Experiment and dialogue
Each project always comes out from a narrative will and “since the stage of meta-project, volumes, surfaces and materials begin to interact, influencing inevitably the architectural composition” because declining the materials, according to Francesco Steccanella, means producing vibrations. Born in 1971, architect, he works at the University of Udine and has a studio in Portogruaro where, with several collaborators, develops architecture projects, Interior design and renewal of public places. Francesco Steccanella describes his professional career and the way to do architecture certainly starting from the materials but never without narrative.
Let’s start with his professional career. It has inevitably influenced his way of doing architecture. “I have worked for 7 years at the University of Venice filling and occupying myself with architectural composition; today as PhD student at University of Udine; I collaborate on the courses of design and technology. To me there is no composition without technology; I consider it essential for an architect not to be deficient in any of the two disciplines. I tend to use the materials in a very agile way: metals, wood and stone materials decline unequivocally the volumetric and spatial composition of my work. It is not possible to me to conceive a project and then apply an indefinite cover; since the stage of meta-project, volumes, surfaces and materials begin to interact, defining the composition. Naturally, I try to deepen the very knowledge of materials, to use them properly and make them meaningful.”
In which of the projects that you have made there is the most obvious cardinal role of the materials? “An example is the stand designed this year for the company Il Casone (Marmomacc). I started from the desire of removing gravity from stone, making it lighter; so I thought of reducing it in small foils and compose a curtain. I wanted to show that with stone you can also build conventional partition walls as well as hanging light partitions, curtains that separate but do not close, rattles that work with the touch of a hand. Something like this, we find it in the shop Athos in Portogruaro: a C-shaped with a long corridor transformed in showcase, and spaces modified through wooden coating; strips stacked randomly with cut-lights between the one and the other, which spread in split-lines permeating all spaces. The result is a sort of visual “vibration”: the combination of irregular wood deforms the space depriving it from its hierarchy.
Thus, research and creativity characterizes his projects. Even those for more traditional ambient, such as the residential or public spaces? “At the beginning of each job, I spent a lot of time on the site, I absorb its instances combining them with my designing ideas. Each project can not only be generated by a volumetric idea, but also by dialoging with the context: it always comes out from a “narrative” intention. Plaza Matteotti, Concordia Sagittaria, was a vital space for the urban vitality context and life;
my intervention was meant to realize walls with the aim of separating the narrowing road while containing the peace of the town through pedestrian areas and gardens. The very same bank river, realized in Corten, wants to communicate with its rust-likeappearance the revenge of the water over the embankments.
Being a young architect, what does it mean today in Italy? and abroad? “One of the problems, in Italy, is that, especially for public works, an architect can be chosen mostly because of political and entrepreneurial reasons, and less on the basis of an evaluation of real skills. Even though some remarkably exceptions still exist. So, this does not mean that good architecture can not be done, but it is essential to establish a constructive relationship with wise and open-minded customers. With the experience that I had abroad, I’ve been evaluated by customer comity that took into consideration my design concepts. This is the case of the refurbishing the National Library and the National Museum of Chad, and a project for a hotel in Corfu Greece.”

It can be adapted to spaces different in shape and size, such as rectangular, L-shaped or long and narrow spaces. The elements can be placed in the center in order to divide it as well as they can be placed against a wall in order to hide the dressing rooms or the warehouse in between. In this project the carved sculpture is placed in the center of the space in order to divide it into three, following the program, that requested to create an area for the luxury brand, one for the Italian fashion brand and one for the bar.

This is an interior design project for a jewelry shop in the seaside town of Jesolo, near Venice. The shop is located in a corner lot and has two long glass showcases. The design is based on the idea of hierarchy and geometry developed through the combination of white painted wood modular elements of 55x55x22 cm. The exhibitors are hung, individually or in group, on the walls; the same elements are hung from the ceiling for hide the lighting system.
1 The exhibitor is placed in the center of the space and divide it into 4 spaces.
2 The exhibitor is placed against the wall, in order to hide the dressing rooms and warehouse. Suitable for narrow and L-shape spaces.
3 The exhibitor is placed in the center of the space and it hides the dressing rooms. Suitable wide open spaces.

