Estimates from the organizers ranged from 2,200 to 4,000 throughout the entire day, beginning at noon with volunteers carrying on the Louisiana tradition of public pumpkin carving, begun here by William (Willie) Huck, owner of C & Cs Frozen Treats, until well after 9:00 p.m. that evening when the last few stragglers were still afoot.

Just in time for Christmas, the legendary Alpine Krampuses made their appearance coming creepily through the trees at the Hometown Halloween event at the Gazebo on October 31. Alpine folklore has it that Krampus during the Christmas season scares children who have misbehaved.

Jellyfish Penelope Dublin was rewarded for her creative efforts in the costume judging contest on Halloween at Main and Chester Streets at the Gazebo. “She spent a lot of time on it,” said her Mom.

Craig Laird, of Royal Oak Computers was one of the organizers of the event, as he has been for many years, recruiting vendors and “around 30” businesses to participate.

“We had a good crowd all day long,” he said. “We were really happy to do it this year.” He added that last year, during the Covid-19 high threat, many Main Street business owners didn’t want to risk handing out candy personally.

Portions of Main Street and Chester Street were closed for the festivities and the costume parade and judging around and at the Gazebo started at 4:00 p.m.

Entire families were dressed in the same themed costumes, and all appeared to be having a great

time.

From 6-9:00 p.m. on Main Street, the kids walked up and down Main Street saying “Trickor-Treat” to Main Street business owners.

“I was pleased to notice that this year the children were so polite, saying, ‘Thank you,’” Laird said. “We had no problems, it was a wonderful event, with the politeness and friendliness of the community really making the day.”

When contacted, Huck had more to add to the day and to talk about future community events.

“I’m the ‘Hype Man,’” he said. “I get energy by spreading the love that I have for the community.”

As Congress debates following states in legalizing marijuana, youth use is up

WASHINGTON - As congressional Democrats press for federal legalization of marijuana and more states continue to legalize it, an increasing number of college-age adults across the United States are ditching liquor stores and heading to dispensaries, a new study shows.

Roughly 44% of college students consumed marijuana in 2020, a jump from 38% in 2015, according to a July survey by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research and sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health.

The survey, which has been tracking alcohol and drug consumption of Americans aged 1960 since 1980, questioned nearly 1,600 young adults aged 19-22 from March to November of 2020.

This age range showed the greatest

changes in cannabis and alcohol use of all the groups studied.

By contrast, among 45-60 year olds, 10-12% reported marijuana use in 2020, a decrease from 1215% in 2015.

“There may be multiple reasons for these findings, including increased social acceptance of marijuana use and decreased criminal justice-related treatment admissions,” Nora Volkow, director of NIDA, told Capital News Service.

“Additional research is required to build an evidence base and untangle the multiple factors that affect cannabis use outcomes.”

The increase in marijuana use among young Americans coincided with a decrease in alcohol consumption. Fifty-six percent of the study’s subjects reported drinking alcohol in 2020, compared to 62% the year before.

Likewise, binge-drinking hit an all-time low in the most recent study, dipping eight points in a year to 24%.

“While binge-drinking has been gradually declining among college students for the past few decades, this is a new historic low,” Dr. John Schulenberg, a University of Michigan psychology professor and one of the study’s authors, said in a statement.

The trend toward higher marijuana consumption comes at a time when the legalization of the drug is accelerating among the states: voters in Arizona, Montana, South Dakota and New Jersey approved marijuana legalization measures in the 2020 elections.

In total, 33 states - including Maryland - plus the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, have legalized marijuana for medicinal use.

A total of 19 states and the District of Columbia also have legalized marijuana for recreational use.

“Cannabis prohibition, a key pillar of the failed War on Drugs, has caused substantial harm to our communities and small businesses, and especially for communities of color,” Wyden said in a statement. “It’s as simple as this: Senators Booker, Schumer and I want to bring common sense to the federal government, end prohibition and restore the lives of those hurt most and set them up for opportunity.”

The lawmakers’ bill, called the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act, would remove cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act and would give states the right to regulate the drug as they now regulate alcohol.

eral list of controlled substances,” Schumer said in a statement. “But it will also help fix our criminal justice system, ensure restorative justice, protect public health, and implement responsible taxes and regulations.”

