BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN LEVEL 05 Module Code OUGD203 Module Title DESIGN PRODUCTION - DIGITAL END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION NAME Frankie Roberts 1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them? Working in a collaboration has definitely helped by ability to work with other designers. Unfortunately our design process was cut short for large duration of the brief, due to mitigating circumstances, however, the work we did manage to acheieve earlier on in this module proved that our idea development and design production skills complimented eachother nicely. During the Product, Range and Distribution brief I managed to get into the screenprinting studios to print the designs. It’s been a while since I last screenprinted and at first I didn’t feel too confident with the process of developing the screen etc. Once I got into the routine of printing I felt a lot more confident with the process and felt that some of the designs came out nice and crisp. Working on developing a range of t-shirts really helped with the design process. It definitely aided my idea generation allowing me to create a larger range of t-shirts for the Dimensions Festival. I really enjoyed creating a range of garments as I felt I was able to create designs in context. It’s an area I’d like to take into consideration for the future as I enjoyed both the development and the production process. 2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process? Screenprinting helped me neaten up my designs as I found myself paying more attention within the design development process. This has then made me realise the importance of finalising my deisgns as it really does make a difference to the professionalism & quality of the designs. Using my sketchbook for design development helped with the overall range as I found myself designing faster & more fluidly. In the future I’ll definitely pay more attention to this as I’ll be able to take the brief as far as I can. Within this module I took a single design and tried to get a range out of it rather then moving on to the next one so rapidly and this definitely helped with the t-shirt range for the dimensions festival. I learnt just playing around with angles, scale, perspective and colour really aided the design process. 3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these? I felt I was a lot more playful with layout within both briefs, but in particular the YCN brief. I thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with type, layout & image and it’s an area I’d like to continue to experiment with. This summer I plan to do some studio visits in Amsterdam and I think seeing some European design with help with experimentation.
