Golden Tigers

The 2016 Russellville Golden Tigers are looking to continue the success they experienced last season when they went 11-2, finished undefeated in region play and advanced to the third round of the playoffs. AHSAA realignment did not cause RHS to change classifications as the Golden Tigers will remain in 5A. LeeHuntsville, Jemison and Brooks will join Russellville, Lawrence County, St. John Paul, East Limestone and Ardmore to make up Region 8. “I think the thing that is going to drive this team is their commitment to doing things the right way,” Head Coach Mark Heaton said. Heaton, who is entering his third season as head coach of Russellville, challenges his team to climb every day, and he knows that a strong senior class can help the team accomplish that goal. “We’re really excited about this senior class. They’ve been here, and they’re trying to uphold the standard that we’ve set in place for this program. You’ve got a lot of guys pushing toward the same goals and vision that we have as a whole. That character, integrity and leadership wins more games than athleticism does every day.” The offensive line looks to be a strength of the team this year. “You’ve got four returning starters that are seniors,” Heaton said about his group up front. Austin Stidham, Gabriel-Pedro Juan, Slate Wallace and Raul Mojica are the senior starters on the line, and it looks as though they will be joined by junior

John David Palmer. “Right now, he is starting at left guard,” Heaton said. “He has made a vast improvement and is getting better every day.” Other experienced offensive leaders include three-year starting quarterback Payton Nichols, Nate Franklin and Colin Garrison. On the other side of the ball, the Golden Tiger defense returns two leading tacklers in Landon Ezzell and Sid Willis. Roman Cortez will bring experience to the defensive line, and Kyle Tidwell returns for his senior year. Garrison and Marvin Betancourt will be counted on heavily on offense, defense and special teams for the Golden Tigers. The Golden Tigers began the season with a jamboree at home Aug. 18 against 6A opponent Athens. The Golden Eagles will be led by new head coach Cody Gross. The schedule shapes up favorably in the early going for RHS. Five of the first six regular season games will be home games. The three non-region games will feature familiar schools to long-time Russellville fans. Deshler will come to Russellville in the opening game. The Hartselle Tigers return to the schedule for homecoming in game five of the season, and the regular season wraps up with a trip to Colbert County. “I wanted to get a better local-type schedule so that our fan base can enjoy it, and we can bring in a bigger fan base too and create some better gate revenue,” Heaton said. “When you play a tough region and non-region schedule and you get into the playoffs, that’s where it shows up.”

AHSAA Class 5A, Region 8 2015 Record: 11-2 COACH

Mark Heaton “We’ve got great community support and support from our school board and our administration. When they say there’s a big commitment to excellence here, they mean that.”

Phil Campbell The Phil Campbell Bobcats have been waiting on a group of young talent to make their way to the rank of veterans, and now they have arrived. The Bobcats have been steadily improving for the past few years under the tutelage of Coach Ryan Swinney, even while warding off the injury bug. Now Swinney hopes a healthy team and veteran experience and leadership can bring the Bobcats back to the top tier of their 2A region. “We have a lot of experienced players back,” said Swinney, who is in his fourth year as the Bobcats head coach. “They are ready to get the season started. They have worked really hard this summer, and we believe we are ready to compete at a higher level.” For the Bobcats to have a successful season, they need to get off to a quick start. That was made a little more difficult due to the new region alignments and schedule changes. “We added two very tough teams that were 3A last year in Lamar County and Sheffield, and they both happen to be our first two region games as well,” said Swinney. “They are both very athletic, and we will need to be healthy and ready early on. I have no doubt we can compete and win if we stay healthy and work hard.” For the Bobcats to get off to a good start, Swinney will have to rely on a bevy of veteran football players to bring leadership and experience

Bobcats

to the field. Some of those Swinney mentioned were Colby Baker, Austin Riner, Peyton Thomas, Joe Hardy and Trey and Malique Nalls. “Those guys will provide the cornerstone to our team early on this year,” said Swinney. “We need for them to be performing at a very high level this year. I will expect a lot from them.” The Bobcats will have to replace a couple of key players on both sides of the ball. Tristan Godsey was the Bobcats offensive go-to guy and a key team leader. Matthew Stancil was very disruptive for the Bobcats on defense last year. “We have to have some guys step in those positions and fill their shoes,” said Swinney. “We have a lot of skilled guys back on offense, which should make us a very balanced team on offense. Our offensive line should be better with more experience.” One of the Bobcats Achilles heels in the past has been defense, in particular, run defense. Swinney said that has to improve this year, and he expects it to. “I feel like we should be better up front than we have been, but we have to be better at stopping the run,” said Swinney. “We lost several secondary players, so we have to have guys step up in those positions for us.” Phil Campbell hosted county rival Tharptown on the opening week of the season Aug. 19.

