President’s Welcome Greetings to all. We have another fun-filled summer at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds, with four weekends of horse racing and the 134th Gillespie County Fair, set for Aug. 25-28.
Dancing starts immediately after the races with Lindsey Lane, followed by Jack lngram, with David Lee Murphy closing out the night. Sunday, gates open at 11 a.m. with racing at 1 p.m. Exhibitions, midway, carnival and agricultural entertainment will be on hand all day.
We already have had a busy 2022 season starting back in April and May. The (AMCA) American Motorcycle Club of America had the National meet here with a vintage bike show, flat dirt track head-tohead racing, swap meet and a lot of camaraderie.
I am very honored to serve as president this year for such a great organization. Things would not be a success if it weren’t for our volunteers throughout the year, excellent staff to keep all of us directors in line and looking good, and all of our board of directors and their wives.

I was elected to the board in 1989 after participating in the Hillbilly Wedding for Gillespie County’s 100th Fair Celebration and served until 2013. Shortly after joining the board,
the Fair Association began the process of supporting live pari-mutuel racing. I had the privilege of working alongside members of the organization to build the foundation for live racing in Gillespie County, something I am truly proud to have been a part of. During my tenure, I served as Stall Superintendent, General Manager of Racing, and worked the starting gate during racing events. I also held other offices such as Secretary, Vice President, and President (’94-’95). Other areas of service include sitting on the Executive Board, Long Range Planning Committee, Country Peddler Committee, Easter Fires Chairman for the 125th Celebration, and the V+50 Committee in honor of WWII.
My most cherished service, however, was being a part of the LABC, and serving out my time on the board with this group of men. Being a member of the Fair Association afforded me the opportunity to meet some truly incredible and influential people over the years. However, none more important than the relationships that were built with fellow association members. Friends that have truly become family. I want to thank the community for their support of the Fair Association, without which the organization would not exist. Most of all, my heart goes out to my family; Vicki, Megan, Eugene, Chenoa and Alexis, who put in 25+ years alongside me, supporting me and the organization. They each did so then and they, along with their families, continue to do so today. Thank you for this honor and God Bless!
RUBEN SAGEBIEL, JR. The 134th Gillespie County Fair is dedicated in part to Ruben Sagebiel, Jr., and Honorary Lifetime Director who has served on the fair board for 28 years. Ruben joined the board in 1986 and was named Honorary Lifetime Director in 2013. He served as president in 2007. Ruben was on the Executive Board for 2½ years. During his time, he has served as Chair and/or Co-chair of the
Agriculture, Home Skills, Grounds, Sheep and Concessions committees. Ruben participated in several improvement projects to the grounds, such as an addition to the
show barn, permanent food court, pavilion barn, and improvements to the exhibition hall. “The people I have served with have become lifelong friends and I have enjoyed meeting new people. I enjoyed my time and don’t know how I had the time!” His two children, Kristi and Travis, helped run race pictures and picked up tickets. Away from the fair duties he stays busy overseeing cattle and doing carpentry. He makes the best BBQ for family reunions. The Directors of the 134th Gillespie County Fair are honored to recognize Ruben Sagebiel, Jr. for his hard work, dedication, and support to the Gillespie County Fair Grounds.

“She would go take the pictures with young girls because she wanted that image of them looking up to her as a role model,” Wanda said.
Battling Cancer School, Camry wanted to make sure she got it. “Libby has Down syndrome,” said her mother, Wanda Franz. “Camry went out and campaigned all week for Libby, and she won.” Wanda remembers how excited Camry was when Libby was announced as queen. “I think she was more excited than she would’ve been if she had won it herself,” Wanda said.
Fair Queen Her caring spirit also came out when she became fair queen, a role she had won in 2013. Her family said the decision to run for the court might have come from a little peer pressure since her friend, Mackenzie Spisak Collapy, also ran, but the role suited Camry. “She was the girly-girl of the girls,” Wanda said. “She loved glamour and makeup. She was definitely not the tomboy girl.” During her time as queen, her main goal was to be a role model for younger girls. “She always wanted young girls to look up to her as someone that they would want to be,” Wanda said. She enjoyed all the events, but most of all, she wanted to meet with the little girls after the parade or during the fair.
Camry moved back to Fredericksburg from San Angelo in June of 2020 for a kindergarten job in Comfort. Her fiancé, Christopher Skokan, moved to Fredericksburg after she was diagnosed. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do but did know he wanted to be with the woman he had shared life with since 2015. “They enjoyed each other in whatever they did,” Wanda said. “Two weeks into being home, Camry began having stomach aches and ended up in the emergency room in July.” “We later found out there was a tumor in her uterus,” her sister, Jetta Eckhardt, recalled. “She was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma. By the time they found it, it had taken up 90% of her bone marrow.” Through her 21 months of treatment, she kept that smile and strong spirit. “She was in a lot of pain, but she didn’t want anyone to know,” Len said. “She lost her hair to chemo and said, ‘I always wanted to shave my head anyway.’” During her 21-month treatment, Wanda remembers the strong bond between Camry and Chris, who she employed at Hill Country Propane to help her not only with the business, but also with Camry’s health. “He was my righthand man,” Wanda said. “If I couldn’t stay the

