EDITOR’S LETTER April has been a difficult month for me and I am glad I writing the month end editorial to mark the end of this month. I have lost loved ones in this month and a friend of mine is fighting for his life in a private hospital, after a tragic accident that happened this month. But on a lighter note, I appreciate the fact that I am still alive, healthy and ready to share my life experiences with the world.

The ever hard working mayor of Tshwane Kgosientso Ramokgopa, delivered the state of the city address last Thursday, which outlined the past achievements and more importantly the future plans of the city's administration. Crime does not pay, but it seems like our pages will never have a shortage of crime stories. Our dynamic entrepreneur this edition is DJ Sbu, the ever energetic and charismatic entrepreneur.

SUSPECT TWO SUSPECTS SENTENCED IMPRISONMENT FOR ARRESTED TO LIFE KILLING MOTHER FOR FRAUD Staff Reporter Image: Loate SAPS

Two suspects known as Stanley Legodi 48 years old and David Kgatle 43 years old were sentenced for two life sentences at GaRankuwa Magistrate court by Judge Mogotsi for murder and rape on 19 April.Stanley was sentenced for life imprisonment for killing his biologically mother Kate Legodi who was 74 years old and David Kgatle sentenced for life imprisonment for killing Kate who was his stepmother.

The accused are sentenced for murder and rape and charges are running concurrently.Kate was a

well-known business women who was running a crèche at 1617 Mahlangu Stand in Winterveldt. The deceased was murdered on 14 February 2013 and his biologically son was arrested on the same day and stepson arrested after seven months. “Loate SAPS management congratulates Detective Warrant Officer Buti Baloyi and the justice system for bringing closure to the family, friends and community of Winterveldt, Said Constable Pertunia Chabangu.”

A male suspect aged 39 years old was arrested at Central City Complex (Mabopane) at the offices of Blacken Security College after he defrauded 20 security officers who trained at the College on 12 April. It is alleged that the suspect introduced himself as a member of Sebongile Security company, a company that is looking for security officers who will go and perform their duties at Eskom substation in Mpumalanga province. According to the victims he even told them to bring their luggages on Friday 09 April, because he had arranged accommodation for them in Mpumalanga. The suspect demanded R200 each from this 20 security officers (10 males and 10 females) apparently for registration. They waited for him from 07:30am to 16:30pm on 09 April and he never came and his cellphone was also off. “Anyone who was also defrauded by this man must contact Detective Warrant Officer Siko at Loate SAPS to give a statement, said Constable Pertunia Chabangu.”

t has come to the attention of the SAPS that most robberies are happening at the WI-Fi hotspots. Criminals are targeting students who use the wi-fi spots to do their assignments. Laptops, cellphones and tablets are robbed, especially during the night.

“We are requesting communities and scholars to avoid using their gadgets at these specified times, said Warrant Officer Mathews Nkoadi, SAPS Ga-Rankuwa.” A number of robberies have been reported and in other instances with injuries. A woman was recently robbed off her cellphone while walking towards the traffic lights of Ga-Rankuwa Shopping Mall. The suspects apparently pointed the victim with a firearm, tried to remove her wedding ring and sped off with a blue Renault Megane. The police are on the lookout for the said suspects. Anyone with information leading to the arrest of the said suspects is requested to contact SAPS on their crime line 08600 10111 or SMS 32211. “We are further appealing to members of the communities to avoid walking alone in secluded areas, said Warrant Officer Mathews Nkoadi, SAPS Ga-Rankuwa.”. Police management is also calling upon all communities to report any misconduct and/or any criminal activities by our members. SA RECOMMITS TO ZERO MALARIA BY 2018 Staff Reporter

n 25 April 2016, people across the globe took part in a wide range of activities to mark World Malaria Day. The day is being commemorated to highlight successes for controlling malaria and the plight of the disease around the world. The Department of Health says it plans to eliminate malaria by achieving zero cases of locally transmitted malaria by 2018. The 2016 World Malaria Day was held under the theme “End Malaria for Good.”

