dear... I like to call myself a “hopeful” romantic (hopeless just sounds so resigned), and you can bet I swooned over all of this month’s features more than once! Leading the way in our love parade is Framework’s first ever cover couple and East Coast interview, Stephanie Sterjovski and Neal Jolly. From a strong passion for their business to the sweet surprises they leave for each other, these two are a fine example of living and loving to the fullest. Showcasing Stephanie’s personal style and design sensibilities, this feature puts my heart in a happy place. Back home in Vancouver, I joined the girls of Tutu & Fru, whose livelihoods and raison d’êtres revolve around your happily ever afters. Boy, do these ladies ever know how to have fun! With colourful confetti and gold glitter flying through the air, their photos will remind you to let loose and make life a party. And if ever there’s a party, you’ll be sure to find PARTYSKIRTS. With a longtime love for celebrations and style (passed down by mom no less), the Armstrong sisters are making it their business to outfit every gal, for every occasion. An instant Framework Girl classic, these skirts will take you from day to night for years to come. (If anyone’s listening, I’ll take one in every colour please!) Now, let me leave you with this: whether you’re single or attached, choose to love

BOOK CLUB

SHAMELESSLY HAPPY ENDINGS

EVERY MONTH WE CHOOSE THREE MUST-READ BOOKS, FROM RECENT RELEASES TO OLD FAVOURITES, THAT WOULD FIT INTO ANY FRAMEWORK GIRL’S BOOK CLUB. IT’S JUST ONE MORE EXCUSE TO GET TOGETHER WITH FRIENDS OVER SWEET TREATS AND COCKTAILS!

by Sara Constantineau

Spoiler alert—these picks all end with a happilyever-after in one way or another. Love comes in many different forms and so do love stories, so whether you’re in the mood for a lavish romance, something short and sweet, or a singleton’s lament, you will find something to relate to in the pages of these books. Sometimes, a shamelessly happy ending is all you need…

THE NIGHT CIRCUS BY ERIN MORGENSTERN

4/5

THE STORY

A mystery even to its founders, the Cirque des Rêves is an elaborate masterpiece of intrigue and illusion that sets the stage for an enigmatic duel between two esteemed magicians. Forced into a battle of egos that is not their own, Marco and Celia were bound together as children, destined to try to best one another using their unique magical gifts. But when they finally meet face-toface and the stakes become clearer, competition turns to passion and the strings binding the Cirque des Rêves start to unravel.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

Reading this atmospheric novel is like exploring the mysterious tents of the circus itself; every page holds lush descriptions of a fantastical world where new details make you rethink what came before. And, the unconventional finale reveals that all endings are really just beginnings in disguise.

BEST FOR: LOVESTRUCK DREAMERS WHO BELIEVE IN MAGIC 14

BOOK CLUB

ELLA ENCHANTED

4/5

BY GAIL CARSON LEVINE

THE STORY

A danger to herself at every moment, Ella is the beautiful and stubborn daughter of a wealthy merchant in the mythical land of Frell. She lives under the shadow of a dark secret, burdened by a curse that compels her to obey every request asked of her. When her father remarries after her mother’s untimely death, Ella must outwit her jealous stepsisters and money-hungry stepmother while trying to break the curse that threatens her best chance at happiness with the king’s charming son.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

The only thing this novel shares with the 2004 film is the name. This retelling of Cinderella takes all the classic elements of the well-known tale—evil stepsisters, a fairy godmother, prince charming and a pumpkin coach—and turns them into a funny and imaginative story with a feisty lead. Boasting the timeless quality of a fairy tale written for children, it rejects Disney’s love-at-firstsight scenario for a well-developed take on “happily ever after.”

BEST FOR: THOSE WHO THINK FAIRY TALES ARE TOO CLICHÉ

BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY BY HELEN FIELDING

3.5 / 5

THE STORY

Single, over 30, stuck in a dead-end job and still looking to lose those last ten pounds, Bridget Jones is searching for something that will spark a new era in her life. An era free from self-loathing over too many cigarettes, failed relationships and a scale that just won’t budge. Whether she’s giving in to an inappropriate crush on her dashing boss or dodging encounters with an old family friend, Bridget Jones never lets up in her quest for self-improvement.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

At this point Bridget Jones is rom-com royalty, but if you’ve only seen the film version you’re in for a treat. Shamelessly stolen from Jane Austen, the stereotypical love triangle between the good guy and the bad boy is elevated by Bridget’s mischievous narration and self-deprecating humour. Edgier than the film, the novel is relatable to any woman who arms herself with a to-do list to get her life in order.

wine trio

tasting: romantic wine W R ITT E N BY S O P H I E C O L L I N S

Romantic Wine: Three of the world’s romance languages are French, Italian and Spanish; what better way to celebrate the day of love than opening up a bottle of one of these countries’ best varietals? One of our favourite ways to celebrate a holiday is staying in to cook with a glass of wine, or two! So, treat your significant other to a candle-lit meal cooked with love and served with a side of romantic wine… C’est l’amour!

everyday table $

SEGURA VIUDAS BRUT RESERVA $15.99

Cava—the Spanish sparkling wine—is always a good, refreshing choice to start off a meal. Often a lot more affordable than its French Champagne counterpart, this sparkling white is a great option to start your meal. Light on the palate with some tropical fruit flavours, it will pair wonderfully with any appetizer you choose to serve!

dinner party $$

RUFFINO DUCALE CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA $29.99

Italian reds are a classic pairing with… you guessed it, Italian food! We love cooking Italian dishes because they’re simple, delicious, and totally romantic. Share a bowl of pasta with your loved one, top it with some homemade tomato sauce, and serve it with this tannic Italian red that will blow you away!

special occasion $$$

GABRIEL MEFFRE SAINTE CATHERINE GIGONDAS $32.99

Gigondas is one of our favourite French varietals. Full on the palate, this wine would pair wonderfully with one of the most famous French dishes—boeuf bourguignon. Why not start the meal off with some Spanish tapas and cava, serve pasta primi with the Chianti, and finish the meal off with some delicious boeuf bourguignon? It’s a European trip you won’t soon forget…

