President’s Message Jackson Koontz, III, FSA, FED 2015
Lights… Camera… Action Jackson WOW, what a privilege to be your FPP President this year! I know that with your support we can make this a great year. Your support so far has brought about a lot of changes this past year, a lot of good and exciting changes… and this is just the beginning! We rebranded the convention to “FOCUS” and gave it a shorter format, revamped the Awards Ceremony and Wrap-up Party while still bringing in some great speakers. This year we will continue to bring changes to help enhance your FOCUS experience…one is a new hotel location! This next year, we will be at the Florida Hotel, connected to the Florida Mall. That’s right, many more choices for your meal time if you like, a large number of shopping locations, and YES, the M&M Store!
that mean less teaching time? NO! The days are a little fuller, but we listened to our members and gave it to you! Florida School this year will be June 7-10 at Daytona State College so register today! The FPP Board values the membership! We want to hear from you!! Even more so, we want to see you! If you have any thoughts, questions, would like to serve on a committee (other than FOCUS or School) then let us know. I WANT to see more member involvement this year and would love to call on you to help with a committee/action team to help with the many ideas, changes, and benefit adding measures we are working on for you! If you are interested, PLEASE email me to this address (actionjacksonpro@gmail.com) and let me know you are willing to help out, throw ideas in my direction, tell me what you hate, tell me what you love, tell me a new way, or just simply say “hi”. Trade Show… the recap
Speaking of the Florida Hotel, you have a GREAT opportunity to not only check out the hotel but to spend a day with a great speaker. November 2nd is our Fall Seminar with Steve Kosak and we are hosting the seminar at our new hotel…the Florida Hotel!
A special THANK YOU to all our vendors who participated at this year’s Trade Show, your continued support is invaluable!
This is almost like creating a great image for a client AND winning top honors with the same image in competition! (I saved the birds from the same rock, poor little things) so do not forget to register for the Fall Seminar.
This past year, the Trade Show was faced with great changes. For one, we saw long time Trade Show Manager Luis Melindi retire from 35 years of service to the FPP…thank you Luis for your time and dedication!
Then speaking of not forgetting to register (and another something new) – FLORIDA SCHOOL! Looks like a great line-up of instructors this year AND this year we shortened the format from 5-days down to 4-days. NOW you can come to Florida School and not miss as much time out of your studio. BUT, will
With the format change to convention/FOCUS, the Trade Show started a day earlier than usual making it a weekend event, and we enjoyed a little food and social time inside! Special thanks to Melissa Sewell for her continued

FOCUS 2014...
Debbie Alcorn, FSA, FED Past President, Convention Manager
Time flies by so fast. We are finished with FOCUS 2014 and now working on FOCUS 2015. I want to take this time to thank everyone who made FOCUS 2014 happen. My two lieutenents: Britney Kirby-Fullgraf, Speaker Support and Cindy Strickland, Convention Committees, and my Convention Assistant Bridget Robertson, Program Designer and Facebook Poster. Speaking of Facebook, we have a great FOCUS Facebook page and web site thanks to Gary Hughes. Thank you Gary. We are grateful to all involved. A big “thank you” also goes out to all Committeee Chairpeople and their committee workers--without them we would not have a convention! Get involved, join a committe and I promise you, you will never regret it. This is a way to get the total best
out of your convention. You will make new friends and colleagues like you’ve never known.
me in my decisions for the FOCUS line-up this year. You all having my back is huge. Thankyou.
I am looking for two new lieutenents as these two girls have done it for two years each and though I thank them from the bottom of my heart they have done their share and it is time to let two other people have the fun.
Thank you to our Executive Director for pushing me to do my best to get us the best speakers for the best investment in our professional development--Kaye you are awesome. I have learned so much form you and will use it it the future.
Please, if you are interested or just want to know what is involved please call me and we can chat about it. I can be reached at 727481-9329 most anytime. It is a very rewarding experience and a lot of fun to do. Thank you, also, goes to all our Speakers for giving of their time and knowledge. We love and appreciate all you have done for us. The sharing of knowledge is what we are all about.
I personally had a great time at FOCUS 2014 and trully hope you did too. Tell your friends if you did and get them to join in with us for good learning and a good time. Now I am asking for input: tell me what and who you want for 2015. I am ready to get it going!
Thank you to all our sponsors, whose financial help lets the FPP put on one heck of a show.
I am hoping to see you all at the Seminar on November 2, 2014 in Orlando at the Florida Hotal and Conference Center, ( our new FOCUS site for 2015) to see Steve Kozak put us on “The Road to Sucess”.
