. There were problems early on: discord, divisions, corruption, posturing, hypocrisy, errant teaching. Beauty, power, grace, wonder, healing, hope, forgiveness, community and life were also present. That first church of 120 waited for the Holy Spirit and then talked about Jesus, served in the name of Jesus, loved others because of Jesus, extended grace in His name and had an eternal impact on their city and world.

Here at Grace, thankful for our past, looking at the years to come, WAITING and depending on the power, presence, and leading of the Holy Spirit, and the grace of our good God, want to be His church.

“In prison, the same man beat me every day. On the first day, I felt God speak to my heart, saying, ‘Dan, I want to teach you to love your enemies.’ I remember thinking, No, not now, thank You. The reality of injustice was there, and I thought I should call the embassy. My rights were being violated. Again, I felt God’s voice saying, ‘Dan, I want to teach you to love your enemies.’ When I complained to God that I couldn’t do that, He challenged me again: ‘Dan, ask Me what I think of him [the man beating you].’ I stopped and said, ‘Okay, God, I don’t understand, but what do You think of this man?’

At that moment, the love of God filled my heart. I began to realize that God did love this man. He loved his wife. He loved his kids. Even though I was being beaten and was so angry and upset, this revelation — that God did love this man who beat me — filled my heart. I remember looking up to God, saying, ‘God, change my heart. WALKING WITH FAITH IN GOD

Grace of Christ is walking with faith in God, His Son Jesus Christ and with the help of the Holy Spirit, and His love and compassion. Remember that many have lived and passed the test that was presented to them. And now we, the church, the body of Christ, continue walking with that same faith, and power that comes only from our Father God Almighty. This faith and hope in God and in our Lord Jesus will lead us on the path that leads to eternal life, where we will live forever with Him. Just remember to fix your eyes on Jesus, and not on earthly things.

“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God. By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered Him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.” – Hebrews 11:8-12

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK

This wonderful event was celebrated during the first full week of May and it was an opportunity to show teachers they are valued, appreciated, and deserving of more support. We are glad that our church Grace of Christ was able to show gratitude and appreciation for their excellent work in educating children. Teachers have a challenging job, and it’s important to recognize their effort and dedication. I’m sure they appreciated our love and support to the school. The Appreciation Dinner for the Teachers and Staff from Adams Elementary School was wonderful; although some were unable to come due to their busy schedules, our church was able to show our gratitude for their excellent work in educating our children. We understand that the task of being a teacher is not easy, and that is why we wanted them to know how much we appreciate all the effort and dedication they put into each day of teaching.

Grace of Christ wants to thank every educator from Adams for being an amazing teacher to our children. Their dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed. They have made a positive impact on our children’s lives, and we are grateful for that.

CAMINANDO CON FE EN DIOS

SEMANA DE APRECIACION A LOS MAESTROS

Este maravilloso evento se celebra durante la primera semana completa de mayo y es una oportunidad para mostrar a los maestros que son valorados, apreciados y merecedores de más apoyo. Nos alegra que nuestra iglesia Gracia de Cristo haya podido mostrar gratitud y aprecio por su excelente trabajo en la educación de los niños. Los maestros tienen un trabajo desafiante y es importante reconocer su esfuerzo y dedicación. Estoy seguro de que ellos también apreciaron nuestro amor y apoyo a la escuela.

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER

May 4th was the National Day of Prayer. Prayer groups from churches all over the Yakima Valley walked and prayed from 11am – 1pm around downtown Yakima. Many people participated, and hundreds came to Sozo Sport complex that evening to pray and worship God. The entire event was amazing with English and Spanish live translation. We all enjoyed two hours of wonderful worship and fellowship in total unification.

We Thank God for His love and protection to our city, nation, and world, and we thank Pastor Curt, and our congregation for their constant prayers and support to this National Day of Prayer.

DÍA NACIONAL DE ORACIÓN

El 4 de mayo fue el Día Nacional de Oración; Los grupos de oración caminaron y oraron de 11 am a 1 pm por el centro de nuestra ciudad. Mucha gente participó y cientos vinieron al complejo Sozo Sport para orar y adorar a Dios. Todo este evento fue increíble con traducción en vivo en inglés y español. Todos disfrutamos durante dos horas, la maravillosa adoración y compañerismo en total unificación.