You don’t need a significant other to enjoy this holiday. Single gal? Have all of your best girlfriends over and remind them how much you love them by hosting the best dinner party of the year! framework

MARRY ME STEAK RECIPE

BY PERIENNE SADLER S A U C I S S E R E S T A U R A N T

WHEN I MET MY HUSBAND TO BE, WE BOTH KNEW IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT; A BEAUTIFUL WEDDING, TWO PERFECT BABY GIRLS, A RESTAURANT, AND AN UNDYING LOVE LATER, I OFTEN ATTRIBUTE HIS NEED TO MARRY ME SO QUICKLY TO A PERFECTLY COOKED STEAK. CONFESSION: BEFORE I MET HIM I HAD NEVER MADE A STEAK. BUT, I TAUGHT MYSELF HOW, AND NOW WE FEATURE THIS VERY RECIPE ON THE MENU OF OUR NEW FRENCH RESTAURANT, SAUCISSE.

STEAKS

TOOLBOX

CULTURE & LIVING

1. Before cooking, allow steaks to come to room

CAST IRON SKILLET

temperature, evenly salt both sides, and pat dry with paper towels.

LID

2. Heat cast iron skillet on high, pour a good sized dollop

(ANY KIND WILL DO)

TONGS WIRE RACK WHISK

of canola oil (must coat skillet) and heat until it glistens and looks streaky, not smoking.

3. Place steaks apart in skillet on high for 3-4 minutes. Don't move them until the full 3-4 minutes passes.

4. With tongs, carefully lift corner of steak; if it doesn't stick

MARRY ME STEAK WITH RED WINE REDUCTION ACTIVE COOKING TIME = 10 MINUTES

then it's ready. Flip each steak onto other side and place lid slightly askew for 3-5 minutes depending on preference of doneness.

5. Remove steaks from pan and place uncovered on wire rack to rest (minimum 10 minutes). Steaks should have perfectly browned, seared crust on each side.

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 boneless thick-cut Ribeye steaks (all natural, nonmedicated) • 1 - 1/2 cups Red wine; use the good stuff. • 1/2 tsp Herbs de Provence (with lavender preferably) • 2 tbsp Canola oil • 1 tbsp Butter • 1-2 sprigs fresh Thyme • Coarse sea salt or seasoning salt

RED WINE REDUCTION 1. While steaks are resting, lower heat to low, and slowly

pour red wine into hot skillet. It will steam and sputter, but it deglazes the pan perfectly.

2. With a coated or plastic whisk, whisk all the caramelized steak bits cooked onto the skillet, incorporating into the sauce.

3. Add whole sprig or two of fresh thyme, tablespoon of

butter, and 1/2 tsp of herbs de Provence. Whisking often, allow to reduce on low - medium heat until your pan sauce has thickened slightly and steak has rested. Strain through a fine, mesh strainer.

iMPORTANT NOTES:

• Turn hood fan to high. Smoke is a necessary evil to achieve a perfect steak. • A cast iron skillet is an absolute requirement. If you don't have one, it's a small investment and will provide a lifetime of incredible dishes.

SERVE & ENJOY Serve sauce on the side so perfect crust is not compromised. Browned mushrooms and roasted garlic mashed potatoes are my husband's favourite sides, but parsnip mash, caramelized onions or shallots are heavenly too! fw TWEET US YOUR FAVOURITE COMBO OR ASK FOR MORE TIPS AT @SAUCISSERESTAUR #MARRYMESTEAK 21 framework

WE HEART ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM

As this issue is filled with the things that set our hearts aflutter, it seemed the perfect opportunity to gush over my favorite art movement, Abstract Expressionism. I'm particularly fond of the various shapes and pops of color in de Kooning's pieces, and the swift mark BY AMELIA EICHHOLZ making present in Pollock's splatter paintings!

WHAT Abstract Expressionism is a style of painting that combines abstract form and expressionist emotional value. It draws influence from earlier movements like Surrealism and Cubism. Whereas the Surrealists explored the unconscious for means of disrupting society's cherished conventions, the Abstract Expressionists turned to the unconscious for symbols of universal meaning which could restore both art and society after World War II. Clockwise from top left: William de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, and Jackson Pollock

CULTURE & LIVING

WHEN & WHERE The movement developed in Manhattan during the decades immediately following World War II. Abstract Expressionism put New York City at the center of the Western art world, a position previously filled by Paris.

WHO The original Abstract Expressionist painters include Helen Frankenthaler, Ellsworth Kelly, William de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, Lee Krasner, Jackson Pollock, Frank Stella, and Clyfford Still.

CURRENT There are plenty of current Abstract Expressionist painters, but here are a few of our favourites... We adore their bold use of colour; perfect for making a statement!

When it comes to makeup, blue is a notoriously TRICKY COLOUR TO WEAR.THE WRONG SHADE CAN APPEAR DATED, OR MAKE YOU LOOK LIKE YOU HAVEN’T SLEPT IN A WEEK. BUT HERE’S THE GOOD NEWS: FANS OF THIS RICH HUE CAN SPORT IT BY USING THIS UPDATED TECHNIQUE, TAKING BLUE FROM TACKY AND CHEAP TO CLASSY AND CHIC.

LOOK 1: CAT EYE The secret to this stunning blue cat-eye look is a black base. With a black liquid eyeliner (we like Bourjois Paris Liner Feutre), trace a thin, winged line super close to your upper lashes. Next, take your blue liner or shadow and apply directly over the eyeliner to give the black a subtle tint. Finally, trace your blue shade just above your eyeliner, creating a doubleline effect. The fun pop of colour will peek through your lashes, while the black underneath keeps your whole look cleanly defined and elegant.

