EDITOR’S LETTER

dear...

This. Is. BIG. I couldn’t help but think how big, as I uploaded this month’s edition of Framework. Our first September issue! Anyone with a remote interest in fashion and the world of glossies can tell you the importance of this one month. And, if pure size is any indication, let’s just say September is the most content-rich issue yet. We’ve packed our pages with the best in fall fashion and lifestyle, and a few new staples you can look forward to each month. In “Book Club,” page 14, we’re giving you the run-down on three great reads with new beginnings in common. And in “Beauty School,” page 26, our resident beauty expert shares a step by step for the perfect red pout. (Plus, don’t miss out on our Beauty giveaway from Bourjois Paris!) September is synonymous with fall style, and in this month’s interviews we bring you the faces of fashion—some of Vancouver’s best industry insiders. When it comes to careers in the rag trade, these women exemplify the passion, drive, and commitment needed to succeed. From our cover girl Monika Hibbs, who’s blog “The Doctor’s Closet” launched her thriving jewelry business, to Christie Lohr, who made a name for herself first on Breakfast Television and now with her Nine to Five career websites, our fall features are a must-read. Wondering what to wear this season? “The Art of Investing,” page 56, makes a strong case for the classics, and our September “Blogger Panel” is in full accord. This month

BOOK CLUB NEW BEGINNINGS

EVERY MONTH WE CHOOSE THREE MUST-READ BOOKS, FROM RECENT RELEASES TO OLD FAVOURITES, THAT WOULD FIT INTO ANY FRAMEWORK GIRL’S BOOK CLUB. IT’S JUST ONE MORE EXCUSE TO GET TOGETHER WITH FRIENDS OVER SWEET TREATS AND COCKTAILS!

by Sara Constantineau Even if your school days are long gone, there’s something about September that feels like a fresh start. The carefree days of summer are ending and it’s time to get down to business, tackle new challenges, and dream up new goals. That makes it the perfect time to read something that inspires you and motivates change. This month’s picks all share that contrasting quality of uncertainty and optimism that comes from nostalgic reflection, enabling self awareness so you can break out of your problems and begin anew.

THE RULES OF CIVILITY BY AMOR TOWLES

4/5

THE STORY

Witty working girl Katey Kontent reflects on her life-changing 25th year living in New York City in the late 1930s. While celebrating New Year’s alongside her glamour-loving bestie Eve, she meets the elusive and handsome Tinker Grey. His friendship brings her into the inner circle of Manhattan’s movers and shakers and exposes her to the sabotage and subterfuge that occurs when you rise from obscurity.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

This Great Gatsby-esque novel presents a fascinating look at New York City in a time of great transition, effortlessly evoking the style, music, culture, and society of the era. Despite the historical setting, Katey’s drive to succeed in her career and relationships makes her ultra-relatable to today’s twenty-somethings striving to make a name for themselves.

THE GLASS CASTLE

3.5 / 5

BY JEANNETTE WALLS

THE STORY

Jeannette Walls offers an intimate, nonjudgmental account of her destructive upbringing, revealing how she and her three siblings were both enchanted and abandoned by their incredibly dysfunctional parents. Despite the poverty, mental illness, chaos, and danger that permeated her childhood, she is able to recognize her own strength and fight for a better life.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

The truth is often more astonishing than fiction, and this memoir about trumping adversity proves it. It’s a universal story about rising above a difficult past to become the person you want to be, no matter how the cards are stacked against you.

BEST FOR: ANYONE SEEKING TO TRIUMPH OVER HARDSHIP

THE SENSE OF AN ENDING

4.5 / 5

BY JULIAN BARNES

THE STORY

Middle-aged, divorced, and average in all respects, Tony Webster recalls his seemingly unremarkable life, starting with the schoolaged friendships and relationships that continue to affect him decades later. This brief but piercing story examines love, loss, death, and the messiness of life and how we remember it.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

Winner of the Man Booker Prize, this somewhat dark and philosophical story provides an opportunity to reflect on both the mundane and sometimes extraordinary events that shape us.

CUISINE INGREDIENTS (CONT'D): ½ teaspoon vanilla 4 ounces/100g Callebaut milk chocolate, coarsely chopped DIRECTIONS: • In a large mixing bowl, beat together eggs and sugar. Add cream cheese, vanilla, and 3 tablespoons of Kahlua; beat until creamy and well incorporated. • In another bowl, combine coffee and the remaining Kahlua. Dip both sides of a ladyfinger into the coffee and place on the bottom of a 12x8-inch rectangular dish or pan, working quickly so biscuit does not fall apart. Follow with the rest of the ladyfingers, creating two rows. • Cover the ladyfingers with half the cream cheese mixture. Cover with another row of ladyfingers dipped in coffee. Cover the second layer with the rest of the cheese. Sprinkle with the milk chocolate. • Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least 6 hours— preferably overnight. wine trio

tasting: italian red wines WRITTEN BY SOPHIE COLLINS

Italian Red: Whenever we think of Italian food — pasta drenched with the finest pomodoro sauce, charcoal-grilled lamb, and even simple salads topped with the best olive oil — there is only one clear wine pairing: Italian red. While there are many different varietals in Italy, Italian red wines generally have flavours that complement the food they are served with. Slightly tannic and high in acidity, they bring out the rustic simplicity of the Italy’s best food. Usually full-bodied, these reds will pair wonderfully with your next Italian meal for two… or ten!

everyday table $

NIPOZZANO CHIANTI $14.49

Chianti is typically a more tannic red wine than others, which is characteristic of the Italian style. This wine pairs perfectly with easy pastas, anything with tomatoes, and grilled meat. We would also suggest trying it with your favourite hard Italian cheese! A full-bodied wine, this Chianti has undertones of red fruit.

dinner party $$

MASI FRESCARIPA BARDOLINO $18.85

Lighter than a typical Italian red, this wine is fruit forward with blueberry and raspberry immediately hitting the palette. Fabulous with chicken, orzo salads and even heartier fishes, we suggest sipping this on your patio before the cool nights roll in!

special occasion $$$

ARGIANO ROSSO TOSCANO $29.99

Rosso Toscano is the Tuscan term for table-wine, a wine that is served every day and is great with most foods. Made with mostly Sangiovese grapes (the most abundant in Tuscany), this Argiano is slightly tannic and spicy, smooth drinking, a deep red colour, and emits a fruity fragrance. It’s almost too easily enjoyed with most Italian foods!

