Framework Girls, why don’t we all skip April’s showers and bring on the flowers? Though buds and blooms may not yet be appearing outside your windows, the April issue has a few favourite florals to tide you over. With a nod to Spring’s new beginnings, we’re thrilled to feature the darling actor Jodi Balfour, who’s advice for living a passionate life is spot on. Not only does her interview inspire self-reflection, she reminds us that home is where you make it.

While filming Bomb Girls in Toronto, Jodi fell in love with the city—if you live there now or are planning a visit—be sure to stop by our leading lady’s favourite places!

Back in Vancouver, we toured The Cross Décor & Design’s new studio, where designers Joanna Vagelatos and Erin Chow work hard making all their clients happy. A quick little read, it jumps between all the character’s perspectives, so you can try to uncover the clues and work those detective brain muscles before all is revealed at the end.

FACE 1. For skin as silky as rose petals,

we used BOURJOIS HEALTHY MIX GEL SERUM FOUNDATION. Applied with a stippling brush, this foundation blends effortlessly and gives you a "lit-from-within" complexion, which never looks dry or masque-like.

2. Reintroduce bronzer into your beauty arsenal this month, brushing BOURJOIS DELICE DE POUDRE BRONZER all over your jawline, cheekbones, temples, and forehead.

SOMETIMES SQUARE ONE IS THE BEST PLACE TO START. THE LIFE OF BAKING ENTREPRENEUR TESSA SAM WASN’T ALWAYS CUPCAKES AND RAINBOW FROSTING. SURE THIS OUTGOING VANCOUVER NATIVE RUNS HER OWN SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS AT THE AGE OF 27, BUT SHE WOULDN’T HAVE GOTTEN TO THIS POINT WITHOUT HAVING TO TAKE A GIANT STEP BACK FROM THE LIFE SHE THOUGHT SHE WANTED. After busting her butt to earn a Broadcast Performing Arts diploma from Columbia Academy, Sam scored a job as an on-air radio personality in Victoria. At the ripe old age of 23, she seemed to have her career path and her place in the world all figured out.

“I had everything I should have wanted — I worked so hard for it,” says Tessa.

“But I was unhappy.”

Like many twenty-somethings caught up in the throes of a quarter-life crisis, a despondent Sam decided to quit her job, move back to her hometown of Vancouver and take up work in the restaurant industry.

“The two years that followed were probably the hardest for me,” says Sam. “I was back at square one. I felt like I had wasted my time and the worst part was that I didn’t know what my next move was.”

Instead of making any moves, she worked to keep herself busy, and picked up a few front of house shifts at a little mom and pop bakery. On

the front lines of the operation, she’d often notice how people would come in for a slice of bread or cake and no matter what mood they arrived in, they always left — at the very least — a little bit happier.

“That’s when everything changed for me and that’s when I knew I had to be part of the dessert world,” explains Tessa.

She then bought stacks and stacks of baking books and started spending long hours pouring over YouTube and blog how-tos to soak in bakers’ tips and recipes. Years of trial and error later, she felt confident to take her skills online (with the help of her techy boyfriend), and her dessert blog eventually turned into a website — the current virtual home of her boutique custom baking company where she shares tips, tricks and recipes with fellow baking addicts.

This enterprising entrepreneur wasn’t one of those people born knowing what she wanted to do. (Although she wishes this were the case). She was just tired of working for someone else, doing something she didn’t really care about.

“I wanted to wake up every day excited about going to work. I wanted to be able to express my creativity.”

Now with her own full-fledged baking business, this cheery chick channels her inspirations into sweet treats people love — whenever the mood strikes.

On her blog you’ll find a pink ruffled cake inspired by her friend’s “terrier thing,” as well as hockey cupcakes to support our lads in green and blue.

She never knows who or what will be her next baking muse.

“A year ago, I was at a lunch and an elderly woman was sitting at the table to my left wearing a bunch of layered pearl necklaces and that’s how

I came up with the idea for a pearl cake. It’s weird, I know!”

