EDITOR’S LETTER

dear...

As our days get shorter and the air is definitively cooler, I have finally let go of summer and fully embraced fall. It is only fitting then, that the October issue celebrate all this season has to offer. While the fluctuating temperature can be a challenging obstacle for your style, our latest installment of “Fashion 101: The Modern Girl’s Guide to Layering,” (page 46) covers the basics. And since we’ll be spending more and more of our time indoors, our expert tips and tricks for transforming your space will have you decorating like a pro in no time. In the beautiful home of our cover girl—a very pregnant Perienne Sadler—we were treated to traditional paella among other Spanish flavours. With easy to follow recipes, Perienne has created a delicious and fresh fall menu for entertaining family and friends. Most importantly, we take this first weekend’s Thanksgiving festivities as inspiration for the rest of October, and give thanks for what we have, by giving back to those around us. Not only are this month’s interviews fantastic young entrepreneurs, their companies are also giving back in very special ways. Notably we are so proud to have partnered with Randa Salloum and I See Noise to raise awareness and funds for Vancouver’s Beauty Night Society (see page 44 for details), through the sale of a limited edition print.

I'd love to know, what are you thankful 10

BOOK CLUB SCARY STORIES

EVERY MONTH WE CHOOSE THREE MUST-READ BOOKS, FROM RECENT RELEASES TO OLD FAVOURITES, THAT WOULD FIT INTO ANY FRAMEWORK GIRL’S BOOK CLUB. IT’S JUST ONE MORE EXCUSE TO GET TOGETHER WITH FRIENDS OVER SWEET TREATS AND COCKTAILS!

by Sara Constantineau

Vampires, zombies, and ghosts—oh my! Halloween is just around the corner, so get in a macabre mood with some fun and frightening fiction. Each of these novels offer an inventive take on your favourite spooky creatures; just remember to leave a few extra lights on…

VAMPIRE ACADEMY BY RICHELLE MEAD

3.5 / 5

THE STORY

Powerful and provocative Rose Hathaway is a guardian-intraining on the run with her best friend Lissa, a mortal vampire and the only remaining member of her royal family. Forced to return to their secretive boarding school despite corruption and danger at every turn, Rose fights to protect them from the looming threat of the undead Strigoi while navigating a complicated attraction to her age-inappropriate mentor.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

While this story shares a genre with a certain other teen vampire tale, this one has actual bite. Equal parts action and romance, it has a unique layered mythology that goes way beyond the human world with a cheeky heroine who fights with the big boys, takes on the world, and comes out on top.

BEST FOR: BUFFY-LOVERS WHO LIKE THEIR VAMPIRES SANS SPARKLE 14

BOOK CLUB

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES

3/5

BY JANE AUSTEN & SETH GRAHAME-SMITH

THE STORY

Elizabeth Bennet breaks the mold with her beauty, wit, and awesome zombie-fighting abilities. England is overrun by “unmentionables,” but even a zombie apocalypse cannot stop Mrs. Bennet from trying to marry off her five eligible daughters when the wealthy Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy come to town. A battle of wits becomes a battle of life and death as Elizabeth fights to stay true to herself despite societal expectations and hordes of undead who want to eat her brains.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

If you can handle the sacrilege of tampering with such an adored classic, it's hilarious how easily zombies fit into every aspect of Austen's proper British novel. If you don't know the story it's an amusing introduction, and if you've read it 20 times it's one more adaptation to dive into. After all, we can always use more Darcy.

BEST FOR: KILLING TIME BETWEEN EPISODES OF THE WALKING DEAD

THE WOMAN IN BLACK BY SUSAN HILL

4/5

THE STORY

A young solicitor on the rise, Arthur Kipps travels from London to a small coastal town to attend the funeral of an elderly widow. Left alone in her secluded house to settle her affairs, the unexplained noises turn into bone-chilling hauntings that grow more and more sinister. Arthur soon realizes that he must unravel the mystery of the woman in black.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

This is one seriously scary, good old-fashioned ghost story. You can’t go wrong with a creepy old house, strange children, and a vengeful spirit with an enigmatic back story. This relatively quick read has all the components to keep you up at night. Plus, when you've finished reading you can watch the film-adaptation starring Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe for further chills.

1. COVER YOUR BASES

With a fluffy brush, apply a warm copper eyeshadow all over the eyelid and up into the crease. (We used Annabelle Single Eyeshadow #101)

2. DUST DARKER

Use a smaller eyeshadow brush and apply a dark chocolate brown shadow in the outer corners of your eye. Start at the end of your lashline, and dust up and in towards your nose – just like a sideways "V" shape. Apply a little shadow just along the lower lashline, too! (We used MAC eyeshadow in "Dark Devotion")

3. FINGERPAINT WITH SPARKLE

Load your fingertip with a shimmery copper or gold pigment. Pat the colour on the inner half of your lid to create a subtle yet enchanting twinkle.

4. LINE & PLUMP

Apply black pencil eyeliner just along the lashline, top and bottom. Finish up with lots of your favourite volumizing mascara. Our top picks are Bourjois Paris Khol & Contour Eyeliner, and Bourjois Paris Volume Clubbing Mascara.

L

ike her aptly named Etsy store, Social Experiment, Georgia Heraty’s fledgling ring design business started as just that—after taking a do-it-yourself jewelry class she went home and put together some rings. First for friends, and now, three years later, for IT-Girl fashion bloggers (like Alicia Fashionista, To Vogue or Bust, and LA in the Bay, to name but a few). Social Experiment is now celebrating its first official birthday as a brand, but Miss Heraty is no ordinary bauble maker.

framework

STYLE GEORGIA HERATY of SOCIAL EXPERIMENT

When asked to please state her occupation for the record, she started laughing. “I lead a double life,” she says. Because, as it turns out, the 25-year-old kept her day job and several others—in the past splitting her time between a Kinesiology and French degree, her ring business and a part-time job. And this ambitious multitasker isn’t designing jewelry just for the pretty perks. Or for the money made from her reasonably priced gems. “I really enjoyed the business aspect and … regardless of selling rings, I love networking, and making connections with people all over the world.” Despite the success of Social Experiment, she’s not signing up for goldsmith school anytime soon.

“A huge part of my personality is that I like having a lot of things on the go. I’ve always had three jobs in three very different areas. I like to be very balanced—that’s very important to me. I think if the opportunity presents itself and the signs are right I might pursue it full time—but I don’t think it’s right for me yet.”

I really enjoyed the business aspect and … regardless of selling rings, I love networking, and making connections with people all over the world.

