Editorial Excelente temporada de deportes náuticos Finaliza la temporada náutica en las Islas, y en el área de Turismo del Gobierno de Canarias nos sentimos muy satisfechos del alto nivel registrado en todas las competiciones, que el Ejecutivo viene patrocinando. Alto nivel, tanto en el número de participantes, como en el aspecto profesional. A pesar de ser un año determinante por una coyuntura económica complicada, los eventos que se celebran en las Islas Canarias siguen disfrutando de una excelente reputación entre los deportistas internacionales que, año tras año, acuden puntualmente a las citas deportivas que se celebran en las siete Islas. Es importante también resaltar como, en cada edición, queda de manifiesto el brillante palmarés de los deportistas canarios, haciéndose cada vez más un hueco entre los deportistas náuticos más prestigiosos del mundo. El balance del patrocinio del Gobierno de Canarias en todos estos eventos no puede ser, por lo tanto, más positivo. Creemos que se ha alcanzado el objetivo principal y con el que continuaremos trabajando en 2011: situar a las Islas Canarias en un lugar destacado a nivel mundial para la práctica de cualquier deporte náutico tanto por su privilegiada situación geográfica, como por sus especiales condiciones climatológicas

An excellent water sports season As the Islands’ water sports season comes to a close, here at the Canaries Tourism Office, we feel extremely proud of the high levels reached by each sponsored competition, both in terms of participation and professional performance. Although the year was marked by significant economical complications, the events hosted by the Canary Islands maintained their fine reputation among the cohort of renowned international athletes who return, year after year, to partake in the competitions held throughout the seven Islands. We’re also greatly impressed by the record-breaking performances of the Canaries’ own homegrown athletes, who seem to always stand out against their competitors and excel at multiple events. The Canary Islands’ official sponsorship of these competitions, therefore, couldn’t be better. We believe we’ve fully met our chief objective, one we’ll keep striving towards in 2011: to highlight the Canary Islands as a truly unique destination, and to draw world-wide attention to the steadily excellent weather and geographical conditions that make them ideal for the practice of water sports.

L

a celebración en los últimos meses de competiciones y torneos de prestigio internacional en la costa de las Islas Canarias, que han traído al Archipiélago a los mejores del mundo en distintas disciplinas deportivas, y en los que una vez más ha destacado el papel de los deportistas canarios, han puesto a las Islas Canarias en el punto de mira de aficionados de todas partes del mundo. Veinticuatro competiciones de distintas disciplinas deportivas, incluidas en el patrocinio del Gobierno de Canarias, conforman la temporada de 2010, que transcurre entre los meses de abril y noviembre.

En el número anterior de esta publicación del Área de Turismo del Gobierno de Canarias, informábamos de las competiciones

celebradas hasta el pasado mes de agosto, y en el presente número hacemos una reseña sobre los eventos que han tenido lugar en los meses de septiembre, octubre y noviembre.

Este respaldo a los eventos deportivos forma parte de la estrategia de promoción diseñada por el Área de Turismo para dar a conocer la excepcionalidad del Archipiélago canario como destino único para la práctica de todos los deportes náuticos. El éxito de estos eventos y competiciones por su participación, organización y seguimiento, el admirable plantel de deportistas canarios en diversas disciplinas, y el número de aficionados cada vez mayor a los deportes de mar, confirman que las Islas Canarias son un lugar extraordinario para la práctica de los deportes náuticos.

High-level competitions in an exceptional setting Sailing, surfing, underwater photography, and sport fishing bring water sports’ top players together in the Canaries

T

he competitions and tournaments of international reknown held in the Canaries in recent months have gathered the best in the world of water sports, once again highlighting the major talent and unbeatable performances of the Islands’ own athletes, and drawing the world’s attention to the beauty of the Canaries’ natural landscape. Between the months of April and November 2010, the islands hosted a total of twenty-four competitions, in various different water sports.

The previous issue of this Canary Island Tourism Bureau publication described the competitions held through last August; this issue summarises those that have taken place in the months of September, October, and November.

Covering water sports events is a key component of the Tourism Office’s promotional strategy designed to highlight the Canary Islands as an exceptional setting for the practice of all water sports. The competitions’ overall success, large number of participants, seamless coordination, and the blend of outstanding athletes and enthused fans that they attract, altogether substantiate the Canaries’ favourable environment and unique natural characteristics.

The main event

a vela ha sido la gran protagonista de los deportes náuticos durante los meses de septiembre y octubre, con la celebración de cuatro pruebas de alto nivel en aguas canarias. El Trofeo Su Alteza Real Príncipe de Asturias, que se celebra cada año en la bahía de la ciudad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, abrió el circuito canario de regatas. Las embarcaciones CAM, CepsaCaja Siete-Marina Rubicón, Macaco, Jilorio y Cochafisco se proclamaron vencedoras en sus respectivas clases en la XXI edición de este trofeo, que organiza el Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria, y puntuable para el Campeonato de España de Cruceros y la Copa de España de Cruceros Zona de Canarias.

