As the editor of our magazine, I am thrilled to reach out to you through the pages of our fourth issue. The journey we have embarked upon together has been nothing short of inspiring. With each monthly networking event, we've woven stronger connections within our community, and your positive feedback has been the fuel driving our commitment to make each edition and event a resounding success. January's event was a testament to the power of our network. Stories of business collaborations birthed, career opportunities found, and friendships formed to remind us of the impact we are making. These narratives are not just success stories; they embody our vision at work. Mark your calendars for our upcoming event on March 10. In a panel-style setting, we will focus on celebrating International Women’s Day, honoring women's pivotal role in our community and beyond. This gathering is not just an event; it is a tribute to the strength and diversity of our community. We believe in empowering each voice, ensuring a platform where everyone can share, learn, and grow. Our vision is to be a platform that brings us together, a space where everyone is welcome and can contribute. If you wish to be a part of this journey, we warmly invite you to reach out and join us. Our collective spirit was profoundly demonstrated after the tragic Türkiye Earthquake on February 6, 2023. It was a time that shook us to our core, but also a moment where our community's strength and generosity shone brightly. The Turkish Philanthropy Funds' initiative, supported passionately by our community, raised an astounding $20.5 million, directly impacting over 1.7 million lives. While we acknowledge that the path to recovery is ongoing and more support is needed, this effort highlighted our collective power to make a significant difference. This issue is brimming with content that we hope will inform and inspire you. From in-depth articles to heartwarming stories, each page reflects our vibrant community. As you turn these pages, we hope you feel the sense of pride and connection that we strive to foster. Furthermore, we continually seek to evolve and enhance how we serve and uplift our community. We understand the importance of staying connected, sharing resources, and supporting each other in triumphs and challenges. Our magazine is not just a publication; it is a celebration of our shared heritage, dreams, and aspirations. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for your continuous support. It is your engagement and feedback that shape our magazine and events. Let us continue building this incredible community together, supporting and uplifting each other in every way possible. MARYLAND-TÜRKİYE SISTER STATES COMMITTEE MEMBERS ATTEND THE 32ND ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL SALUTE PROGRAM COMMEMORATING DR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. Maryland-Türkiye Sister States Committee members and friends attended the "32nd International Salute to the Life and Legacy of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast at the Willard Hotel on January 14, 2024. The event was attended by diplomats, presidents of universities, scholars, religious leaders, media, and many community leaders and philanthropists. The program entailed award ceremonies to persons for their outstanding work in carrying the values and ideals of Dr King. over the past 31

years and descriptions of their achievements. Azerbaijan Ambassador H.E.Khazar Ibrahim was the chair of the honorary committee. Attendees were treated to a delightful mini concert by mezzo soprano Bonnie Burnett and saxophonist Brian Lenair. The program ended with the audience and speakers joining to sing "We Shall Overcome" the song of the Civil Rights movement of 1960s reflecting the trials and tribulations of its leader, Dr Martin Luther King Jr. and his followers.

Monday, January 15, 2024, commemorated the birthday of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. This year also marks the 56th anniversary of his tragic killing. Let us continue his struggle for justice, equality, and freedom. Last month, the Turkish American Community honored the life and legacy of a remarkable man, Dr Martin Luther King Jr., and his commitment to equality, justice, and freedom. Dr King never wavered from his peaceful opposition to segregation and discrimination. Indeed, segregation was still exercised in America one hundred years after the Civil War, which claimed the lives of over 620,000 people. The Civil War was the bloodiest American conflict ever.

14 TURKNETWORK | FEB 2024

Dr King faced years of violent opposition from the American government, including arrests, incommunicado detention, and severe interrogation and mistreatment. He did not yield. He continued to use the most powerful weapon he had—his mind, his heart, and his ability to speak. He was eventually assassinated on April 4, 1968, but he was not silenced. Turkish Americans proudly served the cause of equality and justice, standing against segregation. The Turkish Embassy

be treated with dignity. The United States Senate warned the Turkish Embassy not to permit African Americans to attend Embassy social events. The US Department of State offered a "compromise" that Black Americans be admitted from the back door of the Embassy. Turkish Ambassador Munir Ertegun responded that all guests of the Turkish Republic would enter through the front door as equals. Maryland police arrested the Ambassador's son, Ahmet Ertegun, for violating segregation laws in Annapolis. Ahmet Ertegun eventually founded Atlantic Records, where he promoted countless African American and progressive musicians.

■ As Atlantic Records Chairman, Ertegun expressed: "I began to discover a little bit about the situation of African Americans and experienced immediate empathy with these victims of such senseless discrimination because although Turks were never slaves, they were regarded as second-class citizens by Europe because of their Muslim beliefs."

Around the second week in January, there were many farewell parties and meetings for the popular Turkish Ambassador Murat Mercan and his equally popular wife, Mrs. Inci Mercan. Ambassador Mercan retired; however, he needed help connecting his energetic lifestyle with retirement. On January 10, there was an elegant farewell reception at the Embassy. The event was attended by many diplomats, State Department officials, Turkish American NGO leaders, and many Turkish and non-Turkish friends. In his speech, Ambassador Mercan thanked all for their attendance and the support they provided during his term. He invited Mrs. Mercan to the podium and stated that her hard work was critical to his success. It was an emotional moment; there were tears. Throughout his term, the Mercans opened the Embassy to all Turkish Americans and supported all their activities, regardless of the political and religious affiliations and beliefs of the Turkish Americans, That was an important factor in uniting all Turks who are usually adamant about clinging to their various political choices and practicing their democratic rights to the full extent. Both Mercans strived for unity and the success of the Turkish American Community, including Turkic American communities.

FORGOTTEN PIECE IN GREENING THE WORLD: CULTURE Embracing the wisdom of our ancestors and integrating sustainable practices from diverse cultures is crucial for the success of the environmental movement. By Olivia Manzagol

T

he structured environmental movement often appears distant and reserved for specific groups as it becomes a hot topic in daily life and business. However, looking at ancient wisdom practices in the US, Türkiye, or any other country, we find a unique care for nature, primarily through sustainable practices integrated into daily life. This commitment is most evident in the home environment. For example, Anatolians are strongly inclined toward sustainable living through repurposing goods, cultivating vegetable gardens, or practicing mindful electricity consumption. These practices, deeply rooted in their lifestyles, often occur instinctively. Recent studies show that many first- and second-generation immigrants, influenced by their parents' austerity and waste-conscious values, engage in environmentally friendly behaviors. These include recycling

and repurposing everyday items, mindful use of water and electricity, cultivating home vegetable gardens, practicing composting, and making ethical choices in purchases and consumption. Some second-generation migrants recall how their parents unintentionally embraced environmentally friendly practices, such as adopting frugality because of financial challenges or maintaining a connection to the land through gardening, especially those with agricultural backgrounds. A twofold approach is necessary to actively contribute to environmental causes: learning from our ancestors and ensuring the inclusion of these valuable practices in the broader green movement. ■ Olivia Manzagol is an economist, a finance specialist in energy, sustainability, and private equity, a university lecturer, a strategist, a mentor, and an author. UNITY AND RESILIENCE:

TURKISH PHILANTHROPY FUNDS’ COMMITMENT TO REBUILD AND RESTORE IN THE EARTHQUAKE REGION The impact remains profound one year after the catastrophic earthquake in Southeast Türkiye. As we reflect on this period, we want to recognize the significant progress made by the TPF community toward healing, rebuilding, and preparing for a resilient future.