Whatever your passion is, Tessa’s story shows that happiness comes to those who have the good sense to pursue it.

“Every job that I had before this one had one thing in common — they didn’t excite me.”

Thankfully, this one does, and every day she wakes up excited to create something beautiful and tasty that others will enjoy. fw

Downtown Vancouver, the corner of Seymour and Davie has a brand new look, and a pretty interior to match. Airy, open, and washed in soft white, the space—once boasting windows full of vintage cowboy boots—is now home to Yaletown fixture The Cross Décor and Design’s new interior design studio. Moving from little more than a nook to 1500 square feet, in house designers Joanna Vagelatos and Erin Chow now have room to expand both their workspaces and their clientele. CULTURE & LIVING AS KIDS, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? JOANNA: I wanted to be a doctor or female goalie in the NHL—obviously my career path changed as I matured!

ERIN: I'm pretty sure like most kids I changed my mind every minute, but I remember wanting to be a pilot.

THOSE ARE DEFINITELY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT YOU DO NOW! WHAT DREW YOU TO INTERIOR DESIGN? J: I always loved interior spaces; I was constantly thinking about how to make my bedroom more spacious and more beautiful.

Then in highschool I took an architectural technology course and that is where I realized what I wanted to do with my future.

E: As a kid I loved changing up my room—I would spend hours rearranging my furniture.

I would style my room to my liking and then take pictures with my wind up camera…

I should add those to my portfolio! As I grew older I became obsessed with design shows. There's just something about the way a beautiful space makes you feel.

WHAT KIND OF EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE DID YOU PURSUE TO GET STARTED IN THIS INDUSTRY? J: I attended the BCIT Interior Design program as well as

WE BELIEVE IT! CAN YOU WALK US THROUGH A TYPICAL WORKDAY? E: First thing Joanna and I usually sit down and review what we're going to work on for the day. As we have multiple projects on the go at one time, we prioritize what needs to be done. If we’re not out at client meetings or doing site visits, we are usually in the studio working on sourcing materials or furniture pieces, drafting, putting together proposals, or budgeting.

J: Our daily to-do list is pretty important—we allocate the tasks and duties and then emails are checked. After that it is head down and work!

WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? J: I ordered my wedding dress online, and had a sweet reggae band playing at the reception...

E: That's a tough one. I'm a pretty 'you get what you see' type of person, but people are usually surprised to know that I don't own a TV. GREAT ANSWERS! WE’D LOVE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL DESIGN AESTHETICS… J: I am drawn to a clean, minimal aesthetic, but with the addition of really unique pieces

and textures. Think concrete floors, white walls, cowhides, dreamcatchers, lots of neutrals, texture, organics, and ideally set on a beach with surf out front.

AESTHETICS! WHAT IS CURRENTLY INSPIRING YOU?

E: It's so hard to put all of my styles into one space. There are so many different aesthetics I love that I am convinced I will have to own three homes to accommodate them all!

My apartment is currently an eclectic mix of neutral mid-century modern with a Scandinavian touch. Maybe add in some bohemian, industrial and rustic… there's also a lot of one of a kind vintage pieces that I treasure.

E: I could spend hours on design blogs: SF Girl by Bay, Apartment Therapy, Design Sponge, and French by Design, to name a few. The list could go on forever!

Or someone who wanted to do something crazy and really green—that could be a really interesting challenge.

E: Maybe Madonna? She has an endless budget and some crazy style!

WE’D LOVE TO SEE THOSE PROJECTS! CAN YOU SHARE YOUR TOP DESIGN TRENDS THIS SEASON? J: I don't really believe in trends.

I think if you create a space using main elements that have staying power, you can rotate your decor as trends or times or personal styles change.

E: I try to avoid trends, and go for more of a timeless look.

Trends come and go and it doesn't take long for a space to become dated. However, I have found brass, triangles and animals just about everywhere!

E: Definitely. You need to get to know your designer on a personal level, not just their experience and schooling.

Having a connection with your designer will ensure that you understand each other, and being on the same page is important. If your designer gets you, they'll be able to understand what you want and need in a space.

