In late May, wildlife managers in multiple states, including Virginia, began receiving reports of sick and dying birds that were exhibiting eye issues (swelling, crusts, discharge, etc.), along with neurological symptoms. No definitive cause(s) of illness or death have been determined. No human health or domestic livestock and poultry issues have been documented. As of mid-August, reports of sick and dead birds have declined in many jurisdictions,

and the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is lifting its previous recommendation to cease feeding birds in affected areas.

Virginia was one of the first states that received reports of birds displaying eye and neurological signs. Beginning in early June, the DWR, along with other local collaborating organizations, began documenting dead or sick bird reports and submissions to local wildlife rehabilitation hos-

pitals. From these data, the DWR was able to target its response guidance to the areas of Virginia most likely to be affected by this mortality event, which included Alexandria, Arlington, Clarke, Fairfax, Falls Church, Fauquier, Frederick, Loudoun, Manassas, Prince William, Shenandoah, Warren, and Winchester. The DWR recommended removal of bird feeders in these affected areas beginning in June in order to limit potential disease transmission.

Natural resource management agencies in the affected jurisdictions continue to work with diagnostic laboratories to investigate the cause(s) of this event. The U.S. Geological Survey’s National Wildlife Health Center, the University of Georgia Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study, the University of Pennsylvania Wildlife Futures Program, the Indiana Animal Disease Di-

agnostic Laboratory, and multiple state labs have been involved.

As reported previously, based on results received to date, the following pathogens have not been detected in any of the birds

tested: Salmonella and Chlamydia (bacteria); avian influenza virus, West Nile virus, coronaviruses, Newcastle disease virus, herpesviruses, and poxviruses; and Trichomonas parasites. Toxicol-

Residents that choose to feed birds or provide water in bird baths should remain vigilant for avian mortalities and consider the following best practice guidelines: • Clean feeders and bird baths at least once a week, then disinfect with a 10% bleach solution to prevent potential infectious disease spread between birds and other wildlife. After cleaning, rinse well with water and allow to air dry.

• Wear disposable gloves when handling bird feeders and baths and wash your hands when finished.

• When feeding birds, follow expert recommendations, such as those listed in Audubon Interna-

tional’s Guide to Bird Feeding.

• Keep pets away from sick or dead wild birds.

• Avoid handling wild birds. If you must do so, wear disposable gloves or place an inverted plastic bag over your hand to avoid direct contact with the bird. Dispose of dead birds in a closed plastic bag in household trash. Alternatively, you may bury bird carcasses at least 3 feet to prevent any disease transmission to scavenging animals.

• If you observe any additional bird mortalities in Virginia, submit a mortality event to the DWR via dwr.virginia.gov/wildlife/diseases/bird-mortality-reporting-

Bird mortality events are not uncommon. Several aspects make this particular event unique, including the extensive geographic scope, the duration of reported mortalities, and the fact that the initial reports were received from an urban area. The response and resulting recommendations to this and most all avian mortality events, however, is essentially the same. Affected birds are sent to a wildlife health laboratory for diagnostic investigation and residents of known affected areas are advised to minimize potential disease transmission by removing bird feeders and baths until the event has concluded. Once all of the diagnostic investigations in-

volving this event are complete, the DWR hopes to be able to better tailor its diagnostic investigative response and guidance to the public for future bird mortality events.

Wildlife disease investigations can be inherently challenging and sometimes are unable to identify a definitive cause(s). The DWR greatly appreciates the assistance of the public and cooperating localities and facilities during this event, and when additional significant diagnostic results come to light, updated information will be shared. By Carol Ballard Warren/Frederick County Report Approximately 30 members of family and friends gathered at the Henrico Baltimore Cemetery in Warren County that holds the graves of former and freed enslaved people on Saturday, August 21. The weather held, and feelings of community spirit and excitement to be a part of a momentous event were expressed by many.

They were there to witness and celebrate the transfer of the deed to the cemetery to brothers Wil-

liam and Lenox Baltimore III, giving them the opportunity to care for the place where Henrico, their great, great, great, great grandfather has been laid to rest.