En el litoral de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, recalaron excelentes embarcaciones de crucero locales y foráneas, para participar en la Regata S.A.R. Infanta Cristina, que alcanzó este año su decimoséptima edición. El Butxaca, de Joaquín Blanco, y en representación del Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria, fue el ganador de esta cita deportiva al acumular un mayor número de primeros en las pruebas disputadas.

Y en lo que respecta al Trofeo César Manrique, el CAM, Macaco, el Butxaca, y el Garuda se proclamaron ganadores, en sus respectivos grupos, del IX Trofeo César ManriquePuerto Calero que se disputó en aguas de Lanzarote. El barco del medallista olímpico, Fernando León, el CAM, se im-

puso en su clase al clasificarse en el primer puesto en las tres regatas del circuito canario.

Lanzarote fue escenario, en el mismo mes de octubre, de la celebración de la prestigiosa Prueba del Circuito Mundial Regata RC 44, en la que el barco llamado 17, y patroneado por Anders Myralf y el campeón de la 33 Copa América, James Spithill, se proclamaron campeones absolutos. El estadounidense BMW-Oracle, patroneado por el lanzaroteño José Juan Calero, se proclamó campeón en el apartado de flota. La organización de esta prueba corrió a cargo del Club de Mar Puerto Calero, bajo el patrocinio de la Real Federación Española en colaboración con la Asociación de RC 44 Clase.

Sailing was the main event in the water sports world throughout September and October, starring as the focus of four high-level competitions. The eleventh Su Alteza Real Príncipe de Asturias Trophy, held annually in the bay of Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, opened the regatta season, crowning sailboats CAM, Cepsa-Caja Siete-Marina Rubicón, Macaco, Jilorio and Cochafisco the proud winners, in their respective classes, of this prestigious competition organised by the Royal Nautical Society of Gran Canaria and qualifying event for the Spanish Sailing Championships and the Canary Islands’ Spanish Cup. All sorts of impressive local and foreign cruisers docked at the coast of Santa Cruz de Tenerife to participate in the 17th Annual S.A.R. Infanta Cristina Regatta. This year, Joaquín Blanco’s Butxaca took home first prize, representing the Royal Nautical Society of Gran Canaria, and excelling in all the event’s segments.

The winners of the César Manrique Trophy were the CAM, Macaco, the Butxaca, and the Garuda, in their respective categories, at the 9th Annual César Manrique-Puerto Calero Cup, which took place in the waters of Lanzarote. Olympic winner Fernando León and his CAM won first place in the three Canary regattas the tournament features.

a isla de Lanzarote acogió un año más un evento del Circuito Mundial ASP con categoría de 6 estrellas Prime, máxima categoría del Circuito WQS. El brasileño Heitor Alves, ex corredor del circuito Top 44 y en ese momento número 25 del ranking general, se proclamó ganador del Islas Canarias Santa Pro, consiguiendo así su tercera victoria del año en Europa. Con el objetivo de mejorar su calificación en el tour 2010, un total de 128 riders de los cinco continentes se inscribieron en esta

prueba en la que predominó un surfing rápido y de alto nivel.

El nivel de los competidores en este evento deportivo fue uno de los motivos para que miles de espectadores siguieran la prueba celebrada en Lanzarote por Internet desde más de 47 países diferentes.

En la isla de Gran Canaria, el francés Tim Boal ganó el WQS Islas Canarias Ocean & Earth Pro, con la derecha de El Confital, como escenario. El tinerfeño Jonathan González, campeón de este evento deportivo en dos ocasiones anteriores, logró un merecido tercer puesto.

Estas dos pruebas del circuito europeo convirtieron a las Islas durante dos semanas en el epicentro del surfing mundial.

Torneos de pesca

World Championship, in which the 17, operated by Anders Myralf and 33rd America’s Cup champion James Spithill, took home the championship. The American BMW-Oracle, guided by Lanzarote’s own José Juan Calero, won the fleet race hosted by the Puerto Calero Sea Club and sponsored by the Spanish Royal Sailing Association in collaboration with the RC 44 Class Association.

a XVIII edición del Concurso de Pesca de Altura de Puerto Calero ha sido una de las más emocionantes de los últimos años, con tres jornadas plenas de capturas, fotografías y sueltas. El barco Maynieves de Alfonso Vals, de la isla de Fuerteventura, fue el ganador al conseguir la mayor puntuación.

En el mismo mes de septiembre se celebró, también en la isla de Lanzarote, la octava edición del torneo de pesca de altura Marina Rubicón Marlin Cup. El ganador de este torneo, que se caracteriza por la suelta posterior de las especies capturadas y en el que participaron este año 50 embarcaciones, fue el barco Crater, de Fuerteventura, que tendrá el privilegio de representar a Lanzarote en el mundial de pesca de altura IGFA, en México.

The surfing elite For another year, the island of Lanzarote hosted the WSQ Circuit’s 6* Prime Surfing Championship.

Heitor Alves of Brazil, winner of the Top 44 and at the time number 25 in world-wide ranking, won the Canary Island Santa Pro, thus achieving his third victory for the year in Europe. With the objective of improving their performance in the 2010 tour, a total of 128 riders from all five continents participated in this event, dominated mostly by high-level and fast surfing. The competitors’ amazing talent and unbeatable performance drew the attention of viewers from over 47 different countries, who were able to watch live on the internet.

