If two people both attain a weight loss of 10kg, it looks as if they have achieved the same result. Is this true? Weight in kilograms is equal, but when you look at it more critically, there are large and significant differences. The weight loss in one person can consist mainly of decrease in fat mass, while the weight loss in another will entail lean body mass. How do you ensure that weight loss is to reduce fat and not lean body mass?

Lean Body mass vs. Fat mass What is the difference between fat and lean body mass? Fat mass is that part of the total body weight, which is made up of adipose tissue. Lean body mass is the part of the total body weight, consisting of muscle tissue, bone and moisture. Adipose tissue is also called passive tissue. It uses no energy in idle moments. Muscle tissue is called active tissue. This tissue does use energy at rest.

Minimum Calorie Intake, Drastic Consequences The idea of most of the dieters is to reduce the caloric intake. Cakes, candy, cookies and other snacks may or may not be substituted for healthy variants resulting in a minimal intake of calories. In many cases, they also exercise more. Sport intensity goes up. The result is that the body will consume more calories. This sounds like the ideal way to lose weight, but there is a downside to this method.

The Survival Mechanism Every body has a minimum energy requirement. Research has shown that when the available energy is less than 30kcal per kilogram of lean body mass, the hormonal and metabolic balance is disturbed.

For example, a woman weighing 65kilo and a fat percentage of 25% will be eating at least 1462kcal in order not to land in survival mode. 65/100 * 25 = 16,25kg Fat mass (65 to 16.25) x30 = 1462,5kcal

A consequence of this is that the muscles are broken down, because they consume very much energy (active tissue). In addition, the thyroid operation reduces. The body switches to a slower combustion rate. The moment that there is good deal of eating, the body stores in adipose tissue as the energy to be used at a later time as an energy source.

Example: the lady in the illustration above had intended to eat at least 1462,5kcal so as not to be in the survival phase. Supposing she goes to exercise at the gym 3 times a week, each time she burns 500kcal, then she will have to eat in order not to get into the survival mode minimum of 1676,5kcal. (500x3) / 7 = 214kcal 1462.5 + 214 = 1676,5kcal

Lose weight appropriately You want to make sure that the weight loss is to reduce fat. Keep in mind the physical energy. Do not go on a drastic reduction in the number of calories and keep moving just to strengthen the muscles. This ensures that the weight loss on the scale is actually fat mass.
