Convention ReBrand Gary Hughes, M.Photog Cr. CPP FPP Board of Directors, 2013

Younger people, 35 and under, are not joiners. We are the generations of the internet. So the FPP has been around for more than 80 years. Did you know that? It has a rich and proud history that has carried its members through many recessions, wars and changes in the industry and I, for one, am proud to be a member. Over the last decade or so the industry has undergone some pretty dramatic changes and as such, the FPP has had to make some changes of their own. One of the big changes coming this year is with convention. Not only are we switching from a 5 day convention to a 3 day convention in order to facilitate our member’s busy schedules, but we are changing the format and most importantly, the name of our convention. Funnily enough, as long as I can remember we have just called it “convention” and for us members that was good enough. Times, however, have changed and in order to keep our convention and our organization a relevant force in the photographic industry we are rebranding our entire convention. A new name, a new look and a new plan.

As you might already know, photography associations all over the country have seen a rapid decline in membership and participation. The cause is a bunch of contributing factors combining a tough recession that hurt everybody, a shift in the photographic medium to digital, the ease of access to equipment and software, and the list goes on. To be sure those things matter, but the real cause is deeper. The problem is one of generations, not of economics. Let me tell you what I mean. Go to any other association you can think of--The Rotary Club, The Moose, The Elks, Kiwanis, heck, even Chambers of Commerce and you will see the symptoms of the same illness: associations have grown out of touch with newer generations. Younger people, 35 and under, are not joiners. We are the generations of the internet. From childhood we could communicate instantly and effortlessly with everyone we know and find out anything we need to know online, including how to take better pictures. Now just because associations aren’t popular with the under 35 crowd doesn’t mean that these up and

comers can’t benefit from them the way many of us have throughout our careers--the problem we face is to show them the value of what is that we do. If we can do this, we can not only survive in this modern era, but flourish. In order to accomplish this we have to do a few things. First of all we need to get with the program and spruce up our image and that’s what this convention rebrand is all about: creating an image on the outside that reflects the value that we have inside the association.

be much of a challenge if we open up our doors and our minds to the possibilities. Much like our parent organization, PPA, we want to move our convention to be an event that will be open to anyone who wants to come and learn. By doing so we will swell our ranks and enable ourselves to grow. I dare to hope that in another 80 years the FPP will still be here supporting professionals in their desire to meet their artistic and business goals

Convention is our most powerful asset when attracting people to the FPP because we get the chance to show prospective members what we are like at our best and to make them part of our FPP family.

It is in the spirit of openness and with much excitement that I present to you, Focus. The convention of the Florida Professional Photographers.

The reality is though that although many new members will come, many will not. We have to be okay with that and learn how to function by making our convention an attendance-based business model rather than a membership only event.

On behalf of the Board of Directors I want to invite you to what is going to be the most exciting time in the history of the FPP. It’s time for us to move forward into our future and it’s time for all those photographers out there to find out who we are.

In order to grow we need our convention to be bigger and better than ever. Since there are more photographers than ever in the industry it shouldn’t

We are the FPP and we aren’t going anywhere. Visit the new website at www.areyouinfocus.com

The Lounge at FOCUS 2014 Proofcast will be setting up The Lounge again this year downstairs just outside the Trade Show. The Lounge will be a gathering place where you can watch print competition via a live feed. You can watch images come up, hear the judges discuss the print and see the final score. Competitors and non-competitors are welcome to hang out in the Lounge and questions are encouraged. If you experienced the Lounge in 2013, you know that there weren’t too many rules. . . . noise is allowed, applause is encouraged and cheering, groaning or sounds of indignation are tolerated. The Lounge is a place where you can ask questions and talk freely as the print is being judged. Check the schedule when you arrive for hours. Carol Walker and Gary Hughes will again host the Lounge. Carol and Gary have many years of experience in competition and they have each mentored and spoken to photographers about making beautiful images for competition. The Lounge – a place to win prizes, laugh, learn about competing and hang out with your friends.

