One trend that I have noticed popping up over the

past couple weeks and months is F I S H N E T S Present in the 90’s and 2000s’ fishnets were often worn in leui of normal tights or stockings. But today, while they are still worn in that aspect, they’re often worn under clothing. Whether that be under ripped jeans, or under an oversized sweatshirt as a dress, we’ve definitely seen a resurgence in fishnets. I’ve personally seen the trend pop up all over Instagram. The two girls on the left are actually people who I follow on Instagram, some of the first people I saw participating in the trend. Katie- @stealthespotlight (top) Kallie- @kalliekaiser (bottom)

As well, both of them make fashion and beauty related Youtube videos and have been talking about fishnets as of recent.

While fishnets have been huge on Instagram and Youtube, the trend has to be sold somewhere, so that the masses may partake in it. While you can obviously go to Target or Forever 21 and get a pair for around $5, one big pioneer in the consumption of fishnets is Urban Outfitters. Seen on the left are two of the many fishnet items that Urban sells. Rather than just selling fishnet tights, Urban sells fishnet biker shorts, fishnet socks, even fishnet catsuits. Urban is obviously a place where lots of teens want to shop, so therefore they have a lot of control in current trends. If Urban is selling something, it most likely already is a trend or is quickly on its way to becoming a huge trend.

I personally have not partaken in this trend of fishnets, personally becuase i find tights in general very uncomfortable. But, I know plently of people who have started adopting the trend of fishnets under ripped jeans. When I asked my friend Emily about the trend, she told me that she got the idea from Danielle Berstein of the blog ‘We Wore What’. Emily said, ‘I follow Danielle on Instagram and other bloggers kinda like her, I saw one day that they had all started wearing fishnet tights and I thought it was an easy way to up my style game. So a few days later I went to Forever 21 and got a pair. I wear them probably once a week, honestly.’

While I personally have taken part in this trend, I know it’s going to stick around for a while. I started seeing it pop up a few months ago, and it seems to still be going strong. I’ve seen bloggers like Danielle Berstein of We Wore What sporting this trend, Arielle Charnas of Something Navy has sported it a few times as well. Judging from the fact that this trend has made it all the way from people like them, to being on the floors of Forever 21 and H&M, I think its safe to say its stuck.

I think one thing thats really interesting about this trend is that its not just strictly one item of clothing, or something that’s worn only in one season. You can wear this many different ways, as I’ve said before. As well, this trend has stuck around for a few months and through a few seasons, so it’s pretty versatile, and I think thats not often something we see in passing trends.

Trending: Overalls

A trend that has been slowly popping up over the past few months has been

OVERALLS.

Overalls have been one of the trends that I’ve been a huge fan of, owning a few pairs of overalls myself. I think what makes them so enticing to people is that they’re so comfortable and so easy to wear. Sort of like an elevated romper, as you can style them more personally than you would be able to with rompers. You just throw them on with a plain tee and you’re out the door. I personally find overalls best for days where I can’t really be bothered to pick out an outfit, but I still want to feel put together.

One thing that’s great about overalls is that they come in so many colors and styles, making it really easy for anyone to find a pair that they like. You can almost get any color or pattern undert the sun. You can get regular overalls, shorts, overall dresses. Fitted, loose, distressed or not, the list is really endless. They’re great for casual days but I’ve seen plenty of instances where people dress them up a bit more and wear them going out. It just really shows you how versatile they are.

I’ve seen overalls in many instances, sold on many different websites and in stores. One of the main stores partaking in this trend I have found to be Urban Outfitters. When looking on Urban’s website, I found probably ten to fifteen different overall items for women (whether that be shorts, pants or dresses), as well as a few styles for men. Both pairs shown on this page were found on the Urban Outfitters website. Along with Urban, Free People also sells many pairs of overalls (I own a pair myself).