Henrico Baltimore, who bought his parcel in 1870, and Emily Elzie were two of the first owners, when, after the Civil War, a free community was created, and several families were given the opportunity to buy property near where they had worked for others. They are both buried in the restored cemetery.

neglected state and began restoration work on the grounds in 2018 after he discovered the graves and artifacts from remnants of several cabins on the forested hill.

Jeff stood to address the respectful group of supporters before the signing ceremony.

“I didn’t find the cemetery,” he said. “It found me. I just wanted to clean it up, but it turned into a historical quest. In 1995, the original developer of Reliance Woods realized the importance of it and surveyed it out so it wouldn’t be touched by others.”

Before he began the restoration, he was convinced that people needed to remember that it is a forgotten community.

“People who lived there have been forgotten for a long time,” he said.

The three main goals he had were: to restore the cemetery; find out the history; locate a relative to give him permission to clean it up, (which he did after searching for

and contacting a relative in Harrisburg, Pa.,) and finally, to find existing family members and turn it back to them.

These have all been achieved, culminating with the ceremony signing over the deed to the Baltimore brothers on Saturday.

At first, he was mostly involved with cleaning up and restoring, removing fallen trees, clearing brush and then found, he said, “that it was part of history.”

“It’s been an ongoing learning experience, not for money or glory,” he added. “I didn’t know what a slave gravestone or a slave graveyard was. I learned all of this in whatever purpose the Good Lord gave me. It was the right thing to do, something that nobody but me could do.”

He named his quest the Genesis Project, he said, to bring something “dead” back to life.

Ellen Gant added her thoughts about what Jeff, who she calls Taylor, has done in the following tribute she created especially for the day.

She began to read, appearing to be moved at some of the verses.

“For one who gave so much for those gone yonder, you will be their shining light ever.

“This barren graveyard will never be the same, your ‘peeps’ will hear your footsteps in the sunset of day and in the moonlight of the night walking this graveyard each day, each week, every month, thinking of what you can do to give them the respect of beauty to be remembered.

When the deed was signed by both brothers and notarized by Pastor Dr. Diane Newman-Frye, Jeff held it up for everyone to see.

William Baltimore, of Ashburn, Va., who, about a month ago, was the first of the brothers to get in contact with Jeff, commented later, “Just to be there, the feeling was amazing. I wanted to really thank Jeff Taylor and the newspaper,” he began. “None of this would be possible and I never would have found my ancestor. If not for Jeff, it would have been bulldozed and built over.”

The connection to Jeff and the cemetery was made when his relative, Lisa Johnson posted on Facebook some information she had from one of the Warren/Frederick County Report articles about African American descendants of those in the Warren County cemetery.

William said he had known about their ancestor Henrico from a family tree he saw in elementary school and recently found death certificates from his descendants.

These were of two of William’s immediate great grandfathers.

William noted that four generations of his family were born and raised here, and he still has memories of visiting his grandfather Lenox and other family and enjoying seeing the mountains around Front Royal.

His immediate family lived in Prince George’s County during his childhood, and they didn’t have many relatives there.

“I grew up thinking I had a small family, but found I had a bigger one here,” he said.

His brother, Lenox, also reacted to the event.

“First and foremost, just being there was overwhelming,” he

began. “I felt a peaceful feeling.

There’s something that comes over you. I’m happy they are not forgotten. Jeff and Ellen were heaven sent.”

He continued.

“To see the support and seeing the gravestones in person, it was even a little emotional and I had to pull myself together to do the ceremony. I am blessed and happy to know I can care for the ancestors, and I’m looking forward to it. To walk the soil, feel the surroundings, see the gravesites and murals and artwork, there was no way to prepare for all that.”

“It will help lots of other families who have ancestors there too,” he observed.

Their wish is to make it a historical site and will try to get assistance to keep it up. “We’d like to make it a big thing,” he concluded.

He added that he will try to reach out to other families and will also be coming out to visit frequently.

Pastor Dr. Diane Newman-Frye, who is also Middletown’s councilmember-at-large, added her observations.

“It’s so heart-touching to see this happen, to know a lot of work has gone into this and that to give up something you love is not easy. The good part is that it is given back to the family so their roots can be discovered,” she said. “They are just now taking it over and will need a lot of help.”