CLOTHING EXCHANGE

The clothing exchange was a great success, many individuals and families from our community arrived early to receive the love and attention of our church and volunteers, along with all the clothing and other items they needed. In the morning we welcomed them with hot coffee, sweet bread, milk and orange juice. For lunch we offered delicious burgers, nacho chips and fresh fruit. How beautiful it was to enjoy the entire event with all families and see their children playing in the playground of our church.

OUTREACH CAMP AT GHORMLEY

God wants us to share our gifts, talents, and resources with those who need it most. That is why, and thanks to the love and generosity of God and our church congregation, we are planning to give away a weekend of camping on June 16, 17, and 18 to 100 Adams Elementary students at Camp Ghormley. A Great Big THANK YOU to Linda S and Jennifer B!

Our hearts are filled with gratitude for two women who are stepping down from their jobs here at Grace. Linda Sorenson has been the volunteer Co-Chair, alongside her good friend Linda Mathews, for the Hospitality Ministry Team and Volunteer Coordinator & Scheduler for the Sunday Welcome Center for several years.

In April, after much thought and prayer, Linda and her husband Mike decided it was time for her to step away from her leadership roles at the church. We can’t express our thanks for all Linda has done strongly enough. She approaches her calling to the Lord with a joyful heart, often saying, “It is well with my soul!” even when she might have been in the midst of a struggle. Linda wove prayer into her meetings with HMT volunteers, staff, and as an elder. She seeks God’s guidance and blessing and she encourages those she serves with to do the same. Linda expressed her appreciation to the HMT volunteers and said she would be cheering them on as we all continue serving the body of Christ through Hospitality.

Please find Linda after church on Sunday or give her a call to let her know how much we appreciate her efforts all these years. She and Linda M have set a strong foundation, under the guidance of our Lord, for volunteers at our church. That said, if anyone is interested in serving on the Hospitality team, please contact the church office or with Linda Mathews. Greeters, ushers, cookie servers, and working at the Welcome Center are just a few of the ways you can be a part of a pretty dynamic team.

We also want to say farewell to our Front Office Administrative Assistant, Jennifer Brice. Jennifer has worked in the office for over 4 years as well as in our childcare before that. She has brought a fun energy to the office –greeting staff, church family, and the public with a bright smile and a contagious laugh. Jennifer has been part of our Preschool family and board, she serves on the Hospitality and Women’s ministry teams and she has been the one to say, “I’ll help with that!” for almost every event that happens around our busy church. We will miss her greatly but are happy for her next adventure. She said we will still see her on Sunday mornings!

Greetings Grace Families, Storms. We all have them, don’t we? Maybe it’s the April showers, along with the beautiful new picture Pastor Curt has in his office of Rembrandt’s The Storm of Galilee, that have me thinking of storms, Jesus, and life.

That day when evening came, He said to His disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took Him along, just as He was, in the boat. There were also other boats with Him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to Him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

He said to His disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey Him!” — Mark 4:35-41

I love this story. It’s a true story – about people like me – who sometimes forget what God has promised and who He truly is. Do you see it? Before the disciples even got on that boat, Jesus said, “Let us go over to the other side.” He told them that they would reach the other shore. But in the midst of the storm, the disciples forgot this promise spoken just hours before. We forget, too, don’t we? We can be so quick to fall into fear, doubt, and panic. We look for ways to take control of the situation. We ask others for answers, we exhaust our energy and resources, and then, in a last-ditch effort, we cry out to God to save us from the storm – from the difficult situation. This story is interesting. We know Jesus was a praying man. Every morning He talked with His Father in heaven (Mark 1:35). But when the terrified disciples woke Him, He didn’t pray. Instead, He stood up and took divine authority over the elements. The storm was in the way of God’s plan, and Jesus simply commanded it, “Quiet! Be still!”

Last fall I saw this play out in my life in a very real way. I was with Robin Stuber on the way back from Napa Valley to Sac-

ramento – at least an hour and a half drive. We had visited Robin’s brother and it was late and very dark as we headed to our hotel. On top of that, we found ourselves in the most torrential rainstorm I have ever experienced. I have driven many times over the pass in crazy rain – sometimes hydroplaning – but this was something altogether different. On the unfamiliar freeway, I completely panicked. I couldn’t see the car in front of me. I couldn’t see the fog lines. I couldn’t see anything. I was terrified.

After what seemed like hours, we took an exit, having no idea where it went. But I had to get off that freeway. We found ourselves going down a country dirt lane. It reminded me of some dark and scary forest like in Snow White. Literally no light, just huge trees looming over the road. No houses, no other cars. Just darkness and rain. I was so upset; I began to cry! But Robin? She was fine. She said, “We’re just going to speak to this storm.”