And remember, “in vino veritas,” or as we say in English, “in wine, there is truth.” We hear this is especially true with Italian reds… framework

1. SMOOTH OUT

BEAUTY

Prep your lips for a super smooth application by lightly exfoliating in small circles with your toothbrush and warm water. This will get rid of all the dead skin and bring some circulation into your lips for a natural glow.

2. GET IN LINE

With a red lip liner, start by tracing just inside your natural lips to prevent the colour from bleeding onto the surrounding skin. Next, lightly fill in your lips with short, feathery strokes (don’t worry about being neat) to create the perfect base for your lipstick!

3. BE SHADY

Don’t be shy with red--the bolder, the better! Light haired with a fair complexion? Pick a cooler red with hints of pink. Brunette with olive or golden skin? Go for warmer reds with hints of coral. Deep wine and dark red look great on almost everyone.

4. FILL 'ER UP

Use a lip brush for more control. Start from the center of your lips and work outwards to the edges, always using short strokes rather than long sweeps. FASHION 1O1: The Modern Girl's Guide to Denim Shopping

O on

BY JENNIFER PISTOR

Denim shopping is often compared to bathing suit shopping; they’re both overwhelming and quick to unleash that relentless inner critic. The problem usually lies in that we often don’t shop for what actually looks good on us, and let common misconceptions cloud our vision. It’s no wonder many of us are frustrated with our perpetual search for the perfect pair of jeans! However, like a flattering bikini, a great pair of jeans is a must-have staple for the Framework Girl’s closet. Timeless and versatile, denim is easily transformed from day to night, or casual to dressed up, and is always a key fashion piece in our books. 30

Skinny Jeans Only Look Good n Skinny People

ody types can wear most denim cuts, it’s all w you style yourself. If you have a fuller hip, igh (or all of the above) create balance with a onger and more flowing top. Adding interest d your neckline with a scarf or statement les will also draw focus to your face, and from your lower half. If you’re looking for le extra height, wear those skinnies with great pair of heels to elongate the line of your legs. We’re especially fond of a patent nude pump!

Shopping tip NO SLAVE TO SIZE

Sizing is more of a guideline and is in no way an exact science; if you find a pair you love and fit, don’t worry about what number is printed on the tag. Most women are not one standard size in all denim brands; in fact, many of us will have 2-3 different sizes in our closets. Why? Not all jeans are cut from the same cloth, literally. Factors such as fabric and Lycra content, cut, and brand all contribute to the way different jeans fit. Don’t be afraid to grab several sizes when you’ve got your eye on a pair you really love--thanks to mass production, even multiple pairs in the same size can fit differently.

KEEP YOUR COLOUR

GOLDSIGN VIRTUAL HIGH RISE JEANS $225, NETA-PORTER NUDIE HAI KAI SKINNY JEANS $235, REVOLVE CLOTHING

MYTH

High Rise Jeans are Mom Jeans Not true. When styled properly, the high-waisted jean is a sexy, versatile, and forgiving denim option. A perfect cut for all body types, it will accentuate a small waist just as easily as hiding unwanted muffin top! If you’ve got straight, narrow hips, add some shape to your silhouette by tucking a pretty blouse into a well-tailored pair of high-rise trouser jeans. For curvy and pear-shaped gals, opt for a skinny or straight leg jean paired with a longer, belted top to show off your waist. Still nervous about referencing the 80’s? Stick to a dark indigo wash for classic style.

We love a great pair of ultradark indigo jeans! We don’t love the blue dye staining our white tees... To help avoid crocking (the fashion geek term for when dye runs or bleeds), try a vinegar or salt soak. Before wearing, flip your pair inside out and throw them in the sink with lukewarm water and a ¼ cup of white vinegar or salt. Let the jeans soak for 20-30 minutes, then rinse and take them straight to the washing machine. Wash your jeans as per the care label and hang to dry. This process helps lock in the dark dye keeping your jeans blue (or black) and your tees white!

FASHION

MYTH

Petite Girls Can't Wear Flared Jeans Of course they can! Opt for a boot cut over an exaggerated flare; a boot cut will look wider on a petite frame, but won’t overwhelm your entire look. Paired with a pretty blouse that cinches at your natural waist, your legs will look much longer. For extra height, just add heels or wedges and have a tailor hem your jeans so they just skim the floor.

GUESS DAREDEVIL BOOTCUT JEAN $98, THE BAY

Shopping tip FIT TO BE TAILORED

Unless you’re really lucky, it’s rare to find a pair of jeans that fit perfectly straight off the rack. The biggest secret and best friend of any fashionista is her tailor. Invest in one or two pairs of jeans, and have them expertly tailored to fit your body--not only will you get more wear out of a couple perfect pairs than many so-so pairs, you’ll feel like a million bucks whenever you slip them on. Equally as important, you should never pass on a pair of jeans just because they are too long! Hemming is the easiest alteration, and the proper length makes a huge difference. To keep the original look of your denim, ask the tailor for a Euro-hem. framework

33

KEEP YOUR COOL We all know how frustrating it is when your favourite denim has to be retired. To ensure your jeans live a long life and don’t fade or stretch out, be sure to avoid heat when washing or drying. Why? Almost all jeans are made with at least a little bit of Lycra— over time, heat will break down the Lycra causing your jeans to stretch out and lose elasticity (we’ve all seen those annoying bags and ripples). For best results, always cold water wash in the machine and hang to dry.

Shopping tip

CLEAR YOUR SCHEDULE, AND YOUR MIND Give yourself ample time to shop--even the best-laid shopping plans can be derailed by lack of time. If you’re stressed and rushed, chances are your dream denim won’t be found, and the experience will be anything but positive. When you’re on the hunt for that perfect pair, it’s easy to lose focus after a few ill-fitting attempts; if you start feeling discouraged, take a quick break to refuel, rehydrate, and refresh your outlook. Do yourself a favour by being open-minded and willing to try multiple stores, brands, and cuts until you find the right fit.