“The Department of Health has been very successful in reducing the malaria incidents in South Africa and has met the malaria targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). “South Africa has reversed the malaria incidents by 82% of the levels in the year 2000. In this regard, South Africa was presented with the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) award for achieving the malaria goal of the MDGs at the ALMA meeting for Heads of State and Government of the African Union in January 2016,” the department said. According to World Health Organization's (WHO) World Malaria Report 2015, there has been a major decline in global malaria cases and deaths since the year 2000, where mortality decreased by 60% with 62 million lives saved. Moreover, 57 Countries reduced malaria cases by at least 75%, between the year 2000 and 2015. Progress was made possible through the massive expansion of effective tools to prevent and treat malaria, such as indoor residual spraying, insecticide-treated mosquito nets, diagnostic testing and anti-malarial medicines. However, significant challenges remain globally with about 3.2 billion people at risk of malaria. “In 2015, there were an estimated 214 million new cases of malaria and 438,000 deaths, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. Millions of people are still not accessing the services they need to prevent and treat malaria,” the report noted. Malaria in South Africa is seasonal (transmission occurring

between September and May) and occurs in certain geographical areas of Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. “With commitment, dedication and support of all governments and partners, the vision for malaria elimination and eradication is possible,” said WHO. Everyone is at risk of contracting malaria in endemic areas, but there are some higher risk groups including, children under five years of age, pregnant women, people with compromised immune systems, travellers from non-endemic areas and immigrant workers. Symptoms of malaria vary from flu-like symptoms such as severe headaches, fever, joint pains, shivering episodes, nausea and vomiting. More serious symptoms include severe breathing difficulties, low blood sugar, severe anaemia, weakness of the body, convulsions, respiratory distress, jaundice, renal failure, repeated vomiting, shock, hypoglycaemia, black urine, abnormal bleeding and even a coma.

DYNAMIC ENTREPRENEURS Sbusiso Leope – DJ Sbu Leadership is not a feather that can easily be placed in everyone's cap and when considering the profile of a leader, the image of an overly serious, distinguished gentleman or lady most often comes to mind. That may have been the norm in former years, but as evinced in the evolution of our young democracy, youthful leadership is not only encouraged but also more frequently being realized. DJ Sbu is one such leader. His life is not only a metaphor for defying the odds, but simply a testament to the power of self-belief and hard work in realizing the Madiba dream, which was built on the premise of brotherhood and bringing a fellow dreamer forward. Born Sbusiso Leope, he was encouraged by his parents from an early age to use education as his ammunition against the world that awaited him.

He recalls township life in Tembisa as a difficult reality, but equally wonderful time filled with family, friendship and community. As an only child, he considered his many cousins as brothers and sisters and recalls a great sense of connection to all his neighbours. “I grew up like everyone else who grew up in a township. We didn't have tarred roads, there were no lights, no electricity and no electrical stoves, plasma screens or internet. We were not rich but we were okay. I used to sleep on the floor on a grass mat and foam mattress with my cousins. We would come home from school and prepare the fire,” he said. Given the volatile political situation in South Africa at the time, his parents moved him to a boarding school in Pretoria. It was at Central Secondary School that Sbu found his horizons broadened and his world changed. “At the time, a lot of guys were dropping out of school in Joburg to join the struggle and become comrades. For a lot of guys who didn't like school, it was a nice excuse and some just left school permanently. “My parents wanted me to go to boarding school to get me away from the political instability. Today I attribute a lot of my

success to having had some formal education, which made me think differently and look at things completely differently. I do know what education can do and I've seen it do wonders before my eyes,” Leope says. The experiences he had at boarding school, unknown to him, taught him values he would later come to understand as luxuries in a socially divided South Africa. His lessons in independence came early, flanked by fellow pupils from all over the country. The diversity he experienced would have been but a distant dream in the marginalised township he once called home.The tennis courts also offered him some companionship while at school and saw him develop an affection for the sport which would represent the next phase of his mental expansion.

