From a tour of British Columbia’s South Okanagan wine region (a quick hop, skip and jump away from our hometown, Vancouver), to a sunny Cuban retreat that will force you to relax and unwind, to the hidden gems of Paris you won’t find in any guidebook, all that’s left is booking your vacation time. Equally well-travelled are July’s featured women, Kathleen Ong of Wantering.com, and Treana Peake of Obakki (our cover girl). BOOK CLUB A CHANGE OF SCENERY

EVERY MONTH WE CHOOSE THREE MUST-READ BOOKS, FROM RECENT RELEASES TO OLD FAVOURITES, THAT WOULD FIT INTO ANY FRAMEWORK GIRL’S BOOK CLUB. IT’S JUST ONE MORE EXCUSE TO GET TOGETHER WITH FRIENDS OVER SWEET TREATS AND COCKTAILS!

by Sara Constantineau

Responsibilities seem a little less crucial in the

summer months. Maybe it’s a holdover from our school days or maybe we just want to get away to enjoy the weather. It’s the perfect time of year to step out of your shell and get some perspective by seeing something new. Whether it’s in the next town over or across the world, going somewhere you’ve never been can be the best way to clear your mind and figure out who you really are. These three picks share the basic idea that sometimes you have to leave home to know where you actually belong.

TIGER EYES BY JUDY BLUME

4/5

THE STORY

After Davey’s father is killed in a senseless burglary, her flighty mother moves the high schooler and her younger brother from Atlantic City to her sister-in-law’s place in New Mexico. Depressed and alone, Davey begins forming strong ties with Wolf, a young man she met while exploring the nearby canyon, and tries to forge a new life where she doesn’t have to carry around the sorrowful burden of her family’s tragedy.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

Judy Blume has been the voice of a generation for decades. As a writer for young adults before YA was considered a genre, her stories speak both to adolescents and anyone who can relate to that brief but poignant time of life. Tiger Eyes is one of her greatest examples of a coming-of-age story where the most dramatic personal change can happen with no one else noticing.

BOOK CLUB

THE SUN ALSO RISES

4/5

BY ERNEST HEMINGWAY

THE STORY

Jake Barnes is an American in Paris surrounded by fellow Yanks and Brits living, flirting, drinking and working amongst the glittering streets of the famed European capital. He is also in love with the promiscuous Lady Brett Ashley. Along with a group of fellow expats, they travel to see the running of the bulls in Pamplona, and tensions start to rise in the closely-knit group.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

Based on Hemingway’s own trip to Spain, this thoughtful view on the so-called Lost Generation proves that some things don’t change when you travel with friends. Hemingway’s trademark brevity is an effective vehicle for bringing the transient nature of travel to life. All the minute details that seem more important when you are away come together to paint an accurate picture of life as an expat far from home.

BEST FOR: SIPPING SANGRIA AT SUNSET

ON THE ROAD BY JACK KEROUAC

3.5 / 5

THE STORY

On the cusp of a broken marriage, Salvatore Paradise begins a chaotic, haphazard journey across the United States to try to figure out what he really wants. Inspired the carefree attitude of his friend Dean, his three years of travel take him thousands of miles zigzagging across America to see if he can really ditch the responsible way of life for the seemingly endless possibilities of the open road.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

This 1950s classic is a quintessential roman à clef. Like Harriet the Spy noting the actions of all her peers, Kerouac is an outsider looking in on his group of acquaintances, only these characters aren’t fictional. While the laissezfaire stream of consciousness prose will prove tiresome to some readers, it captures the essence of the quintessential road trip with its requisite spontaneity and surprises.

DIY TRAVEL ART

Looking for a fun and inexpensive way to create your own artwork and savor precious travel memories? With an artistic approach and an eye for design, you can easily create beautiful displays BY AMELIA EICHHOLZ of vacation photos around your abode.

If you enjoy taking in new cultures, visiting unusual sights and exploring different food, then why not have those experiences also present in your home. Use these three simple tips to add a personal touch to your space and surround yourself with special memories.

1. POINT OF VIEW While digitally rummaging through your vacation photographs, decide which images to choose based on specific angles that capture an artistic perspective. Whether you have a shot from the top of a mountain or from a boat, it's important to have the photo be not only aesthetically pleasing, but an interesting view as well! // RIGHT: IMAGE VIA HOUSE OF TURQUOISE //

CULTURE & LIVING

2. SIZE MATTERS

1.

Larger is usually better when it comes to hanging artwork. Take the time to have your photos enlarged to the best size for the wall space and make sure the frame has a minimal feel. I usually choose a natural wood or white painted wood frame. The frame should always enhance the piece, instead of dominating it.

3.

4.

3. COOL & COLLECTED Another fun way to bring your adventures back home is to collect vintage postcards while you travel and use these to create a gallery wall of fond memories. Complete the look by having each postcard framed with an antique gold frame to add personality. For an even more eclectic feel, try a collection of ticket stubs, menus, and other travel mementos. // TOP LEFT: IMAGE VIA SF GIRL BY BAY // BOTTOM LEFT: IMAGE VIA LONNY MAGAZINE // RIGHT: IMAGE VIA MIMOSA LANE //

Jody Rebak // Emery Lifestyle Management WRITTEN BY MICHELLE KEONG PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMIE LAUREN HODGE