ARE FILLED WITH TEENY, TINY APARTMENTS. WHEN WORKING WITH LIMITED SQUARE FOOTAGE, HOW DO YOU MAXIMIZE SPACE AND STYLE? J: Keep it simple. I like to keep walls in apartments quite neutral throughout the entire space. It allows the pieces you bring into your tiny box to shine, rather than featuring drywall.

E: Multi functional furniture!

Tables or stools that have storage, tables that double as additional seating, pull out sofas… It's also important to keep a cohesive design throughout small spaces.

TELL US, WHAT ARE THE MOST

COMMON MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE IN THEIR SPACES? J: Over thinking it—let it go or hire someone to think freely for you! I am tired of people thinking there are rules in design.

E: People often hold on to items they don't like because they cost a lot of money, whether they bought it themselves or somehow acquired it. If you don't like a piece, get rid of it!

WHICH QUESTIONS SHOULD SOMEONE ASK WHEN LOOKING TO HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER? J: They should find out what the process is like, to make sure they are comfortable with the

J: In terms of décor, I think just be true to your self... think of interior décor like doing your make up. LET’S START AT THE BEGINNING… CAN YOU SHARE YOUR EARLIEST BEAUTY-RELATED MEMORY? I was 13 years old and my sister Amy was six years old. Amy and I had an imaginary beauty salon in our bedroom where I would be the client and she was the beautician. She would sit me down and do my make-up.

She would tweeze my brows and apply everything from eyeliner to foundation—it was amazing!

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE BROWS THAT MAKES YOUR HEART BEAT A LITTLE FASTER? Oh! My heart always skips a beat when I see a client’s

brow transformation. A brow transformation can be in one session or over a few months, but in the end it’s just so amazing to see the difference a brow shape can make to someone’s face! I just love the way brows accentuate facial features and make our clients look even more beautiful than they already are. In other words, I fall in love with their brows and can’t stop gushing about them!

WITH GOOD REASON! WHAT ARE YOUR SKIN CARE OR MAKEUP MUST-HAVES? For skin care, my must haves are a gentle, natural toner, cleanser, and moisturizer. For makeup, a good paraben-free foundation, lipstick, and brow makeup completes my look.

WE LIKE THE SIMPLICITY. DO YOU HAVE ANY PERSONAL BEAUTY ICONS? Not really—I believe that everyone is beautiful. However, my sister Amy really inspires me because she truly believes in taking care of yourself, inside and out.

Learn about and embrace your natural facial features and brow shape—you’re beautiful in your own way.

DON’T:

Over-tweeze your brows, especially close to the brow line or arch—it’s hard for them to grow back as we grow older.

knows all about taking chances and following your heart. In 2010, the Theatre and Performance graduate and South African native left her friends and familiar comforts behind to visit family in Vancouver and pursue an acting career. It’s safe to say that the risk paid off; amongst roles in several upcoming independent films, Jodi most notably plays the wealthy, free-spirited Gladys Witham on Global TV’s BOMB GIRLS. Now in it’s second season, the award-winning WWII drama averages 1.4 million viewers and, with trailblazing characters like Gladys, encourages women to challenge the status quo. Eloquent, thoughtful, and a complete sweetheart, Jodi, like her 1940’s counterpart, is the kind of girl you want to know. While splitting her time between L.A. and Toronto makes it a challenge to feel settled, Jodi’s not one to complain. In true Framework Girl style, she has plenty of tips for feeling at home wherever she rests her head. After a busy week promoting BOMB GIRLS, Jodi gave us a tour of her favourite Toronto neighbourhood while sharing her thoughts on chasing dreams, making new friends, and living a passionate life.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR CHILDHOOD IN CAPE TOWN… I was born in Hermanus, which is a small fishing village outside of Cape Town. My family moved to a banana farm for the first few years of my life, and then back to Cape Town when I was three or four. I consider Cape Town my home because that’s really where my memories started. My childhood was amazing; I think it’s fun to be the youngest sibling—I’m the youngest of three—and my brother and my sister are five and six years older than me so I had pals to look up to from the beginning. I was very outdoorsy and sporty; because South Africa is so warm all the time, my childhood was really defined by playing outdoors and using my imagination.