LOOK 2: SMOKY EYE Want to rock a bolder blue? Pick two shades of blue eyeliner or shadow to create a simple and striking gradient. First, line your upper lashline and lower waterline with a black eyeliner. Next, apply a lighter/brighter blue from the inner corners out, until about halfway across your lashline. Then take your darker blue and pick up where you left off, blending from the middle to the outer corners. (Tip: keep the colour close to your lashes to avoid smudging).

Navy is a great choice, but we suggest trying cobalt—it’s just as classy but with added saturation to make your striking eyes pop.

Lucky for you, dark skin wears bright colours really well—have fun with an attentiongrabbing cyan.

Jess’ favourite, cerulean is a gorgeous shade you can wear alone or work with other colours, like greens, purples, golds, or browns.

EXPERT TIP

Eyeshadow makes an amazing liner when applied with an angled brush dipped in water! For this look, we used several beautiful blue eyeshadows from the very affordable BH Cosmetics 88 Matte Palette.

behind the BRAND Tania Yan | Olive + Piper

}

WRITTEN BY JULIA DILWORTH PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEREMY JUDE LEE

OLIVE AND PIPER IS TRULY FOR LOVERS. OLIVE, CUTE WORDPLAY FOR ‘I LOVE’ IS EXACTLY WHAT THE VANCOUVERBASED ONLINE BOUTIQUE OWNER TANIA YAN WANTS. FOR YOU TO CLUTCH ONE OF HER PRECIOUS PIECES TIGHTLY IN-HAND AND EXCLAIM, ‘OLIVE IT!’ And who is this Piper exactly? Tania explains that while her team isn’t musically inclined, they associate bag pipers and flute players with things light-hearted, fun and whimsical, which is what they are all about. “We want our jewelry to make people feel love and happiness!” For Yan, who was born and raised in Vancouver, her path to budding entrepreneurship has been a meandering one: an experiment to discover herself and what she loves.Growing up she felt strongly drawn to science, of all the unjewelry-related things, and got her degree in Cell Biology and Genetics. Her first professional job, however, was in online marketing. “From that I grew to love eCommerce, blogging (I’ve had my own style blog for three years now), graphic design and social media.” Currently a marketing manager for a baby boutique, she is yet another Behind the Brand beauty with a day job. No matter the occupation, Tania says she always had a thing for jewelry. And working for Aldo Accessories a few years ago may have been the best and worst job she ever had. “I spent all my paychecks there and ended up with drawers and drawers of jewelry!”

STYLE

This harmless hoarding of pretty, shiny things was clearly another great love of Yan’s because Olive and Piper launched in late 2012, featuring her handpicked pieces sourced from designers around the world. As she explains, every girl has a thing, an obsession. And for Tania, it’s sharing her passion with others. “It is (amazing) to be a part of a community of people who range from having a strong love and passion for jewelry, to those who are looking to step outside the box and explore their style,” she says. “It's really a satisfying feeling to see people sharing their photos, styling their purchases, and having them take the time to send us a little note back to let us know that they've really enjoyed their whole experience.” For the 26-year-old, inspiration comes from knowing that doing something you really love (or ‘olive’) is possible—to wake up every day and enjoy doing work that doesn’t really feel like work. “Opportunity also inspires me—I really believe that your character is built on the experiences you

go through, the opportunities you are given and make for yourself,” Yan says. So did the marketing manager with a science degree always know she was going to start her own jewelry business? “I'm not going to say that I've known right from the start that this was my ‘calling,’ because believe me, I've been on a long journey searching for the answer, but I think subconsciously in the back of my mind, I always had a hunch. It just took a while to figure it out, and then to turn it into a reality.” And what does Tania truly olive? “Being involved in fashion, style, colour and beauty. I love jewelry and accessories and I truly believe that the pieces you wear can really show off your personality, your mood, and make a difference in the style and look of an outfit. It's great to be able to offer a selection of items to help women do so and maybe give them a little boost of confidence and pizzazz along the way!” fw

GROUP NIGHT OUT Whether you’ll be sipping cocktails or grabbing dinner, deciding what to wear when you’re going out with a group can be tricky. You want to feel cute and puttogether, but you don’t want to show up looking mega-glitzy when your dinner mates are decked in denim and plaid. Since the Framework Girl is not one to blend in with the crowd, we suggest an outfit with a playful mix of casual and dressy fabrics. NOT JUST FOR WEEKENDS

Try this season’s hot item, the sweatshirt, with a pretty, flowy skirt. The key to making this look work is to coordinate the colour palette of your top and bottom. Don’t forget some pretty baubles and a killer pair of heels to keep the look polished.

MIX ‘EM UP

Stripes are everywhere this season, but why limit yourself to one? Try layering stripes with stripes for a more dynamic take on casual. Skirts with rich colour are the perfect way to bring elegance to your outfit while chunky accessories and a leather belt add some cool to your pretty pieces.

GIRLS NIGHT OUT They say that women don’t dress for men, they dress for other women. With that in mind, we suggest getting a little bit sexy with your outfit for the next girls night out. HOT COLOUR

It comes as no surprise that Framework is in love with one of this spring’s hottest hues... pink! Not only is pink a universally flattering colour, it screams girly. When you pair this femme shade with a gambearing leather mini, you’ll take your look from sweet to sass.

ANIMAL INSTINCTS

An animal print clutch is the perfect way to add extra flair to your outfit—and your girlfriends will adore the nod to your wilder side! Sparkly bracelets and brightly hued shoes will complete your ensemble.

ROMANTIC NIGHT OUT The man in your life should be the one who makes you feel like your most beautiful self, and a feminine frock is the perfect way to match your outer beauty with your inner confidence. For date night with your guy, be sure to keep your makeup fairly simple and clean— you want him to see you, not your fave products. DON’T FORGET TO SHINE

Instead of grabbing your LBD from the holidays, try a fresh approach to your go-to with a blush-coloured lace dress. Add some shine with a gold metallic cropped jacket— we know it’ll bring out your flirty side! Complete the look with playful accessories; this ivory belt with rose gold bow detail will add interest while a printed shoe will give you height and elongate your legs.

