UNLOCKING THE DOOR TO SUCCESS: EXPLORING THE HOME SERVICES FRANCHISE INDUSTRY

The home services franchise industry caters to evolving homeowner needs with technology and convenience.

In recent years, the home services franchise industry has seen remarkable growth and evolution, driven by changing consumer lifestyles, technological advancements, and a growing demand for convenience and efficiency. Home services franchises offer a broad range of solutions to meet the needs of homeowners across the country, from cleaning and maintenance to renovation and repair. This article explores the home services franchise industry, examining key trends and opportunities, and ranks some of the top brands in the industry.

THE HOME SERVICES FRANCHISE LANDSCAPE

The home services franchise industry comprises a diverse array of businesses catering to various homeowner needs. From routine maintenance tasks like cleaning and lawn care to specialized services such as plumbing, HVAC, and remodeling, home services franchises play a crucial role in helping homeowners maintain, repair, and improve their properties.

One of the primary growth drivers in the home services franchise industry is the increasing complexity and specialization of home maintenance and improvement tasks. As homes become more technologically advanced and homeowners'

lives become busier, there is a growing demand for professional services to manage tasks traditionally considered DIY projects.

Furthermore, the rise of the gig economy and on-demand service platforms has created new opportunities for home services franchises to reach customers and streamline service delivery. Mobile apps, online booking platforms, and digital marketing tools have simplified the process for franchisees to connect with customers, manage operations, and drive growth.

KEY TRENDS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Several key trends are shaping the future of the home services franchise industry,

Unlocking entrepreneurial success through the booming home services franchise market.

presenting new opportunities for growth and innovation:

1. Technology Integration: Home services franchises are increasingly using technology to enhance service delivery, improve efficiency, and provide a seamless customer experience. From automated scheduling and route optimization to smart home integration and remote monitoring, technology is revolutionizing how home services are delivered.

2. Specialization and Niche Markets: There is a trend towards niche market segmentation within the home services industry as homeowners seek out specialized services to meet their specific needs. Franchises focusing on niche markets such as eco-friendly cleaning, home organization, or smart home installation have the opportunity to differentiate themselves and attract a dedicated customer base.

3. Ease of Funding: One significant advantage of the home services franchise model is the opportunity to finance the business compared to brick-and-mortar franchise businesses, which have much higher initial investments. Home service models can usually be started with a low enough amount of capital that they could be funded with cash or an unsecured line of credit, opening up doors for franchise buyers who traditionally couldn't afford to start their own business.

4. Health and Safety Concerns: In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, health and safety concerns have become a top priority for homeowners. Home services franchises that prioritize safety protocols, adhere to industry standards, and offer contactless service options are wellpositioned to gain the trust and confidence of customers. Additionally, from a franchise standpoint, not having an "indoor" business lowers the potential risk of having to shut down should another pandemic arise, making the investment in a home services franchise more appealing than traditional brick-and-mortar franchises.

5. Green Initiatives and Sustainability: With increasing awareness of environmental issues, there is a growing demand for eco-friendly home services solutions. Franchises that embrace sustainable practices, use environmentally friendly products, and offer energyefficient solutions can appeal to environmentally conscious consumers and differentiate themselves in the market.

RANKING THE BEST HOME SERVICES FRANCHISES

While many reputable home services franchises in the industry stand out for their brand reputation, customer satisfaction, franchisee support,

and growth potential, here are five of the best, ranked based on various factors:

1. Merry Maids: Known for its professionalism, reliability, and attention to detail, Merry Maids is a leading residential cleaning franchise with over 40 years of experience. It has built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality cleaning services and exceptional customer experiences. Franchisees benefit from comprehensive training, marketing support, and a proven business model.

AN INSIDER’S GUIDE TO SELECTING A WINNING FRANCHISE

Franchising offers a path to success, mitigating risk and shortening the learning curve for aspiring entrepreneurs.

So, you have decided you want to own a franchise. If you are like most people, this is an exciting and fear-provoking thought because you know business ownership is the ultimate path to freedom and control. Still, you have also heard horror stories about how hard owning a business is. Are you crazy for even thinking you could own your own business? Are you qualified to own a franchise? Do you need an MBA or prior experience to be one of the lucky ones to build and scale a multi-million-dollar empire? These questions and many more just like them are ones I receive daily from candidates who are reaching out to me with the dream of personal, professional, and financial freedom. So, no, you are not crazy for thinking about franchising. In this article, I want to pose thought-provoking questions to help you discern if you are ready to own a business, and ultimately, teach you how to select a

winning franchise that will allow you to go on and live the life of your dreams.

First things first, why do you want to be a business owner? I recommend journaling your answer and discussing it with your spouse. A business in the family changes everything, and you need spousal support. Additionally, a driving motivator will keep you pressing on when the going gets tough. Business ownership through the proven systems of a franchise will mitigate the startup risks, buy down your learning curve and statistically buy you success, so business ownership through franchising is easier than entrepreneurship, but it is not easy. You will have to surmount your learning curve and need grit, patience, perseverance, and support to endure successfully.

After you explore franchises, if you are like most people, you will think about franchises that would be fun to own, like businesses that involve something you are passionate about, something you know about, or franchises

that seem to trend now. While there is no wrong way to go about this, after twenty -three years of helping approximately 5000 people go down this path and helping nearly 1000 of them say YES! to their dream to own a business, I have never found investing in a hobby or something you have experience in or even investing in the latest trend to be the factor that leads to a winning outcome.