TPF's initial response, rooted in their core objectives—empowering local organizations, ensuring equitable grant distribution, enhancing partner capacities, and upholding accountability—led to impactful collaboration with over 70 TPFVetted Partner Organizations. They could grant $10.5 million through this, directly supporting over 1.7 million people. Their swift action demonstrated the power of unity and the strength of our community, even in the face of adversity. Recently, TPF has been developing and implementing a comprehensive long-term strategy to meet ongoing regional needs. The TPF Earthquake Fund is now structured to provide support in three distinct ways: 1. Continued Grant Provision: The earthquake fund will keep offering grants up to $50,000, now available to non-TPF partners, focusing on supporting NGOs working in under-recognized areas in the earthquake-affected areas, allocating $1 million for this initiative. 2. Enhancing Resilience: With an additional commitment of $1 million, TPF aims to bolster the resilience of the nonprofit sector and the broader community. This involves backing projects that enhance disaster preparedness and prevention for a more proactive and robust response to future earthquakes. 3. Long-Term Funding through Invitation-Only Grants: The remaining funds will be allocated via an invitation-only process. This focused approach ensures efficient and impactful fund use and fosters strong partnerships for sustainable outcomes. TPF's mission extends beyond simple rebuilding. They aspire to transform earthquake-impacted areas into thriving communities. This transformation is envisioned in two phases: firstly, nurturing and sustaining new living spaces to positively impact resident well-being; and secondly, transforming these areas into hubs of urban renewal and economic growth. The ultimate goal is for these communities to not just survive but to evolve into self-sustaining entities full of life and energy.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

By Sitki Kazanci

W

e had the opportunity to speak with TPF’s Executive Director, Senay Ataselim Yilmaz, about their journey from the initial response to their current long-term strategies.

Thank you for joining us today. To begin, how much has Turkish Philanthropy Funds raised for the earthquake fund? First of all, thank you for providing us your platform to talk about our efforts. We are excited to share that we have raised $20.5 million, a testament to our donors' generosity and trust in TPF. Our fundraising efforts began early on February 6, 2023, and the support was immediate and overwhelming. Our staff worked tirelessly, often 18-hour days for a long time, to manage the support and address donor queries.

That is impressive. How did you assess the needs before making grants? Over the years, we have built an extensive network of NGOs in Türkiye. It was about 70 before the earthquake. Right now, it is over 100. We leveraged this network for real-time information and needs assessment immediately after the earthquake. This helped us quickly identify and address urgent needs like food, water, and shelter. Our first grant was made on the day of the earthquake. We made three more within the first week.

How have your funds been allocated so far? We have taken a strategic approach to grantmaking—a strategy that was more than an immediate reaction; it was a comprehensive plan for empowering the affected communities and making the most impactful and efficient use of the funds. Besides the first four grants made in the first week, all grant decisions were made by reviewing proposals, making sure they were aligned with our objectives and criteria, considering factors like the number of people who benefited, the duration of the impact, and the project's capacity to provide solutions to pressing problems. This often involves balancing immediate relief efforts with long-term development projects. To date, we have granted $10.5 million across various areas. These include emergency relief, providing safe spaces for children, education, psychosocial support, and economic development in the affected regions.

FEB 2024 | TURKNETWORK 23

Could you elaborate on your objectives when making these grants? Absolutely. Our focus has been on the hardest-hit areas, ensuring local empowerment, equity, and collaboration. We have focused on engaging with communities affected by the disaster and supporting organizations that provide equal opportunities, especially for marginalized groups. We have ensured efficient resource use and effective recovery efforts by funding capacity-building for nonprofit partners and collaborating with local NGOs. Our approach, emphasizing compassion and transparency, has provided immediate aid and laid the groundwork for sustainable community recovery. Has your strategy evolved for long-term needs? Yes, definitely. We have developed a comprehensive long-term strategy focusing on sustainable recovery and resilience as we progress with our grantmaking. In the future, we are allocating a total of $1 million for grants up to $50,000 and opening the applications to non-TPF partners. Second, we are dedicating an additional $1 million to resilience to strengthen the nonprofit sector and community preparedness against future earthquakes. And lastly, we have allocated

24 TURKNETWORK | FEB 2024

the remaining funds to long-term rebuilding through invitation-only grants. Our goal is to ensure efficient and impactful use of funds and build strong partnerships that will enable sustainable outcomes. We aim to empower communities to rebuild in a way that makes them more resilient to future disasters. What specific areas will you focus on supporting moving forward? Our general fund will continue to support the areas we have been focused on since the beginning, such as WASH, health services, and humanitarian cash assistance. We aim

to keep assisting NGOs dedicated to helping earthquake survivors, especially in regions our long-term needs analysis may not have fully recognized. For our long-term strategy, we've identified four priority areas. First is economic development. We are committed to stimulating economic growth while reinforcing communal identity and resilience. Second is providing support for education to equip younger generations with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for thriving in the 21st century and contributing to their community's resilience and development. Third is supporting Children with Disabilities to ensure children who lost their limbs receive tailored medical treatments and inclusive rehabilitation programs, bolstering their journey toward self-sufficiency, mobility, and empowerment that will outlast the effects of the earthquakes. Lastly, it provides psychosocial support to foster resilience, empowering individuals and communities to recover and rebuild in the aftermath of disaster. Finally, considering Türkiye's vulnerability to earthquakes, we are prioritizing building resilience in communities along major fault lines. This includes supporting preparedness and disaster risk reduction initiatives. We

believe this is essential for the safety and preparedness of everyone in Türkiye. How do you ensure effective use of funds? We prioritize transparency and accountability in all our operations. Regular reports, impact assessments, and site visits are conducted to ensure that every dollar is making a real difference. We also work closely with our partners and local organizations to monitor progress and gather feedback. What is the impact of your efforts? We have directly impacted over 1.7 million individuals, including earthquake survivors, local businesses, and community organizations. Finally, what message would you like to convey to your donors and the wider community? Our heartfelt thanks go to every donor and partner who has supported us. This has been a true community effort, ranging from small donations to large ones. Thanks to your trust in TPF, we are not just rebuilding lives but laying the foundation for a resilient future. Your continued support is crucial for creating lasting positive change in the earthquake-affected regions. Thank you for your time and insights today. Thank you for this opportunity to discuss these important issues. ■

US SANCTIONS, TARIFFS, AND NON-TARIFF BARRIERS:

take pride in fostering US-Türkiye business relations, aiding Turkish investors in accessing the US market, and supporting American companies in Türkiye. TABA-AmCham, extending its presence across Türkiye, now boasts a robust membership of 421, including individuals and corporate entities. Our members benefit significantly from exclusive events, fostering extensive business networks. These gatherings, such as invitations, meetings, and seminars, provide unique opportunities for Turkish businesspeople to connect

with their American counterparts, fostering a strong business network. Our recent Supply Chain Analysis report, focusing on the Organization of Turkic States and their journey toward globalscale production, delves into trade volumes, sectoral distributions, and exportimport statistics between Türkiye and the Turkic Republics. It also explores the current and potential economic relations, trade policies, and barriers, serving as an invaluable resource for strategic decisionmaking in the business world. In 2022, the Turkic States, with a GDP of $1.56 trillion, a population of 174.1 million, and a total foreign trade value of $1.19 trillion, are emerging as a significant economic force. These eight countries represent 2.2% of the global population, 1.54% of global production, and a significant portion of global exports and imports. The need for our comprehensive report on US Sanctions, Tariffs, and Non-Tariff Barriers arises from the intricate interplay between economic growth, trade openness, tariffs, non-tariff measures, and exchange rates. Protectionist trade policies, a focus of our report, significantly impact global trade openness. The US, maintaining its status as a significant economic player since World War II, has actively engaged in multilateral and regional trade agreements. However, there is currently no Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Türkiye and the US, with trade continuing under World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and bilateral agreements. Our report critically analyzes this context, including the impact of protectionism on

trade and economic growth and the potential risks it poses to global welfare, particularly in developing countries. The WTO, a key player in global trade, ensures smooth and free trade flows. The United States, a long-standing member of the WTO, is actively involved in numerous trade disputes, emphasizing the importance of understanding trade regulations affecting US imports and exports. Our report provides an in-depth analysis of various aspects of US trade, including the impact of trade wars with the EU, Japan, and China, the repercussions of the Russia-Ukraine War, and a detailed analysis of the US's foreign trade with Türkiye and FTA countries. This comprehensive report, curated under the expert guidance of Dr Metin Gürler, is a testament to the hard work of our Board of Directors, Executive Board, and Association Headquarters staff. I sincerely thank Dr Metin Gürler and everyone involved in crafting this invaluable resource. ■ Süleyman Ecevit Sanlı, born in 1973 in Mersin-Tarsus, has a distinguished career. The group was designed to be an open, inclusive space for community connection, with a few guidelines to maintain harmony.