Red Bay Tigers The Red Bay Tigers will enter the 2016 season with three impressive streaks they would like to continue. The Tigers have won 18 straight regular season games, 18 straight region games and ten straight road games. If the Tigers are going to keep the streaks going, they are going to have to rely on some new faces at some key positions. The Tigers will have to replace 13 graduating seniors with who contributed to last year’s teams success. Sophomore quarterback Kolby Bragwell will replace three-year starter Troy Borden, who had an 18-1 touchdown-interception ratio last season. The Tigers will look to three new offensive linemen to protect Bragwell and open up holes for veteran running back Tate Ozbirn. Ozbirn rushed for 1,700 yards last season, and the Tigers will be looking for that kind of production again this season. “Kolby will need to continue to improve from week to week,” said Red Bay Coach Michael Jackson. “On the line we have to replace one of the top offensive linemen in North Alabama, Kolby Knoblock, but we have two of our best linemen returning in Hunter Tyler at tackle and Kurtlain Hiser at center.” “Kaleb Burroughs, Jesus Kelly, and Max Bullen are going to have to step up and contribute on offense this year as well as defense,” Jackson added. “Tate and Aaron Lewey will need to have big years running the football.”

Jackson is in his 15th season as a head coach and has a record of 20-3 in his three years as the Tiger coach. On the defensive side of the ball, Red Bay will have to have some new guys step up to defend their lofty ranking as the No. 1 scoring defense in Alabama in all classifications. The Tigers will have some key players back. They return their top two tacklers, Andrew Ray and Andrew Richardson, both linebackers. They also return All-State cornerback Kaleb Burroughs. “Defense will be a learning experience for some of our new guys,” said Jackson. “We will have at least six new starters from a team that gave up only 77 points last year.” Jackson also mentioned he expects big things from Dustan Burks, Elijah Ingle and Joseph Newell on the defensive side of the ball. With reclassification came schedule changes and new region alignments for all teams. Red Bay will add two teams who dropped from 3A to 2A – Sheffield and Lamar County. “Our first four games are against teams that had coaching changes,” said Jackson. “This will be a little bit harder on our game planning because we are not sure how those teams will attack us. I think the region will be much stronger this year with at least six team having a good shot at making the playoffs.” Red Bay opened the 2016 season at home on Aug. 19 hosting Colbert Heights.

Tharptown The Tharptown Wildcats will see some significant changes this year on a number of fronts. While their school is growing by leaps and bounds because of consolidation in Lawrence County and the decision by Russellville City Schools to stop bussing into the county and start charging tuition to non-city residents, the athletic program is dropping from the 2A classification to the 1A classification. The move will likely be temporary because of two straight small senior classes. In the meantime, however, the Tharptown Wildcats expect to take advantage of the reprieve to rebuild their football program. The Wildcats will under the leadership of first year Head Coach Kevin Lacey. Lacey is not new to the program. He has been a teacher and assistant coach for several years. He said he believes his familiarity with the players and their familiarity with him will provide his team the stability needed to compete in the upcoming season. “It is exciting to lead these guys as their head coach,” said Lacey. “I’m anxious to get started, and the players are too. They have worked hard this summer to get ready, and we hope to build something special for this school and this community.” The Wildcats are coming off an 0-10 season but lost some key players from last year’s team, according to Lacey. “We had a lot of seniors who played key roles last year,” said Lacey. “Matthew Brasuell anchored our offensive and defensive line. Heath

