Benvenuti! Immigration is nothing new! Just think: 2,800 years ago famines, wars, climate change, and overcrowding incited waves of ancient Greeks to forsake their lands and seek out new homelands, which they found in the southern coastal regions of the Italic peninsula—Magna Graecia or ‘Greater Greece’. Greek language, religion, cuisine, culture were exported to the Italic peninsula, laying the foundations of the Roman Empire and, hence, western civilization. New waves of Greek immigrants washed upon the shores of the boot during the Ottoman Conquest. So if you are come from southern Italian decent, you are probably Greek! Between the 8th–3rd centuries BC, a Hellenic civilization sprang up as Greek colonizers interacted with the preexisting Italic civilizations. The Greek culture did not end with Roman domination but rather blended and evolved. Take wrestling, for example, which was a popular form of martial art in ancient Greece and Magna Graecia. When the Romans conquered the Greeks, wrestling was absorbed into the Roman way of life. It is said that an Italian wrestler first coined the term “Greco-Roman” wrestling, which is an Olympic sport. During the early Middle Ages (5th-10th centuries), war forced Greek Christians to seek refuge in the south of the Italic peninsula, since it was governed by the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire. The fall of its capital Constantinople to the Turks in the 15th century brought a new wave of Greek scholars who settled the entire Italic peninsula, playing a crucial role in the Renaissance. In this issue, we explore the ancient Greek foundations of Italy and how they continue to influence fashion today, particularly in pockets of southern Italy like Calabria. We also take a close look at how combat sports are growing in popularity among Italians, instilling the values of determination, dedication, and desire to overcome. We too can learn from the ancients. Similar to Julius Caesar, who spoke the Latin phrase—Veni, vidi, vici (‘I came, I saw, I conquered’)—if we prepare ourselves, with a little perseverance we can examine our hardships in life and turn them around into a sweet swift victory! We must merely refuse to give up! Francesco 6

Feature Story
The blood of Rome flows through his veins, its ancient flames burning in his dark eyes. Every battle, every challenge, every loss, every win is marked in his eyes like a fearless legionnaire who challenges his opponents with strength and determination. Alessio Sakara has never surrendered to difficulties—an example to those in limbo with no way out, the giant in the Ultimate Fighting Championship of formidable strength and physical stature but good in heart. What better warrior to interview him than Julius Caesar, whose quotes are etched in time. “In the end you will become what everyone thinks you are.” All my life I had to learn from an early age, let’s say from 14, to believe in myself through situations that left me at a disadvantage, due to certain circumstances. This benefitted me because I’ve come to the conclusion that, if you want to obtain something, you really can have it even if there are obstacles to overcome. “If you want peace, prepare for war.” In contact sports, if you find serious trainers who teach the right philosophy, this can change and save a lot of individuals; it helps at a young age to grow up with principles. Basically a contact sport teaches respect to ourselves and, therefore, to all. It teaches that, with each hit, you have to react—a kind of metaphor for life—but above all there are no excuses when you fight. You have to be ready. You cannot climb into the ring unprepared—it’s the same in everyday life. “You too, Brutus, my son?” Unfortunately it is so, our ancestors were not wrong, as Caesar said. Since I started, many people close to me were initially always on my side; then many distanced themselves and changed. I think that sooner or later the truth about a person comes out with time, but I believe in meritocracy and that you reap what you sow in life.