Could you walk us through your career journey? My career path was largely shaped during my MBA. I began in the tech industry in 1997, working with major companies like Koc Group, Hewlett-Packard, and Cisco Systems. This experience paved the way for my transition to entrepreneurship in 2013. The İstanbul Economy Summit serves as a beacon, transforming potentials into actions, and fostering international partnerships to address global economic challenges. By Sibel Kulaksiz

s the Executive Board Member of the İstanbul Economy Summit, I had the honor of moderating its seventh iteration at Çırağan Palace on December 8-9, 2023. The Summit, graced by His Excellency Cevdet Yılmaz, Vice President of Türkiye, focused on "Sustainable Living and Smart Cities." It united a diverse group, including policymakers, private sector leaders, academics, diplomatic missions, and international partners. This successful gathering highlighted the collaborative efforts in creating economic opportunities focusing on climate-friendly investments. The deep concern for environmental issues and the proposed solutions to pressing 32 TURKNETWORK | FEB 2024

sustainability challenges were particularly encouraging. The İstanbul Economy Summit is backed by a vision to enhance lives through productive private-sector investments, aiming for mutually beneficial trade relations. Strengthening dialogues with international partners for knowledge exchange on policy and regulatory reforms and fostering new investments through global joint ventures are key aspects of our approach. The Summit's impact has noticeably grown over the past seven years, thanks to efforts by the Chairman of the Executive Board, Mr. Abdullah Değer, and the board members. Its success is attributed to providing an analytical platform for public and private sector leaders to

collaborate on solutions, leading to recommendations for regulatory reforms to unlock economic potential. Additionally, it has facilitated private-sector investments by connecting national and international partners across various economic sectors. Highlighting Türkiye's potential as a regional growth pole with positive spillover effects, the Summit underscored the country's economic opportunities, given its population, land area, nominal GDP, market access, and transportation corridor proximity. Türkiye's economy, bolstered by its strong industrial sector, is expected to grow rapidly in a favorable external environment. Board members see significant opportunities in the real economy, working to tap into the vast potential in the goods

and services sectors. Türkiye's conventional strengths in industries like automotive parts, textiles, household appliances, building materials, and furniture continue to drive exports. Emerging sectors are also gaining focus, including the digital economy with under-utilized potential in data services, software, technology start-ups, and gaming. Potential joint-venture investments in regions like Africa, particularly in construction and infrastructure, are being explored, along with growth opportunities in health, tourism, agriculture, water management, and regional connectivity through transportation, customs, and logistics investments. The İstanbul Economy Summit paves the way from potential to action, emphasizing international partnership to address challenges like production diversification, regional integration, and youth employment. This collaboration is key to addressing broader economic and social development issues, leading toward stability. Türkiye's role in the region's economic stability is expected to contribute to political stability as well. In summary, there is immense potential to strengthen economic dynamics. The Turkish private sector is committed

to diversifying production, particularly intermediate goods, strengthening foreign direct investment and technology transfers, and enhancing competitiveness. The İstanbul Economy Summit is an effective platform for building upon these goals. ■ Sibel Kulaksız is a Senior Economist with the World Bank Group South Asia Region, based in Washington, DC. FINDING LOVE AS A TURKISH AMERICAN:

A ROMANTIC ROADMAP

Embrace the journey toward love with confidence and hope, opening up a world where love transcends cultural barriers. By Burcin Ogrenir, PhD

I

n my professional work within the Turkish community, I have often heard Turkish Americans express their feelings of loneliness, with common refrains like, "I feel so lonely" or "I need someone to share life with." This sense of isolation is particularly pronounced among Turkish Americans who find the pursuit of love and companionship in the United States to be a unique challenge. With Valentine's Day in mind, I am motivated to delve into the nuances of dating in this community, striving to harmonize personal desires with cultural identity and the dynamics of American society.

38 TURKNETWORK | FEB 2024

THE STRUGGLE IS INDEED REAL: THE CHALLENGES Gathering a group of singles, one hears numerous reasons why securing a lasting relationship is difficult. Common issues include a reluctance to commit, significant personality and interest differences, and the deceptive ease of online dating. For Turkish Americans, these challenges are intensified by cultural differences. Cultural Differences: Many Turkish Americans find it challenging to balance the collectivist nature of Turkish culture with the individualistic tendencies of American culture. While avoiding generalizations, a typical

Turkish person might prioritize family-oriented values; whereas, individual goals and autonomy are often more valued in American culture. This can lead to misunderstandings, like a Turkish man being seen as overly attached, or an American as self-centered. Differing gender role expectations can also be a hurdle. For example, my friend Sibel looks for a level of pursuit and dedication in a relationship that she was used to in Türkiye, along with a love for large family gatherings. Without mutual understanding and discussion of these cultural nuances, the path to a successful relationship can be fraught with disappointments.

PSYCHOLOGY

Navigating the nuances of dating in a cross-cultural context is not just a challenge, but an opportunity for profound connections and growth.

Limited Opportunities to Meet Other Turkish Singles: One Turkish single woman shared her desire to "listen to Sezen Aksu and enjoy it with my husband." Although many Turkish individuals are open to crosscultural dating and marriage, there is a preference among some to find a Turkish partner. This is especially challenging in areas with limited Turkish representation. The complexity of American dating, with its casual norms and unspoken rules, can be daunting for those accustomed to a more direct approach to romance. The American practice of casual dating and "ghosting" can be confusing and disheartening for those familiar with straightforward dating customs. These challenges, while significant, are not insurmountable. With understanding, patience, and the right approach, Turkish Americans can overcome these hurdles to find partners and build meaningful, fulfilling relationships. But how? WHERE THE SINGLES ARE Through my coaching, I have met many who have found love in various settings, from social circles and dating apps to childhood friends from Türkiye. Let us delve deeper into these avenues: Social Environments: Social circles provide comfort and familiarity, ideal for meeting potential partners with similar interests or cultural backgrounds. Social gatherings with mutual friends offer excellent opportunities to connect, creating a

Language Barrier: Language barriers significantly impact the dating scene. This is particularly true for recent US arrivals, where conveying humor and emotion in a second language can hinder forming deep, romantic connections. While dating can inadvertently become a way to improve English, it should not be the primary goal. However, a lack of English proficiency should not deter one from dating. Be bold, improve your language skills, and confidently enter the dating world.

foundation of trust and ease for relationship growth. Step out of your comfort zone and mingle in these settings. Online Dating: Online dating platforms are a primary resource for meeting others. They allow setting specific preferences, including cultural background, making it easier to find someone who aligns with your values and interests. Forbes Health reports that 70% of individuals who met someone through a dating app said it led to a romantic, exclusive relationship. Embrace this tool confidently. Connections from Türkiye: Maintaining connections with people from Türkiye can open doors to romantic opportunities, especially given the shared cultural and linguistic background. While long-distance relationships have their challenges, they can be deeply rewarding. Community Events: Community events are excellent for meeting individuals with a strong connection to Turkish culture. Engage in activities like participating in Turkish student associations or attending Turkish music concerts and cultural festivals.