MOVE OVER, JARVIS. THERE’S A NEW PERSONAL ASSISTANT IN TOWN. AND SHE BRINGS A TOUCH OF LUXURY TO EVERYDAY LIVING. ENTER JODY REBAK, FOUNDER OF EMERY LIFESTYLE MANAGEMENT, A BOUTIQUE ON-CALL, PERSONAL ASSISTANCE AND ERRAND-RUNNING COMPANY. “Part of what we do is help people devote more and save the best of themselves for the things that they really care about,” says Rebak, who founded the Vancouver-based company in 2011. “So much of the time people deal with their "to-do's" and then everything else like family, friends, and the things they really want to be doing get what's left over. We help them do everything that needs to be done with style, sophistication and elegance.” Rebak’s love of people and lists – and the perpetual need to stay busy – makes this line of work a perfect fit. From coordinating handymen and stocking fridges with healthy foods, to planning events and preparing hand-written thank-you cards, Rebak is fueled by a passion for the little things. “I love doing the things that a lot of people don’t,” says Rebak, 26, who previously worked in the marketing and client services sectors. “For example, people avoid moving because it’s so encompassing and it’s so draining. I think that’s one of the things that we really like to do. It’s quite methodical. We sit down, we talk about what needs to be done, and we’ll just take care

And those who require regular assistance can opt for a monthly retainer fee. “Engaging Emery Lifestyle is really accessible. It’s not just something for the Housewives of Vancouver or the super elite,” says Rebak, who co-chairs Vancouver Aquarium’s Toast to the Coast, an annual fundraiser that supports the organization’s conservation and education programs. “It’s tailored for people who have a busy life, who enjoy luxury, and who enjoy the little touches. We try and make it accessible for everyone.” A few years ago, it was Rebak’s involvement with

Toast to the Coast that sparked her career change. En route to picking up a silent auction item, she recalls thinking: “I would much rather just do errands than go back to the office.” This “aha moment” coupled with a sound business plan and discipline gave rise to a growing enterprise. “I think a lot of people expect it to happen overnight. But realistically, you have a little bit of experience, you have to know yourself, and you have to work in other industries mostly to figure out what you don’t like in order to figure out what you like,” says Rebak, who prides herself on making people’s lives easier and more enjoyable. “You really need to follow your passion and not just a pay check.” fw

tasting: summer whites W R ITT E N BY S O P H I E C O L L I N S

This month, the Framework Girl relishes in travelling to new places and collecting new experiences. The Okanagan wine region is a stunning place to visit all year round, but it’s especially wonderful during the summer when you can cruise from one winery to the next with your windows down and your sundress on. Read on for the best wines of Sophie’s Okanagan winery tour (and don’t miss the corresponding weekend getaway guide on page 30 ).

everyday table $

dinner party

TINHORN CREEK GEWURZTRAMINER 2012 $18.49

Immediately flooding your senses with apricot, peach, nectarine, papaya, and ripe mango aromas, this off dry wine is bursting with lemon, lime and grapefruit flavours. The grapes were grown on rocky terroir in a cool climate, which gives the wine a nice acidity. The Tinhorn Creek Gewurztraminer is a delicious companion to an easy cheese plate filled with white cheddar and spicy red pepper jelly.

$$

LA STELLA VIVACE PINOT GRIGIO $25.00

Just released, this is an incredible wine for the summer season. With hints of rose and green apple on the nose, the flavours are round. Peach and stone fruit shine through, while the wine’s floral notes linger on your palate. This Pinot Grigio pairs beautifully with your favourite roast chicken recipe or grilled fish in a citrus marinade.

special occasion $$$

LE VIEUX PIN SAUVIGNON BLANC 2012 $35.00

Sister to La Stella winery, Le Vieux Pin is equally as charming and beautiful. This Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing take on the varietal, full of stone fruit and tropical flavours with a nice acidity. The wine pops in your mouth and will fully complement any summer salads you can dream up, or as Le Vieux Pin suggests, “Oysters on the half shell topped with lemon and pepper.”

Try to push your boundaries this month: if you love Riesling, try a new Gewurztraminer… if you love rosé, try a Sauvignon Blanc or a Pinot Grigio. With these picks, we promise you can’t go wrong! FOR MORE WINES AND TIPS,VISIT SIPSAVOURSHARE.COM

The Qwam Qwmt 2011 Riesling Icewine makes for a great hostess gift. At $60.00, it’s a little more special than an everyday table wine and pairs beautifully with dessert – we suggest peach pie, a dessert that will enhance the stone fruit and apricot flavours of this wine.

CULTURE & LIVING

1 1 : 30AM // #1: LASTELLA W I N E TA S T I N G Start the day at LaStella, one of the most beautiful wineries you’ll ever have the pleasure of visiting. Committed to providing quality wines, LaStella captures la dolce vita of the Okanagan, while their wines – named after Italian musical notes as a nod to Tuscany – show an impeccable attention to detail. Severine Pinte is the in-house winemaker for LaStella and sister-winery Le Vieux Pin; having trained and worked in France, Severine brings a joie de vivre to her wine making, and believes in the health of the grapes above all else. She is extremely passionate and this really shines through in her wines.

M U S T- T RY W I N E S AT L A S T E L L A The 2012 LaStellina rosé

is filled with citrus and floral flavours, and boasts a fuller body than one would expect of a summer-sipper. We recommend pairing this wine with spicy summer dishes or a variety of your favourite cheeses.

The Fortissimo 2010

is outstandingly flavourful, and is made using four grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. Aged for 16-18 months in oak, it tastes of blackberry, pepper, and big tannins. Absolutely incredible alongside a delicious steak, we couldn’t resist picking up a bottle of this wine to bring home!

sunday cont'd. 1 : 0 0PM // #2: TINHORN CR E E K W I N E TA S T I N G Tinhorn Creek has 150 acres of vines throughout Southern Okanagan. M U S T- T RY W I N E S AT T I N H O R N C R E E K The 2010 Merlot is a very approachable red. Light ruby in colour, with aromas of blackberry, blueberry, plum and cherry, this wine is soft, well balanced, and easy to drink. Everyone will enjoy its jam and stone fruit flavours.

