PROFILE - FREDRICK HEDBERG I am a Master’s student in planning, specialising in urban design, at Oxford Brookes University. In June of 2016, I successfully completed my undergraduate BA degree in City and Regional Planning at the same university. My studies have covered live projects in the local community of Oxfordshire, some of these include Oxpens, Wood Farm, Grandpont, Thames, Summertown and Cowley Road. Other projects outside of Oxford include Brixton in London and Pelotas in Brazil. I have been able to learn various skills such as researching, group project work, urban design, writing briefs/reports, working on planning applications and using a variety of software packages. I am proficient in Sketch-up, Wix, InDesign, Apple Software: Pages, Numbers, Keynotes and Final Cut Pro, Microsoft Office: Word, Excel and PowerPoint and semi-proficient in PremierPro, Photoshop, SPSS and ArcGIS. I hold a Licentiate membership with the Royal Town Planning Institute and would like to work towards becoming a Chartered Town Planner. I have dual nationality, Swedish and Australian. Most of my primary and secondary education was completed in France and Switzerland, bilingual programme in English and French (GCSE, French Brevet and International Baccalaureate Diploma). I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills I have acquired in a workplace setting and am therefore looking for work experience in a town planning office as an intern.

I enjoy reading various books from fiction (The Silmarillion) to short stories (A Twist of the Knife), to prose poetry (Citizen: An American Lyric). Reading a variety of genres interests me and helps me to immerse myself in a good story or to further enhance my values thanks to authors such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Travelling
Worked with a group of volunteers on several projects for the City Council in which I contributed to improving green spaces and parks. I learned about open spaces, parklands, ecology and conservation in Oxford. This helped me improve and develop my skills in terms of manual work and team work.
Lansdcape Gardening with Crossroads Church July 2007 and July 2008
I was part of a small team from the local youth club that redesigned gardens of rundown houses which had previously been occupied by homeless people in Geneva, Switzerland. This work made me understand the socio-economic differences present in today’s society as well as understanding the value of organisations helping the less fortunate.

RESEARCH Santander Student Project August 2015
This project was enabled through my successful bidding in a student grant of around ÂŁ2,000. It ran in parallel with the Brazil Urban Design Study. The project looked at the influence B.U.D.S. has had on my workability when travelling to another country. It also focused on exploring the sensory experiences that are found in Brazilian culture in the form of music in urban areas. The project demonstrated that in Brazil, there is no need for special allocated areas for music to thrive (unlike in European countries) as Brazilians congregate anywhere in public to enjoy music.
Travel has always been part of my life since my family would visit relatives in Australia and Sweden. During the trips we would stop over in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Dubai and Denmark. I even took part in the Tall Ships Race (2011) on a 71m long Gaff Schooner 3 sailing from Norway (Starvanger) to Sweden (Halmstad). Thanks to Oxford Brookes Univeristy, I was part of two educational trips to Amsterdam (February) and Brazil (Easter) in 2015.

OXPENS MASTERPLAN X 2016
1
BACKGROUND
The project aimed at creating a sustainable development for the West of Oxford. The Oxpens masterplan was created through seven design objectives and their corresponding design actions. This project enabled me to further enhance my graphic skills by making a masterplan, side sections, plans, and other forms of graphic for the report. The plans and side sections are numbered in order to show their location on the masterplan. Different inspirations for the graphics of these areas have been added to show how they influenced my creativity in designing for the built environment.

IMPLEMENTATION PROJECT X 2016 BACKGROUND
The objective was to incorporate a green corridor on Botley Road for different reasons (aesthetics, greening, pedestrianisation, etc...). A historical, morphological and S.W.O.T. analysis was provided for the area. Case studies of green corridors already existing in the world were analysed in which interventions were extracted for Botley Road. Stakeholders, policies and financial cost were looked into in order to provide Botley Road with a green corridor. This report is only the first part of the implementation process.

BRAZIL URBAN DESIGN STUDY X 2015 BACKGROUND
This study set in Brazil and aimed at creating design codes for a site in Pelotas. The project started in Oxford and continued on an international level by working with students from Universidade Federal de Pelotas. I delivered and urban design workshop at the Brazilian university. Its aim was to produce a rough masterplan using design codes. In the study, I understood international boundaries and how to overcome them to work with people from outside the U.K. This project also enabled me to receive the Santander Scholarship certificate.

Photos show various activities I did during the group's trip to Brazil from sitting at meetings, workshops, exploring the Rocinha, to playing football with favela children. The sketches represent various design codes that were created in my group during university workshops in Pelotas. The SketchUp model we created is the final design for the study area from the UFPEL students design codes. Screenshots of the Wix website I designed are also shown in order to give an idea of how the work was presented. This gave an interactive way of summarising the entirety of the urban study through a medium that everyone can access. GRANDPONT MASTERPLAN X 2014 BACKGROUND
The Grandpont site is located just south of Oxford’s city centre next to the River Thames. It is currently parkland. The aim of the project was to create a masterplan for the area. This consisted in examining the area’s responsive environment, morphology, and views in and out of the area. Elements of townscape and imageability have been included in the scheme. Various ideas from other parts of the world (both on a physical and community level) have been used in the scheme.

A ScetchUp model of the site has been created in order to show how the masterplan would look. Red blocks symbolise buildings with various personalisations to create different styles in the area. Yellow blocks symbolises terraced housing. The maps show the initial design process for Grandpont which then developed into the masterplan seen below them. Various ideas and community activities have been laid out for the reader in a Swedish Smorgasbord fashion. This section displays design and community inspirations such as Amsterdam’s Borneo-Eiland and public health projects such as the Let’s Move campaign of 2011.

WOOD FARM MASTERPLAN X 2014 BACKGROUND
This project aimed to produce a masterplan for Wood Farm in Oxford. The idea of the scheme was to retrofit the tower block with vertical greenery and to add a smaller tower next to it in order to have a gradual ascending skyline. The park and the area around it were revitalized for an aesthetic neighbourhood. This project has taught me the essential basic principles for urban design as well the crucial softwares to use to demonstrate my learning. It also taught me the creativity of page layout as well as morphological maps.

BLUESTONE PLANNING X 2016 BACKGROUND
My internship at Bluestone Planning was an enriching experience of the planning system. I managed to understand how planning applications were made as well as meeting various clients in Wiltshire and consulting with them. I produced a SketchUp model for a site in West Oxfordshire that is currently under the application process seeking to build a number of dwellings. I attended various meetings in which I took notes. As a bonus, I was able to see more of the areas around Swindon.