Reverend Raymond H Morton Jr., pastor of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Middletown shared his thoughts as well.

“As I was driving here from Winchester, I thought about what scripture would best apply,” he began. “The words from Ecclesiastes, Chapter 3, first verse (in the King James Version of the bible), says, “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.

“Look around, this is the way it’s supposed to be,” he said.

Reverend Bertrand was standing near him, and he observed, “This is God’s Church.”

When Bertrand was asked how he felt about the event, he said, “I’m

ecstatic. I was only a pastor for nine years, but for every congregation I served, I asked them to see people as people, and not just their skin color or race.”

Lisa Johnson, who came to the event with her parents Constance and James, discovered her connection to the cemetery and other relatives through genealogy research, and reached out to them.

“When I first visited the cemetery, I had an emotional reaction,” she said, then added, “I’m proud to be here.”

the last few years have volunteered time, materials and energy to help with the restoration.

They were all willing to express their thoughts as well.

One notable expert in the field of keeping the history of slavery in the forefront of present-day people’s consciousness, is Jonathan Noyalas, director of the McCormick Civil War Institute and history professor at Shenandoah University.

He and his wife Brandy and son Alex attended the ceremony and he was willing and open about his eagerness to be part of the ongoing process of the cemetery’s progress.

He was contacted by Jeff and Ellen when they were interested in registering it as a historical landmark.

Noyalas, along with a contingent of students, faculty and staff from SU and students from Winchester Public Schools went to the cemetery and did an inventory of burial sites from which he created a professional map with the total count of 198 graves.

The map was on display at the

ceremony.

He has written a book called “To Be Free Some Day’: Race, Slavery, and Emancipation in the Shenandoah Valley During the Civil War Era.” Ellen proudly said that he had given her the book and referenced her work in it, inscribing in part, “Especially for my friend Ellen, with respect…”

This is what he had to say about the part he has played documenting this cemetery.

“Cemeteries such as this one are enormously significant because they first and foremost provide tangible evidence to those who might have been taught to believe that slavery did not exist in the Shenandoah Valley that it indeed existed.

“I believe that the hidden nature of this cemetery and another I mapped with my students just east of Middletown (in the same condition) are metaphors for the African American experience in the Valley-it has been hidden and forgotten by the masses.

“Working on these projects has special meaning to me and my students--while the identities of the enslaved people buried in these cemeteries may never be known, we in some way are breathing life into their story and bringing a message, which is, ‘regardless of what you do in life, every life has value.’”

Those who volunteered in other ways, weighed in with their thoughts on how much they care for the restoration as well.

Robbie Molden, who is on the Frederick County Planning Commission, and has been asked to be on the Belle Grove Plantation’s Board of Directors said he brought his bobcat to the site and laid gravel and lined stone for the driveway.

“I knew Ellen from helping to care for the Middletown Mt. Zion Cemetery,” he said. “And I’m happy to be able to help restore this cemetery.”

Rocky Taylor and his wife Pammy came to witness the deed signing and Rocky shared that he wanted to be a part of this and had helped with landscaping here and

Kristin Iden said, “Last fall I saw the article (Late September 2020 issue of the Warren/Frederick County Report) and it moved me to contact Ellen and Jeff,” she said.

“I got the volunteers to help and did cleanup in June when William Baltimore came to the site. It is an overpowering feeling. It’s a sacred space. So many were buried with no names.”

Bob Lewallen, who owns a home next to the cemetery, and is an official of the neighboring homeowner’s association described how he discovered the neglected site initially.

“After I moved here and built my home, I was just walking around the property in the winter of 2011 and found the graveyard. I noticed the sunken graves and saw the obelisk and other stones,” he said.

He has also worked on the road leading up the hill where the graves are and has high praise for Jeff and Ellen.

“There’s a difference between committed and involved,” he said.

“There’s an old saying, ‘in a breakfast of bacon and eggs, the chicken was involved, but the pig was committed.’”