On the island of Gran Canaria, Frenchman Tim Boal won the WQS Canary Island Earth & Pro, with El Confital for his surroundings. And Jonathan González of Tenerife, two-time champion of the event, won a well-deserved third place. Both events turned the Islands into a veritable worldwide surfing epicentre for an unbelievable two weeks.

Sport fishing competitions The 7th Annual Puerto Calero Sport Fishing Tournament was one of the most exciting events of recent years, packed with three full days of amazing catches and photography. The Maynieves, guided by Alfonso Vals of Fuerteventura, won the competition by earning the highest number of points. September also saw the celebration, on the island of Lanzarote, of the 8th Annual Marlin Cup at Marina Rubicón. The winner of this event, in which all caught fish are returned to the sea, and which drew 50 participants, was the Crater of Fuerteventura, who will now go on to represent Lanzarote in the IGFA Offshore World Championship in Mexico.

a sexta edición del Concurso Internacional de Fotografía Submarina, Fotosub Gran Canaria-Costa Mogán, congregó a 12 equipos de altísimo nivel que convierten a esta prueba en un referente mundial de la fotografía submarina. Fotógrafos de Alemania, España, Italia, Noruega, Portugal y Reino Unido se reunieron en el Puerto de Mogán para participar en esta competición, que coincidió con el 25 aniversario del Puerto Deportivo de Mogán, donde quedó demostrado, una vez más, el alto nivel de los fotógrafos submarinos canarios.

La pareja formada por Carmelo Andrades y Warkydea Vega se proclamó campeona de este certamen, ocupando el primer puesto de la clasificación con el premio a la mejor colección. La principal novedad de este año ha sido la colaboración de la medallista olímpica en natación sincronizada, Paola Tirados, que realizó una escenografía sumergida dedicada a la defensa y protección de los fondos marinos.

La pareja formada por David Barrio y María Luisa Quintanilla obtuvieron el primer premio por su colección de fotografías en el Open Fotusub Isla de El Hierro. El segundo premio en esta nueva edición del certamen internacional de fotografía submarina de El Hierro fue para otro clásico en el abierto herreño, Arturo Telle con su modelo Montse Grillo, actuales subcampeones de España de fotografía submarina. El jurado concedió el premio a la tercera mejor colección al equipo vencedor en el anterior Open, formado por el fotosub local, Juan Ramón Marcelino (actual campeón de Canarias) y su modelo María Jose Rodríguez.

Más de cuatrocientas personas, entre profesionales y aficionados, disfrutaron del programa del Open Fotosub Playa Viva, que tuvo lugar en Las Canteras, en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Un año más destacó la calidad de los trabajos del certamen en las dos categorías profesionales, con trece parejas en el Open Fotosub y diez personas en la modalidad de Caza. Las parejas formadas por Juan Sanabria y Toan Tormo, y Arturo Telle y Yolanda Marrero, se proclamaron ganadoras en las categorías Open Compacta y Open Reflex, respectivamente.

The 6th Annual International Underwater Photography Contest, Fotosub Gran Canaria-Costa Mogán, gathered twelve expert teams and made this event a worldwide point of reference for underwater photography. Hailing from Germany, Spain, Italy, Norway, Portugal, and the United Kingdom, these renowned photographers travelled to Puerto de Mogán to demonstrate their skill and compete in this contest, which happened to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Mogán’s Yacht Marina.

Carmelo Andrades and Warkydea Vega together won the contest, taking first place in the category for best collection. The major novelty this year was the collaboration of synchronised swimmer and Olympic medallist Paola Tirados, whose underwater images were dedicated to the defence and protection of marine life.

David Barrio and María Luisa Quintanilla won first place for their photo collection in the Open Fotosub Contest at El Hierro. Second place in this international underwater photography contest went to Island native Arturo Telle, with his model Montse Grillo, currently Spain’s underwater photography sub-champions. The judges gave the third place award to the winning team of last year’s Open, comprised of local Juan Ramón Marcelino (current champion in the Canaries) and model María Jose Rodríguez.

More than four hundred audience members – professionals as well as fans – were able to enjoy the spectacular Open Fotosub programme held towards the end of October on the Las Canteras Beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The quality of the work produced stood out yet again, surpassing all expectations in both professional categories, with three teams participating in the Open Fotosub capacity, and ten individuals in the Catch category.

The teams made up of Juan Sanabria and Joan Tormo, and Arturo Telle and Yolanda Marrero, were the winners of the Open Compact and Open Reflex awards, respectively.

Una vez más la PWA cierra el circuito mundial

as hermanas Daida e Iballa Ruano Moreno con las canarias Daida e Iballa en el podium han llevado el nombre de las Islas Canarias a lo más alto del windsurfing. Durante once años, las gemelas de Pozo Izquierdo (Gran Canaria) han Iballa ganó en el año 1999 su primer Mundial y Daida lo ocupado los primeros puestos de los campeonatos mundiales consiguió en el 2000, y han seguido compitiendo durante once de su especialidad. Iballa y Daida celebran con entusiasmo el años en la élite del windsurf en las modalidades de Olas y Fretriunfo conseguido en esta temporada, sin embargo los éxitos estyle. “Es un orgullo representar a Canarias por el mundo” Una vez más, las hermanas Ruano logran los títulos de campeona y subcampeona del mundo en la disciplina de Olas. ¿Cómo han recibido este premio?

