Q&A WITH COACH JOHN RITTER There is a sense of excitement around the football program at Russellville High School as the Golden Tigers go into the 2018 season. New head coach John Ritter enters his first season at RHS, and he has brought in a handful of new assistants to join forces with many coaches that have remained from the previous Russellville staff to make up an impressive group.

AKING A LOOK AT RUSSELLVILLE’S OFFENSE

The offense will look for ways to get the ball into the hands of playmakers that feature some familiar faces that are back on the Russellville team. Senior Lucas McNutt returns to the football field at quarterback after taking time away from the sport to concentrate on basketball and golf. In the backfield, Zaye Boyd, who had a big season as a Golden Tiger in 2016, returns to the team after a year at Lawrence County High School. KJ Hamilton is also back in black and gold after a season at Tharptown. Devin Buckhalter will be a key factor on offense as he returns to football action after missing the 2017 season because of an injury in Russellville’s jamboree game last year. The Russellville head coach said the team was showing a lot of promise during early fall practice. “Offensively, we feel good about the guys that we’re going to put on the field; we don’t have a ton of depth,” Ritter said. “We’ve got Lucas McNutt and Gabe Amick battling one and two for quarterback. Zaye Boyd, Austin Ashley and KJ Hamilton are front runners at running back. There’s some different things that we’re going to do package-wise to get a bunch of athletes on the field. “O-line, we feel good about what we’ve got; we’re just very thin.”

EFENSE BOASTS SLATE OF TALENT

On the defensive side of the ball, the Golden Tigers have an attacking style of play and should be ready to strike when the opponent has the ball. “Defensively, we feel like that could be a bright spot for us as long as we do what we’re supposed to do,” Ritter said. “We have to continue to learn how to play hard and play to the expectation that we set for ourselves.” When it comes to who has caught his attention so far on defense, Ritter has no shortage of names in mind – which is always a good sign for success. Nate Green and Nathan Brockway, outside linebackers, showed their outstanding skill during summer action, and Ritter also mentioned Caden Watts, Ashaad Williams and Donald Ramson in the secondary and Anthony Ruiz, Angel Moreno and Andres Tomas have practiced well up front. “We have 12 or 13 guys that we feel like can play at a high level for us out there, if they learn to do what they’re supposed to do and play at a high level all of the time,” Ritter said.

EW REGION BRINGS NEW OPPONENTS

The schedule will also be a mix of new and old this season. Russellville remains in 5A this year after AHSAA reclassification but will move to Region 7 instead of the usual Region 8. The new region opponents will be Corner, Hayden, West Point, Hamilton, Jasper and Dora, while Lawrence County and Russellville will continue to share the same region.

RED BAY HIGH SCHOOL TIGERS

Class 2A, Region 7 Q&A by BART MOSS Photos courtesy of SCOTTY KENNEDY

Q&A WITH COACH MICHAEL JACKSON The Red Bay Tigers are a perennial playoff contender. Coach Michael Jackson is entering his 17th year as a head coach and has a career record of 104-73. He is starting his fifth year at Red Bay, where he is 33-11. The Tigers remained in Class 2A and will compete in Region 7, which includes Addison, Colbert County, Hatton, Sheffield, Tanner and Tharptown. The Tigers’ non-region contests will include Colbert Heights, Phil Campbell, Belmont and Wilson.

Head Coach Michael Jackson 14

Q:

YOU ARE BY FAR THE VETERAN COACH IN FRANKLIN COUNTY. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR PROGRAM AFTER FOUR YEARS AT RED BAY? The kids have responded well this summer. We have a bunch of younger kids getting involved, and that is going to be big for us. We have had two straight small senior classes. These younger guys have had to play and mature a lot. They have been exposed to the varsity level at a young age, and I expect to see a lot of improvement from them this year. I’m excited to see what they will do.

A:

Q:

TALK ABOUT YOUR OFFENSE AND THREE-YEAR STARTING QUARTERBACK KOLBY BRAGWELL.

Kolby Bragwell will be the centerpiece of our offense. He is the first three-year starting quarterback I’ve had in my 17 years as a head coach. His leadership ability and skillset are as good as any in North Alabama. Elijah Ingle is another leader on our team. He will anchor our offensive line. He is also a three-year starter, and I think he is one of the best in North Alabama. Some other key players on our offense will be Jalen Vinson at wide receiver, Colbie King at tailback and Mason Holt at wide receiver. We have Alex Kennedy and Cam McKinney playing tight end and H-back. They are the first true tight ends I have had where they can both catch the ball and block. It’s usually one or the other, but they can do both.

