A

male aged 21 years old was arrested on 18 March for murder that occurred on 31 October 2015. The suspect was allegedly part of a mob that killed 30-year-old male with an axe, hammer and stones. The deceased was killed after her aunt screamed for help from community members, claiming that she is being raped. When community members came to rescue her they broke deceased burglar door and started to assault him until police came to the scene of crime and rescued the deceased who passed away at George Mkhari Hospital. “The community members who participated in the murder discovered later that the aunt was not raped, said Constable Chabangu.” The suspect will appear at Ga-Rankuwa magistrate court.

our people are on the run after they robbed a pensioner of R50000 after claiming to be government officials. Police have launched a manhunt for two men and two women who stole R50 000 from a pensioner in Rosslyn.

Provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the victim allegedly opened the doors to his Soshanguve home last year, to people claiming to be officials from the Department of Labour. “Two suspects entered the house while the other two remained in the vehicle.

He was informed that he needed to transfer his pension money to another account.” The 58-year-old man accompanied the bogus officials to a bank in Rosslyn where he was told to apply for a new bankcard, he said. “One of the suspects convinced him to withdraw R50 000 to buy building materials as he was renovating his house. After withdrawing the money, they drove with him and left him in Hercules. He never saw them again.”

Loate Station Commander Colonel Lelaka, social crime coordinator Constable Moholane and all Loate sector managers had a business crime prevention meeting with Winterveld business owners. Business owners were advised to install alarms, CCTV cameras, safes and they were also advised to report crime immediately so that investigating officers, fingerprint officers and other role players can visit the scene of crime in time before the scene is tampered. Businesses owners requested police visibility around their business.

Joel Malebogo Sindane an ANC ward councilor was arrested by the Pretoria North police on Tuesday and appeared in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate's Court on Thursday when his case was postponed to 24 March. He appeared in court to face a charge of conspiracy to murder after he was arrested in connection to a hit list to kill 11 of his own party members in Mabopane. He was denied bail, and will be remanded in custody pending further investigations. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Rebecca Phathlane said: “He was arrested at his home in Mabopane. “He is facing a charge of conspiracy to commit murder.”

“We are still waiting for information of what exactly his charges are all about. We will only be able to comment once we know exactly what is happening,” he said. The hit list, which included the name of a Tshwane metro member of the mayoral committee, started circulating towards the end of last year. According to police, Sindane is the second suspect to be arrested in connection with the list. The first suspect was arrested on 3 November last year, and charged with conspiracy and incitement to commit serious crime.

MISSING PERSON FOUND

The missing school girl, Lethabo Siphesihle Mongake who is 14 years old was found on 16 March at her friends parental home in Slovoville after Detective Warrant officer Phatshwane followed a lead from his investigation.

The community gave information after reading pamphlets, newspapers and heard the story on radio.

GAUTENG INCREASES SUPPORT FOR MATRICS Staff Reporter

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says the department will this year implement the Secondary School Improvement Programme (SSIP) to provide additional support to Grade 12 learners in 460 township schools. “This will provide supplementary tuition to approximately 73 000 Grade 12 learners at 168 SSIP sites across the province,” said the MEC. He was briefing the media on progress made to improve the quality of learning and teaching. The MEC said the current enrolment in public schools stands at 2 326 584 learners, which shows an increase of 64 265 learners from 2015 figures. He said all learners have now been placed in Gauteng schools. He said seven new schools were opened on day one of the 2016 academic year. A total of 39 426 secondary school chairs and 40 620 desks were delivered. Primary schools received 76 571 chairs and 40 841 desks. “Those in need of scholar transport had access to a bus and the school nutrition programme started on time. We grappled with the challenge of over 10 000 unplaced learners but can now report that all learners, especially Grade 1, are in the classroom,” he said. The MEC said the department strives to ensure that all learners in the province have access to quality education in a system where all learners and schools are technology savvy and acquire the skills needed for success in the 21st century. However, he said more than 100 smart boards have been stolen from schools since the installation of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) programme in the Grade 12 classrooms in 377 Schools in July 2015. “Of these, 29 were stolen in Johannesburg Central, 20 in Tshwane South, 18 in Johannesburg North, 17 in Johannesburg South and 14 in Johannesburg West. More than 4 000 tablets are still with learners,” said the MEC. - SAnews.gov.za

TRUCK HIJACKER NABBED

A suspected truck hijacker was arrested in Soshanguve over the weekend, police said on Monday. Spokesperson Lieutenant Sarah Lesabane said two other men were still at large following the hijacking. “On Saturday around 09:00 a 41-year-old bakery driver was approached by three men in Soshanguve Block PP while waiting for his crew who were delivering bread inside a shop.” “One of them pointed a firearm at him and instructed him to get out of the truck. As he did, the three men left with the truck,” she said.