Wildcats

Hatton was a threat at quarterback with his athleticism and did an outstanding job of getting guys in the right position on defense at the safety position.” Lacey will be looking for leadership from a mixture of veterans and youth. “Mikey Rossom is returning at the running back position,” said Lacey. “The bulk of our offensive and defensive line are returning as sophomores. They all had a lot of playing time last season. Carson Petree is also returning as a sophomore at the quarterback position and will have to play on both sides of the ball.” Lacey is looking to return to the basics and simplify things for his team. “We did too much overthinking last year,” said Lacey. “We had too many players overthink every situation and run themselves out of plays. We are going to simplify things for our guys and stress beating the guy across from them.” “Defensively, we looked pretty good in the spring,” Lacey said. “We have to do a better job of tackling in the open field and not giving up big plays.” Lacey is optimistic and ready for the season to begin. “I am excited about this season,” said Lacey. “The core of this group is still young, but they are eager. If they will buy in and work hard, we can have some success this season.” The Wildcats got a quick early season test as they traveled to Phil Campbell to play the Bobcats Aug. 19 for their season opener.

AHSAA Class 2A, Region 8 2015 Record: 0-10 COACH

Vina There are a lot of reasons for optimism among the fans of the Vina Red Devils this year. One of those reasons is a strong, experienced group of seniors who love the game of football and like to work hard. “We will return eight starters on offense,” said Vina Coach Luke Childers, who is in his third year as the Red Devils head coach. “Our offensive line has started together for four straight years. That should give us the opportunity to pound the football and control the clock.” The Red Devils, who finished 5-5 overall last year and 3-3 in the region, will return some key players on offense, according to Childers. Among those he mentioned: Tyler Renfrow (QB/RB/LB), Andrew Upton (OL/DL), Austin Petree (OL/ DL) and Josh Cochran (OL/ DL). “We will have a very strong senior class with a lot of leadership,” said Childers. “They have been working very hard this summer and want to go out winners. I think our fans will be really excited to watch these guys play this year.” The Red Devils will have to find some newcomers to replace two key loses in Joseph Emerson (DE/RB) and Tanner Miller (LB/FB). “We also return eight starters

Red Devils on defense,” said Childers. “We should be able to match up and be competitive with our schedule this year. We will need to stop the run and not give up explosive plays if we are going to be able to play our style of offense.” Childers said he likes the tenacity of this senior-laden group and their work ethic. He expects that to be a key intangible to helping his team achieve success in 2016. “We might not have the number of players some other schools have,” said Childers. “What we lack in numbers, however, we make up for in hard work and grit. Our guys will always play until the whistle blows, and they will never quit.” Like other teams across the county, Vina’s schedule will change because of reclassification and region realignments. Childers likes the changes to his team’s schedule and believes those changes could benefit the Red Devils as they try to make the playoffs this year. “Our region changed a lot, and we’ve added three new non-region teams. I think our schedule gives us a chance to be really competitive against everyone we play,” said Childers. Vina hosted the Shoals Christian Flame in the season opener Aug. 19.

AHSAA Class 1A, Region 8 2015 Record: 5-6 COACH

Luke Childers “Our offensive line has started together for four straight years. That should give us the opportunity to pound the football and control the clock. We will have a very strong senior class with a lot of leadership.”

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH ALABAMA

Bobby Wallace Veteran Lions team aims for fourth straight GSC title With 40 lettermen, including 17 starters and eight All-GSC performers, back from last season, the University of North Alabama football team reported Aug. 10 to begin pre-season work and a quest for an unprecedented fourth straight Gulf South Conference Championship. UNA is coming off a 9-3 season that saw the Lions win a share of a third straight Gulf South Conference Championship and advance to the NCAA Division II Playoffs for a third straight year. If the Lions can follow with another GSC title in 2016, they will become the only team in Gulf South Conference history to claim four straight league crowns. “Obviously winning the GSC, getting in the playoffs and competing for a national championship are our goals every year,” UNA Head Coach Bobby Wallace said. “We never shy away from those goals. We will have a lot of work to do to obtain those goals this fall, but they are definitely possible. UNA has 78 total players returning from last year, including redshirts, and will have 27 returning seniors on its 2016 roster. “We do have a lot of veteran players back, but it will still be a new team,” Wallace said. “We have 17 starters back and several others who have started at one time or another. We

