BECOMING A GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY PIONEER WHILE MONITORING SUSTAINABILITY ENFORCEMENT In light of these developments, businesses everywhere must implement sustainable practices across the board, from energy-efficient technologies to waste reduction strategies, to adapt to the new ways of conducting business. By Olivia Manzagol

T
he journey toward sustainability begins with a vision. Envisioning your business as a force for positive change, committing to minimizing environmental impact, and fostering social responsibility are increasingly crucial as governments implement more sustainability regulations. Globally, stringent sustainability protocols are being introduced for business reporting. In addition to initiatives in the US and EU urging business management to act more responsibly regarding sustainability, to report transparently and provide comparable disclosures on environmental, social, and governance issues that may influence investor decisions, and to ensure uniformity in practice and reporting reliability, Türkiye has also established the Sustainability Standards Department. This department became operational in March 2023. The Turkish Sustainability Standards Department has decided to align with the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), formed by the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Foundation Trustees following the 26th United Nations Climate Change conference in Glasgow in
2021. Extensive consultation with finance leaders worldwide, along with organizations like the Climate Disclosures Standards Board, the Taskforce for Climate-Related Financial Disclosures, the Global Reporting Initiative, and other stakeholders, has been conducted. Consequently, Turkish businesses will be subject to IFRS sustainability standards and reporting rules starting in January 2024. In light of these developments, businesses everywhere, regardless of their origin, must implement sustainable practices across the board. These practices range from energy-efficient technologies to waste reduction strategies, necessary for adapting to the new ways of conducting business. Businesses would also benefit from consulting legal, financial, and environmental experts to ensure compliance with current sustainability regulations and align their practices with national and international standards. ■ Olivia Manzagol is an economist, a finance specialist in energy, sustainability, and private equity, a university lecturer, a strategist, a mentor, and an author. 7 SMART WAYS TO MARKET YOUR SMALL BUSINESS ONLINE Content is king and customer feedback is the crown jewel–together, they build the empire of your online presence. By David N. Smith
I
n the digital era, small businesses have a vast array of opportunities for growth and customer engagement online. This guide outlines seven key strategies to effectively market your small business in the dynamic digital world, from leveraging social media to mastering content marketing. 20 TURKNETWORK | JAN 2024
01
Optimize Your Website for Search Engines A beautifully designed website is futile if potential customers cannot find it. Search engine optimization (SEO) is crucial. It involves using relevant keywords, creating quality content, and ensuring your website is mobile-friendly. Tools like Google Analytics can help you understand your audience and tailor your content accordingly.
02
Leverage the Power of Social Media Social media is not just for connecting with friends; it is a powerful marketing tool. Identify the platforms where your target audience is most active, be it Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or X (formerly Twitter). Regular posts, engaging content, and interactive campaigns can build a strong online presence. Remember, consistency is key.
BUSINESS
Harness the power of SEO and social media–your digital duo for unlocking online visibility and engagement.
03
Use Email Marketing Email marketing remains one of the most effective online marketing strategies. Build an email list by offering something valuable in return for customers' email addresses. Newsletters, exclusive deals, and personalized content can keep your audience engaged and encourage repeat business.
04
Engage with Content Marketing Content is king in the digital world. Blogs, articles, videos, and podcasts can provide value to your audience while subtly promoting your products or services. Quality content can establish your business as an authority in your field, fostering trust and loyalty among customers.
05
Invest in Online Advertising Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, such as Google Ads, can be a quick way to increase visibility. Social media platforms also offer advertising options tailored to your target demographic. While there is a cost, the right strategy can yield a significant return on investment. Encourage Online Reviews and Testimonials Positive reviews and testimonials can be powerful. Encourage satisfied customers to leave feedback on platforms like Google My Business or Yelp. Responding to reviews, both positive and negative, shows you value customer feedback and are committed to improving your service.
07
Collaborate and Use Affiliate Marketing Partnering with influencers or other businesses can broaden your reach. Affiliate marketing involves having others promote your products in exchange for a commission. It is a win-win: you get exposure, and they get rewarded for successful referrals.
06
Conclusion The internet is a vast and dynamic marketplace. For small businesses, it presents a unique opportunity to reach a wider audience and build a loyal customer base. By implementing these seven strategies, you
can effectively market your business online and pave the way for sustainable growth and success. Remember, the key to successful online marketing is consistency, engagement, and adaptation to the everevolving digital landscape. ■ JAN 2024 | TURKNETWORK 21

COMMUNITY STAR:
HÜRRİYET AYDIN OK Our award committee selects a "Community Star" for each issue who ardently helps others and actively promotes our Turkish culture. In this issue, we have chosen Hürriyet Ok. By Oya Bain
I
n this issue, we spotlight Hürriyet Ok, our distinguished Community Star. Hürriyet's journey from the bustling streets of Ankara, Türkiye, to the heart of American broadcasting is a tale of passion, perseverance, and cultural bridging. Join us as we delve into his inspiring story, exploring how his childhood experiences in Türkiye laid the foundation for his groundbreaking work with Turkish American Television (TATV). First and foremost, congratulations. You have been chosen as this issue’s Community Star. Thank you! It is an honor. Can you tell us a bit about your childhood? I grew up in Ankara, Türkiye. I was an active Youth Center Yenimahalle neighborhood member in high school, participating in Boy Scouts, photography, and radio clubs. They represented my interest in diverse subjects: Boy Scouts' experience continues to shape my life today. It taught me the importance of trust, teamwork, and leadership. I also enjoyed outdoor activities and appreciated nature and wildlife. Photography was my passion for capturing moments artistically. The photography club allowed me to manually develop films in the
22 TURKNETWORK | JAN 2024
dark room and project them on photo paper. It was magical to see the actual photo slowly appearing on the paper. Today, almost all photos are recorded digitally. In the Radio Club, we built radios using electronic components as a hobby. This may have sparked my later career in information and communications technology. How did your American adventure begin? I earned my BS and MS degrees in computer science from Hacettepe University in Ankara. I
came to Washington, DC, some thirty years ago to pursue a doctoral degree at George Washington University. From the start, I felt very comfortable with the lifestyle and vibe of Washington. It reminded me of my hometown Ankara in many ways, both being capital cities with universities, foreign students, and embassies. Additionally, there was a welcoming Turkish-American community thanks to organizations like the Association of Turkish-Americans of Washington, DC, (ATA-DC) and the Assembly of Turkish-American Associations (ATAA).
"In bridging two worlds, my story reflects the universal language of art, music, and shared human experiences."
THE BIRTH OF TURKISH AMERICAN TELEVISION You created an award-winning volunteerbased community TV in 2005. Can you tell us how this idea came about? In 2005, I cofounded Turkish American Television (TATV), a volunteer-based community TV. The idea came about when I started video recording the many vibrant Turkish dance and music performances in the DC area. I wanted to share these cultural events with a broader audience and counteract the stereotypes about Türkiye and Turks prevalent in the US media. In 2004, I took TV production courses with Sıtkı Bey (the publisher of this magazine) at Fairfax Public Access (FPA). With the help of a few more media-savvy Turkish American professionals, we created Turkish American Television (TATV)! In 2005, we produced and aired our first "Turkish-American Hour" on area cable TV channels, marking a new cultural chapter in the Washington, DC, area.
PUBLIC ACCESS TELEVISION: A MEDIUM FOR THE MASSES What is public access media? Public-access media is a TV and radio medium through which residents of large US counties can produce and broadcast their content. Individuals gain access to studio facilities for a nominal membership fee, stipulating that content remains noncommercial. This autonomy allows for a vast range of subjects to be covered, fostering true freedom of expression.
PROGRAMMING THAT CONNECTS CULTURES What type of TV programs are you producing for the community? Over the past 20 years, we have produced nearly 200 English and 100 Turkish programs, reaching an estimated two million cable subscribers across the greater Washington, DC, area. With online streaming, TATV viewership has expanded globally. Our programming caters to diverse interests: For Turkish-speaking viewers, our video content focuses on their experiences in the US, celebrating events like 23 Nisan and the Turkish Festival. For English-speaking viewers, TATV programs include documentaries about Turkish culture, concerts and music videos, JAN 2024 | TURKNETWORK 23
"TATV's success hinges on the dedication of its volunteer team, composed of individuals from varied professions and backgrounds."
segments promoting youth empowerment, and culinary showcases for savory and sweet dishes. We also include interviews with artists, community leaders, professionals, and scientists to enrich our understanding and connection to the Turkish community.
EMPOWERING YOUTH What other new initiatives does TATV have? TATV is also committed to youth empowerment.
We partner with Global Colab Network for their annual Teens Dream Video Contest. TÜRKIYE’S SMART ECONOMICS:
ARYA WOMEN’S INVESTMENT PLATFORM
Empowering women in business is not just about fairness, it is smart economics, unlocking potential and driving progress across our societies. By Sibel Kulaksiz

