memory, but it is fun (and maybe a bit traumatizing) to reflect on that tumultuous time come back-to-school season. Stories set in boarding schools are full of dramatic potential; if you keep hundreds of kids in close quarters with limited adult supervision, something exciting, romantic, or even revelatory is bound to happen.

A sixteen-year-old boarding school student has a past full of family tragedy that threatens her mood at every turn. She writes extensively in her journal, first about her roommate bestie Lucy, and then about the mysterious new girl Ernessa, whose odd nocturnal behavior and perceived fixation on Lucy causes our protagonist to believe she is not truly human.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

With a jealous, unreliable narrator, it’s difficult to separate facts from the biased recollections of a troubled teenage girl. This is a teen vampire story that goes back to basics; it is inspired by the gothic novel Carmilla, one of the first literary vampires that predates Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The allfemale setting elevates the politics of mean girls and queen bees with eerie and mysterious events that can’t be trusted.

When he falls for a fellow student, it suddenly becomes difficult to stay true to himself and keep his sexuality private.

AT PORT + QUARTER, ECLECTIC AND QUIRKY MEETS STRUCTURED AND MINIMAL.WITH A FINGER ONTHE PULSE OF CURRENTTRENDS, THE LADIES AT VANCOUVER’S CUSTOM-TAILORED INTERIOR DESIGN FIRM ARE CATCHING THE EYE OF HOMEOWNERS WITH DISCERNING TASTES. Kyla Ray and Michelle Miazga are the masterminds behind the full-service interior design firm Port + Quarter, which specializes in a masculine aesthetic. “Clients are often surprised that we’re women,” says Ray, who heads up the creative and marketing sides of the house. “For us, the masculine aesthetic creates spaces that are usable for both sexes,” says Miazga, who excels at the technical aspects of the business. “We’re not about furniture that you can’t sit on or things that are so delicate or frilly that you’d be afraid to touch them.” Guided by a design mantra that form follows function, Ray and Miazga draw on their respective strengths and collaborate on the vision of each project. “We can reign each other in or ramp it up,” Miazga says. “We’re constantly going to each other. I’ve said, ‘Ok, pick me a wallpaper,’ because I would just pick grasscloth or something really simple. I don’t take the risks that Kyla would take visually.” From full-scale renovations to revitalizing small

spaces, Ray and Miazga tackle every project with their signature style, celebrating texture, muted colours and functionality. One look at their portfolio and it’s clear that their creations are like well-tailored suits: high quality products that make their owners look stunning. “It’s all about our clients’ personalities,” says Ray, who prides herself on reflecting their lifestyles. When designing a space for a couple, Ray found Star Wars illustrations on Etsy that captured the husband’s interests and appealed to the wife’s artistic tastes. “There are ways to make even the quirkiest things an awesome, key piece of your design,” says Miazga. “One of the biggest surprises is that so many women are really digging our style.” For Ray and Miazga, you could say that the business runs in their blood. Miazga grew up in a family of homebuilders and woodworkers while Ray’s family consists of architects and interior designers. “When I would babysit, I loved going into other

people’s houses,” says Ray, recalling her passion for design at a young age. “I would imagine what furniture I would put in there and how I would rearrange their living room.” Entrepreneurs at heart, Ray and Miazga met while working at a home staging agency. The connection was instant. The result was a match made in design heaven. Beginning with a residential focus in April 2012, Port + Quarter has since expanded into multifamily developments and commercial projects. In the future, the company will include an e-commerce website offering limited-run, prepackaged design options. The duo attributes their success to extensive market research and a solid partnership. Neither party could have envisioned starting this venture on their own. “We’ve kept pushing each other,” says Miazga. And true to their complementary fashion, Ray adds: “I think we ground each other too.” fw

It’s hard to find a complex red wine at such a great price point, but Cedar Creek does it with their Merlot Cabernet. It doesn’t forget to remind you of summer, though, with its ripe berry flavours.