By Carol Ballard Warren/Frederick County Report “The pandemic has created isolation and made people pull back from each other,” said Executive Director of the Warren Coalition, Christa Shifflett, in a recent conversation. “Isolation has been really bad for a lot of people. We (humans) are social beings who need one another to be healthy.”

So, in an attempt to solve that problem, the Warren Coalition is

working on the launch of a campaign called “We See You Warren County” (#WeCUWC).

“This is for the whole community, all 40,000 of them,” she said, with a smile in her voice.

“We’re doing this program because one of the main goals of the Coalition, particularly with children, is to build resilience. This prevents substance misuse, disease and mental health disorders.

For people to be their best selves, they need a sense of safety and be-

longing,” she said, and added, “We want to create that and the belief that ‘You matter, belong and are important.”

Another component to this campaign is to ask that when people are out exercising or when walking their dog, that they greet each other with a suggested saying for the month.

“Building community begins with individuals connecting to each other. At a very basic level, this happens when people witness, or acknowledge, each other, simply with good eye contact and a smile. Yet even in years without a pandemic, many people do not have that sense of connectedness with others. They feel isolated, forgotten. The past 18 months have been even more challenging, as evidenced by the rise in mental health issues, alcohol consumption, and drug misuse and overdoses.

“That’s why the Warren Coalition is inviting the entire community of Warren County—businesses, schools, organizations, clubs, families, and individuals— to engage in a witnessing campaign called ‘We See You, Warren County.’ Participants will commit to greeting others with a smile and a standard monthly greeting—for

example, the first month will be simply, “Hello, I hope you have a wonderful day.” This greeting is to be used for everyone, both those you know personally and those you don’t.”

In the beginning of the campaign the greetings will be something that people are already comfortable saying, like “How are you?”

“We will also be giving out stickers that people can keep, wear, and/or give out, as some people might be uncomfortable saying something like, ‘You matter,’ and will print them by the tens of thousands,” she said enthusiastically.

Christa said that she has been talking to folks about the campaign for about a month, and the response has been overwhelming.

She explained that Covid has also shown people that there’s a need to be social-that we are people and need to be valued. Some have also become afraid to be around others because of Covid.

Also in the works is the creation of a podcast, which will be available around mid-September, called “My Story Weaves Our Story.” It will consist of a group format that will highlight the diversity of different populations within the county. This podcast will be about exploring how important all of the

citizens are to the overall success of Warren County and what life is like for a wide variety of citizens.

By building understanding, we will further build a sense of belonging and community.

Parents have a difficult job in the best of times, and on one of the posters in front of the Warren Coalition booth at National Night Out with the words, “Have you ever felt like a bad parent?”

To address the underlying feeling that many parents have when raising their children, there is another goal.

“We want to let parents know how they can help their kids to become resilient, to build selfesteem from within and have healthy boundaries,” she said.

By Carol Ballard Warren/Frederick County Report At the downtown boutique called White Picket Fence friendly and open co-owners Sue and Chris Laurence spent time talking about the history and essence of their shop on 405 East Main in a recent interview.

“We’ve been here since 2005, and in August 2019, we opened our real estate business, Key Move Properties next door,” Sue began. “Chris retired a few years

ago and we wanted to do something in the adjacent space.”

So they opened the White Picket Fence at the same time.

The couple welcomes all family members and they enjoy it when kids come in with their parents.

They stock interesting and sometimes quirky articles for nearly every age.

One small child has been quoted as saying that she likes the shop because she can find things she likes that are especially for children.

“If kids come in and are ‘antsy,’ I have taken them on a treasure hunt which ended with giving the child a chance to choose a Ty bear to take home,” said Sue. “I usually let kids get something.”

And for men who aren’t necessarily into the shopping experience, there is a brightly painted comfortable green bench in front of the shop where they can sit.

“We put the bench out front, where the men can relax because they don’t always like to come into the shop,” Chris explained with a grin.

The bench also serves as a great place for anyone who wants to just sit, enjoy the view of the Gazebo and surrounding green space, people watch, and be still.

The conversation evolved into recollections of their positive memories of the period when Main Street was closed to traffic downtown last year on the weekends and then what has changed since it opened up again.

