Underclassmen who are going to have to play big roles include Cam Phini zee, Malachi Duncan, Zaye Eggleston and Mike Young. “The key to us offensively is, how do we handle other people’s success and what’s our attitude when we don’t get the ball as much as we want to?” Ritter explained. “If we handle things the right way, I think we can be very dynamic on offense.”Animportant part of any football team is the offensive line, and Russell ville also has leaders up front. “Grayson Murray is a three-year starter; Tait Barnes is a two-year starter; Hank Car tee will be starting for his second year; and we’ve shifted Tilmon Baker from tight end to tackle, and he’s provided a lot of stability to the offensive line,” Rit ter shared. “I think he brings an element of athleticism – he’s nasty, and he’s what you want in an offensive lineman.”
The defense will be led this year by new coordinator Michael Statom. “Mar tin Tomas and Malachi Duncan come back at the linebacker spots, and those guys played as 10th-graders,” Ritter said. “Devin Green has played a ton at multi ple positions and has found a home at inside linebacker. Up front, we return all three starters – Jerrin Jackson, Mat thew James and Junior Baltazar. We’ve moved River Richardson and with JT Hill and Devin Jones; they are the group that round out the six.”
“Everybody knows about TJ King, Conner Warhurst and Randall John son,” Ritter said. “Bralynn Vincent is a guy we expect to have a great year. Banks Langston is back from injury, and we expect a lot of things from him. Harrison Burch is an unproven guy who is going to come in at quarterback, and he’s looked really good over the summer.
Head coach John Ritter and his coaching staff are prepared for the coming season.
On the offensive side of the line of scrimmage, Russellville returns a group of players who have already produced results on Friday nights. They will look to continue having success and will be joined by some new faces in key places.
he Russellville Golden Tigers enter the 2022 football season looking to win a region title for the third con secutive year. Head coach John Ritter is entering his fifth season at RHS, and the Golden Tigers have a good mix of return ing players and talented young athletes working to keep the wins coming. “It was a short summer, but it was a good summer,” Ritter said of the pre-sea son preparation time. “I thought we had great attendance; I thought our guys worked hard; and I thought we had a very successful summer. Hopefully that will bleed over into a successful fall.”
WORK TO KEEP REGION TITLE STREAK ALIVE
The defensive unit should also be sound in the secondary. “Taylor Crump ton is back, and Warhurst is back,” Rit ter said. “Jah Williams is going to step in at safety with Gunner Sappington and Richard Scott. All three of those guys will be competing for playing time, and Jah has had an outstanding summer.

“Taylor Crumpton returns at cor ner, and we have Cash Crumpton and Michael Scofield battling for the other spot,” Ritter added. “I think we have sev en starters back on defense that played in all 12 games, which is huge. Last year, those seven starters were first-year starters.“We have a lot of expectations on that side of the ball to continue being really good and physical on defense like we’veRHSbeen.”will be in Class 5A, Region 8, with Ardmore, Brewer, East Limestone, Fairview, Lawrence County and West Point.

“We have had a good solid group of kids out here working hard this sum mer,” said Hamilton. “I’m excited, and they seem excited.
“We want to take this group that has been working and add to our numbers once school gets started to make some thing special happen at Tharptown.”
One of Hamilton’s main points of emphasis will be to put in a basic system as quickly as possible and get players out to “Weplay.don’t have a lot of time,” said Hamilton. “We have to get a lot done between now and Aug. 19, when we play Shoals Christian. We are going to keep it simple and execute. “I’ve been working hard to get some guys out to play that have been walking the halls. We’ve got some guys who need to play football. I’ve seen them. We just have to get them out here.”
Hamilton is enthusiastic and full of energy – something he hopes rubs off on his team and the school.
“I want guys to want to play football. I want the school and community to get fired up about Friday nights,” Hamilton said. “There is nothing better than those Friday night lights, the smell of the cut grass and the goosebumps leading up to a high school football game. Nothing else can replicate it. “It will be here before you know it,” added Hamilton. “I can’t wait.”
After opening against Shoals Chris tian, the Wildcats will play Phillips, Tan ner, Hatton, Lexington, Cherokee, Red Bay, Sheffield, Falkville, and Whites burg“ThereChristian.areno easy wins,” said Ham ilton. “We have to go out there every week and earn it. We want to win, and we want teams to take us seriously.”