GROWING UP, DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE AN ACTOR? I did. I feel like there hasn’t been one “aha” moment, but initially I just knew that I wanted to be on stage. When I was three or four years old, my family took me to see a live ballet—Swan Lake I think— and I was just unbelievably entranced by it all. Right after that I started taking dance and playing the violin; I just knew I wanted to be involved in that world. While I shared my time between singing, acting and playing an instrument until I was eighteen, I remember at eight or nine years old knowing

that acting made me tick the most.

WHEN YOU CAME TO VISIT YOUR FAMILY IN VANCOUVER, WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO STAY AND CALL CANADA HOME? Being close to my family was a big draw, but also things with acting just seemed to start happening in a really natural, encouraging, supportive way.

I wanted to give it a proper go—I knew that six months wasn’t fully exploring what my life could be like in Canada. I followed my nose, and put one

foot in front of the other for as long as it made sense to; the next thing I knew I’d been there for 2 years. I was really happy, I had a great group of friends, and had a lifestyle carved out for myself that I was completely in love with. Vancouver can be a little isolating, but once you crack the mold of some people, Canadians are amazing.

I probably say that too often but they are some of the loveliest people I’ve ever met!

IT’S TRUE, MAKING NEW FRIENDS TAKES TIME! WAS IT HARD TO MOVE YOUR LIFE ACROSS THE WORLD?

It was for sure. Less so now that I have both my feet firmly planted on North American soil, but the heartstrings are the hardest things to detach, and I’m not sure if I ever really will. It helps so much having my family here; they really eased the transition for me, though I still had all the challenges of moving anywhere, like letting go of relying on a group of friends that I’ve had for a really long time. You can’t buy time or experience with people. That has been the biggest challenge for me—finding that sense of comfort from people. It’s nobody’s fault, it’s just a matter framework

of time and shared experience, but it teaches you to find that sense of comfort from yourself and to self-soothe. You also have to learn to rely on people who are new in your life, and that can happen quite quickly if you just put yourself out there.

THAT’S GREAT ADVICE; WHAT DO YOU MISS THE MOST ABOUT SOUTH AFRICA? It’s hard to define, but I think it’s a sensibility that I miss—a way of being that South Africa and the cities themselves encourage. A real spontaneity and zest for life—grabbing the bull by the horns so to speak.

I think it goes hand in hand with being a country that has a high crime rate, and a little bit of a constant threat. Everyone lives with a certain amount of abandon, and carpe diem if you will, and that’s hard to teach and hard to find in places that are a lot more secure or safe and organized, where things run like clockwork.

IS IT DIFFICULT TO SETTLE IN ANYWHERE WHEN YOU’RE CONSTANTLY TRAVELLING BETWEEN L.A. AND TORONTO FOR WORK? Oh my goodness, yeah I think that’s the greatest challenge.

You have to become a bit of a figurative backpacker or gypsy!

I bounce around where the work is and where it makes sense to be, which definitely makes romantic relationships and feeling grounded a challenge, but I thank my lucky stars that

COVER GIRL I get to travel so much and experience what it’s like to live in a lot of cities.

WE CAN CERTAINLY IMAGINE! DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR MAKING A NEW PLACE FEEL LIKE HOME? I’ve gotten in the habit of bringing a few framed photographs, or a couple of books with me wherever I go, just so I have some familiar things around me. I’ve also figured out how to decorate cheaply and temporarily, whether it’s with flowers and little succulents or just making my surroundings feel like me. I find that cooking where you’re living and spending time in that place helps make it feel like home too. If you’re constantly just using your space as a place to rest your head at the end of the day, it tends to stay feeling temporary. Invest a little bit of time in it and your space will feel like a safe place, which I think is the whole reason to call somewhere your home.