day with her, he would. He was amazing at scheduling her medicine and would often wake up at 1 a.m. to give her medicine if she needed it. Whatever he had to do to take care of her, he would do it.” The cancer also didn’t change her giving heart. Wanda recalls a time where it came out during one of their final trips to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. She told her mother she wanted to go to IKEA because she had never been. Wanda thought it was an interesting request but granted it. On the way there, they encountered a homeless man on the side of the road. “She said, ‘Mom, there’s a ChickFil-A over there. I want Chick-Fil-A, and can we also get a meal for him?’” Wanda recalled. When they brought the meal back to the man, he saw she was bald and decided to bless her. “It kind of makes you wonder, was he really a homeless man or was he someone sent from above?” she said. While Camry did not survive the cancer, her family is confident she’s in a better place. “She would always say everything was going to be OK, and God was taking care of us,” Wanda said. “I think we took it as she was going to be healed. We prayed for a miracle for Camry’s healing, but we realize now the miracle was in front of us the entire time. The miracle was her.”

Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association officials said they appreciate the county for the use of Courthouse Square as a staging area and the City of Fredericksburg for providing personnel from the street and police departments to help direct traffic and pace the procession. A few rules must be observed by participants and parade watchers. • All vehicles in the parade must be able to navigate the entire parade route and make all turns and clearances without difficulty. It is the responsibility of each driver to see to it that their vehicle or float clears all obstacles and can maneuver turns. If the route includes a U-turn, parade entries must be able to maneuver and make a U-turn in one motion (no reversing). Participants must design their entry in length, width and height to meet this requirement. Floats and entries cannot exceed the 13 feet, 6 inch height limit from ground to top of float/entry.

• To reduce gaps, vehicles should maintain their speed to the pace of a slow walk and stay within two to three car lengths of the preceding entry. • Entries are not allowed to stop or impede the forward motion of the parade at any time with performances, dancing, stopping to rev engines, or any other action that alters parade movement. Performing groups should choreograph routines to always maintain forward motion. • No candy or other enticements will be thrown/handed from any entry to spectators. • No jumping on or off moving entries: Parade participants may
not jump, dance, ride, bike, roller skate, roller-blade, skate-board, or move in any way onto or off any moving float or vehicle. • Entries should never stop on the parade ending street/road at any time for unloading to allow for all entries to safely exit the parade route. • Water guns and spraying of water by any means is prohibited.
Parade watchers should bring their own water as the event can last a while. All parade information as subject to change. Updates will be announced in the Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post, on the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association website at gillespiefair.com and the fair association’s Facebook page.
• No alcohol may be consumed by float drivers or anyone operating an entry during the event. • No music, sirens, air-horns, firing of re-enactment weapons, or other noises that exceed 85 decibels without prior approval from the City of Fredericksburg.

For some of the 134th Gillespie County Fair Court, the role wasn’t something they had always dreamed of being. Kenna Tatsch, the current Gillespie County Fair Queen, said becoming a part of the court is not something she ever thought she could do, but she had known others who ran and had looked to them as role models.

“So, when the time came for it to maybe be me, I took it and it has been so much fun so far,” she said. “I am really enjoying meeting new people at the many events that we hold at the fair grounds. Also, bonding with the girls is so much fun, expanding my friendships and getting close with them, as well.”
Queen’s court provides opportunities for community involvement. By Samuel Sutton Standard-Radio Post editor
Tamez said. “Watching the girls at the parades and different events around town looked like such an amazing opportunity and it seemed like a group I wanted to be a part of.” Grandjean and Hartmann both felt they could use this role to have a bigger impact on their community.