While many wino’s switch to red during the cooler months, if you’re lucky enough to live in a place that keeps the heat coming well into September and October, this wine is for you. It’s light yet full in flavour, with hints of citrus and green apple. It can be aged due to its complexity, so don’t worry about stowing it away for an unseasonably warm autumn day.

For the lucky ones who still have early fall getaways planned to warm tropical destinations, this wine will surely prepare you. Made by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt (we were as surprised as you are now!) this rosé is perfectly balanced with berry flavours that pair wonderfully with late summer and early fall produce.

tip: There are no rules when it comes to enjoying certain wines in certain seasons.

In our opinion, it’s all about what you like. With that said, there is nothing more soul-warming in fall’s crisp weather than a crackling fire, homemade soup, and a glass of your favourite wine (red, white, or rosé).

Décor Decorating for a white party may sound straightforward, but using a monochromatic colour scheme (read: different tones of the same hue) can be tricky. For example, layering white tablecloths with white napkins white plates may scream “white party!” but creates little drama, and can often fall flat. By keeping a few key design concepts in mind, you’ll create both sophisticated décor and a great party atmosphere. We were fortunate to work with The Cross Décor and Design, who gave us access to some fabulous white accessories to help complete the look.

Recipe WILD SOCKEYE SALMON WITH RED WINE CHERRIES A N D F E N N E L serves 4-6 • 4 OUNCES WILD SOCKEYE SALMON • 1/2 LB RED CHERRIES • 1/4 CUP RED WINE • 1 TBSP HONEY • 1/2 HEAD FENNEL • 1 TBSP HIMALAYAN ROCK SALT 1. Remove skin from salmon and slice thinly. Be sure to keep cold at all times.

2. Pit and halve all cherries. Thinly slice fennel and place into ice cold water.

3. Mix together red wine and honey then pour into a bowl with the cherries.

4. Drain fennel and place a small bunch per plate.

5. Place salmon on Rock salt for 30 second per side.

6. Put salmon on top of fennel and place cherries on top.

Dessert We served a collection of confections from Sweet Bake Shop. Delicate meringues (which looked crisp and sculptural on the white cake stand), cake pops (served in a white glass vase, these sweet treats acted as edible florals), and gorgeous vanilla cupcakes (the kind you’d fight over like Jimmy Choos at a sample sale) left our palates on a high note, especially when paired with the last bubbly. fw

WE WERE SURPRISED TO DISCOVER YOU HAVE A DEGREE IN CRIMINOLOGY; AT WHAT POINT DID YOU MAKE THE PROFESSIONAL SWITCH TO FASHION? Lots of people are surprised to learn that! I was planning on writing my LSAT after university so I decided to work at a law firm for my degree’s practicum. It was the best experience I had— being completely involved in personal injury law and speaking to clients, witnesses and working hands on with court cases. It was during that time though that I realized while I loved Criminology and Law, I was too much of a busy body and too creative to sit behind a desk everyday. I

took some time off from school to really think about what I wanted to pursue, and fashion was something that always came to mind. It was then that I began looking into my options and exploring fashion schools in Vancouver. WHO OR WHAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR LOVE OF STYLE AND CLOTHING? To be honest, I have no idea! At a really young age my cousin and I used to put on our moms’ high heels and walk around on tile floors because we liked the sound they made. As long as I can remember I have always loved clothes and looking at what other people are