Pues muy bien! En circuito no se sabe nada hasta realizar la última prueba y como no es en casa, siempre hay más estrés de lo habitual…pero contentas de poder traer más trofeos a casa.

El hecho de no poder salir al agua en Alemania, ¿desluce este trofeo? ¡No, para nada! A veces ocurre que, en algunas pruebas, no se dan las condiciones apropiadas para celebrarla, es una pena tanto por el organizador como por el público que se desplaza hasta la zona para ver el espectáculo, pero nos pilló un temporal antes del evento y justo cuando empezó hubo calma sin olas. La naturaleza es así, dependemos de ella. ¿Qué ha significado el mantenerse durante una década como las grandes campeonas del windsurf mundial?

Ha supuesto un gran esfuerzo, tanto mental como físico. En ocasiones, la parte mental te traiciona y, como consecuencia, entras en fase de decaimiento físico, pero no hay nada mejor que un buen baño de wind para despojarte de todo esto y desconectar por completo; es la mejor de las sensaciones.

Además, mantenerse en los primeros puestos es muy complicado, hay quienes piensan que nosotras lo tenemos fácil, nada más lejos de la realidad, el gran reto es mantenerse arriba. ¿Tienen el reconocimiento que merecen por parte del mundo deportivo y de la sociedad, en general?

En Canarias nos tratan bien aunque nos costó

nuestros años de trabajo que nos considerasen como hoy en día. En la Península es diferente, la prensa deportiva aún no hace mucho…. A excepción de esto, en todas partes del mundo nos tratan muy bien en cada competición o en cada evento al que acudimos, pero aún queda mucho trabajo por hacer.

Han practicado windsurf en numerosas playas de distintas partes del mundo, ¿qué tiene Pozo Izquierdo que lo haga distinto de otro lugar?

Pozo Izquierdo tiene muchos días de viento al año, con lo cual nos permite entrenar mucho en este lugar. Aun así, en invierno nos gusta ir a otras islas como Fuerteventura para entrenar en el Norte con viento de otra dirección, porque en competición hay de todo. Nos encanta ir algunas veces al año a Tenerife y Lanzarote, y el próximo año queremos visitar las islas de La Palma, El Hierro y La Gomera, seguro que hay buenos sitios por descubrir. ¿Qué opinión tienen fuera de las Islas acerca del windsurf y el surf que se practica en Canarias?

Pues que es la meca europea tanto del surf como del windsurf. Canarias tiene mucha fama por sus buenas olas en invierno y buen viento en verano. Mucha gente viene aquí para entrenar y disfrutar de las condiciones naturales de las Islas; son el Hawaii europeo.

Me imagino que les habrán preguntado en numerosas ocasiones por su condición de gemelas y el hecho de ser rivales en la misma modalidad deportiva. ¿Ha sido esto un obstáculo o un aliciente?

Hay que tener en cuenta que, desde pequeñas, hemos hecho las mismas cosas, o casi

he sisters Daida and Iballa Ruano Moreno have brought the Canary Islands to the forefront of worldwide windsurfing. For eleven years, the twins, originally from Pozo Izquierdo, Gran Canaria, have won the top prizes in international windsurfing championships. Iballa and Daida are super-enthused about the triumphs they achieved this season, still recognising that the great successes earned in these years may not be the most important of their careers, but rather “the values of improvement and overcoming obstacles, which are both implicit to windsurfing.” For these triumphant windsurfers, “it is really comforting to be able to share our windsurfing passion with others.”

Iballa won her first worldwide championship in 1999, and Daida earned hers in 2000; since then, they have been competing in the most elite windsurfing circles, participating in both Wave and Freestyle competitions.

Their latest success came in the German town of Sylt, the site of this year’s PWA (Professional Windsurfers Association) contest: Daida regained her world champion title in the wave discipline, and Iballa, who holds four titles already, came in second.

“It’s a pleasure to represent the Canaries” The Ruano sisters have once again won first and second place, worldwide, in the Wave windsurfing category.

How did you receive the honours?

Pretty well! During the championship, you don’t really have a sense of what’s going on until the end, and it’s not like at home, there’s a lot of added stress. But we’re thrilled to be bringing more trophies back with us.

Did the conditions you had to face in Germany take away from the trophy in any way?

Not at all! Sometimes it just happens that certain contest don’t have the greatest conditions for competing. It’s a pain for the organiser as well as the audience, who’s presumably come all this way to watch the event, but it just so happened that we had a storm right before the competition and so when it started there was total calm, and not a lot of waves. But that’s nature; and that’s what the sport depends on.

What does it take to hold onto your titles as worldwide windsurfing champions for over a decade?

Well, it has taken great effort, mental as well as physical. At times, the mental aspect betrays you, and when that happens, your physical skills decline a bit. But there’s nothing better than a good wind-bath to pull you out of all that and disconnect completely; it’s one of the greatest feelings in the world. And holding onto the number one spot is actually very complicated; some say it comes easy, and they couldn’t be farther from the truth. The real challenge is staying on top.

sporting world, and in society in general?