So, if you are not going to start by considering what you know or are passionate about, where do you begin?

What Is Your Goal?

I like to begin with the end in mind. A business is an investment of money and time, and a business should drive personal, professional, and financial outcomes above all else. So, how can you pick a business before you consider where you want the business to take you?

You may not have realized that this process would involve introspection and psychology, but think about it. If you invest in a business

14 FRANCHISE CONNECT | JAN-FEB 2024
Investing in a franchise is not just about following trends; it's about aligning with your long-term goals and vision.

because it is trending, and your goal is to build a legacy you can pass on to your kids, do those two strategies align? Maybe, but maybe not. If you want a business that will withstand changing economies and times, you must lean into something less trendy and more essential, like laundry or HVAC services, businesses that have longevity built into their very nature.

I recommend sitting down with your spouse and dreaming about the future life you aspire to project out 3, 5, 10 years. Consider your ages, your kids’ ages, and how you want to invest your time (or not) at different stages of your life. If these conversations lead you to think about traveling and not being tied down by a business, you could return to the trending franchise business idea because trending brands may build equity faster than essential services brands. When a brand achieves such national recognition that everyone wants one, no more locations are available. If you happen to own one, two, or three of the most established locations in the best part of town because you got in early, then you have an asset that can be sold for some multiple of your owner’s net benefit.

With your vision for how long you want to own this business, you can consider trending vs. essential options. Of course, no one can predict the future, but you can use a gut check to eliminate options that do not seem to align with your future goals.

If you are an adventurous investor who wants to be first to market, pioneering a new idea, market differentiator, or trending concept, and you are ready to ride the wave of the next big American brand, consider these trending industries:

• Health and Fitness

• Weight Loss

• Holistic Health (massage, cryotherapy, IV nutrition, infrared light, etc.)

• Anti-Aging (aesthetics, hormone replacement, etc.)

• Beauty (skin, lashes, brows, hair removal, spray tan)

• Pets (whole food, grooming, boarding, training)

• Kids (extracurricular, sports training)

If you are a conservative investor who believes that the riches are in the niches, dirty jobs, and boring businesses, these options may not be deemed glamourous, but they are defined as “sexy” for how essential and sustainable for the long-term they can be:

• Long-term and Short-Term Property Management

• Laundry

• Junk Removal

• Moving Services

• Mobile Storage

• Restoration Services

• Paint, Flooring, Windows, Roofs, Doors

• HVAC and Insulation Services

• Foundation and Concrete Services

• Landscaping, Outdoor Lighting, Irrigation, Fertilization, Fences

• Pest Control Services

• Residential and Commercial Cleaning

• Pool Maintenance and Services

• Senior Care Services

• Cost Cutting Services/Professional B2B Services

• Executive Recruiting and Temporary Staffing

How Much to Invest?

The second consideration in selecting a winning franchise is the most important. How much money can you comfortably afford to invest? The number one reason businesses fail is because people need more money before they make money. While this

BUSINESS STRATEGY

The right franchisor partnership can transform a business dream into reality, leveraging leadership and collaboration for success.

should not happen in a franchise because you can validate numbers with other operators, it still happens because people go in undercapitalized, they invest in businesses they cannot correctly afford, they need to follow the franchise system, and for many other reasons. Some franchise businesses require $50,000 investments; others require $250,000, $500,000, $1,000,000, and more.

How do you know if you have enough money?

The best approach to understanding a comfortable, safe level of investment is to work with an experienced franchise consultant, who can teach you what your money buys and align opportunities within your threshold, giving you a financial cushion.

The final point about having enough money is to consider if you plan to be a fulltime or semi-absentee owner. If you plan to be a full-time operator, you will need two piles of money: one to invest in the business and another to live on. If your spouse works, and you can live off one income, this would be ideal. I cannot stress enough that businesses do not typically have cash flow from day one, and in some cases, you may need to wait 6-12 months or longer before you can take any money out of the business. One of the most common pitfalls for

franchisees is needing to pull money out of the business to live on rather than being able to reinvest that money into growth. For example, say you want to start full-time to learn your business, but within 6-9 months, you want to replace yourself with a manager or salesperson. Well, if you are pulling profits out to live on, how will you afford the salary for this employee? Most businesses require an initial start-up but have other expenses necessary for growth. It benefits you not to need to make money from the business for as long as is possible, and even then, have more than you think you need. So, can you afford to be a full-time owner from day one, or do you need to be a semi-absentee? If you can be full-time, you will have many more options, but if you need to be semi-absent, the good news is you have eliminated a lot of options. It is hard to tell which franchisors will allow semi-absentee ownership if you don't work with an experienced franchise consultant. Do your due diligence as best as you can by asking this very important question from the outset. Why waste your time getting excited about an opportunity that is not feasible for you?

The third consideration to selecting a winning franchise involves three related but

different aspects of ownership: the owner you want to be, the employees you hire, and the environment you are in.

Work Environment

Let’s start with the environment. Do you want to be in a business-to-business or direct-to-consumer environment?

You may need to realize the plethora of opportunities that are B2B, as many of them are not big consumer brand names because they do not need to be. Their customers buy from people, you! Suppose you are leaning into the more professional environment of B2B. In that case, you may have a more traditional work week, and a home-based office, but you will need to be a full-time owner because B2B implies a sales organization. Since no one will sell with the owner's passion, you will need to spearhead this effort to be successful.