"STATEMENT" NECKLACE

To make a statement without a big, bold piece of jewellery around your neck, opt for a ‘Love’ necklace and let him know exactly what’s on your mind. Sometimes you just have to spell it out…

FROM LEFT: VASIA, L'NIELLE (LJ), LELE, AND JESSICA

THE GIRLS BEHINDVANCOUVER-BASEDWEDDING BLOG TUTU & FRU are a marriage of different styles and strengths. They’re a group divided into dreamers and doers— creating, capturing, and now showcasing stunning weddings for Vancouver’s brides and grooms.Together, L’nielle Pantoja,Vasia Tsonis-Han, Jessica Minnie, and Lele Chan are a force to be reckoned with—a dream team if you will. Soon to be celebrating the one-year anniversary of their blog, Framework joined the girls for high tea—and a little inevitable brainstorming—at the Tutu & Fru headquarters.Amidst a shower of confetti and flying gold sparkles, we found a deeply rooted passion for bringing local couples’ love stories to life.Read on as theTutu & Fru team shares their love forVancouver’s wedding industry, their 2013 trend predictions, and their favourite moments of your big day…

LET’S START OFF WITH A LITTLE ICEBREAKER… WE SAY WEDDING, YOU SAY? L’NIELLE: Check! VASIA: Love! JESSICA: Celebration! LELE: Champagne! WHAT DREW YOU TO THE WEDDING INDUSTRY? LJ: Growing up as the daughters of a minister, Lele and I were raised in the wedding world. It was just natural we ended up here. V: My love of weddings. After planning my own I realized that

54

framework

I didn't want it to end. I decided to combine my passion for photography with weddings and I’ve never looked back. J: Logistics, planning, and creating. Event planning is where I knew I wanted to be and wedding planning was just the icing on the cake—it tied all of my passions and strengths into one job. L: The love of a wellorchestrated event that people can’t stop talking about. CAN YOU BRIEFLY SHARE YOUR BACKGROUNDS? LJ: Before my life in the wedding world, I was in the hospitality and tourism industry working

for a wonderful seaplane company. V: I went to school for philosophy, also briefly for interior design and then for photography. J: I completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Entrepreneurial Management as well as an Event Planning Certificate while working in the food and beverage industry. I always knew I was headed in the direction of having my own business. L: I have an education in Public Relations and Graphic Design, and as L’nielle mentioned, we grew up around weddings.

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO LAUNCH TUTU & FRU? L: Initially, it was Vasia’s obsession for styled photo shoots, and my frustration at not having enough spotlight on Vancouver’s talented vendors. V: Vancouver-centric wedding inspiration was definitely missing in the blog world. We wanted to provide brides with a resource to find local talent and see what amazing things the Vancouver wedding industry is capable of; there are hundreds of incredible local wedding vendors that are hidden gems! We were also determined not to limit the blog to a specific trend in the industry; there are gorgeous weddings created from a variety of different styles and budgets and we want to showcase as many of them as we can. We saw that a lot of wedding blogs were catered towards a specific bride, like the "luxury" bride or the "vintage" bride. But if you don't have a huge budget and hate vintage styling, what do you do?

There are hundreds of incredible local wedding vendors that are hidden gems!

HOW DO YOU ENVISION THE SITE DEVELOPING IN 2013 AND IN THE FUTURE? LJ: I see the site being the wedding source for our Vancouver brides and THE site for our local vendors to submit to. J: We are nearing our one-year anniversary and as we gain more exposure, we’re becoming a more valuable tool for Western framework

Canadian brides and vendors. L: I envision Tutu & Fru becoming the hub of inspiration for Vancouver’s brides and grooms. We often look towards American or East Coast blogs and magazines, which are great, but often aren't as relevant to Vancouver couples. V: We definitely want to continue sharing lots of real weddings, and showcasing as much local talent as we can. I think for 2013 we might throw a party, so stay tuned for that! TELL US ABOUT THE MOST MEMORABLE POST ON TUTU & FRU THIS PAST YEAR… LJ: It’s hard to pick just one! “Love Story: Ada & Ed’s Engagement shoot” is one of my favorites. V: I'd say our launch post! I think we were all a little nervous, and we shared some silly images of the four of us together. J: That’s a tough one… But I specifically remember Megan and Peter captured by Lucida Photography because the bridesmaids had bare feet! L: For me, it was one of our earlier “Love Story” posts—Ivan and Greg. It was submitted by Seattle photographer Mastin Studio but featured a lovely Vancouver couple with fantastic style! The photo of them in a back alley of Gastown, in front of a colorful graffiti heart and crown, just stands out in my

head so much. It’s still one of my favourite wedding images.

J: The entire industry is a team. Yes, there is obviously competition—everyone needs L’NIELLE, AS THE TEAM’S to earn a living—but we all SOCIAL MEDIA GURU AND know the excessive and endless TRENDSETTER, WHAT KIND amount of hours each of us OF CONTENT IS MOST puts into ensuring our brides POPULAR WITH YOUR and grooms have the most READERS? memorable day of their life. IT’S GREAT TO SEE A FOCUS ON WEST COAST WEDDINGS—WHAT DIFFERENTIATES VANCOUVER AREA BRIDES? J: Overall, a slightly more laid back approach runs strong, which I think is due to many of them coming from smaller towns in the surrounding areas. L: Style. We’re not quite as edgy as East Coast brides, or as sunny and vintage as Southern California brides, and we have such a culturally diverse society! All these things together make Vancouver brides uniquely eclectic. They like to mix and match—old with new, traditional with modern, glam with DIY—but always with great style. AND HOW DO OUR LOCAL VENDORS STAND OUT? V: Local vendors are fiercely dedicated to what they do; they love Vancouver, and they love weddings!