Workplace and Volunteering: The workplace and volunteering are common settings for finding a romantic partner, especially in culturally diverse environments. Your Self Confidence is Key: Confidence is crucial in the journey of finding love. Believe in yourself and your worth as you navigate the complexities of dating, whether online or in person. In summary, the quest for love as a Turkish American is challenging but filled with potential for rich, culturally diverse relationships. Embrace your journey with confidence and hope, opening up a world where love transcends individual and cultural barriers, creating relationships that are as rewarding as they are diverse. ■ Dr Burcin Ogrenir, a Family and Parenting Coach and the Director of April Institute, specializes in child development, personal growth, family dynamics, and education. REBUILDING LIVES THROUGH EDUCATION:

BRIDGE TO TÜRKİYE FUND'S REMARKABLE JOURNEY OF HOPE One year later the earthquake's impact lingers. The Bridge to Türkiye Fund's educational efforts offer healing and hope. By Dilek Livaneli

E

xactly one year has passed since the earthquake disaster in Türkiye. The areas affected by the earthquake included 11 cities in the southeastern part of the country. These devastating earthquakes resulted in the loss of more than 50,000 lives, leaving many more displaced and struggling to rebuild. The impact of this tragedy manifested itself in a variety of ways, including posttraumatic problems, profound financial difficulties, and the great emotional struggles of coping with the loss of loved ones. Despite the passage of time, the affected population continues to grapple with the challenges of such a profound disaster. The Bridge to Türkiye Fund (BTF) made a magnificent effort to heal the wounds of the earthquake disaster of the last century through education. I want everyone to be aware of the existence of BTF in this beautiful TurkNetwork magazine. On February 6, 2023, the BTF urgently launched a grassroots emergency response mobilization to alleviate the devastation following the earthquake. Working hand in hand with supporters, leaders, and partners, BTF has created a formidable relief action plan. It is truly admirable that this aid plan continues unabated. I have been involved in educational support projects with BTF for years, focusing particularly on village schools and teacher candidates. As Turks living abroad, you will experience great happiness and pride 42 TURKNETWORK | FEB 2024

by participating in this aid bridge that extends to our country. Donors always desire transparency regarding where their contributions go, and they witness how significant differences can be made with small donations. Trust is the most crucial sentiment in donation platforms, and I witnessed a concrete example of this when I volunteered as a teacher in the earthquake zone last August. Thanks to ATADC's generous donations to BTF, we established a wonderful container classroom in Osmaniye. Scholarships were provided for many female students affected by the earthquake through the proceeds

of the International Women's Day Event organized by the ATADC community and hosted by the Washington Embassy. This had a truly incredible impact, bringing me to tears to see Turks from miles away in America being so sensitive and coming together to make a difference. It was also a great honor for me to receive the International Leading Women Award given by ATADC every year. The primary goal of the meetings we held with the New York BTF at the United Nations podium and the Chicago BTF at the consulate was to call for emergency aid in the earthquake zone.

WE BUILD BRIDGES IN EDUCATION

In Samandağ and Defne, 26 container classrooms, generously funded by donor communities, are now equipped with air conditioners, student and teacher desks, and whiteboards for enhanced teaching and learning experiences. Our goal is to create optimal learning environments by promoting the success of every student. BTF's commitment to expanding educational opportunities is clearly seen in the construction of 5 school buildings, 6 kindergarten buildings, and 4 container rehabilitation centers for children with special needs. Additionally, 1,085 "Hope" scholarships, 26 fully equipped containers, and BTF's training kits contribute to the empowerment of the next generation. We aim to support students affected by the earthquake not only in their survival but also in their development!

EDUCATION

KINDERGARTEN SCHOOL PROJECTS: In the regions affected by the earthquake, the construction of 5 early education areas, each with two classrooms, one floor, and a capacity of 100 students, continues. Additionally, BTF provides technology kits and educational resources to support the development of 250 children with autism who survived the earthquake. BTF's unwavering commitment continues as we collaborate with new partners to further develop the seismic zone. Join us on this meaningful journey to build bridges in education; your support makes a lasting impact on the lives of these students.

Embark on my journey from a village school teacher to a global educator through the guide I have crafted for prospective teachers, now distributed by BTF to future educators. Ahmet Rüstem Bey: A Diplomat's Journey from Controversy to Legacy, Bridging Cultures and Navigating Political Tides.

THE MANY VISITS OF A DIPLOMAT By Mehmet Ali Munir

I

n 1774, the Continental Congress appointed John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson as treaty commissioners, considering the Ottoman Empire a potential negotiation partner for recognition. In 1786, Adams discussed a mission to the Sublime Porte with the French Foreign Minister. William Smith of South Carolina, then Minister to Portugal, was appointed Minister Resident to the Sublime Porte in 1799, with full authority to negotiate a treaty of amity and commerce. This mission, however, was abandoned because of the French invasion of Egypt. During this period, Ahmet Rüstem Efendi emerged as a noteworthy diplomat from the Empire, ultimately becoming the last Ottoman Ambassador to the US. Born on the island of Midilli as Alfred de Bilinsky to Polish refugee Seweryn Bielinski and Mary Sandison, daughter of the British consul in Bursa, he converted to Islam and became Ahmed Rüstem, deeply connected to his birth country. Fluent in multiple languages, including Arabic, French, German, Greek, Italian, Persian, and Turkish, his diplomatic career was extensive. Rüstem Efendi's first assignment in Washington, DC was in April 1897 as Chief Secretary, following various diplomatic roles in Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, and England. He briefly left foreign service to participate in the GrecoTurkish War, earning a military medal. His tenure in the US was marked by controversy. After being appointed as Chief Secretary of the London Embassy in 1898, he returned to the Washington Embassy in January 1899. Around 1901, he faced issues with the Ottoman Legation in Washington, leading to his

departure and loss of diplomatic status after exposing corruption in an article for the Daily Mail. After spending time in the UK, Malta, and Egypt, Rüstem Efendi rejoined the foreign service following Abdulhamid II's loss of power in 1909, becoming the chargé d'affaires in Washington. In 1914, he was appointed Ambassador to Washington, replacing Ziya Pasha, and became the first full ambassador. His initial efforts in America included an attempt to prevent the sale of battleships to Greece, although he was unsuccessful. Rüstem Efendi also highlighted the need for counter-propaganda against anti-Turkish sentiment in America, particularly from Greek and Armenian sources. His comments in an article about American internal affairs led President Wilson to declare him persona non grata, though he remained in the US after refusing to apologize. In 1914, as the Ottoman government abolished the capitulations, Rüstem Efendi returned to Istanbul, concluding his diplomatic duties in America. Mustafa Kemal Pasha later acknowledged his diplomatic skills in 1919. Rüstem Efendi contributed to the War of Independence, serving at the Sivas Congress and as a translator in meetings with American General Harbord. He later represented Ankara in the last Ottoman Parliament and the Grand National Assembly. Despite facing a death sentence by the sultan's decree in 1920, he lived off a government pension until he died in 1935 at 73. Ahmet Rüstem Bey's adventurous and significant diplomatic life remains a notable historical chapter. ■ Mehmet Ali Munir is a Balkan Turk who has lived in Canada and the US for 45 years. THE CITY THAT BLEW UP FROM A DUST BOWL TO SKYSCRAPER CAPITAL OF 83 MILLION PEOPLE ANKARA is a rare seat of government without a seashore or major river. By Uğur Akıncı

f you happen to think that “Constantinople” is still the capital of Türkiye, this post is especially for you since Ankara has been the capital city of this country of 83 million since 1923. Time to update your databank. Ankara happens to have a long history dating back to the BC era, but its emergence as a prominent city is relatively new. Captured by Alexander the Great in 334 BC, Ankara was later integrated into the Roman Empire under Augustus. It became an Ottoman city in 1393, transforming into 46 TURKNETWORK | FEB 2024

the Angora Vilayet from 1867 to 1922. Following the Turkish War of Independence, Ankara was officially designated as the capital of the newly founded Turkish Republic on October 13, 1923. No Shoreline or Major River Remarkably, Ankara is one of the few capitals worldwide lacking a shoreline or significant river. This geographical disadvantage makes its rapid growth over the past century even more impressive. Then and Now… In the 1920s, Ankara, despite being the

capital, resembled a dust bowl more than a city, with just a few thousand residents. So, what fueled its transformation into today's bustling metropolis of 5.6 million? Seat of Government Ankara has been Türkiye's government hub for a century. Hosting the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (Parliament), ministerial buildings, the General Accounting Office, The Supreme Court, and other high courts, it underscores its political significance. The new Presidential Palace Complex further highlights Ankara's role as the political center of this 83-million-strong nation.

