PROFILE - FREDRICK HEDBERG In June 2017 I successfully completed my Master’s in planning, specialising in urban design, at Oxford Brookes University, and in June 2016, I successfully completed my undergraduate BA degree in City and Regional Planning at the same university. My studies have covered live projects in the local community of Oxfordshire, some of these include Oxpens, Wood Farm, Grandpont, Thames, Summertown and Cowley Road. Other projects outside of Oxford include Brixton in London and Pelotas in Brazil. I have been able to learn various skills such as researching, group project work, urban design, writing briefs/reports, working on planning applications and using a variety of software packages. I am currently working for JSA Architects as a graduate town planner. The company deals with both the architecture and planning side of city design. I hold a Licentiate membership with the Royal Town Planning Institute and would like to work towards becoming a Chartered Town Planner. I have dual nationality, Swedish and Australian. Most of my primary and secondary education was completed in France and Switzerland, bilingual programme in English and French (GCSE, French Brevet and International Baccalaureate Diploma). I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills I have acquired in an urban design work position.

EXPERIENCE JSA Architects August 2017 - Present

I've enriched my knowledge of the planning system by submitting applications, dealing with clients, going on site visits, writing up Design and Access Statements as well as Feasibility Reports. I have developed a strong work ethic and I am able to multitask successfully on different jobs.

Bluestone Planning July 2016 - September 2016

Shadowed a planning officer and worked with clients. I was involved in producing a SketchUp model, attending important meetings, researched planning documents, as well as putting together background information on areas.

Offer Holder’s Day December 2014 - June 2017

This role involved helping applicants find their way around the campus on open day. I also delt with short tours around the campus, highlighting various components of the University.

VOLUNTEERING Gardening Oxford City Council July 2013

Worked with a group of volunteers on several projects for the City Council in which I contributed to improving green spaces and parks. I learned about open spaces, parklands, ecology and conservation in Oxford. This helped me improve and develop my skills in terms of manual and team work.

RESEARCH

July 2007 and July 2008

Santander Student Project April 2015

I was part of a small team from the local youth club that redesigned gardens of rundown houses which had previously been occupied by homeless people in Geneva, Switzerland. This work made me understand the socio-economic differences present in today’s society as well as understanding the value of organisations helping the less fortunate.

This project was enabled through successfully bidding in a student grant of around ÂŁ2,000. It ran in parallel with the Brazil Urban Design Study. The project looked at the influence B.U.D.S. has had on my workability when travelling to another country. It also focused on exploring the sensory experiences that are found in Brazilian culture in the form of music in urban areas. The project demonstrated that in Brazil, there is no need for special allocated areas for music to thrive (unlike in European countries) as Brazilians congregate anywhere in public to enjoy music.

I enjoy reading various books from fiction (The Silmarillion) to short stories (A Twist of the Knife), to prose poetry (Citizen: An American Lyric). Reading a variety of genres interests me and helps me to immerse myself in a good story and further enhance my values thanks to authors such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Travelling Travel has always been part of my life since my family would visit relatives in Australia and Sweden. During these trips I would stop over in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Dubai and Denmark. I even took part in the Tall Ships Race (2011) on a 71m long Gaff Schooner 3 sailing from Norway (Starvanger) to Sweden (Halmstad). Thanks to Oxford Brookes Univeristy, I was part of two educational trips to Amsterdam (February) and Brazil (April) in 2015.

MASTER'S DISSERTATION

X

2017

BACKGROUND This research project was a master’s level dissertation with guidance from a supervisor. The topic chosen was urban soundscapes. I conducted an in-depth literature review which served as a contextual framework for my research. I carried out a unique methodology called the soundwalk in order to assess different soundscapes in Oxford. I learned to analyse empirical data and to create basic design principles for urban designers and architects to use. Through this work, I have managed to also contribute to the academic community.

Research Question: how can soundscape design help deliver good public places?

Large Scale Independent Research Project Research Methodology Design Focus Groups Urban Soundscapes Soundscape Design Time Management Design Principles

The study focuses on the sense of hearing from urban sensory experience in public places. A research question was created. The project started by understanding how urban soundscapes are formed.

LOCATION

L2

L3

L4

L5

The method used for the research project required participants to experience five different locations, complete a questionnaire about the sounds they heard and then walked to the next location. 12

The method used is called a soundwalk which takes selected participants to different acoustic environments (1 & 2). From the results of the questionnaires, design principles were drawn up and tested through the means of focus groups (3).