“Men willingly believe what they want.” I think it’s important to help people less fortunate than ourselves; I started with Assohandicap because the manager was a friend of mine, so I knew that his project was serious. After speaking, we agreed on several points and we developed a number of social projects. Now in our events we always try to help nonprofit organizations. We shouldn’t wait for a misfortune to happen to understand the suffering of the less fortunate. We should help our neighbor when we can. “Upon learning this news, an intense sudden fear invaded Rome.” Fears must not drag you down. Each encounter is unique, and certainly we know that each victory brings us one step forward. But if we lose even in defeat, we have much to learn and certainly grow. Fears are always about not being able to achieve a certain result, not succeeding. So when we fight, the primary opponent is ourselves! “Divide and conquer!” I want to disseminate as much as possible the discipline of Mixed Martial Arts in Italy, making everyone understand the philosophy of a professional fighter correctly. Therefore, I run a sports association and some teams throughout the entire peninsula with valid teachers that I have trained. Above all, they are serious masters who pass onto the student the method and right approach to life. “I have lived long enough to satisfy both nature and glory.” Every morning I look in the mirror to say “I can do it!” I haven’t arrived yet at what I want to be and that’s the beauty of my daily life: to make every day a step closer to my goal! “I came. I saw. I conquered.” One of the most important values is determination, without which we can’t grasp our dreams. But above all we must never fail at being a fighter; our sport is one that puts you in front of the bare raw truth. During the last match, I broke my biceps tendon and, had it not been for the doctor, I would have continued with one arm less, as I have always done since my first encounter. I fight with the same enthusiasm and determination as when I started. Alea iacta est ‘The die is cast’ — Julius Caesar 10

A pounding heart, time, strength, power and speed, coordination, precision and balance. Fatigue takes over and drives you to fight against your greatest enemy: yourself. Blisters on your hands, scratches on your knees. No, it’s not pain but gain. Because after making the effort, you get up and you know that you did it. You tried and stood the test, having thought it would never end. As in life, so it is in the mind that refuses to surrender to defeat. This is growth. This is CrossFit. Through the eyes of the Tuscan coach Alessio Piccolo, we can understand why this discipline, which was born in America, is constantly gaining more popular ground in Italy. “When CrossFit arrived to Italy for the first time, none of us had really understood it. But its powerful components gave us an impression of real effort and sacrifice. “Then as it is now, CrossFit for Italians was an unusual proposal because it went against everything that we had long taken for granted: free body exercises that require the sacrifice and precise technique which belong to the old schools of weightlifting and gymnastics. “Now this new figure called the ‘CrossFit Coach’ is the spokesman of an open source, web based laboratory, which is organized and operates only with the presence of a passionate and dedicated community. Certification is merely the first step for the instructors who take on the arduous task of building a CrossFit community. “A ‘box’ owner is fortunate to meet marvelous athletes who are the driving forces of CrossFit throughout the world. It is said that Italians are people of great warmth and intelligence, so it would be unthinkable that such a people not participate in this growing international community.” By Francesco Cilidonio and Alesso Piccolo.

Four Tips for Male Athletes You want long hair but cannot stand it when you sweat. You can get a double cut or undercut (buzzed sides), so that the longer hair on top falls over the shaved sides. In this way, the hair on the nape will not be saturated with sweat. You like to keep you hair short but don’t know how to wear it. A nice short tapered look on top is not bad, so the advice that I would give you is to comb it slightly into a crest if you want to change the look a bit. Just do not cut it less than half an inch. You have curly hair and like to keep it long. You can layer the hair, giving the cut a round effect, and cut the area around the neck to avoid being soaked with sweat. I recommend thinning it out a bit if it is thick and falls too much. I think that, if you want to have a curly look, it is better voluminous and wild. You don’t like your hair too short or too long. You can have your hair cut with clippers or scissors so that it is not too shaven, leaving it at about an inch in length. On top, you can leave the hair unkempt with a very natural style, maybe pushing the front up slightly.