UP_PESO Pavilion
Sculpture, construction, protection; lytic, firm, solid. I would like to make the stone cladding float, to hang it, to reduce it into small plates to compose a curtain; I would like that these floating sheets, if cherished, could produce a lytic sound. I would like to perceive the stone as sound. The inlays of wood, metal and glass of the floor and walls are a tactile experience, as a pedagogical table aimed to perceive the different surface grains and temperature, and assimilate the sensations that the materials convey. The image comes after, at the beginning other senses are involved. What if... instead of foundation and solid wall, the stone became a hanging surface? What if architecture and stone design were able to participate in the process of sustainability and recovery of waste materials? What if the ancient construction material, a symbol of stability, weight and strength, was free from the constraint to become what traditionally could not be? For the design of the pavilion, the company “Il Casone” chooses the architect Francesco Steccanella, which welcomes the heritage of two great artists such as Kengo Kuma and Claudio Silvestrin interpreting the proposed theme with freedom and agility so as to transform the pavilion in playful moment, in a pedagogic table, a music box, for color and tactile sensations. Steccanella based the concept of the project on the removal of the force of gravity: “I would like to make (the stone) float, hang it, reduce it to small plates to compose a curtain,” referring to the sandstone (pietra serena) marketed by “Il Casone”. Steccanella proposes a reinterpretation of the traditional elements through the composition of vertical hanging curtains and horizontal multicolored elements fixed vertically to the ground. The sandstone is part of a playful,
almost pedagogical, experiment, which reveals the essence through the sensory experience of the visitor. The visitor can touch the surface of the slabs, can hear the sound of thin hung sheets touching in rhythmic succession, can see the colors of the stone that overlap horizontally. The three elements of the pavilion are resting on a floor that marks the distribution of the stand, almost a mosaic that leads the tour. The surface is divided into three bands: the central one leads to the meeting room and the warehouse and it is crossed by a stone wall forcing the visitor to an immediate contact with the protagonist material. If it is true that gravity holds the secret of lightness, it is easy to understand how even the stone can be transformed into a curtain, formed by thin mobile strips. These floating curtains of stone and light, sound and architecture make the stone so close to music and literature, being connected to Milan Kundera’s equivalence between weight and constriction, lightness and freedom; or to the opposition between lightness and weight in Italo Calvino’s first lecture at Harvard University in 1984. [...]. It may seem unusual that comparison between such different worlds. But Calvino’s change of approach is exactly the same that drives this project aimed at finding a new method of knowledge of a material inextricably linked to the tradition of Tuscan architecture. The lightness of the stone that is suspended in the air can be read also in terms of sustainability. To the detriment of the cultural tradition that privileges an architecture of massive curtain walls and solid elements, Steccanella and “Il Casone” want to give priority to a lower utilization of material through the production of semi-transparent textures made of “recycled stone.” Sara Benzi, www.architetturadipietra.it School of Architecture, University of Ferrara, 2009

The museum We were asked to develop the interior design project for the new museum in the capital city of Ndjamena. The museum houses the most important national archeological finding: the “Toumai. About the rest of the collection, we had few informations; so we designed different exhibitors that could house objects with different sizes. The permanent exhibition occupies two levels, while the temporary one occupies the ground floor. To give continuity to the entire building we designed a wood container painted black that houses all services and separates the exhibition area from other spaces (entrance, hall, auditorium, offices).