So let’s talk about the rings. Born and raised in Vancouver, Georgia is a diehard West Coaster with the shell tattoo to prove it. It then comes as no surprise that her passion for our surrounding mountains and beaches might inspire her most creative expressions. Unfinished, irregularly shaped rough cuts in earth tones and burnt oranges —these new stones are the perfect raw

materials to accompany a vibrant West Coast fall. Always evolving, Heraty’s newest collection, Pacific Spirit, is admittedly a little different from the girly gems of rings past. “They’re not going to necessarily be everyone’s favourite. Previously, they were a lot more feminine and delicate looking, but these fall pieces are a lot more edgy and raw.” But what’s life without taking a few chances? And so to the entrepreneurial diamonds in the rough out there, she had this advice for you: “If you have an idea, go for it … you really have to believe in what you’re doing.” fw

EXPERT TIPS:

mantel style JOANNA VAGELATOS | INTERIOR DESIGNER THE CROSS DECOR & DESIGN "A FIREPLACE MANTEL IS A NATURAL FOCAL POINT, MEANING IT’S THE FIRST THING OUR EYES ARE DRAWN TO WHEN ENTERING A ROOM.YOUR MANTEL IS A PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO SHOWCASE YOUR MOST ADORED PIECES AND SHOULD BE A BEAUTIFUL REFLECTION OF YOU! TRY THESE FOUR TIPS TO CREATE A UNIQUE AND PERSONALIZED MANTEL DISPLAY."

1. 2. 3. 4.

SIZE

Use one large interest piece to fill up the space above your mantel; consider it your jumping off point. Whether you choose a mirror, piece of art, photograph, or a unique statement piece, don’t be shy with size! Ideally it should be around 2/3 the size of the fireplace; anything smaller will be overshadowed by other objects and create an unbalanced, bottomheavy look.

SHAPE

Once you have selected your focal piece, choose the rest of the accessories to be displayed. Mix it up—using a variety of objects and shapes keeps things interesting! For a more formal, traditional feel you can add equal height pieces on either side to create symmetry. For something a bit more eclectic, use objects varying in height, shape, color and texture. This creates a more “thrown together,” casual feel for your mantel.

LEVELS

You probably have a million amazing objects that could work beautifully on your mantel; however, they may be too small or squat to work on their own. Don’t discount them— Instead, give those cherished pieces a platform! Creating different levels with your objects can add character and variety; using stacked books with the jackets removed—keeping in mind colour and tone of bindings—Is an easy solution to elevate smaller pieces. You can also layer your art, or add some height with a more sculptural object (we love the cloche!).

INTEREST

Whatever you place on your mantel should be a reflection of you and your space. Be bold in your choices and showcase objects that mean something to you—not only will YOU enjoy it more, it will also serve as a conversation starter when guests come to your home. This is the main focus in the room so allow it to shine!

THE STATEMENT PIECE | THE COLOUR SPLASH | THE GALLERY WALL

T RA N S F O R M Y O U R S PA C E WITH

ARTWORK by Amelia Eichholz, Art Consultant

Are your apartment walls blankly staring at you? Could your bedroom use a design facelift? If your Elle DĂŠcor tear-outs just aren't cutting it, look no further! Here are three simple ways to enhance a room with spectacular artwork.

BIGGER IS BETTER Give the guests something to remember when they visit with a large-scale statement piece in your living area. Allow the artwork to leave a lasting first impression; it’s always more interesting to make artwork personal, so why not display an exciting image from your latest adventure? Take note of this living room. The artwork, an enlarged photo of a train station in Portugal— captured on the homeowner's vacation—lends an edgy, modern feel to the room. This eye-catching piece immediately commands the viewer’s attention and will surely have them wanting to know more! For your very own conversation piece check out Saatchi, a social marketplace supporting the growth of the global art community and providing a new way to find and sell artwork online. For a pretty penny this Antonia Peña framed photograph can be yours. Crazy about her striking, photorealistic style, but not so crazy about the price? Order a print of one of her photographs instead. Handy with photo editing software, or know someone who is? Crop, resize, or re-colour your own photograph and have it printed and stretched on canvas for a one-of-a-kind statement. Whether you invest in an original, purchase a print, or create your own piece, having artwork that makes an impact is the most important factor!

POP OF COLOUR

Are you fully committed to fall’s coloured denim and bright accessories? Don’t let that obsession stop in your wardrobe—just like you’d rock a pop of colour in your outfit, transform your home with a splash of bright artwork. With a bold painting, a once-neutral room will become chic, sophisticated, and playful. Don’t know where to begin? Focus on incorporating colours that will complement the neutral space; canary yellow works well with navy, tangerine pops against cream, and lime stands out in a sea of pale grey. If adding a large dose of colour scares you, integrate a painting with softer, subtler colours instead. In the image above, fashion blogger Alexandra Heitz creates warmth in her workspace by hanging a pastel abstract painting above her desk. This is also a great example of how a cheerful piece can add character to a room. For bright, energetic paintings, Claire Desjardins' work is definitely a go-to. This artist can be found in her studio in Québec, and her passion for abstract expressionism is obvious through the vibrant colours and shapes displayed in her work. Claire’s paintings are not only eyecatching, but they exude a sense of happiness too!

THRICE AS NICE Create the ultimate collage of beautiful artwork with a gallery wall. We all have those spaces that are in desperate need of some decorating love, and creating a gallery wall provides just that. Depending on the size of wall, start by collecting three to five pieces of art—think an elegant drawing in a simple white frame and a small mixed media piece on canvas. The more you play with textures, patterns, sizes, and mediums the better! Though you want to achieve an effortless, randomly collected feel, be sure to pay attention to proportions and balance. The gallery wall in this living room looks cohesive and intentional without feeling forced, and the variety of sizes and frames make it successfully striking. A gallery wall also works well along a staircase, and is a nice invitation for people to get a closer look and interact with each piece individually. For affordable and beautifully illustrated prints try Paperfashion’s Big Cartel site—her drawings deliver a sense of whimsy and are the perfect size for a gallery wall. If you want to enhance the playfulness of a piece and create more dimension, add a vibrant, coloured frame. Looking for more artwork to add to your collection? Etsy is one of the best spots to snag some exciting deals from talented, emerging artists. Try searching for a graphic painting or pencil drawing to fill your extra wall space.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN INVOLVED IN THE CREATIVE WORLD? Not only have I always been involved in it, I was born into it! My father is an artist as well and I grew up with him always creating oil paintings. We even used oil paints for my dinosaur land model in the fifth grade... yes, I was that kid. It wasn’t until later on that I pursued it with schooling at the Art Institute.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO LEAVE YOUR CAREER IN FASHION MERCHANDISING AND STYLING TO PURSUE BLOGGING AND CREATING ART FULL TIME? I always had the sense of being an entrepreneur. As a child I would set up shop at the bottom of my driveway hustling my McDonalds toys for two dollars a pop. I always wanted to be my own boss. It wasn’t until one day at work I had that moment of “the straw breaking the camel’s back” and I realized that work is something that I can change if I’m unhappy with it. Being happy with your work and what you do day to day is the biggest motivation.