s the co-president of Arya International Club—Türkiye’s platform for women's empowerment—I recently had the chance to discuss investment opportunities for women entrepreneurs with club leaders in Istanbul. It was enlightening to meet with some of Türkiye's most accomplished women leaders, aiming to assist other female entrepreneurs, including young graduates. This woman-to-woman support is crucial for increasing the number of female business owners and CEOs in the country. senior positions decreases as the level of seniority increases. Globally, only 21 percent of C-suite executives and 38 percent of managers are women. In the Middle East, only 1.6 percent of CEOs are female, compared to 4.1 percent in Asia and 7 percent in Africa. Board seats are often filled through networking at the highest levels of the corporate sector, which is male-dominated and sometimes supported by religious or social norms. These biases exclude well-qualified women from executivelevel and board positions, reinforcing the status quo at the expense of better results and decision-making. To tackle these challenges, Arya members collaborate with various stakeholders. Since 2013, the Arya Women’s Investment Platform in Türkiye has supported women entrepreneurs. Founders Ahu Serter and Münteha Adalı are the driving forces behind this impressive network. To date, more than 1,200 entrepreneurs have been supported through various means, including facilitating access to finance and markets. Arya's goal is to strengthen women's participation in the economy and ensure their representation in decision-making positions. Prominent business leaders and entities, including Türkiye’s largest bank, Türkiye İş Bankası—established by the nation's founder, Atatürk—support the Arya Women. The members, active in all economic sectors, assist other women in achieving their goals. Recently, they mobilized significant resources following the earthquake, focusing on the most vulnerable people. We aspire to help women become leaders in economics, finance, and politics. Currently, Arya has 413 members in several countries and is open to collaboration with like-minded men and women. This dynamic group, from diverse backgrounds and industries, unites around a shared vision and ideals. Arya supports investment, training, events, mentoring, and consultancy programs. It aims to empower more women by growing their companies and educating them about smart money
investing. Arya Investor Academy is helping women become angel investors, organizing their investment processes, and offering investment opportunities. Arya provides a sustainable model for women's entrepreneurship by helping women become investors, learn from each other, and create opportunities for other women. To empower women and increase their role in decision-making mechanisms, public and private sector leaders need to take clear steps to achieve gender parity in social and professional
settings. A concerted effort is required to take robust actions that will reverse gender inequalities. ■ Sibel Kulaksiz is a senior economist with the World Bank Group South Asia Region, based in Washington, DC. Sena, who spent her career at the International Monetary with a brief stint with the Office of the Governor of the Central Bank of Türkiye, made a mark not only in the field of economics, but also as a talented photographer and a wonderful human-being. She was caring, vibrant, and conscientious as her friends and family describe her, and a staunch advocate of Turkish culture. When she passed away, George dreamt of making her legacy live with the empowerment of talented women from Türkiye, just like Sena. We are proud that George chose TPF to turn his dream into reality and established
a scholarship fund within our organization. The Sena Eken Schieber Economics Award came to life to provide opportunities for young Turkish women to obtain graduate degrees in economics in the US. Since 2016, 19 young women have had a chance to further their education in the best universities in the US from Duke to Columbia University. They truly are remarkable not just as scholars, but also as aspiring individuals and cultural ambassadors. Just as George had hoped, they promote the best as role models of intellectual curiosity and the cultures of both Türkiye and America. EMBRACING THE ESSENCE:
THE VITALITY OF PRESERVING THE TURKISH MOTHER TONGUE Incorporate Turkish into Your Daily Life. By Dilek Livaneli
I
n the bustling mosaic of global cultures, the resonance of our mother tongue holds an irreplaceable essence—a connective thread that binds us to our heritage, our roots, and our identity. For Turkish families traversing distant lands, nurturing the use of Turkish within their households stands as a cornerstone of heritage preservation, fostering not just linguistic prowess but an unwavering sense of belonging.
The Heartbeat of Culture
Language is more than a tool for communication; it encapsulates an intricate
tapestry of customs, traditions, and values passed down through generations. For Turkish families residing abroad, nurturing the use of their native tongue in daily conversations becomes a conduit for instilling cultural pride and a profound understanding of their ancestry. The nuances embedded within the Turkish language— its idioms, proverbs, and folklore—mirror the collective wisdom of a civilization and serve as a bridge to a rich heritage waiting to be embraced.
Fostering Stronger Family Bonds
The language spoken at home weaves the fabric of familial bonds. Encouraging the use of Turkish within the household
cultivates a deeper connection between parents and children, fostering an environment where shared stories, anecdotes, and emotions find their truest expression. Language becomes a vessel for the transmission of values, shaping a strong sense of identity and belonging for generations to come.
Navigating the Multicultural Landscape
In a globalized world, proficiency in multiple languages is an asset. However, the beauty of being multilingual should never overshadow the significance of preserving one's mother tongue. Proficiency in Turkish not only opens doors to cultural understanding but also serves as an anchor amidst the swirling tides of cultural assimilation, providing a steadfast identity in the face of a diverse, ever-evolving world.
Practical Steps for Turkish Families

To uphold the vitality of the Turkish language, practical steps can be taken within the family dynamic. Engaging in regular conversations in Turkish, reading Turkish literature, watching Turkish films, and celebrating Turkish holidays and customs are instrumental in nurturing a strong linguistic and cultural foundation.

of belonging. For Turkish families living abroad, embracing and effectively using their mother tongue stands as a testament to preserving their rich cultural heritage and fostering a profound sense of identity amidst the vast tapestry of the world. Here are more concrete examples that Turkish families abroad could incorporate into their daily lives to reinforce the use of the Turkish language: 1. Create Language Zones at Home: Designate specific areas within the household where Turkish is the primary language spoken. For instance, the dining table can be a space for discussing daily events in Turkish, encouraging everyone to communicate in the language comfortably. 2. Storytelling Sessions: Schedule regular storytelling sessions where parents or grandparents share traditional Turkish folktales, fables, or personal anecdotes in Turkish. This not only improves language skills but also imparts cultural wisdom.
3. Cultural Movie Nights: Organize movie nights featuring Turkish films with subtitles, offering both entertainment and an opportunity for the family to immerse themselves in Turkish dialogue and storytelling. 4. Cooking and Cultural Traditions: Involve children in cooking traditional Turkish dishes, explaining the recipes and culinary customs in Turkish. This hands-on experience connects language with cultural practices, making it more engaging. 5. Pen Pals or Video Calls: Encourage children to connect with relatives in Türkiye through letters, emails, or video calls in Turkish. This not only enhances language skills but also strengthens family bonds and cultural ties. 6. Reading in Turkish: Maintain a library of Turkish books, magazines, or newspapers at home. Set aside time for family reading sessions, where each member can choose a text they enjoy and discuss it in Turkish.
7. Celebrate Turkish Holidays: Mark Turkish holidays on the family calendar and celebrate them together. Whether it is New Year's, Children's Day, or Republic Day, engage in related activities and discussions in Turkish. By integrating these practical examples into their daily routines, Turkish families living abroad can effectively immerse themselves in the Turkish language and culture, creating an environment where the mother tongue thrives and remains an integral part of their lives. ■ Dilek Livaneli has 20 years’ of experience and is a renowned educator and counselor. The Ottoman Empire's hesitant yet strategic diplomatic moves in the late 18th and 19th centuries laid the groundwork for Türkiye's modern-day relations with the US.