THAT’S GREAT ADVICE! LET’S SWITCH GEARS A BIT—AS AN ACTOR, HAVE YOU EVER DOUBTED YOURSELF? HOW DO YOU RECOVER FROM THAT? Oh my goodness, I think it happens like once a week!

I sometimes go through spells of feeling like acting is kind of silly and superfluous and thinking, “What am I contributing to the world by pursuing such an individual

career that can be seen as a bit of a selfish pursuit?” But then I remember that I just love it and I love telling the stories, and that storytelling has been around since the beginning of time. There’s a real place for storytelling in society, as long as we keep striving to tell stories we care about and stories that make sense to us. Even if one line I say in one film in my whole career makes someone feel something and reflect on his or her own life then I really do think that’s a great thing.

YOUR CHARACTER ON BOMB GIRLS, GLADYS WHITHAM, IS NO STRANGER TO PUSHING BOUNDARIES AND FOLLOWING HER HEART; DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH THIS? Definitely. I’m not always as brave as Gladys, so I feel from time to time that I get to live vicariously through her, which is kind of neat. What she’s doing in 1944 is crazy courageous and really quite risky, and we watch her deal with the consequences of that throughout season two.

For me, I think there’s both a service and disservice to living in 2013; it’s quite easy to get lazy and not do anything about stuff you feel strongly about, and it’s overwhelming how much there is to feel strongly about. That said, we also have amazing opportunities because it’s not so shocking to have strong opinions anymore.

TELL US, WHAT’S THE BIGGEST LEAP OF FAITH YOU’VE EVER TAKEN? That’s a good question! Maybe coming out to Canada—I felt pretty clueless about the film industry. My degree is in theatre and I had done a little bit of film in South Africa, but only just the tiniest taste of it. My family is not in the entertainment business; we’re a family mainly of medical practitioners, so I felt totally in the dark. Even though I did a lot of research on my own and hoped that things would work out for the best, I was fully prepared to come squealing home with my tail between my legs a few months later!

BUT YOU LEAPT ANYWAYS, AND THANKFULLY IT’S WORKED IN YOUR FAVOUR! I guess I’ve probably been kind of naïve and optimistic most of my life, just in thinking that if I keep working really hard, keep putting my heart on the line and keep doing this for the right reasons that things will just work out. I’ve always felt that. I sort of live with my head in the clouds, but I also think that’s benefited me because I just jump in and hope that things will be okay.

HOW HAS LIFE CHANGED SINCE BOMB GIRLS WAS RENEWED FOR A SECOND SEASON? Professionally, a lot I think.

I get to be in L.A. for a few months, which I don’t think would have happened otherwise.

Before Bomb Girls I had never been to Toronto; now I’ve lived here twice and I’ve really fallen in love with this city too.

IT’S A BIT OF A SNOWBALL EFFECT! WHAT ABOUT PERSONALLY? Personally things haven’t changed that drastically.

I’m still exactly who I was beforehand, and it doesn’t change how I live Monday

to Sunday. Halfway through the first season I realized that despite having just landed what I might have told someone was my dream job a few years back, I still come home at the end of the day facing the same demons I’ve always faced with the same challenges on my plate. Those things don’t go away when you realize your dreams.

THAT’S A VERY GOOD REMINDER—EVERYTHING TAKES WORK. WHEN DO YOU FEEL MOST AT EASE OR IN YOUR ELEMENT? When I’m most prepared. I learned very early on that the

fun really happens when you are so prepared that instead of worrying about the structure and the analysis and the lines, you can just play with the character. That coupled with people that you work with.

Every now and then this special thing will happen when the director, the crew, and your fellow actors all align; it’s like the most magical thing on the planet when that happens.

JODI’S TOP 3 TIPS FOR:

LIVING A PASSIONATE LIFE 1. EXPLORE AND UNDERSTAND

WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL—EVEN MOMENTARILY—BLISSFUL.

Have a couple go-to things that you know will bring you pretty close to joy or bliss, however long you do them for.

ESTABLISH A ROUTINE FOR CHECKING IN WITH YOURSELF.

