TheAlabamaLaw EnforcementAgency reportedasingle-vehicle crasharound5:25p.m. Aug.26hasclaimed thelifeofMichaelE. Chamblee,67,ofHodges, whowasfatallyinjured whenthe2013Chevrolet Silveradohewasdriving lefttheroadwayand struckatree.Chamblee waspronounceddeceased atthescene. TheBayTreeCouncil forthePerforming ArtsinRedBayhas announcedits2024-2025 season.“TheCrazyQuilt Club,”byPatCook,will bepresentedNov.7-10, 2024,andwillbedirected byBrittanyFaris. TheFebruary productionwillbe “MoonOverBuffalo,”by KenLudwiganddirected byMarkRichardson,

ScottyKennedy,thecurator oftheRedBayMuseum,said thecityacquireda1939Illinois CentralRailroadcabooseabout fouryearsagowiththeintention ofdisplayingitinthecitypark.

Thecitypurchasedalot acrossthestreetfromtheRed BayMuseumandrelocatedan oldwoodenwatertowerthatwas onceusedtoprovidewaterfor steamlocomotives.

“BobTiffinwithTiffinMotor homesalwayswantedasteam locomotive,”Kennedysaid.“He thoughtitwouldbeneattohave one.”

Kennedysaidalocomotive builtin1923wasfoundin Pennsylvaniawhereithadbeen instoragefor67years.Hesaid Tiffinhadthelocomotiveand tenderrestoredinPennsylvania.

AlocomotiveisloweredtoitsfinalrestingspotTuesdayacrossfromtheRedBayMuseum.

ThetenderarrivedinRedBay onAug.19andthelocomotive arrivedAug.20.

“We’vebeenreadyfora while,”Kennedysaid.“It’sbeen quiteanordealgettingithere.It hadtocomethroughfivestates, andweneededpermitsfromall fivestates.”

Thelocomotivewasplacedon trackswiththeaidoftwolarge cranes,Kennedysaid.

Kennedysaidthewooden watertowerwillbeflankedby twosetsofrailroadtracks. Thecaboosewillbeononeset oftrackswhilethelocomotive

andtenderwillsitontheother setwiththewatertowerin between,hesaid.

AccordingtoColeman, theenginewasthelast steamlocomotivebought bytheEastBroadTop (EBT)andwasthemost powerful.

“Shehasbeeninthe MountUnionengine housesince1956and hassuccumbedtosome damageasaresultofthe roofleaking,”Coleman saidintherelease.“The roofwasrepairedin theearly1990sandthe buildingresealed.”

Despitethedamage, whichincludedsurface rustandgraffiti, Colemansaidthe68-ton locomotivewasrestored. Withthelocomotive, tenderandcabooseset inplaceatRedBay RailroadPark,Kennedy saidlandscapingcanbe addedandprotective coversbuiltoverthe

Hesaidthecaboose cost$12,000,theproperty $30,000and$45,000was spentremovingand rebuildingthewater tower.

NorthwestShoals CommunityCollege’s Patriotsathleticdirector TaylorFranksannounced July9thecollegewilladd women’svolleyballforthe 2025fallsemester. “Wearethrilledtoadd volleyballtoourcross countryteamsonthe PhilCampbellcampus,” saidNWSCCpresident Dr.JeffGoodwin.“We lookforwardtohosting matchesoncampusand haveourtremendous communitycomeand supportthem.” ThearrivalofPatriot volleyballonthePhil Campbellcampusthis

fallandofthegym’s renovationwillmarkthe completionofthefirst phaseofrenovations onthePhilCampbell

campus.Thegym renovationisscheduled tofinishbyDecemberof 2024.Thevolleyballteam willjointhefourother Patriotathleticteams –baseball,men’scross country,women’scross countryandsoftball,in theAlabamaCommunity CollegeConference.