BLAK BEY: THE FIRST AMBASSADOR TO THE US By Mehmet Ali Munir
T
he Ottoman Empire's first permanent embassies were established in the late 18th century. There was an embassy of the Ottoman Empire in London starting in 1793. The Ottoman Empire began classifying missions as great embassies, as legations/first-class embassies, second-class embassies, and third-class embassies. Beginning in 1886, Washington, DC, was classified as a "second-class embassy." The Ottoman Empire’s representation in the US was not designated as an embassy until 1912. The history of the Turkish Embassy in the US is closely tied to diplomatic relations with the Ottoman Empire, the predecessor of modern Türkiye. The first official visit to the US, lasting for six months in 1850, was by Emin Bey, who toured shipyards. Ottoman officials, one being the future envoy to US, Edouard Blak Bey (1824-1895), who sensed the rise of the US, unsuccessfully advocated for installing a mission in the US during the early 1850s. At the time, he had an American wife and possibly considered a posting as a family interest. In 1866, Ottoman foreign minister Mehmed Emin Âli Pasha (1815-1871)— best known for being the architect of the Ottoman Reform Edict of 1856, his role in the Treaty of Paris (1856) that ended the Crimean War, and being credited with preventing an early break-up of the empire— declined to start a legation to the US, after reviewing a proposal by Ambassador to France Safvet Pasha. The Washington, DC, posting was not considered important to the Ottoman government, which is why some officials refused the posting and those who were promising
were turned away. Sinan Kuneralp, author of a book on Ottoman diplomatic and consular personnel in the US, wrote that there was no real rush on the Ottoman side and the Ottomans created their US mission "comparatively late." At the time, the US already had two Chargé d'Affaires followed by four resident ministers to the empire (1831-1857). The empire finally reciprocated in 1867 by sending its first permanent envoy to the US, creating the Ottoman Legation with the appointment of the first ambassador, Blak Bey, as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary. He submitted his credentials as Türkiye’s first ambassador to the US during President Andrew Johnson’s (18651869) term at the White House. Just before his appointment, the Ottoman Empire became the biggest bidder for the weapons stocks remaining in the hands of the US Army after the civil war. With General Grant coming into the presidency, new production weapons were also purchased, and the amount increased rapidly with the additional purchase of Martini-Henry, Peabody Martini, and Winchester rifles. Keeping an eye on this new military relationship was Blak Bey. He was well educated in Western ways. After the death of his father, the publisher of Moniteur Ottoman, the official French
language gazette of the Ottoman Empire, the Empire undertook his education at Collège Saint-Barbe in France in 1837, making him the first non-Muslim to get this scholarship. He married an American woman and joined the Ottoman Foreign Service as Edouard Blak Bey, with posts in Paris and Naples. In the mid-1850s, Blak, sensing the rise of the US and thinking about his family, asked the Ottoman government to establish a diplomatic post in the US. Finally, he arrived to serve between August 28, 1867, and August 4, 1873, accompanied by his second wife, a Levantine Catholic woman, as his American wife had died. While in the US, they had a son, Richard Edward Blak (1867) who in his later life was also a Turkish diplomat and married Josephine Kalman, an American, in 1911.1 The couple’s only son, having graduated from Harvard, became a colonel in the US Marines and later an American diplomat. When Blak Bey’s term as US envoy ended in 1873, he was replaced by Gregory Aristarchis Bey (1873-1883). Blake returned to Istanbul and became mayor of District 6 Pera Municipality (now Beyoğlu), where he established a system of public parks that possibly got inspiration from his time in Washington, DC. ■ PHOTO Edouard Blacque Bey, Romero Gaita, and Antoine Conte Chevalier were photographed by Mathew B. THE 7 CHRISTIANS WHO SLEPT 309 YEARS IN A TURKISH CAVE Holy Koran tells the story of 7 Christians, plus their dog. By Uğur Akıncı
O
ne of the most interesting archeological sites to visit in Türkiye is a location called “The Seven Sleepers”—known as “Eshab-ı Kehf” in Turkish since their story is told in the 18th chapter (surah) of the Holy Koran named “Kehf.” More than one Turkish city claim that the Seven Sleepers slept for 309 years in their town: Karaman, Kahramanmaraş, and Izmir. There are similar caves in Jordan, China (Uigur region), Azerbaijan, etc. as well. I visited the one in Izmir (very close to Ephesus) with mixed emotions. MIXED EMOTIONS First, there is that sense of time-lost-irretrievably in the background that I feel for all archeological remains. People were here once upon a time, and now they are gone, swept away with the broom of time, never to return again. We will also be gone in due time. So in a sense, I am perhaps looking at my own future as well. 34 TURKNETWORK | JAN 2024
That is the first emotion I get when I visit an ancient site. Secondly, there are all these details that add authenticity to this strange tale of seven people plus their dog sleeping in a cave for 309 years. “This is not just a fairy tale —no matter how crazy it sounds, this stuff probably did happen!” is the message that rings in my ears at a site such as The Seven Sleepers. THE CURIOUS TALE They were early Christians in the 2nd century AC and they were forced to renege their religion and adopt Paganism by the Roman Emperor Gaius Messius Quintus
■ A European manuscript illustration dating from Middle Ages depicting the Seven Sleepers. It probably portrays Emperor Decius’s men sealing off the entrance of their cave.
Traianus Decius (c. 201 AD— June 251 AD) who made a name for himself with his persecution of Christians. The seven were given a deadline to change religions but instead, they hid away in a cave rather than reject their Christian beliefs. And in his infinite mercy, as the story goes, the good Lord put them to sleep safely for over three centuries. THE NAMES They might be totally fictitious characters, but we do know the names of these Seven Sleepers: Malta, Malchus, Martinianus, Dionysius, Yohannes, Serapion, Konstantinus Other sources mention the names Maximilian, Iamblicus, Martinian, John, Dionysius, Exacustodianus, and Antoninus. In Islamic sources they are known as: Debernuş, Mesliha, Kafeştateyyuş, Sazınuş, Mekselina, Mermuş, Yemliha, and their dog Kitmir. HOW TO PLAY THE CREDIT GAME In personal finance, credit cards are key instruments for building a strong financial future, much like laying a solid foundation for a house where each decision impacts the long-term. First Progress Platinum Prestige Mastercard® Secured Credit Card: Accessible to many, this card has no minimum credit score requirement. While it does not upgrade to an unsecured card, it allows you to open a second card after six months of timely payments.
By Oguz Konar
I
n the realm of personal finance, credit cards are more than mere tools for accruing debt; they are instruments capable of building a strong financial future. Establishing a solid credit history is akin to laying a robust foundation for a house, where each decision carries long-term implications. Therefore, I want to begin by highlighting key strategies crucial for building robust credit.
01
Make Payments on Time: Although it may seem obvious, payment history accounts for 35% of your credit score, making timely payments essential. Credit Use: Excessive use of your credit limit can harm your score. Hence, it is vital to use only 25% or less of the available credit. Good Credit Mix: A variety of credit types, such as credit cards, auto loans, or student loans, is beneficial for your score. It demonstrates to banks and lenders that you can manage different kinds of debt. Regular Monitoring: Keeping track of your credit score and report is important for monitoring progress and correcting any errors. Patience and Consistency: Building a solid credit history is a gradual process. Consistent good credit habits over time lead to the best results.
02 03 04 05
Having covered these points, here are the top 5 credit cards I recommend for those starting their credit journey to build a strong credit foundation: Discover it® Secured Credit Card: An excellent starter card requiring a $200 security
Credit One Bank® Platinum Visa® for Rebuilding Credit: Designed for credit rebuilding, this unsecured card offers 1% cash back on eligible purchases. However, do consider its annual fee and variable APR. deposit, which sets your credit line. A useful strategy is to make small monthly purchases and pay them off by the due date, sometimes leaving a small balance. After 7 months, Discover reviews your account. If you meet their criteria, they may increase your credit limit and return your deposit, converting it into a traditional unsecured card. This method helped my nephew upgrade from a $200 to a $2,500 card. Capital One Platinum Secured Credit Card: Notable for its flexible security deposit options, you might qualify to pay only $49 for a $200 credit line. Capital One may offer an increased credit limit after six months without requiring an additional deposit. Applied Bank® Secured Visa® Gold Preferred® Credit Card: This card stands out with its low fixed APR of 9.99%, among the lowest for secured cards. It does not require a credit check for approval and reports to all three credit bureaus, making it a great choice for starting to build credit.
Incorporating these credit cards and strategies into your long-term financial plan lays a strong foundation for future financial endeavors. Building good credit opens doors to better financial opportunities, underscoring the importance of each step in this journey. Many view the credit score system as a game they dislike playing, but that is often because they do not understand the rules. Credit influences many life decisions, from employment to future housing, vehicles, or even businesses. Knowing how to navigate this system is crucial, turning potential challenges into victories. And that, in my opinion, is the best kind of game to play. ■ Oguz Konar has been featured in many publications such as Forbes, Inc., USA Today, and Entrepreneur Magazine for the work he has done in the lending industry. First, we need to choose a system to help us remember and track our goals. Some people prefer traditional methods like paper and pencil to track routines and tick off completed tasks in their agenda. Others, more tech-savvy, opt for digital planners with advanced features to monitor their schedules and behaviors.
Regardless of the method, experimenting with different planners or building our own is crucial to developing habits and routines. This tool acts like a life coach, showing your progress or challenges and helping you set yourself up for success. The Foundation of Physical Wellness: Establishing a Fitness Routine ● Selecting Joyful Activities: Choosing activities that bring joy is essential, whether it is traditional dances or a morning jog. Enjoyment is key to the sustainability of any fitness routine. ● Setting Achievable Goals: Start with small, manageable goals like a 15-minute walk each day, gradually increasing the challenge. The goal is to build consistency, not intensity, at the outset.
Embrace each new year as an opportunity to strengthen your journey toward a balanced and healthy life through mindful practices and self-awareness. ●
Tracking Progress: Monitoring progress using a fitness diary or app is motivating. Celebrating each step, no matter how small, is vital for maintaining momentum.