L: Our local vendors are so talented and diverse, and are always trying to out-do themselves. Their fantastic trend-setting ideas constantly amaze me. LJ: Exactly, their creativity completely wows our brides. WHICH WEDDING TRENDS CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE THIS YEAR? LJ: The beauty and luxury of the old world mixed with modern elements. Opulence and glamour are making a comeback! V: For dresses, I definitely predict more sleeves. In decor, I think a more Bohemian style will make its way north. J: Bold patterns and colours. Also, incorporating some aspect of your relationship or lives that truly makes your wedding unique to you. L: The return of luxe, Art Deco glamour, and all that glitters.

CULTURE

ARE THERE ANY WEDDING ELEMENTS THAT SEEM TO BE MORE POPULAR ON THE WEST COAST THAN THE REST OF CANADA? LJ: Succulents, kale and artichokes. V: The West coast definitely embraced the vintage trend! And I think our landscape and location options lend well to a lot of rustic events. J: Succulents. L: Succulents—we love them! IT’S PRETTY UNANIMOUS WE’RE SMITTEN FOR SUCCULENTS! ARE THERE ANY TRENDS YOU’RE TIRED OF? LJ: Mason jars and baby’s breath. V: Curly willow branch centre pieces. J: The bouquet and garter toss— it just interrupts the party once everyone is finally fired up on the dance floor! L: I agree with L’nielle about Mason jars; they’re great for home décor, and I do love them… just not at weddings. LELE AND JESS, WHAT PART OF THE PLANNING PROCESS DO YOU MOST ENJOY? L: Finding ways to incorporate the clients’ love stories into their wedding décor.

J: When I get to tell the bride how gorgeous she looks, remind her to smile, and fix her dress right before she walks down the aisle so she can soak in every minute as she walks towards her man. L: The bride’s walk down the aisle. Everyone’s eyes are on her, and I love to watch the look in her groom’s eyes as he sees her approaching. In that moment, I see pure love. VASIA, WHAT TIPS DO YOU HAVE FOR COUPLES ON BEING PHOTO-READY? V: Get to know your photographer before the big day! Being comfortable with the person taking your photos can make a huge difference in how you look and feel in front of the camera. An engagement shoot is also a great way to prep for the wedding day photos. BEYOND TUTU & FRU, YOU ALSO COLLABORATE ON WEDDINGS AND STYLED SHOOTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. J: We each bring a different strength or talent to the team, which makes us a powerhouse. If one of us is having an extremely busy week, the rest help out by picking up the extra workload. LJ: Because all of our strengths lie in different aspects of style, design, and coordination, I find we blend together perfectly. Our personalities and styles are the perfect example of eclectic. V: L'nielle and I are the dreamers, while LeLe and Minnie are the doers! YOU’RE A PRETTY TIGHTKNIT GROUP—DO YOU HAVE NICKNAMES FOR EACH OTHER? L: I don’t know if we’re allowed to tell! I know I’m the “Fru.” V: Ha! No comment.

LJ: I think the nicknames are best kept between us… J: Agreed! Nicknames are meant to remain secret. FAIR ENOUGH! YOUR PLATES ARE FULL WITH TUTU & FRU AND YOUR RESPECTIVE BUSINESSES. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO SPEND DOWNTIME? LJ: Wine nights with the girls. No kids, no work, just good old girl gossip. V: Hanging out with my hubby and daughter, walking around Vancouver with coffee, treasure hunting in the shops, or just watching movies and reading at home. J: Yoga, hanging out with friends, and getting away—it’s the only way I can really turn off work… That said, I’m pretty

good at vacationing! L: I like to spend my free time hanging out with my husband and two daughters, lunching with girlfriends, and going for spa treatments. LASTLY, CAN YOU SHARE YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR FRAMEWORK BRIDES-TO-BE? J: Hire a planner! LJ: I agree with Jess, hire a planner. L: Framework brides-to-be have great style; just use that same style savvy when planning your wedding. Create a cohesive vision board, and this will help you choose the right vendors for your day. V: Relax and enjoy it, it goes by so fast! fw

Equally appropriate for sipping lattes or champagne cocktails , Par tyskir ts— like their originators—are game for any occasion to celebrate . We joined the social butterflies for freshly baked cookies at their downtown office (a light and air y work-live space that boasts views of Granville Island), where Mariel’s charming Boston terrier, Herb, enter tained us all with his canine antics . Posing for our camera, Lauren (29) and Mariel (24) revealed their sisterly dynamics and signature styles while sharing the Par tyskir ts stor y.

WHERE DID YOUR INTEREST IN FASHION DESIGN COME FROM? M: I always loved clothes, but I actually thought I wanted to do other things careerwise. Partyskirts started so organically; I’d sketch little dresses and have my mom whip them up on the sewing machine—this really triggered my interest in design. L: It came from my mom. She has always been really stylish. As little girls she’d sew us matching outfits and make our Halloween costumes. When I was nine years old she made me two blazers, one polka dot and one floral, and I’d tell her “wait—I want these sleeves on this jacket!” We’ve always had

fun with fashion. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU GREW UP IN A PRETTY CREATIVE HOUSEHOLD; WHAT WAS THAT LIKE? L: Yes! We had a craft closet, a sewing room, dress up trunks— we were always encouraged to be creative. M: Everything was craft related; if our parents went out for dinner and we had a babysitter we were given a box of paints or glitter and we spent the evening making things. At a young age we were taught that you don’t construct your gingerbread house with icing, you use hot glue guns because you can make something a little more extravagant!

