TharptownHigh School’srocketry teamplacedsecond intheInternational RocketryChallengeat theFarnborough Air Showheldoutside afew daysago.Theycompeted againstthreeteamstotal, fromJapan,Franceand theUnitedKingdom. Inordertomakeitto thatpoint,theysecured firstplaceinthenation intheannualAmerican RocketryChallengein ThePlains,VA,where theytookhome$20,000for theirengineeringskill, alsowinning$1,000forthe schoolinrecognitionofthe team’saccomplishments. Theteamscoredsecond inthenationinthe competitionlastyear.

“Wearesothankful fortheopportunityto represent theUnited States,”said the team’s sponsor,AreannaOrozco. “I am soproud of every singlestudentandallthe hard worktheyhaveput in. Iamsoincredibly proud of thesekids.” Orozcosaidthat while they didn’tgetthe result theyhoped for, theteam’s performancewastop notch.“Winningsecond placeisoneofthosethings thatabsolutelybreaks yourheartbutgivesyou thatmotivationtogetup, dustyourselfoff,andtry again,”sheexplained.“I hopetheyknowthatthere wasn’tanythingtheycould havedonetochangethe results.Theyperformed sowell.Rocketsjustare unluckysometimes.We havelearned somuch from thistripandare excitedto

applyitnextyear.”

Tharptown High School hassent ateamtothe national finalssixtimes sincetheprogramstarted in 2018. TharptownHigh Schoolhas now placed inthetop10fourtimes, including asecond-place finishin2023.

Theteamismentored byAndrewHeath,who wastheteamcaptain oftheRussellville City Schoolsteamthat wontheInternational Rocketry Challengein 2015.“They madeallthe right preparations,”Heath explained, “butthere is alwayssome level of uncertainty. their launch andthewinningteamwere within10points ofeach other.”

Duarte,as wellasthird year teammemberKylee Beard, alongwithAngie Chavez, alsoinherthird year on theteam, senior AdrionnaAshley,junior Isabella Hall,thirdyear memberandupcoming college freshmanJessie Mitchell and firstyear teammember Frank Gutierrez. Mitchell described hisexperience at the internationalcompetition as “verysurreal.”

“Itook full advantage of thiswonderfulopportunity, tolearnnewthings,meet newpeople,spendtime withmyamazing team, see newthings andgainnew experiences,”heexplained. “Asmany timesasI’ve dreamed aboutit, Inever thoughtthatoursmall highschoolwouldactually betheteamtobestanding on stagein Farnborough.

Maybenotwithfirst place like we hadhopedand worked hard for,but in second,teachingme that sometimesnomatter how hardyouwork,howgood you are,orhowbadyou wantit,it doesn’talwaysgo exactlyasyou’dimagine. There’salways someone else just asgoodorbetter, andwhen itcomes down toequalcompetition,it’s muchmore interesting and makes foracloser competition. I’m barely skimmingthe surfaceof theenjoyment, lessonsand knowledgegainedon this trip.This was aonceina lifetime experienceforme, and Iwouldn’thavegiven upanything to change the outcome,or spendit with anyonedifferently.”

The Space and Rocket Centerin Huntsvillehosted them for aspecialdayof recognitionand learning

beforetheydepartedfor internationalcompetition. Amongtheactivities, they touredseveralarea facilitieswhereworkwas beingdoneon rocket parts. They got the opportunity to speak withengineerswhile thereand to havespecial tours.

“We were able to go into acoupleof theNASA buildingsand meet with people,”Orozcosaid.“The kidshad afantastic day. Wehaveeight memberson theteam this year.” Orozcosaid 40 percent of the scoreatthe internationalcompetition wasbasedon theteam making apresentation, something they practiced in frontofanaudienceas partof theirspecialdayof Space and Rocket Center activities.