In the Canaries we’re well treated, although it took a couple of years of hard work to earn the regard we have today. It’s different on the peninsula, the sports press still doesn’t dote on us all that much… But still, we’re treated very well all over the word, in each competition or event we attend; but there’s still a lot of work to be done.

You’ve windsurfed at many different beaches, all over the world; what’s special about Pozo Izquierdo? What sets it apart from other coastlines?

Pozo Izquierdo has a lot of windy days per year, which allows us to train quite a lot right here. Even so, in winter we like to visit other islands, like Fuerteventura, and train in the North, with wind from another direction, because in competitions, you get all sorts of conditions and you need to be prepared for anything.

We like to go to Tenerife and Lanzarote several times a year, and next year we want to visit La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera islands; there’s sure to be great places to explore there.

What do you think is the outside perception of the Canaries’ surfing and windsurfing scene?

Well, it’s the European epicentre of surfing and windsurfing. The Canaries is known for its excellent waves in winter and its strong wind in summer. Lots of people come here to train and enjoy the Islands’ natural conditions; we’re basically the Hawaii of Europe.

You’re probably asked all the time about what it’s like to be twins and to compete against one another in the same sport. Has that been an obstacle or more of an incentive?

The thing is that ever since we were little, we’ve done all the same things, or nearly, and we’ve played the same sports, shared sails, boards, and other equipment, and we’ve developed our sports skills together, and very speedily. We encourage one another all the time, we love what we do and we dedicate a great deal of time to making our dreams reality, travelling around the world together, and trying to live a life as female athletes; yes, it’s definitely been an incentive.

Iballa, cuando piensas en ganar a Daida, ¿qué ves, a tu hermana o a una gran rival?

El primer año, 1999, gané yo, luego tuve malas lesiones y estuve mucho tiempo fuera del circuito. Volví con buena racha y conseguí el título mundial en tres ocasiones más. De todas formas, en Pozo Izquierdo, Daida es imbatible y es una de las pruebas más importantes del circuito. No la veo como una rival, sino como mi hermana, si me quedo segunda me siento también campeona. Soy afortunada por

el hecho de poder hacer lo que quiero cada día, un deporte que me gusta y con el que puedo sobrevivir. Luchamos por esto, para que haya más gente en el agua, más afición, y sobre todo más ayudas para el deporte.

Admiramos a todas las chicas deportistas que luchan por hacerse un hueco en este mundo y que destacan en sus respectivos deportes.

Who are your major sponsors and which brands do you work with?

Our main sponsor is the clothing brand Roxy. They’ve been with us since our first competition year, and we wouldn’t have been able to travel without their help.

They’re a big happy family, a wonderful team, and we have the great fortune of being the only windsurfers on it. We’re also indebted to VW Comerciales because they’ve been with us since day one and they’ve shown they’re much more than just a sponsor. We also work with the board and sail companies Starboard and Severne, as well as Flying Objects accessories, Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia, the Santa Lucía City Council, and the brand Dwwarf8. We’re grateful for all their help and support.

What does it mean to be a part of the Water Sports Scuderia?

For us, being part of this team is hugely important, and we think it’s a great idea because in the Canaries, there are excellent athletes in all areas and disciplines of water sports. Since we began competing at the professional level, we’ve been able to represent the Islands in all the places we’ve travelled, and it is a point of pride for us to be able to take the name of the Canaries with us all over the globe.

The Ruano sisters serve as role models for lots of people; who are your role models?

All female athletes who fight to make their way in the sporting world and be the best at what they do.

“In the end, the title ends up at home” Iballa, when you think of beating Daida, who do you see: a sister? or a rival?

The first year, 1999, I won; later I suffered some bad injuries and I didn’t compete for a while. I came back on a winning streak and won the world title three more times.

But in any case, in Pozo Izquierdo, Daida is unbeatable, and definitely one of the major players in the tournament. I don’t see her as a rival, but as my sister; and if I come in second, I feel like a champion,

too. I’m lucky to be able to do what I love every day, and to excel in a sport I enjoy and live on. We fight for this, to get more people surfing, with more passion, and to garner more support for the sport in general.

high-level competitor would tell you the same thing: that it’s harder to maintain what you have achieved than to earn it just once. So my challenge is to improve year after year and demonstrate a consistently high level of performance.

Daida, after successive world champion titles, what is your goal for next year’s season?

I’ve been world champion a total of 15 times, in the Waves and Freestyle disciplines. I think that any

With the main objective of highlighting the distinctive character and potential of the Canary Islands, and their favourability on the part of the ever-growing water sports segment, the Canary Islands Tourism Office has launched the Canary Island Water Sports Experience, effectively certifying quality, professionalism, and safety measures in the products and services offered at all establishments involved in the water sports world.

The aim of this initiative is to invite visitors to engage in the ultimate marine experience by offering them a vast array of services and options: training sessions, boat and equipment rental for virtually any water sport, safe and modern ports, hotels, restaurants, technical and personal services, competitions, and blue ‘playing fields’ of immense fun and entertainment.