If you do not enjoy sales, you should consider B2C options where your customers will reach out to you as warm leads generated by your marketing efforts, referral sources, or your golden location. The B2C world includes both non-brick-and-mortar and brick-andmortar options.

As a side note, I do not mean to say that you do not have to sell in B2C businesses. Selling is what owning a business is all about. As the owner, you are either selling to your employees to show up and be the face of your company, or you are selling directly to your customers. Still, mastering sales and objections is the ultimate key to your success, no matter what franchise you own.

Once you consider B2B or B2C, you have narrowed your search field again. Using this criterion, you have also selected a MondayFriday or a six- or seven-day work week. Not all B2C businesses operate more than five days, but generally, if a professional work week is crucial to you, do not override this because you think the “hot chicken franchise” will make you more money. Your quality of life is a huge factor in selecting a winning

16 FRANCHISE CONNECT | JAN-FEB 2024

franchise. I would argue that you may never feel successful if you compromise on the quality of life you want for a specific brand, no matter how much money you make.

Your Employees

Now, consider who you are creating jobs for in your business. Some franchises require professionals, while others require trade skills or minimum wage skills. Who do you believe you will enjoy managing? Managing people will be a big part of what you do as you scale up your business and pull back your time, so consider who you will enjoy creating jobs for and managing. If you have never managed people, you may need to read some books on leadership, listen to podcasts, or take a course. Growing into the role of CEO of your life will require you to manage others, so give this topic some deep thought. Another consideration is if you prefer an industry that is more masculine or feminine dominated. Some industries like construction and landscaping will naturally skew to a more male-dominated labor force.

In contrast, others like a salon, day spa, or house cleaning business will skew more

feminine. I work with many men who have worked primarily with women in their W2 jobs who feel confident owning beauty brands. (They may also pay the credit card bills of their wives, girlfriends, and daughters and know of the recession-resistant, reoccurring revenue nature of the beauty industry!)

While we are thinking through the leader you want to be, consider if you could own a business where your employees have a special skill that you do not have. Would you feel at their mercy if they knew more about the job that was to be done than you did, or do you like surrounding yourself with people who are more intelligent than you? I have met candidates who said they could never own an automotive shop because they know nothing about cars. Still, I have also worked with candidates who loved having a professional team with a career orientation for their business. What kind of leader do you want to be, and who do you want to lead? There are thousands of options for all these qualifiers.

Selecting a Franchise Partner

With self-evaluation of future goals, what you can realistically invest in, who your ideal customer is, and the leader you want to be to your ideal employee, it is time to consider who you want to go into business with. Afterall, franchising is a partnership, and the number one reason to invest in a franchise is because you find people with a vision for building a brand that inspires you, a track record that comforts you, and a culture that empowers you. I tell my candidates to look up what the business does and focus on who is doing the business. Leadership grows brands and keeps them adapting to changing times, competition, and economies, so you must find people you believe in and want to be mentored by.

The final step in selecting a winning franchise will be the hardest to do without the help of an experienced franchise consultant. How do you know who and how to measure one

franchisor against another? You will have to kiss many frogs to gain perspective, and even then, I suspect, you may not trust in your due diligence simply because you do not know what you do not know. If you work with an experienced franchise consultant, you will leverage years of relationships and the wisdom that only time and experience can bring.

Selecting the right franchisor is a critical piece to your ultimate success. This should not be downplayed or bypassed for a business “you just have to own.” After all, unprecedented leadership adapted business models seemingly overnight to get or keep doors open during the pandemic. In a time when many entrepreneurs closed their doors forever, I sat back. I watched in awe at how decisive franchisor leadership and collaboration kept spirits high, customers coming in, and franchisees in business during one of the most challenging times of our lives.

This ultimate guide to selecting a winning franchise merely scratches the surface of all the essential factors that should play a role in your thought process. While I have attempted to break down some of the most essential criteria to think about, there is so much more that I would consider with you and for you if I were your experienced franchise consultant.

ELEVATING CUSTOMER SERVICE: 10 TIPS FOR SUCCESS

Exceptional customer service transforms first-time clients into lifelong advocates, elevating your brand above the competition.

In today's competitive market, exceptional customer service can set your business apart. Here are ten tips to elevate your customer service game:

Listen Actively: Make your customers feel heard by practicing active listening. This means fully concentrating on what is being said rather than passively hearing the message.

Respond Promptly: Speedy responses show customers they are valued. Aim to reply to inquiries and resolve issues as quickly as possible.

Personalize Your Service: Tailor your approach to meet individual customer needs. Personal touches can turn a one-time buyer into a lifelong patron.

Know Your Product: A deep understanding of your product or service can help solve problems more efficiently and provide valuable advice to customers.

Maintain a Positive Attitude: A positive demeanor can improve customer interactions significantly. Even in challenging situations, a friendly and optimistic approach goes a long way.

Ask for Feedback: Encourage customers to share their experiences. This not only shows you value their opinion but also helps you improve your service.

Use Clear Communication: Avoid jargon and be clear in your communication. Misunderstandings can lead to frustration, so clarity is key.

Train Your Team: Ensure your team is welltrained in both your product and customer service best practices. A knowledgeable team is the backbone of great service.

Embrace Complaints: View complaints as opportunities to improve. Addressing complaints effectively can turn a dissatisfied customer into a satisfied one.