HISTORY Ankara: From a Modest Dust Bowl to a Thriving Metropolis of Over 83 Million. A University City Ankara is also a hub of education, home to numerous prestigious universities and research institutions. Attracting hundreds of thousands of students annually, these educational institutions have turned Ankara into a magnet for the youth. A City of Middle-Class Civil Servants Given its status as the location for all government ministries, Ankara naturally has a substantial middle-class civil servant population.

■ Anitkabir - Mausoleum of Atatürk

A City of Skyscrapers Ankara is more than just a government city; it is a place of significant capital investment. This is evident in the plethora of residential and commercial skyscrapers that dot its skyline, transforming it into a city of high-rises. Shopping Malls The city's wealth is also reflected in its numerous luxurious shopping malls, hosting a wide range of well-known Western brands. Despite the country's economic challenges, these malls continue to thrive.

■ The new Presidential Complex in Ankara

In Closing… Projected to reach a population of 6.2 million by 2025, Ankara, despite current economic hurdles, is poised to remain a vital center of governance, politics, education, and commerce for many years to come. ■ Uğur Akıncı, PhD, is a writer who worked for Fortune 100 companies including ADP, Fannie Mae, and Honeywell. A CUP OF TRADITION:

ELEVATING TURKISH COFFEE ON THE WORLD STAGE By sharing the story of Turkish coffee, we do more than serve a beverage; we pour a 500-year-old tradition into every cup. By Talip Murat Kolbaşı

M

y previous articles have focused on my findings regarding Turkish coffee, its history, and the integration of technology in its development, as well as its recognition as part of the "intangible cultural heritage of Türkiye" by UNESCO. Today, I would like to discuss how you can contribute to popularizing Turkish coffee and its culture internationally, and ensure its legacy for future generations. I will illustrate what we can achieve with a few examples. Firstly, I encourage you to request Turkish coffee at every cafe, hotel, or restaurant you visit abroad, even if it's not on the menu. This is a point I emphasize at every conference and event where I speak. I practice this regularly when traveling abroad, always asking for Turkish coffee to offer my guests. While this may initially seem inconsequential, it is an important action and a significant step in creating demand for Turkish coffee abroad and introducing it to those unfamiliar with it. I believe that, though it may not happen immediately through the efforts of a few individuals, Turkish coffee will gradually find its place on menus, and our culture will gain popularity in those countries. Everyone should experience the same enjoyment I do while drinking Turkish coffee.

Moreover, I recommend that you enhance the Turkish coffee experience for your guests by purchasing Turkish coffee machines, available in the USA, to help preserve the Turkish Coffee heritage. Even without a coffee machine, you can use a coffee pot to make Turkish coffee for your guests, offering them the same delightful experience. You can be an ambassador of Turkish hospitality. Given that many readers of this article are in the US, I particularly advise cafe and restaurant owners to add Turkish coffee to their menus. As I mentioned in my previous article, it is significant and valuable for them to include various Anatolian dishes from the Ottoman era, as well as different types of Turkish coffee, on their menus. The menu should feature at least five Turkish coffee options, including classic, milk, cardamom, and Tarz-ı Hususi. The variety of coffee we offer can foster admiration for our culture. I want to remind you that Turkish coffee, unique in being the only coffee served with grounds, embodies a concept of grinding, brewing, and presentation. You can provide the Turkish coffee experience with finely ground coffee beans of your choice, available abroad. You can easily make your own Turkish coffee by finely grinding your usual coffee beans, enjoying the familiar aroma. Always remember to serve a glass of water,

candy, or Turkish delight with coffee, and explain the reason for these accompaniments. Whether you are a cafe or restaurant owner or hosting a foreign guest at home, my final advice is to share the story of Turkish coffee, its cultural significance, and various related rituals, especially with those trying it for the first time. In essence, it is vital that we convey the true story of a culture passed down for more than 500 years. I believe this culture, combining a rich history, the deliciousness and unique presentation of Turkish coffee, and Turkish hospitality, will undoubtedly be admired by other coffee cultures. Wherever you are, do not hesitate to request Turkish coffee, whether it is on the menu or not. If necessary, explain to the barista how to prepare, brew, and present it. In doing so, our coffee culture, a precious heritage, will continue to thrive for generations and spread globally. ■ Learn more about Arzum Okka here. TECHNOLOGY

BEYOND BILLIONS:

A GUIDE TO BUILDING ENDURING VALUE IN TECH STARTUPS True success in the tech world is not just measured by fundraising rounds, but by building ventures that are sustainable, scalable, and ready for the unpredictable. By Guclu Ozenci

I

n the rapidly evolving technology landscape of today, media headlines often spotlight multibillion-dollar valuations and substantial funding rounds secured by high-profile entrepreneurs. However, the real question is: What truly defines success, and is there a roadmap to achieving global growth across multiple regions? Additionally, do early-stage founders fully understand that each fundraising round involves committing to new investors? My close collaboration with pre-seed stage founders includes working with a dedicated team of mentors, seasoned entrepreneurs, and experts. We guide these founders in building scalable ventures through a proven framework and curriculum. Our method involves pushing them to complete weekly assignments, known as "sprints," similar to the rapid development cycles in software development, which occur every ten days. However, the challenging nature of our 14-week program often leads to exhaustion for many participants, resulting in dropout rates. Only the resilient 30% who persevere have the opportunity to continue their entrepreneurial journey and potentially embark on a fundraising endeavor. The January issue explored key players in the tech ecosystem and the pivotal

role investors play in supporting emerging startups. While some founders opt for bootstrapping, funding their early-stage ventures until they gain traction, others choose to wait, allowing considerable traction to build before increasing their venture's valuation. This strategy helps them secure more funding while giving up less equity. Once startups enter the fundraising arena, they are expected to continuously grow and secure further funding rounds. Investors strategically invest in ventures they believe will yield profitable exits in the future. This exit strategy often involves selling equities to laterstage investors or waiting for a potential IPO. Reflecting on the post-pandemic economic surge, it is evident that investors, particularly venture capitalists, capitalized on the influx of capital. This led to a spike in startup valuations and sometimes a fear of missing out (FOMO) among investors. Early-stage founders may view fundraising as a key metric of success. However, the real measure of success is building a sustainable venture. Fundraising can sometimes pressure founders to chase rapid growth without considering profitability or sustainability, relying too much on external funding. This approach was popular when capital was plentiful. However, with the current economic climate, investors are now looking for ventures that prioritize sustainability over

rapid, externally fueled growth. Coming from a region with financial constraints, stringent investor criteria, economic crises, high client expectations, and limited resources, I lean toward building ventures that are not only scalable but also sustainable and prepared for unpredictable challenges. Today, most investors advocate for careful spending, extending the runway, and steady, calculated growth. I believe this is the optimal approach. The most successful startups, in my opinion, will emerge during economic constraints—focusing on traction, sustainable growth, and strategically timing fundraising efforts. FRIENDSHIP AS AN ESSENTIAL FOR A GOOD LIFE In the journey of life, friendships evolve from pleasure and utility to complete relationships, mirroring our own personal growth and changing values.

By Melisa Gulsun Ozmen

U

ndoubtedly, friendship is one of the essential elements of living a good life. Aristotle, the ancient Greek philosopher who lived from 384 BC to 322 BC in the kingdom of Macedon (now part of Greece) under Alexander the Great, emphasized the importance of friendship in his "Nicomachean Ethics." He described friendship as the most necessary part of life, stating, “For no one would choose to live without friends, even if he had all the other goods.” Aristotle noted that friendship should be based on reciprocated goodwill. Individuals seeking to form friendships should have goodwill toward each other, wish well for one another, and be aware of their mutual attitudes.