The 2009 Oldfield Series 2Bench red

is named for Sandra Oldfield, Tinhorn’s winemaker and CEO. The 2Bench red is a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Aged to perfection in oak barrels, it is full-bodied and rich red in colour. The 2011 Ava Viognier/Roussanne/Marsanne blend is another favourite.

A traditional French blend, Ava has received rave reviews, earning over 91 points by many critics. The nose is filled with an aromatic bouquet of honeysuckle, stone fruit and white flowers. 1O1 ION THE MODERN GIRL'S GUIDE TO FINDING YOUR

SWIMWEAR PERSONALITY When it comes to days spent sunning at the beach or playing poolside, your style getting to and from your lounging destination is just as important as the swimwear itself. We suggest taking stock of your activities for the day: are you going to be tossing around the beach ball? Heading out for ice cream? Meeting friends on a patio for some après sun cocktails? Whether you're staying at home this summer or heading off on a fabulous vacation, we’ll show you how to channel your beach babe personality.

SPORTY WESTCOAST CHIC If you love fun in the sun and are more likely to be tossing a Frisbee than lounging poolside, we suggest a chic, sporty look. Keep your bathing suit playful with a pop of print and don't feel the need to be all matched up. Try mixing your printed top with a solid bottom in a coordinating hue to be a real standout at the volleyball courts. OFF-SAND STYLE To maintain your sporty vibe when heading for gelato, layer on an easy, flowing skirt in a neutral colour. Add a cute pair of slip on Vans, a relaxed ponytail, and casual jewelry; this is all you need to go from beach to boardwalk.

TRENDY HAMPTONS STYLE If lounging poolside is where you see yourself on a hot summer day, take a cue from the Hamptons’ classic stylebook and add a trendy twist. For an element of glamour, we recommend trying swimwear with metallic accents. Ever the classic, white looks amazing against sun-kissed skin—but for an updated look, keep some colour by opting for a pretty hued bottom with matching metallic hardware. OFF-SAND STYLE In order to go straight from the pool to sipping mojitos at the yacht club, layer on a pair of high-waisted black shorts and a beautiful white crocheted sweater. For a punch of colour, choose a pair of bright wedges and a standout beaded necklace – a fabulous pair of sunnies are an obvious must.

Bathing suit: L*Space; Shorts, Propaganda $65, Sweater: Propaganda $85 (both from Plenty); Shoes: Miz Mooz "Katniss" shoes $140; Necklace: Capsule Peace necklace $175 by Katami Designs; Sunglasses: model's own.

MODERN HIPPIE CALI GIRL If your IPod playlist is keeping you in a Coachella state of mind, don't fight it! The modern hippie beach look is a Framework favorite. This updated take on a tie-dye bikini will embrace your inner flower child. To add personality, why wait until after the beach to accessorize? A beautiful beaded necklace along with a sterling silver cuff and ring will only enhance your cool chick vibe. OFF-SAND STYLE As you head to meet friends at your favorite patio for beer and fish tacos, throw on soft layers and add a bit of texture; we absolutely love these white crocheted shorts paired with a light button up blouse. CULTURE & LIVING

rom the time I was five (shortly after I realised I couldn't move to Fragglerock when I was old enough to live on my own), I've dreamt of packing my bags and running off to Europe without so much as turning back to give Canada one last look. I have been equal parts lucky and determined; last September, I left behind my Vancouver life for a year in Paris' le Marais. It was the realisation of my biggest dream, formed as a naive teenager on a school trip to France, and the past year has been everything I wished for; wonderful, whimsical, filled with fashion and travel adventures and an endless array of pastries. Like I said, I've been lucky. I have spent the equivalent of two years of my life in Europe – most of that time in Paris. Most people get one chance to see the stunning French capital. At best, they have two weeks to fully take in the wonders of the French capital, and no matter how much sleep they give up, it's simply not enough time. I remember that feeling well; I was fifteen on my first visit to the city of light, boarding an airplane without my parents for the first time, dressed in bright white runners and a new fleece jacket bought especially for the

voyage. It was a school trip and I was the youngest traveler but by far the most eager – maybe a bit too eager. I had read every guide printed by Fodor's and Frommer's and Lonely Planet and I had a list of everything I needed to see. {I should mention that this didn't particularly endear me to my classmates, a group of close-knit seniors who planned to spend as much of the ten-day trip as possible partying to celebrate their upcoming graduation.} When our Air Canada jet touched down at Charles de Gaulle Airport, I spent my first exhilarating moments in the city of light just taking it all in – and then I remembered; this first visit to Paris might well be my last and I didn't have a second to waste. I had three days to live like a true Parisian and it began right then. I saw the Eiffel Tower on that trip; I wandered the Louvre and ordered a jam-filled crepe from a street vendor. And, I was so exhausted from rushing to see every must-see attraction that those experiences are as much as I remember. I returned home with five rolls of film, largely uncertain of what I had seen, done and photographed. I knew I had to go back. I had seen the framework

63

CULTURE & LIVING same Paris that I could have watched in a half-hour film advertising tours of France’s capital, and I wasn't satisfied. I knew there had to be more to it. In my four subsequent sojourns to Paris, the French have taught me two important life lessons. The first is not to rush; the world will wait. The second is that wherever you are right now, it is the best place you could possibly be. By slowing down, throwing away maps and eschewing fixed itineraries, I have discovered a city behind the city. Beneath the veneer of pristine white Haussmannian architecture is a Paris with an eclectic hidden charm that cannot be seen from the top of the Eiffel Tower or while pushing through the throngs at the Louvre to catch a glimpse of Da Vinci's Mona Lisa. When you're planning a trip to the French capital, throw away your guidebooks and start thinking like a Parisian; no matter what any travel writer says, the only attractions worth a visit are the ones that truly interest you. Whether you have two days or two weeks, the most meaningful way to visit Paris is to wander its narrow streets and to sit in cafes, watching the world pass by. That's how you will discover your Paris.