NOW THAT IS A SIGHT TO BE SEEN! WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE LAUNCHING PARTYSKIRTS? L: I studied Fashion Marketing at Parsons The New School for Design. While in New York I was hired on by Hermès for PR and Special Events, but because I was on a Visa I started working right away in their store on Madison. I’m so passionate about their scarves and have been collecting them for years, so I told them I wanted to manage the scarf counter. By the time my Visa ran out I was hosting scarf-tying events—I have over 100 ways to tie a scarf! I came home when the 2010 Olympics started and have since worked for the Room framework

I WOULDN’T NECESSARILY HAVE GONE INTO FASHION DESIGN IF IT WASN’T FOR THE PASSION I’VE FOUND FOR PARTYSKIRTS

and Lululemon. Most of my experience is in working with luxury retail brands, and I’ve learnt a lot from that. M: After high school I went to school for makeup artistry and quickly realized it wasn’t for me, so I worked at Holt Renfrew for a year before moving to LA. I attended the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising for Merchandise and Product Development, and after graduation I worked for a few different LA-based companies on the production and design end of things. WHAT WERE YOUR FAVOURITE COURSES AT SCHOOL? M: The computer based technical drawing courses, and also the pattern drafting and sewing—I loved the hands on aspects and I’d always wanted to learn how to sew. L: My favourites were Fashion History, and also the more hands-on Merchandising classes. I was also lucky to sit in on a few of the Fashion Design classes, and I loved watching the students draw their designs— mine looked like stick people! HAS CREATING YOUR OWN FASHION LINE ALWAYS BEEN A GOAL? M: It’s really been over the last five or six years that it’s become a goal. I wouldn’t necessarily have gone into Fashion Design if it wasn’t for the passion I’ve

STYLE found for Partyskirts and our business model. That is what drives me in this industry. L: I don’t think I would ever have sat down and created my own fashion brand but we kind of stumbled upon this idea, which has really taken on a life of its own. WE HEARD IT WAS YOUR LOVELY— AND APPARENTLY FASHION SAVVY MOM— WHO CREATED THE FIRST PARTYSKIRT PROTOTYPE! WHAT SPARKED THE IDEA? L: It’s true! It was a bit of a fluke, right? M: Definitely, it was a culmination of a bunch of ideas. Our mom had been making us a ton of fit and flare dresses, and we wanted a fun, cute skirt. Bubble hems were in so we made one of those and it was a total flop! But, we chopped it off, took away what wasn’t good about it and started tweaking what was working. L: It’s definitely been edited over the years as well—it used to have a thin waistband, and now the waistband is wider. We feel like we’ve really perfected the Party Skirt; the fit is exactly how we like it and the length is exactly right… and we want to do the best job we can with this style before expanding. WHO ENCOURAGED YOU TO TURN THE SKIRTS

INTO A BUSINESS? M: It wasn’t necessarily one person, but the accumulation of so many people, and not just hearing it from our mom or a friend—going out and having twenty girls say, “I want that.” We realized, based on other girls’ reactions to the skirts, we had come up with a great idea. L: I have to say that Mariel has been keeping it going by herself for years while I’ve been doing my own thing. Over the past 5 years, I don’t know if she’s worn anything other than a Partyskirt when she goes out at night, especially while living in LA. Mariel has been carrying the Partyskirt torch for a very long time, and her passion, drive and motivation have really inspired me. We’re each other’s cheerleaders. IT SOUNDS LIKE A NATURAL PROGRESSION—HAVE YOU ALWAYS HAD ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRITS? L: Absolutely, I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur— we come from a very entrepreneurial family so that has always been encouraged— but Partyskirts really evolved on its own. WHAT IS IT LIKE LAUNCHING AND RUNNING A BUSINESS AS SISTERS? L: Mariel is cool as a cucumber

and I’m always stressed so we balance each other out. We each have different strengths and weaknesses, and I feel like we complement each other really well. Working with my sister is a great pleasure and so much fun! DO YOU HAVE DISTINCT ROLES? M: At this point in time, not necessarily. I think that is definitely something we’ll fall into, but so far I’ve been handling more of the production, shipping, and distribution, and Mariel deals more with our wholesale accounts. L: Being an entrepreneur and owning your own business, you have to know every single aspect of it, but at this point it’s pretty apparent that we have our own strengths. Eventually we will focus most on those. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WORKING WITH EACH OTHER? L: Being able to work together every single day—my sister is absolutely my best friend! Also, just knowing that we had this little seed of an idea and we’re actually doing it. We have those moments where exciting little things happen—we’ll look at each other and it’s like “thumbs up!” M: Starting a business with Lauren I realized how hard it would be to start a business with anyone else. I’m fortunate framework

79

that it doesn’t matter if we have the worst day with each other— we’re going to be fine because at the end of the day we’re sisters, we’ve had bigger fights, and we’ll get through it. AND THE GREATEST CHALLENGE? L: Spending pretty much 90% of our time together! We’ve had to adapt and learn how to work with each other, but we’ve heard from many people since starting the business that our communication has gotten so much better. THAT’S A LOVELY OUTCOME! WE’RE CURIOUS—YOUR WEBSITE SAYS PARTYSKIRTS BY SKOT

APPAREL. TELL US ABOUT THE NAME… M: Partyskirts is what we do, and it falls under the umbrella of Skot Apparel—it allows us to expand and grow in the future. L: It’s named after our brother, because with Partyskirts it’s always the two of us, and he’s sort of the missing third! AREN’T YOU JUST THE BEST SISTERS A BROTHER COULD ASK FOR! WE ADORE YOUR BRANDING; WHO IS THE PARTYSKIRT GIRL? L: Thank you; we spent a lot of time developing the brand! M: Because it’s such a versatile

piece of clothing, she could be anyone. She can be preppy, or edgy or casual—that’s what I love about Partyskirts, they don’t look the same on everyone. We’re five years apart and have very different styles— each girl has her own way of wearing one. Technically we’ve been wearing ours for five or six years now, and I’m not tired of it. A TRIED AND TRUE CLASSIC. WILL YOU GROW THE LINE TO INCLUDE MORE THAN PARTYSKIRTS? L: We spent a lot of time talking about what we wanted our company to be and the direction we wanted to grow in and how we can expand it. We’d like