4 Tips for Athletic Women You hate when you hair falls on your face. The simplest choice for you is to tie it back, but a sloppy job is not nice to look at. I advise straightening and moisturizing the hair with anti-frizz oil, then tying it back with something of transparent elastic so that it’s neat. This is perfect for very long hair. The ideal color for this style? Dark brown or brown. You want to be sexy. If you have the ideal face for a fringe, then I advise it, maybe sported with shoulder-length hair and no more. You could leave it loose on top and free from mid lengths to the ends. The effect is very hot if embellished with a touch of makeup. The ideal color: auburn or red copper. You hate the usual ponytail and want to be more alternative. Why not! This year Afro influences are very much in fashion, so why not be stylish with a nice frisè from braiding?! This way, you will be alternative and fashionable all at once. The ideal color: light or medium blond. You love a natural chic style. A beautiful fishtail braid is what I suggest, or alternatively French braids that that are pinned back so as not to have any hair on your neck. The ideal color: dark brown, dark blond, or light brown with a hint of golden copper.

The ideas came in a natural way, by developing an alternative type of ‘remake clothes’ and performing techniques that, until then, I had used for my work as a cool hunter of new trends and processing for leather and leather goods. “The intent was to mix my knowledge, experimenting on the fabric and what I already knew about leather, creating unique and innovative garments at the same time. This collection is the result of the synergy between the past and present. Craftsmanship and experimental processes come together to create unique garments of this kind. Used items return to life with a modern and refined look: a collection of pieces created in limited editions, according to the philosophy of the WYWoL brand. “In July 2014 our first store was opened in Florence. Exploring the two worlds—Leimoticon and Toys—we immersed ourselves in a dreamlike world that permitted us to interpret the collections in a playful way. Worlds linked to a childlike imagination, free for interpretation. Who is SuperLeit in this collection? Angelo Cruciani Army of Love
“This season Angelo Cruciani presents a conceptual and artistic collection, which was created to reinvent the concept of military: an army of love. It’s time for new rules, new aesthetics, and new philosophies. “The kingdom of love expands day by day in many ways: padlocks that invade the city and monuments, Madonna and her Love Revolution, chats in search of soul mates, a valentine that invades the whole calendar. The world thus declares that it still needs fairy tales, while everything runs and becomes technology—love is back in fashion.

“Even men want to show their heart, a classic iconic symbol of the female wardrobe. This limited edition has been rigorously designed and created according to symbolic elements that reinterpret the uniform: marines, generals, high military uniforms from different cultures to defend one state—that of feelings. Contradictions generate new horizons: weapons and feelings, uniforms and freedom, rules and romance; this collection was born from the utopian dream of an army that protects humanity. “Pink and black are the main colors that alternate like a Taoist contrast in the texture of fabrics, strictly printed and brocaded allover with hearts. Feminine fabrics like viscose and silk are mixed with male nylons and neoprene, enriched with jacquard weave and flock prints. The collection was then decorated and dressed up with accessories that disrupt the military symbols: hearts everywhere and symbols of peace and brotherhood: this army also loves the enemy.”

For instance, some articles are scented with the peel of bergamot, giving the wearer an intense fragrance that arouses curiosity and fascination. “We are in love with the Costa Viola, which is a long stretch of the Tyrrhenian seacoast, surrounded by wild nature and the purple highlights of the sea—all of which is framed by the blue of the sky, the colors of the earth, the yellow of broom shrubs and the sun, the various shades of citrus, and the variegated colors of the Mediterranean. “Between Villa San Giovanni and the Ionian Coast there is a citrus, the bergamot—an intense fragrance that gave us a lot of inspiration in designing the ‘Zagara clutch’. From the beginning, our philosophy has been to provide the market with ‘green’ materials, such as fabrics of wood and cork, positioning us in the range of ethical luxury. “Cork is soft, smooth, and pliable. We use it a bit in all our products, especially in the construction of ties, clutches, bow ties, and lifestyle accessories. Wood is set on a foundation of cotton, whereas the wooden part is laser etched through special techniques in such a way as to make it foldable and similar to the skin. “The message we want to convey is that you can be elegant in an ethical manner. Clearly our products possess characteristics that cannot be classified as cheap since they are made in Italy and worked by hand with materials of a high quality.”