Whether it’s first thing in the morning or last thing in the day, take a quiet moment to see how you’re doing and see what you need, and then really listen to yourself and fulfill whatever your needs are. Maybe you need more downtime, or time with friends, maybe you need to go out and laugh or be a bit crazy for a while, but if you have a way to check in with yourself you’re always operating from the heart and you’re always feeding your soul.

is driven by story and amazing writing. For me, it’s always about the script, the people you get to work with, and the experience. The only thing you can really control on a project is how much fun you have with it. I’m mildly obsessed with the director Mike Mills—I think working on whatever he does next would be my dream project right now. Or, oh man, I would give my eyeteeth to work on a project with Paul Thomas Anderson, or the Coen brothers, or Terrence Malick!

WE’LL DEFINITELY BE WAITING TO SEE THOSE COLLABORATIONS. IF YOU WEREN’T ACTING, WHAT KIND OF CAREER WOULD YOU PURSUE?

DEVELOP A REALLY KEEN SENSE Of CURIOSITY.

I’d like to go back to school to learn more about human rights and development. I touched on that very briefly in Anthropology in university and I was madly in love with it. I also really loved working in the hospitality industry, and I would be very content running a tiny little café and living above it. There’s this place in Vancouver that I just love, Le Marché St. George; the family who owns it lives within the house where the market and café are, and that’s delightful to me. It’s this simplicity that I could definitely get into.

If you stay interested and curious about the world and about people and food and life and time and what’s going on in our culture, life will be interesting and you’ll always be able to find something you’re passionate about.

I’m playing a lot of ukulele down in L.A. because I’ve been living with two very musical friends in this crazy, commune-esque house. My friend Noah plays the piano and the accordion, and Carlyn plays the ukulele and sings, so the three of us have been playing a lot together. The other cool thing about being in LA is that there are so many accessible little hikes you can go on; I’ve been walking and getting outside a lot which is easy to do here with the constant sunshine. I’ve also been doing a lot of yoga—I just can’t get enough of it, I think I might be addicted!

WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND OFF? It would start off with a yoga

class, then a farmer’s market, and then some downtime in the afternoon. Later I might cook dinner for a bunch of friends.

Sunday would be filled with a lot of relaxation, maybe going for a hike, and spending time reading a really good book or connecting with myself for a little bit. On Sunday night I’d go out to watch a film. That would be the best…

A LITTLE BIRDIE TOLD US YOU’RE A PRETTY GOOD COOK; DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE DISH TO SERVE COMPANY? I don’t really have a go-to. I’m a big recipe blog reader—I probably spend way too much time looking at them! But, I love cooking seasonally, especially going to farmer’s markets,

getting a bunch of stuff, and then figuring out from those ingredients what I can make.

I make a really good flatbread, and a really good vegetable tart.

I also love to cook outdoors, so grilling some fish and making a really delicious salad—at the moment I’m completely obsessed with wilted greens.

SOUNDS DELICIOUS! WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR HOSTING A SUCCESSFUL DINNER PARTY? I think group dynamic is very important. Think about how people will blend together; they don’t have to know one another, but the guest list is very important. Also, be super prepared so you don’t feel stressed as people are arriving.

COVER GIRL Give yourself lots of time to prepare food. And then I just love—though I probably go a little too far sometimes— decorating and vamping things up a little bit so the space looks more festive than usual.

Flowers, candles, maybe a great centerpiece, cloth napkins, nice cutlery… I geek out on these things!

OUR KIND OF GAL—YOUR DINNER PARTIES SOUND FANTASTIC! LASTLY, THE FRAMEWORK GIRL DREAMS BIG AND WITH ABANDON. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN YOUR FUTURE? I want a lot of things, and I’m not sure how to marry them all. I would love to have an old fashioned girl’s dream: find someone to share my life with and maybe eventually have a family. I’d also like to have the support and the freedom— financial and creative—to pursue what I really want to do, which would be to work on a few films a year and maybe do some side projects of my own. Really just exploring what it means to be alive within that kind of framework.