The Game Plan

also have a lot of players we think can help us that have not played a lot yet or played in a starting role. Wallace said keys for UNA in 2016 will be developing leadership and surviving a rugged early season schedule. “We will have to overcome some inexperience early in some areas, but we think we have folks to fill those spots,” he said. “We also lost a lot of leadership from last year, and we will have to have people step up and lead this team. Our schedule early is also tough, facing three playoff teams from last year in the first four weeks, including the FCS (Football Championship Series) runner-up Jacksonville State to open the season.” Steadman Campbell, a 10-year member of the UNA coaching staff, will be in his first season as offensive coordinator, but Wallace says the Lions do not plan to change their offensive approach entering the 2016 season. “We lost a lot of play-making ability from last season, but we expect to be just as effective running the football,” said Wallace. “We might run the quarterback a little more this year, but our big plays will come from our wide receivers. It will be a combination of a power running game and big play pass game with three quarterbacks who can throw and run.” Returning starters on offense include All-American guard Stephen Evans (6-4, 302, SR) of Boston, Mass., center Cody Vaughn (6-3, 310, SR) of Lucedale, Miss., tackle Jordan Brooks (6-3, 313, SR) of Pelham, receivers Dre Hall (6-1, 199, JR) of Columbia, Tenn., and Julius Jones (6-4, 211, JR) of Athens, and fullback Ryan Harper (5-11, 225, SR) of Stephenville, Texas. Evans, Hall and Harper were on the 2015 All-GSC squad. Three-year letterman Jacob Tucker (60, 204, SR) of Linden, Tenn., is back at quarterback to direct the UNA offense. Tucker has seen plenty of playing time over the last three seasons and led UNA to a win as a starter against Western Oregon in 2014. The UNA defense returns eight starters, including defensive linemen E.J. Parnell (6-3, 249, SR) of Los

Angeles, Calif., Tyler Smith (5-10, 228, SR) of Rogersville, Freddie Reed (6-0, 288, JR) of West Point, Miss., and Eddquerion Harris (6-0, 307, SO) of Courtland, linebacker Eddrick Harris (5-10, 214, SR) of Courtland, and defensive backs Levi Fell (5-11, 161, SR) of Muscle Shoals, Philbert Martial (5-10, 164, SR) of Mobile, and James Rivers (5-11, 212, SR) of Irondale. Reed, Fell and Martial all earned All-GSC honors in 2015. “We have a lot of experience back on defense and a lot of speed,” Wallace said. “I feel like we should be better or improved in a lot of areas over last year. We have a lot more depth, and that means we will play a lot more people.” All three starters are back on special teams in place kicker Kevin Henke 6-0, 165, JR) of St. Charles, Mo., punter Jeb Millender (5-11, 215, SR) of Amory, Miss., and long snapper Wil Lovelace (5-11, 190, JR) of Florence. Martial, who has almost 2,000 career return yards, will be UNA’s primary returner for the fourth straight year. He has averaged 23.6 yards on kickoff returns and 10.2 yards on punt returns. UNA will open its 2016 season Sept. 1 at 6 p.m., against its oldest rival, Jacksonville State, a team that went 13-2 a year ago, losing to Auburn in double-overtime and to North Dakota State in the FCS Championship Game. The Division II portion of North Alabama’s 2016 schedule includes five home dates and four GSC road games. UNA’s first five opponents all won at least seven games last season and three advanced to the playoffs. Overall, seven of UNA’s 2016 opponents had winning records a year ago. “With the schedule that we have early, playing most of the traditional powers in the GSC on the front end, it might be tough to get off to a great start,” Wallace said. “But it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish and we will learn a lot about our team early.” -courtesy of UNA Sports Information Department

UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA

Nick Saban The Alabama Crimson Tide comes into the season with 14 returning starters and 48 lettermen –23 lettermen and six starters on offense and 21 lettermen and five starters on defense. Four lettermen and three starters – including Adam Griffith and J.K. Scott – return on special teams. On offense, Alabama will have to replace yet another quarterback. As Jake Coker moves on to better things, the competition for his position now seems to be between freshman Blake Barnett and junior Cooper Bateman. Bateman is seen as the more likely candidate, seeing as he’s had more playing time and even started the Ole Miss game over Coker. As for their running backs, Alabama has lost their top two, one of them being a Heisman Trophy winner. It will be hard to replace Derrick Henry, who broke numerous Alabama and SEC records this season, but Bo Scarbrough seems to be up to the challenge. Damien Harris was the No. 3 running back most of last season and will more