“Weareverypleasedto announceKaraShelnutt asExecutiveDirectorand

have been veryimpressed withherinitiativeand enthusiasminjust the first fewweeksonthe job,” saidMitchMcKinney, RussellvilleMainStreet’s boardpresident. Shelnuttgraduated summacumlaudewith anAssociate of Arts degreeinBusiness Fundamentalsfromthe University ofPhoenix. She is currently pursuing aBachelorofSciencein Business.Shelnutt leavesa professionalcareerwiththe National HighwayTraffic

SafetyAdministration. Volunteerexperience ispart ofher background, andDowntownRussellville is avolunteer-lednonprofit organization.Other experienceincludes workingwiththeJunior LeagueoftheShoals, providingdisasterrelief in FranklinCounty, participatinginthe Hydrate theHomeless initiative,leadingyouth groups,volunteeringat animal shelters,being aBig SisterintheBigBrothers/ BigSistersprogramand

servingontheboardof anewchurch plant in RussellvillefortheChurch of Godof Prophecy,where she is amember.

“Her background in businessanddedication to volunteerwork havealready proved advantageousaswe articulate ourvision and execute astrategicplan,” McKinney said. Shehas beenmarriedfor sixyearsto JoshShelnutt, andtheyhave ablended family.Inher freetime, sheenjoyscampingwith

herfamily, (including twostandard poodles), watchingher daughters performathalftimeon Fridaynightsand leading aladies’ Biblestudy. Shelnuttsharedher enthusiasm fortheworkto come.

“Towardtheend ofJune,webuilt tworockets,”Orozco explained,“oneusing fiberglassfinsandone usingwoodfins.When wegotothenational competition,weusually takeonethathaswooden finsbecausethat’swhat they’reusedtousing,but theissuewithwoodisthat itbreaksveryeasilyand it’snotasaerodynamic, butit’s alittlebitlighter thanfiberglass.” Shesaidtheteam decidedtogowith fiberglassforitshigher durability, adecision madeonedayaftera practicelaunchwhere woodenfinsresultedin lessthanstellarresults uponimpact.

“Wewereabletofix thefiberglassfinseasily becausefiberglassis sturdier,”Orozcoadded.

NWSCC added Barbering asanoption under the Salon and Spa Program forthe 2024 springsemester.Anthony Jordan serves as the instructor.“Heisdoing agreat job growingthe program and working with our students,”said Grissom.“It’sobviousthat

ningto aMondayevening, whenhe,alongwithhis groupof27otherchildren, graduated,helearned moreabout asubjectthat alreadyinterestedhim. Itwasanexperiencehe describedas“funand interestingbutalsochallenging.”

“Hewasalreadylookingatbeing anengineer,”Fisher’smom,Tina Fisher,explained,adding

that,despite hisage,“he’s gotbig dreamsanyway.” Shesaid thefamily hadbeen totheSpaceand Rocket Centerbefore,but thisrepresented her son’s firstopportunitytoattend acamplike this.“Heloved it,” sheadded. “Histeacher,NinaJackson, showed me aflyerabout the scholarshipforthecamp,and weappliedforit.” Fishersaidwhathe

liked aboutcoding was that“itwaskind ofa differentwaytolookat things.”Althoughhe enjoyedfinding outall about it, he saiditwas alsochallengingbecause of“howlong it could be andhowlong it couldget.”

“Wereadthingsin Englishorwhatever languageyou speak,and the

computerreads thingsin onesandzeroesincoding languages,” Fishercontinued.“Say Iwanteda computerto open afile,I would havetouse acodinglanguage,oronesand zeroes, totell it whatto do.”

Inaddition to coding, they alsolearnedabout malware.

“In the evenings,we learned aboutmalware,

whichis maliciouscyber threats, and in themornings, welearnedallabout coding anddifferent waysto codeand decode things,” Fisher explained, “and Ithinkit wasthe first daywelearnedabout onesand zeroes (binary coding)andhow todecode allthat.Iwouldloveto learnmoreabout it and maybe implement itinto my future.”