SIMPLE STEPS TO

STRETCH

YOUR FALL FASHION BUDGET

While a crazy, unbridled shopping spree is tempting, the quick-to-follow buyer’s remorse and spending guilt is not. (Neither is living off ramen noodles for a month to offset your new clothes!) So, in the name of guilt-free shopping, here are Framework's best budget tips...

1.

MAKE A BUDGET

This is one of the simplest (and often forgotten) ways to ensure you won’t be left high and dry mid-season with only one or two new pieces to show for it. A lot of people think the “B-word” means sacrificing all the things you love, but figuring out a monthly clothing budget actually allows you to shop guilt-free (within your allotted amount). It also helps you make less impulse purchases that inevitably end up unworn at the back of your closet by forcing you to think more carefully about what you’re buying. You may even choose to carry your September amount over to October, if you have your eye on a more expensive piece.

38

framework

2.

MAKE A MOOD BOARD

Research the trends and choose the ones that speak most to you. Tear pictures from magazines, scour the net for visuals, or even write yourself a list. This will help you narrow down your fall inspirations and will serve as a guide for making your purchase decisions. With this step you should always listen to your gut! If you can’t stand the 70’s inspired menswear trend, don’t buy into it! If you absolutely love boyfriend jeans but you’re not seeing them in the magazines, who cares? Wear them a n y w a y s ! (Besides, that

denim could be your signature, and mixing it with something of-the-moment will give you a look that’s both current and uniquely you.) Dress to make YOU happy, and the rest will follow.

3.

are obsessed with the season’s sleek, colourful styles, write that down! You can even divide your list into the fall and winter months, and categorize items on your wish list into monthly capsules. This way you’ll not only plan a cohesive wardrobe that is weatherappropriate (and therefore not have that beautiful wool coat sitting in your closet for weeks while you have no money left to spend on clothes you could be wearing NOW), you’ll also have something new and fresh to look forward to each month.

SHOP YOUR CLOSET

Why? Because designers are always recycling ideas. There are always at least a couple major themes that appear every fall season, just packaged s l i g h t l y differently. What does this have to do with me you ask? You’ll likely already

"Designers are always recycling ideas... You’ll likely already have several pieces that are on trend, or that you can update to be current." have several pieces that are on trend, or that you can update to be current. Often, older pieces become fresh when you style them differently, and you might find that a few key items will transform your existing clothes. Photograph or write down those pieces you’ll try to carry over into the new season and tuck them into your purse when you go shopping.

4.

MAKE A LIST

This is where tips number 2 and 3 come together. Just like grocery or to-do lists, an itemized list of the pieces you need to round out your fall wardrobe will help to keep you focused on your must-haves and stay on budget. Be specific about things like silhouette and fabric. If you need a new wool coat for the winter, and you

ACCESSORIZE, ACCESSORIZE

Buying a few key accessories is a fairly inexpensive way to transform your existing clothes (especially the basics) from boring or passé to fresh and exciting. Accessorizing is also a low-commitment way to try new trends. Not sure about emerald green from head to toe? Try mixing several shades of green in stackable bangles. fw

What propelled you to launch Standing Armed? I never intended to have my own business, but it was kind of a natural progression, which was really nice because it didn’t feel forced. I just got to a point where I felt like it made a lot of sense for the lifestyle I knew I wanted—flexible hours and being creative in my own outlet—I’ve always worked in a creative field but it hasn’t always been my own. I got to a point where I was confident enough to do it. At the time you were also working in design for Lululemon; how was the transition from employee to full-time business owner? I haven’t actually made the full transition yet, and I’m still working full time with Lululemon. Fall/Winter 2011 was my first collection, but I started developing Standing Armed in March of 2010. It started so slowly, like one day you get a business license, and the next day you do a name search—really gradual. It’s definitely in my goals to make the transition, but right now this is a really good balance for me. What does your workweek look like? Chaotic! I work at the studio on Sundays and Mondays, and also some evenings; then I work for Lululemon Tuesday through Saturday. Often I’m all over the place from studios to

meetings to factories and back again. It’s very sporadic, and I just fit things in where I can; if I’m on a roll with something, I just keep going because other days things may not come as easily. You’re a busy girl! Since it’s debut, has anything changed in the way you design or operate Standing Armed? Yes! Many things! Each season I change little elements of my approach. Not so much in terms of design, but in business. There have definitely been changes in my approach to production, sales, and showing the collection. But design is the most stable piece, especially because it’s my own. It grows, of course; like each season I’m building on top of what I’ve already created—so it expands in terms of depth of the line, and complexity and things like that. What is the biggest challenge with manufacturing in Vancouver? Limitations in terms of size and speed, because as a small business you’re kind of at the bottom of the pool. If the factory is busy then you’re like, “Please, please get this in for me!” Also, a lot of the very specialized factories aren’t here anymore—but you work around it. It’s always been important to me to produce in Canada, and I don’t view it as a handicap in any way.

framework

43

There are also benefits to being in the same time zone! How great is that? It’s so easy; I go visit the factory whenever I want. I can drive down to Clark Street and have a conversation with someone instead of calling China in the middle of the night. I also like to support the local economy in any way I can. When do you feel finished with a collection and ready to move on?

