Staff Reporter
African Methodist Episcopal Church Ga-Rankuwa District celebrated Founders Day at Agnes B Hilderbrand church in Mabopane Block A (Boekenhout) under Presiding Elder L S Moobi and Host Pastor RDS Nkopodi on Sunday, 21st February 2016. It is a norm that every year in the AME churches the event of this nature gets celebrated. The Ga-Rankuwa District is made of 8 circuits of churches. When we talk about the AME church we should also remember inter alia Ms Charlotte Mannya Maxeke, the first African woman leader from South Africa to obtain a B.Sc and to be made a probation officer. She also played a part in the amalgamation of the Ethopian Church and African Methodist Episcopal church. Masses from all these circuits came to witness the history of the church. The celebration was graced by West Conference Brother Setlakalane Mokou, WMS President from Mokone Conference Sister Maureen Tilodi and the
President of Lay Organisation from Mokone Conference, Brother Benjy Mfolo. Mrs Mmasello Sekhukhune gave a brief history of divisions within the church among other, Woman Missionary Society, Richard Allen Young Adult Council, etc within the church. She highlighted the history of the origin of Woman Missionary society. “In 1893 Bishop Henry Michael Turner organised women to form the Woman Missionary Society” Said Mrs Mmasello Sekhukhune. “In the 1960s black people were removed from Lady Selbourne by then government. People moved to different areas such as Mamelodi, Attridgeville and Ga-Rankuwa. Eventually Reverend Monageng came in Ga-Rankuwa and managed to get a plan for the church that has been built in Zone 4 which is called Mokone Temple AME Church” She Concluded.