The FRENCH have taught me two important life lessons. The first is not to rush; the world will wait. The second is that wherever you are right now, it is the best place you could possibly be.

My Paris is a quiet city of treelined boulevards, narrow alleys and unpretentious cafes... these are just a few of my favourite spots to:

S TAY

1

HÔTEL CARON LE BEAUMARCHAIS

12, RUE VIEILLE DU TEMPLE

Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, author of the famous play Le Mariage de Figaro, once lived just up the street from this 19-room boutique hotel which recreates the 18th century atmosphere of Caron de Beaumarchais’ era with impeccable period decor, pretty floral wallpaper and a most inviting turquoise façade.

2

HÔTEL DES GRANDES ÉCOLES 75, RUE CARDINAL LEMOINE

A rustic French country house in the middle of the city, this lovely pink hotel sits on Saint Genevieve Hill in Paris' Latin Quarter. With 51 quiet rooms, it's the perfect place to retreat to after a day of sightseeing.

3

HÔTEL LES JARDINS DU MARAIS 74, RUE AMELOT

Just outside the bustling heart of le Marais, this modern hotel appears deceptively small from the black marble lobby, but opens onto a magnificent courtyard surrounded by twelve individual hotel buildings, each one named for a famous French artist.

1

MUSÉE CARNAVALET 23, RUE DE SEVIGNE

This museum is dedicated to the history of Paris – a collection of quirky artifacts, from prehistoric canoes to old store fronts and revolutionary banners, is housed within two former homes, the Hôtel Carnavalet and the Hôtel Le Peletier de Saint Fargeau. Admission is free, and on a sunny day, it’s worth a visit even if all you do is sit in the manicured courtyard.

2

PONT NEUF Paris' "new bridge" is in fact the oldest in the city; construction began in 1578 and the bridge was officially inaugurated in 1607. It connects Île de la Cité, a large island in the middle of the Seine River, to both sides of the city. And if you stand in the middle of it, you can see for miles.

CULTURE & LIVING

3

RUE CRÉMIEUX

4

GALÉRIE VIVIENNE

Paris is a meticulously planned city with a distinct aesthetic, its buildings almost all made from a creamy yellow stone, with an occasional red brick apartment in the mix... Except for one cheerful street in the 11th arrondissement, rue Crémieux, a single block of parallel row houses painted bright shades of yellow, blue, coral and even lime. Take a walk here to feel like you've gone, if only temporarily, on holiday within the capital.

Napoleon's Paris has been conserved in this lovely passageway, which saw its heyday in the early 1800s when its location between the Palais Royale and the Grand Boulevards made it a place to see and be seen – while doing practical things like going to the tailor and picking up wine. That glory faded during the Belle Époque, when the city's prestigious shops moved to the Champs-Elysées, but the Galérie is quietly coming to life again, with restaurants, designer stores and a charming used bookshop open for business along the corridor. framework

E AT

1

LA PÂTISSERIE DES RÊVES 111, RUE LONGCHAMP The quiet pastry shop and tea room is a labour of love by Chef Philippe Conticini, who made it his goal to take typical French pastries available all over Paris and distill them into their best possible form. Children are always the guests of honour in this pink-and-white pastry paradise, and adults are encouraged not to act their age, particularly when it comes to ordering seconds. And the pastries are so good, you'll want to do exactly that!

2

L’ÉCLAIR DE GÉNIE 14, RUE PAVÉE After years of languishing in the shadow of macarons, éclairs are having a moment in Paris, and the best ones to be found are at L’Éclair de Génie, where unique, mouthwatering flavours like salted butter caramel and raspberry-passion fruit breathe new life into an old favourite.

CULTURE & LIVING

3

AFGHANI

16, RUE PAUL-BERT When you're on your way to Basilique SacrĂŠ-Coeur, this tiny restaurant is worth the detour, particularly for vegetarians. Authentic Afghan dishes like aushak and borani are served by Afghan immigrants in a small, lovingly decorated space. The food has elements of Greek, Indian and Persian cuisine but stands on its own two feet. Afghani is a must for foodies and adventurous eaters.

4

LE BAR AU METRE 38, BOULEVARD VOLTAIRE This typical neighbourhood brasserie was recently taken over by a group of young friends, who have transformed it from the restaurant everyone loved to hate into the perfect spot for a casual evening meal. The new menu features unpretentious favourites including sandwiches, burgers and pizza, and a soundtrack that almost always includes The Pixies.

1

SHINE 15, RUE DE POITOU This lavender-painted boutique is a Parisian institution – they were the first in the city to carry Marc by Marc Jacobs, and they remain pioneers of international fashion, carrying popular labels like Acne and Chloe, as well as French designers Carven and Repetto. Also, their own eponymous in-house label, Shine, is not to be missed.

70

framework

CULTURE & LIVING

2

DELPHINE PARIENTE 8, RUE DE TURENNE The neon pink star on Delphine Pariente's sign draws shoppers in every time; the unusual boutique specialises primarily in jewelry, with a collection of limited edition pieces – each one slightly different so that no two shoppers leave with the same piece – to accompany their classic, customisable engraved pendants. What better souvenir of the city of light than a necklace emblazoned with the words J'adore Paris!