The couple took turns talking about the feeling of community spirit they had and how interactions with many other downtown business owners affected them when inside seating in restaurants was banned due to Covid-19 restrictions.

During that time, the closed street allowed people to sit outside without danger from traffic, as well as to feel free to walk around and visit other shops.

“More folks came downtown,” they said.

“We all supported each other’s businesses and got together once a month to do things together,” Sue said. “For example, we had a fairground and circus theme to go with “The Greatest Show on Earth” when the movie was being shown at Royal Cinemas.”

During the shutdown, theater owner Rick Novak brought the “Main Street Movie” series that he showed outdoors in front of the theater at multiple times throughout the day and evening.

At the time, many folks commented on how much they enjoyed bringing lawn chairs and blankets for kids to watch the movies on the outdoor screen.

People said it reminded them of being at a drive-in theater.

But this year, the street has been opened up again.

“So we lost the free spirit,” Chris

said.

“Yes, we kind of lost that,” Sue agreed.

“It was helpful for us as a small business, and even if we weren’t open, and lost business, we could set up tables outside. Although sometimes we didn’t even have merchandise displayed, and just put out games for people to play to give them a fun thing to do,” Sue said.

ends, they said, “to keep the doors open,” but there aren’t as many people walking around.

To keep it interesting and exciting for visitors, they and others worked together last year to add life to their immediate area.

“We bought some little flags and Chris and I and C&Cs Nina Huck, got out here and hung them across the street to make it festive,” Sue said.

vest event (2020), we sent an email to the town to see if we could decorate the Gazebo area, and Will Huck put the word out that we needed hay, pumpkins and flowers.

“The minute we put out decorations and the LOVE sign, people stopped to take pictures,” Sue noted. “We also did Easter decorations and set up cut-out boards at the Gazebo, then celebrated Mardi Gras.

They continued activities all summer as well.

“We had a picnic for business owners – brought food and we all had a good time, and even though we’ve been here 16 years, we’ve never been as involved as the last few,” she said.

“We have loved having a window on what’s going on,” Chris added. “A lot of small towns went through a downturn phase, and it’s been a trend in recent years to

go back to a downtown feeling.”

Their hope is that the new gallery that the owners of Kiln Doctor Art and Clay have opened, a new games place, another art gallery, and a wine store will all add to the attractiveness of the downtown and will bring more folks to Main Street.

When the interview turned back to the history of the shop and what people can find when they shop there, they said that before they opened the White Picket Fence, they had already been involved with a repurposed home goods/furniture business and originally thought of keeping on with that but decided to fill the new place with “fun stuff.”

Chris continued the conversation by describing the shop.

“It’s eclectic, which is a bit of a mouthful,” he said. “But we have various things like “PEEPERS,” reading glasses with built in blue light filters to reduce eye strain, See BUSINESS, 14

On 29 March 2021, the Colonel James Wood II Chapter of the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution sponsored a salute to Vietnam Veterans at the Commonwealth Senior Living Facility in Front Royal. Compatriots from the chapter were there to provide a commemoration for National Vietnam Veterans Day. Larry Johnson provided prayers and Marty Keesecker led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

This event honors all veterans from that era as explained by Dale Corey who further provided background information about the day. He explained how the United States became involved in

Indochina. From 1955 to 1975, 9 million Americans served in the armed forces with 2.7 million, including 11,000 women serving in Vietnam. Compatriots related stories of their Vietnam experience and of friends who became one of the 58,000 plus Americans who did not come back from that war. Dale Corey, Thomas “Chip” Daniel and Dennis Parmerter represented the Colonel James Wood II Chapter. Bill Schwetke, Past President of the Virginia SAR represented the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter and Marty Keesecker, President of the General Adam Stephens Chapter participated from West Virginia.

ENGLE’S ANGLE: “Included? Of Course Not!”

by Kevin S. Engle My wife can’t see the TV. She can see it, just not what’s on it.

If we’re watching a movie with subtitles, I have to read them to her.

She keeps saying we need a bigger TV. She’s been saying that for more than a year.

She’s right.

We could use a larger one.