32

than likely take the other open position. The Tide will still be hanging on to their top tight end, O.J. Howard, and we should be seeing more action from Hale Hentges. He wasn’t used much last season but could make a big difference this season. Bama will be pretty well stacked when it comes to wide receivers, even with the loss of Richard Mullaney. With Calvin Ridley, Robert Foster and ArDarius Stewart, the Tide should dominate in their passing game. J.C. Hassenauer looks to be the likely replacement for fifth-year center Ryan Kelly, though that’s no easy task. As for the right tackle spot, it’ll be harder to predict who will replace Dominick Jackson. Charles Baldwin, a junior college transfer, looks like a good guess. Dallas Warmack, Bradley Bozeman and Brandon Kennedy could also push for starting spots on what could be another young offensive line. On defense the Crimson Tide got a big break when Jonathan Allen decided to return for his senior season. He led the team with 12 sacks in 2015. Sadly,

the Tide lost its top two defensive linemen – Jarran Reed and A’Shawn Robinson – plus D.J. Pettway and Darren Lake, but there’s still plenty of talent for the team to not to suffer too much. Da’Shawn Hand, who played very well against Clemson in the title game, should be seen more often this next season. He and Dalvin Tomlinson could rotate at one of the defensive end spots. Standout freshman Daron Payne should be the clear starter at the nose guard spot and should be one of the major bright spots on the defensive line. Joshua Frazier should also get playing time plus at least one of the incoming recruits, like Quinnen Williams or Kendell Jones. Bama lost several vets, specifically Reggie Ragland, but Saban and his staff will still have plenty to work with. Ryan Anderson and Tim Williams will more than likely move into starting roles after mainly serving as third-down specialists last season. Marlon Humphrey is a good bet to start at one cornerback position, and Eddie Jackson should be one of the starting safeties, but everything else is still up in the air. Minkah Fitzpatrick will be a starter somewhere, but will coaches keep him at the “star” position or move him to a cornerback spot? That could determine how the rest of the secondary shakes out. Kendall Sheffield, who redshirted in 2015, is highly thought of in the program, so he’ll find a good chunk of playing time this season. Ronnie Harrison seems like the natural fit to take over Geno Matias-Smith’s vacant safety spot, but he’ll face competition. As a whole, Alabama seems to be well stacked for this upcoming season. Seeing as they are predicted to come out of their conference in first, we should expect to see great things from this team. Story by BERNIE MOUSSAD

AUBURN UNIVERSITY

Gus Malzahn This season the Auburn Tigers are returning 53 lettermen and 17 starters. Out of the 53 returning lettermen 23 are on offense, 25 are on defense and six are on special teams. Both the offense and defense have six starters returning and four on special teams. Coach Gus Malzahn faced a rough season after having been predicted to be the SEC champion. Malzahn will now have to push his team this season to get Auburn back to where it was just a few years ago. That will be difficult, seeing as Auburn is predicted to finish in sixth in the SEC West. The Tigers are returning six starters on offense but lost some of their top players last season. The quarterback position is now being fought over, but it appears John Franklin will be replacing Jeremy Johnson as the starter. After all of the hype Auburn had due to the fact that Johnson was quarterback, it was quite a letdown to see how poorly he actually performed in games. He is still a contestant for the second team spot with Sean White but will more than likely

The Game Plan

not make it back to the first team position. After the loss of running back Peyton Barber to the NFL, that position is now more than likely to go to senior Jovon Robinson, who really turned on his game late last season when the Tigers decided to give him the ball more often. Roc Thomas performed incredibly on the second team, while Kerryon Johnson recovered from shoulder surgery. If Thomas transitions to more of a receiver/running back hybrid this fall, look for Johnson to take over as Robinson’s primary backup. Offensive tackles Shon Coleman and Avery Young both chose to enter the NFL, so senior Robert Leff will have to step up his game to make up for the loss of two outstanding players. Auburn’s defense introduced new defensive coach Will Muschamp after he left the Florida Gators, a week after the end of the regular season in 2014. Muschamp tried his best to improve the defense at Auburn and did great work there, but the Tigers still finished the season in the SEC with a 2-6 record. Since then, Muschamp has been hired as the head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks, which