Go the Extra Mile: Whenever possible, exceed expectations. Small gestures or going beyond what's expected can leave a lasting positive impression.

Implementing these tips can transform your customer service from good to great, fostering loyalty, and driving business success. Remember, in the realm of customer service, the little things can make the biggest difference. ◗

WHISPR: REVOLUTIONIZING LAWN CARE AND HOLIDAY LIGHTING THROUGH INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY

Lawncare never sounded so good.

Imagine a world where loud noises and noxious fumes from gas-powered lawn equipment didn't bombard you. Your lawn was also meticulously manicured by a hasslefree robot mower. It might seem like a fantasy to some, but an innovative company out of the Pacific Northwest is trying to make that our new reality.

Introducing WHISPR Innovations, an ecofriendly business ready to grow across America with its brand-new franchise opportunity. They've pioneered their Robots as a Service (RaaS) program that compliments their other battery-powered lawn care services. Besides robots, they offer a holiday lighting service that brightens people’s lives while bringing the company revenue and work in their off-season.

WHISPR emerges as a beacon of innovation, sustainability, and franchise opportunity in the heart of the ever-evolving home services

industry. Founded by the visionary duo Derek Kaye and Ethan Hansen and propelled by the strategic marketing insights of Jesse Stoddard, fractional chief marketing officer and founder of the Stoddard Agency, it's not just a company—it's a movement towards a greener, quieter, and more efficient future.

I asked Derek Kaye, the co-founder and CEO, what inspired them to become pioneers

in this industry. He said, “Discovering that 5% of US air pollution came from gas-powered lawn equipment was a lightbulb moment; I knew we needed to be electric.” He added, “Replacing traditional gas-powered lawn care equipment with electric seemed like lowhanging fruit. The tools are here today.”

WHISPR stands out in the home services industry by adhering to three foundational

principles that underscore its commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship:

• Zero Emissions Lawn Service: By harnessing the power of battery-electric equipment and operating a fully electric fleet, WHISPR presents an eco-conscious alternative to conventional lawn care. The ongoing maintenance and operational costs of battery-electric technology are markedly lower than those of traditional gas-powered equipment. Their batteryelectric fleet encompasses not only their machines and tools, but they also use electric vehicles.

• Innovative Technology: Leading the charge of the WHISPR service model is robotic mowing, a transformative solution in lawn maintenance that epitomizes efficiency, precision, and convenience. This technology streamlines the lawn care process, offering a hands-off approach while also saving clients time and resources. It further enhances WHISPR 's eco-friendly mission by reducing labor and overhead costs for future franchise owners. Utilizing robots has allowed their business to scale in a challenging labor market.

• Holiday Lighting Reimagined: WHISPR utilizes a unique system that creates topnotch designs while prioritizing safety and energy efficiency. The company's leasing and installation services provide clients with captivating light displays while delivering a friendly and dependable service. Their Lights as a Service (LaaS) model ensures a festive ambiance without the added cost or hassle of installing and storing decorations.

WHISPR is positioned at the intersection of technology, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. With the visionary leadership of Derek Kaye and Ethan Hansen, the strategic marketing prowess of Jesse Stoddard, and a

business model built for the future, they are redefining what it means to be a franchise in the home services industry. For those looking to make a mark in franchising, they offer an unparalleled opportunity to own a profitable and purpose-driven business.

Co-founder and Chief Operations Officer Ethan Hansen wrapped it up like this, “We learned early on that people who appreciate hiring out for their lawn care and landscape services didn’t just want a robot mower. They want everything automated for them. A robot by itself can be intimidating. So, WHISPR takes away their concerns and gives them peace of mind with our full-service maintenance program. We are excited to grow our business across the country and have a positive impact on business owners as well

as the environment.”

NAVIGATING YOUR FINANCIAL JOURNEY AS A NEW FRANCHISEE:

A WARM GUIDE TO PREPARING YOUR BOOKS AND UNDERSTANDING CASH FLOW

Your accounting system is like the foundation for a house—everything else builds upon it.

Welcome, aspiring franchisees, to the threshold of an exhilarating adventure in business ownership! As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with 20+ years of experience guiding entrepreneurs like you, I'm here to offer a friendly hand as you prepare to open the doors of your new franchise. Understanding and managing your finances from the get-go is crucial, and that's when preparing your books and grasping the essence of cash flow come into play.

LAYING THE FOUNDATION:

SETTING UP YOUR BOOKS

Before opening the door, setting up your accounting system is like laying the foundation for a house. Everything else will build upon it, ensuring stability and clarity in your financial journey.

1. Choose Your Accounting Software: Begin by selecting an accounting software. Whether it's QuickBooks, Xero, or another reputable platform, look for user-friendly, scalable options that offer robust reporting capabilities. Select an option that provides online access for both you and your CPA. This will save you time and fees as you begin to auto-classify receipts from commonly purchased items for bookkeeping. Additionally, an online/cloud-based tool allows you access at any time to manage expenses and cash flow better.

2. Set Up Your Chart of Accounts: A franchisor often has a recommended chart of accounts for you to use. Using their chart of accounts saves you time and allows your field consultant to compare your spending, profit, and financial metrics to the system norms, thus providing critical feedback to fine-tune performance. Think of the chart of accounts as the backbone of your monetary

system. It categorizes all your transactions into assets, liabilities, equity, revenue, and expenses. Your chart of accounts will ensure that you track critical areas like sales, inventory, payroll, and franchise fees.