Spring/Summer comes very naturally—I do love Fall/ Winter too because of all the layers and all the pieces—but Spring/Summer is just easier for me to get my head into… every time. Which is your favourite season to dress for? I think this is almost the same! Spring/Summer is a no-brainer; I throw on a dress, and it’s easy. But I love the layers of Fall/Winter. In the summer I almost wish it

designing and playing around with different shapes, but I kept the collection very classic. Now I feel like I’ve let myself try some new things. My style is still very classic and very refined, but with a little bit of a twist to it. I’m playing more now, but it’s all about clean lines, finishings, and really subtle details; I think that carries through the collections pretty evenly. We love that about your line—you can continue to wear the pieces season

clothing shouldn’t be a hassle to wear... I want to look and feel beautiful but I want to do it easily. " Probably the moment I shoot the collection. The photoshoot for me is really exciting! It’s the first time I’m seeing everything all together and on a body. In that moment I’m always thinking, “Please work, please work, please work,” and then I see it and it’s like, “Oh yeah, it works!” (Laughs) There’s always that moment of doubt where you’re hoping it turns out like how you see it in your head! We know the feeling! Do you prefer to design for one season over the other?

were cooler once in awhile— even though I love the heat— because I want to wear a cute jacket with my summer dress! Winter I’m not as interested in because you have to wear too many layers—unless you’re on the mountain snowboarding, then it’s okay. Has your aesthetic grown over the past year? Yes, I think so, or maybe I’ve just fine-tuned it. I feel like I’m more in my own now. The first season with Standing Armed I was just getting back into

after season. Exactly. There’s a time and place for inexpensive, disposable pieces, but they aren’t something you want to spend $300 on. idea of what I want to create but when I pick my fabrics it can change a little bit. For Spring/Summer I knew that I was doing a collection of loose, flowy, Moroccan inspired pieces, but when I saw the mud-print silks a million other possibilities came to mind, which is really exciting! It’s inspiring to have something in your hand and know exactly what you’re going to create with it. Can you tell us about the Standing Armed woman? I spent a lot of time thinking about this when I started the brand. She’s well educated, she’s well traveled, and she’s at a stable point in her career and in her life. She’s really confident in herself and wants to invest, not only in clothing but also in art— the details are important to her. When I started the line, creating clothing that would let women feel really confident was important. Clothing also shouldn’t be a hassle to wear. The Standing Armed woman doesn’t have time to fuss over clothing but she still wants to look really great. Now that’s a girl we love! How is your personal style philosophy reflected in the brand? It’s all about the confidence piece and the ease piece. I want to look and feel beautiful but I want to do it easily. If I can wake up in the morning and throw on one or two really simple pieces I know I can

FASHION & DESIGN go out the door looking and feeling great for the day. Do you design with yourself in mind? I don’t consciously think about it in that way, but I think you can’t help it—it would be really strange to say no to this question, because I can’t imagine not wearing my designs. There are certainly pieces that I know don’t suit my body type and I can easily tell you that X, Y, and Z pieces don’t look great on my body, but I still love them and I’d wear them if they worked for my shape. I just create what

I’m inspired by at the moment. What inspired your collection this Fall?

It’s a lovely collection. Can you share a sneak peak of where you’re headed for next season?

I really got into nineties minimalism and clean lines really stripped of all detail. And then also the really structured silhouettes of the 50’s and how feminine they are—the epitome of the lady. The wools are all very stark with no extra lines, even the pockets are built in and hidden. The idea of structure, which came mostly from the fabrics, is contrasted by the fluidity of the silks and the organic watercolour-like floral print.

I’m obsessed with brocade! I went to Dubai to visit my brother, and when I came back I couldn’t really pinpoint my inspiration—I was looking a little too hard. But the collection is all about “opulent utility.” Dubai is all desert and then super-modern skyscrapers; it just goes from one extreme to the other! The collection is going to reflect that, and you’ll get a lot of crazy, opulent brocades and silks and shine, paired against

FASHION & DESIGN really basic cottons with lots of utilitarian pockets and classic shirting. It’s that mixture of “What would you wear to a really wicked party at a desert oasis if you had to travel all day to get there?” (Laughs.) Can we have the launch at a desert oasis?

In our eyes, your tailoring has really elevated Standing Armed above many of its local counterparts. What should women look for to identify a well-tailored garment? It’s the finishings again. There’s

special twist or unique detail is investment-worthy. Good fabrics are also important—I work a lot with natural fibres like wools and silks, not that there aren’t great synthetic options as well, just make sure it’s the right fabric for the garment. With something like a

the [next collection is] that mixture of ' what would you wear to a desert oasis if you had to travel all day to get there?' " That’s one party we wouldn’t want to miss! Tell us, how do you balance marketability and creativity in your collections?

a whole other world of tailoring that I would have to go back to school to learn, but you can tell quality buttonholes, cuffs, and collars. There’s definitely an art to it.

I think my designs are naturally more on the marketable side… although my grad collection was all high-end, theatrical evening wear. It’s very fun to go over the top that way! This year I’ve compromised and decided to send two gowns down the runway. They’ll be show-only and special order—they’re more showpieces but it will build awareness for the brand, they’re fun to create, and they’re still going to work into the rest of the wearable collection.

We love that you’re a big fan of investment dressing; do you have any tips for building an exciting yet edited wardrobe?

52

framework

My biggest tip is to know what shapes and cuts suit your body. Then, invest in the classic pieces—don’t spend a lot of money on a trend item that’s going to go out of style in 3 months! For me, a dress shirt is a wardrobe staple, but finding a classic shape with an extra

winter coat, wool is probably one of your best investment options. We couldn’t agree more. It’s pointless to spend a lot of money on a classic shape if the fabric is going to let you down in a few months. Definitely! I’ve also recently gotten into consignment—if you have old items you don’t wear any more, consign them and when you sell a few pieces you can go ahead and invest in one new garment to replace the ones you sold. If you’re done with something, let it go to someone else and move on. fw

ART INVESTING THE

OF

BY RHYA JOHNSTON-WALLACE

Build Your Wardrobe One Classic at a Time We’ll be the first to admit that we cringe at the thought of packing away our neon brights and floral print shorts as summer turns to fall. While we love refreshing our wardrobes at the start of a new season (and if we’re being truthful, many times throughout!), trends vanish and reappear in the blink of an eye and keeping track of it all can be a full time job; literally... people do it for a living! With retailers now receiving new stock almost weekly—and sometimes faster—it’s easy to feel like you’re always playing fashion catchup. And while technology makes staying on point with the latest trends easier than ever and accessible to anybody at the click of a button (hello, Net-a-Porter, ShopBop, and Asos), it’s safe to say our bank accounts are taking the hit. However, amidst the ever-changing landscape of personal style, there shines a constant light: investment pieces. Experts say we wear 20% of our wardrobe, 80% of the time;