left Auburn without a defensive coach. Malzahn eventually found Kevin Steele, who has worked with head coaches like Nick Saban, Les Miles and Johnny Majors. He even worked in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers, so Steele has seen it all and will hopefully bring plenty to the Auburn defense. Kris Frost, linebacker at Auburn, said Steele will find “a whole bunch of guys who have an incredible work ethic – guys who are always willing to, we say, are going to work; always willing to clock in, get work done; and clock out. They come in with the same attitude each and every day.” With this in mind, Auburn will not be without some starters from last year’s defense, so the Tigers will not be starting from scratch. They still have six starters left on the defense, including defensive end Carl Lawson and tackle Montravius Adams. Those two will more than likely be the strength of the defense this season. In the linebacker position, three former starters – Kris Frost, Cassanova McKinzy and Justin Garrett – have to leave after their eligibility runs out. They had 601 tackles and 76 starts combined over the last four seasons. Auburn will be looking to Tre’ Williams to step after his excellent season in 2015. Deshaun Davis could be someone to watch. The secondary is where things look a little iffy. Auburn has talented depth but not too much experience beyond their starters. Carlton Davis has returned after an All-SEC season as a freshman cornerback. It’s still uncertain if Josh Holsey will be able to come back after tearing his knee two games into the 2015 season. This season will be filled with many new faces for Auburn, but they still have enough of the old to help get them through it. Only time will tell if Auburn is able to prove the polls wrong on their predicted sixth place finish. Story by BERNIE MOUSSAD

Lewis Neal (DE), Christian LaCouture (DT), Tre’Davious White (CB), Jamal Adams (SS) Key losses Vadal Alexander (OT), Jerald Hawkins (OT), Lamar Louis (SLB), Deion Jones (WLB), Jalen Mills (NB), Jamie Keehn (P) Coach says “Brandon Harris at quarterback, cer2015 9-3, 5-3 SEC-Fourth in SEC Western tainly our play there will be significant Division, won the Texas Bowl against and he shows more poise and more comfort in – he’s more ambitious, Texas Tech he’s – the more you accomplish, the more you want to accomplish. The Projected finish artistic piece of being a quarterback Second in Western Division is the style of throw, and the style of throw is really where he’s at … And Briefly No wonder head coach Les Miles there’s where you want a quarterback was on the hot seat in 2015, this LSU to spend his time, and he is, and I squad was full of young, unproven tal- think for a guy that’s throwing for 2,600 ent that was sure to make the season yards, 19 touchdowns in two years is a challenge. The NFL has raided this kind of a nice position to be in going squad of many a player over recent into the season.” Les Miles seasons. But next year won’t be a starting over point for once. The old Players say knock that quarterbacks and the passing game keep holding these Tigers “I think Coach Miles just has a way of back will still be questioned despite the making things very exciting. That game heralded Brandon Harris behind cen- (the bowl game) we were just playing ter. Leonard Fournette is on a Heisman for Coach Miles. He’s the coach that quest … he might win it this time. So we nutshell, LSU is stacked for 2016. just want to fulfill him and play for him and I think we did that.” Key players returning Leonard Fournette (RB) Leonard Fournette (TB), Brandon Harris (QB), Malachi Dupre (WR),

Players say “We know what we need to do. We know what the feeling is like, being so close, not getting the job done. It’s not so much Coach Gran, it is everybody, Everybody has bought in and Coach Gran was definitely a plus to add on to it. It’s going to be great year.” Jojo Kemp, RB

2015 10-3, 6-2 SEC — Second in SEC Western Division, Sugar Bowl champions against Oklahoma State Projected finish Third in Western Division

Coach says “The records that we’ve shattered since we’ve been at Ole Miss are pretty remarkable. A lot of that is due to the offensive stuff that we’ve had. Our defense led the nation one year also in scoring and last year offensively we led the SEC in most every category. So, there’s a lot of great returners there. We lost a lot of great players. Most people want to talk about Laremy, and Robert, and Laquon, but, man, the Cody Cores of the world and the Trae Elstons of the world, and the Mike Hiltons and the Fahn Coopers, and the Channing Wards, all of these kids that play so many snaps for us that are now on NFL rosters, we definitely will miss them. But we’ve recruited extremely well and really excited about some of the young kids that we have that we get the chance to develop as we get toward the season.” Hugh Freeze