PSYCHOLOGY
Nutrition: A Holistic Approach to Eating ensures a balance of nutrients and flavors, respecting cultural traditions while exploring new tastes. Combining Turkish cuisine with American variety makes meal planning an adventure. Even if you can only meal prep for 3-4 days a week, it is a great start. ● The Joy of Cooking: Cooking at home connects you to your cultural roots and gives control over nutritional content. It can be therapeutic and satisfying. Even if you are not a keen chef, adding your own touch to a ready-made meal can be beneficial. Enjoy food preparation with all your senses. ● Mindful Eating Practices: Eating should be a fully present experience, engaging all senses. Avoid electronic devices or TV during meals to enhance the experience and aid in digestion and satisfaction. Mental Health: Cultivating Mindfulness and Stress Management ● Consistent Mindfulness Practice: Daily mindfulness, meditation, or prayer, even for just 10-15 minutes, can significantly reduce stress and improve mental health. Beginners can start with guided meditation and breath exercises available online. ● Get Nostalgic: Revisiting peaceful memories from your past, like a Turkish tea time or an imaginary walk in your old neighborhood, offers a unique approach to relaxation. ● Regular Mental Health Check-ins: Reflect on your mental state each week to adjust routines and strategies, or seek professional help if needed. Social Wellness: Building and Maintaining Connections ● Regular Communication with Loved Ones: Maintain contact with family and friends in the US or Türkiye, calling a relative or meeting a friend regularly.

in Community Activities: Engage in Turkish American community activities, even if it requires travel or reaching out to local colleges to connect with Turkish students.
Sleep Hygiene: Essential for Health and Wellness ● Establishing a Sleep Routine: Consistency in bedtime and waking times is important. Engage in calming pre-sleep routines and choose relaxing content if watching TV. ● Creating a Restful Environment: Ensure your bedroom is a quiet, dark, and comfortable sanctuary. Incorporating soothing music or scents can aid relaxation. Lifelong Learning and Personal Growth Setting Educational Goals: Whether it is learning a new skill, pursuing a hobby, or academic studies, set clear, achievable goals for this year. ● Consistency in Practice: Dedicate time each week to learning or practicing a new skill, focusing on regularity over session duration. ●
In Conclusion The most successful approach to wellness involves combining self-awareness with consistent physical and mental health habits, making them a natural part of your individual and social life. Building these routines takes time and patience, but the result is a fulfilling and balanced lifestyle. As we step into the new year, it is the perfect time to embrace these practices and embark on a journey of holistic health and wellness. ■ Dr Burcin Ogrenir, a Family and Parenting Coach and the Director of April Institute, specializes in child development, personal growth, family dynamics, and education. CELEBRATING WORLD TURKISH COFFEE DAY:
A CULTURAL HERITAGE AND DIVERSE FLAVORS
Turkish coffee’s long history is finally celebrated internationally. By Talip Murat Kolbaşı
C
omments on my previous article have led us to question why Turkish coffee is absent from world menus, despite its ancient history. In this article, we will explore how we can secure a spot for Turkish coffee on these menus and increase its global recognition. In my last article, I discussed how Turkish coffee could gain more prominence in menus and increase its recognition. Since then, a significant event took place on December 5, 2023, marking World Turkish Coffee Day. The Turkish Coffee Culture and Research Association, supported by sponsors such as Kütahya Porcelain, Arçelik, and Arzum, organized a memorable event at the historic Beta Yeni Han in Istanbul. Distinguished guests like Deputy President Cevdet Yılmaz and Istanbul Governor Davut Gül, along with our association members and coffee enthusiasts, joined in the celebration. A highlight of the day was the presence of esteemed historian İlber Ortaylı. His insights on coffee culture in our lands, shared in the historical ambiance of Beta Yeni Han, offered a unique perspective to attendees. Additionally, a workshop was conducted at Nişantaşı University, led by Dr Göknur Akçadağ in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Turkish UNESCO Committee. This workshop celebrated the 20th anniversary of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage recognition and the 10th anniversary of Turkish coffee's inclusion in this list,
discussing future possibilities for this cultural treasure. Turkish coffee is not just a beverage confined to a single cup. Its versatility extends to a “double” serving for lengthier conversations and a milk-infused version for a softer taste. Apart from the classic Turkish coffee, there are other variations worth exploring. For interested readers, I recommend Anadolu'nun Kayıp Kahveleri (The Lost Coffees of Anatolia) by Atilla Narin and Naim Koca. The book delves into various types of coffee, such as damla sakızlı (mastic-flavored), yandan carklı, Datça almond coffee, Tatar coffee, Yandırma coffee, Tarz-ı Hususi, Cilveli coffee, and Dibek coffee. I invite you, dear readers, to not only explore these coffee varieties but also to share your thoughts on how we can further diversify our coffee experiences with different flavors. Wishing you delightful conversations over hearty cups of coffee. ■ Learn more about Arzum Okka here. NIL YALTER WINS THE SIXTIETH VENICE BIENNALE’S GOLDEN LION AWARD Nil Yalter, a visionary in video art, earns the Venice Biennale's Golden Lion for her compelling narratives on migration and feminism. By Erol Güler
P
athbreaking Turkish video artist Nil Yalter has won the Sixtieth Venice Biennale’s Golden Lion award for lifetime achievement along with Brazilian multimedia artist Anna Maria Maiolino. Nil Yalter’s work will be celebrated at the 60th edition of the biennale, during the opening ceremony on April 20, 2024, where she will receive the honor at a ceremony. She will make her Biennale debut this year, by presenting her 1973 Topak Ev, an installation recalling a traditional Turkish nomadic tent, and a new version of her 1974 work Exile Is a Hard Job, which investigates experiences of migration. She was nominated for the Golden Lion award by Adriano Pedrosa, who is curating the 2024 Biennale’s main exhibition, Foreigners Everywhere. In a statement, Pedrosa called the choice of the artists, whose nominations were confirmed by the board of the Biennale, “particularly meaningful given the title and framework of my exhibition, focused as it is on artists who have traveled and migrated between North and South, Europe and beyond. In this sense,” he continued, “my choice rests upon two extraordinary, pioneering women artists who are also migrants and who embody in many ways the spirit of ‘Foreigners Everywhere.'"
1938 in Cairo, Egypt, where she lived until the age of four. Then she moved with her family to Türkiye where she later received her education from Robert College in Istanbul. She started painting at an early age and took dance and ballet classes. In 1956, she traveled to India on foot while practicing pantomime. She had her first exhibition of paintings inspired by this travel at the French Cultural Institute in Mumbai (Bombay) in 1957. Between 1963 and 1964 she worked as a stage and costume designer for theatre companies in Istanbul. In 1963, she participated at the 3rd Paris Biennale. She then moved to Paris in 1965, specifically focusing on migration and women. Her poster exhibition Şu Gurbetlik Zor Zaanat Zor, has been exhibited around the world. The title can be translated as Exile is hard job, and aims to raise awareness of the situation of people in exile. Nil Yalter moved to Paris in 1965 and took part in the French counterculture and