STYLE

STYLE to expand into more products at a later date, like tops and bodysuits. M: Exactly—other pieces that complement both your Partyskirts and the rest of your day-to-day wardrobe. We’re always on the hunt for great basics to wear with our own skirts. CURRENTLY THE SKIRTS ARE MADE WITH A BEAUTIFUL SOLID DUPIONI SILK—WILL YOU START USING PRINTS OR OTHER FABRICS? L: Absolutely—we’re looking at prints for Fall 2013 but we’re being really picky about what we choose. They’re much harder to find in silk versus cotton, but we want our skirts to keep the level of fabric quality they have now. M: We’ve tested the skirts in prints for ourselves—and they work really well—but they’ve always been in vintage fabrics so we can’t get the quantities we need. WE’LL BE ANXIOUSLY AWAITING THE FIRST PRINTED PARTYSKIRT! IN THE MEANTIME, WHAT’S IN STORE FOR SPRING 2013? L: We’re loving poppy red— M: And my personal favourite skirt colour: yellow! L: Yes, the canary yellow, it’s

a custom dyed colour, as is the vibrant bubblegum pink—a crowd favourite. We also have a beautiful stem green and a navy blue. Just imagine a field of tulips… WE’RE IMAGINING… AND IT SOUNDS GORGEOUS. WHERE DO YOU LOOK FOR FRESH INSPIRATION? L: The biggest and best inspiration for me is travelling, and seeing what’s happening in fashion and street style in other cities. I want to see what girls are wearing in Buenos Aires and what they’re wearing on the Upper East Side of New York, and figure out how that can come together. I love things from the past so I enjoy looking

at old photos—I don’t really read print magazines much anymore but online publications like Framework and Lonny and Matchbook are great! I’m also constantly looking on blogs and I’m obsessed with Pinterest—I need to set a timer because I could be there for hours doing random searches! M: I don’t have a distinct place to find inspiration, but I’m constantly looking out for what our girl is missing in her wardrobe each season. Like what colours would add to a spring wardrobe, and what colours will be essential for a beautiful fall wardrobe. We are our target market, and we know that if we’re missing something, our friends and girls in other cities will be too.

LAUREN, WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE IN A PARTYSKIRT? L: Oh! 100% a white Brooks Brothers shirt—Non-Irons, I could buy them in bulk—a bright skirt, a pair of pumps, crystal clip-on earrings… And I always wear a little vintage croc clutch. A KINDRED SPIRIT… MARIEL, WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO WEAR ONE? M: My most go-to would be a tight, fitted black top with long sleeves, a black leather jacket, one of the darker coloured skirts—probably black—my small Proenza Schouler PS11 bag, and a pair of really high framework

heels. AND THAT IS HOW HEAD-TO-TOE BLACK IS DONE RIGHT! HOW WOULD YOU STYLE THE FRAMEWORK GIRL IN A PARTY SKIRT FOR DAY AND NIGHT? L: For day, she’d have a little cashmere shell—short sleeves, black, crew neck—one of the new Spring colours of skirts, a trench coat, and a cute pair of flats. Oh! And big, fabulous sunglasses.

L: For evening, a simple black bodysuit, a fabulous chunky necklace, and high heels. M: Maybe a crop top if she’s feeling sassy… WELL, YOU NAILED THAT STYLING CHALLENGE. IF YOU HADN’T GOTTEN INTO THE FASHION WORLD, WHAT KIND OF CAREERS WOULD YOU PURSUE?

kinds of cakes, I even took a cake decorating class. I didn’t really excel at it, but if I’d put my mind to it I probably could have gotten better. Also, I always wanted to open a cookie and ice cream shop where you make your own ice cream sandwiches, but someone beat me to it… YOU’RE GIRLS OF MANY TALENTS. WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO SEE WEARING A PARTYSKIRT?

L: I would have my own stationery company. I love everything monogrammed, and M: We would love to see M: I’d put her in a t-shirt—I I also think it’s a business and Leandra Medine from the Man would also say a trench coat—a art form that has been forgotten. Repeller and Blair Eadie from Partyskirt and flats. For evening, Atlantic Pacific wearing them. I’d style her skirt with a cute M: Baking! My favourite thing little blazer, a tank top and a to bake is cookies, but I love L: Those would be my picks as pair of heels. cakes—I’m obsessed with all well from the blog world. But

STYLE our absolute dream is to be out for dinner in New York and see a girl walk into the restaurant wearing a Partyskirt so we could go over and tell her we made it; then she’d tell us a fabulous story about getting engaged or doing something amazing in the skirt. We’re all about that “Partyskirt moment.” WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST LEARNING SINCE LAUNCHING THE LINE? AND YOUR GREATEST REWARD? L: Everything takes longer than you expect it to take, and to trust ourselves. M: Yes, at the end of the day this represents us, and we know best. The greatest reward is when things actually happen, and when we meet people who have already heard about the skirts. L: Or, when our brother takes a girl on a date and she’s wearing a Partyskirt! FRAMEWORK GIRLS FIND JOY IN SIMPLE PLEASURES; AT THE END OF THE DAY, WHAT DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO? M: Lying in bed with my Boston terrier, Herb, and eating a bag of popcorn! I go to Kernels Popcorn almost every day. L: Definitely a bubble bath. It’s the most luxurious way to end a day. fw framework

might just be one of the cutest couples we’ve had the pleasure of meeting. Each talented in their own right, Stephanie’s self-named blog-turned-business is a beautifully curated place of everyday style, photography, and graphic design. And, it wouldn’t run quite so smoothly without Neal. Always behind the scenes, this guy offers much more than the requisite boyfriend support. As a second photographer, creative consult, and finance guru, Neal is the yang to Stephanie’s yin. With a consistent point of view across the main site and Stephanie’s new print shop, it’s clear that the pair not only have eyes for design, but for each other as well. Together for five years, Toronto-based Stephanie and Neal prove that business and romance go hand in hand…