3

COME ON EILEEN 40, RUE DE RIVOLI This small, crowded store nestled at the quiet end of rue de Rivoli is not a vintage store, nor truly a thrift shop. The carefully curated collection consists of a mix of vintage pieces from the 1950s to 1980s and ready-to-wear pieces from recent years. You have to search, but there are wonderful, reasonably priced treasures to find from brands like Chloe, Kenzo, Carven, YSL and even, on a good day, Chanel! fw

STYLE GROWING UP IN EDMONTON, DID YOU ALWAYS HAVE A LOVE FOR FASHION? No! I didn’t really begin my love affair with fashion until I was in university. YOU BEGAN YOUR BA IN ENGLISH AND MEDIA STUDIES WITH THE INTENTION OF BECOMING A JOURNALIST; WHAT ABOUT PUBLIC RELATIONS CAPTURED YOUR INTEREST ENOUGH TO SWITCH CAREER PATHS? I really love to write; it’s one of my great passions. I took a PR class in my third year and it just stuck with me. I love the idea of telling a story about something. I love meeting new people and find that in PR you get a chance to connect with a lot of people you would not necessarily have an opportunity to otherwise. WHEN YOU MOVED TO NEW YORK AFTER GRADUATION, WAS IT EVERYTHING YOU HAD IMAGINED? It was everything. I always describe New York to people in this way: when you’re in New York, you feel the heartbeat of the city by just standing on the street. I lived right in Union Square, so I was lucky enough to experience a really eclectic mix of people.

When you’re in New York, you feel the heartbeat of the city by just standing on the street.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRST JOB IN NYC… I interned at a fashion and lifestyle PR firm straight out of my undergrad. I had the option of working for a pretty well-known PR firm housed in a shiny office tower, or a small, boutique firm downtown. I know I chose the right one – the tiny space in the East Village – when I look at the relationships I still have seven years later with my former colleagues and bosses. I got an opportunity to write and pitch with some amazing mentors, which taught me a lot about the industry. Our clients ranged from streetwear and yoga wear brands to lifestyle companies and hip-hop music events. In retrospect, it was the connections I made, and kept, that have been the

I’ll always remember the summer of 2006 because that ’s when I purchased my bag. I mean, it wasn’t just any bag. My emerald green Balenciaga box bag is still the most beautiful thing I own. I had my eye on it for months and saved and saved, until the day I walked into the store in Chelsea to pick it up. Perhaps only fellow bag-lovers will understand, but I do sleep with my bag next to me, tucked neatly into its dust bag. Wouldn’t you?

most important to me both professionally and personally. SO IT WASN’T THE STEREOTYPICAL “DEVIL WEARS PRADA” EXPERIENCE? My job in New York was not a “Devil Wears Prada” experience, although I have had many Miranda Priestly moments throughout my time in the fashion industry. What I learned, and not just because I re-watch the movie at least a few times a month, is that if you love what you do, it’s not really work anymore. Make sure you are doing something you are truly passionate about and all of the time and effort you put into your work will have a positive effect on your life.

walls and in my high school locker, so moving to London one day was almost a given. I was fortunate enough that my parents took my sister and I travelling at a young age and taught us the value of meeting new people and exploring places. Perhaps they are who I get my sense of fearlessness from in terms of moving to a different city. WERE YOU SURPRISED TO LAND A FANTASTIC FASHION PR JOB IN LONDON SO QUICKLY? Yes! I stepped off the plane in London and had my interview the next day. It was really surreal to spend time working with a team of people who were just as passionate about fashion as I was. It was inspiring.

HOW DID YOUR TIME IN NEW YORK INFLUENCE YOUR MOVE TO LONDON, ENGLAND?

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BIGGEST PINCH-ME MOMENT WHILE ACROSS THE POND…

I had already been in love with New York and London for most of my childhood, with posters of the Statue of Liberty and Big Ben up on my

in garment bags with “Do Not Touch” signs. Fortunately, I was nearby when the fashion director took the garment bags off and I got to see first-hand these beautiful dresses that came straight off the runway after the show. Only a limited number of samples of each had been made for the whole world – it was really surreal. OH, WHAT FASHION DREAMS ARE MADE OF! IT TAKES A LOT OF GUTS TO JUMP ON A PLANE HEADING THREE THOUSAND PLUS MILES AWAY FROM HOME WITHOUT A PLAN! HAS YOUR ADVENTUROUS SPIRIT HELPED YOUR CAREER? It might sound like I don’t have a plan, but if you know anything about me, there’s always some kind of plan! I tend to live in a bit of an organized chaos. I am obsessed with schedules and itineraries, so much so that my friends have inside jokes about it. Yet at the same time, when it comes to travel and work, I like to have an adventurous spirit. I think a sense of spontaneity breeds an open-mind and willingness to take a leap of faith. WHAT BROUGHT YOU BACK TO CANADA? Well, this is home. I’ve been calling Edmonton home for a long time, but after all my moving, Vancouver feels like home the most. I’ll always want to travel and live in different cities, so we’ll see! CAN YOU SHARE THE CHAIN OF EVENTS THAT LED YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW? After I graduated with my MBA from SFU I moved to Toronto without a job in hand. I actually applied for 120 jobs; I would know, I tracked them on an Excel sheet. Of course after all that I got my next job in an elevator. NOW THAT’S A STORY WE’VE GOT TO HEAR! DO TELL… I was moving apartments within the same building and it ended up that the guy who was