HOW DID I SEE NOISE GET ITS START? During my time of unemployment after quitting my job I was struggling with calling anything my own and was feeling blocked creatively. I decided to pick up my paint brush again and my boyfriend at the time, Eric, introduced me to some new craft materials. We figured out a way to mesh the two ideas and the first print was created! I immediately Instagram-ed a couple shots and the questions and orders began.

TELL US ABOUT THE NAME’S SIGNIFICANCE… The name literally means that I see noise. It comes from a neurological condition called Synaesthesia. I am able to see noise come to life as well as numbers, letters, colors and shapes.

FEMININITY AND GLAMOUR; HAS THIS ALWAYS BEEN OF INSPIRATION TO YOU? As a teenager I was somewhat of a tomboy and didn’t care for anything feminine. It wasn’t until my adult years that I started to feel more feminine and glamorous and appreciated all that came with it. Now, the inspiration is flowing!

WHICH WAS THE VERY FIRST I SEE NOISE PIECE? There were four—the 24K Gold Chanel No. 5 Perfume Bottle, Makeup Brush Set, Coco Chain Bracelet, and the Vintage Perfume Bottle.

HOW HAS YOUR WORK EVOLVED SINCE THEN? I started with four images in 24K Gold and I now offer forty-two images and eight collections all in 24K Gold and Sterling Silver. My ideas and inspirations have expanded into areas of life and beauty that I didn’t think of before.

THAT IS QUITE THE GROWTH SPURT! CAN YOU TELL US THE PROCESS BEHIND CREATING YOUR PRINTS WITHOUT REVEALING YOUR SECRET? I can’t say too much… it’s now a family secret! Basically, I render images digitally and place a mixed media over top to get that metallic sheen. Each print will always be different. That’s all you’ll get out of me!

FAIR ENOUGH. YOU’VE RECENTLY RETURNED TO YOUR ARTISTIC “ROOTS” WITH THE ACRYLICS COLLECTION. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THIS MEDIUM? Actually, the Acrylics collection was in the works even before I See Noise began! It was the first steps to creating ideas before I discovered my materials. What I love about painting is framework

35

that it takes me back to when I was a child and watching my dad do the same form of art—plus, it’s extremely therapeutic.

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR CREATIVE EXPRESSION WITH THE USE OF COLOUR? Personally, no. I do it more for my customers as they may find a difference in their own creative expression when designing their space with an I See Noise print.

SINCE YOU’RE NOT SELLING THE ORIGINAL PIECES, IT MUST GET

" NOT ONLY AM I A BUSINESS OWNER BUT FOR THE PAST 25 YEARS I’VE BEEN A CUSTOMER. I UNDERSTAND WHAT IT TAKES TO GIVE EXCELLENT SERVICE BECAUSE I MYSELF WANT EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE. REPETITIVE MAKING MULTIPLES OF EACH IMAGE. HOW DO YOU STAY PASSIONATE? In a sense, every piece I create is an original because each print will never be the same. Sometimes it can become irritating making the same images over again and it does get to the point of frustration but I always remember when I’m creating the images and how fulfilling it is, not only for me to create the prints but for others to own them.

BESIDES PRODUCING THE PRINTS, WHAT GOES INTO YOUR BUSINESS ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS? I’m very connected with my customers through social media. I’m constantly interacting with

them on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. I also need to take the time for organizing and filing away paperwork, scouting more materials, and working on custom orders. I also spend a ton of time exploring inspiration for new ideas.

YOU’VE CITED THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE AS MOST IMPORTANT IN YOUR BUSINESS. WHAT DOES THIS PHILOSOPHY LOOK LIKE? In a nutshell, if they’re happy—I’m happy! Not only am I a business owner but for the past 25 years I’ve been a customer. I understand what it takes to give excellent service because I myself want excellent customer service. I don’t believe in making the customer wait if they don’t need to, whether it’s with contacting or delivery. If it wasn’t for these customers I wouldn’t have a business!

HOW IMPORTANT HAS BRANDING BEEN FOR I SEE NOISE? Branding has been the bread and butter for the business. Without branding, I See Noise would be another body of work in an online art world of millions. I thought it was extremely important to include my name in all logos. It’s more personable that way as I am the creator of each print and it’s not just about the artwork but the

CULTURE & LIVING

slums because something didn’t go as planned, or things are just slow. I just need to remember that I am able to be doing what I love and something I started myself and it brings me right back on track.

WE CAN ALL RELATE TO THAT! WHAT KEEPS YOU SO DRIVEN? Honestly... I really don’t want to report to

"I DON’T LIKE TO LOOK TOO FAR INTO THE FUTURE WITH MY PRINTS BECAUSE I LIKE THE SPONTANEITY OF MAKING RANDOM DECISIONS AND SEEING WHERE IT TAKES ME. THAT’S HOW IT STARTED, ANYWAYS. " process of how it’s done and who makes it.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER FACTORS YOU CAN ATTRIBUTE TO THE BRAND’S SUCCESS? If it wasn’t for my blog, The-Unprecedented, I would not have had an audience to show the prints to. They really have taken all of my prints and ran with them, and for that I am extremely appreciative. I’m greatly thankful for all of the boutique owners that are also selling I See Noise prints. They’re expanding the brand to their own customers and it’s more than I could ask for!

ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS NEVER THE EASIEST ROUTE, WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED IN TURNING YOUR PASSION INTO YOUR DAY JOB? It would have to be staying positive and focused. As an entrepreneur it’s impossible to always have amazing days where you feel high on life because everything is going exactly as you wanted. You have days where you feel in the

someone anymore. I’m over it! I have the freedom to create my own schedule, create my own ideas, and execute them. Even just the small change of being able to say “yes” to my friends and family when making plans instead of “I don’t know if I’m scheduled that day,” made the biggest difference in my happiness—that is the major factor in keeping me driven.

