The Bay Tree Council for the Performing Arts presents its first production of the 2023-2024 season, “Doublewide, Texas Christmas” by Jones, Hope and Wooten and directed by Scotty Kennedy. The performance dates are Nov. 9-11 at 7:00 p.m. and Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Weatherford Centre in Red Bay. Tickets are on sale now. Go by our call between 2-4 p.m. to purchase or reserve tickets. For group sales, contact Beth Hammock at 256-6680045 for more information. Tickets are $10 each. The cast includes Holly McKinney, Emily Edmonson, Brittany Faris, Chris Perea, Hannan Haddock, Dominic Rogers, Anna Carol Porter, Jerri Mayo and Clint Sikes. The stage manager is Morgan Miller, and sound and lights will be handled by Theron Struzik. In this outrageously funny comedy, it’s Christmastime in the newest—and tiniest—town in Texas. And it’s beginning to look a lot like trouble in Doublewide. Not only are the trailer park residents dealing with the stress of the holiday season, but they’ve just discovered that Doublewide is being doublecrossed by the county. With their official incorporation papers in jeopardy, this band of eccentric Texans throw themselves into taking on the “Big Guys.” Determined to bolster their legitimacy, they first set their sights on the county-wide “Battle of the Mangers” competition. They conspire to win this smackdown with their “Nativity at the Alamo” entry by any means possible. In addition to that shaky undertaking and trying almost single-handedly to keep the new town afloat, Mayor Joveeta Crumpler has to wrangle her celebrityobsessed mother, her beleaguered brother who’s being bullied by a pack of vengeful raccoons and her demoralized best friend who’s at the end of her rope from dating every loser this side of the Rio Grande. To make matters worse, Joveeta finds herself increasingly wary of the newest resident, Patsy Price. Patsy, fresh out of the local mental institution, clearly has her own devious agenda and the county competition over in Fayro is just the place for her to settle an old score. By the time this fulltilt rocket ride of lunacy climaxes in a what-elsecan-go-wrong live television presentation, you’ll have doubled your Christmas spirit. So spend the Yuletide in Doublewide and let this hilarious Jones Hope Wooten Comedy make your Christmas merry and bright…because there’s no place like a good ol’ Texassized mobile home for the holidays.

We Say Editorial Staff
Every year our annual bridal issue of Franklin Living magazine is a popular edition, and believe it or not, we’re already planning the 2024 installment, which will come out in January. The 2023 bridal edition has a lot to live up to, so we’re wrapping up the holiday magazine – due out Nov. 15 – so we can turn our full attention to the first magazine of the new year. The time is now for 2023 brides to sign up to be a part of it. Among our usual great features and columns, we will feature our annual special section
spotlighting the beautiful weddings of Franklin County couples. We want to share your love story and help you immortalize it forever within the pages of Franklin Living magazine. Every year we are honored to be able to share the photos and special nuptial memories of a select number of local brides. Photographs are contributed by their talented photographers, and the brides and grooms give us all the lovely details of their wedding days for us to swoon over. We want to feature as many brides as we can, so make sure to tell your recently-wed friends to get in touch. We’re eager to include any brides who hail from Franklin County, especially if they held their weddings here. Deadline is the end of November to be featured in this very special edition.