The Temple of Segesta Prior to the arrival of the ancient Greeks, much of the Italic peninsula had been populated by various indigenous tribes, such as the Etruscans, from whom the region Tuscany derived its name. Similar to those in the south, the Elymians, who founded Segesta, were soon assimilated into the Greek culture, language, and way of life. As a symbol of the city’s prosperity, the temple most likely broke ground in the 5th century BC but was never completed.

The Temple of Hiero The Greek king Hiero II of Syracuse (269-216BC) built this enormous altar, which was large enough to sacrifice 450 bulls to Zeus, the Liberator. Although it is the largest surviving altar from Greek antiquity, today only the base remains of the immense temple-like structure, which was surrounded by porticoes.

Acetaia Sereni Black Drops of Gold Snuggled cozily by the rolling hills of Villabianca, in an area far from industrial pollution, is Acetaia Sereni, one of the historic producers of balsamic vinegar, also known as “the black gold of Modena.

acetaia sereni
How did Acetaia Sereni start its production? The production of our balsamic vinegar was born in an often similar way of many Modena families: as passion and family tradition. Only in the 1980s, with the birth of the Consortium of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar Producers, did Pier Luigi Sereni begin marketing it. What is the difference between wine vinegar and balsamic vinegar? The difference lies in their substance and methods of production. Wine vinegar has a strong acidity; in fact, the higher the acidity, the better the quality. Balsamic vinegar is sweet and sour. What is balsamic vinegar’s essential substance? Two ingredients are used to produce Balsamic: the cooked “must” of grapes over a direct fire, which ages in barrels of wood for many years and—of course—the air of Modena! How do you achieve perfect balsamic vinegar? Good balsamic requires a suitable environment; in other words, ventilated, dry with a strong temperature range, excellent barrels constructed in a workmanlike manner that give us a guaranteed seal for a long time, a good cooked grape “must” at the start and every year for the traditional topping, and lots of patience.
CUISINE
Is there a way for consumers to judge the quality? To judge a balsamic, one must consider several parameters: look, smell, and taste. Some features taken alone can make us believe that we are faced with a fine balsamic, but not always so. Take the density as an example: it is true that mature balsamic is thick and syrupy, but sometimes a dense balsamic doesn’t mean it’s mature. Surely one of the key features obtained only through years of maturation is the fragrance, which must be frank, pleasant, fruity, and harmonious. So what is the ideal age? Difficult to answer…each manufacturer has its own recipes, traditions, and habits. Surely to sell it as Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena D.O.P, it must age a minimum of 12 years! Once opened, how should it be stored? When opened, it can be stored at room temperature, without special instructions. Maybe it’s best to avoid extreme temperature changes. Why is this “black gold of Modena” so valuable? It once represented the heritage of Modena’s families. It was produced with great care and love, and it was handed down from generation to generation. There existed no similar product in the world! Today the balsamic vinegar of Modena is accessible to everyone, even if the extra old one remains a valuable product intended for connoisseurs.

What makes balsamic vinegar unique? Balsamic vinegar is ONLY from Modena and Reggio Emilia. It is produced only in these areas and there exist no others. The “secret” that has made it so popular is precisely the particular sweet and sour taste, which can characterize even the simplest dishes. Fresh out of the bottle or cooked, which is best? When we have a good balsamic, it is always better to use it raw so as not to lose flavor during cooking. Are there any limitations in its uses? Today balsamic is used really on all dishes, from appetizers to desserts. Younger balsamic is fresh for salads and vegetables; the more mature ones for first dishes, risottos, and meat fillets; while the extra matured ones, for desserts. Examples? A simple frittata with leeks and a few drops of balsamic…. Carpaccio with shaved Parmesan cheese, fresh arugula, and balsamic vinegar…. Risotto alla parmigiana with balsamic…. And a simple fast dessert for guaranteed success: ice cream with extra aged balsamic! What dish should never lack it? Surely salads. How about on fruit? Of course! On strawberries, melon, fruit salads, ice cream, desserts…. Interview by Federica Fatale.