3. Implement a Receipt and Document Management System: Keeping track of receipts and financial documents is crucial for accurate bookkeeping. Plus, you will need these items for future reference, especially during tax season. Utilize digital tools to store and organize these documents efficiently. Franchisors may have recommendations of which documents to keep and tools that effectively store those documents. Other franchisees may have systems that they will share with you that make this record-keeping simple for them. A key employee may also have a role in documenting key performance indicators from these documents and properly storing them.

ACCOUNTING

Cash flow is the lifeblood of your business for profitability, liquidity, and the ability to cover obligations and seize opportunities.

4. Establish Bookkeeping Routines: Consistency is vital in bookkeeping. Not keeping your books up to date leaves you flying blind in making critical business decisions about purchases and knowing what areas need improvement to achieve your goals. Set regular intervals (daily, weekly, or monthly) to update your books, reconcile bank statements, and review financial reports. The more frequent the interval, the less burdensome the task.

UNDERSTANDING AND MANAGING CASH FLOW

Cash flow—the lifeblood of your business— refers to the movement of money in and out of your franchise. It's not just about profitability; it's about liquidity and your ability to cover obligations and seize opportunities.

1. Project Your Cash Flow: Create a cash flow projection for at least the first year before opening. Estimate your initial costs, ongoing expenses, and anticipated revenue. Item 19 from the franchise disclosure document, franchisor guidance, and input from fellow franchisees will help with the planning. A conservative estimation will serve you best in planning for surprises and bumps along the way.

2. Monitor Cash Flow Regularly: Like bookkeeping, monitor your cash flow regularly to manage fluctuations and anticipate future needs. Tools within your accounting software can automate much of this monitoring, providing real-time insights.

3. Manage Receivables and Payables Strategically: Speed up cash inflows by setting clear payment terms for customers and consider incentives for early payments. Conversely, manage your payables to maintain good supplier relations while optimizing your cash outflow timing.

4. Establish a Cash Reserve: Building a cash reserve can provide a buffer against

unforeseen challenges. Aim to set aside a portion of your initial capital or profits until you have a safety net covering several months of operating expenses.

PREPARING FOR THE GRAND OPENING AND BEYOND

As you gear up for the grand opening, integrating your financial preparations with other aspects of your business plan is essential. Consider these additional steps to ensure you're on solid financial ground:

1. Review Franchise Agreements and Obligations: Understand your financial obligations under the franchise agreement, including royalties, marketing fees, and any required purchasing agreements. Incorporate these into your financial planning and bookkeeping system.

2. Set Up Business Banking and Credit: Establish a business bank account and consider a business credit line for additional financial flexibility. Keeping personal and business finances separate is crucial for accurate bookkeeping and legal protection.

3. Develop a Budget: Create a detailed budget from initial setup costs to ongoing operational expenses. Regularly compare actual results against your budget to identify variances and adjust your strategies accordingly.

4. Seek Professional Advice: Not an accountant or financial person? Hire to your weaknesses! Consult with financial professionals, especially those experienced in franchising. They can offer personalized advice, help you navigate complex financial landscapes, and set up your accounting systems.

EMBRACING YOUR FINANCIAL ROLE WITH CONFIDENCE

Remember, this journey is not just about numbers; it's about realizing your entrepreneurial dreams with confidence and clarity. Approach your finances with a sense of curiosity and empowerment. Every step in understanding and managing your finances brings you closer to your goals.

If you are not an expert in the accounting area, then hire one. Find a reputable CPA who has experience working with franchisees. This person will understand your books and your relationship with the franchisor and other franchisees. ◗

2024 GUIDE TO THRIVING FRANCHISE INDUSTRIES:

The "Steady Eddies" of Business

Turn your dream of stable, long-term growth into reality.

Despite the ever-changing business landscape, certain industries stand out for their stability and resilience.

I like to refer to these as "Steady Eddies"—sectors that have not only stood the test of time but continue to demonstrate significant growth potential. In 2024, as we navigate a post-Covid era, it's clear that the trends emerging from the pandemic are stabilizing. We're returning to a semblance of normal life, and the Steady Eddies of pre-Covid times remain as robust and stable as ever.

If you're contemplating business ownership in 2024, venturing into the following steady franchise industries is a promising choice.

HOME SERVICES

Amid fluctuating real estate markets, soaring home prices, and rising interest rates, individuals are choosing to invest in their current homes. Home service franchises, focusing on small projects and ongoing maintenance, are flourishing. From painting and flooring to cleaning and pest control, these services are in high demand as homeowners prioritize convenience and upkeep.

SERVICES FOR THE AGING

With the Baby Boomer generation aging, services catering to this demographic are increasingly critical. Franchises offering assistance with daily tasks, home modifications, and companionship are crucial for those preferring to age in place. Solutions that enable the elderly to stay close to

their families, like exterior home suites, are invaluable in any economy.

BUSINESS TO BUSINESS (B2B)

For entrepreneurs with B2B experience, this sector offers lucrative opportunities. B2B franchises, known for their potential for scalable growth and high return on investment from national accounts, are a strong option for those aiming for substantial long-term returns.

MEN’S GROOMING

The men's grooming industry remains steadfast, with a growing demand for unique and personalized grooming experiences. Establishments offering a "man cave" atmosphere for haircuts and self-care continue to thrive.

PET INDUSTRY

The pet industry continues to boom, driven by owners willing to invest in high-quality services for their pets. From grooming to daycare, businesses catering to pets are thriving thanks to the strong emotional bond between owners and their pets.