Committees Debbie Alcorn, FSA,FED,PP,CM Convention Manager

If you have ever been to an FPP Event before I am sure you have seen people running around, very busy, with a purpose. You’ve been greeted and welcomed, the AV worked during the programs, you received help in direction when you needed it and the list goes on. Those people are not just there by accident, they are volunteers, working to help the FPP be a better organization and to help all attendees have a great time. Why do they do it? There are many reasons: each committee worker receives a Service Merit that goes towards earning their FSA (Florida Service Award), they get to “give back” to an association that has given much to them, they get recognition for their hard work and dedication but mostly because it’s really fun. It is the best way to totally immerse yourself in the FOCUS event, you meet tons of new photographers and make oodles of new friends. What could be better? It’s a win-win. To be a part of this fun and loving bunch get in touch with one of the Committee Chairs or one of the two hard working FOCUS Lieutenants: Secretary/Treasurer Cindy Strickland at cindy@amomentcaptured.com or Director Britney Kirby Fullgraf at info@belvederstudio.com or any of the Chair People listed below. FPP Print Competition: 2014 Robin Adams, Competition Manager

FPP Print Competition Entry Deadline - August 7th, 2014! It’s less than two months now until the FPP 2014 Print Competition deadline. Buzz is building for FOCUS and Print Competition. The Lounge is returning this year and a new awards show that promises to deliver some great rewards to our competitors. So let’s review the dates, the rules, and things you need to know for 2014. First, you must be an FPP member to compete. If you’re not absolutely certain that you are a current member, please contact our Executive Director, Kaye Newsome via email to confirm at kaye@fpponline.org Second, review the rules on line on the new FOCUS website: http://www.areyouinfocus.com/ image-competition/rules/ Third, be sure you know the important dates and deadlines: 8 PM on Friday, August 1st You must enter all images online, whether you are competing digitally or with prints. 8 PM on Thursday, August 7th Late entries will be accepted again this year with a higher entry fee.

Robin Adams, Competition Manager, cont’d... Note that dues must be paid before entering and the entry fees must be paid on line. Jeff Burton of ProofCast is hosting the website again this year and will handle all entries. As the same as all the years previous, that does not mean you can’t compete with prints but you must still enter digital files for our record keeping purposes. Prints may be entered into any category except albums. The entry portal is open now! Here’s the entry site: http://printcompetition.com You will need to register as a new user the first time, or log in as a user if you entered Print Competition last year. You must use the email address in the FPP database. You will receive a password immediately so you can access the site and update your information, then you can change your password to something you can remember. You will have much less stress if you go ahead and register as a new user now. That way you’re in the system and ready to rock and roll by August 1st. If you have any issues whatsoever logging in or you get a message that your dues aren’t up to date, there’s time to get it straightened out.

5 PM on Wednesday, August 6th If you want to enter prints to be judged or to hang as display prints, no problem. There are two ways to get them to us: You can ship them or hand-deliver them to Reedy Photo in St. Petersburg no later than 5 PM on August 6th - Debbie Alcorn will be bringing them to FOCUS; or 8 AM on Saturday, August 9th All hand-delivered cases are due no later than 8 am on Saturday the 9th in the Salon Room at the Orlando Rosen Plaza Convention site. 8:30 AM on Saturday, August 9th Day one of judging begins. 8:30 AM on Sunday, August 10th Day two of judging begins. Updates and important revisions to the Rules: Images Files: New this year, all image files must be sized so the maximum dimension in any direction is 4,000 pixels including presentation mats (to mirror PPA’s size requirements). Please review the Rules carefully for print sizes, color profiles and digital file sizes. File Naming: File names for images is really easy. . . . enter your name when registering your print, the title of your image, and that’s it! This is true for Photographic entries, EI entries and albums. Albums: Digital albums are uploaded as a single zip file into the ProofCast system. You will name the zip file the album name. Each page of the album should be named with a two digit number, i.e. 01.jpg, 02.jpg and so on. Remember, physical albums may NOT be entered.