Every year is a different year. Players graduate, and new ones take their place. Many coaches try to stick with the same scheme, sometimes trying to fit a round peg into a square hole. Kevin Barnwell takes a different approach at Phil Campbell.“Wechange every year based on our personnel,” said Barnwell. “That’s what the offseason has been about for us. We are trying to find an identity on the offensive side of the ball and on the defensive side as well.”Last year
Phil Campbell’s identity was three yards and a cloud of dust. This year it might be different.

The Bobcats return most of their core group of players. That experience will bring“Barringleadership.injuries, we have multiple players that fit into different roles and will make some big plays for us on offense,” said OneBarnwell.thing Barnwell said his team is going to have to do is play tough and stand toe-to-toe with some talented teams. The Bobcats have one the most interesting schedules they have had in recent years –and it’sThetough.Bobcats open on the road with a rivalry game at Hackleburg. The Bob cats and Panthers have played 86 times – consecutively since 1949. That’s 73 years straight. The Phil Campbell coach has been on both sides of this game: Barnwell played at Hackleburg, where he graduated in 1989, and now he is the coach at Phil Campbell. “When I was growing up I looked for ward to two games: Alabama versus Au burn and Hackleburg versus Phil Camp bell,” said Barnwell. “There is so much crossover between families that everyone looks forward to this game every year.”
PHIL CAMPBELL BOBCATS RALLY AROUND CHANGE IN GAME PLAN
“When I first got here, Phil Campbell and Red Bay played near the beginning of the season,” said Barnwell. “I wanted to move the game to the end because all the kids were focused on was that game. We were not able to work it out. I’m glad we got back, and it will be a good game to close out the regularSandwichedseason.”in between those two games are Lamar County, Elkmont, Col bert County, Carbon Hill, Lauderdale County, Mars Hill, Colbert Heights and Clements.“Thisis not an easy region,” said Barn well. “It might be the toughest region in the state. Not only do we have to play some traditionally strong teams in Lauderdale County and Colbert Heights, we’ve added a blue-blood traditional power in Colbert County and Mars Hill, who might be one of the best team in the state in any classi fication.”
“We were a little old school last year,” said Barnwell. “This year I feel like we will be able to throw the ball and vertically challenge some people.”
Phil Campbell renews a long-standing rivalry with Red Bay at the end of the reg ular season this year. The two teams have played each other 79 times but they haven’t faced off in a few years.

Red Bay opens the season against Hamilton Aug. 19. After an open week the next week, the Tigers will play nine straight games: Lexington, Sheffield, Hack leburg, Belmont, Tharptown, Falkville, Tanner, Hatton and Phil Campbell. Noticeably absent from the schedule is Colbert County and Mars Hill. Both teams moved up to Class 3A. “We are in a tough region,” said Childers. “No one is going to step in that schedule and replace Mars Hill, but Tanner is every bit as good as Colbert County, and getting Phil Campbell back on the schedule will be good for both teams. You won’t have to motivate either group to get ready for that last game of the regular season.”

H eath Childers is entering his sec ond year as the head coach of the Red Bay Tigers, and he said he likes where his team is at and where they are “Theheaded.biggest difference from last year to this year is the players know what to expect from me and I know what to expect from them. They are working hard and making a lot of progress,” said Childers. Childers said for his team to im prove off of a 2-8 season in 2021, they will have to protect the football and play with toughness.“Ballsecurity has been a main point of emphasis,” Childers explained.
This past season Red Bay was -22 in turnovers. “You are not going to win ball games turning the ball over that much,” said Childers. “I don’t care who you are.”
Toughness is the other trait Childers has been trying to instill in his team through the offseason. “The work outs this summer have not been easy,” Childers said. “They’ve put in the work. They are a tough group of kids. Football is a tough sport for tough guys.” Defensively, Red Bay will focus on stopping opposing run games. “We have to get physical up front and stop the run,” said Childers. “If a team can just hand the ball off and run up the middle, we are going to have a hard time.” Red Bay was a sophomore-heavy team this past year. That experience –and a year under Childers’ system –give the coach hope of an improved season. “We have a lot of good leaders on this team,” Childers said. “If we stay healthy, we have a chance to be pretty good. “We are like everyone else. We are struggling with numbers. We can’t afford to lose a lot of guys to injury.”