revolutionary movements, which prompted her to move away from abstract constructivist painting to start working with the medium of video and to use her own body. In the 1970s, she led the beginning of the French feminist art movement.
Topak Ev In 1973, Yalter created an installation inspired by the temporary dwelling structures of Turkic nomads titled Topak Ev, a nomad's tent as a study of private, public, and feminine spaces at Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Topak Ev marked the beginning of Yalter's use of sociological and ethnographic methods in her work. While the installation was based on research conducted around Niğde on nomadic tents, the exhibition also included panels gathering drawings, collages, photographs, and handwritten descriptions on the structure and dimensions of nomadic tents, materials used in their making and decorative elements. Ceren Özpınar, in the article she wrote for the book Transnational Perspectives on Feminism and Art, 1960-1985, describes the Topak Ev as follows: “In October 1973, a life-size, Asian-style round tent appeared at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris in France. When the display opened to the public, this authentic installation called Topak Ev (Nomad's Tent or Yurt; literally Round House), which was created by the Turkish visual artist Nil Yalter for her first solo show in the city, piqued the art world's curiosity. Originally an Istanbulite, Yalter modelled Topak Ev after the dwelling JAN 2024 | TURKNETWORK 43
houses of the long-forgotten nomadic communities of central Anatolia. In this chapter, I regard Yalter's nomadic tent as a site that connects the transnational “worlds” in which she has participated, a connection that cuts across multiple countries, political histories, and personal narratives. Addressing Topak Ev's perspective on Third-World women's difference, I investigate the work's many messages in the backdrop of mainstream feminist theories of the 1960s and 1970s. And finally, exploring specific elements of the tent, I consider the creation of Topak Ev as an act of resistance and remembrance that stands to confront far older translocal conflicts in the Anatolian geography.”
Nil Yalter’s More Recent Work Nil Yalter created a series of works combining her interest in gender issues and feminism with a focus on marginalized communities such as migrant workers in Europe and former prisoners. Temporary Dwellings, first exhibited in Grenoble, France, in 1977, investigates the living conditions and experiences of migrant workers as told by women. A video installation created in collaboration with Judy Blum and Nicole Croizet in 1974, La Roquette, Prison de Femmes, reconstructs the living conditions in the Roquette women's prison in Paris with a video and series of photographs and drawings based on former inmate Mimi's memories related to daily rites and objects describing the experience of a panoptical space. In the 1990s, with the advent of digital technologies, Nil Yalter developed her video practice by using 3D animation techniques and electronic sound editing. Multiplying the image and its surface by way of geometrical
44 TURKNETWORK | JAN 2024
shapes, this use of digital techniques operates interruptions within the image and opens up a space for intertextuality in her video works. Most emblematic of this process is Pixellismus (1996), which took the form of an interactive CD-ROM. The work is an investigation of the relationship between Byzantine mosaics and pixels, inspired by the writings of Malevitch on modernism.
Exile is a Hard Job The original title is Şu Gurbetlik Zor Zaanat Zor. It has been translated into English as Exile is hard Job, and aims to raise awareness of the situation of people in exile. However, in my opinion "gurbetlik" does not exactly mean "exile," but rather living in a place far away from your fellow people. This feeling of loneliness is very well demonstrated by the famous song “Gurbet” by Özdemir Erdoğan, a musician I admire very much. Exile Is a Hard Job presents the diversity of Nil Yalter’s work, from previously littleknown paintings to her groundbreaking early videos and multimedia installations in which she combines photography, video, drawings, and sculpture into collages. Exile Is a Hard Job originated at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany. Nil Yalter’s work emerged from current political situations such as daily life in a women’s prison and the living conditions of immigrant workers. She reflects on the lives of these individuals and makes marginalized groups visible. The show features her first video piece, a performance for the camera titled Headless Woman or The Belly Dance, as well as the video and photographic project Le Chevalier d’Eon described as the “first work on transgender identity from a Middle Eastern
context”—and the eleven-channel video installation Pyramis ou le Voyage d’Eudore, which represents her expanded media projects from the 1980s. The exhibition also include multiple large-scale collages and installations, such as Temporary Dwellings, a representation of immigrants living in Parisian suburbs that is told through assemblage and video testimony, and La Roquette, Prison for Women, a video and photographic portrait of an inmate at a women’s prison in Paris that focuses on the physical and spiritual isolation of female prisoners. Language plays an important role for her, along with cultural influences. She sensitively integrates the voices of the people depicted in her works. For her exhibition at the Museum Ludwig, the poster series Exile Is a Hard Job had been prepared in the dominant language of each neighborhood: German, Turkish, Arabic, Russian, or Polish. This is because the work she does is by and for migrants, whose existence is both obvious and absent. We as Turks are proud that a Turkish woman contemporary artist has achieved such a high international recognition. Nil Yalter's works are held in the permanent collections of the following prestigious organizations: Tate Modern (London, UK), İstanbul Modern (Istanbul, Türkiye), Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, France), Fonds national d'art contemporain (Paris, France), Ludwig Museum (Köln, Germany), Long Beach Museum (Long Beach, California), Aksanat (Istanbul, Türkiye), Koç Contemporary (Istanbul Türkiye), Reydan Weiss Collection (Türkiye), Deutsche Telekom Art Collection (Germany), Foto Colectania Foundation (Barcelona, Spain), Coleccion Olorvisual (Barcelona, Spain), and Sammlung Verbund (Vienna, Austria). ■ Erol Guler, PhD, is the co-owner of GT Consultants LLC in Virginia. TECHNOLOGY
NAVIGATING THE TECH ECOSYSTEM There are many crucial roles in the technology business landscape. By Guclu Ozenci
I
n the fast-paced world of technology, we often see headlines celebrating the astronomical valuations and funding rounds of successful tech companies. However, we rarely learn about the common pitfalls, failures, and complex workings of this dynamic industry. Let us focus here on the fundamentals of that ecosystem and explore how tech founders navigate their journey alongside the key players shaping the tech ecosystem.
The Tech Ecosystem Essentials At its core, the tech ecosystem comprises founders, angel investors, venture capitalists, higher education, incubators, accelerators and, to some extent, policy makers. Understanding the roles and interactions of many of these components is crucial for anyone venturing into the tech landscape. Incubators: Nurturing Ideas into Reality Incubators play a pivotal role in supporting idea-stage founders at the beginning of their journey. These organizations, some with industry-specific focuses, leverage expert resources to guide founders. Forwardthinking higher education institutions also contribute, fostering collaboration between professors, students, and the private sector. In-house incubators within innovation-centric enterprises, aim to incentivize new ideas and cultivate an innovative culture. Their primary objective is to assist founders in questioning and validating their ideas, offering guidance for the upcoming phases.
Accelerators: Taking Ideas to the Next Level Moving beyond the incubator phase, accelerators target early-stage startups with programs designed for pre-seed, seed, or growth stages. Each program offers a specific focus and curriculum tailored to the needs of the founders. While accelerators may charge a registration fee and request a percentage of equity, some programs also provide funding. There are some accelerators with shared resources such as software development and marketing. These are usually called “venture studios,” and as they invest more resources, they acquire more equity—somewhat like a cofounder for early-stage startups. Angel Investors and Venture Capitalists: Fueling Growth Angel investors and venture capitalists are indispensable players in the ecosystem. If a startup demonstrates growth potential, scalability, and a viable strategy, investors may acquire a percentage of the company. The purpose is to potentially sell that share at a higher price in the future. Venture capitalists, as fund managers, aim to grow invested money. Considering tech startups as highrisk assets, these funds are expected to have substantial returns. Policy Makers: Shaping the Ecosystem Policy makers contribute to the tech ecosystem by creating incentives such as grants, tax credits or brackets, and other benefits. Grants, particularly in the early stage, offer a much-preferred non-dilutive structure. All these incentives aim to transform ventures into valuable enterprises, attracting more capital, fostering community
impact, job creation, and knowledge exchange, and nurturing a competitive landscape that draws additional capital and talent.
The Tech Landscape in Our Region In the DMV—the DC, Maryland, Virginia region—numerous accelerators, incubators, and investors actively contribute to the tech ecosystem. State initiatives, such as TEDCO in Maryland and VIPC in Virginia, provide resources, connections, and funding to earlystage technology and life-sciences companies. These institutions, usually backed by the US Treasury, play a pivotal role in creating and cultivating an environment for tech growth. As the DC region continues to grow, various organizations are emerging to stimulate technological innovation. Together, these players form a collaborative network propelling the region toward becoming a hub for tech excellence. Reach out to me for any tech-specific questions, about the accelerator opportunities at the Founder Institute Accelerator, or about attending our monthly founder meetup events. ■ Guclu Ozenci, a renowned technology entrepreneur, boasts a career marked by blending business needs with tech innovations. KNOW YOUR SELF-WORTH
Gain the respect of others when you gain respect for yourself. By Melisa Gulsun Ozmen
D
o you consent to recieving less love, care, money, welfare, peace, and health than you believe you deserve from life? Do you convince yourself to accept the bread crumbs that life offers you by listening to a voice in your head whispering, ‘’What if I did not have even this much?’’ Furthermore, do you have a deep feeling of resentment and passive anger toward people who do not give you the values you think you deserve (love, respect, compassion, care, peace, connection, money)? If you answered ‘’Yes!’’ to these, then I highly reccommend you turn inward and check the level of your self-worth. Things you receive from the outside are totally related to the sense and perspective of self-worth you have. Nobody, even God, can offer you more than what you believe you deserve. If your sense of self-worth has not grown enough, you may be blind and deaf to people who are willing to give you more than you believe you deserve. You consent to your life standards, your social environment, your income, your job, and the low quality of your personal relationships. As long as you consent to these outer

conditions, they can begin to harness you and you become a slave to them. You may not even realize that you have become a slave to these conditions, which you have created yourself. The more you consent to dysfunctional and substandard conditions, the more those conditions will eventually become the value you give yourself and, therefore, will shape your life. The point here is not to live in greed and incessantly
demand more and more from life without a feeling of gratitude. The key is how much inner satisfaction you get from the things you receive from the outside and how much they fulfill your soul’s needs and desires. People who carry narcissistic traits in their personalities may have difficulty with internal satisfaction or with experiencing feelings of gratitude. They may feel an irreplacible hunger inside them, no matter how much value they recieve from the outside. There is no cure for this sickness. However, if you feel like you have unsatisfied internal emotional needs and a lack of fulfillment in your soul, and if you still repress your emotional needs and consent to receive less, then there is a lack of self-worth deep inside of you. The difference between narcissistic satisfaction and soul satisfaction can be measured by the difference between greed and tranquility you feel inside. Real gratitude is an appreciation that causes soul satisfaction as a result of something you get from the outside. While feelings of gratitude feed and grow soul satisfaction and hence self-worth, consenting to less than what you believe you deserve feeds and grows the inner void and hence diminishes self-worth. Feelings of self-worth develop until the