One thing I’ve found interesting about this trend is they’ve been subjected to the ‘trickle up’ theory. I started spotting overalls on streetwear blogs and in Savannah, often people saying they had thrifted them. After that, stores started to sell them, and that’s when I started to spot celebrities wearing them. So rather than the celebrities or influencers starting the trends, they were the ones trying to keep up with it. Danielle Berstein of We Wore What has said many times before that shes been wearing overalls for years and that overalls are like her ‘second skin’. About a year ago, when this trend was really just an inkling, Danielle founded Second Skin Overalls. Second Skin Overalls are priced around $200, which is pretty affordable. Since she is very popular on Instagram, she obviously marketed these and they sold out almost instantly. I kinda see that to be the moment when this trend really took off.

Like I said before, overalls can come in really any pattern or color, and here are a few examples. The top pair is corderuoy and the bottom pair is a cotton polka dotted pair. We’re coming out of the age where overalls have to strictly be denim, and strictly worn by children under the age of ten. It’s definitely a trend that I see to have lasting power, and I’ll probably continue to wear them even after they’re a trend.

Trending: Ruffles

This spring, ruffles have been popping up on everything. I first started to notice this trend on my friends, rather than on blogs or Instagram. I’ve noticed it mostly in peoples ‘going out clothes’. Especially here at SCAD, where going out and going downtown is such an integral part of peoples social lives, as is being on trend. For class, people dress pretty casually, but experiment more when they’re going out.

But after I started noticing this trend in Savannah, I started noticing it everywhere. When online shopping, in blogs, on Instragam, in store, literally everywhere. Online shopping, which is something I do almost every day, is where I saw it first. Both images on this page are from Nasty Gal, who is known for being on trend.

One blogger that I often look to for fashion inspiration and ideas is Arielle Charnas of Something Navy. She’s known for having a very simple yet girly style. I’ve noticed her wearing lots of ruffles over the past couple of months. She recently had a child so shes been wearing lots of looser fitting tops to try and hide her bump, and I think that ruffles work perfectly for that. Another thing, is that you can have a very simple outfit going, but the added definition of ruffles makes you look so much more put together. Rather than having a simple shirt, ruffles make it look like you put so much more effort than you actually did.

Another thing that makes ruffles so appealing is that they can be dressed up or down. Like I said, you can pair a ruffled shirt with a plain pair of jeans and it automatically makes you look more put together. As well, ruffles have been seen recently on evening gowns or cocktail dresses. On the left, is Aimee Song of Song of Style. Shes wearing a Dior ruffled dress, which typically would be worn in a fancier environment, but she toned it down with some booties and a backpack to wear to Coachella.

Like I said before, I’ve noticed ruffles across many different websites. On the left is a dress I found on Need Supply Company. Need is known for having very simple clothing, so I think it’s interesting to see a company such as them partaking in this trend.

I personally enjoy this trend because I think it can be as simple or as crazy as you want it to be.You can have a dress with just one ruffle across the top, or circa Viktor and Rolf, your entire garment could be covered in tiny little ruffles. It can be played up or down. It can be used with almost any material or pattern, which makes it so versatile. I think its definitely a trend thats going to stick around.

PATCHES

One of my favorite trends that is starting to pop up more and more is

PAT C H E S

Patches have been popping up m o r e a n d m o r e a s o f r e c e n t l y, adding customization to any article of clothing. Going in the same kind of category with patches is pins. A lot of people that tend to have customized their clothes with the addition of patches have also added pins, so I kindof consider them one idea.

Again, the main thing about the trend of patches & pins is the ability to customize. That’s somewhat how this trend came to be. People wanted to be able to show their personality through their clothes moreso than they were then able to. But now because stores have picked up on this trend, there are so many articles of clothing that already have patches on them, which somewhat defeats the purpose. For example, Urban Outfitters has plenty of clothes with patches already on them (like this pair of jeans on the left). But also on Urbans website, they have a category under accessories with pins and patches, giving you the option of customizing them yourself.

Most of the time when I think of applying patches or pins to clothing, I think mostly of jean jackets or canvas backpacks (like the one on the right). But what I found when doing a quick search on Forever 21’s website is that patches can be on almost anything, which I guess makes sense. For example, Forever 21 sells this bodysuit on the left with patches already applied, along with many other articles of clothing.

To even further the point that patches can be applied to anything, all three pairs of these shoes that have been customized with patches are currently available on Poshmark. This really shows that you can customize anything with a patch, which is what I think makes it so appealing to people.