YOU’RE CERTAINLY NOT ALONE IN THAT FEELING. HOW DO YOU FIND BALANCE BETWEEN I SEE NOISE, YOUR BLOG THE UNPRECEDENTED, AND YOUR PERSONAL LIFE? I like to think I have a great balance; however, I’m sure my friends and family will tell you differently! I See Noise and The-Unprecedented are my full time jobs. They take up 7 days of my week but being able to make my own schedule has allowed me to make the appropriate amount of time for my friends and family. I also like to include them with my prints and blog so I get ample time with them.

FASHION 1O1: The Modern Girl's Guide to Layering| with Jen Tam WRITTEN & STYLED BY RHYA JOHNSTON-WALLACE photography by D / her waise choice makeup by Tamar Taitinger

FOR WEATHER WITH A COOL, CRISP FALL UPON US AND WINTER ON IT’S HEELS, LAYERING IS THE PERFECT WAY FOR FRAMEWORK GIRLS TO BEAT THE WEATHER IN STYLE. BETWEEN INDOORS AND OUT, THE SEASON BRINGS A BODY TEMPERATURE THAT SEEMS TO FLUCTUATE BETWEEN THAT OF AN ARCTIC EXPLORER AND A DESERT NOMAD. WALKING OUT THE DOOR, YOU MAY BE INCLINED TO SPORT A PARKA AND SNOW PANTS. HOWEVER, UPON ENTERING YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD COFFEE SHOP YOU ARE STRUCK BY A HEAT WAVE THAT BEGS THE QUESTION: “HAVE I STEPPED INTO A HOT YOGA CLASS?” THE SIMPLE SOLUTION TO THIS SEASONAL, WEATHER-BASED DILEMMA? LAYERING WITH PRACTICALITY.

OPEN SEASON

Try wearing no-fuss pieces that are easily taken off and put back on such as open button ups, cardigans and jackets.

ALL TOGETHER NOW

Make sure that each layer works with its preceding layer; this is key. As you remove a piece here or there, your outfit should always look fabulous.

Beautiful, elegant, stylish, exotic... these are words that easily describe both Mona Sultan and her namesake collection of silk-cotton scarves. The Graphic-turnedSurface designer from Syria now callsVancouver home. Her personal aesthetic, however, is decidedly more cosmopolitan-edge meets eclectic-chic than West Coast casual. With a remarkable eye for colour and texture, and effortless, inventive styling, Mona Sultan’s scarves are more than just another accessory line in the local style scene. Thoroughly impressed by her first foray into fashion, we met Mona inside the carefully curated East Vancouver home she shares with her husband for a closer look...

STYLE You were raised in Damascus; what was it like growing up in Syria? Safe. Simple. Complicated. Enriching. Frustrating. Exciting. Unusual. Happy. Sunny. Educational. Enlightening. Uplifting. Welcoming. Breathtaking. Heartbreaking. Busy. Loud. Inviting. Fragrant. Inspiring. Adventurous. Home. What were some of your creative influences, early on? My mother was a big influence; she is a very talented seamstress, artist, cook... you name it! I grew up watching her create and she taught me a lot about fabric, sewing, and mostly quality and clean finishing. Another creative source growing up was French Elle; it was hard to find in Syria and it was very expensive... I would get the May issue in September! I used to flip through each magazine over and over again, the walls of my room were always covered with magazine cutouts and, to this day, I get a lot of my inspiration from fashion magazines. One of the very special things about living in one of the oldest cities in the world is the fact that there is so much inspiration around. Growing up, I used to walk around the old town for fresh ideas.

What propelled you to take Graphic Design at the Lebanese American University in Beirut? I was torn between Fine Arts and Graphic Design. I started with both—a double major— but quickly fell in love with the frenetic side of Graphic Design. What work were you doing in the Middle East after graduating? I was freelancing as a Graphic designer for a while and I worked in film for a short period too, but nothing makes me happier than what I do today. How has your experience living in different cities of the world influenced your creativity? I am a visual person and I absorb a lot from my surrounding environment; I find that every city has exposed me to something different, whether it is culture, scenery, architecture, or art. It has all been registered somewhere in my brain and comes out while I am creating in the most unpredictable mixes, which is fun as it’s very effortless! Would you consider yourself a world traveler? Yes… I am definitely someone who needs to travel on a regular basis, and I usually get my fix when I visit cosmopolitan places that have a lot of history and architecture—mainly cities. I am the most satisfied when I visit manmade environments. Can you tell us about moving to Vancouver with your Canadian husband? I actually moved to Vancouver 4 years ago to be with my husband whom I was dating at the time. We met on the set of a movie we were both working on in Petra, Jordan. Moving here was a big step and a massive change from what I left behind. The culture, social life, food, weather…

I still find myself adapting to little things such as the lack of sunshine and the length of winter. I had a friend visit from overseas this summer, and her first comment when she first saw me was how pale my skin has become! And I have to add that I am still not used to the overly casual fashion here; where I come from, people love to dress up! Women are always freshly manicured with flawless hair and makeup. What made you decide to go back to school here? When I first came to Vancouver, I was on a visitor’s visa, and I had plenty of time on my hands. After two months of enjoying that freedom I started itching for a dose of creativity, so I decided to attend Emily Carr to learn about traditional printing techniques—it’s a subject I’ve always been fascinated with. What has been the most memorable experience from this next step in your career? Two years ago, I decided to start a boutique surface design business that focused on custom wallpaper and murals, which quickly evolved into my line of scarves. My most memorable moment was when I unfolded the first scarf I designed, it was then that I realized what my true passion was. How did you go from graphic design to designing a line of scarves? Was this always something you wanted to do? I was done with designing logos and creating brands for other businesses. I wanted to have my own brand and I wanted to work in fashion. I always knew that although I studied Graphic Design, I was eventually going to pursue a career in fashion; it was an ongoing feeling, one I could never fully explain. I believe that being around fabric, patterns, and sewing machines ever since I was young definitely had something to do with it. We’re so glad you followed that feeling! Can you tell us about the transition from

graphic design to textiles? Learning about traditional printing techniques and the processes involved definitely helped with the transition. I still design everything on the computer, so that hasn’t changed. I do think that having a design background means that branching out is always an option--it actually brings something different to the table. That’s not to say that I didn’t have to learn a lot—I’m still learning—but it is a work in progress and I am enjoying every moment of it. Is the design process for creating scarves different than with your other work? It is pretty much the same for me, except with the scarf line I am my own client, which allows more freedom. I’ve always enjoyed the process of creating; I have ongoing mood boards—online and offline—that come in handy when I’m ready to brainstorm for a new collection. I start searching for common themes and colors and framework

With my main theme in mind, I start to slowly see patterns, graphics, color combos… and the rest just flows. I do have to say that, from the very first pin on my mood board to the moment I unfold each scarf, there is something extremely rewarding that I couldn’t find in graphic design. What elements have inspired your Fall 2012 collection?