I’m sad to see October go, though some of the temperatures felt more reminiscent of August than the traditional notion of how October should be. Clear blue skies, beautiful clouds and falling, changing leaves, pumpkins, festivals and games – there’s a lot to love. The month brought with it Homecoming parades and reunions, fall festivals, trunkor-treat events and Franklin County’s first Latino Heritage Festival. While attending the Alabama Renaissance Faire in Florence with
PHOTO BY MARÍA CAMP October brings a plentiful selection of reasons for celebration. friends, I happened to run into a couple of Franklin County folks, Brylee Stancil and Abigail McFall, festively attired. While I was waiting for the Phil Campbell Homecoming parade to start, a murmuration of birds caught my eye as they twisted and turned, flying in the distance in a dramatic, yet somehow
also subtle fashion. During another such moment, I was driving to my office when a large “flurry” of leaves floated and flew across the road in an elegant, yet dramatic fashion, twisting and twirling as I neared a light. They were powerful, yet purposeful in their meandering as they crossed the road for parts unknown, and it
was pleasant to be swept up in the movement of the unexpected travelers. I recently enjoyed a couple of pieces of candy acquired during the Russellville and Phil Campbell Homecoming parades. While I’m chasing photographs these days more often than candy, it’s still fun when it works out to have a piece or two of a longtime favorite. During the Latino celebration in downtown Russellville on Saturday, a friend and I enjoyed a funnel cake. I’d almost forgotten how good they are. I expect November will bring cooler temperatures onto the scene, a much-welcome change in my opinion. The big moments are exciting, but it’s also the moments in between when we often get a chance to enjoy the “little things” if we’re paying attention.
Garden Club of Alabama District I holds fall meeting She Says
Susie Hovater Malone Lifestyles Columnist
The Garden Club of Alabama held its District I Fall Meeting at the Weatherford Center in Red Bay on October 16. The Red Bay Garden Club served as the host club. Seventy members from North Alabama attended the meeting, including members from the Russellville Cultura Garden Club, the Waco Rural Garden Club and the Red Bay Garden Club. Carolyn Ellinger, District I GCA director, presided over the meeting. Charlene Fancher, mayor of Red Bay and member of the Red Bay Garden Club, presented the welcoming remarks to the “City of Hospitality.” State officers and chairmen, as well as former state presidents and district directors presented reports, as well
as recognizing National Life and Deep South life members and State life members of the Garden Clubs of the GCA. Mike Ezzell, of Rogersville, Ala., was the guest speaker. He is a retiree from the University of North Alabama where he worked in the environmental education department. He presented an interesting program about the native plants of Alabama. Alabama has some of the greatest native plant biodiversity in the United States with more than 3,000 different native plant species and ranks #9 in overall plant diversity in the United States. Alabama’s native plants are the backbone of the state’s ecosystem and were here long before the first human settlers. Ezell shared a video that highlighted some of the best-known native plants that deserve a place in Alabamians’ hearts and gardens. Some of these included the Climbing Aster, American Bluehearts, Fire Pink, Many-Flowered Grass Pink, Alabama Azalea,

Oak leaf Hydrangea and Eastern Columbine. “Every Alabamian should know that these plants are part of the state’s natural heritage, and they’re much better choices for your garden than non-natives,” Ezzell said. The business session included a roll call of clubs; approval of spring district minutes; treasurer’s report; reports from council and federation clubs; ways and means reports; approval of the 2023-2024
budget, as well as plans and projects for the 20232024 year. Weatherford Center caterers served a delicious luncheon. Several door prizes were given at the close of the meeting. Accolades went to the Red Bay Garden Club for their fantastic job hosting the fall district meeting, with special thanks extended to Mary Kathryn Wiggins and Diane Russell for their hard work and Missy Brandon of “Wild Flowers” for the beautiful flower decorations.

Football look ahead By Bart Moss For the FCT
Now at the end of the regular football season, three teams will continue for at least another week. Russellville secured the top spot in their region and will host a first round playoff game. Red Bay will be the fourth seed in their region and travel in the first round of the playoffs. Phil Campbell has all but earned a playoff bid as a four seed in the playoff because of a tie breaker rule. Tharptown and Vina will play their final games on Friday night. Phil Campbell (4-5) hosts Red Bay (5-4) Phil Campbell is coming off a big win over Clements to effectively put the Bobcats in the Class 3A playoffs as a four seed. Red Bay is coming off a loss to Hatton that put them as a fourth seed in the Class 2A playoffs. Both teams appear evenly matched. Phil Campbell won last year in double overtime 30-24. Russellville (8-1) at Athens (7-2) - The Golden Tigers go on the road this week against Class 6A Athens who only has lost two games this season – to Muscle Shoals and Hartselle. The Eagles and Russellville have played one common opponent - East Limestone. Both teams won that game with Athens having a slightly better outcome. Russellville lost last year 32-31. Tharptown (1-8) at Whitesburg Christian (1-8) - Tharptown and Whitesburg Christian come into their final game with pride on the line. Both teams have one win this season. Tharptown beat Phillips the second game of the year. Whitesburg lost the first eight games of the season before pulling out a win last week against Sand Rock 38-22. Whitesburg has scored 131 points this year and has given up 338. Tharptown lost last year 49-7. Vina (0-8) at Waterloo (0-8) - Vina and Waterloo both go into their final game without a win. Waterloo has been shutout five times, and Vina has been shutout four times. The Cougars have scored 68 points and have given up 399 points. The Red Devils have scored 44 points and given up 351 points. Vina lost last year 46-8.