Even designers are getting in on this trend! Granted, these patches are already applied, making it impossible to take them off, and the Louis Vuitton bag is actually painted to look like patches. But I’d say that this trend had been subjected to the trickle up theory. It started as a way for people to show their personality, and so many mass retailers have tried to cash in on it. But having these patches already applied defeats the purpose in my opinion.

off the shoulder

The trend of

OFF THE SHOULDER

has been perfect for spring. It’s easy, it’s comfortable, and can be as casual or as dressy as you want it to be. I feel like this trend really popped up overnight. I noticed it a couple of months ago, all of the sudden everyone was wearing it. The two examples I have shown here are girls I follow on instagram, Olivia Jade and Margot Lee. They both have Youtube channels relating to fashion, so I can often look to them for what is going to be a trend.

This trend can also be spotted on celebrities and models alike. On the left is Kate Bosworth wearing an off the shoulder jumpsuit, and on the right is Chiara Ferragni in and off the shoulder dress. I think its interesting that so many people love this trend, and I understand why. I asked a few guys their opinion of this trend, and they said its ‘sexy, but also kind of cute’, ‘like you look good but it doesn’t really look like you tried’. And I think both of these statements are so true. We wear it because it makes us feel sexy but not overly so, and its such a simple way to do so rather than a skintight dress or what have you.

This trend has been carried through almost every capacity of the fashion realm. Theres plenty of off the shoulder items sold at Forever 21, like this dress on the right. Zara also sells many off the shoulder items, like this green top on the bottom. There’s high end versions and low end versions, making it accessible to everyone.

This trend can even be seen on the runway. On the left is a dress from the Chanel Spring/Summer 2017 show. A beautiful off the shoulder dress with a sort of cut out in the middle of the neckline. This just shows that even Karl Lagerfeld is paying attention to the trends and trying to capitalize on them.

Lastly, is two peices from The Brock Collection’s Spring/ Summer 2017 collection. The Brock collection is not as expensive or well known as Chanel, but is still keeping up with the trends. I found these two items interesting because they combined two trends that I’ve talked about, off the shoulder and ruffles.

GINGHAM

this spring, I’ve been noticing gingham pop up on almost any surface you can think of. Whether that be pants, dresses, skirts, shoes, purses or even sunglasses. It’s EVERYWHERE! I vividly remember wearing little gingham dresses and skirts when I was a toddler, so it’s interesting to see this trend come back into play. I think thats a lot of the appeal of it is that it makes people feel like a little kid again, but not in a super over the top way. Like Olivia Palermo, she’s wearing a pair of gingham pants but the rest of her outfit is super simplistic. It adds a nice print to any outfit without being overdone.

While I JUST mentioned that gingham is something that can be very understated, It can also be over the top if you want it to. Like both of the images pictured here, you can wear gingham head to toe. The top image is from pinterest and the bottom image is a picture from an article in Man Repeller. Wearing gingham head to toe is a super fun way to stand out. You can wear all one color and size of gingham or mix and match, making it super playful and fun.

Tons of places are starting to sell gingham as well. Whether that be in a super simplistic shift dress from Reformation to a top from Urban Outfitters or even these dramatic pieces pictured here from Zara. Theres definitely a way for anyone to incorporate this trend into their wardrobe in a way that suits them best.

The trend has also been super popular on Instagram, and I’ve seen in pictured in tons of bloggers pictures. Above is Danielle Berstein of weworewhat. I noticed that on a recent trip she went on she kept wearing this gingham bikini, which again shows the versalitily of the trend. Bloggers obviously have a ton of influence over whats trendy and I would definitely have to credit Danielle partially for the rise of gingham.

Lastly, one of the main places I look for what is going to become a trend or just whats going to be ‘cool’ in general is Man Repeller. Recently, I saw the right picture on Leandra Medine’s instagram and thought that these were the coolest pants ever, went onto the website to try and figure out where they were from. While I didn’t find that out, I found tons of articles that had gingham pieces in them, like the one from earlier. But as well, they have a weekly article called “Should I Buy This?”, essentially asking readers if they like the clothing pictured and this gingham top on the left was one of the options showed. Again, I think its interesting that this trend can be worn so many different ways, like this top with yellow bikini bottoms.