The House in December passed legislation decriminalizing marijuana, but the measure died in the Senate. Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-New York, and five other House Democrats reintroduced the bill in May. Nadler is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

Pointing to state legalization efforts, Nadler said: “Our federal laws must keep up with this pace.”

But opponents insist cannabis use shouldn’t be encouraged by the government.

“Drug use is an epidemic in this country,” Scott Chipman, vice president of Americans Against Legalizing Marijuana, told CNS. “We need to ask why and address the underlying causes. Certainly, normalizing drug use and commercializing marijuana exacerbates the drug use epidemic.”

The University of Michigan survey found that cannabis use was highest in states in the West and Northeast. Fourteen of the 20 states in those two regions have legalized the drug for recreational use.

“Often, as humans, we want to do things that we perceive to be normative – to have our actions perceived as positive and normal within our social groups and society,” Volkow said. “So, as drugs like marijuana… are advertised to have potential therapeutic effects and are perceived as socially acceptable, that may lead people to be more likely to want to take them.”

The nation’s attitude towards marijuana the drug has become more favorable in recent years.

A November 2020 Gallup poll showed that 68% of Americans support marijuana legalization, including almost half of Republicans.

“For decades, our federal government has waged a War on Drugs that has unfairly impacted low-income communities and communities of color,” Booker said in a statement. “While red and blue states across the country continue to legalize marijuana, the federal government continues to lag woefully behind. It is time for Congress to end the federal marijuana prohibition and reinvest in communities most impacted by the failed War on Drugs.”

Zander Ward remembered at Front Royal candlelight vigil

Sadness was reflected on the faces of the folks gathered around the Gazebo before the Candlelight Vigil for Zander Ward began.

The outsized LOVE sign, prominent near the Gazebo, served as the underlying theme of the evening’s Candlelight Vigil honoring and remembering 18-year-old hometown man Zander Ward. He had been reported missing since Monday, October 25th, and was found deceased in a wooded area off the roadway on Guard Hill Road on October 28.

On November 2, a Candlelight Vigil was held for him to give others a place to come and grieve with his family.

The event was held at the Gazebo on Chester and Main Streets in downtown Front Royal, the place where a few days earlier, a huge crowd of celebrating people had gathered for the much more joyful Halloween event.

Candles were provided for those who wanted them.

There was a table with literature about suicide prevention with water and tissues.

There was music at the Vigil, and it began with a recording playing the haunting song “Hallelujah,” by Leonard Cohen and sparking tears in the

eyes of some who were gathered there.

Speakers were invited to share their thoughts after William (Willie) Huck and Zander’s uncle, Bill Long, started the event by sharing their thoughts.

Huck said he had met Zander when he worked at the ice cream shop Huck owns.

“He helped me every day, snapping his fingers and whistling,” he said. “He’s singing to us right now. We have to face

facts for what they are-we’ve lost too many children in the last few years to things like this.”

Bill Long spoke next.

“We’re here to remember Zander. His life touches everyone. The light and peacefulness he brought helps drive us into the future.”

Zander’s father said, “I want his death to maybe help someone else. I was already proud of him, but all this community support and comments and compliments show how people felt about him, remembering that his life was short, but he grew into a fine young man.”

Several others spoke then, some sharing their personal experiences with addiction and others about losing children to suicide.

“It’s not the time to say, ‘I wish I had done something else.’ Don’t blame yourself. No one else does,” offered another supportive person present.

Then those gathered there were asked how many had thought to take their own lives to raise their candles, and many did.

The people were then advised to remember that they are not alone.

Zander Benjamin Ward (2003 – 2021) Zander Benjamin Ward, 18, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 25, 2021, in Front Royal.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 5 at 2:30 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home with Dr. R. Mark Jordan officiating. Interment will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Zander was born April 18, 2003, in Winchester, Virginia, son of Dennis C. Ward, Jr. and Sara E. Long Ward of Front Royal. He was a 2021 graduate of Warren County High School worked for C&C Frozen Treats in Front Royal, and most recently was working for Papa John’s in Front Royal. He will be long remembered for his kind heart and beautiful smile. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and many friends.