LIFE COACHING

Friendships, however, vary in nature. Aristotle categorized them into three types: pleasure, utility, and complete friendships. As we age and mature, our friendships may evolve from one category to another, influenced by changing life conditions and purposes. During our youth, our relationships typically center around feelings and pleasures. We choose friends who bring us pleasure rather than for their inherent traits. For instance, we might befriend a witty person not for his wit but because his company is enjoyable. Such friendships, often formed during school and university years, include short-term sexual relationships and nonsexual friendships alike. Aristotle's second type, utility friendships, resemble those of pleasure. Here, we choose friends not for their character but for the benefits they bring. These often occur during our career-building years, like friendships formed in the workplace or for business purposes. A contemporary term for this is "friendships with benefits," prevalent in individualistic cultures like the United States. This does not mean we do not genuinely care for these friends. Our affection stems from the utility and pleasure they provide. However, pleasure and utility friendships are usually coincidental and temporary. Mixing utility and pleasure friendships can lead to conflicts of interest, as the love in such friendships fades when the benefits cease. Life's constant changes may dissolve these friendships naturally, and there is no guilt in this. In middle age, we begin to value our time more and seek virtues like honesty, integrity, and trust in our friendships. Aristotle referred to friendships based on shared virtues and values as complete friendships. These are deliberate choices, not based on the utility or pleasure provided by the friend. Goodwill and mutual support are key in these enduring and rare relationships. The pursuit of complete friendships transcends changing life conditions and hinges on quality communication and conversation. Being aware of the type of friendship we are in can prevent interpersonal conflicts. Understanding the purpose of the friendship

allows clear expectations. In pleasure friend- Achieving a complete friendship with ourships, mutual enjoyment keeps the balance. selves means that the only type of friendship In utility friendships, a just measure of benefit we need is complete friendships. Aristotle maintains harmony. In complete friendships, echoes this in Nicomachean Ethics, stating, the balance is maintained through personal “The excellent person is related to his friend decisions, without zero-sum calculations. in the same way as he is related to himself, Friendship is just one part of life's larger since a friend is another himself.” To this, I pie, which includes partnerships, marriage, add, “No one should live without a complete family, career, financial well-being, mental friendship with oneself, even if he had all the and physical health, personal growth, creativ- other goods.” ■ ity, spirituality, and even solitude. CRYING BABIES, MOTHERHOOD, AND CAREER

Two TV series rescue mothers with small babies who feel like life is almost over and they will never be able to return to their careers... These two series convey the message "you are not alone" on motherhood, cultural codes, women's role in parenting, and career pauses. By Serra Karacam

motherhood is a major challenge, not a small hassle for many women. One of the discussions of women's equality with men is the business of feminism. However, the mother category is distinct from the women category even though it is still one of the main areas of feminism. This is because many of the problems mothers face—social, economic, political, cultural, psychological, and so forth— are specific to women’s roles and identity as mothers.1 Mothers are in a non-stop rush for months after birth, dealing with everything from breastfeeding to patting the child every time it cries, soothing it, cleaning it by changing its diaper repeatedly, and putting it to sleep. And of course, endless judgments they face. While the choice of not being a mother is a single matter of being judged, when you become a mother, you can be judged on millions of issues... The Letdown, released in 2017, is an Australian production and can be watched on Netflix. In addition to the transformation process that

Audrey and Jeremy go through with the baby, the experiences of other mothers and couples that Audrey encounters at the parenting group she reluctantly attends are also told. Audrey is a copywriter. There are different examples of a mother, for example, one who has a child with a donor, another a couple where the mother continues her career and the husband looks after the child as a "housewife." The show progresses in a balance of drama and comedy. Another series is Workin' Moms. In the series, which takes place in Toronto, Canada, the comedy side is more dominant in telling the story of the journey of a group of mothers. Psychiatrist, PR specialist, real estate agent, but all mothers... The length of leave that workplaces give to mothers varies. Parents are protected by the law for up to 12 weeks (FMLA). Some mothers take these three months of maternity leave, while others take another three months of unpaid but job-protected leave to complete their stay at home for 6 months, depending on their contract. Some people take a break from their working life for the first year, which is called "long leave" or "career break." Of course, they can return to their job once they are done. The period of sitting at home, especially in the first months, begins as a period when the mother barely has time even to take a shower.

While mothers who are exposed to a bombardment of information strive to make the right choices, they also face pressure from their immediate environment. This starts during pregnancy. For example, some women do not have the chance to have a normal birth, no matter how much they want it. Some people prefer a cesarean section even though it is not a necessity. Then the issue of breastfeeding comes into play. No matter how much breastfeeding training they have received, some mothers start to give their babies formula, thinking that their milk supply is not enough. Some give a bottle for a few days to let their wounds heal. Then the baby gets used to the bottle and no longer accepts the breast. Should your baby sleep alone in the room, or should you go to him immediately when he cries? Topics go on like this. In this process, if they have decided to have children with their partner and are still together, they expect support from the baby's father. *** Some women who take a break from their jobs also go into an identity crisis. While they want the people who are temporarily assigned to take care of their duties at the workplace to be successful in managing, they

may start to worry about whether they will replace their posts. Mothers may feel like everyone is running, progressing, and rising, but they are falling behind. On the one hand, as the start date for work approaches, they feel both happy and sad because they will be separated from the baby. The problem of finding a caregiver begins. Generally, help is expected from grandmothers. If there is a neighbor at home who provides childcare at home in the neighborhood, the children are left at these nurseries. Grandmothers' old child-rearing practices, which are incorrect according to updated scientific information, can also be a cause for concern. *** When they return to work, for example, with calls from the caregiver between a very important meeting as it happened in one of the shows above, it is as if they are running an obstacle course compared to their colleagues. Leaving meetings early to pump milk for example. They cannot make the same effort as everyone who does not have a small baby! On the one hand, their spouses do not/ cannot provide adequate support in tasks related to the care of the baby due to careeroriented reasons; it makes you feel like this is unfair.

On the other hand, mothers who think that they always must put the baby first also experience an internal struggle of guilt for the desire for self-fulfillment. Parents groups where you can look at other mothers with small babies around you and compare yourself are also a must-have part of the process. Another point that spouses face when it comes to children is that although spouses from different religious beliefs and philosophies are in harmony while living together, they cannot agree when it comes to children. For example, it is inevitable to have a conflict with an elder family member who tries to put dates in the newborn baby's mouth, believing that it is sacred and will heal him, or, like in the Letdown, an atheist mother who does not want to have her child baptized will have a conflict with the father, who is a Catholic, even if he is not religious. *** Nowadays, especially among immigrant Turkish Americans, concerns about having children while pursuing a business career or academic life are intense. Couples trying to get back on their feet postpone it because of the pressure of the needs such as bringing a family member to America to support childcare, as it brings needs such as moving to a larger house. I observe that this is mostly due to reasons such as feeling that they are obliged to offer the best to their future children and that it would be unfair to the child if they cannot provide a sufficient "environment." This causes the age of motherhood to be older which is called geriatric pregnancy (literally) after age 35. Those who have gone through a difficult struggle in their education life in the US, especially in the fields of medicine, dentistry, and law, by taking exam after exam, have to agree with their spouses on the sharing of duties and the allocation of their careers. In other words, if the mother takes a break from work and school when the baby is born, the father will need to focus on the child by entering a period of lower volume in the next round. Meticulous attention to cleanliness, general housework, and baby care, which is also FEB 2024 | TURKNETWORK 63

is wealth. In Türkiye, aside from families who have a good income to raise their children with English-speaking tutors and nannies, some families also prefer schools that provide English education. However, for Turks in America, mastering the rich use of the native language is at least as important. Bilingual mothers have a choice to make, which has a huge impact on their children's capacity to learn and comprehend. And cultural hesitation is another concern for some regarding having children.

common among Americans of Turkish origin; turns out to be a full-time, even 24/7 job. Having help with daily tasks by hiring someone, even occasionally, is a luxury. For example, cleaners who come to clean the house and find it too messy may not give

you an appointment again. Or the standard of service provided may result in you doing twice as much work. Another issue is that children learn the use of Turkish as competently and with the correct accent as English. Because language

No matter what, choosing not to be a mother and choosing to be a mother are both people's own decisions and are equally worthy of respect. Of course, these difficult times pass somehow. The important thing is to know this and not be overly anxious. Understanding the sensitivity of motherhood and respecting her choice not to be a mother is equally extremely important in establishing healthy relationships. *** In the two series I mentioned, you can watch the struggles of mothers with different characters and choices, who come from different paths and whose lives intersect. You will also see that you are not alone in all difficult decisions, such as having a sibling to your baby or having a child at a later age, apart from motherhood and career. The trend of loneliness continues to increase in American society at an epidemic level. And while the feeling of loneliness in immigrant communities brings us closer to each other, we continue to work to offer the best to our children who enliven our simple lives. ■

Erickson, renowned for his expertise in modern Ottoman and Turkish history, brings a wealth of knowledge and insight to this work. His extensive curriculum vitae and the impressive array of his published works available on Amazon stand testament to his invaluable contributions to the field of military history.