Robin Adams, Competition Manager, cont’d... Here’s a quick checklist for you: • Confirm your membership in FPP by logging in: www.fpponline.org • Review the rules on the FOCUS website: http://www.areyouinfocus.com/image-competition/rules/ • Title your images! This is a great excuse to get together with friends and brainstorm. • Select the correct categories for your entries. Please also keep in mind that the category you enter your print is where it will stay. The Print Competition Manager, Judges and Moderators cannot and will not move your entries for you. The category you choose is where it needs to be best suited for the highest score. • Preregister on ProofCast’s website before August 1st: www.printcompetition.com and update your profile (cell phone number is super important this year – we’ll be texting you all sorts of news and updates) designate your memberships and affiliations, etc. • Double check your print sizes, color profiles, and quality before entering your images on the website. Once your images have been uploaded, you cannot change your submissions. • Print your labels from the website and affix them to the back of your prints if you are submitting prints for judging or display only prints. A Review of Electronic Imaging (same as 2013, but worth a quick review): All digital manipulation must have been done by the maker in the EI category. Please do not enter this category if any of the work has been out-sourced in any way. To compete in this category, the maker is being judged on digital manipulation. Also please remember that any entry in EI that was produced from an existing image done by someone other than the maker must be accompanied by written permission from the original creator of that image. There is an exception to this for entries in the Restoration categories, as it may be impossible to obtain that permission. And remember for Electronic Art Category, the final image is not required to appear photographic in its final form, but the final image must be based on photographic originals that are clearly recognizable in the final entry. The Lounge is back in 2014! One of our most sparkling successes of 2013 was a lounge area where print competition could be experienced in a completely different way. Print Competition is still open to all FPP members upstairs, but if you want to relax a little and ask questions, the Lounge is the place to be. Please see the other article in this magazine for the location and details. The FLORIDA Awards. And finally, to top it all off. . . . new this year to celebrate FOCUS, a new and exciting awards show where you can show off all your hard work. The FLORIDA Awards promises to have more energy, more dazzle and more awards than ever before. Good luck to all competitors! I look forward to seeing your beautiful work, to seeing old friends and making new ones. This will be a great year in Print Competition!

Another Memorable Year

Marybeth Jackson Hamberger, M.Photog., Cr. CPP, FDPE, FSA

Our 22nd year of Florida School was a memorable year for all our attendees! We have invited some of the best and brightest instructors in our industry each year, and this year was no different. On behalf of the Florida Professional Photographers and the Daytona State College attendees; our heartfelt thanks go out to each one of them! Suzette Allen and Jon Yoshinaga Bert Behnke Greg and Lesa Daniel/William Branson III Kay Eskridge Britney Kirby Fullgraf Hanson Fong Richard Sturdevant I also wish to personally thank Daytona State College, Dave Miller, Dan Bifirie and all the staff at the college for their graciousness each year. We are extremely fortunate to be able to hold our courses each year at such a wonderful venue. And Florida School wouldn’t be run so smoothly and seamlessly if I didn’t acknowledge all the class assistants, committee workers that are behind the scenes getting the job done! I would also like to offer a huge thank you to Kaye Newsome, Donna and Ramfis Campiz who are always there! They are always working so diligently for the good of the association each year and their support is appreciated. And a special thanks to all our sponsors. Without their continued support the FPP would be unable to invite such wonderful instructors each year without raising our tuition significantly. Backgrounds by Maheu Canon, USA Excel Frames Lumix Museum Bond Nik Software Picsera Pro Camera Cases Reedy Photoprocess Red River Paper Showcase Photo Sigma Southern Photo Technical Service Whitehouse Custom Color Next year, we will be holding Florida School in the second week of June. We have had many requests from our members to make this change due to the many family events that occur at the end of May and beginning of June. In an effort to further accommodate member requests we will be consolidating Florida School to a four day format of instruction. The daily hours have been adjusted to still exceed the minimum requirements of a PPA affiliate school. Florida School has always exceeded the minimum affiliate school requirements and continues to provide quality educational programs at a great value. This would be less time away from your families and businesses as well as less expenses while still maintaining our high educational standard of excellence. SAVE THE DATES! June 7-10, 2015