56

framework

these pieces are the 20%. Never failing us, and always in style, this season we suggest throwing a twist on saying “out with the old, in with the new,” and mastering your closet with timeless classics. Designers used to put forth two collections a year, which made shopping a slow and calculated process. People would take stock of their wardrobe yearly and decide which essentials needed to be replenished or added. This fall, why not take a page from the book of fashion past and get back to basics with pieces that will not only endure, but also look fantastic? Timeless classics make up the skeleton pieces that serve as a structural framework for your wardrobe—think an alloccasion leather bag or a classic white shirt. Once you have these staples in your wardrobe, any outfit is possible! Just choose your base and fashionably adapt by adding a trending accessory, vintage gem, or personal style favourite. fw

Building Your Investment 'Portfolio' Investment pieces aren’t always a quick find, and we admit it can be an arduous process! Since these pieces are timeless, they exist in countless styles, with varying quality and from many different brands. It’s important to take the time to find the variation and fit that is right for you—one that suits your personal style. Although a little black dress may not be a hot ticket item off the Fall 2012 runways, when you find your perfect LBD it will always make you look and feel great. The right piece will suit any occasion life throws your way, and last for decades. As they are often big-ticket items, don’t plan on purchasing these classics all at once! • Buying investment pieces is about quality, not quantity. Make sure you’re choosing a piece whose quality can last you through the years. • The price tag doesn’t always translate to the level of quality. A $200 jacket can be made just as well as a $600 jacket.

CULTURE & LIVING

NICOLA GILLAM is your best friend, your honest opinion, your fashion cheerleader, and your confidante; she also happens to be the witty young owner of Steveston’s Violet Hill clothing boutique. Boasting a carefully curated selection of local and international brands alike, shopping at Violet Hill is akin to raiding your girlfriend’s closet—and that’s exactly the atmosphere Nicola strives to create. Not only is Nicola a perfect example of following your heart and trusting your intuition, her relationships within the industry prove that Violet Hill’s success spreads far beyond making sales.... framework

69

You opened Violet Hill in September 2010 after so many other local clothing boutiques were hit by the recession. Did it feel like a risk?

From the get-go you’ve been cultivating great relationships with local bloggers and fashionfocused media. How do you stay connected?

It did feel like a risk but it was what I wanted to do and I was so passionate about it; I knew it was now or never. I’m happy to say I haven’t looked back yet and the future is looking bright for Violet Hill. I won’t lie, sometimes it can definitely be a struggle, but it’s always worth it when I see a happy customer leave the store and return again at a later date.

I try to stay in the loop by being involved through sponsorship of events, going

What is the best lesson you’ve learned since the store’s opening? Love what you do and be passionate about it. If that isn’t present then you are done before you even start. Also, trust your gut. I’ve second-guessed myself before and have ended up wishing I listened to my intuition. Tell us about your involvement in the Vancouver area fashion community… I believe it’s really important to form connections with the people around you who are focused and passionate about your industry. I am always so pleased to meet new people in the Vancouver fashion community because everyone is so creative and tends to be very friendly and supportive of one another.

to fellow store owner’s events, and staying connected online with the people I’ve met in the past few years. They have opened me up to a world of opportunities that I might not have known about in the past. Throwing events and keeping people in the community excited about your store is always great too. I threw an event in March with Monika from The Doctor’s Closet and Georgia from Social Experiment where I invited

local bloggers and people in the fashion scene. It was fantastic because I got to form so many new relationships and got exposure from all of the bloggers who attended, which I truly appreciated. It was how I met the lovely Bria of Framework Magazine after all! That was definitely a great party! We know you love social media—which channel do you spend the most time updating? I dedicate the most time to twitter, but I also go through phases of obsession with different social media outlets. Which one do you enjoy updating the most? Twitter and Instagram! “I look amazing in Valencia,” as Derek Blasberg said in a Sh*t Fashion Girls Say video. Has that helped in building further relationships with your customers? One hundred percent! I am always shocked when people who run their own businesses don’t use social media. It’s such a great way to reach out to people who might not have heard about the store or who may not be in our neighborhood. I can easily showcase new items at the click of a button. PS. It’s free! Don’t we all love that? We certainly do! We also love the friendly, approachable atmosphere

in Violet Hill. How do you want your customers to feel when they leave the store? Like they just left their most stylish friend’s house and got to raid their wardrobe. I work hard to keep Violet Hill as friendly of an atmosphere as possible. I really don’t want people to feel like they are being pressured at all by my employees or myself to purchase something. We of course love to talk about the pieces we carry, but I know I don’t like to be in a situation where I feel pressured or uncomfortable in a store. We are a very friendly group of girls at Violet Hill and we just like to have fun and chat with everyone! What is your philosophy on shopping and creating a comprehensive yet exciting wardrobe? Buy only what you love, and dress for the gorgeous body you have not the one you want. Remember that comfort is key and wear pieces that make you happy. I always say to my customers: “If you take it home and are excited to wear it that night or the next day, then you know it’s for you!” Are there any recurring tips you find yourself giving clients on how to style themselves that you could share with our readers? It’s most important that you love it! I always have people

74

framework

saying they worry what their significant other would think but I say they aren’t the ones wearing it so as long as you’re happy in it, that’s what matters. Personal style is not an easy thing to master. What’s the most common difficulty you’ve encountered with your clients? A lot of clients are nervous to try new things and styles they haven’t approached before. Just because it’s a major trend doesn’t mean it has to work for you so don’t get discouraged. Fashion should be fun! This fall, which trends will you be showcasing? This season I’m all about long sleeved dresses, polka dots, and anything sheer. I also love navy and black in the fall. I find the combination to be very chic, especially when in one outfit—I’m a big believer in blue and black together and brown and black together! How do you find a balance between your personal style and your customer’s style when buying for the store? I won’t bring in anything that I don’t like or wouldn’t wear myself, but I also have to remember that my customers don’t always share my same taste or style. Sometimes I have to compromise; whether it’s on colour, print, texture or shape. Now that I’ve been open

for two years, I feel that I have a much better grasp of who my customer is. I’m able to focus more on making sure I please her while still being proud and excited about the pieces I carry in the store.