CAMO

A trend that I’m starting to notice everywhere is camoflouge. Which I think its interesting because I distinctly remember people talking maybe a year ago about how ugly camo was, a full 180 from today. One person that I would credit with starting this trend is Jenna Lyons, pictured on the left with her son, both wearing camo pants. Jenna’s style has always had somewhat of a utilitarian edge so camoflouge pants only make perfect sense for her to wear. And obviously people love anything that she wears, so hence the start of the camo trend.

And when I say I’ve seen this trend everywhere, I’m really not joking. It’s all over pinterest (the picture on the right), people stying camo jackets in cool and hip ways, rather than your classic army pants. As well, Leandra Medine wrote an entire article on Man Repeller called ‘I think I need a camo jacket’ where she chronicled her finding of the J Crew jacket pictured on the left, her not buying it, realizing she wanted it, and consequently wearing it with almost every outfit for a month.

Instagram ‘influencers’ have also been huge in the startup of this trend. On the top left is Maddi Bragg, who I’ve noticed wearing these camo pants at least once a week. Either wearing them with a plain white shirt or a black mesh top for going out. So as you can see, its a very versatile trend. On the bottom is Kallie Kaiser, who’s always super on top of trends. She posted this picture of her a few months ago on instagram wearing camo, and after that I started noticing it everywhere.

Recently, Urban Outfitters did a collaboration with Vans. A lot of peices (like the one on the right) featured camo. This collaboration blew up instantly and I’ve seen this exact shirt on so many different people in Savannah, so its safe to say that it’s pretty trendy. As well, Forever 21 has been selling tons of camo. When I searched their website, there were like 4 or 5 pages of results for camo, one being this camo skirt on the left.

I think a lot of this also stemmed from women wearing more tom-boy like clothes as of recent, so its interesting to see the take on the mens side of the camo world. Both of these clothing items are currently on sale at Urban Outfitters. Whats cool about this trend is that both men and women can be seen sporting this trend. Guys don’t get many patterns besides stripes so I’ve been seeing a lot of boys get really into this trend. This shows how versatile it really is and I think because of that, it’s going to stick around for quite a while.

Frayed Hems

When I was looking for inspiration for these journals, I asked my sister what some of her favorite trends are. She immediately responded with ‘jeans with frayed hems!!’. I’d never really thought of this as a trend for some reason, but shes definitely right. Once she pointed it out to me, I realized that almost everyone I know owns a pair of jeans with frayed hems. Whether they bought them that way, or customized them themselves, It’s a big thing right now.

One thing thats really cool about this trend is that theres so many different variations of it. On the top left is Lauren Elizabeth, a youtuber and ‘influencer’ I follow on Instagram. Shes sporting the frayed hems that look kind of like the hem has been ripped out of the jeans, unfolded, and then ironed down. I don’t know the correct term for this, but I’ve personally done this to a few pairs of jeans that fit me but have become too short, its a great way to extend the life of your pants while being trendy at the same time! On the right is Arielle Charnas of SomethingNavy, who I’ve talked about a few times. Shes sporting the simple cut off jeans with natural fraying, which is another big part of this trend.

A few other ways of wearing this trend are the over the top version. Like Amanda Steele (pictured on the left), you can get a cropped, flared, frayed pair of jeans, combining three different trends at one time. Or like Allegra Shaw on the left, you can take an old pair of mom jeans, cut and fray the bottom, and you have a new pair of jeans! I don’t know if she bought the jeans that way or did them herself, but I’ve known people to do both.

A few more examples of ways you can rock the frayed denim trend, are with patches (like the pair from Urban Outfitters on the right), or a slight fray like the pair I found on Pinterest pictured on the left. Something so simple, but theres so many different things you can do with it. And I think thats what makes it so enticing to so many people, theres a way to put your own spin on it.

Both pairs pictured on this page are currently being sold at Free People. While they look quite similar, the right pair has a ton more rips both on the knees and on the back pockets. And the bottom pair, if you look closely enough, has embroidery below the knee and right above the fray on the back of the pants which says ‘flower child’. So as you can see, theres many ways to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe, and make it your own. It’s a super casual trend as well and makes your plain pair of jeans just a little bit more interesting.