“What? That is absurd,” I thought. I was preparing to spend the night in the car rather than get back on that freeway.

Robin continued, “Sarah, remember the storm in Mark? We can speak to this storm!” I probably rolled my tear-filled eyes and said something like, “Sure. Whatever.” I was upset that she wasn’t as panicked as me and didn’t understand that we were about to die on that freeway. I don’t recall if Robin got out of the car or just sat up in a commanding way, but she spoke to the storm. And you know what? The rain stopped. No, not instantly, but after about 10 minutes you could hear it start to relent, and then no rain at all. We made our way back to the freeway and arrived safely at our hotel.

It was interesting that Robin didn’t pray for God to save us or keep us safe, although that’s what I was praying. She simply commanded the rain to stop. I had never seen nature obey someone before. Looking back, it was almost as if I was on that boat on Galilee. And I picture Jesus asking me, “Why were you so afraid? Did you forget who I am and what I can do? Where was your faith?”

Jesus did not send the disciples out into the storm without first equipping them with the faith they needed to combat it. They knew Jesus. They had seen Him do miraculous things, just as we have experienced His love and power in real ways. Robin remembered, and she picked up her tool of faith and quieted the storm.

Family & Children’s Ministry

Yes, there are storms in our lives that are caused by wrong choices, tough circumstances, etc. Just as Jonah needed to repent for his disobedience and agree to obey God before the storm stopped, there are times we are called to pray to our heavenly Father for forgiveness, wisdom, strategy, and mercy. There are other times when we simply need to take authority over circumstances or storms. God does not cause disease. He is the healer. He does not cause confusion. He is the good shepherd. I think we all need to be reminded of what we have through Jesus our Savior. All the resources of Heaven are available to us! We have authority through Jesus. We have tools the Holy Spirit has equipped us with to lead us through to the other side of any storm.

When we’re in a season of plenty or peace, let’s tuck the truths of who God is and what He can do in our memory bank. Then let’s draw on those experiences when we are in the midst of a storm and are afraid and tempted to forget that God is God. We can trust Him with our lives and believe the Words He has spoken to us. Let us live unafraid.

FAMILY @ GRACE Healing Trauma and Betrayal Conference

Family @ Grace recently hosted the Healing Trauma and Betrayal Conference. Over 90 people attended from all over Washington, Oregon, as well as some from British Columbia. Our speaker, Yvonne Martinez, a clinical trauma specialist from California, taught in a way that was not just informative, but also transformative. For me, it changed how I will help deal with the effects of trauma.

For example, someone in the audience asked Yvonne what to do if someone shares a traumatic experience with you and you are unsure about the truthfulness of the story. She said, “I believe every story. I believe every story because it costs me nothing to believe them, but if I don’t believe them, it costs them everything.” Wow.

Yvonne went on to explain that it really doesn’t matter if something happened exactly as someone tells us, because the person’s perception makes it real to them. She taught us how to go about building up strengths, rather than focusing on the trauma. Yvonne talked about many topics that day, including abuse, poly-victimization, addiction, self-harm, and the effects of betrayal. I wished we had more time!

Each conference attendee received Yvonne’s book, Trauma, Sexual Exploitation, and Addictive Self-Harm.

GRACEKIDS – Look what they’ve been up to...

Cubbies (Ages 3 – Kinder)

Our Cubbies class enjoyed using flashlights in a lesson that explained how God’s Word is a lamp for our feet and a light on our path. (Psalm 119:105)

ARK OF THE COVENANT

Our 4 and 5 year-olds learned how God was with His people as they went into the Promised Land and how He held back the water so they could cross the Jordan River. The kids practiced carrying an ark and learned that the ark was a reminder to the Israelites of God’s constant presence. God told Joshua just what to do, and Joshua obeyed Him. When the men took a step into the river, God made the water stop! Then all of God’s people crossed over onto dry ground.

Palm Sunday

In case you missed Palm Sunday, GraceKids did an amazing job celebrating Jesus’ death and resurrection through worship and song. The kids love waving those palm branches! After the first service, families were invited to join their children upstairs for breakfast. In the midst of the chatter, food, and play, Donna Oliva stopped me and encouraged me to pause and take it all in. It was a powerful moment, and I soaked up the beauty of what was happening. Families and individuals were being intentional about connecting with one another – not just sitting with their own kids, but going out of their way to take an interest in others. What a great opportunity to celebrate Jesus and our church family!