After three sweaty hours moving his furniture, I was waiting in the hallway reading my Twitter feed – I was about to go to New York in a few days to volunteer for NYFW. The apartment guy was like, “What are you doing?” I said, “I’m on Twitter trying to figure out which celebrities are going to be at Fashion Week.” He replies, “Oh, you work in fashion?” I said, “No, I don’t have a job but I am trying to find one.” Through some stroke of luck, not only did he used to work in fashion but referred me to his ex-wife who worked also worked in the industry; she became my boss and my dear friend during my time in Toronto. I worked for a fashion brand in account management, buying, sales and design, and got to travel between Toronto and NYC for a year. NOW THAT’S SOME SERIOUS SERENDIPITY! HOW DID YOU FIND WANTERING? Actually, Wantering found me. I moved back to Vancouver last year for job at a social media agency and through a friend’s persuasion (I said I was too busy), started helping with Wantering’s social media. They say the rest is history… I live by the motto “Do what you love,” which Matt our CEO taught me. Now I live, breathe and sleep Wantering; I’m obsessed.

My bucket list is basically a list of my hopes and dreams. I think ever yone should have one! Some highlights include: Live in New York City, London, Toronto and Vancouver by the time I’m 26 years old (check) Go to grad school (check) Learn how to speak French fluently (long way off) Meet Marc Jacobs (sort of, if you include running after him down the streets of Soho)

STYLE LET’S DIVE INTO THE WORLD OF WANTERING; HOW IS THE COMPANY CHANGING THE WAY FASHION LOVERS SHOP ONLINE? We just launched our new fashion search engine on Wantering.com; and yes, it’ll change the way you shop online. You can now discover and buy clothes across dozens of your favourite boutiques, flash sale sites and major retailers all in one place. The inventory is up to date, we make it easy to filter down to only the products that are on sale, and the photos are gigantic. And well, we dare you to find a better place to search for fashion online. As for the curation of products, our algorithm pulls from more than 100 million datapoints from across the social web to surface the hottest products in every category. So that way you’ll always see what’s best first. How can you shop any other way? VERY COOL! IF YOUR PERSONALITY WERE TO BE CAPTURED IN ANY FASHION ITEM, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I have to mention two: my Balenciaga bag for it’s downtown-cool-meets-Parisian-chicness and my mint green and white polka dot Kate Spade iPhone 5 case for my addiction to social media.

It’s really important to understand what your brand stands for, who you’re speaking to, and what your message is.

WAS THERE A LEARNING CURVE GOING FROM A FASHION BRAND TO A FASHION TECHNOLOGY COMPANY? Absolutely! I’m still learning every day; it’s non-stop. The one thing that’s similar is a very definitive brand vision. It’s really important to understand what your brand stands for, who you’re speaking to, and what your message is. AS THE ONLY FEMALE AT WANTERING, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE WORKING DYNAMICS? I work with a team of amazing, hard working, genius core group of six guys. I usually don’t know what they are talking about because I

Between technical terms, various programming languages and systems that have funny names, it’s now an inside joke every time I turn around and ask them to explain. On the flip side, I think they know more than they ever thought they needed to about Anna Wintour’s schedule or what it means for Alexander Wang to helm Balenciaga. THE GUYS WILL SURELY GET A FASHION INDUSTRY EDUCATION! YOU’VE DESCRIBED YOURSELF AS THE IDEAL WANTERING CUSTOMER—THAT MUST BE A BENEFIT TO THE FOUNDERS? I consume fashion every day. Whether I’m buying something online, reading up on the latest fashion news, scrolling down my Twitter feed, or checking out a new blogger, I’m always consuming fashion. Wantering makes shopping online better for everyone, not just those interested in fashion, so it’s great that we cater to a mix of both audiences. A large part of our audience is die-hard fashionistas, so my perspective does help out sometimes! WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING AT A STARTUP? Every day is a different day! You never know what will happen, and that’s the beauty of it. The greatest part of working at a startup is that everyone is passionate about what they do. It’s really motivational and inspiration to work in that type of company culture. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE WITH WANTERING THUS FAR?

I would have to say the Wantering Brunch event we held in New York in May. We had an opportunity to meet bloggers and editors along with people in the tech scene in person, which was really fun. SPLITTING YOUR TIME BETWEEN VANCOUVER AND NEW YORK, YOU MUST BE AN EXPERT PACKER. WHAT ARE YOUR TRAVEL ESSENTIALS? I always make a list of what I plan on wearing on every day of my trip and pack accordingly. As far as essentials for New York: a notebook and pen, a bag full of different types of jewelry, ankle boots or low-heeled shoes I can walk far distances in, iPhone, auxiliary battery pack, laptop, passport, and Balenciaga bag. DO YOU STILL FEEL THE SAME EXCITEMENT NOW WHEN YOU’RE IN NEW YORK AS YOU DID THE FIRST TIME? Yes, it’s just as thrilling as the first time I was there. MANAGING THE PR, MARKETING, AND SOCIAL MEDIA FOR A COMPANY DEVOTED TO FASHION AND SHOPPING SOUNDS LIKE A PRETTY FANTASTIC PLACE TO BE. WHAT DO YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? I’m not even sure where to begin! It really comes back to “Do what you love.” I love that work doesn’t feel like work, but it is hard work – if that makes sense. I love the fashion community that we’ve created and continue to expand with Wantering, and I love the people that I work with both internally, and externally through our Wantering trendsetters and fashion industry friends. LASTLY, CAN YOU TELL US WHAT IS ON THE HORIZON FOR WANTERING? We’ve been asked this question a lot recently, and it’s a bit of a secret. You’ll hear all about it on Twitter so I’ll see you @wantering! fw framework

Fashion-fueled philanthropy is just one extension of

TREANA PEAKE’S well of creativity.