Briefly All the recruiting success in Oxford may not have this team ready to compete for the SEC West crown, but they will continue to have a say in who does. Ole Miss can beat any team on any given day and then some. Transfer king Chad Kelly is primed to be the best quarterback in the league. The Players say NFL has stolen some key components but that’s life when you stockpile the depth chart “I like to call (the SEC West) pretty much with SEC type talent. Coach Hugh Freeze a gauntlet. It’s powerhouses, week in and has done just that and his Rebel squad will week out. With our schedule this year, it’s continue to teeter in and out of the Top 10. really tough at the beginning – pretty much a big punch up front. We have Florida State, and two weeks later we play Alabama. It Key players returning Chad Kelly (QB), Damore’ea Stringfellow goes on from there. But I think that’s com(WR), Javon Patterson (OG),Fadol Brown peting in the SEC, and that’s why it’s so suc(DE), Marques Haynes (DE), Kendarius cessful: the competition and the way teams push each other. We take pride in it, and we Webster (DE) work each and every day. We want to be the team to take the cake this year, so we Key losses Jaylen Walton (RB), Cody Core (WR), accept the challenge week in and week out.” Evan Engram (TE)

Brown (DE), Zach Jackson (LB) Coach says “Defensively, our defensive philosophy is not going to change, but our personality is with Peter Sirmon coming in as our D coordinator. A lot of new defensive coaches on our staff. That’s always going to change, a little bit of that personality, a little bit of the play call. But our philosophy will not change. You see that defense. We have 11 guys running the ball, a very attacking 2015 10-3, 6-2 in SEC – Second in SEC style of defense that we have played since Western Division, lost to Georgia Tech in I’ve been the head coach and will always play while I’m the head coach at Mississippi the Orange Bowl State.” Projected finish Dan Mullen Seventh in Western Division Players say Key players returning “Coach Sirmon is great; He is an ex-NFL Brandon Holloway (RB), Fred Brown guy. He has done a lot for our defense (WR), Fred Ross (WR), Gus Walley (TE), already. He relates really well to the players, Nick James (DT), A.J. Jefferson (DE) NFL guys tend to relate to us a lot better because they kind of know what we have Key losses been through. He is bringing new things to Dak Prescott (QB), Darrion Hutcherson the table but we are still Mississippi State (TE), Rufus Warren (OT), Justin Malone defense. I’m really excited for this season.” (OG), De’Runnya Wilson (WR), Ryan Richie Brown, LB Coach says “When I first got to the job in South Carolina, I talked to our players about effort, toughness and discipline in everything they do. In every walk of their life -- academically, athletically, spiritually, and socially -- giving great effort, having toughness with what you do and discipline. It doesn’t take any ability in any of those situations, it doesn’t take any talent if you do that. I’ve been really pleased with the reception of our players. Any time there’s change or coaching changes, and 2015 3-9, 1-7 SEC — Seventh in SEC those things happen, there’s resistance. We’ve had very little. Our guys have really Eastern Division bought into what we’re doing.” Projected finish Will Muschamp Seventh in Eastern Division Players say Key players returning “Three and nine is the past. We have Perry Orth (QB), Lorenzo Nunez (QB), a new coach, new strength coaches that David Williams (RB), Marquavius Lewis Coach brought in and he is probably one (DE), T.J. Hollowman (MLB) of the best strength coaches in the nation. He does a great job of pushing us and Key losses Brandon Wilds (RB), Shaq Roland trying to make us forget last season and (WR), Jerell Adams (TE), Gerald Dixon move on.” Deebo Samuel, WR Jr. (DT), T.J. Gurley (SS), Will Sport (OG) Tra Carson (RB), Mike Matthews (C), Alonzo Williams (DT), Brandon Williams (CB), De’Vante Harris (CB) Coach says “So, for us, offensively, we came through spring football. We got great talent at the wide receiver position. Everybody knows that. For the first time we had five running backs in the spring. Anybody saw our spring game saw we 2015 8-5, 4-4 SEC — Fifth in SEC Western played a bunch of different guys. We’ll Division, lost to Louisville 21-27 in the continue down that road with what we Music City Bowl want to do. ” Kevin Sumlin Projected finish Fourth in Western Division Players say Key players returning “Whatever happens, happens and Josh Reynolds (WR), Christian Kirk (WR), Ricky Seals (WR), Daeshon we’re not really worried about the last Hall (DE), Myles Garrett (DE), Shaan loss and how it affected us. We just Washington (SLB), A.J. Hilliard (MLB) got knocked down a couple of times and just have to keep working for the Key losses next game.” Kyle Allen (QB), Kyler Murray (QB), Myles Garrett, DL

