new opportunities, which are sure to be in great supply. No matter what has transpired this year, another year is on the horizon – 365 more days of opportunities. We wish you all the best for a Happy New Year.
Gingerbread cookies and houses are one of the many symbols of the holiday season, alongside Christmas trees and twinkling lights. In fact, few confections symbolize the holidays more so than gingerbread. Many a child (or a child at heart) has spent hours carefully trying to create decorative gingerbread houses. Although gingerbread recipes span various cultures, gingerbread houses originated in 16th century Germany. The fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel” helped solidify the popularity of gingerbread, which became part of Christmas traditions. Even though gingerbread houses can be fun to make, there’s no denying it can be exacting work — especially for those who strive for perfection. Prepackaged kits
attempt to take some of the guesswork out of the equation, but those who are crafting from scratch can employ these tips as they build their gingerbread houses. • Go for form and not flavor. Few gingerbread houses ever get eaten, so focus on finding a dough that will bake up rock hard as opposed to one that tastes good. • Get the right icing texture. Pastry artist Catherine Beddall says royal icing is the pre-
ferred “glue” to adhere gingerbread pieces. Beddall explains icing should be thick like peanut butter and not runny. • Mind the dough. Do not roll out the gingerbread dough too thin, or it may become brittle after being cooked. Always cut out shapes before the gingerbread is baked. Let the baked pieces sit overnight to cool completely before using them to build. • Patience is key. Allow the icing to dry for at least a couple of hours
after adhering each piece and before moving and handling the house, Beddall recommends, as well as working in stages so individual items can be decorated and allowed to dry. Then the walls can be put together, followed by the roof pieces. • Kids likely will need help. Children may not have the patience or steadiness to handle complete gingerbread construction. They can decorate the separate pieces of the house while the components are laying flat, which is easier for kids. Adults can do the main assembly later on. • Use a template. Freehanding may not be easy. Cut out templates using cardboard or posterboard for various gingerbread pieces. One of the most important tips is to have fun. Rather, enjoy the experience and the centuriesold tradition.
Retirees enjoy Christmas entertainment She Says Susie Hovater Malone Lifestyles Columnist The Franklin County Education Retirees Association members enjoyed the holiday season by participating in a Christmas covered dish luncheon at the Russellville First Methodist Church Ministry Center recently. The program, entitled “It’s Christmas Time Again,” featured the Russellville First Baptist Church youth praise band. They performed many holiday favorites, including “Joy to the World,” “Holy Night” and “Silent Night.” Garrett Booth, with RFBC Music and Education, directed the group. Gayle McAlister gave the Institute on the Christmas candy cane,
stating the candy cane has been a Christmas treat and tradition for so long that no one is completely sure of its origin. Legend has it that the candy cane dates to 1670, when the choirmaster at the Cologne Cathedral in Germany handed out sugar sticks to his young singers to keep them quiet during the Living Creche ceremony. But as the story goes, an Indiana candy maker wanted to make a candy that would be a witness to Christ, translating symbols from His birth, ministry and death into its design. The traditional white cane symbolizes the virgin birth and Jesus’ sinless nature. The candy’s hardness represents the firmness of God’s promises and the solid foundation of the church. The candy cane isn’t a cane at all, but a “J” for Jesus and a representation of the staff of the Good Shepherd. The candy cane maker then splashed the cane with red stripes as a reminder
of the blood Jesus shed for the salvation of the world. Just when and how candy canes got started is more uncertain than their popularity. 1.76 billion candy canes are produced in the United States annually. The Franklin County Retirees’ projects for this year included donating $100 to the AERA food bank in Huntsville, which also benefits our county, and supporting the Homeless Coalition of Franklin County. Libby Daniels reported the Homeless Coalition needs Bibles for the backpacks

that are given out. The Franklin County Retirees Association approved a donation of $100 for the Bibles. President Sandy Gibson reported the Alabama legislative session starts Feb. 6, 2024. Members were reminded that the advocacy training in Cullman will be held Jan. 17, 2024. For the closing, Sandy Gibson and Libby Daniels read a fun skit called “Well It Does Sound Threatening” written by Bernie Delinsky about Santa Claus’ 911 experiences. Everyone was wished a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

CONTRIBUTED Volunteers shop for toys for the annual toy drive.
RFD, RPD annual toy drive finishes By María Camp maria.camp@ franklincountytimes.com Along with help from students and others in the community, the annual toy
drive lead by the Russellville Fire Department and Russellville Police Department has completed another year. “We took applications later than we have in the
past and received more than we have in the last few years,” explained. RFD’s Lt. Andy DeVaney. “Although we don’t see the children on Christmas, because of the generosity of our local
businesses, organizations and citizens, I know a lot of children will have a smile on their face on Christmas morning.” DeVaney said he would like to thank Sgt. Brandi
Whitely with RPD for a lot of help with the paperwork, as well as the rest of the RFD and their families for a lot of hours of work shopping, bagging and distributing toys.
“We appreciate all our local support. This year, we helped just over 250 children,” he added, noting it’s all about coming together as a community to make a difference.”

Progress 2024 Progress 2024 will turn the spotlight on perhaps the most influential segment of our society – heroes who rarely receive the honor and gratitude they deserve: our veterans and service members. With stories profiling veterans across Franklin County, as well as the memorials that honor these brave men and women, this year's Progress edition is certain to be meaningful. This edition will also feature pieces on the local American Legion and VFW as well as the Russellville High School JROTC. This edition will salute those men and women in uniform who have made not only Franklin County, but our country, what it is today.