"THE FLAPPERS WERE WOMEN WHO DARED TO BE DIFFERENT, AND THAT IS IN MY OPINION, THE ESSENCE OF STYLE" 76

framework

The flappers of the 1920’s. They were the adventurous women of that era; they wore short skirts, smoked, drank and wore lots of makeup, which at the time were all considered unacceptable behaviors. Their style was influenced by the “garçonne” fashion, pioneered by Coco Chanel; they wore straight loose dresses, fitted hats and cut their hair short. The flappers were women who dared to be different, and that is in my opinion, the essence of style. We love that each piece is named after a remarkable woman from that era; which one do you most closely identify with?

I picked these women specifically because somehow, during my research, I felt a connection with each one. Sometimes it was based on their style, other times on a certain character trait, and sometimes it was just a simple thing that I couldn’t put my finger on.

My favourite look for the fall is what I call the Full Wrap—the scarf is wrapped several times to cover the entire neck; then add a leather motorcycle jacket, a white tee, black skinnies, and cowboy booties. That’s a look we’re ready to try! What is next for Mona Sultan? Spring/Summer 2013! For now, this is where I’m at. wine trio b.c. pinot noir

WRITTEN BY SOPHIE COLLINS

Pinot Noir: Thanksgiving is a time for cozy sweaters, crackling fires, long, slow walks with leaves crunching under your feet, and most importantly, a hearty meal paired with fabulous wine. The following three wines are our favorites for enjoying with that special roast turkey you have cooking to perfection in the oven. When all of your hard work is complete, and your steaming food is on the table, open up one of these three wines to enjoy with your family and friends while you give thanks.

everyday table $

CALONA VINEYARDS PINOT NOIR $14.99

This Pinot Noir is from a Calona Vineyards series of wines that depicts local artwork on their labels. The label is as beautiful as the wine’s light ruby colour. This wine will hold up well with turkey, but is also light enough to be sipped while preparing your big feast. We especially love its fruity nose and juicy mouth feel. This wine serves well alongside a red-wine gravy on your turkey.

dinner party $$

TINHORN CREEK PINOT NOIR $19.99

This bottle of Pinot Noir was aged for two years before being released on the market. More medium bodied than the Calona Pinot, the complex flavor of this wine comes from the aging that took place at Tinhorn Creek. Its fruity flavor is undercut with some toasty spice, perfect for an herb and clove-roasted chicken, and just as lovely with turkey.

special occasion $$$

BLUE MOUNTAIN PINOT NOIR $31.95

We love Blue Mountain's commitment to maintaining a high quality with relatively low prices. This price point displays Blue Mountain’s cream label, which is complex, dark in colour, and truly excites your palette with a fruit forward taste and hints of spice on the finish. This Pinot Noir is your best bet for a wine pairing with all of your Thanksgiving meal choices.

When choosing wine to pair with your food, do not only take into account what you are cooking, but also the sauce you are serving. More often than not, the sauce will be the deciding factor! framework

Right now Heirloom tomatoes are in season. It’s so simple to slice some perfect Heirlooms nice and thick, alternate with a slice of buffalo mozzarella and a big fresh basil leaf on a platter, add some sliced shallots and top with a good dollop of quality olive oil and balsamic reduction—easy and so delicious… Also, get to know fleur de sel and fresh ground pepper; properly seasoned food tastes like a better version of what it is—not salty, just enhanced. Are there any quick and easy ways to make a basic meal feel more special? It has to be made with love and served beautifully. Garnish something simple with a sprig of fresh herbs, top pastas with big shavings of Parmigiano Reggiano and some fresh basil or flat leaf Italian parsley. Garnishes elevate a simple dish to something special and memorable. What is it about this Paella recipe that makes for such a great fall meal? Paella was always a go to meal for my Mom and I to serve. We would scour the city for the freshest, best seafood and the highest quality organic chicken. Paella features a beautiful assortment of colours and amazing flavours, and is served completely rustic in the pan—I use my great Papa’s sterling silver spoon! It’s perfect for guests to dig in, pick out their favourite seafood, and enjoy heaping piles of stick-to-your-bones rice all with sweet grilled lemons squeezed on top! I also add a drizzle of zesty lemon-parsley sauce for a smackyou-in-the-mouth flavor boost. Nothing beats this Paella—the colour of the saffron, the heartiness of the chorizo, chicken, and the beautiful white fish, and a reason to come together with loved ones— it’s just perfect for fall! Tell us more about your food philosophy… At home and in my restaurant, the best part about food is people coming together over special meals.

It’s where families celebrate, share memories, and come together without the craziness of life’s everyday distractions. Every night with my own family, we sit down to dinner, talk about our day, and share a slice of time that’s so special; it’s just ours. The love, the sharing, the time together, that’s what I adore about this business—it’s who I am! Your restaurant, Cove Fine Foods, strives to make people feel right at home with casual fine dining. What elements are essential to creating this atmosphere? We believe in an upscale casual atmosphere; the best quality food—fine dining at its best—but in a tangible environment for our everyday lives. We strive to give our customers a way to share laughter and memories over fabulous food on a daily basis. Believing in a farm to table approach, we work with the best local farmers and fisherman to bring the day’s catches and harvest to your table—we only use all natural meats. We love what we do, and believe in bringing the chef’s coat out from behind the back of the house; our chef is always happy to share his recipes, tell you about your dinner, and share his love of food with you. We love good wine, and great cocktails so our bartenders and servers are always mixing up something delicious. When you come to my restaurant, I want you to feel like you are walking into my home. Steps away from the ocean, and one of the most beautiful parks the city has to offer, our passion is to bring you the best food and dining experience to match beautiful Deep Cove. This community, this location—it sets the bar high for us! And creating it at home for your guests? We have an open door policy—I’m not great at cooking for two or three or four, so I always tend to have extra of whatever I’m cooking or baking. home style and familiar while elevating it to be a memorable and upscale experience. My husband doesn’t drink, so it taught me to pay attention to the little details. Always have a nice sparkling, non-alcoholic option and serve it in a crystal wine glass or with fresh fruit. My philosophy has always been NOT to save my china, linens, etc. for a special occasion—every day is a special occasion, so use it! I’ve served take out on my wedding china with tons of candles and vintage linens. What has been your most memorable entertaining experience? I was so fortunate to have had years of entertaining in my Mom’s kitchen, I could never narrow it down to one—it’s really an entire lifetime of beautiful memories around our huge dining room tables! I grew up throwing parties with her, cooking, serving, and pouring wine for my parents’ guests. We’d hide good bottles of wine in the kitchen just for us and pour less exciting ones for our guests. People would get outrageous, and we’d retreat to the kitchen to laugh about it! My earliest memories are curled up in my Mom’s fur coats with the sounds of glasses clinking and people telling stories at dinner parties. It’s safe to say you learned much of your love for food from your mother. What do you hope your own daughters will learn from you? Cooking is a labour of love—everything about it— from kneading dough to serving something we spent hours or days preparing. The time together in the kitchen was a way of sharing stories, building a beautiful relationship together and learning to operate seamlessly as a team. She taught me that sharing the food we loved and cooked was our way of sharing our love with the people in our lives. I want my girls to be able to share the same love of family that way. I want them to learn to appreciate bringing family together to break bread, and to savour those special memories. That’s what life is all about; food is just our sneaky way of bringing