Entre las aguas de Sotavento

emperaturas agradables durante todo el año, aguas transparentes, y lo más importante, un viento intenso y constante… ¿suena a paraíso del windsurfista? Eso mismo debió pensar René Egli cuando decidió instalarse, ya hace más de un cuarto de siglo, en la isla de Fuerteventura.

Este visionario del imperio del viento se instaló en la playa de Sotavento, convertida hoy en día en una de las referencias mundiales del windsurf y kiteboarding, y desde su llegada a las Islas Canarias apostó por la promoción de los deportes náuticos en este bello lugar de Fuerteventura. René Egli nació en Lucerna (Suiza), llegó a Fuerteventura hace 26 años con la idea de montar un centro de windsurf que algún día se pudiese comparar con los grandes resorts de esquí europeos y norteamericanos.

“Un espacio para que la gente disfrutara de unas vacaciones activas, con la idea de practicar windsurf, y hoy en día, kiteboarding”, recuerda el padre de un megaproyecto que integra principalmente dos centros profesionales –con una laguna de tres kilómetros de longitud, regulada por las mareas, tiendas de prendas deportivas de alta calidad en todo el sur de Fuerteventura, un Café Bistro Bar el cual se convierte cada día en lugar de encuentro para los windsurfistas y kitesurfistas y un gran almacén de equipamiento náutico especializado.

Fundó su primera escuela de vela y windsurfing en Sitges (Barcelona) en 1977. De espíritu emprendedor, en el año 1984 se instaló frente al Hotel Gorriones (hoy Meliá Gorriones) con ocho tablas y 30 aparejos de windsurf.

Un año después creó la marca Fuerte Action y abrió su primera tienda. En los

In the waters of Sotavento

reat temperatures all year round, crystal-clear waters, and, most importantly, strong, steady wind… sound like a windsurfer’s paradise? That’s what René Egli thought when he set his eyes on the island of Fuerteventura, over fifteen years ago.

When this wind-empire visionary moved to Sotavento Beach, it was not yet one of the world’s best-loved sites for windsurf and kiteboarding; but since Egli’s arrival, the Canaries have supported and promoted the practice of water sports on this beautiful island. René Egli was born in Lucerne (Switzerland), and came to Fuerteventura 26 years ago, with the idea of founding a windsurfing centre that would one day reach the level of the great European and North American ski resorts.

inicios todo era a pequeña escala, con muy pocas tablas en propiedad y apenas dos o tres profesores, sin instalaciones fijas, en una locura constante de ir y venir en todo terreno y remolques. Hoy, en temporada alta, René Egli emplea a cerca de un centenar de personas y sus instalaciones acogen a más de 17.000 clientes cada año. “Todo ha crecido mucho”, comenta René Egli, que en el año 2007 recibió la Medalla de Bronce de Fuerteventura en reconocimiento de sus méritos.

Durante estos años, fueron muchas las acciones que se llevaron a cabo, desde visitar a las agencias de viajes, y sobre todo, a la Professional Boardsailing Association (PBA),

actual Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA), “para decirles que tenían que venir a probar las condiciones que ofrecía la Playa de Sotavento”, para así poder organizar una prueba de la Copa del Mundo en Fuerteventura, ya que en pocos lugares encontrarían unas condiciones de viento tan espectaculares.

Aquel contacto con la PBA, que “en un principio no creyó en las excelentes condiciones de este lugar”, fue el germen de lo que, desde la primera prueba en 1986, se ha consolidado como una parada obligatoria en la agenda de los mejores profesionales del planeta.

Cada verano, Sotavento se transforma en la capital mundial del windsurf y kiteboarding.

Récord en el primer Mundial Cuando René Egli llegó a Fuerteventura, la práctica del windsurf era aún minoritaria, “se podía contar con los dedos de una mano a los deportistas en el agua. En cambio, hoy en día, esta Isla es el destino favorito para windsurfistas y kitesurfistas de todo el mundo”. Como en cualquier experiencia, no todo fueron aciertos pues “en principio pensé que podíamos con la categoría de olas, lo cual fue un error que tuvimos que enmendar; la forma de competición que practicábamos en aquellos días se convirtió en el actual Freestyle”, señala. Sin duda el momento más gratificante de ese primer Mundial de Windurfing en Fuerteventura llegó cuando Paskal Maka batió el récord en la disciplina de velocidad. Hoy en día, comenta René, las Islas Canarias “son una zona de entrenamiento para muchos deportistas gracias a las condiciones climatológicas del Archipiélago, y no podemos olvidar que Canarias ha aportado grandes profesionales a los deportes náuticos”.

“A place for people to enjoy active, sports-centred vacations, focused on windsurfing and kiteboarding,” recalls the founder of a mega-project which today encompasses two professional centres, a 3-kilometre-long lagoon, ruled by the tides, and high-end athletic apparel shops all along the island’s south coast, as well as a Bistro Bar Café that serves as the designated meeting place for the world’s top windsurfers and kiteboarders, and a large storage area designed to accommodate specialised nautical equipment.