Lesabane said police received a tip-off about the men and a chase ensued when the Loate Police members joined in. “The truck was recovered at a certain stand. The 20-year-old suspect was arrested in the process and a pellet gun used to commit the crime was recovered,” Lesabane added. The arrested man will appear before Soshanguve Magistrate's Court soon, she said.

BUSINESS DYNAMIC ENTREPRENEURS Richard John Pelwana Maponya, “the father of black retail” in South Africa, is an entrepreneur and property developer who, over the years, has established a substantial business empire in the Johannesburg suburb of Soweto.

Maponya was born in the Limpopo village of Lenyenye on December 24, 1926. Though he trained as a teacher, his first job was as a stock-taker at a clothing retail store in the Johannesburg central business district. Maponya's manager took the 24-year-old under his wing, providing him with soiled cloth and offcuts that the budding entrepreneur had made up into clothes and sold in Soweto.

Though Maponya's clothing retail business was closed down by the apartheid authorities, he was armed with the business savvy and determination to make his mark in the South African retail sector. Using the money he had saved from the short-lived business, Maponya, together with his wife Marina, opened a dairy products shop and delivery service in Soweto that employed 100 bicycle delivery men.

Maponya's dairy business soon expanded, becoming a general provisions store. In time, Maponya ventured into other parts of Soweto, exploring business

ventures in sectors as varied as the motor, construction, retail and service industries. His empire grew to include a car-rental agency, horse-racing stables and stud farm, funeral parlour and business services division.

One of his most recent accomplishments was the development of the R450-million Maponya Mall in Soweto – one of the biggest in the country.

Maponya's family is at the centre of his business today.

Movie: The Other Side of the Door Cast: Sarah Wayne Callies, Jeremy Sisto Director: Johannes Roberts

A family lives an idyllic existence abroad until a tragic accident takes the life of their young son.

The inconsolable mother learns of an ancient ritual that will bring him back to say a final goodbye. She travels to an ancient temple, where a door serves as a mysterious portal between two worlds. But, when she disobeys a sacred warning to never open that door, she upsets the balance between life and death. The Other Side of the Door has a number of good things going for it. It is set in 'exotic' India, there's a creepy Hindu sect who linger around cremation sites and a really scary looking fourarmed supernatural creature that you wouldn't want to encounter alone at night. Sadly though, the film doesn't live up to its full potential as it relies on overused scare tactics such as a haunting and possession. During a holiday in India, American couple Maria (Sarah Wayne Callies) and Michael (Jeremy Sisto) decide to relocate permanently when Maria discovers she's pregnant. Six years later tragedy strikes the family when their son Olivier (Logan Creran) dies in an accident. The couple are dealing with their loss and grief and trying to raise their youngest daughter Lucy (Sofia Rosinsky).Maria who is wrestling with guilt tries to take her own life and flashback scenes reveal Olivier's tragic ending. Housekeeper Piki (Suchitra Pillai) who has also lost a child offers Maria a chance to say her final goodbye to Oliver. She tells her the story about an ancient temple in her village where people can communicate with the dead through the doors. There is one catch though, do not open the door. Maria doesn't heed her warning (and no this is not a spoiler) and Oliver's deranged spirit follows her own and causes all kinds of mayhem. Callies (Prison Break, Walking Dead) really tries hard to give a good performance. She embodies the grieving, desperate mother to a T. The spotlight is on her and everyone else is the supporting cast. Sisto (Six Feet Under, Law & Order) doesn't leave a lasting impression and is cut out of most of the action. The story isn't anything new and while it starts out strong it falls flat as it delves into cliché horror territory. Sensitive viewers might find this hard to watch while hardcore horror fans might snicker at the attempt to cause a scare.

CHIEFS LACKING CONFIDENCE – TOVEY Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Neil Tovey believes that the Phefeni Glamour Boys have been lacking confidence recently, following their sixth consecutive game without finding the back of the net. The Absa Premiership reigning champions have played more than 540 minutes of competitive football without scoring a goal, something which concerns the 1996 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning skipper as far as the team morale is concerned.