Surviving with his parents are maternal grandparents, William and Betty Long of Front Royal; paternal grandparents, Jim and Carol Mitchell of Stephens City and Dennis and Jean Ward of Delaware; four brothers, Sky Long, Tristan Ward, Aidan Ward, and Sebastian Ward all of Front Royal; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Pallbearers will be Dennis C. Ward, Jr., Sky Long, Tristan Ward, Aidan Ward, Sebastian Ward, and Evan Martin. Honorary pallbearers will be Thomas Silvius, Adrian Salmons, and Arden Doyle.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 4 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

C&O Historical Society releases three fundraising calendars for 2022

The cover of 2022’s newly-released calendar, “Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Through the New River Gorge,” features C&O Railway H-8 class “Allegheny”-type locomotive No. 1612, arguably the most powerful class steam locomotive ever built, laboring with a heavy train past the Kaymoor boarding house. Mining at Kaymoor began before the construction of the South Side Subdivision in 1900. Coal was transferred across the river via aerial tramway to the C&O Railway’s main line. Clifton Forge, Va. – The Chesapeake & Ohio Historical Society, the group dedicated to preserving the history of the C&O Railway, has just published its yearly fundraising calendars for sale in support of the 52-year-old non-profit organization. These printed calendars include the famous Chessie “The Railroad Kitten” calendar, the longest-running railroad-themed calendar in the United States. This 88th edition of the Chessie calendar features a selection of vintage C&O Railway advertising art from the 1930s-1940s.

The art selected for 2022’s Chessie calendar represents the “golden” era of Chessie. In the decade before and during World War II, the advertising mascot was new and wildly popular with the traveling public, who saw the famous kitten and her family used in the railroad’s nationwide marketing campaigns. Beginning in 1933 she burst on the scene with unexpected vigor, surprising even the C&O Railway, which promptly hired a high-class advertising agency to promote

her. The Wall Street Journal once called Chessie “the kitten of destiny.”

The Chessie calendar reached its peak distribution with 425,000 copies in 1947. The selections made for 2022 by the C&O Historical Society represent the best of Chessie, the

Rounding out the fundraising calendars offered for 2022, the C&O Historical Society has, for the first time, published a special calendar dedicated to a specific region along the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway—what is now the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.

Explaining why the C&OHS has created a calendar dedicated primarily to a geographic region, as opposed to a purely railroad-specific topic, the organization’s president, Mark Totten, explains, “There are instances where factors combine to create a completely unconventional set of historical circumstances on which we look back with wonder because of their uniqueness. For 2022, the C&O Historical Society’s illustrious steam calendar provides a year-long gallery of iconic 4-6-4 “Hudson”-type steam locomotives. One of the most recognizable examples of C&O Railway steam power, the Hudsons could be seen throughout the Chesapeake & Ohio system. A mandatory feature for both studying and modeling the C&O, the 4-6-4 locomotives helped define an era along Chessie’s Road.

With a theme of “PUR-R-R-fect Transportation!” for 2022, the 88th edition of the Chessie “The Railroad Kitten” calendar features vintage Chesapeake & Ohio advertisements that were used in the 1930s-1940s. In many ways this was the “golden” era of Chessie when the advertising mascot was new and wildly popular with the traveling public. The famous Chessie calendar is the longest-running railroad-themed calendar in the United States.

Ms. Dorothy Jean Boley of Hinton, West Virginia is believed to be the last living female wartime hire on the C&O Railway with memories that include seeing German prisoners of war captured from the Afrika Korps, traveling west through the Gorge aboard C&O trains to stateside camps, as she hand delivered paychecks to C&O road crews who were too busy in wartime to leave their trains.

In her railroad career she was secretary to the division superintendent and, in her later life, dedicated her retirement to the Hinton Railroad Museum, serving as a living link to the history that organization preserves in this place.

Mr. Marvin Plumley of Meadow Bridge, West Virginia was hired onto the C&O Railway in 1967, beginning

a decades-long career working various railroading jobs, including years at Thurmond, Meadow Creek, Hinton (HX), Raleigh, Gauley, Rainelle, and the White Sulphur Springs depot. From 1984 to 2007, Mr. Plumley worked for Amtrak as the station agent for Prince, West Virginia, serving the public throughout the New River Gorge. Today Mr. Plumley is an active C&O Historical Society member and volunteer, working to preserve and teach the history he witnessed, and

promoting the Society’s mission, especially by contributing to projects at the C&O Railway Heritage Center in Clifton Forge, Virginia.