Phil Campbell topples Clements for Homecoming win By Bart Moss For the FCT The Phil Campbell Bobcats may have put their most balanced game of the year together at just the right time to beat the Clements Colts 44-36 to celebrate Homecoming. The win also gave Phil Campbell the advantage in a tie breaker that could ostensibly put the Bobcats in the playoffs as a four seed. Braxton Mayfield and Hayden Wingo both had 100-yard rushing games. Mayfield carried the ball seven times for 110 yards and a touchdown. Wingo carried the ball nine times for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Wingo also caught a short pass which he took 61 yards for a touchdown. The Bobcats have some big defensive stops as well, but none bigger than the final play of Clements’ final drive. At midfield, on fourth and two, Bobcat linebacker Ethan
Hallman shot through the Clements line and stopped the Colts running back cold to force the turnover on downs and sealing the win for Phil Cambpell. After a scoreless first quarter, Clements got on the board first taking a 6-0 lead but the Bobcats responded to take an 8-6 lead on a Hayston Scott five-yard run and two point conversion. Clements fought back, scoring on the final play of the first half to take a 14-8 lead into the locker room at halftime. Phil Campbell tied the game 14-14 on the first possession of the second half on a 56-yard run by Mayfield. Clements didn’t take long to regain the lead, returning the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for the score. With the two point conversion, the Colts led 22-14. Phil Campbell took the lead, scoring two unanswered touchdowns in the later part of the third
quarter. Scott tied the game with a one-yard run to make the score 22-22. Wingo gave the Bobcats
the lead scoring from 22 yards out to make the score 30-22. Both teams exchanged
touchdowns throughout the fourth quarter.

Golden Tigers earn fourth-straight football region title with victory over Fairview By Brannon King For the FCT The Russellville Golden Tigers are football region champions for the fourth year in a row. RHS hosted the previously undefeated Fairview Aggies on Friday night, and the Golden Tigers won the highly-anticipated battle between ranked teams for the AHSAA Class 5A Region 8 crown by a score of 31-14. Russellville improved to 6-0 in region play with the victory, and the Golden Tigers are now 8-1 overall with a regular
season game at 6A Athens remaining on the schedule before RHS will host a first-round 5A playoff game. “I’m so proud of our guys,” Russellville head coach John Ritter said. “I thought we played well. We put in the work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to get where we have, and we’ve done it all year long. This senior class has been with us the whole time. From the time they were seventh graders, they have only known how we do things. To go out as seniors with four-straight region
championships, that’s an awesome thing.” The region titles are a testament to the work that’s done by all those who are involved. “It takes all 83 [players], it takes every coach, it takes the cheerleaders, the band. This is a whole program deal, this isn’t just a team accomplishment. What an awesome thing for our kids,” Ritter shared. After the RHS defense forced a punt on Fairview’s opening drive of the game, the Golden Tigers got onto the scoreboard first with a 37-yard Manny Martinez field goal
on the first Russellville offensive possession. An early second quarter interception by Russellville’s Richard Scott put an end to a Fairview drive and later, with less than two minutes to go in the first half, Malachi Duncan took a handoff and carried the ball 57 yards to put the Golden Tigers within striking distance for more points before the break. With seven seconds on the second quarter clock, Cam Phinizee took a direct snap from center and crossed the goal line for a two-yard touchdown
to give Russellville a 10-0 lead at the half. The lead for the Golden Tigers grew to 17-0 with 7:10 to go in the third period when quarterback Harrison Burch completed a 22-yard touchdown pass to Bralynn Vincent that was followed by the extra-point kick by Martinez who previously helped RHS with field position for a 70-yard punt. The next Fairview drive featured three consecutive pass completions, followed by a