COVER GIRL everyone together to achieve that! You’ve mentioned in past interviews that your cooking and recipes are sometimes related to fashion. How would you describe this menu in fashion terms? The leaves are changing, the colours surrounding us are getting deeper and richer, nights are chillier, and my fashion sense reflects that! I want boots and scarves, leather jackets, wool and cashmere and my grandma’s furs. My menus always reflect that—risottos, hearty slow cooked Bolognese with turkey instead of beef and veal. Paella is my perfect transition dish; it’s the colours of the leaves, without being as heavy as winter food. It sticks to your bones and is comforting, but the fish and the fresh roasted peppers and lemons keep it lighter than traditional winter fare… it’s just perfect for fall! Do you have any fashion tips for a hostess the night she entertains? I’m a big fan of having everything all done ahead of time, and changing into something impossibly fresh right before everyone arrives. Despite how effortless or not your preparation was, I think it is always important for guests to arrive to an organized and welcoming party, and for you as the hostess to be as put together as possible. And if all else fails, a fabulous vintage apron is always a nice touch to save a silk dress from any little spills or splatters! The Framework Girl is all about the little details that make for a stylish life. What does living in style mean to you? I believe in a life surrounded by beauty; it’s just the way I’m most happy living and raising my family. I find inspiration in the beauty around me—fresh cut flowers, colourful fresh vegetables from the farmers market, a beautiful home—there is beauty everywhere and the creative side of me thrives in that environment! fw

FALL FRESH MENU

WATERMELON, SERRANO & MANCHEGO BITES "The secret to this simple starter is to be slightly "chef-y" in your presentation— cut your watermelon into uniform squares and use lovely toothpicks to garnish."

PAELLA "Paella is my perfect transition dish; it’s the colours of the leaves, without being as heavy as winter food. It sticks to your bones and is comforting, but the fish and the fresh roasted peppers and lemons keep it lighter than traditional winter fare… it’s just perfect for fall!"

SPICY GINGERCHOCOLATE COOKIES "I always have these ingredients in my pantry, and they inevitably ended up as a cookie! It's a great go-to for any sweet tooth; they take minutes to throw together. The cookies should be crisp on the edges but still chewy and soft on the inside, so watch them in the oven."

CUISINE

THE

STARTER

WATERMELON, SERRANO & MANCHEGO BITES • Watermelon • Serrano (if you must

cheat, an Italian 18 or 24 month prosciutto will wow your guests and no one will know the difference!)

• Manchego (a nice

Parmigiano Reggiano is a fair substitute—Manchego can be tricky to find)

• Good quality olive oil (I have always preferred a

Spanish olive oil—they are fruitier than Italian)

• Fleur de sel or kosher salt • Fresh ground pepper

No recipe necessary here—cube your watermelon, making sure to cut off all the biter white rind. Place a slice of Serrano and a shaving of Manchego on your cube, drizzle with olive oil, seaso with a sprinkle of salt and a good grind of pepper, and serve!

Make sure your watermelon is full of flavour, and your Serrano is the real deal (jamon iberico—black acorn-fed Spanish pigs that are raised on a mountainside, if you must know!)

INGREDIENTS • 6-10 grilled lemons halves, cut across the equator (see prep work)

1 can clam nectar 4-6 cans chicken broth 1 heaping tsp saffron 1 heaping tsp Spanish smoked paprika

• 1 large yellow onion, chopped • 3-4 garlic cloves • 1, 4" piece Spanish chorizo (spicy is my favourite), sliced thinly on diagonal

• • • •

1/2lb fresh clams 1/2lb fresh mussels 1/2lb live prawns, heads on 1 lb firm white fish, skin and bones removed, cut into 1-2" thick steaks (halibut, black cod,

rock cod, ling cod, sole, etc)*

• 4-8 skin on boneless chicken thighs • 2 –3 cups Carnaroli risotto rice (depending on size of pan)** • 1 bunch fresh flat leaf parsley or fresh cilantro (whichever you prefer, not both!)

• Fleur de sel for seasoning • Fresh ground black pepper for seasoning

high. Grill lemons, cut side down until grill marks appear. Grill red peppers until charred on all sides. Remove from grill and set lemons aside. When red peppers are cool enough to handle, remove and discard charred skin—it should peel right off. Remove seeds and stems and roughly chop.

2/

Combine chicken stock, paprika, clam nectar, and saffron in medium pot. Place on back burner on low, whisking in saffron to combine and keeping warm.

3/ Make your Lemon-Yogourt Aioli. Pour into a pretty serving bowl and set aside for serving; garnish w sprig of parsley and lemon wedge.