Investing in Steady Eddies means betting on industries that not only withstand the test of time but also promise growth and resilience in a post-Covid world.

EXPERIENCES OVER THINGS

The preference for meaningful experiences over material possessions remains strong. Businesses that provide unique experiences, such as art classes, guided tours, and culinary adventures, continue to attract investment.

RESTORATION

Recession-resistant and indispensable, restoration franchises play a vital role in community well-being. Whether addressing disaster aftermath or ensuring cleanliness, these services are always in demand.

BUSINESS COACHING

The need for business coaching is everlasting, with entrepreneurs seeking guidance to navigate the complexities of the business world. Coaches offering personalized insights enable sustained success in a competitive marketplace.

While these Steady Eddies may not be the most glamorous or trendy, they offer exciting opportunities for franchisees seeking stability and long-term growth. 2024: THE GOLDEN ERA OF HOME SERVICES FRANCHISES

Home services franchises are not just businesses; they're lifelines to convenience, professional care, and quality in the ever-demanding consumer world.

In an era when convenience is king and consumer demands are ever evolving, home services franchises have emerged as a viable and lucrative investment opportunity. From home cleaning and repair to senior care and pet services, these businesses are capitalizing on the growing need for professional, reliable, and high-quality home-based services.

The Appeal of Home Services Franchises

Home services franchises offer services often deemed necessary by homeowners, making them resilient even in economic downturns. Consumers today increasingly outsource tasks they lack the time, skill, or

30 FRANCHISE CONNECT | JAN-FEB 2024

desire to do themselves, thereby driving demand for home services.

Moreover, the franchise model provides a roadmap for success. It offers a proven business system, brand recognition, marketing support, and ongoing training –elements that can significantly reduce the risks of starting a business from scratch.

Market Trends Driving Growth

Several market trends are fueling the growth of home services franchises. Demographic shifts, such as the aging population in many developed countries, drive demand for in-home senior care services. According to the World Health Organization, the number of people aged 60 or older will rise to 2 billion by 2050. Another trend is the increasing number of dual-income households, which leaves less time for home maintenance tasks, thus driving demand for cleaning, landscaping, and handyman services. Furthermore, as pet ownership continues to rise, so does the need for pet-related services such as grooming, walking, and training.

The advent of technology has also played a significant role in this sector. Many home services franchises have adopted digital platforms and apps to simplify service scheduling and payment, enhancing customer experience and operational efficiency.

Profitability and Return on Investment

The profitability of a home services franchise is more than just a one-size-fits-all scenario. Several variables, including the franchise location, the competency of management, and the existing market demand for the services offered, influence it. However, the potential to reap substantial returns is undeniably present in this sector.

Data underscores the lucrative nature of these franchises. In 2020, some top-performing home service franchises reported average gross annual sales surpassing $1 million. This figure illustrates the substantial financial possibilities that can be unlocked through strategic planning and execution in this thriving industry.

Challenges and Considerations

Like any business venture, investing in a home services franchise involves challenges. These may include managing customer expectations, recruiting and retaining skilled workers, and navigating local regulations and licensing requirements. Prospective franchisees should conduct thorough due diligence before investing. This includes evaluating the franchise's financial performance, understanding the obligations under the franchise agreement, and speaking with existing franchisees about their experiences.

In the landscape of dualincome households and aging populations, the demand for home services franchises skyrockets, offering unparalleled growth opportunities for entrepreneurs.

The Future of Home Services Franchises

The future of home services franchises looks promising. As consumer expectations evolve, franchises will have ample opportunities to innovate and expand their service offerings. For instance, with the rising focus on sustainability, franchises offering green cleaning solutions or energy-efficient home improvements will likely gain traction.

As technology advances, franchises that leverage data analytics, artificial intelligence, and other digital tools to enhance service delivery and customer experience will have a competitive edge.

Home services franchises provide a lucrative investment opportunity, buoyed by favorable market trends and the inherent advantages of the franchise model. However, any business venture requires careful planning, research, and management to ensure success. A home services franchise can provide a rewarding and profitable entrepreneurial journey with the right approach. ◗

HOME SERVICES WHO NEEDS THEM?

THE ANSWER: MOST OF US

Peace of mind often outweighs whatever cost saving might have been anticipated.

START SMART

Numerous factors influence this market, as observed from my insider perspective as a recruiter within this industry. I have dedicated many years to working with home services franchises, aiding their growth by finding the best candidates for their roles. Franchisees and end-users/customers increasingly demand higher levels of service and professionalism.

What is driving the demand? Here are my insights:

As technology progresses, once commonplace home repairs have become more complex and involved. No one should risk performing their own electrical or plumbing work when an error could lead to catastrophic consequences, possibly not covered by insurance if not completed by professionals.

NO ONE SHOULD RISK PERFORMING THEIR OWN ELECTRICAL OR PLUMBING WORK WHEN AN ERROR COULD LEAD TO CATASTROPHIC CONSEQUENCES.

Then, consider the risk factors. For the amateur, cleaning gutters or washing second-story windows on a ladder could result in serious injury. Who can afford to take a month or two off work to recover from a fall?

Peace of mind is another significant factor. Both partners can rest easier knowing the job has been well done, often making the potential cost savings irrelevant.