Library We were asked also to develop the interior design of the main library in Ndjamena. The building already exists and it is very similar to the museum. At the ground floor there is the main hall with bar, cloak room, conference hall. In the underground level we placed the archives and the mediatheque, while at the first and second level there are the reading halls open to the public. Floors, ceilings and lighting system have already been made by local architects, so we choose only the colour of the walls. All the furniture is in natural wood and black painted metal designed by us, except for the chairs.

The project area is on a corner lot between Via Colombo and Via Nobile, the last lot remained free, oriented north-west; the new building will necessarily dialogue with existing ones. Each apartment of the new complex will have an independent access, parking and patios. The project consists of two volumes that have different rotations and are parallel to the streets, enclosing an inner court with gardens; the lower volume, oriented north-south, penetrates into the higher volume, oriented east-west, and extends beyond, ending in the stairwell. The higher volume stretches the roof to completely cover the smaller building. The volumes are deconstructed, fragmented, excavated, but maintain the identity of the generating forms.

The complex is spread along the axis road, drawing a filiform element that welcomes, despite its distinct personality, the interference from nearby buildings. The volume on the front road goes down and protects a pre-existing unit. The system of pillars that connects the two parts of the structure appears like irregular stems that defuse its materiality. Continuing north we encounter other interferences, where the top roof goes down and the balcony gets closer to the main side liberating part of the original facade, creating a volumetric disconnection. The first floor and the mansard roof along with the parapets of the terraces with their massivness interact with the velocity; from the other hand the ground floor is a system of voids, a permeable front dedicated to perceptivity which binds to the slowness. A driven path, punctuated with materials of different density, towards the internal court and new terraced houses, reinterpretation of the Dutch contemporary.

Identity House
Francesco Steccanella realized a home that does not come to compromises with the surrounding suburban area. He turns the interferences into design propositions. Who knows what Calvino would say today going through the lower right riverside of the Tagliamento river, suspended between Friuli and east Veneto region. From the beautiful landscape descriptions of Ippolito Nievo the boundless plain to the sea has changed a lot. No more desolated spaces, no more swamps that intersect with the lagoons of the northern Adriatic sea. As first the swamps drying at the beginning of the last century, then the booming of the Sixties, then the economic adventure of the Italian Northeast have disseminated this part of Italy with infrastructure, industries, workshops and types of small villas. A complete occupation of the whole soil, which created on an extended urban context, which in many places completely replaced the rural aspect. A growth that seamless assimilates small towns, medium and big Italian cities. Our continuum consists of nonspecific aspect of the peripheral urban area. But in Portogruaro, historical, logistical and industrial center of the Eastern Veneto region, Francesco Steccanella conceived a house that does not come to compromise with its surroundings, reacts with character and transforms the interferences into design propositions. he does not rely on traditional building technologies. DEFENSE IN CORNER Forced between the sonic impact of railway line Venice-Trieste and a dry-
lifting system of the drainage consortium, Grillo’s home is situated on the corner of the lot, as a boxer on the ring, ready to halt the offenses coming from outside. This location allows the young designer to use the most of the southern front, opening it towards the garden. The railway line becomes an element that varies in the landscape, maintained at the maximum possible distance. The construction of the volumes is articulated around to a dorsal spine placed along the axis east-west, consisting of the access corridor. Towards the south it approaches a low volume becoming a container of daytime activities and open to the light. A two floor structure, under whose barrel roof are the bedrooms, is connected to it on the opposite side. The volumes that results from that structure is simultaneously simple and metaphysics, beyond fashions. Pure geometries that guarantee the maximum efficiency in the management of the day light and that allow you to close almost completely the north side, as a barrier to north winds. HYBRID SYSTEM To realize this construction, Francesco Steccanella chose a hybrid dry system, searching for an alternative way to the raging logic of cement bricks. Home Grillo’s has a stainless steel supporting structure, not conspicuous, which is contained within the blocking boxed structure. A multi-layer sandwich devised reworking and adapting the wooden technology of the balloon framing. A heart made of insulating material sandwiched between different types of external skins (metal for the roof, horizontal wooden axis not treated for external closures) and internal finishing plasterboard are combined with the
frames made with softwood studs. A light “stick and box” construction, that guarantees both the insulation of the interiors and the ventilation of the external walls. And that expresses a clear research desire, even ecological. At the ground level the access to the garden is made through a large patio, which borders the lowest volume. The transitional element, in part arbour expands the internal space, emphasizing the theme of conviviality expressed by the dining area. This approaches towards the outside thanks to the invitation of the non-orthogonal east wall, which hosts a large opening with unusual pivot shutters with horizontal closure. A slightly offset varying the perspectives. On the flat roof of the volume facing south, Steccanella creates an hanging garden, partially returning what that took away the ground. Closed between the elements that organize the house and its extensions, the green area becomes a small court, a private and intimate element that gives an absolute dimension to the whole. To the outside world, just few things. A defensive access protects Grillo’s home from the bustle coming from the contiguous suburbs. Pointing at once, with a rigorous design and refined details that inside there is another world. Luca Maria Francesco Fabbris “Costruire” nr. 272, Editorial, January 2006 - Publisher Segesta Milan