"BUY ONLY WHAT YOU LOVE, AND DRESS FOR THE GORGEOUS BODY YOU HAVE NOT THE ONE YOU WANT. REMEMBER THAT COMFORT IS KEY AND WEAR PIECES THAT MAKE YOU HAPPY "

Which are your favourite tradeshows to attend? MAGIC/PROJECT in Las Vegas. I would love to do Capsule in New York and some of the L.A. markets in the near future too.

CULTURE & LIVING What is your favourite season to buy for? I love buying season in general, so it’s hard to pick which season I prefer. I like the fun and ease of Spring/Summer

dressing but I think my heart lies in Fall/Winter. It’s more of a challenging season to buy for and I like that. And to dress for? Fall/Winter. I’m a boots, saggy toque and sweater girl who

loves to show personal style details with accessories. It’s a hard choice though because I love the easiness of a summer dress. Can you share a little bit

about how you approach merchandising at Violet Hill? I prefer to merchandise by brand. I keep the brand’s items together because many of my customers are brand loyal and like to go straight to what they

like and are familiar with. I also like to re-merchandise the store often. It’s always good to keep things fresh; often when I do that, customers tend to notice things that they might not have before. That being

said, I do have some tips I like to keep secret … Are you ever surprised by which items take off and which ones are slow movers? Always! It’s definitely framework

happened to me before when I’ve bought a piece that I absolutely love but people look at me oddly and ask “What is this?” when it hits the sales floor. Other times I’ve brought in an item I wasn’t crazy about but my rep really loved and it flies out the store! Now that I’ve really gotten to know my customer I’m having fewer misses. You’ve been very supportive of new local brands, especially accessory lines. What do you look for when approached by designers? What are the must-haves for a collection to make it into Violet Hill? I always look for something eye catching and original. I choose pieces that look like they belong and fit in Violet Hill and go with the brands we carry. They also of course have to be items of good quality at the right price point. With bloggers turned Etsy sellers cropping up left and right, do you have any advice for hopeful new designers? Be original and create your own designs! Make something you are truly passionate about and not just something that you think can make you money fast. Quality and creativity is key and is what will get you noticed. There are some solid Vancouver-based Etsy sellers that I think stay true to that— I’m always happy to support the good ones. framework

DRIVE

NINE FIVE TO

photography by Marc Marayag

PUT CHRISTIE LOHR IN A ROOM FULL OF FASHION AND BEAUTY hopefuls and she’ll undoubtedly set passions ablaze. With her recruiting experience and determination to help others achieve their career goals, it’s no surprise the founder of Canada’s premiere fashion and beauty job sites, Style Nine to Five and Beauty Nine to Five, has created her dream job. No stranger to hard work, she cites confidence, drive and motivation as the keys to her success. Early on a Tuesday morning we met with Christie at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia where we discovered her most memorable career moments, picked her brain about the growth of the Nine to Five brand, and played dress up in her fall fashion favourites… 94

STYLE & BEAUTY We heard you grew up in a small town. What kind of influence has that had on your career path? Yes! Port Hardy, the northern tip of Vancouver Island. I think coming from a small town makes you dream big, but I also had the drive and entrepreneurial spirit from a very young age. You started out on the retail floor. Are there any lessons/skills learned

What qualities have helped you get to this point in your career? Being confident, assertive, driven, disciplined, and motivated! You launched both Style Nine to Five and Beauty Nine to Five with great success. Did you ever have moments of doubt? I went into this with confidence because of my job

flexibility in my daily schedule, and seeing the results of an idea coming to life. I love hearing testimonials from jobs seekers and employers, and also loved creating my Nine to Five team—that comes from managing a staff of 20 when I was a store manager. That was my one of my favourite jobs! Tell us about your business’ expansion from fashion to beauty… Fashion and beauty really do

"I REALLY HAD NO PLAN B, BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING ELSE. WHEN YOU WANT SOMETHING SO BAD, YOU PUT EVERYTHING YOU HAVE IN IT AND THAT ALONE WILL MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE AND BRING YOUR IDEAS TO LIFE. HUSTLE!"

from that position that you continue to apply today? Oh yes, all of the skills I have today came from my retail career. From a sales associate to eventually becoming the store manager I learned a sense of urgency and quick problem solving skills, how to delegate and multi-task, be a mentor, lead by example, how to put the customer first and how to keep them happy by going above and beyond. Most of the time it's the customer’s experience that brings them back.

as a recruiter—I knew there was a need and that it would work. I really had no plan B, because I didn't want to do anything else. When you want something so bad, you put everything you have in it and that alone will make your dreams come true and bring your ideas to life. Hustle! Entrepreneurship is not for everyone. What do you love about it? It definitely takes a lot of selfdiscipline. But again, when you believe in your idea, you work hard to make it work. I love the

go hand in hand and it was the next obvious step. I also had to turn down some beauty customers who wanted to post makeup artist and spa jobs on Style Nine to Five; I just didn't want to mix the two. It was then that I thought, “it makes sense to venture into Beauty— I'll do it.” When I launched Style Nine to Five, it wasn't with an intention of expanding the Nine to Five brand, but two years later, Beauty Nine to Five was born. If you weren’t working in either of these industries, what would you be doing? framework

Something to help others, a counselor maybe. I've learned a lot through my life and relationships. I've read a lot of self-help books and have done a lot of soul searching. I now understand that people act a certain way because of this or that; every action comes from somewhere. Have there been any “pinch-me” experiences in your career when you thought, “I can’t believe this is happening?" Yes—my first fashion segment for City TV's Breakfast Television; it was a beach segment live from Kits Beach. In my early 20's I always thought how amazing it would be to do that, and years later, it happened. On the business front, it was when the big companies started to become customers. When do you feel most fulfilled? When we get lots of postings on the site because I know that it’s exciting for job seekers and that they'll find an awesome position. Your sites have changed the way many fashion and beauty companies find their employees, and it’s setting the bar even higher for job seekers. What are the top three ways potential candidates can make their resumés stand out? I always talk about catering

STYLE & BEAUTY your cover letter to the company you're applying to. I don't want a general message to all. Explain why you want to work for that company, what you love about the company you're applying to, and what about your experience makes you a standout candidate. If you send a "To whom it may concern" cover letter, it shows lack of effort or interest. Your resume should only have industry specific details; you may have worked at McDonald's as a teen (as did I!), but as your experience grows, you can leave that out.