I also want to take this time to thank the FPP Board for backing
Thank you, Debbie
Mentors, Silent Auction Betty McDonald, Cr.Photog., FDAE, FSA, FED
I am so proud to have been a part of this year’s Silent Auction to acquire funds so that we can continue to give Scholarships to Florida School of Photography. Our booth in the Trade Show was large enough to allow us to display our Mentor Bid Boards and our Auction Items. A few words about our Mentors....they are some of our FPP Family who give so generously of their time and knowledge. They receive none of the money collected from the bids to spend a day with them. All of the money goes into the FPP Scholarship Fund. Our thanks go out to this years Mentors: Kevin Newsome, John Woodward, Bruce Evensen, Pepito Valdes, Michael Potthast, Greg and Lesa Daniel, Rob Morman, Cindy Strickland, Christine Reynolds Marty Grivcheck, Britney Fulgraf, Carol Walker, Cathy Nocera, Tim Kelly, Randy Van Duinen, Jane Conner-ziser, Susan Torregrosa, Gary Hughes, Karen Barnett, Kevin Floyd and Bruce Wilson. The Venders and Sponsors who donate items for the Silent Auction add greatly to the amount of funds we raise for our Scholarship Fund. Thank you so much for your continued generosity. Thanks to all of our bidders. All bidders can't have the winning bids, but thru the generosity of your bids we can continue our scholarship program each year. This year we added a table in the Flea Market and some of our members were kind enough to donate items for this table; all proceeds went to the Scholarship Fund. And on one last note--Larry Carpenter, you are great. I made one small remark at the Awards and you heard. Thanks so much. You put us over the amount I had set for our goal this year. In closing, my sincere thanks for allowing me to help bring Mentors, Venders, and Bidders together in an effort to enable us to continue giving deserving FPP members Scholarships to Florida School of Photography.
Simplify for Success In Your Professional Life
an excerpt from one of Tim Kelly’s articles...
I’ve said it before, and it bears repeating. Our lives today are busier than ever, and I LOVE being busy, but there are a few areas I’ve been particularly successful in.
Don’t you want to set an example for your clients? Why use low grade, trendy backgrounds that will not serve you well into the future?
StudioProps are just an example; in many photographers’ lives can be a crutch or just a plain addiction. I realize that I am a minimalist and others have styles that have need of more tools than I, but I am challenging you to look at your own situation and see if you really need another knit cap, printed background or … well … you name it. Fill in the blank.
Equipment from China or plastic frames?
Let me clarify; I am not dissing our broad array of wonderful providers – I’m glad they are there for us. But, I’ve been in some studios, and particularly camera rooms that looked ready for an episode of “Hoarders”, in some cases holding on to things that they will likely never use again with many in poor condition that won’t impress a client anyway. You may not be guilty of any thing like this, but we all know it to be true, and I want us all to remain aware of the industry’s propensity to “collect”, and be wary of the “prop crutch”. As with many areas of life, quality is ultimately a better investment than quantity.
I just think you are going to set up a situation that sets you up for “under-appreciation”. Fewer, nicer things are usually better. Who do you ultimately want to attract? Who will purchase a premium (and profitable) product from you, or use top quality framing on your work, if you don’t? Now, you needn’t feel like you must change everything at once … but can’t you start upgrading? We all pretty much use fine quality cameras, but after that many of us part ways. I can only share my point of view, but I’ve found that it does line up with other successful photography businesses and even examples in other industries. I’d rather be considered “timeless” than “old school”, so I’m careful about appearance of freshness in my work and studio. I, however, have been using many of my same backgrounds, lights and posing chairs for decades. Yes, decades. Quality – remember that. You can do the same by slowly
choosing to acquire things that can be used well into the future of your business. Odds are, when you look at one of my (new) images, it was made with ingredients chosen and paid for thousands of images ago. On this topic, “How Tim Kelly Uses Chairs” is actually a lengthy chapter I’ve been working on and will share in the near future. But for now, here are a few images, shot on film, from a recent session. It is my hope that all in our FPP family find success in their businesses and personal lives by making thoughtful choices and finding simplicity again.
BIOgraphy Tim Kelly has worked in nearly every specialty of the industry. Before soloing as a portrait only artist, there were decades of weddings, large commercial and illustrative assignments augmenting his very successful portrait work. In addition, Kelly has always owned a lab - processing, printing and finishing his own work in house with a full time staff. Known for his meticulously crafted, gallery grade portraiture, Tim
takes great pleasure in producing classic imagery in the finest tradition and techniques, and produces all signature bearing prints himself, assuring their collectable value. Forty plus years in full-time professional photography, he’s been a teacher and mentor to portrait photographers for more than a generation, Tim does commissioned portrait work, has an agent on the east coast and a rep on the west coast but also has a new Gallery & Studio location to continue serving his central Florida clients. Honors Master of Photography, Photographic Craftsman, IE, Fellow of the American Society of Photographers,
PPA Affiliate Juror, Inducted: Cameracraftsmen of America, Inducted: International Society of Portrait Artists, Recipient of multiple Florida Degrees, National Award, Seppa Award, and twenty-five years as a Kodak Mentor. He has received the Kodak Gallery Elite Award an unmatched three times, dozens of Gallery Awards, Multiple Epcot Awards, countless print awards and is a two-time recipient of the "Becker Award", Florida's highest Imaging honor. Winning is not ancient history either - he's taken top portrait honors since the early 1980‘s and continues still, right up to and including 2014.