iPad: Open for Business Victoria Kelly

The first iPad was released on April 3, 2010 (seems like just yesterday!) with the most recent models, the iPad Air and the second generation iPad Mini being revealed in 2013. You might also be interested to know that as of October 2013 the App Store has more than 475,000 native apps by Apple and third parties and, in the last quarter of 2013, there were 26 million iPads sold which was a new record, beating handily the record set in 2012. So I thought it time to review with you my favorite apps and why my iPad is like my American Express: I never leave home without it. Here’s a quick rundown of my “Big 3”: Line2: I completely did away with the landline in the studio over a year ago. I ported my studio telephone number to Line2 which uses VoIp technology to give me the flexibility of having the studio phone with me whenever I’m away on location. The good news? I

dropped the cost of my studio phone service over 60%. Square: If you aren’t using the little white square reader for your credit card processing, maybe it’s time you gave it another look. There’s no monthly contract, no machine to keep in compliance and no tiered fees--just a flat fee for every credit card, even AmEX! (You should note that there is a slightly higher fee for cards keyed manually instead of swiped.) Square isn’t for everybody, though, so do your research before making the switch. Portfolio: I keep samples of my current work here...I can brand this app with my logo and show/hide galleries depending on who is viewing. If a bride is looking at my wedding samples she can even make notes on favorite images--I can email her the notes she’s made so we’re sure that none of the images she wants gets missed. Here are the apps that round out my business arsenal:

Dropbox: This app is one that I have on both my iPad and Mac. Any file that I need to access on the iPad I can drag into my Dropbox on my computer. Evernote: Definitely one of the best-kept secrets around--I have it on all my devices: iPhone, iPad, Macbook Pro--knowing that whatever notes I make will be synced across all of them. I can include web clippings, documents, photos...and have as many notebooks as I need. (And the best part? it’s FREE!) GoodReader: I stopped looking at PDF readers when I found GoodReader. More and more businesses are going green and choosing to distribute PDFs for reports and such instead of printing hard copies. The Treasurer for my Rotary club sends out financials as PDFs each month before our board meeting. I load the documents into Good Reader via Dropbox and I have each close at hand for referral. Splashtop: This simple little app does one thing extremely well: it allows me to access my Macbook Pro remotely--if you’re using ProSelect to show images you might want to check this one out. SignNow: This is a recent addition for me: how many times have you needed to sign a document but didn’t have access to a printer or a FAX machine? I can import from Dropbox or email, sign the document with my signature that I’ve saved and email it to wherever it needs to go. Easy Release: This little gem came in handy when I was a student at this year’s Florida Schooll--I could fill in the model’s name, model information and email a copy of the release to the model’s email address.

Remote: I use Keynote on my Mac to prepare presentations for use when I’m speaking or teaching. Using Keynote Remote gives me the capability of accessing the presentation on my iPad to change screens without being tethered to the front of the room where the computer is cabled to the projector. FlightBoard: While I don’t travel nearly as much as I used to I still like knowing I can track each flight’s arrival/departure and know when to be where I’m supposed to be. PhotoSync: I use PhotoSync to transfer images from my computer to specific albums on my iPad. It works beautifully--and fast! Snapseed: I absolutely LOVE playing with Snapseed! Those great little happy snaps I’m making with my iPad or iPhone get transformed into quaint art pieces with Snapseed. (I even have a gallery with my personal art in Portfolio.)

If you’ve been putting off investing in an iPad because you can’t justify the cost for a tablet that you’ve heard is just for reading books or watching videos, give it another look as a business tool.

My use of the iPad in my business life has completely changed the way I pursue some tasks.