riverside of the Lemene river. This territorial evolution was not followed though by a simultaneous adjustment of the traffic roads and the urban renovation. We therefore note the inability to break away from certain functions that for better or for worse characterize the use, inability to modify an existing urban structure, trying to use the resulting spaces, designing those “white” areas beyond the prevasiveness of the viability. Deliberately, no attempt was made to make uniform and bearable the live together; instead, the attention was given to the “lost opportunities”; lost opportunities indeed, in those truisms sometimes a little too expected. There is often the thought or feeling to say “if instead of the road there was…” and then why not looking for these occasions. The project comes from this emotions: the idea of making the urban spaces uniform, eradicate the viability to return the spaces to the “Concordians”, the front river, the gardens, the secondary road made livable for and belonging to the town; to organize the paths, to create with small inclinations the articulated, recurrent and recognizable scenarios; spaces made intimate with small changes in altitude, direction and function. Thus, a green system, a plaza full of plants which substitutes the asphalt; the system with sliding levels with grass, defines the spaces, organizes them, giving value to certain places denying it to others. The system creates a hierarchy of spaces that
spread over the whole area of Piazzale Matteotti. The road, at this stage was reintroduced, reducing to the minimum the allocated space. The system of sliding levels turns to the road to welcome and convoy the vehicles taking their belonging, raising concrete walls to perceive the intrusion on the urban system. At the end the project assumed the form and the evocative meaning of a concatenation of urban environments closely interconnected with one another; intimate spaces – to enjoy the peace of the river, sometime isolated – to sit quietly, often barycentric to collect and convey the users, never without meaning, but always looking to follow, support and suggest the actions expressed into it. The recent expansion of the city of Concordia has invaded the left bank of the river Lemene; in this area, despite the fact that there are many municipal offices, a school complex and several craft activities, there is a lack of facilities (infrastructures, walkways, cycle paths, parking lots), and the area generally appears as fragmented and degradated. The project, consisting of sloping walls at different heights, aims to implement the green area, articulate new walking paths, connect new cycle paths with existing ones, separate pedestrian and vehicular traffic both physically and visually through inclined walls. The walls are 1 meter high to allow the view towards the river; benches are hang on the walls.

The project aims to draft a “network of historic and archaeological routes that will cover the entire grounds of the ancient Roman city. These routes, indicated by walkways, reach the monumental area of the historical center, the archaeological area of the Thermae (III century a.c.), the remains of houses, the theater, the wells and the remains of a bridge (attributable to the I, II, century a.c.). Thematic routes, alternative to the main roads, will consist of pedestrian streets and tree-lined paths. Along the routes, they will be reassembled and brought to light fragments and ancient relics.