Cindy Strickland
Richard "Dick" Phillips, an FPP member for more than 60 years, died September 22nd. After serving in the Eighth Air Force in World War II he attended Rochester Institute of Technology where he earned a degree in Color Photography and met the woman who would be his wife of 62 years, Pat. He opened his studio in 1949 In Lakeland and soon joined the Florida Photographers Association (which later would become the FPP). He served as Chairman of many committees including Convention as well as board member and in all the officer positions, was President in 1956 and held the FSA Degree.
Another successful FOCUS, with thanks to all those who volunteered. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Convention Manager, Debbie Alcorn, I would like to thank those who participated in making this year's FOCUS happen. So many of you volunteered your time and without you we couldn't have had such a successful event. Thank you for your time and energy. Specifically, I wanted to thank those who served as Committee Chairmen in my areas. We had a fun group who were full of energy and enthusiasm. Their commitment and dedication to the purpose of FPP are strong, and we appreciate your continued efforts in your area. Thank you, thank you!
He was a PPA Master of Photography degree holder and served as a PPA Councilor. A Co-founder of the PPGMF (Lakeland) section, he served multiple times as President of that group. He was awarded life membership in PPA, FPP and PPGMF.

He is the father of 1990 FPP President and current PPA Councilor Robin Phillips. After retiring in 1992 he used the rest of his life spending as much time as possible with his seven grandchildren, and never lost his love of photography.
In looking forward to FOCUS 2015, please consider your areas of strength, and how you can use them to support this powerful event.
A Memorial Service will be held the afternoon of October 4th at 2:00 at St. David's Episcopal Church, 145 East Edgewood Drive, Lakeland.
Speak to those who have served, and you will find that limited time from many people can make a seamless event that provides education that will raise the level of photography in Florida.
Are You Doing It Wrong? Victoria Kelly, Cr. Photog., CPP
There comes a time in every seasoned professional’s life when the realization hits that she has been doing something wrong. Yes, I admit it. I had an “aha” moment this spring and I’m going to share with you how I corrected it. I took over photographing the debutantes in my metropolitan area about 5 years ago. Each year, a large photography group from California would come into the area, set up in the local country club and photograph all the girls in their gowns for the “program” picture. Each session lasted maybe 10 minutes and the mothers and daughters would get together and select the image that would be printed in the program. Not wanting to rock the boat until I got the lay of the land, the first year I did exactly the same thing…set up in the local country club, photographed all the girls with a 10 minute session, put the images online and then the mother and her daughter would select the image they wanted printed in the program. The second year I scheduled each girl individually…I still called it the “program” session but the girls came into the studio based on when their gown was ready and when the appointment could fit into their schedule. Again, the third and fourth years I followed the same routine: schedule the girls individually, call it the “program” session, post the images online… you get the idea. If you’ve been paying attention while reading you’ve already picked up on what I was doing
wrong. THIS YEAR it dawned on me that the reason I was getting NO SALES from these sessions was because of how I presented it. I was calling it the “program” session and attaching no special significance to it. And I was posting the images online! And so I decided that THIS YEAR would be different. Here’s what I did: I immediately started referring to it as the “formal debutante portrait session” and let the mothers know that this session was all about their daughters and the beauty of the gowns. I also shared with them that this would be a special time between mother and daughter to reflect on the journey that had been and the adventures that would be coming when they started college. I told them they would be in the studio forty-five minutes to one hour and that I would be creating full length, ¾ length and closeup images. And that they had to schedule an appointment to come back into the studio to view the images I had created. It just sounds so simple, doesn’t it? And yet it took me four years to “get it”. But…guess what happened? Each mother that has come in to preview images has purchased a wall portrait. And a debutante album. And the slide shows that I’m creating after attending each party as part of their “debutante collection”. So…think about it. Are you missing out on sales because of YOUR perspective? Now might be a good time to review how you’re presenting your product offerings and increase your bottom line.

FOCUS...Print Competition!
Robin Adams, Print Competition Manager.
The FPP 2014 Print Competition was a roaring success with a high number of entries, a nice percentage of merits and one of the best Print Critiques we’ve had in years. I am hoping you were able to stop into The Lounge for a bit and see print judging in a different way. Thank you to Carol Walker for making The Lounge a high energy, educational experience for our members. Perhaps you learned so much you’ll enter next year? Thank you to Jackson Koontz for the new format for the Awards Show and After Party – what a great evening! A big thank you to our 2014 judges and moderators! They were thoughtful, fair and did a stellar job for the FPP. After two days of judging, nearly all the judges spent yet more time and volunteered their time to Print Critique. It was one of the most educational print critiques we’ve ever had and I can’t say enough about how valuable (and entertaining) their advice.