LEMON-YOGOURT AIOLI • 2 Cups thick, Greek-style plain yogurt • Zest & juice of 1 lemon • Handful of fresh parsley or fresh cilantro (whichever you prefer, not both—keep consistent with the one you are using with your paella) • 1 garlic clove • Pinch of fleur de sel • Pinch of pepper

Place all ingredients in blender and pulse until smooth. Season to taste! framework

pan (any large, flat and deep pan) with healthy pour of olive oil over med-high to high flame. 2/ Place prawns in pan, shells down, and cook without moving for 2-3 minutes. Flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Remove and set aside. 3/ Place lobster tails/claws in pan, cook for 4-5 minutes, flip and cook for another 3-4. Remove and set aside w prawns. 4/ Add more olive oil if pan is getting dry. Place chicken thighs and/or breasts skin side down and cook for 5 min without moving, to brown skin. Flip and cook other side for 4-5. Remove and set aside with shellfish. 5/ Lower heat to medium, add chopped onion, peppers, garlic, chorizo, salt and pepper, stirring to incorporate all brown bits on pan and let cook until tender— about 10 minutes. Move to sides to make room for rice (see photo). 6/ Pour in rice in a nice thick cross to get the perfect amount for your pan. Stir in with vegetables. 7/ Using a ladle, completely cover with

the stock, bring to a boil, cover and turn down to med-low. 8/ Arrange chicken evenly against outside of pan and cover; cook for 5 minutes. 9/ Peek in, if stock is mostly absorbed, ladle in more to almost cover rice. Cover and simmer for another 5 minutes. 10/ Remove cover; arrange prawns, mussels, clams, and fish, alternating like a clock around outside. Ladle in more stock so Paella is very moist. Cover and cook for 5 minutes. 11/ Remove cover and sprinkle peas evenly over top of dish; cook for 5 more minutes. Clams and mussels should have opened, fish and chicken should be cooked through, and the rice should be cooked perfectly with all liquid absorbed but dish not dry. 12/ Add more stock to adjust thickness and moisture to your liking; turn off burners and cover, letting sit off heat for 10-15 minutes. 13/ Remove cover, arrange lemons grilled side up, and garnish with a rough chop of flat leaf parsley or cilantro.

SERVE RUSTIC-STYLE WITH THE PAELLA PAN ON THE TABLE, A HUGE SERVING SPOON, HERBED LEMON-Y SAUCE ON SIDE, AND BIG BOWLS SO YOUR GUESTS CAN DIG RIGHT IN. (AND DEFINITELY ENCOURAGE A BIG SQUEEZE OF GRILLED LEMONS AND DRIZZLE OF SAUCE!) ENJOY WITH A HEARTY SPANISH RED OR CRISP WHITE. 102

PAELLA

TIPS & TRICKS *FRESH CATCH

"Feel free to substitute any favourite seafood, shellfish, or chorizo based on what is most fresh for the season. Add more or less as you please, depending on your tastes and the size of your pan!"

**NICE RICE "I use Carnaroli—an Italian risotto rice—for a thicker, creamier paella that sticks to the back of your spoon. Arborio is a good substitute, or use a classic and traditional Spanish Bomba for a fluffier paella consistency."

CAN-DO "You get away with usingcanned roasted peppers, but fresh grilled and skinned red peppers from the farmer's market are so much better."

LIGHT TOUCH "Once you've stirred in the stock you don't want to stir or scrape the bottom of your pan, as it will develop a delicious (and coveted!) crust."

FREEHAND "Don't stress over amounts and measuring exactly; this is an easy, family style dish that will always taste amazing."

HEN MATT BATEMAN AND ASHLEY WRAY LEFT BEHIND THEIR BUDDING CAREERS AND THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO EMBARK ON AN UNPLANNED WORLD ADVENTURE, THEY HAD NO IDEA THE IMPACT IT WOULD HAVE ON THEIR FUTURES. Several years later, the soon-to-be-married couple doesn’t just have a romantic love story to tell. As co-founders of Mala Imports, the North American distributor of Aum Rudraksha Designs mala jewelry (seen around the wrists and necks of yogis, fashionistas, and A-list celebrities alike), Matt and Ashley are touching lives around the world in ways they hadn’t imagined possible. Like many young twenty-somethings, they were moving steadily along the safe route—the one we’ve all been encouraged to take—and feeling lackluster about their day-to-day lives. “We had the jobs we wanted, but we weren’t feeling fulfilled. We were busy for the sake of being busy, and knew there was something more. We wanted a change.” With backpacks in tow, the couple from

CULTURE & LIVING Chilliwack, BC, spent the year zigzagging across the world; Ashley—a journalist—chronicled their adventures in a blog for loved ones back home. From Europe to New Zealand and then to Southeast Asia, they eventually arrived in Ubud, Bali, the culturally steeped, inland village made famous by Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Eat Pray Love.” Ready for some much needed rest and relaxation, Ubud’s slow, peaceful pace soothed their travelweary bodies. “We ended up at this beautiful studio called the Yoga Barn … literally an open air barn overlooking lush forest. Before I went into my first yoga class, I fell in love with a green and brown necklace in the foyer. When I came out of my class, the necklace was gone! Matt had bought it for me while I was in class, and surprised me with it later.” To some, this is simply a kind gesture—a boyfriend buying a thoughtful gift for his girlfriend—but in Matt and Ashley’s story it was, unbeknownst to them at the time, a pivotal moment in their life’s direction. Seeing the jewelry at shops throughout the village, they bought multiple pieces for themselves, and to bring home as gifts for friends and family. Eventually leaving Bali, chance—or perhaps fate—would have them cross paths with a woman named Soma Temple, thousands of feet in the air, en route to Thailand. “Mid flight,” Ashley recalls, “a beautiful woman with long, dark, wavy hair came up to us. She said that she was drawn to our aura, that we were beautiful, and she would love to chat with us.” This comes as no surprise; Matt and Ashley are the kind of people everyone wants to be friends with. Energetic, genuine, and disarmingly open, talking to Ashley for the first time is akin to a longawaited tête-à-tête with your very best girlfriend. She radiates warmth like a mug of tea on a rainy day. And in perfect complement, Matt is the guy who will always have your back; dependable, caring, and calm, he’s the one you want in your corner to share the good times and to keep you strong when things are tough. Over the book “Screw It, Let’s Do It,” by world-

renowned entrepreneur—and Matt’s hero— Richard Branson, Soma noticed the lava and rudraksha bracelet on Matt’s wrist. And with a proud yet modest, “Oh, I made that,” she propelled the couple’s very own “Screw It, Let’s Do It” moment. “We gushed about how much we loved the jewelry, and asked if we could buy some at home in Vancouver. She said she didn’t know anyone in Vancouver, or in Canada for that matter. Matt and I looked at each other, looked at Soma, and told her we’d love to bring it to Canada.” In serendipitous alignment, Soma shared that while she moved to Bali more than thirty years ago, her journey with the jewelry began in India, where her spiritual guide had told her that she was “near a rich source of rudraksha beads, and that she was meant to spread them to the west.” After a five-year-long search for the beads, Soma began creating the jewelry, a unique combination

“WE HAD NO IDEA WHEN WE’D BE HOME, OR HOW TO RUN A BUSINESS, BUT WE WERE SO MOVED BY WHAT SHE SAID THAT WE WANTED TO BE A PART OF IT.” of rudraksha beads (believed to embody peace and provide calmness of mind) and gemstones (all offering different believed healing qualities). Now, more than twenty years later, Matt and Ashley are helping fulfill her guru’s dream that the world would be a better place if everyone wore rudrakshas. “We had no idea when we’d be home, or how to run a business, but we were so moved by what she said that we wanted to be a part of it.” With a handshake, and Soma’s contact information scribbled inside the cover of Matt’s book, Mala Imports began. framework

Q&A

WHEN WAS MALA IMPORTS OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED? M: When we shook Soma's hand on the plane

somewhere between Bali and Thailand. She signed her contact information in my Richard Branson book—one of the world's most inspiring entrepreneurs and one of my heroes. We knew it was amazing that our two paths had crossed, and for us, when something comes into our lives we like to embrace it and see what happens by just going for it.