K2 and Seekers

Our K2 and Seekers classes have also been learning about how God was with His people in the Promised Land and how He is with us today. On Easter, the kids enjoyed hearing the good news about Jesus through the Easter story in their classrooms, followed by experiencing the goodness and fun of God during our outdoors Easter egg hunt. It was a blast!

HAPPY SUMMER EVERYONE!

We had a few great events this spring and boy did we have some fun! Spring quarter might have brought April showers but that didn’t stop us from having our lock-in’s! The High school lock-in was in April and the middle school lock-in was held in May. We had so much fun at those, celebrating birthdays, hiding in the dark, and watching the sunrise after staying up all night long. And both ended with some great breakfasts provided by our lovely volunteers. We also had the Nerf nights, and we are so grateful to the Merrill twins for hosting such great events.

In May we honored our graduating seniors with a brunch and recognition! This school year has just been great overall. We have had a steady growth in attendance since the beginning of the school year. We loved seeing some new faces come and familiar ones return!

As the heat approaches the pool covers come off, and do you know what that means: Pool Parties! We would also like to take this opportunity to invite the incoming 6th graders to the pool parties to get a feel for youth and get to know both the older students and the youth staff at a more easy going setting.

Oh the places you’ll go! Preschool Graduation

At the end of May we sent 16 of our Pre-K students and a handful of Preschool students off to Kindergarten! Our graduation theme this year was “Oh the place you’ll go!” because we know how bright their futures are, especially after the amazing year they’ve had here with our teachers. We have a lot of returning students, so we pray for safety and fun summer activities to help them grow and be ready for another year of learning!

Preschool Friends at Mother’s Tea 2023

Our eyes may be windows to our souls, but it’s through our actions with these invaluable tools on the ends of our arms, our hands, that the Grace of Christ Deacon Ministry physically blesses our church family.

Hands. We use them in nearly everything we do. We use them to wash dishes, write a card of encouragement, give a hug of comfort, serve communion, knock on the door of one of our home centered Grace family members, prepare a meal, serve a meal, use our phone to call and chat, lift our hands in worship, lay them on those infirmed to heal, give a warm (or in my case cold) handshake of greeting, we fold them to pray, and we lift them to praise and celebrate!

Practical & Loving Comfort

The Celebration of Life Ministry provides practical and loving comfort to families and friends who have lost someone they love dearly. Imagine during profound grief, all the decisions that must be made. Notifying loved ones, making funeral arrangements, writing the obituary, choosing a funeral home, planning the funeral... the list goes on and on. Now imagine that a team of Deacons come along side and says, let the Deacons do one little thing for you. Allow the Deacons to use their hands to host the celebration. The Deacons would count it a privilege to transform the garden room into a beautiful welcoming space for your friends and family. The Deacons will shop for the food, prepare, and serve a delicious meal. The Deacons will clean up after your guests have enjoyed a meal, shared, laughed, wept, worshiped, sang, comforted, and celebrated the life of the one you love. This is what Grace Deacons do. And they do it well. They do it to give glory to our heavenly father, to comfort and encourage those who grieve, and

to honor those who have left their earthly home and have entered their heavenly residence.

Four Days of Preparation

Hosting a Celebration of Life event takes 4 days of preparation. Roughly 20 pairs of hands come together to accomplish this to do list...

Da y 1 – Plan the Menu, Shop for the Ingredients and Secure Volunteers

Da y 2 – Prepare the Meal and Transform the Garden Room

Da y 3 – Host 20–300 Friends and Family Celebrating the Life of Their Loved One. Greet, Serve and Clean-up

Da y 4 – Washing and Ironing the Tablecloths

20 pairs of hands volunteer for a 2-hour shift resulting in over 40 hours of loving on people. If paid minimum wage it would cost the family over $600. Deacons live out the purpose of Grace of Christ – Love God and Love Others – using their hands.

Serving as a Deacon

You may be asked to consider serving as a deacon. The Deacon Ministry prays you will lift your hands and say YES! Don’t be afraid. God equips those He calls, and you will find yourself surrounded by soon to be good friends who will mentor and serve alongside of you. Be assured, you will find your hands doing soul changing eternal work that fills you with joy and gives your life a satisfying purpose.