age of seven naturally with the love, respect, care, and compassion children are exposed to, how children are taught to communicate with their emotional and physical needs, and how they express themselves to the outer world. Children can develop self-worth by being seen, heard, appreciated, and allowed to naturally express their unique traits. However, most of us might not have had a chance to open our eyes to a functional family environment like this one. Development of self-worth in a child is also closely related to cultural taboos and norms in a society. The degree of self-worth uploaded to a child’s inner world might be lower within the societies in which communal values are promoted and valued more than individualistic values. In communal societies, a family may be under pressure from society and might put societal norms and cultural values ahead of the self-worth of the children. If the children are not allowed to be who they are naturally, their self-worth is reppressed and camnot develop sufficiently. In such societies and families, it is much more important and appreciated for children to be in compliance with the societal norms or the extended family traditions and rules. Because of this, these family types can easily
sacrifice the self-worth of a child in return for being accepted by society. Consenting to less than what is deserved might be perceived as a virtue in such societies and families. In addition to societal norms, a dysfucntional family type is also a blockage against the development of self-worth in a child. Such a family is one in which love, respect, compassion, acceptence, communication, appreciation, admiration, and support are not openly expressed or experienced. Dysfunctions in a family can be caused by incompatibility of spouses, problems in communicating and expressing feelings, disconnectedness from feelings and emotional needs, and deep psychological traumas in one or two of the parents, narcissistic and codependancy personality disorders of the parents, or the parents’ addictions whether to work, money, alcohol, or gambling. Unawareness of self-worth and having self-worth issues in adulthood is a natural and inescapable consequence of opening one’s eyes to world within a dysfunctional family system. The good news is, self-worth can be nurtured and developed in adulthood as well as in childhood, if the reasons and sources for the self unworthiness are discovered and then accepted. It might be hard for adults who have grown up in a dysfunctional family to recognize their wants and needs and connect them to the outer world in a healthy way. Such adults may feel childish when they express their wants and needs openly and they may even feel shame for doing this. To expect others to guess what you need without expressing it openly is also a sign of lack of self-worth. Sometimes, selfworth-deficient individuals may choose to use some toxic tools such as hitting, being cross, using the silent treatment, or showing jealous or passive aggressive behaviors to express their emotional needs and wants from others. Actually, what is childish is to not express needs and wants from others openly, but instead, to apply these toxic tools to get what is wanted and needed. This is a lot like a baby crying to get what he or she
needs because he or she is unable to talk. An adult who is aware of his or her self-worth is someone who knows how to connect with themselves and to share their needs and wants with others in a healthy way. If you do not expose your self-worth openly to other people, they will value your worth according to their own values and you will have to consent to the value they estimate for you. Their values will become your worth, which is exactly what lack of self-worth is. Self-worth should be estimated by the self, not by others! Terms like self-worth, self-esteem, selfconfidence, and self-love are all connected to each other, and the source of their absence may come generally from a society, a culture, or a dysfunctional family type in which these basic human values were not cultivated into the person during childhood. All of these can be developed in adulthood, although it will take some work, and if one trait is developed, the others will follow. Just because you were born into an environment in which your selfworth was not nurtured does not mean you have to be a slave to those environmental conditions. Outside conditions are shaped according to the self-worth you give yourself. Instead of submitting to outside conditions, connect to yourself and listen to your needs, wants, beggings, and silent screams. Evaluating your self-worth only by yourself is an opportunity to grow and mature. This opportunity is available at any occasion. There is always a better option somewhere out there. Revise your self-worth and do not just consent; make a choice! ■ Melisa Gulsun Ozmen is an economics graduate with two decades in Turkish business. ARE WE READY TO
LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND? The movie Leave the World Behind reveals how our addiction to technology leaves us defenseless. And how we lose our sense of address and direction. This may be the weapon with which the US will be shot when and if it is targeted next by its enemies... The movie and involvement of the Obamas provoked many discussions. By Serra Karacam

s someone who studied political science and worked in the media for more than two decades, I have always wondered whether media studies are a field. It is a fact that especially in Türkiye, where I was born, our colleagues who graduated from communication sciences regard those who joined the profession from other fields and especially those who came to the fore
as if they had taken their place. Maybe my thought is a defense mechanism against it. Clay, a professor in the Department of Literature and Media, is an important character in the movie Leave the World Behind, presented by former President Barack Obama and his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama. Clay is the wife of advertising executive Amanda, played by Julia Roberts. The fact that media and media studies are sometimes questioned in the film also attracted my attention in this respect.

While they were spending time in a detached house with a pool in Long Island that they rented for a weekend holiday, the owners (claiming ownership) surprisingly knocked on the door at midnight. Amanda (Julia Roberts) and Clay Sandford have a teenage son and a younger girl. The owner, George Scott, played by Mahirshala Ali, has a daughter named Ruth, who is 25 years old a straightforward character.
Does the media shape society or does society shape the media? Is it an escape from the society or a reflection of it? Everyone, from academics working in the field of media to members of the media, seems extremely satisfied with being a member of this field. However, with the emergence of citizen journalism and social media, the meaning of media work has been questioned more. Advertising channels have shifted to social, and on the other hand, it has led to the creation of a new power field as it allows the masses to have a greater voice in what they say and to shape the policy. While people did not have a say in power and government policies even though they voted, they began to have the power to set the agenda with social media. A new field has opened for those who understand this “new power.”

The Trust Decision and Social Reputation Meanwhile, Clay's wife, Amanda, is not very convinced that the owners of this luxury house, which they rent for $1,000 per night, are the black father and daughter... The exact sentence that brought to my mind the Ethos series, which should be read
through the secular-religious polarization in Türkiye, was Amanda's words: "Maybe he's the handyman and she's the housekeeper" keeps insinuating that this cannot be their house because they are black. The Ethos series was criticized for portraying the hijabed character Meryem, played by Öykü Karayel, as a cleaner, and the focus of the movie was overlooked. "I'm sorry, this really doesn't seem like their house," Amanda says, urging her husband to have a private talk about whether to let

In exchange, we hear the Black father and daughter talking at night and the girl says that if the world falls apart, trust should not be doled out easily to anyone, especially white people, balances out highlighting all people demonizing the other race… Apart from these domestic racist discussions, the film; also covers issues such as the end of the world, a nuclear Third World War, and the overthrow of a country's government at much cheaper costs with the control of AI by hackers. The movie is adapted from the book, and the reason why the homeowners return to their homes is the electricity and telephone outages in the city and the state of emergency and chaos that started. It is not known exactly whether there is a disaster or an attack during the first chapters of the movie. However, as always, those close to the power hear about it before the public and take precautions. Meanwhile, the importance of shelter and food storage is also emphasized in the film.
Internet Distraction, Screen Time, and Game World While we watch the relationship between the Sandford family members, their children's screen time limitations, and the effects of the game world on them are also touched upon. On the other hand, the character of Rose, played by Farrah MacKenzie, the couple's younger child, has a strong observation ability. However, Rosa was the first to notice that birds and deer move in groups. The movie also states that the damage done by any superpower, united enemies, or hackers would be less dangerous than the chaos caused by out-of-control artificial intelligence. Again, as in the movie Raised by Wolves, themes such as whether the creation of robots will anger God or whether it is a move of a concept to compete with God are also questioned. It is also emphasized that instead of waiting for help from God and praying, it is necessary to prioritize clinging to the reasons that may be God's answer to our call.