With a lifelong and intense passion to help others, her innovative and authentic storytelling presents international causes and crises to the modern consumer. The vehicle? Treana’s 100% humanitarian company, OBAKKI. The multifaceted foundation uses fashion and photography to generate funds and awareness in order to support sustainable water and education-based projects for communities in urgent need. Where she once felt a gaping disparity between this world in need and a world driven by designer shoes, Treana has found a way to feed the former through the latter.

Read on as we join Obakki’s humble founder behind the scenes for a more intimate view of her life as a designer, philanthropist, wife, and mother.

COVER GIRL BEFORE FOUNDING OBAKKI IN 2005, YOU SPENT MORE THAN A DECADE DOING PHILANTHROPY AND DEVELOPMENT WORK. WHAT LED YOU DOWN THIS PATH? As a child, I was more interested in World Vision commercials than I was in Mr. Gadget – this overwhelming desire to create change and help others has always been a part of me. However, there was one recurring incident from my childhood that really affected me. Year after year, someone would drop off a blank white envelope for my family, and the envelope was always filled with money (which was much-needed at that time in our household). The envelope was always dropped off anonymously – the sheer altruism and selflessness of this act of kindness really stuck with me and influenced my passion in philanthropy. HAD YOU NOT HAD THESE EXPERIENCES, DO YOU THINK YOUR CAREER AND LIFE'S WORK WOULD BE DIFFERENT NOW? No. Even as a child, I was always self-motivated and philanthropy was just a part of me. It’s really been the driving force of my life: as a kid fundraising by putting on a children’s play (which amassed a whopping $30), as a teen organizing fundraiser concerts with my friends, or now as the founder of Obakki Foundation. I feel like my entire life has always been directed toward the ultimate goal of helping others. WHEN DID YOU DEVELOP AN INTEREST IN DESIGN, AND IN FASHION SPECIFICALLY? I’ve always been a creative person and really believe that true creativity is multi-faceted, so while fashion is the outlet in which most of my creative exploration has been articulated, I also love photography, film, art, music… the list goes on and on. YOUR COLLECTIONS AND CAMPAIGNS ARE ROOTED IN CREATIVE STORYTELLING; HAS THIS ALWAYS BEEN A PASSION?

Storytelling is really what drives my creativity. I think the passion for communicating a story comes from my real life experiences in the field, having these tangible moments in which I see impact and change in person. It makes me all the more determined to communicate the story in an engaging and dynamic way – by inspiring more people, I’m ultimately able to drive more awareness to the cause. WHAT PART OF THE DESIGN PROCESS ENERGIZES YOU THE MOST? I love the creative assembly aspect – which I’m currently buried deep in right now as I design Spring/Summer 2014 – but the most fulfilling part of the whole process is when I see the work that is done in the field as a result of our fashion. It’s really and truly using fashion for good, and it’s what feeds my passion and gets me ready to tackle the next collection! AND WHAT PART GIVES YOU THE MOST CHALLENGE? Just finding enough time to get it all done. I’m back and forth from Africa as I go back to check in on the villages we support. Then when I’m in Vancouver, I’m busy operating our foundation, running an international fashion brand and being a mom to my two kids. Also, when I’m back home, I’m always connected to Africa – whether I’m on the phone having business meetings with a South Sudan government official or staying in touch with one of the orphans in Cameroon that I’m extremely close to, I’m still always busy in Africa even when I’m not physically there! TELL US ABOUT THE FIRST TIME YOU WENT TO AFRICA... The first time I went to Cameroon, I was 18 years old and had just sold my car to fund the trip there. It was an incredible and completely different experience; we hiked for three days into the valley where we were building schools and slept outside. We would wake up with the animals and the night’s rainfall quite literally on us and framework

would then venture across the valley, crossing bamboo bridges that would creak and crack under our weight. WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! WHEN DID YOU VISIT SOUTH SUDAN? My first time in South Sudan was three years ago, and I vividly remember landing down on this rough dirt runway. It was unbelievably hot and as I stepped off the plane, I took in the most dry, barren, cracked landscape I had ever seen. I remember seeing thousands of people confined within this one arid field and thinking to myself that if only we could access the beds of water under all this dry earth, we could help them. And that’s exactly what we’ve sought out to do – the improvements these communities have experienced after gaining clean water access are just phenomenal. CLEAN WATER IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING WE TAKE FOR GRANTED HERE IN CANADA. BEYOND THE EXTREME NEED, WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE CONTINENT THAT PULLS YOU BACK TIME AND AGAIN? I’ve traveled all over the world and for whatever reason, there’s just something about Africa in particular that gets inside you. The customs, the people, the villages… they just feel like an extension of home to me now. Granted, I’ve been there around 30 times, but there is something very special about that continent that has become an intertwined aspect of my identity. It’s just a completely integrated part of my life now. Other than just feeling personally at home in Africa, the personal relationships I’ve formed there have been some of the most astounding and life-altering ones of my life. These people are such important aspects of my life that even my kids could name every orphan’s name in this one orphanage I’ve been supporting for over 15 years. A lot of people might think this is just a business and that you get paid to go to Africa, but I’m not paid to go – I truly care about these people, the communities and what improvements have been