God will not forget the work of your hands and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His people and continue to help them. (Hebrews 6:10)

May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us: establish the work of our hands for us – yes, establish the work of our hands. (Psalm 90:17)

CELEBRATION OF LIFE - The Helping Hands of the Deacon Ministry

HOME OF LOVE ORPHANAGE

God has something planned for the Home of Love Orphanage in Battambang, Cambodia! In the words spoken to our church by Vanny, the orphanage director, he shares: “Thank you for your good work and time to help us. I really appreciate your generous hearts, love and prayers for the children.”

Towards the end of March, Friends of YWAM Cambodia sent a letter to the church congregation asking for financial help to repair a dilapidated roof and other items in poor condition at the orphanage. As a group we are humbled and grateful for the generosity of this congregation and others. The reconstruction will add comfort, safety, and privacy for the children. Because of your charitable donations, plans can include updates to a bathroom to make it handicap accessible for a young girl who lives there.

Our group celebrates with all of you our partnership with the YWAM ministry in Battambang, Cambodia. This is an expansive mission field, well worth supporting. Without the help and leadership of the YWAM director Garth Gustafson and his heart for the Cambodian people, this entire venture would not have come to fruition. We thank him immensely for the communication between Vanny, the orphanage director, and our group to keep the vision alive to help these children. We are grateful to have been in this part of the world and in a place that our church has supported. At the time we did not know why we as a

group were called to serve in Cambodia. But as time and circumstances unfolded, God placed on our hearts to help the children at this orphanage. Thank you for being a part of God’s plan. Stay tuned for updates and pictures of the completed projects!

DAVIS STUDENTS GET GOOD NEWS DELIVERED

Pastor Alex Rule and a member of the Mission Ministry Team (MMT) had the pleasure of delivering two boxes of donated Bibles to Lynne Greene, Librarian at Davis High School in March. Pastor Alex had been contacted by Lynne to see if Grace of Christ might be interested in donating some Bibles for student use. Pastor Alex’s response, “How many Bibles would you like and how soon would you like them? Yes, Grace of Christ would love to supply you with Bibles!”

Two boxes of Bibles “God’s Good News” in various translations (NIV, King James, and Bilingual – English/Spanish) were delivered. Lynne was very happy to receive the Bibles and expressed her gratitude for the delivery. She was especially pleased when she found the English/Spanish translation.

Lynne asked if the team would be okay, if the Bibles were given away to students. The team’s response, “A resounding YES! Give them to the students.”

One of the donated Bibles had the owner’s name embossed in gold on the front cover. When asked, the son who had donated it said, “This was my Mother’s Bible, she wouldn’t want it to be stored away in memory of her. Mom would love to know that it was being used by someone, especially a young person, who might not know this Jesus whom Mom loved. This would make Mom very happy!”

As the team that delivered the Bibles found out, God is mightily at work on the Davis campus. Lynne and three other individuals (two other staff members and a local citizen) meet every Tuesday morning and walk around the entire Davis campus praying for the staff and students.

Lynne further explained that the Davis library is one of the largest school libraries in the state (based on the number of books). The MMT was given a brief tour of the administrative offices at Davis and introduced to various counselors and key individuals.

Grace of Christ has been praying for an opportunity to develop a relationship with Davis High School similar to that of Adams Elementary. This is a first step in developing that relationship with Davis which is only a block away from our church. AMEN and HALLELUJAH!

Your Assignment is to PRAY for the staff and students at Davis High School specifically, and staff and students at schools in general. It is an extremely difficult time to be on staff at a school and it has never been more challenging to be a student.

LIFE CHANGING - LOVE IN THE NAME OF CHRIST

From $76,000 in debt to just $7,000 in one year! Lives are being changed every Tuesday night by the team of staff and dedicated volunteers at LOVE IN THE NAME OF CHRIST. Meeting at the Central Assembly of God church in Yakima, the staff and volunteers of LOVE IN THE NAME OF CHRIST, with GOD’s love, encouragement, and help are moving people from unsustainable lives to living the abundant life God has called us to.

