The Facts About Smoking

Smoking is one of the most common addictions in the modern world. The toxic substance nicotine, creates an addictive effect, which is dependent on the smoker with his smoking product, whether it is to the cigarette, cigar or hookah. The carcinogenic effects of smoking are mainly the presence of tar. He who smokes regularly runs a greater risk of having lung cancer, mouth cancer, lip cancer and heart disease. Quitting smoking can have major health benefits, while it does not matter what age you are. Let us now look at other reasons you (if you are a smoker) should quit smoking 1. Mental decline Smokers are more prone to dementia. So says Dutch researchers at the Erasmus Medical Center based on an analysis of over 9200 men and women aged 65-plus. They, (smokers) go more than four times fast as mentally backward than nonsmokers. The more people smoked cigarettes per day, the greater the deterioration of their brains. 2. Blindness Smokers are three to four times as likely to become blind by age-related macular degeneration (MD). In Western countries, it is the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness. More than a quarter of all cases of MD are caused by smoking. A boost: by quitting smoking, you lower your risk immediately. 3. Older skin Did you know that smoking and passive smoking makes your skin to grow older ten to twenty years before time? Forties who smoke often have as many wrinkles as non-smoking sixties. This is because smoking reduces blood flow to your skin, so that it gets less oxygen and essential nutrients. The result: a gray color, a less elastic, dry skin and wrinkles. The more you smoke, the more likely it occurs.

4. Snoring According to a survey of 15,000 men and women, Smoking can cause snoring. A quarter of smokers snored, while only 14% of the non-smokers had suffered from it. The more cigarettes people flared during the day, the more they snored at night. 5. Breast Cancer A large US study of more than 116,000 women provides evidence that smoking is a major risk for getting breast cancer. During the four years that this study lasted were 2005 women who developed breast cancer. Among the women who smoked were 30% with more breast cancer than women who had never smoked. Most at risk were women who had started smoking before their first pregnancy, before their twentieth year, or at least five years. Too many years and more than twenty cigarettes a day increased the risk. The good news: the researchers found no evidence that women who had smoked in the past only ran a greater risk of breast cancer. Quitting smoking can protect one against breast cancer, according to this research. 6. Early transition Young smokers are almost 60 percent more likely to get in the transition before their 45th year. The more you smoke, the greater the chance. An early transition brings your health at risk, because you therefore have more danger of heart disease and osteoporosis. Quitting smoking helps. Women, who had done so a decade before menopause, were found nearly 90 percent less likely to have a premature menopause than their smoking peers. 7. On average, Smokers die 10 years earlier According to a 50 year old study, people who smoke die, on average, 10 years earlier than non-smokers. These data were published by the British Medical Journal (www.bmj.co.uk) research which started in 1951 and was carried out by Professor Richard Doll. He sent questionnaires to 35,000 physicians. Smokers are 50 percent more likely to die before their seventieth birthday than non-smokers.

Increase in the life expectancy of non-smokers has remained constant over the past fifty years, compared to smokers. 8. Hot Flashes When you smoke you can get more and more intense hot flashes during menopause. The more you smoke, the more likely its occurrence. 9. Slacker breasts American plastic surgeon Brian Rinker said 93 women came to him in order to correct their sagging breasts. On average they were 39 years old. They had been pregnant at least once, and almost all of them had breastfed. However, breast-feeding turned out not to be the cause of the change in shape of their breasts. Still, the number of pregnancies had a role as with each pregnancy the breasts are softer. But even more surprising was the fact that even smoking was an important risk factor. Apparently, smoking not only affects the elasticity of the facial skin, but also those of your breasts.

Smoking: The Facts - Nicotine addiction can strike at a very early age. The younger a person starts smoking, the greater the chance that someone will be a heavy smoker as an adult. - Seventy percent of all students who smoke at the beginning of their training still continue smoking when they leave school. - Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer of women and men. More than eighty percent of lung cancer is caused by smoking. - There are more than 4,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke which at least 50 have been shown to cause cancer. - Secondhand smoke is also a potential killer. It contains DDT, arsenic, formaldehyde and carbon monoxide. This may cause cerebral infarction, heart disease, asthma, and many other diseases and defects due to reduced vitamin and mineral uptake. - Low tar, nicotine and filters do not reduce the danger!

- Tobacco smoke is as deadly as with cigarettes. - Pipe smokers have an increased risk of mouth and throat cancer by elevated carbon monoxide. - Chewing tobacco is not a safe alternative to smoking because of the high concentration of nicotine in the blood.

Quit smoking? Many smokers would like to stop, however they realize that this addictive habit is hard to break. Here comes the handy quote; "When you first do not succeed, try again, and again, and again." The more attempts you make the more chance you have to succeed.