IT’S CLEAR YOU’RE SMITTEN WITH EACH OTHER! HOW DID YOU MEET? N&S: We met through mutual friends one spring, but it was several months later in July when real sparks flew and we started dating. WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT YOUR FIRST DATE? S: The butterflies, oh those butterflies! N: Her infectious smile. YOU’RE BOTH ARTISTIC—DO YOUR CREATIVE PROCESSES DIFFER FROM ONE ANOTHER? S: I work in creative chaos! When I storyboard or design, I have inspiration all over the room, whereas Neal works more neatly. N: I Agree. We also share the same aesthetic, but offer different points of view. STEPHANIE, WHAT CAME FIRST—THE PHOTOGRAPHY, THE BLOG, OR THE GRAPHIC DESIGN? S: Photography has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember, but I only recently pursued it enough to turn it into a business. I started blogging first, and from there I began to crave higher quality shots to accompany the content. I started building a photography portfolio and then finally made the big step to launch my own business in 2012. Blogging definitely

Putting myself out there on the web was initially terrifying to me, but I am so glad I did it because it has opened the door to so many great opportunities. BACKGROUND? N: Well, I’m an accountant by day and photographer by night. I went to school for accounting, but photography has always been a passion of mine. Working with Stephanie has allowed me to express that passion and create two separate worlds that oddly come together—business and the arts. CAN YOU PAINT US A PICTURE OF A TYPICAL DAY? S: No day is similar to the next for me. Before and after class I am either working on a story board with a client for the next shoot, customizing a print, researching inspiration, or at the post office shipping orders. I love that there is something new

each day—it definitely keeps me on my feet—and I have always loved staying busy and creative. N: Weekdays I’ll be found in the office crunching numbers from eight to four, and weeknights I may be doing a shoot for the website or with a client. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER? N: No, not at all. It’s all business when it needs to be, and like S: Neal feels so passionate about a switch we can flick it off and embracing my dreams. We turn on the romance when the share the same values: being time is right. Right? kind, being authentic and doing good work for good people. I S: Definitely! As Neal mentioned, we know when to shut off the phones, e-mails etc. and make time for what matters most. DO YOU EVER DISAGREE WHEN IT COMES TO THE BUSINESS? N: We don’t always agree on business matters, but a difference in opinion often results in great brainstorming and that ultimately leads to making the best decision. S: Neal and I talk everything out before making decisions, we make sure to really listen to each other. WHEN THINGS GET HECTIC, WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO DE-STRESS? S: Good food—we love to eat— and a major snuggle session with my Husky, Bandit. Anyone who knows me well knows how much I am obsessed with my wolf! N: I love putting on some music. I take a notebook and a camera— whether it’s my iPhone or SLR—with me everywhere, so that whenever I see a colour or texture that captures my attention I can document it right away. Anything from a beautiful bouquet of flowers, fashion trends, or a window display can inspire a whole entire collection. I also offer custom designs, where I work with the client to create a unique piece just for them in their choice of colours, quotes, etc.

BEST RELATIONSHIP ADVICE? Kindness and consideration are key. Before I speak or act, I always try to think about how I'd feel if the other person said or did that to me. Taking that extra minute to think about what you're saying prevents blurting out something you'll later regret!

KATE MCLEAN | omyheartkate

HOW DO YOU PAMPER YOURSELF? My favorite way to pamper myself is getting a massage! After so many hours sitting in front of the computer, it's the perfect way to relax and unwind! FAVOURITE DATE-WORTHY OUTFIT? Something that makes me feel pretty and comfortable—I don't want to be fidgeting or fussing with my outfit, I just want to relax and enjoy myself. Keeping it simple in a pretty dress and heels is my go-to; that said, it totally depends what the date is! THE THING I LOVE MOST ABOUT MY CITY IS... It's clean, pretty, and friendly! It's a capital city, but has a small town feel to it.

BEST RELATIONSHIP ADVICE? My Nana gave us some great marriage advice before we tied the knot, written on card that I keep in a frame on my nightstand. She wrote, "Always kiss each other good night." Four years of marriage later, there still hasn't been a night without a smooch. HOW DO YOU PAMPER YOURSELF? Usually with a new nail polish (it’s turned into a rather large collection), some candles, and a cup of tea. FAVOURITE DATE-WORTHY OUTFIT? I usually go with something that I feel super confident in. Luckily for me, my husband likes whatever I end up wearing. THE THING I LOVE MOST ABOUT MY CITY IS... As cheesy as it sounds, my family and friends.

PANEL BEST RELATIONSHIP ADVICE? I think it's most important to make sure that you are happy with yourself before you invite anyone else into the equation. Spending time with yourself in order to know who you are— flaws and all—will give you the ability to make yourself a graceful & functional partner. Once you have this down, you can let someone else in to keep you company and love you for who you are.

KRISTIN MACDONALD | dollparade

THE THING I LOVE MOST ABOUT MY CITY IS... The way that it feels—it's simplicity. There's something really sweet and charming about Fredericton; walking the tree lined streets always makes me feel safe, content and at home.

HOW DO YOU PAMPER YOURSELF? I usually stick to doing the things that make me most happy. They’re often really simple, but lend me a bit of time to relax and re-focus. Sitting down with a fancy coffee, treating myself to magazines and books to read in a blanket on a rainy day, or taking a drive in the country with a wicked playlist will often make me feel most pampered. It's the little things, really. FAVOURITE DATE-WORTHY OUTFIT? I love casual dates and simple do-together activities, like drinking wine and cooking dinner while listening to records. For this I wear an everyday outfit, but make sure I felt polished and classy. If I’m going out, I usually turn the volume up on the fancy factor and wear a flouncy circle skirt with sky-high pumps.

BEST RELATIONSHIP ADVICE? If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. HOW DO YOU PAMPER YOURSELF? I'm obsessed with hair and face masks, and do them at least once a week. I also get manicures pretty regularly! FAVOURITE DATE-WORTHY OUTFIT? I don't have a specific go-to date outfit, but I always make sure to complete my look with a pair of gorgeous high heels.

WHITNEY COSGRAVE | seeshopeatdo

THE THING I LOVE MOST ABOUT MY CITY IS... I live in Santa Monica and I love that I'm never too far from the ocean. That's my favorite thing about Vancouver as well.
