Mayoral Matric Awards: Class of 2015

Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon one can use to change the world." In supporting this statement on 12 January 2015, the Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Cllr Kgosientso Ramokgopa, hosted the Mayoral Matric Awards ceremony to celebrate Tshwane matriculants who excelled in their 2015 examinations. Guests from government departments, commissions, non-government organisations, education institutions and parents joined the celebration. In his speech, Cllr Ramokgopa ensured the attendees that the City of Tshwane would continue to advance conditions that are conducive for Tshwane's learners and educators. He also mentioned that movements such as #FEESMUSTFALL should motivate us to ensure that disadvantaged learners get access to education. Although 19 schools in Tshwane achieved an average of below 60%, 42,5% of the learners qualified for

entry to bachelor degree courses and 12 339 distinctions were achieved. A 2014 award recipient, Sigourney Lishman, also addressed the guests. She encouraged those who were about to begin their tertiary journey to work harder than before and not miss any classes, as tertiary education is different from high school education. Gauteng's best achiever, Minet Uys, said the support she got from her family and educators, hard work and determination were the reasons she made it thus far. Uys, a learner of Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool, scored eight distinctions and plans to study chemical engineering at the University of Pretoria in 2016. Her two runners-up were Lara Loock from Hoërskool Waterkloof and Nadia Verster from Hoërskool Garsfontein. The three received gifts and bursaries from the City.

Amongst the matric achievers were twins and triplets. The twins, Kelebogile and Lethabo Selema, obtained five distinctions each.

They ascribed their achievement to their family's support and encouragement to study and stay focused. Although they will be studying at different tertiary institutions, they are excited about the journey ahead. They have had a tough year, as they individually faced different challenges, but hard work, focus and discipline from day one were their recipe for reaching their goals in life. Certificates, bursaries and gifts were awarded to the matriculants at the ceremony to congratulate them for representing the capital city through their outstanding performance and to inspire them to greater heights as they join institutions of higher learning.

Thousands of young people came in numbers to hear their leader address them for the first time in Soshanguve. The Nkandla matter is still giving our president nightmares, since the opposition are not wiling to let it sleep.

Mabopane PCO hosted the Class Of 2015 award ceremony on the 29th January, recognizing 21 learners who performed well last year. The state of the nation address is around the corner and we hope all the talk will come with full implementation.

SA ready for local government elections

Addressing thousands of members at the "Kgalemela lenyatso" rally at Giant Stadium in Soshanguve, Youth League president, Collen Maine told the crowd that they must protect the organization and be careful not be distracted, as the local government elections approach.

He had a strong message for opposition parties, particularly the Economic Freedom Fighters. "If you fight with Zuma you are fighting with the youth league, and South Africans who have voted for him, and the ANC with more than 60 % majority. The country will be defended.

We cannot allow Julius Malema and his monkeys to run our country amok and turn this country into a banana republic." Maine also warned the EFF not to disrupt the State of the Nation address. "Those who seek to disrupt the State of the Nation must prepare themselves for a civil war. We want to assure the country that the youth league will attend the State of the Nation address to defend the nation and the revolution. We wish to inform the Speaker of the parliament not to organize security on that day. The youth league will physically remove wood workers from parliament," said Maine

On 05 February Temba cluster Brigadier Makgwane with Loate station commander Colonel Lelaka, Rietgat station commander colonel Hlatswayo, Temba head of support colonel Thine, Hammanskraal station commander colonel Tselapedi and Dube station commander captain Mabale. handed new promotion ranks to eleven members. Five (5) warrant officers were promoted to Lieutenant rank and six (6) captains were promoted to rank of Major. Cluster commander gave members a word of encouragement and told them that the rank comes with responsibilities.

She also emphasise that they must work harder to encourage other members.

It's all systems go for the 2016 Local Government Elections. This is according to the Independent Electoral Commission's (IEC) Chief Electoral Commissioner Mosotho Moepya. The 2016 municipal elections were officially launched in Midrand last month. Every five years South Africa holds the Local Government Elections.