He founded his first sail and windsurfing school in Sitges (Barcelona) in 1977, and in 1984, his entrepreneurial spirit drove him to set up right in front of the Hotel Gorriones (today the Meliá Gorriones) with eight windsurf boards and 30 rigs. One year later he created the brand Fuerte Action and opened his first shop. In the beginning, the endeavour was small-scale, with just a few boards in stock, and no more than two or three instructors, who would give training sessions without any fixed facilities or infrastructure; it was a constant and chaotic coming and going kind of operation. Today, in the high season, René Egli employs nearly a hundred instructors and other personnel, and his facilities welcome over 17,000 clients a year. “It’s grown quite substantially,” says Egli, also the winner of the 2007 Fuerte Ventura honorary bronze medal.

A lot has been done in recent years, from visiting travel agencies, to contacting the Professional Boardsailing Association (PBA) – today the Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA) – “to let them know that they needed to come check out the conditions at Sotavento Beach,” and in order to ultimately organise a World Cup event there, in light of its truly unique wind conditions. Making contact with the PBA, which “at first did not really grasp the excellent conditions here,” was the first step towards making this Island a required stop on the tour of the world’s most renowned surfers. Each summer, Sotavento becomes the world capital for windsurf and kiteboarding. “It is a very well-known and well-regarded international sports event, and it is truly spectacular to see thousands of people come to cheer on their heroes, and enjoy themselves,” says Annika Ingwerson, public relations manager for the René Egli group.

The René Egli centre is equipped to accommodate beginners just taking their first steps into water sports, as well as advanced athletes and surfing celebrities who have enormous publicity impact and “generate a lot of prestige for the brand and for the Fuerteventura image,” thanks to the large television audiences who watch from afar, and the online and print journalists who follow the story up close.

Breaking a world record in the waves When René Egli first came to Fuerteventura, windsurfing was still very much a minority sport; “you could count the athletes in the water on the fingers of one hand. But today, the island is the preferred destination for wind- and kitesurfers the world over.” As often happens, they weren’t totally all-set from the getgo; “in the beginning, I thought we’d do fine in the wave discipline, which turned out to be a mistake we later had to correct; the mode we practised in those days became what is known today as ‘Freestyle,’” he points out.

Without a doubt, the most gratifying moment of that first Windsurfing International Competition in Fuerteventura came when Paskal Maka broke the world record in the racing discipline. Today, says René, the Canary Islands are “a perfect playing zone for many athletes, thanks in large part to its natural conditions and climate; and we can’t forget that the Canaries have brought the greatest athletes to the field of water sports.”

La aventura de la pesca deportiva L

a riqueza del mar que rodea a las Islas Canarias es otro de los encantos de este destino turístico, y al igual que el resto de deportes náuticos, el agradable clima juega un papel muy importante en el disfrute de la pesca deportiva, permitiendo su práctica durante los doce meses del año.

El mar ofrece gran cantidad de especies para la práctica de la pesca a caña o en su modalidad de altura, si bien la mejor época para esta última es la comprendida entre los meses de mayo y noviembre. El rey indiscutible en esta modalidad de la pesca deportiva es el Marlin Azul, promoviéndose su marcaje y suelta, siempre y cuando el animal tenga posibilidad de sobrevivir.

En las Islas Canarias hay verdadera pasión por esta disciplina deportiva y cada año se celebran varios concursos internacionales de pesca de altura, lográndose varios récord homologados por la IGFA (International Game Fish Association). Dichos récords se han obtenido con especies tan diferentes como el Marlin Azul, el Pez Aguja, el Albacora, el Patudo, el Bonito de Atlántico y el Atún Blanco, entre otros. Las posibilidades que ofrece esta modalidad deportiva han hecho florecer en los últimos años una sub industria turística que ofrece al visitante todas las facilidades para el disfrute de este bello deporte.

Variedad de especies El conjunto de peces que existen en esta zona del Atlántico lo integran elementos atlántico-mediterráneos, tropicales y subtropicales, cosmopolitas, y macaronésicos, lo que origina una gran variedad de especies distribuidas según el tipo de sustracto o la profundidad. En el ecosistema pelágico de Canarias están representados los pelágicos oceánicos y los pelágicos costeros. Entre los primeros, que presentan una marcada estacionalidad, aparecen túnidos netamente tropicales, como el patudo, el rabil y el listado, y otros de aguas templadas como el atún rojo y el atún blanco, siendo los preferidos para la pesca de altura junto al apreciado marlin azul.

The adventure of sport fishing

T

he beauty of the sea surrounding the Canary Islands is just one of the many charms of this unique tourist destination; and sport fishing, like all water sports, benefits hugely from the Islands’ agreeable climate, allowing for practice all year round.

The sea is home to a large number of species for both angling and deep-sea fishing, though the ideal time for the latter falls between May and November. The highlight in this discipline is the Blue Marvel, promoting its unique markings, and released whenever the fish is fit to survive.

The Canaries’ passion for this sport is demonstrated each year when the Islands play host to various international contests, breaking records maintained by IGFA (International Game Fish Association). These record-breakers have featured multiple species, among them, the blue marlin, the needlefish, albacore tuna, big eye tuna, Atlantic bonito, white tuna, and many more. The possibilities offered by this sport have allowed it to flourish in recent years, developing slowly into a tourism sub-industry granting guests all the facilities and equipment for playing this sport year-round.

