Steam locomotivetobedelivered to Red Bay
By Staff Reports
On June 10,2024, a 1923 restored steam locomotive engineand tinder will be delivered to the Red Bay Railroad Park in Red Bay, Ala. The exact time is notknown TheRed BayMuseum and the City of Red Bay haveworked together to establish aRailroad Park in Red Bay, directly across from theRed Bay Museum.
Acaboose was donated to themuseum, which started the idea of establishing apark. It wasthen decided to move theoriginal wooden water tower stillstanding from the early 1900s to the
park. The towerwas used to supply water to the steam locomotive engines that came through town
BobTiffin, former owner of TiffinMotorhomes, has longwanted asteam locomotive, and one was
found in Mt. Union, Penn., that had beenstored in awarehouse for around 67 years. He purchased the locomotive, and the restoration has taken more than two years.
Thelocomotive was built in March 1923 and built forEast Broad Top (EBT) by Baldwyn and is acoal-fired steam engine.
Third #3 was the last steam locomotive bought by theEBT and also the mostpowerful. Sheacted as theprimary switcher in Mount Union, yielding to #6 only when she required servicing. She was also the last locomotive to run in common carrier operation, moving the
last of thePRR cars to theirinterchange. She has been on theMount Union Engine house since 1956 and has succumbed to some damage as a resultofthe roof leaking. Local people are upset about the locomotive and tinderleaving their town, since they think it is part of their local history, although no one has offered to repairor restore it in more than 66 years. Security will have to be providedwhen it is moved in Pennsylvania. When it is delivered to Red Bay,the streetswill be blocked off andatleast two large cranes will be on hand to unload the locomotiveand tinder.

Staff
We’re going to make an assumption. We’re going to assume most of you readingthis rightnow arevery food secure.
You probably ate a meal recently– breakfast, lunch or dinner. You areprobably anticipating, with astrong degree of certainty, your next meal. If youget hungry betweenmeals, you probably haveaccess to asnack. If you don’t like the food you have on hand at yourhomeor office, you canprobably jumpinyour car andrun to the grocery store or a localrestaurant andpurchase whatever food is tempting your taste buds at the moment.
This is notreality for everyone, though.
Thesummercan be an especially challenging time, food-wise, for a large portion of ourpopulation: ourlocal children
See, many –ifnot most –local children receive free breakfast andlunch duringthe school year. The meals provided by our school systems’child nutrition departments ensure each student is receiving nutritious, fill-
ing plates thatkeep them going throughout the day. These mealsmustbea godsend particularly for families strugglingfinancially. We’reall feeling the pinch at the grocery store to some extent, andwhen your budget is already tight, anyuptick in the price of foodcan be atrigger for concern. Meals served by our schools take someofthat pressure off parents who arecarefully stretching each dollar as far as it willgo.
Then comes thatsummer break. While for many it’s awelcome opportunity to soak up long sunny days, take family vacations, enjoy holidays together and shed afew responsibilities, for others it’s aseason of suddenlyhaving children home all day, every day–ravenouschildrenwho are constantly snacking, eating everything in sight. Allthose outdoor activities, the fun in the sun, mean children are working up big appetites –and parents are on the hook for two extra mealsplus snacks, five extra days per week.
That’s why Franklin County Schools’summer meal programissoneeded.
Meals willbeserved at Belgreen, East Franklin, Phil Campbell, Red Bay, Tharptown and VinaMondaythrough Thursday,withbreak-
fast from 7:30-9:30 a.m. andlunch from 10 a.m. to noon for much of the summer: June 5-8, 12-15, 20–22 and26-29 andJuly 10-13 and17-20.
All meals arefreeand served to children ages 0-18. Students do not havetoattend aFranklin County school to participate.
According to Break fora Plate, whichisthe federally-funded, stateadministered Summer Food Service Program through whichthe meals are provided, the stats tell the story: •1 in 5U.S. children lack enough nutritious food.
•1 in 4Alabama children live in families with food hardships
•Nearly 60 percent of Alabama publicschool children eatfree/reduced school lunches
•Nationally, more
than10million children
–nearly1 in 7–lived in poverty in 2019.
•The childpoverty rate is 1.5 times thatfor adults 18-64 andadults 65 andolder
•Alabama is the nation’ssixthpoorest state, with 300,000 children livinginpoverty.
•From 2010-2020, Alabama lowered the food insecurity rate by 3percent.
•The numberoforganizations providingchildren’s meal locations tripledacrossthe state from 2014 to 2020.
We’re thankful this avenue is available to local childrensonoone goes hungry this summer. Additionally, anumber of Russellville students will benefit from RCS’ program that provides mealsfor students who arealready on campusfor summeractivities