Local government is made up of municipalities, which are run by councils. “Given the level of discussions in the country, there will be increase in the turnout. We will prepare for every registered voter and we hope they will come,” said Moepya. There are currently 25 million registered voters against a voting age population currently estimated at about 34.1 million by Statistics South Africa. Of the approximately 9.1 million eligible voters who are not registered, more than 80 per cent are under 35 years old. An interactive digital game (IXSA) in which voters must register and vote - first developed for the 2014 national elections - has been enhanced and updated for the 2016 Municipal Elections and is available for download free from the Apple and Android app stores.

This is aimed at encouraging youth participation in particular. “Elections are an opportunity for the youth to participate,” said Moepya. The IEC expects to have 22,600 voting stations across the country, an increase from just over 20,000 in 2011. Although the election date has not been officially announced, South Africans must go out in their numbers to either register or to confirm their details. Finding your correct voting station. Auditor-general Vindicates The City Of Tshwane Staff Reporter

The City of Tshwane announced that it is elated to announce its fifth unqualified audit report in a row since the current administration came into power in 2011. The Auditor-General tabled his final report at a council meeting. “The City condemns and rejects allegations peddled in the media by the Democratic Alliance in recent days about the misuse and misappropriation of funds by this administration. No such findings were made by the Auditor-General, thus making such allegations unfounded and malicious. The relevant provisions in the MFMA relating to the tabling of the audit report in Council by the A-G (Section 127) (4)(a)) and the Executive Mayor (Section 127 (2)), the legislated timelines for the tabling of the audit report have been fully complied with” said executive mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa. “Nothing in law prevents any auditee from engaging officially with the office of the A-G in relation to the audit process underway. Such engagements are standard practice to ensure compliance with the timelines in the MFMA with a view to finalising the audit report. Therefore, the allegation of undue influence undermines the integrity of the Office of the Auditor-General. We refute the thumb-sucked and manufactured figure of R4billion expenditure cited by some media reports, even before the A-G had released his audit report. The figure is unfounded, without substance and devoid of any truth. As a responsible City, we respect the independence of the Chapter 9 institutions, such as the Office of the Auditor-General, hence the City's approach to remain reticent on commenting on reports purporting to be those of the Auditor-General. COT remains committed to good governance and will continue in our endeavour to achieve a clean audit.

This administration has been prudent with public finances since it came into office five years ago, and today's release of the audit report confirms our frugal respect for the public purse and good governance”, said executive mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa.

Avoid late registration of births Staff Reporter

The Department of Home Affairs has put in place strict measures for parents who do not register their children's birth on time. From January 2016 parents who register the birth of their children after 30 days will have to prove to the Department of Home Affairs that they are really South African citizens. All children born in South Africa must be registered within 30 days of their birth, in terms of the Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1992. All births registered after 30 days are regarded as a late registration of birth (LRB). Register children within 30 days To ensure that your child's birth is registered within 30 days of birth decide on your baby's name in time to avoid delaying the registration. The Department of Home Affairs provides online birth registration services, at over 300 health facilities and over 400 offices across the country.

Check with your health facility if it's connected for online birth registration or visit your local Home Affairs office. At least one of the child's parents has to be a South African citizen, when the child is born, for the child to be registered as a South African. If neither parent is a South African citizen the child cannot be registered as a South African citizen. However, the birth of the child can still be registered. To do this visit Home Affairs and complete a DHA19 form, which is a birth notice for non-citizens. The registration of birth is the first right on which access to other human rights and basic services is dependent. A child registered on the national population register will have guaranteed access to various opportunities including healthcare, education, social services and social grants. By registering births on time citizens will also ensure the credibility and security of South Africa's national population register. An identity document is a gateway to many possibilities including job opportunities and education and entitles citizens to exercise their rights, including registering on the voters roll and participating and voting in national and local elections.