These individuals represent just two of many thousands who lived and worked within this region of West Virginia for over 100 years. C&OHS President Mark Totten concludes, “Today the New River Gorge itself is silently returning to the wild, forever preserved as America’s newest national park, an example that nature is a stronger force than any technology that

attempts to conquer it. But for a time, humankind conquered the wilderness, changing history and contributing to the world’s progress throughout the 20th century. This calendar captures pieces from that unique intersection of history, when an industrial symphony echoed against the gorge, and people and machines briefly ruled the landscape.”

George Bush went from President to painter after leaving the White House. His artwork is impressive. The only thing I’ve painted is my garage and it wasn’t very impressive. It was a lot of work.

One of my brothers-in-law repurposes wooden pallets. He cuts out different shapes of fish that he and guests then paint for fun.

And when the leaves start to fall, my wife picks up balls of yarn and crochets pumpkins and win-

Do you know what I do when we’re watching television?

I watch television.

And stuff my face.

But I’ve also learned some valuable skills the last few years. And even one just this week.

When those sunny fall days start turning cooler, the stink bugs make their move from outside to inside, as in our house.

Five or so years ago, we had so many they drove us crazy. Now it’s only a few a day or none at all.

But when they appear, I’m ready.

I’ve perfected my technique.

Armed with a small plastic butter container and lid, minus the butter, I scoop them into the container and toss it into the freezer.

Bye bye stink bug.

We used to suck them up in a vacuum cleaner but the nasty

smell would linger.

Now, not so much.

They’re still as annoying as ever, but because of my advanced skills, I quickly get rid of the beasts.

And just this week, I’ve branched out from stink bugs to flies.

And just as I say that, one flew right in front of me here at my desk.

I’ll deal with him shortly.

My ultimate goal is to catch them with chopsticks just as Mr. Miyagi tried to in The Karate Kid. “Man who catch fly with chopstick accomplish anything.”

Until then, I’ll do it another way.

Again, the vacuum cleaner would work, but that’s no fun.

I want a challenge.

Remembering something I’d seen before, I first unlock the front door and then round up the necessary tools.

A piece of cardboard and a plas-

tic container that used to be full of 32 ounces of smooth style strawberry yogurt.

The flies like to hang out on the windows and that’s where I go.

I cover Mr. Fly with the yogurt container and then carefully tilt one side juuuuuuuuuust enough to slide the cardboard over the opening.

And just like that, Mr. Fly is now trapped inside my yogurt container.

While holding the cardboard firmly in place, I carefully and quickly make my way to the door, open it and remove the cardboard.

I watch as he flies off to freedom.

And hopefully not back into my house.

Catch and release.

I’m not sure what I’ll conquer next.

Republicans sweep Virginia The November 2, 2021, Virginia elections resulted in a sweeping upset, with Republicans capturing all three statewide offices and the House of Delegates majority.

Virginia’s “off-off year” statewide and legislative elections feature the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and 100 seats in the House of Delegates on the ballot. Turnout is usually relatively low, though the

2019 and 2017 elections saw turnout increase dramatically, leading to Democratic unified control of state government in 2019 for the first time in a generation.

This year, with Democratic President Biden in office after former Republican President Trump, in a political environment generally perceived as unfriendly to Democrats at both the national and state levels, the elections were highly competitive. 91 of 100 House seats were contested.

Final polls showed a tossup for the gubernatorial race between former Governor Terry McAuliffe (D) and political newcomer Glenn Youngkin (R), with Youngkin having clear momentum going into Election Day. Statewide and House elections broke fundraising

records and drew national attention.

Before the new Governor takes office, outgoing Democratic Governor Ralph Northam will submit his administration’s final full budget to the General Assembly for the next legislative session in January. The Senate of Virginia is still under narrow 21-19 seat Democratic control, with newly elected Republican Lt. Governor Sears wielding the tie-breaking vote next year.

The newly created Virginia Redistricting Commission so far has not been able to reach consensus on new legislative maps. As a result, the Supreme Court of Virginia will appoint two special masters (one from each party) to draw the maps for court approval. Depending on the approval timeline and potential litigation, Virginia may schedule another round of House elections next year based on the new maps.

Tree-killing invasive insects and diseases can lurk both inside and on the surface of firewood.