Average house prices have more than doubled in the last decade (with an even higher ratio in Canada), requiring dual incomes to cover all housing and general living expenses. The "I can do it myself" generation is yielding to those who prefer to "get a professional to do it, as I don't have the time."

In Toronto, Canada, where the average house price exceeds $1 million, the average

individual lacks the experience or resources to manage a property of this value. Neglecting proper maintenance or performing it poorly can significantly decrease the property's value.

Many of us remember a time when we would work on our cars for many standard repair and replacement tasks. However, looking under the hood of a car today, one might need a degree in engineering and computers to start a DIY project.

Another driver of this market is word of mouth. If a neighbor experiences a problem and inquires about how you've had a similar issue and how you resolved it, they

are likely to contact the company you recommend first.

Therefore, I advise making a reasonable budget for this type of work and entrusting the results to professionals. ◗

UNVEILING THE HIDDEN GEM OF FRANCHISING: SERVICE-BASED BUSINESSES!

The smart, low-cost path to high margins and economic resilience for entrepreneurs.

When beginning their journey into business ownership, most potential franchise owners start by investigating food franchises. They believe they should buy into something they use or like. They think to themselves, "I like donuts; maybe I should own a Dunkin." In most cases, that thought is a faulty one. They need to consider the costs and time involved in opening and operating a brickand-mortar franchise and realize that there may be a better fit for them as a first-time business owner. A concept with a low startup cost, quicker time to profits, fewer staff, higher margins, and much easier operations might be the hidden gem they are searching for in the mountain of franchises available in America. The service-based concepts may be that gem.

Service companies are typically easier to operate and have a better return on investment than retail concepts. Service industry franchises usually do not have stores that dot the landscape, so they are not at the top of an inexperienced buyer's mind. I say this because I, too, started my franchise journey looking at brick-and-mortar food franchises 25 years ago. However, luckily, I found an experienced franchise consultant who opened my eyes to a whole new world of home services concepts. They were better suited to my situation, investment level, and risk tolerance.

Home service franchise concepts span hundreds of different categories. Just look around the room you’re sitting in as you read this; almost everything you can see has a franchise ready to install, repair, clean, or maintain it. To open one of these franchises is a fraction of what a retail store

costs. They have fewer moving parts and, in some cases, can earn more than a brick-andmortar location. Home service franchises sometimes operate out of a home office and have limited utilities to pay for, which makes them more profitable by default. Additionally, some service businesses are recessionresilient. Companies that do flood cleanup from broken pipes or clean out clogged pipes have proved profitable regardless of what is happening in the economy.

The downside is that service is not as sexy as retail. Imagine you’re at a cocktail party, and someone asks what business you’re in. If status is not an issue, and you’re ok with saying that you own a janitorial services franchise, you know that "unsexy" in business is spelled P-R-O-F-I-T-S.

A home services franchise provides a wide range of services to enhance residential properties' comfort, safety, and functionality.

EXPERT ADVICE

In franchising, "unsexy" equals profits: Discover the financial efficiency of service-based businesses.

Some common examples of home services provided by these franchises include:

Home Cleaning Services: These franchises offer professional services such as regular house cleaning, deep cleaning, move-in/ move-out cleaning, and specialized cleaning services for specific areas such as carpets, windows, upholstery, and even hazard cleanup.

Home Repair and Maintenance Services: Many concepts help with homeowners' issues. This includes plumbing, HVAC maintenance, roofing, flooring, painting, fencing, driveway, garage door, appliance, and general handyman services.

Landscaping and Lawn Care Services: This category specializes in outdoor maintenance services such as lawn mowing, landscaping design and installation, garden maintenance, outdoor lighting, irrigation system installation and repair, tree trimming, and snow removal.

Pest Control Services: These franchises sometimes offer a built-in repeat business through ongoing maintenance plans. These concepts help homeowners deal with common pests like insects, rodents, termites, and wildlife. Services may consist of pest inspection, extermination, and prevention.

Home Renovation and Remodeling Services: Some home services franchises specialize in renovation and remodeling projects, helping homeowners transform and update their living spaces. This can include flooring of all types, kitchen and bathroom remodeling, basement finishing, room additions, and interior/exterior renovation projects. Some concepts provide an in-home shopping experience for dual-income families who don’t have time to do it themselves.

Senior Care Services: Some home services franchises cater specifically to the needs of seniors and individuals with disabilities, offering in-home care services such as personal care assistance, companionship, meal preparation, medication reminders, and transportation assistance.

Childcare Services: Great concepts for children run from in-home tutoring to off-site

sports training and swimming lessons.

Pet Care Services: Next time Fido needs grooming, consider a mobile dog grooming and nail trimming service. A climate-controlled van parks and performs the services in your driveway. Some concepts offer groomer training, so as an owner, you not only provide jobs to people but also offer them a career.

ADVERTISING AND MARKETING

Home services franchisors often provide marketing and advertising support to help franchisees attract and retain customers. This may include national or regional advertising campaigns, promotional materials, and digital marketing assistance.

In addition, the franchise company often oversees search engine optimization for their franchised units. Homeowners may do an Internet search to find a local handyman service or in-home window treatment company. The parent company wants to be sure your franchise office appears on the first page of the search results. The franchisor also helps deeply with outbound digital marketing. And today, it’s easier than ever. For example, if you own a dog grooming franchise, sending ads to a home with no dogs wastes your money. Because of technology, which is tied to marketing data and demographics, the franchise company has the information to market only to homes likely to have a dog that requires grooming. Today, owning and operating a franchise is easier and more cost-effective

than at any other time in history.