What factors do you look at when you’re recruiting for a position? Passion and interest for the position. You may not have as much experience as someone else, but if you prove you want it, I'll consider you. I also look for hands on experience. There are some things a textbook just can't teach you. It’s clear that you’re passionate about connecting companies with their ideal employees and vice-versa. How does

"I YOU MAY NOT HAVE AS MUCH EXPERIENCE AS SOMEONE ELSE, BUT IF YOU PROVE YOU WANT IT, I'LL CONSIDER YOU. I ALSO LOOK FOR HANDS ON EXPERIENCE. THERE ARE SOME THINGS A TEXTBOOK JUST CAN'T TEACH YOU." Make the font clean and use bolding and headings. Hiring managers have hundreds of resumés to go through and making it easier on our eyes is a plus. Besides the obvious spelling errors, what mistakes should job seekers avoid in their applications? Be professional but avoid using fancy words like 'perhaps', 'therefore', and 'hence'. It’s better to be real and show us who you are.

to everyone. Companies are also creating new positions all the time, and they now have somewhere to post! With the continued surge in online networking, we hear a lot about the importance of personal branding; what is your view on the blog as an online portfolio? Having a blog is like having an online portfolio in a way; it gives us a glimpse into your life and your personal style. As an employer this gives us another way to get a feel for who you are. Years ago, I had christielohr.com and I'm so happy I did that. It's helped me along the way. Are there any social media channels you wish didn’t exist? (Laughing) No. I'm thankful for all these social media networks. They’ve become an important part of Nine to Five and are a great way for us to connect to the thousands of job seekers out there, as well as fashion and beauty lovers alike. You often credit mentorship as a contributor to success. How should this kind of relationship be approached and cultivated? If there is someone you look up to, send an email inviting him or her for coffee. It's flattering and most people

won't mind taking the time to help someone out—what goes around, comes around. I'll always take the time to encourage, because I, myself, was once in their position. Mentorship is amazing for valuable advice and networking. Let’s talk about the reason we’re all here…style! What/Who has been your

What is your go-to workwear uniform? I keep it comfy. Usually I’m in skinnies, flats, a tank, statement jewelry, and a blazer. Easy and put together!

I want to wear more edgy leather pieces, a colourful coat, and since I've never been a matchy-matchy type of person, maybe a pantsuit in one allover print. I also want to try white head to toe, black and white, and red and burgundy— colours that I don't think typically suit me.

Invest in timeless pieces that will take you from season to season and something that you could wear 3 years down the road. Items such as a well fitted blazer that you can throw on with any outfit, a shift dress, a kitten heel pump, gold hoops, a loose fitting blouse that can be tucked in with a pencil skirt or left un-tucked with slim black pants… Try to save on items like a printed pant, or other pieces that are super trendy. Tell us, which Fall 2012 trends are you most excited to try?

COVER GIRL How long were you writing your blog The Doctor’s Closet before you took the leap to pursuing a career in fashion?

"I REALLY NEEDED TO DISCOVER WHAT I LOVED DOING ON AN EVERYDAY BASIS; WHAT MAKES ME WANT TO WORK LONGER HOURS AND STILL LOVE THE JOB."

There was no real time frame really. When I started the blog I was purely putting my time into a part of my life that I didn't have to stress over. Once I started blogging about what I loved, I started to gain a lot of followers. Probably around the three-month mark I had many different people and companies contacting me to take part in some amazing fashion projects, which led to where I am today! Have you always loved style and design? YES! Even being the science geek that I was, I always had an eye for fashion and loved seeking out new trends and styles! I would say it kept me sane... showing up to class in sweat pants was NEVER an option for me. I was taught to always look presentable and stylish. What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced since shifting your focus to fashion? Believing in what I really love doing and find interest in. That being said, I have a ton of interests and love everything from learning about the human body to what is going on at Fashion Week. But I really needed to discover what I loved doing

on an everyday basis; what makes me want to work longer hours and still love the job. I quickly realized it was fashion by the change in my mood and my excitement for life. We’re firm believers that sometimes you need to choose to be passionate in order to keep going. What gets you out of bed each morning? I strongly dislike being lazy, so that will make me jump out of bed! I always want to get my to-do list done, kiss my husband, go for my workout, work hard, interact with people, and make someone's

day... then I am happy! When my head hits the pillow at the end of the day I feel good and passionate about what I’ve accomplished. In past interviews you mention the importance of mentors; who do you look to for guidance? It took me a really long time to grasp the concept of “mentor.” I thought you had to choose the most amazing, put-together, successful, older, business-like person

getting you where you are now? Learning about what steps are important to be successful; yes, I believe there are specific steps to become successful! You can't just “wing it” and say you've made it. What better way to learn the ropes than to seek guidance from someone who's already done it and learned what ways work better than others? I like to think that mentors give you a little cheat sheet on how to do life.