In April, the Mission Ministr y Team sponsored a tour of LOVE IN THE NAME OF CHRIST (a mission supported by our congregation). Terry, a client of LOVE IN THE NAME OF CHRIST shared how he with the help of classes at LOVE IN THE NAME OF CHRIST had gone from $76,000 in debt to just $7,000 in debt. Our tour of four members from the congregation heard from Larena Mills the Emerge Ministries Director at LOVE IN THE NAME OF CHRIST about their many programs. She explained the four main program areas:

Campbell Farm Summer Program

A DESIRE TO COME TOGETHER Seeking A Deeper Relationship With God

I didn’t start out doing Women’s ministry. My first call as a young college student was to adolescents with all their energy and drama. But as time went on and I began to have a family of my own, my time and focus changed. Seeing lots of young moms just like me desiring to come together and seek a deeper relationship with God challenged me in a whole new way. I didn’t really appreciate working with women at first! But what started as a reluctant “maybe” has become a resounding “Yes!”

Women are fun to explore God’s word with for several reasons.

We love to talk! We love to dig deep! We are the perfect audience for Jesus’ word “ask, seek, knock...”

Most recently, the women of Grace are just finishing up a four-week class called “Spiritual Conversations.”

In this class we looked at four names of God found in the Old Testament and paired them with our questions about life. Questions about common emotions like anger and sadness and loneliness were linked to God’s character of Healer and Provider and The One who sees me. We were encouraged to count on God even in the direst circumstances. Many who attended have been the forerunners in this journey and added wisdom gained through hard experience. But we talked and laughed and prayed and came away knowing ourselves better and knowing God better. Hopefully in the future we can do this again, as life never falls short with questions.

Grace Collegiate Internship

GRACE COLLEGIATE INTERNSHIP

Greetings treasured family in Christ. For anyone who missed the introduction of our Grace Collegiate Internship set to launch this Fall, I’m excited to share that vision again with you here. A group of leaders have been meeting with me on behalf of Student Ministries since Fall of 2022, and they have been praying and working tirelessly to create a program for “20 somethings” to have a purpose and community here at Grace. They have written a very comprehensive outline of our values, goals and agenda, but I think their Vision and Mission statements sum it up pretty well:

GRACE COLLEGIATE INTERNSHIP THE VISION

Equip young adults to further God’s Kingdom in Yakima and to the ends of the earth.

GRACE COLLEGIATE INTERNSHIP THE MISSION

Provide young adults, in a missional community, the opportunity to pursue the following:

1) Earn a college degree

2) Deepen their spiritual growth in Christ

3) Develop career skills that will strengthen and expand the Church.

To accomplish this, Grace has partnered with Northwest University (NU) in Kirkland. This institution offers a remote learning experience called a “Northwest Partnership Program” (NPP). The NPP is a partnership between NU and the local church. NU offers a variety of fully accredited remote degree programs along with full support for tutoring, advising and other essential academic tools. We, the local church, provide an internship program that allows students to put their learning to practical use as they grow in ministry skills. The degree opportunities are varied, ranging from psychology and business to organizational management and ministry leadership. But regardless of the vocation, the assumption is the same: that students who apply would be Christ followers, desiring to glorify God and establish His Kingdom through their vocation.

Which brings us to the Grace Collegiate Internship element: An incredible opportunity for Grace Student Ministries to nurture and grow young people as they pursue the destinies

and desires that God has planted in their hearts. As these college students explore where they belong in the bigger picture of Kingdom building, they will rotate through several ministry areas with Grace, giving them a chance to discover and hone their personal calling. All the while, they will be partnered with a Grace of Christ mentor to provide support and encouragement, they will be meeting in a small group chapel time to grow in Christ together as a cohort, they will attend life skills classes as well as spiritual development classes, and they will serve on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings to widen the stakes of our Youth Group and Breakfast Club for the growing family of God’s young people here at Grace.

The Grace Collegiate Internship and You

We are pursuing applicants and a director for GCI as well as the funding needed for this pursuit. We ask that you would pray, with a deep trust in God’s goodness and His supernatural ability for the following needs:

• One Astute GCI Director

• Four quality applicants

• $95,000 to cover the first two years of the program

Our God owns the cattle on a thousand hills, and I am confident that He will be quick to answer the prayers of fervent hearts who turn their faces to Him and join their hearts desire to His in His affection for providing support and stability for His precious kids who long to pursue Him in a viciously opposing culture. Please take a minute to seek God and to ask Him to fight for us (2 Chronicles 20:15-17). Then take another second and consider making an offering to the Lord on behalf of Grace Collegiate Internship. We are looking for several $1,000 and several $10,000 pledges. I fervently believe that offerings given to the glory of God will be paid back to you 100–fold in higher forms of blessing. I trust that The Lord will repay your generosity in even greater abundance than you have given to us. Pray Fervently. Give Freely. Thank you for your untiring service to our God.