Town hall square and Lemene river’s right bank renewal
40 Italian Architects under 40 - Young designers in Exhibition Special edition of the magazine “Costruire” Ancient roman colony of the Adriatic sea, Concordia Sagittaria is today a small town with very important archaeological witnesses to its history; it has always been linked to the Lemene river as element connecting to the sea. Francesco Steccanella (with Jacopo Zanchi) awarded the competition for the renewal of the municipal plaza and the right bank of the river with this beautiful project, completely based on the horizontality. Working on the details, like in a bas-relief he designs leveling of a few centimeters. The result originates different levels, that despite being coplanar, give new quality to the important buildings on the square. Where he does not use the trachyte, he operates with the metal like, for example, on the watershed or on the floor lighting. Objects involved with new terms, which connect the various points of the project, organizing it by according functionality rather than by hierarchies. The road that leads to the bridge becomes in that way a terrace on the riverside with a linear seating system on which ancient rests adapt themselves, while the waters of the Lemene river lap the wooden pier with its actual and net profile. The modernity embraces the memory. . Luca Maria Francesco Fabbris “Costruire” nr. 269, October 2005 - Segesta Publisher Milan

The project is a reconfiguration, or rather a restoration of the urban open space: it aims to reconnect slopes and connect or separate spaces. It is based on the “modesty” of the intervention: the desire to do as little as possible, not only for a programmatic minimalism, but even for a “semantics economy.” The urban space in the Via Roma, called since the late forties of the last century “town square”, while in the economic and physical constraints, tries to present itself as a horizontal sculpture, made of a single material (strips of trachyte stone); the urban furniture is coordinated (benches-lampsbaskets) to become a sort of Ariadne’s thread that accompanies the visitor and inextricably linked to the various functional areas, from the Basilica to the “port” on the river. The inclusion of the archaeological remains of the Roman era in the urban space means including them in the city life, expanding the “museum”, adding a new “room” and reorganizing the existing.
Piazza Roma Concordia Sagittaria VE
Piccinato Award third Edition _ 2007 Design the complexity Award for urbanistic and territorial planning I decided not to propose high building elements, three-dimensional, and sculptural: the project covers only a reconfiguration or rather a restoration of urban land. The urban space coincides with via Roma, called since the late forties of the last century “town square”, it tries to present itself as a horizontal sculpture, a bound of surfaces clearly identifiable, close to each other, fitted together, but not united. All the natural stone cladding tends to be a single material, the furniture is controlled and organized in a close link between the benches-historical artifacts-lighting system-trash cans to become the direction of the path, like an Arianna’s thread that accompanies the visitor and inextricably links the different functional areas, from the space in front of the Basilica to the harbor on the river. The inclusion of the archaeological remains of the Roman Era within the urban life, gives us the concept of an element that detects the wealth of local resources, and continues what already happens in the great space excavated in the open area where resurface the ancient remains, a sort of exhibition hall. Indeed this is the aspect that we wanted to emphasize; with discretion we attempted to expand the “museum”, add a “room”. With discretion, we said, but also careful not to create an improper space, too delicate; it still remains an area that needs to guarantee defined fruitions, a space of the citizens that they must interpret. We want to think that young people, maybe, can still meet in the evening sitting on the wall along the river rather than on the benches, or that the fisherman can simply feel comfortably in peace. In short, the
attempt to give real value to a common place of urban life. The fountain and the monument, as elements considered characteristic of urban space, will contribute to the success of this definition .. The theme is the reorganization of an complex architectural system, formed by the confluence of the various structures: the square of the Baptistery, the spaces of the market, the terrace on the river, the harbor area and, not least, the access and parking driveway. Opposed to this fragmentation is a strong intention of unity. Davide Longhi Edited by Veneto Region - IT