I’ve just been too lazy to figure out which one. I’d have to spend time reading about the differences between OLED and QLED, 4K and 8K, and on and on.

In the meantime, I suggested she get a bigger pair of glasses.

She didn’t like my suggestion.

I finally got motivated the other

day and ordered the dang thing.

It came today.

Delivery was supposed to happen between 9AM and 1PM. After breakfast, I climbed behind our current television and stared at all the wires and cords going this way and that. I took a few pictures, just in case I couldn’t remember what went where.

I then unhooked and unplugged everything and moved the TV to another room.

I was ready.

The delivery truck came shortly before noon.

We ate lunch and then watched the short video telling us how to open the box and carefully remove the TV without breaking the glass.

So far so good.

“Where’s the stand?” my wife asked.

“In the box,” I told her.

I assumed it was in the box.

She shook her head. “I don’t think so.”

I started to sweat.

She was right.

There was a little box with the wall mount in it, but no stand.

This wasn’t really happening was it?

We looked online at our invoice, clicked on the TV’s specs and scrolled and scrolled down to the very last page of information.

The information I hadn’t looked at until now.

My face got hot.

“I don’t believe it!”

We both knew we wouldn’t be watching our new TV tonight.

God dangit!!!

After I stewed for a few minutes, ok, more than a few minutes, we carefully put the TV back into the box and moved it out of the way.

While she researched stands, I moved the old TV back to where it was this morning.

To my surprise and utter amazement, I actually remembered how to connect everything. Correctly.

I didn’t even need the pictures I’d taken just a few hours before.

And when I pressed the power button?

It came on just like it’s supposed to.

Of course the TV stands weren’t in stock.

We ordered one.

On Monday, when it gets here, we’ll do this again.

I can’t wait.

– Chris Hi Chris -- There is new stuff happening all the time. Today I have a big word for you – Phytoremediation -- an environmental approach in which trees and other plants are used to control leachate and treat polluted water and soil. This process hinges on matching the capability of different tree species with the types of contaminants present in soil and water. Identifying the worst contaminants within the dynamic conditions of a landfill has been challenging.

Recently a research team from the USDA Forest Service and the University of Missouri has developed a new contaminant prioritization tool that has the potential to increase the effectiveness of en-

vironmental approaches to landfill clean-up.

“Thousands of contaminants can be present in landfill leachate, and contamination can vary by location and over time, so it can be difficult to determine what needs to be, or even can be, targeted with environmental remediation,” said Elizabeth Rogers, a USDA Forest Service Pathways intern and the lead author of the study.

“This tool allows site managers to prioritize the most hazardous contaminants or customize the tool to address local concerns.”

Knowing which contaminants are the most hazardous allows scientists to better match trees and tree placement in landfills.

Phytoremediation research has focused on discovering which trees work best in particular soils and sites, and the ability to home in on specific contaminants will enhance phytoremediation outcomes.

The pollutant prioritization tool also allows for greater transparency on the benefits of phytoremediation. When you know what you are targeting, you can provide better information to your community on how long remediation will take and how effective it will be.

Harness Racing Fans To Get Added Bonus at 2021 Shenandoah County Fair Fans that attend harness racing at the Shenandoah County Fair this year will have something extra special in store besides four days of pacing and trotting action from September 1-4.

Six attendees over the four days will win a unique chance to “Own a Horse for a Day”. The lucky winners will return on Saturday September 18 --- opening weekend of the Shenandoah Downs parimutuel meet --- and actually own a horse in a $4,000 race.

Those six, joined by two winners from a local radio station contest, will each draw one of eight horses in the “Own a Horse” race field. Each winner will get to spend time in the paddock with their horse, trainer and driver before the race, enjoy lunch on the VIP trackside viewing deck, and

Healthy soup offers many different benefits

Food is a critical component of healthy living, helping people to reduce their risk for illnesses and even helping them to overcome colds and other ailments. The properties of soup, for example, can chase away chills and offer other benefits. Soup is hydrating, and the ingredients included in the recipe may be able to do everything from tame coughs to reduce mucus to boost the immune system.