set of the players that you have that’s on your roster and what you recruit, too, and design their offense and defense around their strengths. Don’t ask them to do something they can’t do. But last year, and I love experience coming back, but it’s our job as coaches, they got to play better than they did last year. And that’s a tremendous responsibility and opportunity for us to be a really good 2015 5-7, 1-7 SEC — Sixth in SEC Eastern football team.” Barry Odom Division Projected finish Sixth in Eastern Division Key players returning Maty Mauk (QB), Anthony Sherrills (SS), Aarion Penton (CB), Walter Brady (DE), Charles Harris (DE) Coach says “I’m excited about the offensive staff that we have. I’m excited -- as coaches, you’re teachers. For us, and I always thought this coaching defensive football, you’ve got to make sure you take the skill

Players say “We definitely had a lot of adversity the last year. I think it does nothing but give you the opportunity to be a better team and to come closer. When last year was going on, obviously my teammates are brothers to me it’s a family so when they stand up for something like that we all have each other’s backs … At the end of the day, in our facilities, in the locker room, we are very close. Even what’s going on with the AD nothing is going to change, we’re going to stick together.” Sean Culkin, TE (OT), Mack Crowder (OG), Marquez North (WR), Owen Williams (DT), Curt Maggitt (DE), LaDarrell McNeil (SS)

Coach says “We talked about clutch plays, making critical plays at critical moments of the game, and we showed everyone examples. You look at all of the great players. Why are they great players? Because they make a play when it 2015 the most to lead their team to 9-4, 5-3 SEC — Second in SEC matters victory, so really talked about that. Eastern Division, dominated the The key for we us is fast and finishOutback Bowl against Northwestern ing strong. Our starting first seven opponents 45-6l have a combined win record of almost 70 wins, and they’ve all seven of those Projected finish opponents participated in bowl games. First in Eastern Division So, for us, we have to start fast.” Butch Jones Key players returning Jalen Hurd (RB), Derek Barnett (DE), Players say Josh Malone (WR), Joshua Dobbs “We are pushing ourselves everyday (QB), Jauan Jennings (WR), Kendal trying to find the one thing to make us VIckers (DT), LaTroy Lewis (DE) better. It has been a great mindset for our team and we will be ready when the Key losses Von Pearson (WR), Kyler Kerbyson first game comes around.” Joshua Dobbs, QB (SS), Jahmel McIntosh (FS), Stepehen Weatherly (OLB) Coach says “This team’s got a team-first mentality, has established a team-first mantra. We don’t care about who is standing on the hill. We don’t care about who takes the accolades. It’s about this team collectively and what we need to do in order to move the needle and get up the hill. With that, we will have a couple of marquee guys people may recog2015 nize and talk about, but it’s about the collec4-8, 2-6 SEC — Fourth in SEC Eastern tive growth of this group and what they’ve Division committed to in order to move this team from where we are to where we need to be. Projected finish Derek Mason Fifth in Eastern Division Key players returning Players say Kyle Shurmur (QB), Ralph Webb (RB), “I think Coach Mason is one of the greatCaleb Scott (WR), Will Holden (OT), Adam est defensive minds in the nation, so it’ll be Butler (DE), Jay Woods (NT), Jonathan just a matter of us learning his scheme. Wynn (DE) We’ve only used a percentage of the tools that he has in his toolbox but I’m excited to Key losses see what he does next year, especially with Steven Scheu (TE), Jake Berstein (OG), the different packages we have.” Spencer Pulley (C), Caleb Azubike (DE), Oren Burks, LB Darreon Herring (ILB), Andrew Williamson