While these insects and diseases don’t normally travel far on their own, transporting firewood can allow potentially destructive and

non-native organisms to move hundreds of miles and start infestations in new places. In addition, carrying firewood from one area to another may also violate state and federal laws, depending on the region. Anyone traveling from one location to another should not carry firewood to their destination unless it is heat-treated and certified.

VDACS provides the following advice for buyers who suspect that they have not received the full amount of wood they paid for: • Keep the delivery ticket or sales invoice as proof of purchase.

• Pay by check so that you have a record of the purchase.

• Write down the license number of the delivery vehicle.

• Measure the wood before using any of it.

• If you determine the delivery to be short measure, first contact the seller to rectify the shortage.

• If the seller does not cooperate, contact the VDACS Office of Weights and Measures at (804) 786-2476. Do not use any of the firewood prior to the investigation

by VDACS. Consumers should use firewood in a safe and sensible manner. Only use seasoned wood, not green wood, as fuel in fireplaces and wood stoves. Seasoned or dry wood burns cleaner, creates less creosote buildup in chimneys than green wood, and produces up to 25 percent more heat than green wood.

Front Royal man killed in Giles County crash Virginia State Police Trooper J.T. Hackney is investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash in Giles County. The crash occurred Oct. 29, 2021 at 9:32 p.m. on Route 460 at Route 774.

A 2019 Nissan Versa was traveling west on Route 460 when it ran off the left side of the highway, struck a culvert and overturned several times. The vehicle came to rest on its roof.

The driver, Jeffery A. Gibson, 61, of Front Royal, Va., was transported to Lewis Gale Medical Center in Blacksburg, Va., where he succumbed to his injuries later that same night.

He was wearing a seatbelt. Fatigue is being investigated as a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Warren Coalition announces November saying for “We See You, Warren County” campaign The Warren Coalition’s community-building initiative campaign called “We See You, Warren County” enters its third month with 42 businesses and organi-

zations signed on, along with a number of individuals who have made the official commitment to engage in the campaign. Others have joined the Facebook group, which is closing in on 100 people.

By signing up, organizations agree to encourage their employees to acknowledge each other and their customers, as well as those they pass by, with the monthly saying. For November, the saying is “Good luck today!” The saying can be adapted as needed; for example, you might say it to someone you pass on the street, but if you are in a longer conversation with someone, it might be the way you close the conversation.

On 25 October 2021, the Colonel James Wood II Chapter, Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution participated in a Flag Retirement Ceremony conducted by the Ketoctin Chapter, Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution. The United States Flag Code states “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” The Flag Code does not actually give specifics on how to destroy the flag. However, one should use common sense making sure the procedure is in good taste and shows no disrespect for the flag.

During a burning ceremony, a flag that is worn, is presented and it is verified that it has served and is to be retired with respect and honorably. For some ceremonies, the flag is cut up to facilitate the burning.

When the blue field is removed, it remains in one piece to show unity of the country. The emcee for this event was Kecia Brown, Regent of the Ketoctin Chapter of the DAR. After calling the gathering to order, an invocation was presented and the Colonel James Wood II Chapter Color Guard presented the colors. Loudoun Veterans of Foreign Wars Post Commander led the Pledge of Allegiance and Joan Whitemer led the singing of God Bless America. The colors were then posted by the Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard. Flags were presented and then retired followed by the playing of Taps. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats and set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, sift the powdered sugar and unsweetened cocoa powder together, then whisk in the instant espresso powder (if using) and salt until well combined. Set aside.

In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the egg whites, egg, and vanilla extract until fully combined.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, and stir until the mixture is fully combined and smooth.

Using a 1-tablespoon cookie scoop, scoop the cookie dough onto the prepared baking sheets, making sure to leave a little room between each one.

Bake for 11 to 14 minutes, or until the tops of the cookies are set. Remove from the oven, and allow the cookies to cool completely on the baking sheets.

For professionals or people with a great deal of lived experience, it will provide a set of slides, tools and approaches that may be helpful with clients or family members or may provide an easy way to train community members to be part of the solution. Because the training is conversation-driven, professionals can often be particularly helpful to other participants during the training.

We are very fortunate that unlike some choral groups, we have a robust group and a good balance of singers, including several Bridgewater College students who come up each week to sing with us. (Our Artistic Director, Dr. Ryan Keebaugh, is the choral director at Bridgewater.) All choral groups lost members for a variety of factors, but we gained a bunch of new, very talented singers so we feel fortunate.