Edward J Erickson ABC-CLIO, May 24, 2021 - History - 399 pages The dramatic story of the turbulent birth of modern Türkiye, which rose out of the ashes of the Ottoman Empire to fight off Allied occupiers, Greek invaders, and internal ethnic groups to proclaim a new republic under Mustafa Kemal (Atatürk). It is exceedingly rare to run across a significant historical event that has no comprehensive English-language history. Still, such was the case until The Turkish War of Independence brought together all the main strands of the story, including the chaotic ending of World War I in Asia Minor and the numerous military fronts on which the Turks defied odds, fighting off several armies to create their state from the defeated ashes of the Ottoman Empire. This important book culminates Erickson's three-part series on the early 20th-century military history of the Ottomans and Türkiye. Making wide use of specialized, hard-to-find Western and Turkish memoirs and military sources, it presents a narrative of the fighting, which eventually brought the Turkish Nationalist armies to victory. Often termed the "Greco-Turkish War," an incomplete description that misses its geographic and multinational scope, this war pitted Greek, Armenian, French, British, Italian, and insurgent forces against the Nationalists; the narrative shows these conflicts to have been distinct and separate to Türkiye's opponents, while the Turkish side saw them as an interconnected whole. This book completes a trilogy of books by Edward J Erickson on the conventional wars of the Ottoman and Turkish armies in the early 20th century, the first two of which are Defeat in Detail: The Ottoman Army in the Balkans, 1912–1913 (2003) and Ordered to Die: A History of the Ottoman Army in the First World War (2001). With no comprehensive English-language military history available, it fills a massive gap in our understanding of this important war and Türkiye's founding on the centenary of Türkiye's birth. This book also contains the first reconciliation of combatant estimates of military and civilian casualties in the Turkish War of Independence and analyzes the Turkish War of Independence as an early example of modern "hybrid-war" (combination of differing types of wars—in this case, simultaneously conventional, unconventional, counterinsurgency, and political-economicinformation warfare).

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION:

THE LIFELINE OF DIASPORA COMMUNITIES

Diaspora communities bridge worlds with the power of communication, nurturing their rich heritage while embracing new cultures and fostering global understanding.

By Suheyla Tayla

T

he term "communication" derives from the Latin word "communicare," meaning "to share, inform; unite." Communication is a fundamental aspect of human interaction, encompassing the exchange of information, ideas, and thoughts. It is vital for building and maintaining both personal and professional relationships, enabling us to express our feelings, share experiences, and connect with others. Effective communication is crucial in all life aspects as it helps reduce misunderstandings, improve productivity, and boost morale. In relationships, it involves not just talking, but also listening, understanding, and responding. It is a two-way street, where both parties actively engage, fostering trust and intimacy. In our globalized age, the concept of diaspora has gained significance. Diaspora communities, formed by individuals who have left their native countries, often maintain strong connections to their cultural roots while adapting to new environments. This dual identity presents unique opportunities and challenges in communication. Effective communication is crucial for diasporas, serving as a bridge between their country of origin and new home, and as a tool for preserving cultural identity and fostering community cohesion. For diaspora communities, communication is about preserving identity. Language, stories, music, and traditions are cultural heritage vessels, and transmitting them is vital to keep the homeland spirit alive. This

is especially important for second and thirdgeneration diaspora members, who may not have direct homeland experience. Language, as the archive of culture, encapsulates a community's history, values, and worldview. Therefore, teaching the native language to younger generations is emphasized through language schools, cultural classes, and community events. Effective communication within diaspora communities fosters belonging and solidarity. These communities often act as support networks for new immigrants and as social anchors. Through community centers, social gatherings, and online platforms, they share valuable information about life in the new country, from legal advice to employment opportunities. In crises, like the recent devastating earthquake in Türkiye, these communities unite, coordinating efforts and resources. The ability to communicate effectively—to organize, mobilize, and support—is crucial in these situations. Communication also plays a pivotal role in integrating diaspora communities into their new societies. It is a two-way process: diasporas expressing their cultural identity and host societies providing an inclusive environment. Language proficiency is key to integration, allowing diaspora members to participate fully in their new country's life. Diaspora communities often act as cultural ambassadors, promoting their heritage through festivals, art exhibitions, and cultural exchanges. These events celebrate diversity and foster mutual respect and understanding between different cultural groups.

However, effective communication in diaspora communities faces challenges, such as language barriers and the risk of misinformation, particularly on digital platforms. To overcome these, diaspora communities leverage technology, with online platforms and social media becoming vital for maintaining connections and celebrating cultural milestones. In conclusion, effective communication is diaspora communities' cornerstone, enabling cultural heritage preservation, community building, integration, and multicultural exchange. Though it faces complexities like emotional nuances, language barriers, and technological challenges, steps can be taken to overcome these and communicate more effectively. As the world grows more interconnected, the role of diaspora communities in bridging cultures and fostering global understanding becomes more significant. By harnessing communication's power, these communities not only maintain their cultural tapestries but also contribute to their host countries' cultural richness, creating a more diverse and inclusive world. ■ For 30 years, Suheyla Tayla was a senior political strategist at the US Embassy in Ankara, advising 10 ambassadors through significant regional events, including wars and political upheavals. emre, a town in Türkiye's Antalya province on the Mediterranean, holds a unique place in history as the hometown of Santa Claus. Surprisingly, in this region known for its ancient city of Patara, there are no reindeer. Patara, adjacent to Antalya, was a prosperous maritime and commercial city, once the capital of Lycia. Saint Nicholas, who lived from 270 to 343 AD, was an early Christian bishop during the Roman Empire. Known as "Nicholas the Wonderworker" because ofo the many miracles attributed to him, he eventually became the bishop of Myra, now modern-day Demre. of poor girls needing dowries, or leave gold coins in the shoes of the needy. A Lycian by birth, Nicholas, the only son of a wealthy family, dedicated his life to acts of kindness and became a world-renowned saint. Visitors can reach Demre and Patara via coaches and shared-minibuses from Antalya city center, with Patara also accessible from Dalaman International Airport. Demre is home to amazing historic sites, including the Saint Nicholas Church, now a museum built over his burial site. The church's importance is heightened by the fact that Venetian sailors removed bone fragments from his sarcophagus during the First Crusade. Also notable in Demre is an open-air theatre, the largest in Lycia, and the rock graves with unique facades on the cliffs.

Patara, the birthplace of St. Nicholas, was a significant city in Lycia, serving as its capital for some time. Its ruins, including a 5000-seat theatre and the "bouleuterion," or ancient parliament, reflect its storied past. Patara was a key city in the Lycian League, a democratic union in ancient times. This site is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrating its universal value and historical significance. The beach at Patara is part of the Patara National Park, famous for its sandy shores and as a nesting site for the endangered Caretta caretta sea turtles. This beach is protected for environmental reasons, including the Caretta caretta conservation program. The area is also a haven for various bird species, making it a popular spot for bird-watchers.