It is discussed in the script that Iran and North Korea may be united. It is also stated that America has made many enemies. We will be reminded that the last and most important step in overthrowing a country's government is to create chaos and prevent people from helping each other and having them target each other. Those who found the film populist were generally conservative circles and opponents of Obama. Movie music seems to have helped the director at many stages. While you watch the experiences of George, a black financier who lives on the Upper West Side and is somewhat close to those who rule the world, Clay, an academic living in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and Amanda, an advertiser who defines her job as lying to people and selling things they do not need, between the lines, you can start questioning your own business if you have not done so until now... Although Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize for his motto of "a world without nuclear weapons," he has been criticized for the loss of civilians because of his approval of drone attacks during his presidency. With this film, he once again stated that he was not pro-war or expansionist. ■ Serra Karaçam is a broadcast journalist born in Istanbul in 1983. THE ART OF DIPLOMACY:
CULTURAL DIPLOMACY AND DIASPORA Sharing cultures can lead to better international relations. By Suheyla Tayla
D
iplomacy is often regarded as one of the oldest professions. At its core, diplomacy is about the artful management of relationships. It requires not only an understanding of the interests and motivations of one's own country but also those of foreign nations. It also involves negotiations and managing relations between nations, transcending mere communication to encompass a complex blend of strategy, tact, and cultural understanding. Diplomats must navigate a labyrinth of political, economic, and cultural landscapes, often under the pressure of maintaining peace and forging alliances. The ability to survey and navigate these landscapes is crucial in a world full of global issues such as climate change, terrorism, and trade disputes. Over time, cultural diplomacy has emerged as a vital component in the diplomat's toolkit—a sub-set of public diplomacy. This idea refers to the practice of using cultural resources, such as art, music, dance, literature, and heritage, 64 TURKNETWORK | JAN 2024
to foster mutual understanding and cooperation between nations. It is an approach that transcends the traditional language of diplomacy—which often revolves around political, economic, and security concerns—to touch the human spirit directly. This form of diplomacy is particularly effective in building longterm relationships and breaking down stereotypes and misconceptions. It both enhances mutual understanding and cooperation between nations and enriches the global cultural landscape. The concept of cultural diplomacy is not new. It has historical roots in various forms of cultural exchanges, such as trade along the Silk Road, which
connects cultures across multiple continents and countries. In the 20th century, cultural diplomacy took on a more structured form, especially during times of tension, as government officials saw its value. For instance, during the Cold War, American jazz musicians toured the Soviet Union, transcending political ideologies and creating a shared space of appreciation and understanding. In the contemporary world, cultural diplomacy takes various forms. It is no longer just about showcasing national culture, but also about engaging in a dialogue that respects and celebrates cultural diversity. Countries invest in cultural exchange programs, art exhibitions, music festivals, academic exchanges, cultural festivals, and language teaching programs. For example, the British Council, Alliance Française, and GoetheInstitut are prime examples of cultural diplomacy in action. These organizations promote language learning and cultural exchange, and they foster connections that transcend national boundaries. They have locations in the Washington, DC, and across the US. The power of cultural diplomacy lies in its ability to
PUBLIC RELATIONS
reach beyond governments and speak directly to the people. This form of diplomacy acknowledges that while we may speak different languages and have different traditions, there is a universal language in the arts and humanities that can create a common ground. Diaspora’s Unique Role in Sharing the Soul of a Nation Diaspora communities, made up of people who have left their country of origin but maintain active connections with it, are de facto ambassadors of their culture in the countries they moved into. They carry with them the traditions, languages, and perspectives of their homelands, and they often strive to share the soul of their nation with their new communities. The diaspora can act as a bridge between their country of origin and their country of residence. The role of diaspora communities has emerged as an increasingly vital component of the cultural diplomacy. Cultural diplomacy— the strategic use of cultural exchanges to facilitate mutual understanding and cooperation between nations—and diaspora—communities living outside
their country of origin—are two sides of the same coin in promoting crosscultural dialogue and understanding. Diaspora communities have a pivotal role in weaving together the diverse fabrics of nations through a shared appreciation of cultural heritage, arts, and human connection. They facilitate cultural exchanges by organizing cultural festivals, art exhibitions, and other events that showcase their heritage. These activities not only help maintain the cultural identity of the diaspora but also introduce their new neighbors to a different culture, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation. Moreover, diaspora communities can play a significant role in international diplomacy. They can influence the foreign policy of their resident countries, lobby for bilateral issues, and act as mediators in times of conflict. Their unique position of having ties to both countries puts them in an ideal place to facilitate dialogue and understanding. DIASPORA COMMUNITIES CONTRIBUTE TO CULTURAL DIPLOMACY IN SEVERAL WAYS: ● Cultural Preservation and Promotion: They play a crucial role in preserving their native cultures in foreign lands. Through festivals, cultural events, and language schools, they keep their traditions alive and accessible. ● Economic and Social Links: Diasporas can facilitate trade and investment between their host and home countries. They have an in-depth understanding of both cultures and can navigate both business environments effectively. ● Policy Influence: Diasporas can influence the foreign policy of their resident countries toward their countries of origin. They can lobby for favorable policies or aid in conflict resolution. ● Soft Power Enhancement: Diaspora communities can enhance the soft power of their countries of origin by showcasing positive aspects of their culture, thereby improving their country's image abroad.
While cultural diplomacy and diaspora engagement offer immense potential, they also face challenges. One significant challenge is the risk of cultural appropriation and misunderstanding. When engaging in cultural exchange, it is crucial to approach other cultures with respect and sensitivity, ensuring that such exchanges are authentic and mutually beneficial. Another challenge is the political climate. In times of political tension, cultural and diaspora diplomacy can be overshadowed by security and economic concerns. However, it is precisely in these challenging times that cultural diplomacy can play a crucial role in maintaining open lines of communication. The digital age presents both challenges and opportunities. Social media and digital platforms have made it easier to share cultural content across borders. Online film festivals, virtual art exhibitions, and digital academic exchanges are becoming increasingly common, allowing for a broader and more inclusive reach. However, this also means that cultural diplomacy initiatives must be more innovative and engaging to capture the attention of a global audience. To maximize the impact of cultural diplomacy and diaspora engagement, several strategies can be employed: ● Collaborative Projects: Encouraging collaborative cultural projects between countries can create a platform for shared experiences and learning. ● Empowering Diaspora Communities: Governments and organizations should support diaspora communities in their efforts to promote their culture, which can include funding cultural events and providing platforms for cultural exchange. ● Leveraging Digital Platforms: Using digital media and social networks can amplify the reach of cultural diplomacy initiatives, connecting people across the globe. ● Educational Exchanges: Promoting student and academic exchanges can foster a deeper understanding of different cultures from a young age. TURKISH DIASPORA IN BRIDGING WORLDS THROUGH ARTS AND HERITAGE For Türkiye—a nation with a rich cultural heritage and a significant diaspora community across the world—cultural diplomacy is not just a means of foreign policy, but also a bridge connecting the Turkish diaspora to their homeland and introducing the world to the depths of Turkish culture. The Turkish diaspora is vast and diverse, encompassing millions of people across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and around the globe. We observe selfless works and efforts of the diaspora members to promote Turkish culture, language, and heritage abroad through a variety of 66 TURKNETWORK | JAN 2024
means, including cultural centers, Turkish language courses, art exhibitions, music and film festivals, culinary events, and academic exchanges. These initiatives not only help maintain the cultural identity of the Turkish diaspora but also introduce the richness of Turkish culture to a broader audience, facilitating cultural exchanges and dialogue with other communities. It is particularly effective in building long-term relationships, breaking down stereotypes, and promoting a positive image of Türkiye. The Turkish diaspora in Germany is a prime example of the impact of cultural diplomacy. The Turkish community, numbering over three million, is the largest immigrant group in Germany.
Cultural events like the Berlin Turkish Film Festival and the establishment of Turkish studies programs in German universities have played a significant role in promoting Turkish culture and fostering mutual understanding. Another case study is the Turkish diaspora in the United States. Though smaller in size, it is actively engaged in cultural diplomacy. Turkish diaspora organizations across the US organize events that showcase Turkish arts, music, and cuisine. These initiatives not only celebrate Turkish culture, but also facilitate cultural exchange and dialogue with American society. One of the key elements of maintaining success and continuity is to establish a solid platform celebrating the heritage for the younger generation born and raised abroad. At this point, cultural diplomacy initiatives have a profound impact on the young Turkish diaspora members. They provide a sense of connection to their homeland. Events celebrating Turkish culture, language, and history help maintain cultural ties and identity. One of the best examples of these events is the annual Turkish Festival in Washington, DC, by ATADC, bringing together thousands of Turkish Americans, showcasing Turkish culture through dance, music, and food. In this picture, we need to mention that, in the sense of Türkiye's cultural diplomacy, despite its successes, among the generic challenges faced by the diaspora mentioned above, the most challenging issue for the Turkish diaspora in the US is the bilateral or multilateral political tensions that impact cultural initiatives. However, these challenges also present opportunities. As noted above, cultural diplomacy can serve as a platform for dialogue in times of conflict to maintain open lines of communication. It can play a crucial role in addressing bilateral as well as global issues such as migration and integration, by fostering a sense of shared responsibility and common humanity. In conclusion, as the world becomes

increasingly interconnected, the role of diplomacy will continue to evolve. Issues such as climate change, cyber security, and global health crises will require even more collaboration and innovative diplomatic strategies. Cultural diplomacy and diaspora engagement become a vital tool in this modern diplomatic arsenal and represent a nuanced and humancentric approach to this interconnected, intertwined, complex, and complicated international relations environment. The future of cultural diplomacy and diaspora engagement is promising but requires careful navigation. Cultural diplomacy is a vital component of Türkiye's engagement with its diaspora and the wider world. For Türkiye and its diaspora, cultural diplomacy is a powerful tool for building bridges, connecting the Turkish diaspora with their roots, and introducing the global community to the rich tapestry of Turkish culture while celebrating diversity and creating a shared sense of identity and belonging in the global community. The art of diplomacy is evolving, and cultural diplomacy and diaspora engagement are at the forefront of this evolution. Governments, cultural institutions, and diaspora communities need to work together to promote genuine and respectful cultural exchanges. This collaboration can lead to more robust international relationships built on a foundation of mutual understanding and respect. Sharing the richness of different cultures, in a world divided by political and ideological differences, cultural diplomacy and diaspora offer a path toward a more interconnected, harmonious, empathetic, and peaceful global community. ■

TRACING THE WORKS OF AN ARCHITECTURAL GENIUS: SINAN
“I hope that as long as this World remains, those good-hearted people who shall look upon my work would notice my efforts and remember me with their blessings, God willing!” By Nil Güler
M
any years ago, I attended an international meeting in Rome, where the conversation shifted to Michelangelo. Particularly for the Italian colleagues, he was revered as their genius painter, sculptor, architect, and poet. As I listened with admiration, my Turkish identity remained unknown to the group. Then, an Italian participant stood up and remarked, “There was a contemporary of Michelangelo who produced many genius works at that time. His name is Architect Sinan.” It was a great honor for us to have had such an architect and to be proud of his numerous works. Various sources indicate Sinan's birth year to be between 1489 and 1490, although this date is not confirmed by any records and could be later. It is believed that Sinan lived to be over 100 years old. Selected as part of the devshirme system 68 TURKNETWORK | JAN 2024
from Ağırnas, Kayseri, he was taken to Istanbul and enrolled in the Janissary Corps, attached to the Lodge of Hacı Bektaş Veli, during Sultan Selim II's reign. After the Battle of Mohacs in August 1526, he was promoted to "chief archer." During the invasions of Baghdad and Tebriz, he was tasked with building ships to cross Lake Van. His successful ship construction earned him the title of hasekilik, meaning he belonged exclusively to the sultan and his works. In the Prut war, he built a vast bridge over the River Prut, enabling the Sultan and the Ottoman Army to secure a victory against the Russian Army because of the new River Prut Bridge. Sinan, a unique figure of the Ottoman Age, became the head of the Mimaran-ı Hassa (Guild of Hassa Architects) around 1538-39. He was responsible for all construction projects across the vast Ottoman Empire.
Besides designing major mosque complexes, Sinan also built smaller mosques. His early architectural works were characterized by their small and simple structures. During Sinan's time, Istanbul saw the construction of numerous "mosque-complexes," known as “Külliye” in Turkish. Sinan carefully selected sites for these complexes, often choosing hilltops or locations near the Bosporus and Marmara Sea. An example is the Şehzade Külliyesi. He also constructed the Hürrem Sultan Külliyesi, dedicated to Sultan Suleyman's beloved wife. In the early 1550s, Sultan Süleyman commissioned Sinan to build two complexes, one in Istanbul and the other in Damascus, the current capital of Syria. For the Süleymaniye complex in Istanbul, Sinan chose the highest sites on the Istanbul peninsula. The complex, covering around sixty thousand square meters, included a mosque, medrasahs, a hospital, a kitchen, and other