made there. WHERE IN THESE TWO SEPARATE WORLDS – FASHION AND PHILANTHROPY – DOES YOUR DRIVE AND PASSION COME FROM? In short, it really just comes down to being able to make a difference. That’s what ultimately feeds my passion in both spheres of my work. NOW CALLED THE OBAKKI FOUNDATION, YOUR COMPANY IS ABLE TO EXPAND AND EXTEND IT'S CREATIVE AND HUMANITARIAN REACH. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO MELD FASHION, CREATIVITY, AND PHILANTHROPY TOGETHER? I sometimes have this overwhelming feeling when I’m in the field. I’ll be sitting in a village under a tree, talking and laughing with a chief whose village finally has access to clean water, and all of a sudden it will dawn on me that in order to make this happen, a whole group of physically separated but cause-bound people had to come together. The clothing has to be created by our production team, our marketing team has to communicate the story, people have to buy the clothes, the money has to then be sent to Africa, our field team has to implement and monitor everything… it’s really just an incredibly collaborative thing. To see a village that once only had cracked earth now thrive with a lush green garden is really the ultimate reminder of this amazing collaboration. IT MUST BE A TRULY BEAUTIFUL SIGHT. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE WANTING TO ADOPT A HUMANITARIAN OR PHILANTHROPIC ELEMENT INTO THEIR BUSINESS OR PERSONAL LIFE? Just do it. If you’re inspired, do it, because no matter what you do, you will do some good. If you need any other reason to get started, just know that your life will be more enriched because of philanthropy. There have been heaps of studies done on the basis that people tend to report higher feelings of happiness when they can spend

their money or help others rather than engaging in self-serving acts, and it’s so true. THOUGH OBAKKI HAS LONG BEEN USING 100% OF ITS NET PROFITS TOWARDS HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS, THIS HAS ONLY RECENTLY BEEN ANNOUNCED PUBLICLY. TELL US ABOUT THE RESPONSE FROM CONSUMERS AND THE FASHION INDUSTRY... People are happy to buy something that has some good attached to it so the response has been amazing. Too many times, people give money and never see anything in return, so I think one thing we really give our customers is a true connection to the cause and to the communities they help by purchasing our pieces. Since Obakki funds the administrative fees of our foundation, allowing 100% of public donations and merchandise to go directly into our projects, our customers have greater trust in our ability to create real change in the communities we support. WERE YOU SURPRISED BY THE REACTION? No – the Obakki woman is someone who is socially conscious and aware, so while incredible, the support and passion we’ve received from our customers is something we already thought they would be willing to give anyway! framework

YOUR SPRING/SUMMER 2013 COLLECTION REVOLVES AROUND SOUTH SUDANESE CATTLE CAMPS THREATENED BY TERRITORIAL CLASHES OVER BASIC NEEDS LIKE FOOD AND WATER. HOW DO YOU CONVEY SUCH A RICH AND COMPLEX STORY THROUGH FASHION AND ART?

with punctuations of blue, which symbolizes water and serves as a hopeful reminder of a peaceful solution to be generated through the sale of the collection.

We used different design elements to really represent the layers and complexities of this story. Modern fabrics and silhouettes are layered over traditional prints to show the unsettling contrast between the encroaching modern age and the cattle camps’ traditional way of life. My field images are layered upon 1920’s landscape prints to show the enduring framework of a culture unchanged by centuries. We also customdesigned patterns in-house to represent the impending destruction of this ancient beauty, while strong collars and detailing pay homage to the strength of South Sudanese tradition. Sheer paneling symbolizes the ways in which centuriesold traditions are dissolving due to modern times. We used a foundational palette of black and white

A great deal of it is mine, though we do use other shots to round out our inspirations during the creative assembly of each collection. Photography is a huge passion of mine, and I really feel that since these collections are so deeply personal for me, it’s important to communicate my own experiences in South Sudan through my snapshots. We’re now also selling an exclusive set of my field photography online, so it’s yet another way for people to get involved and support the communities that inspired the photography.

THE PHOTOGRAPHY WE SEE IN YOUR MOOD BOARDS IS STUNNING. IS IT YOUR OWN?

WE LOVE THAT. WHICH PIECE IN THE COLLECTION HOLDS THE MOST SIGNIFICANCE FOR YOU? WHY?

" People don’t want to just blindly write cheques anymore – they want to get more out of philanthropy and they should feel that way... We bring things full circle."

Well I love all of them, but the printed scarf from our 3-piece capsule collection, Preserved in Time – an extension of the spring line – is particularly special to me. Aside from the fact that the scarf is unbelievably soft and is a no-fail piece in anyone’s closet, I also love what it symbolizes: by paralleling my field photography with a 1920’s photograph, you can truly see how little this culture has changed and how important it is to accept these people’s way of life. Coming from the Western world, too often we want to encourage other cultures to move forward, which is a value that we obviously hold in high regard. However, for these communities, their ancient and nomadic way of life doesn’t need to be extinguished. 100% of proceeds from the Preserved in Time scarf go directly to our conflict reduction efforts in these cattle camps, helping them hold onto this centuries-old culture! WHAT LESSONS OR ADVICE FROM THE SOUTH SUDANESE PEOPLE HAVE YOU INCORPORATED INTO YOUR WORK OR WORLD AS A DESIGNER? One lesson that has really stuck with me was something I picked up while visiting Penglang, South Sudan. In that village, the women very strongly believe in the purpose of celebration, despite the hardships and obstacles they’ve faced in life. Though this need to overcome hardship

COVER GIRL is felt on completely different scales across the world, it taught me to take moments to stop and feel happy about what I’ve accomplished as a designer, as a founder, as a mom, etc.

Fortunately, philanthropy really fuels my family as well, so we do everything together as a family. Our kids travel with us everywhere.