In elementary school I was fascinated by my younger teachers and what they wore; I remember always thinking to myself that I wanted to be like them and wear what they wore when I grew up. WE OFTEN THINK HOW FABULOUS IT WOULD BE TO TIME TRAVEL THROUGH DIFFERENT ERAS IN FASHION; WHICH PERIOD WOULD YOU MOST WANT TO VISIT? I’ve always loved the fashions of the 1920s. It was a time for women to express themselves in a whole new light; hemlines became shorter and clothing became less restrictive. I would love to see firsthand such huge changes being made in fashion. WHICH ITEM IN YOUR OWN WARDROBE IS NEAREST AND DEAREST TO YOUR HEART? Opening day of the store I wore a navy blue tunic. The piece itself is nice, but it’s the memory associated with it that makes me love it. It reminds me of my very first buying trip and how stressed and excited I was for this new venture; I’ll keep it forever as a reminder about that special time in my life. WE THINK EVERY FRAMEWORK GIRL HAS A SENTIMENTAL PIECE IN HER CLOSET! HAVE YOU ALWAYS DREAMT OF OPENING YOUR OWN BOUTIQUE? I think I speak for all women and girls when I say that at some point everyone wants to own their own boutique; the thought of having access to racks and racks of clothing seems like a dream come true! But in all honesty, this idea only began when I was in fashion school and was learning more about entrepreneurship and small business. Being a lover of all things fashion, and often getting asked by friends or complete strangers where I bought an article of clothing, the wheels began to turn and the idea of opening of my own boutique quickly overtook my daily thoughts.

THAT’S WHEN YOU KNOW IT’S AN IMPORTANT IDEA. WAS THIS NEIGHBORHOOD ALWAYS YOUR TOP CHOICE FOR LOCATION? Yes! In 2000 my family moved to South Surrey and while I loved the area I always thought that it lacked a great women’s boutique. Throughout the years I found myself having to drive into Vancouver to find items I wanted, and I always felt that if I thought there was a lack of options in the area, surely there were many other women thinking the same thing. I couldn’t be happier with my decision to open at Morgan Crossing. THREE YEARS AFTER OPENING MUSE, WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THE STORE VERSUS THE REALITY? Looking back now, I know I was eager and naïve when the store first opened. I strongly believed that people would just flock to the store! It didn’t take long to learn that I had to work really hard at building relationships with clients in order for that to happen. When we first opened, there were a few other women’s boutiques in the area. Three years later, most of them have closed for various reasons, so I’m very aware how blessed I am for the success of Muse. Something we talk a lot about at the store with my girls is the fact that our clients have the choice to shop anywhere they want, but they choose us; I am very grateful for that. It makes me and my employees work that much harder to give our clients everything they’re looking for. WHAT FACTORS HAVE BEEN MOST IMPORTANT IN THE SUCCESS OF THE STORE? Social media is a huge one, most definitely. Being connected to our clients through Facebook, Instagram and Twitter has really changed our business, as they can see immediately what is new in the store and can “shop” from the comfort of their own homes. In-store events have been another big factor for us; they’re always a great time and an opportunity for our clients to have a glass of wine and get their hands on new arrivals. Also, knowing our demographic—what their

I just returned from a 12 day buying trip in LA and Vegas and I am exhausted—mentally, physically and emotionally. I used to think that the fashion industry was glamorous; you get to work with clothing all day, how difficult could it be? But I have quickly learned, as a retailer and buyer, that there is nothing easy about this industry. I am thinking seasons and months ahead at all times trying to forecast what my clients will be looking for. I have no crystal ball, which makes this business hard and trying at times, but also very exciting! WHEN BUYING, HOW DO YOU DISTILL THE MYRIAD OF FALL TRENDS TO THOSE THAT WILL WORK FOR YOUR CUSTOMER?

It’s really easy to get overwhelmed and excited when buying for a new season, so I have to constantly ask myself, “Which client from the store could I see wearing this?” Often I’ll get a few names and faces popping into my mind, which is ideal. I also have to remind myself who my clients are, and what their day-to-day routines look like and then look for pieces that compliment their lives. If I find pieces that I love, and that I think our clients will love, then they make the cut. It sounds like a simple process, but sometimes it can be hard to stay focused and on track when you’re seeing so many exciting pieces. Second on my happiness list is having my morning cup of peppermint tea; there’s something very soothing and calming about peppermint tea for me, and I have to have one every morning. And thirdly, connecting with people during the day makes me happy; this includes everyone who is important to me. A short visit or even exchanging a text message with someone just so they know you’re thinking of them, those types of small gestures mean the most to me. fw