Taxi drivers' wages under scrutiny The Department of Labour has launched an investigation into the salaries of taxi drivers and rank marshals, calling on taxi industry workers to make submissions. The department said it has received complaints from drivers who claim their employers are not complying with the taxi industry's sectoral determination. The minimum wage for drivers was pegged at R2 847.01, while rank marshals should be pocketing R2 275.81 per month.

Department of Labour spokesperson Mokgadi Pela said public hearings would soon begin to set the new wages. He said they were inviting stakeholders to make their inputs. “The taxi drivers complain about the long hours they work, that they are not paid properly and there is no compliance with sectoral determination on the part of operators. “They (taxi drivers) also say they have no contracts, no deductions for the unemployment insurance fund and no payslips. They have appealed to the Minister [Mildred Oliphant] to assist,” Pela said. Meanwhile, the Minister on Wednesday announced a wage increment for the farming and forestry sectors.

As from 1 March 2016, the minimum wage increases are adjusted as follows: an hour rate of R14.25, up from R13.37 a weekly rate of R641.32, which is up from R601.61 and a monthly rate of R2778.83, up from R2606.78 A daily wage for a farm worker is R128.26, up from R120.32, who works nine hours per day.According to the department, the wage adjustments are to ensure that workers' earnings keep pace with the rising cost of living while boosting the purchasing power which benefits the economy. To calculate minimum wage increases, the department applied consumer price index (CPI), excluding owner's equivalent rent, which is lower than what the department used to apply which was CPI for quintile 1, as published by Stats SA for a specific period. – SAnews.gov.za

Artist: Rihanna Album: Anti Label: Roc Nation

Artist: Elton John Album: Wonderful Crazy Night Label: Island

For much of 2015, repeated delays and a lack of solid information started to make Rihanna's Anti feel like pop's mythical creature. Now that we know it's real, we can hear the singer's eighth LP for what it is: a sprawling masterpiece of psychedelic soul that's far more straightforward than its tangled rollout. The three full years since 2012's Unapologetic – the longest break between releases in Rihanna's career – turned out to be exactly what she needed to make a rich full-length statement.

After more than a decade as a superstar of the singles chart, Rihanna has become an album artist. Anti is first and foremost an experience built on vibes. Where previous LPs were built around clear peaks, here the songs fit together into a fluid landscape of seamless transitions – check the flow on the excellent mid-album run of after-hours joints from "Desperado" to "Woo" to "Needed Me." Every song sounds like our collective fantasy of Rihanna: a carefree island girl lounging in a cloud of smoke, asserting a brand of independence that's wholly her own.

Elton John opens his 32nd studio album by looking back in delight. "Some things you don't forget/Some things just take a hold," he sings with relish in the title song, a jaunty recollection of lasting love at first sight. The music framing that glee – "Loose clothes and a cool, cool drink/A greasy breeze from the chicken stand," conjured by John's lifelong lyric partner, Bernie Taupin – is retrospective too. John's roller-coaster piano figure and R&B solo evoke the glitter-gospel charge of exuberant early-Seventies songs like "Honky Cat" and "Crocodile Rock." John, 68, has rarely strayed far from that template. But there is a striking vigor and engagement here, especially for an artist of his vintage. He animates Taupin's images as if they are his memories, with convincing, grateful zeal.

Wonderful Crazy Night is the latest stage in an extended return to form for John – his third straight album with co-producer T Bone Burnett after 2010's The Union, a sublime collaboration with Leon Russell, and 2013's The Diving Board.

BOOK REVIEW TITLE: Hard Choices AUTHOR: Hillary Clinton PUBLISHER: Simon & Schuster They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but what about its weight? If you struggle to hold it in one hand and get cramp holding it in two then that book is telling you something about itself. It's saying, “Look out, I'm a work of some heft not to be lightly dismissed.” If ever a book deserves to be called a tome it is Hard Choices by Hillary Rodham Clinton. At a stupefying 596 pages, Hard Choices contains Clinton's reflections on her time as US secretary of state, but it is many things besides a memoir. For instance, it is heavy enough to hurl at an erring husband and do some serious damage without actually committing manslaughter; always a bonus in the Clinton household. The book claims to be about the past, but really it's about the future. At 66 years of age, the author is a former first lady and a former secretary of state. Although she has yet to declare that she will stand, in Hard Choices Clinton makes clear in every calculated sentence that her interest is not in being a former anything, but a future president of the United States.

