co-design is a tool. this project is aiming at facilitating collaboration, looking at individual’s thoughts and group discussions. It strives to teach it’s importance in given contexts, and looks at creating great ways of incentivating and keeping your spirit open and up for it. nobody says it’s easy. so spit it out, write it down and don’t give up. this project will do this by delivering suggestions and tools for you to follow in order to keep your mind working torwards a project. it will guide you through the design process and make you recap on all you’ve been listening. so that everyone’s ideas are taken on board, inlcuding your own. let’s see how this is going to take shape.
is it a tool, a machine, an appliance, an instrument, a utensil or a device?: ‘longmans dicticonary: ‘tools, machine, implement, instrument appliance, utencil, device and gadge all mean. piece of equipment for doing work’. a tool is typically small and hand-held, performas a physical task (e.g. culling, screaping, banging or moulding) and can be powered: a hammer is a tool but so is an electric drill. a machine is typically lrger and more elaborate than a tool, consisting of several parts that transmit forces, and need to be powered or perform a physical task: a crane is a machine, but so is a lawn mower and cash register. an instrument is either a delicate tool for skilled precision work or a measuring device: a scapel and a termometer are instruments. an appliance is usually an item of domestic or office equipment powered from the mains: vacuum cleaners and liquidisers are appliances. a utensil is portable, and is usually in practice a domestic container: a sauce pan is an utencil. a device is usually a piece of mechanical equipment ingenously concived for a staled purpose. a gadget is a small often novel and electronic device that may form a part of a piece of machinery’ the art of looking sideways a. fletcher

ct:high Serena looks at patterns, and books, she uses mt:high her own inspiration which
contains a technical side to it, like you do in so many other subjects. but when she’s doing her own projects, she can be as creative as she wants. inventing new ways of working her knitting materials.
ct:high mt:low
João uses his brain to work. he needs to work out concepts, so most of his physical tools, are writing tools. then he has all these methods for having ideas and putting his concepts into words, like this particular music and walking around the table.
ct:high Chris depends on his tools, he can decide on he’s mt:high going to record or edit a film. but he can’t film or record without his tools. and recording has a lot of sides to it, sound/visibility/image.
ct:high Soraia is even more tool dependent. mt:high being a nurse, she need to pay attention to hy-
gine and has a lot of procedures and rules she needs to follow. being gloves the most important tool.
ct stands for concept tools (or non-material tools) which normally mean that people can think about things themselves and need to in order to complete a task) mt stands for material tools. which people might depend from in order to do what they need to do.
conclusions out of interview: people in creative jobs, such as fashion, film and copywriting that we have seen before, will have conceptual tools, which come with the right of decision making, style and thinking, in different proportions depending or where they work, etc. This doesn’t mean to say that people which depend a lot on material tools, end up not having as much use of decision thought my themselves including creative freedom. For example film requires one to be creative on both process of filming and editing and is also dependent or recording materials, same with photographers. I believe that if these people were to collaborate, they would need to use ‘conceptual tools’. to think about concepts of a certain project together and understand how they can use each other’s skills and put those into practice. leave the material tools a side for a while an focus on thinking together, with their abilities in mind.

GLOBAL SERVICE JAM 48H TO DESIGN A SERVICE I participated in Global Service Jam London, we were a group of 8 people, in constant livestreaming to the world and watching places like Lisbon working at the same time, having the some hours of work. we used post-its, marker pens, and huge A2 papers to write on and brainstorming. it was intense, hard, we didn’t know eachother and had 48 hours to make up something. great initiative, though!
notes on a group interview. this interview was after global service jam london. where these people had just ended a world-wide happening 48H event in order to design a service. people were seperated in groups of 7/8.therefore the responses couldn’t have been refresher out of the oven! motivated or not, possible solution and debate was made possible reflecting upon recent events.
TARGET GROUP BEING ANY TYPE OF A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY TEAM. THIS TOOL IS BASED ON DESIGN PROCESS, HOWEVER TAKEN OUT OF IT’S CONTEXT TO THE POINT THAT IT FITS ANY OTHER SUBJECT AND SO THAT DESIGN DOESN’T NEED TO BE ONE OF THESE SUBJECTS. DESIGN IS A PLAN. SO THAT PLANING A PROJECT IS THE DESIGN PROCESS, TOGETHER WITH OTHER DESIGN-SPECIFIC TECHNIQUES.
this tool WON’T FIT ALL PROJECTS IN ALL IT’S STEPS, BUT THERE MIGHT BE TIMES WHERE YOU NEVER TRIED A CERTAIN ‘STEP‘ OR WAY OF THINKING ON A PROJECT BEFORE.GIVE EVERY STEP A CHANCE. IF IT DOESN’T WORK. PEOPLE SHOULD SKIP IT. THAT SHOULD’NT BE A PROBLEM.
Ideas
serious
play
it would be great
if I used a type which looked somewhat child-like.
collaboration should be serious. but it should also be seriously fun. Tim Brown, in his TED talk ‘Let’s Play’ talks about the use of kids art toolboxes - which normally include Legos, think colour markers, tape, funky scissors, crayons and lots different kinds of papers. I want to use this tone of voice to call out for motivation.
it would be great
collaboration on a roll
ideally the maximum of use of six people but more people gather around the table if they want to. it’s also important to note that the use of the roll of collaboration not be the main resource of the way of going through a project’s process. it is designed so that people choose the adquate steps which relate to their context, and not the other way round.