YOU'RE ORIGINALLY FROM CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA. WHEN DID YOU MAKE THE MOVE TO VANCOUVER? I moved with my parents and sister to Canada in 2002. We first moved to Toronto—for a short time—before deciding British Columbia would be a better fit for our lifestyle. We visited friends who lived in Whistler and never left. My parents and dear Grandpa Dessi still live there. I try to get up there as often as possible; it’s my favorite place to relax and recharge. HAVE YOU ALWAYS DREAMT OF WORKING IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY OR DID YOU HAVE OTHER CAREER ASPIRATIONS? I always knew I wanted to be a part of the fashion industry, but was more intrigued by the business side than design. My aunt and uncle lived in New York and would send American fashion magazines to me in South Africa. It was my dream growing up to live in Manhattan and work

at a fashion magazine. It still kind of is. WHAT IS YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND, AND WOULD YOU DO IT DIFFERENTLY IF YOU WERE TO GO BACK? I took the fashion merchandising program at Blanche Macdonald, and various marketing and PR courses. Looking back, I don’t think I would have done things differently. After finishing school, I volunteered and interned at different companies, which played a big part in my success early in my career. WHAT LED YOU TO PUBLIC RELATIONS? Right after school, I landed an internship and was then hired by a woman who worked for a fashion trend forecasting company from Paris; it was an incredible opportunity! When she had to relocate to LA, we had a conversation about my career. She encouraged me to look into public & media relations. The more I learned about PR, the more

it became clear that this is what I wanted to do. SMART WOMAN! SINCE THEN, HAS ANYONE HELPED GUIDE OR SHAPE YOUR CAREER? Many people have inspired me. I learned a lot from the people I interned and worked for early on in my career; I was lucky to find opportunities where my bosses became my mentors. I also traveled to New York on various occasions to work at Fashion Week. I learned so much about the industry on these trips, and this really helped inspire me to stay the course working in fashion. YOU'RE NOTHING IF NOT WELL-CONNECTED IN VANCOUVER; HOW DO YOU APPROACH NETWORKING? Thank you! Networking is a huge part of being a publicist. Being authentic in how you present yourself is key. It’s also very important to remember people’s names when you’re introduced. You’re not networking if you can’t remember the person’s name! TOUCHÉ. IT CAN LEAD TO SOME VERY AWKWARD MOMENTS. WHY DID YOU START YOUR OWN PR FIRM? I had been working for various companies, but knew I wanted to create my own business. After doing a lot of research, I made the bold move of going freelance, and then started my agency, Lj PR in 2009. I’m really glad I had the guts to do this, as it was the best decision I could have made. It was an incredible amount of work, and very stressful, but I was determined to make it happen. GUTS MIGHT BE THE HARDEST HALF OF THE BATTLE. TELL US, WHAT IS YOUR DREAM PROJECT... I would love to be a part of the team that produced a runway show for a top tier brand like Chanel or Burberry. Runway shows are one of my favorite parts of my job, they are just so expensive and time consuming to produce. To have the

budget and manpower to produce a show that could rival those at Paris Fashion Week would be incredible! I’ve worked on many runway shows and there’s nothing quite like that magic moment when the music is blaring, the lights go up and the first model hits the runway. AN ADRENALINE RUSH MOST DEFINITELY! YOU ALSO TEACH FASHION MERCHANDISING STUDENTS AT BLANCHE MACDONALD AND WRITE A FASHION BLOG, STYLE CALLING. HOW DO YOU BALANCE SUCH A FULL SCHEDULE? I really do enjoy all three of these roles, so balance isn’t an issue; finding enough hours in the day is the real problem! I work from home, which is perfect for my lifestyle as I’m constantly on the go—being completely mobile is key in my efficiency. I’m so happy I’ve managed to create a career I’m so passionate about. All three roles compliment and work well together, and I’m often working on multiple projects at once. I’m a