Movie: Dirty Grandpa Cast: Robert De Niro, Zac Efron Director: Dan Mazer

Jason Kelly is one week away from marrying his boss’s über-controlling daughter, putting him on the fast track toward a partnership at the law firm. However, when the straight-laced Jason is tricked into driving his foul-mouthed grandfather, Dick, to Daytona, Florida, for spring break, his pending nuptials are suddenly in jeopardy. Between riotous frat parties, bar fights, and an epic night of karaoke, Dick is on a quest to live his life to the fullest and bring Jason along for the ride. Ultimately, on the wildest journey of their lives, "dirty" Grandpa and his uptight grandson discover they can learn from one another and form the bond they never had. Dirty Grandpa may come as a shock to some, as a laugh to most and as a down right offense to others. Why? All I can say is this: It is hands down one of the most vulgar, over the top, sexual movies I have ever watched. When squeaky clean Jason Kelly (Zac Efron) is fooled into taking his grandfather (Robert De Niro) to Spring break, his world is literally turned upside down and everything, according to him, that could go wrong does go wrong. What’s at stake?

The “perfect life” with the “perfect wife” and the “perfect job”, now does that sound like something to look forward to or what?!

Unfortunately when talking about the film and looking at the cast, one would think ‘hey this could be fun to watch’, however Dan Mazer took what could’ve been a great comedy and turned it into a harsh, crude escapade of chaos. Dick is only after one thing and while Robert De Niro absolutely nails portraying an old, perverted former army general it is not exactly something to be proud of. Yes his one-liners were quick and witty but they tend to borderline between funny and seriously offensive. It’s no surprise that the film will have you asking why such a respected actor who has portrayed award winning characters in numerous films chose to downgrade in Dirty Grandpa. But then again, De Niro has pretty much earned the right to do whatever the hell he wants and no matter what he does, he makes sure he does it properly!

Although I would love to know the amount of times the words “fuck”, “vagina” and “dick” are said throughout the film I have accepted that while very unreserved, Dirty Grandpa still got me laughing out loud more than once.

Chiefs reveal CAF squad Kaizer Chiefs have announced their squad to play in the 2016 CAF Champions League. According to the club's website, Chiefs decided to register 26 players for now, which will leave four spaces available for June, when more players can be added for the group stages. Amakhosi will embark on the CAF Champions League journey with the preliminary round first-leg against Comoros' Volcan de Moroni on Sunday, February 14. This match is scheduled to take place at the Stade Said Mohamed Cheikh in Mitsamiouli, Comoros. Kick-Off is at 14:00 (SA time). The second-leg will take place at the Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, February 27. No tickets can be bought as yet for the home fixture. We will inform supporters as soon as possible when the tickets will become available. According to the CAF Champions League regulations, “the jerseys of the players must be numbered from 1 to 30… for the whole duration of the competition.”

Proteas batsman Hashim Amla says he would welcome the addition of Neil McKenzie as batting consultant to the team. Amla was responding to reports that McKenzie was set to be announced as Cricket South Africa's new batting consultant. McKenzie, who recently retired from cricket after the Highveld Lions agreed to release him from his contract, is currently playing in the Masters Champions League in Dubai. The 40-year-old told the Sunday Times that CSA wants him to work and travel with the national team when needed, including a trip to the ICC World T20 in March. “I can't say if it's going to happen, but if that proves to be the case, then I'll be very happy,” Amla told Netwerk24. “I've played with Neil a lot and he is a highly respected player and a person who will definitely be an asset to the national set-up. “He is a student of the game and with his experience he'll be able to add value.”- Sports24.co.za