The key point of the project proposal concerns the availability of two areas, in the north and south of the band occupied by the building of the Discarica. This choice, as well as allowing a more gradual connection of the open spaces with the topography, allows us the planting of trees with root systems of great consistency. In both areas are located parking lots, hidden by the fold of the soil, and are planted trees of wild fruit species with two different arrangements: linearly or located within precincts, accessible to the public, reminiscent of walled orchards. In each of these areas have been provided two ponds and artificial reservoirs, bounded with reeds. The area is crossed by pedestrian paths; the “rooms” that will be created are fences of different sizes, used for sports or leisure (i.e. to skate and play). The perimeters of the “rooms” are made from stone gabions. The “stars” are small natural and shady resting places. The rooms and the stars allowed us to draw a landscape between artifice and nature and dialogue with what exists.

The area towards the Sile river, freed of the bus station buildings and facilities, will be converted to public open space for pedestrian and bicycle, equipped with resting areas. The car park, realized at a lower level, becomes minimally invasive. The bastion is reconnected through stairs placed at the top of the perimeter of the ancient walls, a third block of stairs is positioned centrally to the area. The area of the former gasometer is converted to a park equipped with gravel paved paths. The gasometer stores are emptied and, keeping only the outer walls, are converted into thematic gardens.Three multi-storey housebuildings are arranged on the north-south axis of the lot, between the bastion and the area below, creating a feeling of connection between the two levels. The main facades of the buildings, raised on pillars, free the ground level for the benefit of the public. To strengthen the connection with the city, a path was placed in a central position that connects the bastion with Viale Cadorna, through a new pavement and a series of green areas. A cyclepedestrian bridge allows the crossing of the river and the connection between the two new poles.
The project follows the program; the single volumes, with different program, are autonomous and connected by a common urban path. The classrooms are in a three storey building at the end of the path; the laboratories are autonomous and accessible through the path.

Since the first visit on site, it appeared clear that the project area is extremely fragmented and without hierarchy; moreover the presence of the road creates a sort of rupture with the rest of the city. The first objective of the project is to exploiting the potential of the area, re-connecting it with the city, through the draft of a linear square from the river bank to the city center, occupied by open “rooms representing the new social attractors. Taking advantage of the topography, we draft a series of terraces that lead from the zero level up to the top of the embankment, to form a sort of theater to host events during the summer or offer a path from which to enjoy a different perspective of the city.

The project area is located to the south of the city of Formia, in that part of the city that we call “limit, for several reasons. It is an administrative limit, because it is the last part of the coast that belongs to the Formia municipality; it is a perceptive limit among two different landscapes (the protected natural area and the Gianola neighborhood); it is aphysical limit among the city and the sea. The settlement is formed by single summer houses with garden, with low quality. The roject aims to enhance the natural environment, through the creation of a cycle path, a coastal park and re-design of the beach facilities (polycarbonatemodular elements with aluminum frame that will host an info point, events in the life of the park or not, and toilets).

The project aims to organize the state road into 3 parts, distinguishing the car transport from other modes of transport and creating a town center bounded by 2 doors, one existing (porch) and one new (new porch) in the Town Hall Square. The left side of the state road in the direction of Padua is designed as a linear park, a walk along the city center. The right side of the state road is occupied by sidewalks, bike paths, parking and small squares. Via Bafile is the best known and liveliest, as well as the longest street of the city beach of Jesolo; it is used by pedestrians as well as cars; despite the fact it is parallel to the coast, it lacks a seafront connection. The theme of nostalgia for the sea is therefore the main core of our proposal, that aims to critique the current chaotic condition of Via Bafile. The project aims to divide the longitudinal axis into parts, highlighting some strategic points, so as to divert attention from the repetitiveness of the building facades.

The belltower: must we see it as a sign of humanity that reaches out to the divine, or, in the opposite direction, since the Christian God became man? And then must it be subject to the same law of gravity of the human being who erects it, or must it be subject to other gravity, since it is also a symbol of spiritual nature? Building a tower has always been a manifestation of social and economic force and that, place the clock on the top of it, was synonymous of time control: today the rhythms of life are absolutely subjective and globalization of communications allows daily and night simultaneity to point that the historical meanings are deprived of their value at the same speed with which you consume a commercial product: the time now flows “alone.” It remains what we might call “performance-celebration” of the community that is expressed in the construction of a bell tower, perhaps it is like talking about advertising ....