1

These principles are simplified recommendations that urban designers may use as inspiration in order to produce higher quality urban soundscapes. These have been grouped under four themes (The Urban Fabric, The Civic Nature, Pathways, and City Life) (4). They also have different time frames and scale of impacts on a city (short term vs. long term, and specific areas vs. districts vs. city). 2

PLACE IDENTITY VIDEO

X

2017

BACKGROUND This project investigated how the identity of a place is formed through urban memory. It enabled me to discover the theory linking these two elements together and to be able to use Oxford as a precedent. A Cannon 600D and RODE VideoMic were used for the shooting of the video. With video production and editing skills, I was able to produce a seven minute video on the topic, which includes three interviews that underpins urban memory to place identity in Oxford. The final video was uploaded on YouTube. When a city changes shape over time it becomes part of urban history; this can be seen when a city is growing and thus transforming itself. A city becomes part of the realm of memory when events occur within it. This creates memorable moments for its citizens. SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE • • • • • • •

LOCATION

Breaking down the theory further, a locus (or place) becomes part of urban history if nothing happens in it. But when an event occurs it becomes part of urban memory. Events can vary from parades, festivals, to individuals busking in the street.

14

These are some stills from the video with the three participants who were interviewed for this project. The video is entitled Place Identity: Oxford's Urban Memory. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FW0YCWiQcNc

With events in a place creates feelings from people. These feelings shape their memory of a place.

This memory can be the key for memories of the past and of potential futures than can help construct future places.

OXPENS MASTERPLAN

X

1

2016

BACKGROUND The project aimed at creating a sustainable development for the West of Oxford. The Oxpens masterplan was created through seven design objectives and their corresponding design actions. This project enabled me to further enhance my graphic skills by making a masterplan, side sections, plans, and other graphic forms for the report. The plans and side sections are numbered in order to show their location on the masterplan. Different inspirations for the graphics of these areas have been added to show how they influenced my creativity in designing for the built environment.

IMPLEMENTATION PROJECT BACKGROUND The objective was to incorporate a green corridor on Botley Road for different reasons (aesthetics, greening, pedestrianisation, etc...). A historical, morphological and S.W.O.T. analysis was provided for the area. Case studies of green corridors already existing in the world were analysed in which interventions were extracted for Botley Road. Stakeholders, policies and financial cost were looked into in order to provide Botley Road with a green corridor. This report is only the first part of the implementation process.

BRAZIL URBAN DESIGN STUDY

X

2015

BACKGROUND This study took place in Brazil and aimed at creating design codes for a site in Pelotas. The project started in Oxford and continued on an international level by working with students from Universidade Federal de Pelotas. I delivered an urban design workshop at the Brazilian university. Its aim was to produce a rough masterplan using design codes. In the study, I understood international boundaries and how to overcome. This project also enabled me to receive the Santander Scholarship certificate.

GRANDPONT MASTERPLAN BACKGROUND The Grandpont site is located just south of Oxford’s city centre next to the River Thames. It is currently parkland. The aim of the project was to create a masterplan for the area. This consisted of examining the area’s responsive environment, morphology, and views in and out of the area. Elements of townscape and imageability have been included in the scheme. Various ideas from other parts of the world (both on a physical and community level) have been used in the scheme.

A SketchUp model of the site has been created in order to show how the masterplan would look. Red blocks symbolise buildings with various personalisations to create different styles in the area. Yellow blocks symbolises terraced housing. The maps show the initial design process for Grandpont which then developed into the masterplan seen below. Various ideas and community activities have been laid out for the reader in a Swedish "Smörgåsbord "fashion. This section displays design and community inspirations such as Amsterdam’s Borneo-Eiland and public health projects such as the Let’s Move campaign of 2011. 23

WOOD FARM MASTERPLAN BACKGROUND This project aimed to produce a masterplan for Wood Farm in Oxford. The idea of the scheme was to retrofit the tower block with vertical greenery and to add a smaller tower next to it in order to have a gradual ascending skyline. The park and the area around it were revitalized for an aesthetic neighbourhood. This project has taught me the essential basic principles for urban design as well the crucial softwares to use to demonstrate my learning. It also taught me the creativity of page layout as well as morphological maps.

BLUESTONE PLANNING

X

BACKGROUND My internship at Bluestone Planning was an enriching experience of the planning system. I managed to understand how planning applications were made as well as meeting various clients in Wiltshire and consulting with them. I produced a SketchUp model for a site in West Oxfordshire that is currently under the application process seeking to build a number of dwellings. I attended various meetings in which I took notes. As a bonus, I was able to see more of the areas around Swindon.