facilities, employing 750 workers. Ten years after completing the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque complex at Edirnekapı (between 1562-1565), Sinan began his most important design in the center of Edirne in 1575—the Selimiye Mosque Complex, commissioned by Sultan Selim II. The construction, completed in 1575, has dominated Edirne's skyline. Sinan regarded this mosque as the pinnacle of his architectural career. Sinan's works encompassed various building types, including bridges, water systems with arches, caravanserais, madrasahs, fountains, and hammams. In the Balkans, he designed many bridges for trade routes. For example, the Mostar Bridge in Bosnia Herzegovina, constructed in 1556 under the supervision of his student Architect Hayreddin, was an advanced structure for its time. Unfortunately, it was destroyed in 1993 during the Croat-Bosnia War. Other notable works by Sinan include the Kanuni Sultan Suleiman Bridge, also known as the Büyükçekmece Bridge in Istanbul, and the Mağlova and Uzun Kemer aqueducts, part of the Kırkçeşme Supply System. Throughout his 50-year career, Sinan is credited with constructing or supervising 476 buildings, 196 of which still survive.

REFLECTIONS FROM TÜRKİYE: A PERSONAL ODYSSEY
SEEKING ANSWERS FROM THE MOUNTAIN A vision quest in Bodrum. By Tara Alisbah
A
few years ago, somewhere in the middle of what was going to be a year of living in Bodrum, I left my house and moved to the top of a mountain to live in a tent with my dog. My house had concrete walls and 90-degree angles and huge chunks of my day disappearing to sweeping and cleaning and arranging stuff. Not to mention small talk wtih neighbors I did not necessarily feel like talking to, or shunning, innuendo and gossip, which is probably a more accurate description of my experience of “site” life in Bodrum. I tried finding a place to sleep 70 TURKNETWORK | JAN 2024
outside in the site in a folding mosquito net enclosure I had bought, but it was hard to find a spot where a bekci did not walk past me a few times a night blowing his whistle and oozing curiosity.
What would I have said, anyway? “I’m done with corners and concrete. I need to live in the earth’s womb, in rounded structures. I’m done with the walls and words that separate. I can’t sleep indoors anymore.” The truth is, I was becoming wilder, truer to my own nature, but in this reality and especially in Türkiye they call that “crazy.” Can you imagine a Turkish woman in Bodrum giving up her washing machine and afternoon visits with friends and CHOOSING to sleep on the ground surrounded by wildlife, (and in this case goats) cooking outside? I mean most Turks I know will not even go out if it is raining, or windy or cold… “Aman cereyan carpar! Hasta oluruz…”
REFLECTIONS FROM TÜRKİYE: A PERSONAL ODYSSEY
So I started scouting out remote places I could set up camp and live outside. I mean, the weather is perfect for that kind of life in Bodrum, is it not? I would drive around and up and up, with my dog, and look for places I could be invisible. It turns out that in the hills around Bodrum, even the most secluded parts, there will always be goats, and those goats will always wear bells. I chose a place because I had met the owners, or at least a few members of the owners extended family, and they welcomed me. They said that no one ever went there and that I should be unbothered and safe. The first morning I awoke with the sun after a pretty terrible sleep. It turns out domesticated dogs are not very good at living outside and bark at every little bell and sound. And even up there on that mountain top or maybe on other mountain tops, there were dogs barking throughout the night and oh, how the sound carries! But to wake up that first morning and look out my tent flap at the vast expanse of nature’s beauty—oh how I had ever settled for less I do not know! I am not sure how many weeks I lived up there. I had to go into town for water and food supplies, but other than that I stayed on my mountain and danced around the fire at night and wandered different paths during the days, collecting firewood and finding old cisterns and writing stories about the people who had lived there before me, in my head. I dreamt of opening a camping ground there, in my opinion the best way to get to know Bodrum and her true nature. Of course I imagined it would mostly be non-Turks who would come—since as we established, most Turks would not choose to live outside on the earth for a vacation. I loved cooking outside, chopping veggies outside; no countertops to wipe, no sweeping to be done, sitting and looking at a view while you wash dishes (or dish). How I lived any other way I did not know. How I would ever live another way I did not know. But eventually I did have to come down from the mountain. I was not sleeping. My
dog was not sleeping. There were goats with bells. There were barking dogs. There was my barking dog. To be honest with myself, I did not sleep much when I re-entered the house - those 90 degree angles being one of my pet-peeves and all. But a soft bed and sheets without ants was attractive for a while, even if all I did was lay on them. But my life had so much less meaning between those walls, and my disconnection from the natural world and my own wild self was so complete that I could not find contentment.
And there began my search that continues still to find the place or land or community, or all of it, where my body is at home and my wild nature is nurtured and my “crazy” self is welcome and appreciated. ■ Tara Alisbah is the author of Turkish Hands, Gesturing Your Way Home, a short and amusing book documenting the hand (and facial) language that Turks use to communicate with each other in place of words.

SICILIAN PASTA AND EGGPLANT TIMBALLO
Eggplant takes center stage in the Sicilian Pasta and Eggplant Timballo, a festive, make-ahead dish that is perfect for special occasions. By Sheilah Kaufman
T
he Turks love vegetables, especially eggplant. Here is an eggplant dish from Flavors of the Maghreb & Southern Italy by Alba Johnson, Paula Jacobson, and Sheilah Kaufman (Hippocrene Books, NY 2023). A timballo is an Italian casserole dish or the mold the casserole is cooked in. Food baked in a timballo has a crispy exterior, making it easy to unmold. Sicilian Pasta and Eggplant Timballo is a dish I prepare for birthdays or Christmas Eve—it is always a success! It is often served for Sunday dinner or festive occasions. It is convenient to make because it can be prepared in advance and is easily transported. The eggplant used in this dish will keep the timballo together, because it encloses the pasta and keeps the filling inside. Once the timballo is slightly cooled and unmolded, it will be easy to cut into slices. Serves 4 to 6
5 medium eggplants, sliced lengthwise 1/4-inch thick Extra virgin olive oil for brushing Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 pound mezze penne 6 cups meat sauce 1 1/4 cups grated pecorino, divided 1 cup torn fresh basil leaves 3 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup frozen petite peas, thawed Heat the oven to 400°F. Using a pastry brush, generously brush the eggplant slices on both sides with oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place on a baking sheet in a single layer. You may need to use two baking sheets to fit all the slices. If you use two sheets, bake them individually
or the eggplant will steam instead of roast. Bake until the eggplant becomes slightly golden on both sides, turning only once, 15 to 18 minutes. Heat a 5- to 6-quart pot of water over high heat and bring to a boil. Add the penne and 2 tablespoons of salt; bring it to a second boil. Stir vigorously for the first 45 seconds so the penne will not stick. Cook the penne 2 minutes less than the time on the package directions because the penne will continue to cook in the oven. When the penne is ready, drain it and transfer it to a large bowl. Fold in 2 cups of meat sauce, 1/4 cup pecorino, and the basil. Allow to cool 10 to 15 minutes, then fold in the eggs. Assembling the Timballo Line a 12-cup Bundt pan with the cooked eggplant slices, making sure that the slices overlap with no gaps and hang over the edge of the pan. Setting them on the diagonal makes an especially beautiful dish. You will probably have to place them first around the outer side and then make the next row around the post in the middle. Reserve a few slices to cover the top. Fill the pan with one
third of the penne mixture, press down to make sure it is filling evenly, spread about one-third of the peas over the penne, dollop on a few tablespoons of sauce, top with 1/4 cup pecorino. Repeat the layer two more times, pressing down on the penne each time. You want to build a sturdy structure. Fold the eggplant slices up over the top of the penne to cover. Add the remaining slices of cooked eggplant on top to enclose the timballo. Bake the timballo until a knife inserted comes out clean and it feels as if the filling is not loose, about 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to rest 10 to 15 minutes. Place a large plate over the Bundt pan. Gently invert the Bundt pan to release the timballo onto the plate. Cut into wedges, sprinkle with the remaining 1/4 cup pecorino, and serve with warmed remaining meat sauce on the side. Note: To make ahead, you can either assemble the timballo and refrigerate it until ready to bake, or you can bake it and then refrigerate it still in the bundt pan and reheat when ready to serve. ■ JAN 2024 | TURKNETWORK 73