The landscape is no more rural and not yet urban; the territorial identity is undergoing a crisis. In the city the lack of urban planning in the last decades has produced a rupture among the historical city center, organically located in the natural environment, and the new interventions, where the river, that gives its name to the city, has became invisible and it was dropped out of people’s sight. The project aims at the creation of a school campus, enclosed by a wall, that is intended as a permeable membrane, a strong territorial system capable of collecting and distributing school activities, cultural and sporting activities.

The recovery of the ex-gasometer is an opportunity for urban renewal and re-design of an entire district. The project needs a mix of public and private investments, as it happened in the successful experiences in Berlin, Paris and Barcelona in the 90’s. Consensus strategies will be developed through housebuildings, that will be necessary for public spaces maintainance. The land lots will be sell to private investors that can build their house according to personal aesthetic and functional needs, taking advantage of the infrastructures and facilities of the area. This approach leads to an image of a dynamic city able to satisfy dreams and needs of its inhabitants.
Due to the big size of the project area, we choose a strong and clear concept that could lead the design from urban to architectural scale. We individuated 5 layers: program, road system, linear park, buildings and topography. The first band, bounded by the banks of the channel La Masinata, was suggested to be transformed for rural uses; the second band, bounded by the pine forest of San Francesco, for touristic and recreational activities, considering the presence of the shores; the third band, extended from the beach to the Napoli road, for the enhancement of natural interest; the fourth and fifth bands, between Mercadante, Bellini and Maratona road, for high density housing; the sixth band, occupied by the fair and the stadium, for sport activities; for the seventh band, due to the presence of abandoned buildings, for education and research area; the last band, in the west part of the area, for museums and conference halls.

Cape Town
In the last 20 years, under the pressure of the global economy, some underdeveloped countries have seen a rapid economic growth and have become active players on the international stage. Access to new technologies and availability of resources have allowed them to compete with western countries, still rich but with a steadily declining birth rate. Thanks to low cost manpower and little restrictive regulations concerning labor and environmental protection, these countries are the spokesperson for a new form of economy. These new democratic countries must also take into account the investments in the poor neighborhoods and slums and consider the needs of social cohesion in the regional/urban planning. The South African Town Ships were not born due to the phenomena of illegal immigration, poverty or unemployment, as is the case of South American slums, but due to racial strategies very close to slavery.
KHAYELITSHA TOWNSHIP: A LABORATORY FOR URBAN PRAGMATISM. STRATEGIES OF DENSITY The intervention strategies can not be applied through a tabula rasa of the existing slums, as it would be economically unsustainable to remove all inhabitants. These segregation areas are located away from city centers, because during the apartheid the government’s policy did not tolerate the presence of nonwhite people in the center, except as labor force. This condition has totally marginalized the black populations, but it has also forced the government to improve the pheriphery, providing it with infrastructures. These areas are well served both by public transport system (rail) and road system. Satellite towns The size of the population in the Townships requires an autonomous development of infrastructures, economy and production. Local governments will provide basic infrastructure and housing, and promote and co-finance medium and small companies, attracting investors.
Layer 1 - Invariant elements The existing resources are fenced to be safeguarded and, therefore, absorbed and conformed to the guidelines.
Layer 2 - Infrastructure and connections The road system will create the axes to cross the area, and new access points; the public transport system will be reinforced through a modernization of the metropolitan rail surface. The new roads will have to assume the dignity of Boulevards, provided with trees, bike paths, rest areas and recreational spaces; in the long term they will also become the economic engine for the sustenance and development of local economy. accesso accesso
accesso
accessi al mare
accessi al mare
Layer 3 - Strips-urban fabric The strips and bands of the Rem Koolhaas’ project for the Parc de la Villette in Paris are re-conceptualized in order to divide the area and create a mixed use of the spaces (housing, green areas, common spaces, facilities as schools and hospitals).
Layer 3 Housing and densification Taking as reference some projects for the South American slums (in particular Alejandro Aravena’s projects), the buildings “legitimized by the government must take into account the expansions through auto-construction. This way, there is no more distinction among legal and illegal buildings, since the two become complementary and cooperate in the implementation of settlements. Densification The current distribution of the slums is compact and almost monolithic because it has been built on a single floor for obvious economic and structural reasons. There is then the need to change the current type of settlement moving towards multi-storey and built in line typologies with the aim to meet the housing needs and to free up part of the lots for recreational and collective use.
The project area is pheripherical and located in the west part of the city center; in the area there is a prevalence of abandoned port facilities, some recently built public housebuildings for low incomers and two hystorical buildings (oratorio dei Mendicoli with its church and belltower). Consequently in the area there are different social needs and uses. Moreover the Faculty of Architecture moved in this area, bringing new uses and needs. The project aims to be an intermodal point between hystorical city, port and lagoon, connecting physically and socially the different settlements. The new building aims to be a cultural center, a social condenser to bridge university and citizens, revitalizing the area.