PCHS volleyball finishes season with loss to Westbrook Christian.
Phil Campbell gets win at volleyball Super Regionals By Bart Moss For the FCT
Now in the third year of the volleyball program, Phil Campbell High School’s team has continued making progress. In their first year, they didn’t win a game, but they won five games in their second year, and, this year, they hit the 20-win mark and won the Class 3A Area 15 Super Regionals in Huntsville last week. The Phil Campbell Bobcats made it to the Class 3A volleyball Super
Regionals in Huntsville last week. The Bobcats were able to pick up a win in the first round of the North Super Regional before being eliminated in the second round. Phil Campbell beat Brindlee Mountain in the first round of the Class 3A Super Regional 3-1. The Bobcats fell behind early to Brindlee Mountain 15-9 in game one. The Bobcats battled back to tie the game at 18-18. Phil Campbell continued their run wining 10 out of the last
11 points to win 25-19. In game two, the Bobcats dug themselves in an early hole falling behind 8-2. Phil Campbell battled back to tie the game 15-15 but the Lions kept a slight lead from there, winning 25-22 to even up the match 1-1. In game three, Phil Campbell broke an 8-8 tie to take a 14-8 lead. The Bobcats pushed the lead to 23-14 before closing out the set 25-17. In game four, Phil Campbell once again found themselves in a big hold falling behind
9-4 and, once again, the Bobcats battled back to tie the game 9-9. Brindlee Mountain went on another roll taking a 16-11 lead. Phil Campbell wouldn’t be deterred tying the game again at 19-19. The Bobcats outscored the Lions 6-1 the rest of the way to win 25-20. Phil Campbell lost in the second round to Westbrook Christian 3-0. The Bobcats ended up in the top sixteen in the state with the lost to Westbrook. Belgreen also earned a
bid to the Class 1A Super Regionals. The Bulldogs lost 3-0 to Covenant Christian in the opening round ending their season. “These girls are resilient,” said Phil Campbell coach Julianna Taylor. “They’ve worked so hard to get to this point. It’s a blessing to coach such a great group of girls.” “I started this program from scratch three years ago,” said Amy Moss, who co-coaches with Taylor. “We have grown each year and continued to
get better. It started with a foundation of players who didn’t get a chance to experience this, but we wouldn’t be here without them and their devotion to volleyball at Phil Campbell High School. These girls have accomplished so much in such a short time and make me prouder each day.” Belgreen also earned a bid to the Class 1A Super Regionals. The Bulldogs lost 3-0 to Covenant Christian in the opening round, ending their season.

PC Clements scored first on a six-yard run to cut the Phil Campbell lead to 30-28. Wingo extended the Bobcats lead to 36-28 with a 53-yard run for a score. Clement battled back to tie the game 36-36. Phil Campbell’s Scott rolled to the right and threw back across his

final regular season games of the year. Both teams will play in the first round of the playoffs as four seeds. In other action around the county, Red Bay lost to Hatton 36-24, Jaxson Vinson had 156 yards rushing and two touchdowns to lead the Tigers and Keeton
Tigers running play and then a 33-yard touchdown pass to make the score 17-7. Russellville was able to regain momentum with a sack by JT Hill that was followed soon after by
Lanphear and Eli Farris led Red Bay defensively with nine tackles each. Tharptown lost to Falkville 46-6. Vina lost to Hackleburg 43-6. Tharptown will close their season with Whitesburg Christian. Vina will close their season at Waterloo.
Continued from page B1 a blocked punt by Zaye Hubbard. Two plays later, Phinizee scored on a sixyard run, and RHS was ahead 24-7 with 7:44 to go in the game. The final touchdown of
the night for the Golden Tigers was set up by a long return of a punt by Jah Williams. Cam Phinizee later punchedin a five-yard touchdown by absorbing the contact
of a Fairview defender on his way to the end zone. Fairview’s 9-yard touchdown pass with only 26 seconds remaining in the contest finished the scoring.