This recipe for “Navy Bean and Collard Greens Soup” courtesy of John La Puma, M.D., ChefMD, includes collard greens. When one chops or chews collard greens, he or she gets the powerful, helpful chemicals isothiocyanates and indole-3-carbinol. They can help the liver produce enzymes that detoxify cancer-causing toxins in the body.

In addition, the soup includes tofu, which will adopt the flavor of other ingredients and add a form of lean protein along with the beans.

Navy Bean and Collard Greens Soup Serves 4 3 cups vegetable broth, such as Pacific Organic brand 4 cups coarsely chopped stemmed collard greens,

preferably organic (1 bunch 10 to 12 ounces) 11⁄2 cup packaged julienned (matchstick) carrots 11⁄2 teaspoons chili garlic puree or chili paste with garlic 1 (12 ounce) package extra firm tofu, cubed in bite size pieces 1 (16 ounce) can unsalted navy beans, drained 1⁄4 cup grated Romano cheese Combine broth, collard greens, carrots, and chili garlic puree in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat.

Reduce heat; cover and simmer 10 to 12 minutes or until greens are nearly tender. Stir in tofu and beans; cover and simmer 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Ladle into shallow bowls; top with cheese.

Tips: Great northern or cannellini beans may replace the navy beans and Swiss chard may replace the collard greens if desired. Also, look for chili garlic puree or chili paste with garlic in the ethnic section of the supermarket.

Because the beans are unsalted, there is no need to rinse them before adding to the soup.

Fatal Crash in Warren County Virginia State Police Trooper T. Moade is investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash in Warren County. The crash occurred Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at 6:45 p.m. along the 200 block of Whitney Lane.

A 2007 Polaris Ranger sideby-side was traveling on private property when it was unable to maneuver the terrain and overturned.

The driver of the Polaris, Jerrell S. Leadman Jr, 61, of Bentonville, VA, suffered minor injuries in the crash and was treated on scene.

Leadman was not wearing a seatbelt.

A passenger in the Polaris, a 7-year-old female, was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene of the crash as a result of her injuries. The female was not wearing a seatbelt.

Another passenger in the Polaris, a 4-year-old male, was transported to Winchester Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. The male was not wearing a seatbelt.

Leadman was taken into custody and charged with one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence and two felony counts of child endangerment.

Leadman was transported to the RSW Regional Jail where he is being held without bond.

On 27 March 2021, the Colonel James Wood II Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution conducted a color guard workshop in Strasburg, Virginia. At this workshop, members of the chapter were given presentations on safety in handling and firing black powder flintlock muskets. They were drilled in presenting the national colors at events and the conduct of a musket squad in firing a musket salute.

Brett Osborn gave presentations on

safety and commands. Dale Corey gave presentations on conduct of ceremonies. Attending the workshop were Marc Robinson, Chip Daniel, Sean Carrigan, Mike Dennis, Erick Moore, Dennis Parmerter, Nathan Poe, Barry Schwoerer and future member Mike St Jacques. The group was preparing for ceremonies to honor Vietnam Veterans and an upcoming Revolutionary War Grave Marking Ceremony to be held in Stephens City.

On Tuesday, August 17th, 2021, the Front Royal Police Department responded to the Budget Inn, located at 1122 North Royal Avenue, regarding two individuals trespassing. Officers contacted both subjects, identified as Raymond Lewis II of Front Royal and Angelia Hinkle of New Market. Both were detained after drug paraphernalia and suspected narcotics were observed in the motel room. A subsequent search revealed 4.9 ounces of Methamphetamine with a street value of $5000, 2.2 Grams of Heroin, and 12 prescription pills with similar characteristics as Suboxone.

Raymond Lewis II and Angelia Michelle Hinkle were arrested and transported to the Rappahannock Shenandoah Warren Regional Jail where both were charged with Virginia Code § 18.2-248 Possession w/ intent to sell, etc. Schedule I or II drugs. Raymond Lewis was held without bond and Angelia Hinkle was ordered to be held on a $5,000 secured bond. Court date for these offenses is set for September 14th, 2021, in Warren County General District Court. Front Royal officers were assisted by members of the Northwest Regional Drug Task Force (NWRDTF).