The different athletic ports of the Canary Islands gives visitors access to a wide variety of boats manned by marine sailors and equipped with all the fishing tools and devices you could need.

The deep-sea ecosystem home to the Canaries features both coastal and oceanic elements. One aspect of this, and which marks the changes between the seasons, is the emergence of distinctly tropical species, like bigeye, yellowfin, and striped tuna, as well as other warmwater fish like red and white tuna, the deep-sea fishers’ favourites, alongside the well-loved blue marlin.

n la isla de Tenerife, en el municipio de Buenavista del Norte, se encuentra Punta de Teno, una pequeña península formada por materiales volcánicos, situada en la plataforma costera de Teno Bajo. Desde allí es posible admirar los impresionantes Acantilados de Los Gigantes, la isla de La Gomera, el macizo de Teno y la plataforma de Teno Bajo. También se observa las diferencias entre el mar influenciado por las corrientes marinas del norte y por las del sur.

En esta península se localiza un faro, un pequeño y antiguo muelle, una plataforma que actúa de mirador, un embarcadero y diversas zonas de baño en forma de playas de arena, callados y zonas rocosas. En este lugar se puede disfrutar de una de las puestas de sol más bonitas de la isla de Tenerife.

En el mirador de Punta de Teno, las impresionantes vistas del Acantilado de Los Gigantes, de la vecina isla de La Gomera y el extenso mar que separa ambas Islas, invitan a disfrutar del lugar realizando ejercicios de respiración o meditación, yoga, pilates, etc., mientras se reciben los rayos de sol que habitualmente bañan este paraje la mayor parte del año.

Se puede continuar con un breve paseo por un sendero de la costa norte de este enclave para disfrutar del paisaje mientras la brisa marina proporciona frescor. A escasos metros del sendero existen unas zonas rocosas en las que, cuando el mar bate fuerte, se deposita agua que se va evaporando y dejando restos de sal marina. Estos restos, aunque no son muy abundantes, se pueden aprovechar para realizar baños de sal por el cuerpo. Se puede acabar tomando un baño de mar y sol en las diversas calas del extremo sur de la Punta de Teno donde el mar es más tranquilo y la vis-

tas de los Acantilados de Los Gigantes regalan un impresionante paisaje.

A Punta de Teno se accede por la carretera TF-445 desde Buenavista del Norte. Dicha carretera finaliza en la Punta de Teno, por lo que el regreso se realiza por la misma. En esta carretera se producen desprendimientos de piedras fundamentalmente en periodos de lluvia y viento, y aunque no está cerrada al tráfico sí que existen señales verticales que indican del riesgo existente y que si se accede se hace bajo la responsabilidad de cada uno.

A pesar de ello, éste es un lugar muy visitado tanto por la población como por turistas.

Los mejores meses para visitar Punta de Teno corresponden a la primavera, el verano y parte del otoño.

Cualquier momento del día es bueno para disfrutar de las cualidades de este lugar de Buenavista del Norte, aunque es más recomendable al atardecer o en las primeras de la mañana, porque hay menos visitantes y porque son los momentos más bonitos del día, especialmente la hora de la puesta de sol.

The peninsula is also home to a lighthouse, a small, old pier, a boardwalk granting seaside views, a port, and various bathing areas, sandy beaches, quiet dunes, and rocky coastline. It is also one of the most advantageous places to watch the sun set in the whole of Tenerife.

At Punta de Teno, the unbeatable views of Acantilados de Los Gigantes, of the island next-door, La Gomera, and of the wide-spanning sea that lies in their midst, invite guests to truly relax in the calm of the place, doing breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, or pilates, while taking in the rays of the sun that typically bathe this land most days of the year.

Visitors can then continue with a short walk along a footpath from the north coast and take in the landscape while the sea breeze blows in constant freshness. Just a few feet from the path are various rocky areas which, during high tide, receive all sorts of gifts from the animated sea. These remains, while not so great in quantity, can be used in small volumes for salt baths. Guests can finish off by taking a dip in the sea, under the sunshine, in the various coves at the southern edge of Punta de Teno, where the waters are calmer, and the views of los Acantilados de Los Gigantes and La Gomera island make for excellent natural scenery.

To Punta de Teno, take highway TF-445 from Buenavista del Norte; Punta de Teno marks the end of the road, so you’ll return the same way. Along the highway you’ll notice fragments of rocks broken off from rain and wind, and while the road is still open for traffic, several signs serve to indicate present danger, and nearing such sites must be at your own risk. Even so, these areas are some of the most visited spots on the island, by locals and tourists alike.

The best time to visit Punta de Teno is in the spring, summer, and beginning of fall. Any time of day is good for enjoying the natural qualities of Buenavista del Norte, although late afternoon or early morning is best, as there are fewer visitors around, and because they are truly the day’s most beautiful times, particularly the hour of sunset. Various active tourism agencies, like Teno Activo, Cardón Turismo y Medio Ambiente, and Patea tus Montes, hold regular activities in these areas, like guided tours, scuba diving, kayaking and snorkelling trips.