A: We officially launched our website in January 2012. But it took a lot of preparation to get to that point. A lot of late nights, early mornings, and weekends at home while our friends were out. We started planning when we returned home from our trip in early 2011. We had a lot of long walks along the river to talk about our vision, what we wanted, and why we wanted it.

WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF GETTING THE BUSINESS UP AND RUNNING? A: The doubts that run through your mind. Self-

doubt is such a powerful thing. But we're so lucky we have each other to bounce ideas off of, and encourage one another. We balance one another out perfectly, which we are grateful for everyday.

M: Time and money. We both still work full time, so it's always a struggle. But we're so passionate about it, that we always find a way to make the time.

WHAT ARE YOUR RESPECTIVE ROLES IN THE COMPANY? A: I'm more of the communications person, having the journalism background. Matt is a phenomenal designer, and is really passionate about creating new pieces. Spending six months backpacking together really helped us figure out our strengths, and respect each other's space in those areas. I'm

What is a Mala? SIMPLY STATED, IT'S A STRING OF BEADS THAT HAVE BEEN TRADITIONALLY USED IN PRAYER AND MEDITATION. OURS ARE HANDMADE IN BALI, INDONESIA.

What is a rudraksha? A RUDRAKSHA BEAD (OR SEED) GROWS ON TREES IN SOUTH EAST ASIA, INSIDE OF WHAT LOOKS LIKE A BLUEBERRY—OURS ARE ALL SUSTAINABLY HARVESTED. THE WAY THAT THE SEEDS GROW OFF THE TREE IS THE SAME DIRECTION IN WHICH OUR RUDRAKSHAS ARE DRILLED AND STRUNG, AS THAT IS BELIEVED TO MAINTAIN THE ENERGY—OR PRANA—IN EACH PIECE.

really organized, and love going to meetings and connecting with new people. Matt's great with finances and building amazing stands to showcase the jewelry; he’s also an incredible people person.

DO YOU EVER DISAGREE WHEN IT COMES TO BUSINESS DECISIONS? M: Yes, of course! But it's great to disagree because we come up with resolutions that we wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

A: Agreed! One thing we always agree on is

that we only make business decisions—and life decisions—that we feel good about. If it doesn't feel right, even if it's simply a gut feeling, we say no. It's been our business mantra so far, and we're

“ONE THING WE ALWAYS AGREE ON IS THAT WE ONLY MAKE BUSINESS DECISIONS — AND LIFE DECISIONS — THAT WE FEEL GOOD ABOUT.” happy with where it's led us.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE THAT SIDE OF YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PERSONAL SIDE?

A: I think the struggle for life balance is something

that everyone deals with. We just happen to have our business and personal life all in the same area. We try to take nights off, and keep the business portion of our lives in a spare room where we can close the door. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't.

M: When it's something we're so passionate

about, it's hard not to want to talk about it all the time.

CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT HOW YOUR LIVES HAVE CHANGED? M: Absolutely. It's completely changed our lives. We're getting married in Bali next year because of it!

A: Soma happens to have a beautiful home on

the beach in Bali, where she raised her family. We can't wait to get married there! If we hadn't been on that plane ride, who knows what we'd be doing! Now we're attending yoga and fashion events, meeting people we would never have met otherwise, and have a new outlook on life. We have completely embraced the lifestyle that we think is reflected in the jewelry.

YOU’VE MADE QUITE AN IMPACT ON THE VILLAGE IN BALI WHERE THE JEWELRY IS CREATED. HOW HAS MALA IMPORTS AFFECTED THESE PEOPLE? M: It's pretty amazing to hear feedback from Soma about how things are changing for their village. She's constantly giving us updates. The jewelry making process creates tons of jobs— from the harvesting of the rudrakshas, to the knotting of the malas. The jewelry making itself has become a village effort, with everyone taking on different duties. The lives of Soma's goldsmith and carver have also changed, as they're getting so much business. All of Soma's employees also benefit from the profit sharing, which is awesome to hear. We're a part of it even though we're on the other side of the world, and that is pretty cool.

THE RIPPLE EFFECT IS SO INSPIRING! AUM RUDRAKSHA DESIGNS IS BRINGING

FASHION AND SPIRITUALITY TOGETHER. WHICH GEMSTONES DO YOU FEEL MOST CONNECTED TO? A: I'll always feel a special connection to the

green Aventurine stone, as it's the first piece of jewelry Matt bought for me when we were in Bali. It's believed to bring comfort and balance to your life— it’s definitely what I needed at the time… we even named it the Ubud Mala! But, I'm most drawn to the combination of stones in the Namaste Mala. It has Leopard Skin, Agate, and Jasper. Overall, this Mala is believed to help find solutions to problems, provide inspiration, concentration, and creativity, and is thought to promote balance and harmony. I don't think it gets better than that!

M: Definitely lava. I believe it gives me strength

to keep pushing through the hard times. Lava was worn by American Indians going into battle for its qualities of strength and clarity. I think that's pretty amazing.

DO MEN AND WOMEN WEAR MALAS DIFFERENTLY? M: No, we don't think so. A: But people definitely wear them for different

reasons. Some people love the gemstones and their qualities; we've had people tear up when we've explained the meaning behind the stones of the Mala they've chosen. Others are looking for energy, and will hover their hands over the pieces looking for the right one. Some are looking for a prayer necklace to use with their mantra during meditation, and others are looking for a fashion accessory. We support every reason that people wear the jewelry—in the end it's still promoting the same values of peace.

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR RECENT COLLABORATIONS WITH LOCAL FASHION DESIGNERS? M: We're working to launch a special line with

local yogi and singer Will Blunderfield. I've been creating pieces with him that feature a theme of lava. They look amazing. We're also collaborating with local designer Nicole Bridger for Vancouver