true Gemini. CAN YOU SHARE MORE ABOUT EACH OF THESE ROLES? Lj PR has given me the opportunity to work with international brands, produce runway shows for incredible designers, create events, and let me use my skill set to its full potential. I also love teaching and sharing my experiences with my students. Their energy and enthusiasm reminds me to be excited about the fashion industry. They’re also a good reminder of how hard I’ve worked and how far I’ve come; there is nothing more satisfying than hearing a student say, “You’ve inspired me to go into PR.” Style Calling is my passion project. It started just over a year ago under the premises “From the desk of a fashion publicist.” The idea was to create a place where I could document and share all the stories and experiences I tell my students about the industry. now expanded to cover fashion, beauty, trends and events. I have two contributors and have just started an interview section. I’m enjoying this role more and more as the website grows. YOU’RE A VERY BUSY GIRL! WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WORKDAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? My day usually starts quite early as I work with a few companies on the East Coast, so my phone is buzzing from the moment I wake up. I take the first hour to have a cup of coffee, catch the morning news and check social media before getting down to business. Emails, conference calls, meetings; every day is different. My job is never boring. HOW DID YOU EXPAND FROM THE WORLD OF PR INTO TEACHING? I kept a close relationship with Blanche Macdonald after graduating. I helped create the PR program and then was asked if I would teach it. I’ve been teaching at Blanche Macdonald for almost 5 years now. 2 years ago they asked if I would take on the fashion show production class too. Runway shows are one of my favorite things to do, so this has been a really fun class to teach. Blanche Macdonald is a wonderful fashion family to be a part of. I get to discuss everything I love about the fashion industry with young, enthusiastic students on a regular basis. It’s a great environment to be in. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE MOST OFTEN TO YOUR STUDENTS? Volunteer, network and be polite to everyone you meet. Vancouver is known for being a small city; the fashion industry is even smaller. You never know how important a contact might be 5 years from now. Also, like most creative industries, working in fashion can be incredibly tough. It’s not all glasses of champagne and fabulous events. You have to be willing to put in the time and effort to succeed. There is nothing glamorous about being on set for twelve plus hours!

He worked with me on numerous projects and always came to set with a positive attitude. He was often the first to arrive, and last to leave. Now, he’s editor in chief of The Social Life Magazine. I’m very proud of Josh. It’s fantastic to see all his hard work pay off. AS YOU PREPARE YOUR STUDENTS FOR THEIR CAREERS IN FASHION, ARE THERE ANY ASPECTS OF THE LOCAL INDUSTRY THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE CHANGE? I’ve seen dramatic changes in the Vancouver fashion industry over the past 5 years. We’re seeing bigger and better events, and more international companies expand their budgets to include Vancouver. It’s definitely improving and I hope to see this continue. Throughout my career I’ve had the opportunity to work with

many talented local designers. It’s such a hard industry to be in, and I’d like to see more support for local designers and entrepreneurs. WHEN YOU HAVE A SERIOUS LOVE OF ALL THINGS STYLE, FALL FASHION IS HARD TO BEAT. WHICH ITEMS TOP YOUR MUST-HAVE LIST? Like most fashion girls, I’m so excited for fall! I have my eye on a pair of black Rag & Bone ankle boots—perfect for running around the city in. I’m also on the lookout for a classic beige trench coat. It’s the ideal item for fall in Vancouver. IF MONEY WERE NO OBJECT, WHICH DESIGNER'S COLLECTION WOULD YOU WANT IN YOUR CLOSET THIS SEASON? Ooh, wouldn’t that be amazing? I’d have to say Prabal Gurung. Being a publicist myself, I know what clients are looking for in a feature. Working with other PR people is by far my best resource for information. They provide press releases, fact sheets, images – it makes my job as an editor that much easier. This was actually one of the motivating factors in starting Style Calling. I work with so many fantastic PR people, and I would be invited to incredible events. I wanted to help spread the word and contribute to their media hits. I have access to a lot of cool information through my line of work and now I get to share it with a broader audience online.