TURKISH HANDS “AL SANA EVRAK”; paralinguistic phenomenon! By Tara Alisbah

T

his is a story about Turkish hands. The hands that birthed me, the hands that held me after those that cared for me in my first months, and those of my son many years later. And all the gesturing hands that caught my attention so profoundly that I wrote a book about them. In the year "None of Your Business," on a day remembered as the great nursing strike at Çankaya hospital, many mothers-in-law and grandmothers were catching babies. And my dad, Hamdi Bilsel, was there. My mother did not have any family there. She was an American woman who had grown up in India, attended school in England, and been married to a Turkish man doing his military service

in Ankara before he was for sale. The doctor whose hands received me, so the story goes, was shocked at the places my mother had hair that she should not and was hesitant to touch her. {She used the word disgusted, but she was always one to embellish a story for effect, so we cannot be sure). Either way, I guess I am lucky he caught me with his disgusted face and quickly threw me into the hands of my Turkish father, whose look was probably a lot more loving. It was not a welcoming entrance to the planet, though unique, and it set a tone for the life to follow. Maybe I should add here that I was born a bastard. My officer dad was not supposed to have a foreign wife, so he did not, at least not in the paperwork. “Al, sana evrak," and that meant that when my mother went to register

me at the nüfus dairesi, she got the stink eye because there was no father and, well, you get it. At least that is how the story goes… I promised to tell you about my son’s hands. I was walking with a friend on the Bosphorus road near my preschool “Eden’s Garden” and marveling at how my son used his hands to express himself almost as much as he used words. “I wonder where he gets it,” I asked out loud. “Yeah, I wonder,” my friend said, looking pointedly at my hands floating mid-air and splayed open in the gesture of curiosity. And that is when it clicked. I spoke with my hands. I could not help it. I had probably explode or implode if you tried to stop me. And I had never noticed. I would noticed how uninteresting it was to watch most Americans talk, or Westerners for that matter since they appeared mostly

dead from the waist up, and how much more captivating it was to speak to people who used their whole body to communicate, but I had not noticed myself. Geez, what a pleasure it must be to watch me talk. Lucky people! And that is where the story of me becoming the world’s first and only Turkish hand gestures expert begins. Now, on to all the hands of all the Turks I mentioned before. You cannot have failed to notice (I mean, I am trying to be polite, but of course, you probably did not notice since I am the only one who made a book about it) that Turks have a hand language. Think of the gesture: “yok, kalmadi.” Okay, that is more of an eyebrow lift and a tongue click, but there is a hand gesture that goes with it. Or the “dos doğru git, hiç bir yere sapmadan” karate chop. Still do not believe me? Then take, for example, the thumb under the teeth of “Ödüm patladı,” or the threatening hand of “Bir tane çarparım,” or the crumb-wiping motion of “Bitti.” It is a language unto itself because it carries meaning independent of words, is mutually intelligible, and is much easier to understand than sentences, especially across a crowded room: “ben yavaş yavaş sivişiyorum.” This paralinguistic phenomenon is rich—I have collected and documented over 150 independently meaningful gestures. I challenge you to start noticing your own hands. What does it look like when you are choosing cheese at the store? Or fish. And now, challenge yourself to stop noticing hands. It will not be possible. Indians, Egyptians, Italians. Multiple hand language cultures exist, but the Turks are especially creative. I have had people make up new gestures in the course of a conversation. It is a language of bodies and energy, almost like having a superpower—the ability to communicate on multiple levels simultaneously. Use it well, my friends! ■ Tara Alisbah www.taraalisbah.com Mother of Eden, Turkish Language and Culture Expert, Eden’s Garden International Pre-School Founder and Director, Linguist, Medicine Woman, Writer, Author, Priestess and Guardian of Sacred Lands, Mermaid, Dragon Master, Sacred Disruptor, MA from Johns Hopkins SAIS, Middle East Expert, World Bank Faith and Development Dialogue consultant, Magnetizer.

A TASTE OF TURKISH CUISINE

QUINCE COMPOTE AYVA KOMPOSTOSU By Sheilah Kaufman

Quinces turn a delightful pink when cooked, releasing a wonderful aroma that brings comfort and warmth to any kitchen.

Q

uinces resemble pears in appearance and have a somewhat pineapple-like fragrance. Autumn is the season for quinces. Store them separately from other fruits until they become soft, juicy, and release their delightful aroma. The fruit turns pink when cooked. In Türkiye, when someone is feeling unwell or has an upset stomach, instead of opting for something light like Jell-O, a mother typically prepares this compote. Ingredients 3 large quinces, peeled and thinly sliced ● 2/3 cup of sugar ●

Instructions ● Place 3 cups of water and the sliced

quinces into a 3-quart pot. Heat until it reaches a boil, then reduce to a simmer, cover, and cook for 30 minutes.

Add the sugar, stir well, cover, and continue to cook for an additional 15 minutes or until the quinces are tender.

Transfer the quinces and cooking liquid into a serving bowl and let it chill before serving. ■ Serves 4 to 6

BUSINESS PROFILE

Turkish Philanthropy Funds A story of a community of philanthropists with one message: EVERYONE CAN BE A PHILANTHROPIST OUR STORY Turkish Philanthropy Funds is the story of a small circle of donors growing into a 100,000+ donor community precisely because of each donor’s passion for giving back and belief in the impact of community philanthropy. Today, we are proud to be the leading Turkish-American community foundation for high impact social investments. Our story began in 2007 when a handful of visionaries united as a small but determined eam and established Turkish Philanthropy Funds to bring our community together for impactful and effective philanthropy. In the past two decades, we have become a connector between donors and partners working to bring us safe, strong, and vibrant communities. Our legacy builds on each donor’s story. OUR VALUES We Deliver High Impact Philanthropy - We listen and connect people to exchange ideas and explore perspectives that can change the conversation, change minds and achieve high impact philanthropy for community good. We Pride Ourselves with Traceable Accountability - Our donor services and grantmaking are high-touch and highly tailored to enable communities to reach their fullest potential. We are committed to showing how every donation is used and holding our partner organizations on the ground to the same high standards. We Promote a Culture of Collaboration - We engage our community by delivering the utmost value to our donors and partners, fostering a culture of collaboration among institutions, individuals, and families, and sustainable and impactful philanthropy. We Power Charge Your Legacy - We work toward building a better future and a legacy of giving for donors individually and for the Turkish-American community. WHO WE ARE TPF works with donors to create customized giving models and connects everyday philanthropists with nonprofits. 17 years ago, TPF founders brought together a group of

Turkish-American donors dedicated to an ideal: a community fund that helps each donor to create a sustainable, lasting impact. Ever since, donors have engaged with TPF in many different ways — to create funds designed to give in perpetuity or to streamline annual giving, to involve their children in giving, to create a legacy for their families or to support TPF partners. The inspiration has been the same since day one for every donor: Being a catalyst for change to improve the quality of life for all in our communities. We build capacity by nurturing Türkiye’s civil society sector. We expand philanthropic capital by establishing and growing donor funds. We align social action by connecting stakeholders around issues. And we use grantmaking to empower communities to achieve their goals. Our power comes from our donors - more than 100,000 strong now who believe in philanthropy and coming together to make a difference. WHY WE ARE UNIQUE TPF provides a platform to donors who want to alter the current dichotomy in our society to facilitate enduring impact. We keenly understand our communities’ diverse people, needs, and assets. Each TPF donor believes in giving something back to the communities where they grew up, attended school, raised their children, and built their businesses. To that end, our deep local knowledge and connections, combined with the professional expertise, provide donors with unique, unmatched personal guidance. We are dedicated to turning empathy and words into action. We convene on the tough questions. We support and invest in those seeking solutions. We work with our donors to address our communities’ unique needs under a common goal: making our communities better for all of us and creating a legacy that would positively impact generations to come. WHAT WE DO Individual acts of generosity and organizations acting for the public good are connected through TPF and given tools to grow and become more effective. As the networks of generous individuals and effective communities grow, we create social impact at scale and create a giving legacy for our community.