HOT PINK

Recently, I read an article on Man Repeller called ‘Is Fran Drescher pink the new Millenial Pink?’. (Fran on the far left, a picture from said article on the right of that). After seeing this article, I thought long and hard about it, and it just might be true! After this article, I realized how often I had started to see hot pink. It make sense to go from light pink to hot pink, especially for summer. And since hot pink was a huge trend around the 90’s, it only makes sense for it to circle back.

I think this trend is really cool because it can be worn in SO many different ways. Although, I feel like I’ve said that for so many of these trends, I really mean it for this one. You can wear a statement earring like these Delpozo ones pictured on the left, a pair of hot pink Gucci high top sneakers with a simple outfit, A hot pink jacket over a bathingsuit in the middle of New York City like Leandra did, or even just a plain hot pink shirt or dress, the possibilities are ENDLESS!!

Both of the images are from Spring/Summer 2017 shows, showing all pink outfits. It’s cool to see the way this trend has gone all the way from the runway to fast fashion retailers. While watching a Youtube video about upcoming trends, the woman talked about hot pink. How you can wear an entirely pink outfit (like the right image), or combine it with red and yellow, which are also upcoming trend colors (like the image on the left). It’s definitely a bold move to wear and entirely pink outfit, but its a perfect statement for summer.

One of the first people that I really started to see wearing this trend was actually Harry Styles. He wore this hot pink suit for his concert on the today show, getting a good amount of flack for wearing pink. But like we saw with millenial pink, its not just a color for girls, its definitely something that can be incorporated for boys as well. While they don’t have to go all out like Harry, they can wear a simple hot pink bathing suit like the one pictured here.

One place that this trend has become huge is Urban Outfitters. Whether it be a hot pink jean jacket, or an old school style one piece bathing suit, theres a ton of options on their website. They’re always on top of trends. And while there aren’t tons of hot pink pieces on their website right now, we’re only starting to see the beginning of this trend, so I expect they’ll have plenty more pieces soon.

BOLD STRIPES

While it may seem like it’s kind of always a trend, stripes have been huge recently. Both literarally and figuratively. By this, I mean the stripes themselves have been larger than recently and people are starting to wear them more and more. But this isn’t your average black and white medium thickness stripes. We’re talking multiple colors combined with different thicknesses, wearing more than one type of stripe at one time, really anything under the sun.

Like I was saying, there’s many different ways of wearing this trend. Whether it be tons of different colors all at different thicknesses like the image on the left, or small stripes in just one or two colors like the image on the right. This trend has gone from the runway in the past few seasons and now we’re starting to see it emerge more in streetwear and fast fashion.

On the left is Gigi Hadid, providing a prime example of how to mix different stripes without looking insane. Wearing pants reminiscent of Beetlejuice with a horizontally striped top. But on the other hand, you don’t HAVE to wear all stripes when wearing this trend. You can go the more simplistic road like Danielle Berstein by wearing striped pants with a plain top. If you’re afraid of wearing all stripes at one time and looking like a crazy person, this may be a better option for you.

There’s also many different variations of stripes currently for sale. For example, this Reformation dress on the left has been popping up all over my Instagram feed and is a more simplistic take on the trend of all stripes. Or, you can go the more insane route and wear these rainbow striped overalls from Urban Outfitters, there’s really something for everybody, or any different mood.

I think its interesting that were used to seeing stripes of just one width, like the Reformation dress on the previous page. But, we’re starting to see that you can combine different thicknesses in one pattern to create more dimension. Like this shirt on the bottom (from Urban Outfitters) theres thick and thin stripes together, with tons of different colors all at once. It’s definitely an item that will make you stand out. But for the days where you arent looking to stand out but still want to be on trend, the Superga-style shoes on the top are the perfect way to do so. They’re bold and combine different thicknesses and colors so they’re definitely on trend, but they’re way more toned-down than the shirt or the overalls. They can make a rather boring outfit interesting, without looking like your trying too hard, just like this trend in general.