PROPERTY TIPS TO TURN YOUR HOME INTO A MONEY-SPINNER

With interest rates on the rise, many property owners are eyeing their mortgage repayments with some trepidation, wondering how they are going to make ends meet. The answer might be closer than many people realise - in fact it could be right under your feet, according to Tony Clarke, managing director of the Rawson Property Group. "The options for generating income from your home have increased dramatically over the last few years. It's not just yard sales, or lodgers, or selling crocheted doilies on the internet anymore - people are getting creative, and the results can be far more lucrative than you'd expect," says Clarke. "One of the most profitable ventures, at least in the shortterm, is offering your home as a location for films and photo shoots. The local film industry is booming, and Cape Town is definitely on the map as a great location for international production houses of all types. Your home, garden or views could be exactly what they're after." He says it's not only luxury properties in demand as locations, either. Everything from shabby chic cottages to barbershops, to crumbling factories and car parks could have film and photographic potential. "The most important aspects that production companies look for tend to be light, space and a distinctive character," says Clarke, "as well as enough parking to accommodate their teams. If your home fits the bill, it's worthwhile getting in touch with a location agent. Your property could bring in as much as R5 000 to R10 000 a day." If you prefer to be more hands-on, and happen to be a whiz in the kitchen, you might find the new trend of supper clubs a more interesting proposition. Pop-up dining concepts are gaining popularity, and their intimate nature makes them ideal for a homebased business idea. "You would need a permit to run a food- service business from home," says Clarke, "but it is a great way to earn income and maximising the use of your property. You could also venture into catering or homebaking in a similar way." Running a bed and breakfast is perfect for social homeowners who enjoy interacting with interesting guests. With

websites like Airbnb, it's also particularly easy to do. Airbnb allows homeowners around the globe to advertise their spare rooms - or entire properties - to potential guests. "With Airbnb, you can host guests whenever you want to," says Clarke, "unlike a traditional B&B that generally stays open all year. You can rent a single room, a sleeper couch in your lounge, or your whole home or apartment, and set your own rates, picking and choosing guests through an online vetting process. It's all backed by Airbnb's host guarantee insurance as well, which means that even if things do go wrong, you'll be covered." In Cape Town, Airbnb rates range from R200 a night for a bed in a shared room, to over R70 000 a night for an entire luxury property. If you have the extra space, or are planning on being away for a time, listing your property on Airbnb can bring in a considerable amount of cash, Clarke says. As with all new business ventures, Clarke does recommend doing a bit of research before diving into a new project, however. "There are plenty of home businesses that don't require any permits," he says, "but you need to be sure yours complies with any regulations if you want to avoid trouble with your municipality or disgruntled neighbours. Also check that your mortgage doesn't have restrictions that limit the use of a property while it is bonded."

This ensures that the applicant avoids any disappointment in the feedback from the banks, and it significantly increases his chance of obtaining a mortgage bond,” says Van Alphen. This is according to Dawn van Alphen, CEO of the Cape-based bond originators, Bond Magic, who says faced with rising interest rates and an economy that is very close to being in a full-blooded recession - as well as with consumers countrywide finding it more and more difficult to meet their commitments - the banks are conscious that the risks attached to loans of all kinds have increased significantly. “They will, therefore, be checking even more scrupulously a whole range of factors relating to the applicant, including the security of his employment, the extent of his debts and other commitments, his credit records for the last five years or more and, perhaps the most crucial of all, the percentage mortgage bond that is required,” says Van Alphen. “Any evidence of reckless or irresponsible spending will make the securing of a loan still more difficult.” In the coming year, she says 100% loans may well be restricted to first-time home buyers, and very few will qualify for sub-prime loans. “The vast majority of borrowers will, in fact, find themselves paying 0.5% to 2% above prime," she says "And any applicant whose accounts show that, after paying his bond and meeting his other commitments, he has very little surplus cash

left, will probably have to scale down his loan requirements.” In these conditions, Van Alphen says the role of the bond originator will be more crucial than ever - especially if, as every good originator does, he or she deals with all the banks to get the best available deals for clients. “It is important to realise that origination companies usually offer a free prequalification service to potential home buyers. If people take the decision to cut out a wide range non-essential expenses and focus on their fundamental needs, they almost invariably discover that they can save - even in tough economic times - and, by getting on the property owning ladder, in time they end up with a highly satisfactory asset base.” –Property24.com

TUKS YOUNG GUNS WIN THE YOUNG GUNS FINAL Tuks outmuscled UJ 47-24 at UJ Stadium to win the Young Guns Final. Tuks were off to a perfect start when Jordan Holgate crashed through beneath the posts for Tuks first score of the match. UJ soon equalised with a try of their own in the 11th minute, by No. 8 Morney Moos.

The score remained 8-8 going into the 20th minute strategy break. But in the 32nd minute Tuks made their possession count as they scored their second try of the match, after flyhalf Christo Hamman broke through the UJ defence. Hamman scored his second and FNB Tuks third just minutes later, sending his team into half-time with a 21-8 lead. Tuks used their wings well and enjoyed most of the possession again in the opening minutes of the second half. They spent a lot of time in UJ's 22 and pressure told as three unanswered tries put FNB Tuks 398 ahead with 26 minutes to play.