A:

s r e g i T y s! a B d eam e R k T c a u e L r d A o l Go To Al &

Q:

HOW WILL YOU STACK UP DEFENSIVELY?

Our defense will be led by Alex Kennedy and Cam McKinney. They are our two leading tacklers. They are two big and quick guys. Alex weights 214 pounds and Cam 245. They will give folks fits. Ingle will also be a force up front. We have Logan Scott at 210 pounds at defensive end and Jake Pounds and Hunter Burks at outside linebacker. Gavin Edgeman will play some inside linebacker. Gavin Nichols and Dakota Wilson will play on the defensive line. ColynHumphres, Jalen Vinson and Colby Bragwell will be in the secondary.

A:

Setting High Standards www.tiffinmotorhomes.com

Q:

WITH THE CHANGE IN CLASSIFICATIONS, YOUR SCHEDULE GOT A BIT TOUGHER DIDN’T IT?

Yes, it did. I think our region is the toughest region in north Alabama. We have a lot of traditional footballwinning programs in Addison, Colbert County, Sheffield and Tanner. Hatton was young last year, and they will be tough this year. We typically open with Colbert Heights, and they are always a tough matchup. Phil Campbell is our cross-county rival, and we have them early this year – the second game. Belmont is our big state-line rival, and we close with Wilson.

A:

Q:

WHAT IS ONE THING THAT DEFINES THIS TEAM SO FAR?

Win the day. That’s our slogan for the year. What that means is work hard to win everything you do at the end of each day. Do everything with energy and focus on that goal of winning the day every day.

Q&A WITH COACH KEVIN BARNWELL The Phil Campbell Bobcats will be led by a new head coach this year in Kevin Barnwell. This will be Barnwell’s first stint as a head coach. He comes to Phil Campbell from Russellville, where he served as an assistant.Barnwell’s Bobcats will be making the leap from Class 2A to Class 3A, which brings major schedule changes. The Bobcats will compete in 3A Region 8, which includes Clements, Colbert Heights, East Lawrence, Lauderdale County, Lexington and Westminister Christian. Q:

YOU WERE HIRED TO TAKE OVER THE PHIL CAMPBELL PROGRAM LAST SPRING, AND THIS IS YOUR FIRST HEAD COACHING JOB.WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED IN SUCH A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME?

Q:

WHAT KIND OF OFFENSE CAN FANS EXPECT UNDER YOUR LEADERSHIP?

We are going to focus on being a team.We are not going to single anyone out because it is going to take I have learned there is a lot of responsibility that goes everyone to make it work.We are going to make our offense with being a head coach. There is a lot that goes with as balanced as possible. It will be flexible, and we will try to it.It’s not just coaching and getting ready for games. You are get the ball into as many hands as possible to keep defenses in charge of finances, fundraising, keeping up the grounds on their toes. We are going to keep it simple for us as coaches to call and managing personalities. The one big thing I’ve learned quickly is you have to the play and for the players to understand the plays. We delegate or you won’t get anything done. You have to trust the will run a spread offensive system, similar to the old Tony people you have around you to make it happen. We have that Franklin offense that Coach Goodwin and Coach Swindoll here. We have a great staff. It’s been a very positive beginning. ran at Russellville.

Q:

WHAT ABOUT ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL?

We will run out of multiple formations, 3-4 and 4-man front, things like that. Other than spring, we haven’t had much of a chance to work on the physicality of defense. We want our guys to be aggressive and fly to the ball but use correct techniques as well.We are a work in progress. We won’t get there overnight, but we will get there. We have been putting an emphasis on competing – learning how to be competitive. We don’t want to accept losing or being just good enough. We want to have fun, and the best way to have fun is to compete right up until the end and cross the finish line.We are going to get tough. Kids are getting used to being coached hard.I’m not sure what they expected, but we are really pushing them, and they are responding. They know we are coaching them to get to another level.

Q:

WHAT IS SOMETHING UNIQUE YOU HAVE LEARNED ABOUT YOUR TEAM IN A SHORT TIMEFRAME?

We have a core group that is eager to compete and eager to get better. There is a good nucleus here.We have

A:

some good older guys, but we have some younger guys we are going to rely on to be leaders and they are stepping up.We ask a lot of each other, and the accountability is where these guys come in.They hold their teammates accountable and to a high standard. We are definitely making steps in the right direction.

Q&A WITH COACH KEVIN LACEY The Tharptown Wildcats enter their third year under the leadership of Kevin Lacey. It will be a gut-check year for the Wildcats as they move from Class 1A to one of the toughest Class 2A regions in the state. Q:

THARPTOWN BARELY CROSSED THE THRESHOLD FOR MOVING UP A CLASSIFICATION. IT TOOK YOUR SCHEDULE TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL.