A perceptive approach
The details shall express what the basic design idea demands in that given point of the object: union or disjunction, tension or lightness, friction, solidity, fragility. Peter Zumthor Through a look that Paul Klee would define “swarmingâ€? we tried to reverse to what precedes the form. With a kind of initial research we tried to reverse to the underlying design intentions. This research has been done starting from the reading of the mere perceptive, visual and tactile characters/quality of the surface of the stone; with limitation to the perspective investigation we voluntarily glossed over the other questions concerning the architectural project (technological, typological, functional‌). The quality on the visual and tactile effects produced by the surfaces of the stone is not the result of fortuitousness, it is rather the conclusion consciously reached by the wisely playing designer. The wise playing leads the relations between the elements and their characteristics. SHEETS and JOINTS are the final elements and not longer a reduction of the stone surfaces, whereas the characteristics of the materials relate to the SURFACE TREATHMENT and the polychromy of the elements. The composition of the two prime elements sheet and joint is constituted by the parts that maintain one another the different relations. There are infinite variations on the composition of such elements and parts. Staggering the joints, the laying surface, the dimension and the polychromy of the sheets or the cutting system, varying the equilibrium or calibrating innovative and traditional designs you will obtain different surfaces, which different perceptions arise from.
In order to have a stone surface expressing the intension, the designer shall be capable of leading all those variables playing wisely in the design phase. But only through another phase – the testing of the material samples – the patient experimental action made by the designer tames the stone allowing the material to tally giving the form to the design initial idea. As part of a sensorial perspective approach the theme of the stone surface is not apart from the question of optical illusion. With reference to the lightness of a stone parameter, clearly only through defined tools for composition and technique you can gather the illusory effects as lack of thickness and weight. Likewise illusory were considered those stone surfaces classically used in the ancient world (in certain cases until the end of the past century) which were painted for iconic, representative and symbolic motives. With the attempt to give fundament to fascination provoked by the stone surfaces on us, 80 project declining the theme of the stones have been properly selected. Those project, diverse per solution and intention, have been then collected, described and presented within the 8 declination of the theme. With the intention of creating a perceptive dictionary, giving reason to that fascination exercised by the stone surfaces on us, 8 declinations of the stone themes have been developed, for which 80 project have been selected – projects that in a different way could decline the theme; projects heterogeneous per solution and intention. Without claiming to fully describe such vast subject, the declinations represent only one of the multiple levels of comprehension; with their concatenation they can however formulate a sufficiently articulated argument on the project.