"I LIKE TO THINK THAT MENTORS GIVE YOU A LITTLE CHEAT SHEET ON HOW TO DO LIFE." and learn everything from them. I've discovered only half of that is true. We need to recognize that mentors are all around us, and it’s important to soak up as much information from them as possible to become better at what we do! My mentors are friends, family, and business people I look up to. Some I seek more information and wisdom from than others... and over time I've recognized those who have become stronger mentors in my life. What role has mentorship played in

How does it make you feel to know that thousands of young women are inspired by what you do and how you live your life? Moments like those make me feel like “I've made it.” Then I snap back to reality and think there's more to be done! It is truly a great feeling though; it makes me feel like I'm doing something right. What is the biggest misconception others have about you? framework

"FIRST OFF, MY LIFE IS FAR FROM PERFECT. I AM JUST NOT THAT PERSON WHO IS GOING TO POST A PICTURE OF A PILE OF LAUNDRY, OR A MESSY HOUSE, OR A REALLY TERRIBLE HAIR DAY WITH A FACE FULL OF PIMPLES... "

I bring this topic up a lot. Social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, and especially Instagram can make life look PERFECT! First off, my life is far from perfect. I am just not that person who is going to post a picture of a pile of laundry, or a messy house, or a really terrible hair day with a face full of pimples.... (Which, by the way, happen regularly

at the Hibbs household!) I choose to post about things that I love like a clean white desk—that is not always clean—flowers that my husband brought home for me, or a beautiful day out in the sun. With all the reality we deal with on an everyday basis that, unfortunately, is not so picture perfect, why would anyone want to look at more crappy stuff on their Instagram feed? So, I don't post it. But that doesn't make my life perfect. I am thankful for all the blessings that I have in my life and pieces that may seem close to perfect, but there are other not so pretty pieces of my puzzle that I consider private and therefore choose not to post.

truly believe that BFREND wouldn't have lifted off the ground like it did—I am so thankful for the motivation that stemmed from my blog!

Fair enough, you have to draw the line somewhere! Let’s talk about BFREND. Your friendship bracelets could be labeled an overnight success— how important has The Doctor’s Closet been to the growth of BFREND?

They say imitation is a form of flattery, but it can be pretty hard to deal with others copying your brand. Can you tell us about your experience with this?

Thanks to the blog BFREND did indeed make it into the “spotlight.” Once I grew a following through my voice and blog, BFREND had quite the fan base. I was so not expecting it... nor did I have a company name! Actually, I didn't even have a company at that point! My readers loved what they saw and wanted a chance to buy a couple of bracelets that I created for a giveaway that month. If it wasn't for my readers I

How do you stay ahead of the curve with so many other Etsy shops popping up online? I don't. Keeping up with others is far too stressful and comes with unnecessary competition that I would rather not get into! I do what I feel fits with my timing. I try to keep up with the latest trends, designs, and colors. Other than that, it's really about what I feel is the next step; I would rather not follow someone else's.

Yes, I deal with this all the time! Copying someone else's idea or design and calling it your own is the new “imitation is a form of flattery” when it comes to an online business. Having your work plastered all over Pinterest for everyone to be “inspired by,” or creating it into their own DIY project seems to come with a really fine line. I completely understand that many people might not want to pay a certain price tag or would rather just be more creative and recreate my designs for framework

themselves; I have learned to be okay with that. However, creating an identical product, calling it your own and duplicating a brand that has already been established is not okay. This is all part of the business world and it's something that I have to deal with and understand—though I do believe that protecting my business and branding is so important and needs to be done in a professional manner. It's all part of the game. Now that BFREND as a brand is more established, how are you approaching the coming seasons from a design perspective? I think about new designs, colors and what is trending all the time. I am constantly thinking about how I can improve my designs and branding from one season to another. I feel like I'm starting to think like a real designer, but this has taken time and I'm still working towards that.

recent project…

We’d love to hear about your inspiration and direction for Fall 2012…

What aspects do you love most about your business?

New colors, more metals and lots more gold! This fall it’s all about keeping it simple and easy to wear.

The creative aspect of running your own company and designing a new product is pretty amazing! I constantly wake up with new ideas and think, “how can I make this work?”

We’re definitely seeing a shift towards simplicity this season with many personal style bloggers. Tell us about your most

I'm just in the middle of working on an inspiration board for an upcoming BFREND photo shoot. It's coming up fast and there are tons of ideas that are running through my head. I can't wait to see how it all looks behind the lens!

difficult for one person to be great at everything! What parts are the most challenging for you? My to-do lists are pretty long. I get stressed out if I don't get my all the items on my list checked off by the end of the day—most of the time I find that I fill my plate way too full. I have to keep telling myself that I can't get everything done... and not all in one day for that matter!

It reminds me what I have to do that day, also allowing me to spill over into the following days. You’re also a big advocate of regular workouts; what’s your favourite way to sweat? I love to run! PRAIRIE GIRL IN THE CITY Favourite fashion indulgence? Designer jeans. Fall trend to try? Menswear inspired pieces. I love the mix of feminine and masculine textures together for fall; lace and tweed are simply a divine combination. Best autumnal accessory? Scarves! I wear them year round, but there's something about a rich, textured scarf on a crisp fall night. This season I‌ Will rework some old favorites already in my closet. I'm a sucker for shiny new things, so I'd like to challenge myself to brush the dust off a few hidden gems in the back of my closet and make them feel new again.

DREAM, CREATE Favourite fashion indulgence? Beautiful dresses! I'm always able to justify the need for one more! Fall trend to try? A striped trouser, in classic beige and black or cream and wine red. So versatile and can be worn all year round. Best autumnal accessory? A faux fur scarf! I can't commit to a full fur jacket, so a scarf is still luxurious and warm and I don't look like a yeti! This season I‌ Am looking for investment pieces: a classic trench coat, a cropped leather jacket, and a crisp white blazer. Bright lipsticks are also on my list; small yet dramatic pops of colour are perfect for fall!

Favourite fashion indulgence? Buying the same piece in multiple colours. When it's true love, you just know...

Fall trend to try? I'm hoping to be brave enough to try leather pants.

Fall trend to try? I loved all of the gold that I saw on the Fall 2012 runways. I'm hoping to add the perfect gold pencil skirt or mini to my wardrobe very soon.

Best autumnal accessory? Does a fur vest count as an accessory, because I'm thinking of all the ways I will wear mine this autumn!

Best autumnal accessory? Scarves! A girl can never have too many - I have one in practically every colour. They are an easy way to perk up any ensemble and stay warm!

This season I‌ Am going to try and replenish the classic and neutral pieces of my wardrobe instead of buying statement pieces.

This season I‌ Plan to take a step back from "fast fashion." My focus will be on building a collection of classic, high quality items that I will love for years to come. framework