Home services franchises cater to the growing demand for professional services that help homeowners maintain, improve, and enhance their living environments. For the new franchise owner, the parent company may offer quick start programs that get cash flow to the new owner very quickly. In addition, many of the concepts involve cutting-edge technology, such as customer-facing apps to let the customer know about the service employee’s arrival time, complete with a map to show the staff member’s route to your home, in addition to the background of the staff member and maybe his or her favorite sub sandwich and their dog’s name. It’s very personalized.

If you are considering investing in a great business, don’t become infatuated with one concept. Keep an open mind. Look at home service and allow yourself to start and operate your own business with the support and resources of an established brand without many of the headaches you may find in retail. ◗

EL NIÑO IMPACTS THE HOME SERVICES INDUSTRY – WITH A POSITIVE EFFECT

From devastation to renovation, the right franchise can turn a storm's aftermath into a foundation for success.

As we reported last year, the home services industry has grown by over 50% and continues to do so. A significant sector of home services—home restoration services—has benefited from the impact of El Niño. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported on November 28th that the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season experienced above-normal activity. This season was characterized by record-warm Atlantic sea surface temperatures and a strong El Niño, resulting in 20 named storms, ranking it fourth for the most named storms in a year since 1950.

In addition to being one of the top five years for the most named storms, 2023 also brought some of the most devastating

storms the United States has seen. Idalia was the strongest hurricane to hit the Big Bend region of Florida in over 125 years.

Although last year's twenty named storms made the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season the fourth most active on record, the extended forecast by TropicalStormRisk.com indicates that the 2024 hurricane season could be just as active, if not more so.

Many homeowners have described feelings of total despair and helplessness when their homes were destroyed or damaged by a storm.

Newcomer Martindale Pinnacle Construction (MPC) franchise system has experience with

these storms. Their unique Storm Certified Training teaches their franchisees all the additional knowledge they need to handle and assist communities impacted by horrific storms. Whether facing a hurricane, tornadoes, lightning storms, or flooding, MPC's storm teams arrive to assist communities. They specialize in dealing with insurance companies and offer homeowners peace of mind, helping them get their lives back on track.

Another recent franchise system to offer its long-standing successful business model to franchisees is Quick Floor Removal Systems. Born from a sister international company specializing in renovation and insurance

With many different franchise systems in this vertical, whether it's a brand-new rising franchise system or one that has over 1200 franchises across the globe, it's crucial to conduct due diligence on how a specific brand aligns with your franchise business goals. Unsure how to do that? We've published a book titled Your Journey to Franchise Ownership that outlines the exact steps for conducting this research. ◗

Lynne D. Shelton was the chief operating officer of a large franchise system and is currently the Senior Attorney for Shelton Law & Associates (SLA) franchise law firm, as well as a franchisor owner in an international franchise system, and is currently the CEO of an international nonprofit company specializing in training entrepreneurship to young adults.

SLA attorneys have 50+ years’ business consulting, franchise, and trademark experience. Their knowledge facilitates an understanding of a large variety of businesses, services, site selection, and technologies. They help businesses protect their brands through trademark, copyright, and business contractual transactions. These services allow SLA to “Expand their Brand®” through franchising. For franchisors, SLA provides full outsourced in-house counsel services for a flat monthly fee.

SLA additionally works with entrepreneurs buying franchises by assisting with business creation, industry evaluations, franchise disclosure document review, fairness factors, site selection, opinion letters, and negotiations.

The Premier Healthcare Staffing Solutions Provider for Nearly 40 Years!

Founded in 1985 by Brothers David And Stephen Savitsky as a small, but nimble Healthcare Staffing Company operating “Around The Clock” in Queens, New York.

In the decades that followed, ATC Healthcare Services grew to become a leader in healthcare staffing and healthcare franchising. ATC brings its high-quality staffing system to 60+ territories from coast to coast. Today, David and Stephen continue their mission to connect healthcare professionals throughout the field and turn caring entrepreneurs into healthcare franchise partners.

From the first day to today, through acquisitions and expansions, ATC has been focused entirely on ensuring that healthcare professionals have the highest-quality staffing solutions available. We’re proud to share that mission with our franchise partners around the U.S. Today, thousands of U.S. partners look to ATC as the partner of choice to solve staffing problems on demand, from hospitals and residential care programs, to large public health departments, public school systems, medical groups and municipal governments.

ATC’s franchisees have the ability to fulfill ANY medical staffing contract - whether it’s per diem, permanent placement, or travel – and they have the ability to place administrative personnel, nurses, or allied professionals (non nursing/physician). It truly is a one-stop shop for flexible healthcare staffing needs. The corporate office has also partnered with the major vendor management systems (VMS) and managed service programs (MSP) that the largest hospitals use nationwide. Franchisees are given access to these systems to find local opportunities to place their healthcare associates.

Our long and successful history of working with public facilities and government offices allows franchisees to service substantially larger contracts they would not be able to attain on their own. These types of entities rely on past performance when awarding new contracts. ATC has an impressive proven track record with them and hands their franchisees the contracts.

ATC does all of the invoicing and collections as well as fund the franchisee’s payroll for their healthcare workers 100% interest-free. There is no need for the franchisee to obtain a large line of credit to fund their healthcare professional pool’s payroll. ATC makes sure the healthcare professional is paid every week and sometimes daily.