“I did not expect to become fair queen,” she said. “As the girls and I work together, I appreciate even more what an honor it is to continue the tradition of the fair court and what it stands for.” Earning a spot on the court for Fair Duchess Ridley Strackbein became a focus three years ago, when a friend of hers ran. “The court skipped a year during my sophomore year because of COVID-19,” she said. “Then, that same friend called me up to tell me I only had one chance left to run now and I better do it for my junior year.”
“I wanted to be involved in my community and a role model for the little girls who look up to us,” Grandjean said. “It is a great honor and opportunity to be the young woman little girls wish to be.” She hoped to show young girls that being a part of this community is about more than just looking pretty and wearing a crown. “It is about integrity, responsibility and poise,” she said. “Being on this fair court has been a goal of mine ever since I have lived in Fredericksburg.”
Hartmann, a star basketball player for Fredericksburg High School, felt this would give her a chance to expand herself in the community For Annabelle Tamez, Ella Grandjean beyond sports. and Ella Hartmann, it was something “Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely they’d been working toward for a love the game and I am wanting to while. further my career in college,” she said. “Becoming a part of the fair court She can recall sitting on Main Street here in Gillespie County has been a watching the court’s float parade big goal of mine ever since I moved downtown and thinking she wanted to to Fredericksburg in the sixth grade,” be just like them. Fair Holds Deeper Meaning Though their paths may be different, one thing is true. This fair is more than just a fair to these girls. “Growing up, the fair has meant many things to me, from winning goldfish at carnival games, helping decorate the 4-H fair board, showing goats, heifers and a reserve exotic steer, helping my family produce the grand champion bale of hay, to being crowned fair queen,” Tatsch said. “The people of Gillespie County are deeply rooted in agriculture and the fair is so important because it gives this community the opportunity to come together and celebrate our heritage.” Strackbein, Hartmann and Grandjean felt the fair also established family traditions in their homes growing up and was always a way to bring people together. “From my first merry-go-round ride with my Nana, to baking with my
mom, picking out the best vegetables with my Omie, making my own art to exhibit and showing my Angoras, this fair has meant a connection to my family and my community,” Strackbein said. “It’s very special to us. Grandjean said aside from the community spirit the fair brings, she believes it also brings people together for good times with family, friends and neighbors.
With this year’s fair coinciding with the town’s 175th anniversary, the court got to have more experiences than those of previous years. “I feel like we are getting some bonus time serving on the fair court, since the previous girls were headed off to college,” Tatsch said. “We got to start working horse races, fundraisers and parades as soon as we were crowned. We have baked cakes, redecorated the fair float, attended chamber mixers, and dressed as bunnies in the Easter Fires pageant and settlers for the 175th Anniversary celebration.”
Anniversary Year Over the past year, being part of the court has provided multiple experiences for the queen and duchesses.
“Before you know it, you’ll be handing off a crown and sash to the next court,” she said. “Make the most of everything and just trust that, even

“It continues to blow my mind every year,” she said. “The fair is something that has been a huge part of Gillespie County and it shows how closely knit this community is. It’s something that comes every year and brings people from all over Texas to our small town and really just boosts the overall morale of our city.”
Tamez offered the advice to cherish every moment with the court.

future generations. It is our privilege to learn from the past, live in the present and teach the future to carry on the traditions that make this place we call home so amazing.”
Ridley Strackbein
2022 Gillespie County Fair Third Duchess
Strackbein said this helped her learn more about her heritage in Gillespie County and made her feel like part of the story her grandkids might read about someday.
Offering Advice to Future Courts And as the 134th court readies to pass on their crowns to future queens and duchesses, they hope to pass on a little wisdom, as well. “I hope to pass on to future courts what has so graciously been shared with me through this experience,” Tatsch said. “Gillespie County takes great pride in its past, present and

though whatever you’re having to do may seem a little silly at times, everything falls into place exactly the way it should.” Grandjean stressed having fun. “Enjoy your time with Lindsay, Marvin, Art, the fair directors, the GCFFA families and especially the girls on your court,” she said. She also wants future courts not to be afraid to ask questions. “The people around you are there to help you in your role of representing your community,” she said. “I have loved every moment of being on the fair court and will soak up all the time I have left with my fair grounds family.”
Royalty Through the Decades The Gillespie County Fair began featuring Gillespie County Fair Queens on the cover of its catalog in 1953. The first to appear on the cover was JoAnn Striegler, queen of the 65th fair. The Gillespie County Fair has gone through many transformations, hosting baseball tournaments and an all-male queen’s contest, but what remains is a lasting tradition honoring its queen and court. These are some of the Gillespie County Fair Queens through the decades.

Meier Honored for Years of Service Edward Meier has been in the cattle business for most of his life.
He has always loved show cattle, especially the breeding cattle. He loved the Gillespie County Fair shows because it gave a “good ol’ county fair” feeling.
He showed cattle from 1962 until 2015. He also ran the Lyndon B. Johnson National Park Ranch for 37 years.
The committees were always kind and helpful, and the grounds were great, which made for great shows. For a few years in the 80’s and 90’s, the shows would have as many cattle as up in Alpine.
He has served on the Cattle Committee here at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds for 30 years. Back in the 1980s, he would put on steer show clinics for the 4-H and FFA kids so they would gain better knowledge on the best ways to show their cattle. There were sometimes up to 40 kids who would attend.
The Gillespie County Fair Grounds would like to thank Edward Meier and his family for all the time they spent out here at the fair grounds.