No doubt about it. We went from playing in a middleof-the-road 1A region to one of the toughest 2A regions in the state. There are a lot of schools in this region with winning traditions. It’s definitely going to be a challenge for us physically and mentally. We have to be prepared each week for tough, physical football teams with speed and quickness. It will be a test of our willingness to stand up man-to-man and compete. I’m looking for our players to test themselves. If they can stand up each week and prepare mentally and physically for tough competition and not quit, in the end they will be better men.

A:

Q:

TALK ABOUT YOUR OFFENSIVE PERSONNEL.

We have Carson Petree returning as our starting quarterback. He has a lot of experience under fire and he is a solid leader for us. We have Luis Macia at running back; he’s raw but very quick and fast. He will make some people miss tackles. Yovani Gomez returns as a wide receiver. Yovani is small but quick and fast. He can create space. We have four returning linemen in Ruben Alfaro, Evan Franks, Alex Flores and Travis Staten. They will have to play strong and physical for us up front.

THARPTOWN WILDCATS 2018 Schedule

All the guys I mentioned on offense are going to be counted on the defensive side of the ball. That means we are going to be in shape – mentally and physically. There is no doubt it will take its toll from a depth standpoint.

A:

Q:

WHAT HAVE YOU ENJOYED THE MOST ABOUT BEING A HEAD COACH?

I love the game of football – the strategy and the heat of battle. But I guess what I never really anticipated going in is the relationships you make with these kids – especially when you’ve gone through the trials like we have. You develop a special bond, and you are able to make an impact on their lives.

VINA HIGH SCHOOL RED DEVILS Class 1A, Region 8 Q&A by BART MOSS Photos by BART MOSS

Q&A WITH COACH JASON HARRIS The Vina Red Devils enter their second season under the leadership of Coach Jason Harris. The Red Devils remained in Class 1A in the most recent reclassification, and their schedule didn’t change much. Vina will play in 1A, Region 8, which includes Cherokee, Hackleburg, Mars Hill, Phillips, Shoals Christian and Waterloo. Non-region contests will include Marion County, Brilliant, Phil Campbell and Tharptown.

Q:

THIS IS YOUR SECOND YEAR AS A HEAD COACH. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF AFTER ONE YEAR?

There is a lot of responsibility that goes with being a head coach. It all falls on your shoulders. I’m a perfectionist, and I have a hard time delegating. The first year I felt like I needed to do it all myself. So I guess the biggest thing I have had to learn is how to delegate and give more responsibility to my assistant coaches.

Q:

WHERE DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR PROGRAM IS AFTER ONE YEAR UNDER YOUR LEADERSHIP?

We are still building. We have more kids out than we’ve had in a while. I know it’s the most we’ve had in my seven years here. This will be the first year we will be able to have a separate junior high group and varsity group. In the past, we’ve had to play guys both ways. Hopefully, that won’t be the case this year. The guys know what to expect. We are a little old school when it comes to

weights and conditioning, and we are in much better shape than last year.

Q:

WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT FROM THE RED DEVILS OFFENSIVELY, AND WHO SHOULD WE KEEP AN EYE ON?

We are going to line up and play smash-mouth football. We are going to play out of the I-formation, split backfield run right at teams and try to eat up as much clock as possible. We are going to keep things simple and not try to do too much. Isaac Harper is one of our team leaders, a senior. He is stronger and quicker than he was last year. He will play on the offensive line and at fullback. Zach Davidson is one of many 10th-graders we will rely on. He is a lot stronger and faster and will be on the offensive line. The same can be said for Dawson Miller. Braden Moomaw, a junior, will be our quarterback. This is his first year to play the position, and he’s learning – but he’s learning quick. He’s gained a lot of confidence, and his throwing ability has improved. In the end, our strength is going to be between the tackles.

A:

Q:

HOW ABOUT ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE FOOTBALL?

Again, Isaac Harper will be a leader at middle linebacker. He knows the defense well because he’s been in the system since the eighth grade. We have some solid secondary players, and we should be strong up front. I expect our defense to be our strength this year. We will play a base 4-3 defense. Also look for Dawson Miller and Elijah Whitfield to make big impacts.

A:

Q:

WHAT IS SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT THIS TEAM THAT STANDS OUT THIS YEAR?

We have a lot of 10th-graders who are great leaders and hungry to win. They seem to hate losing more than they love winning, if that makes sense. I’m really excited about this class. We have some great seniors and juniors, but the sophomore class is mature beyond their years when it comes to leadership and attitude. It’s good for the here-and-now, but it is great for the future.