instructions:
need . want . desire . would love . finding . desperate for . why? circle the appropriate words in relation to the project. this is a...
what?
when?
how?
answer to what you know already, it's not possible that you know how to answer to everything at this point, so be vaugue, do leave blank spaces and write vague sentences like 'something that would...' 'a device that allows you to...' 'consider the use of...because...'.try it here:
the more you understand it, the better your answer will be.
.
don’t think too much, just start even if you are unispired, because to start is the hardest
the idea is that you lay down this sheet of paper on a table an gather around it. the turn of each person to write down someting will change in each task, so that everyone has a go at different roles. some of these tasks won't make sense to your project directly. you might have to skip some. but always think twice before doing so - trying different ways of doing things can help you innovate. this tone of voice, which can me indentified by lettering in grey is a voice of conscious. it will follow you in every step of the process. the idea of th project is to make collaboration - fun. if you fun, it's likely that all the other members will too. this awakens motivation.

why?
your draft.
we are doing this because:
making it fit better !
after rewritting the questions and agreeing on them, place them here:
after your break, you’ll have 2min. to write ways how you could answer to this differently.together
now, TURN THE BRIEF INTO SEVERAL QUESTIONS.
1. using the same technique - post-its. do somethng different. turn the brief into several short questions, for you to solve. do this separetly. 2. then discussed them one by one regroup them.. 3. end up with a min of 1, max of 3/4. when doing this keep the opportunities you made in mind. THIS WILL HELP YOU FOCUS ON WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO.
2. some might be similar or repeated. group them into areas of similarity. keep them. 1. WRITE DOWN ISSUES THAT YOU ARE ALREADY AWARE OF WHICH COULD DO WITH SOLVING. (relating to this project) use post-its and work together!) place them all at the same time. create your own rythm
ISSUES = OPPORTUNITIES
YOU MIGHT THINK: THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO THINK ABOUT more issues to solve. yet, just check. it might be that you can implement a solution to an underlying problem too. also, you will also find that people around you find issues in somethings that you never dreamed of. issues can become opportunities and present you with very meaninful solutions. who does want meaninful solutions?

THE CLASS WHAT AT THE START OF MY PROJECT, WHEN I GOT IN, AT 11AM, EVERONE HAD ALREADY STARTED READING SEVERAL NEWSPAPER ARTICLES ON THE SUBJECT. IT WAS A SERVICE DESIGN MODULE ON - PATERNITY LEAVE, SINCE, AS FOR THIS APRIL, MOTHERS AND FATHERS WILL BE ABLE TO SPLIT THE PARENTAL LEAVE MORE EQUALLY BETWEEN THE TWO. I INTRODUCED MY PROJECT BRIEFLY AND UNRAVELED THE ROLL ON A TABLE, WHILE EVERYONE GATHERED AROUND. THEY WERE ABOU 10 PEOPLE. THE PROJECT IS DESIGNED FOR 6, I DIDN’T WANT TO TAKE THE ROLE OF A LEADER OR PARTICIPATING. THIS WAY, I WOULD BE ABLE TO DETECT problems they might have on reading which activities they would need to be doing. However, the present of me - as designer of the project, a person able to confirm what they were reading, together with the teacher, made the group look for our approval in relation to their thinking and thought. but we made an effort not to intervene. intervention notes. things in red mean things i could look at 1. nobody wanted to make the first move. 2. ‘what‘ on brief? someone asked me. might be that I need to explain better that everystep won’t apply to everyproject.
3. people corrected mistakes, after I asked. 4. on summarize, they didn’t know where to start but then found the numbers. (prototypes was B&W which doesn’t help) 5. there had to be a leader to create rythm. this worked. 6. change of direction in text really worked in general.. someone said: ‘its your time to read‘ see this on put yourself on others shoes
7. add ‘re-write‘ to new aims, objectives one might have. 8. the idea of going backwards and forwards worked well, a play with it would complicate it more than it needs to, but its a nice fact. 9. on research warm up. make clear that quotes are quotes. is this clear with colour? 10. ‘shoes’ - add (your name) under ‘I AM‘
