Into the Wild By the end of the book, I thought I understood McCandless' character, and I thought Krakauer was probably right in putting his finger on exactly what caused his death. I was moved by his plight regardless of his possible foolishness in venturing into Denali, and the final scenes involving Chris' family were emotionally devastating. You need not be an outdoorsman to appreciate it, and in fact unlike Into Thin Air the book is completely accessible to those who know nothing about the subject. I think this book is destined to become a classic.

The Curiosities: A Collection of Stories The stories vary in length from a couple of pages to 20ish (at least via a digital book). There are a number of standouts from each other, as well as a number that just went on and on and seemed to get lost. That was expected though, as what they have done on their website is new and different, clever and quirky.
The End of Mr. Y Ariel lives a rather hand-to-mouth life, in a seedy apartment building with inadequate heat, on a budget that makes Ramen noodles a feast, and in the company of an odd assortment of characters. On the day of the building collapse, she has to walk home through an unfamiliar neighborhood, wanders into a used bookshop, and finds the elusive last book by the subject of her thesis, The End of Mr. Y. At this point, her somewhat unconventional life takes a turn for the bizarre, and the reader should strap on the roller coaster seat belt and hold on, hands inside the car please.
Menage I admire Shulman's prose style, particularly her precise attention to word choice. Her good-natured mocking of New York's literary scene and of the pretentious class is priceless. She pokes fun at writers who, like Zoltan and Heather, don't really write, who succumb to (or invent) distractions rather than practicing their craft. More importantly, her skillful depiction of a husband and wife as manipulators who use a third party to jockey for a better position in their marriage is deliciously acerbic. Despite my reservations about the cartoonish depictions of Mack and Zoltan, their three-way interaction with Heather is sufficiently entertaining, and Shulman's prose sufficiently keen, to make it easy for me to recommend this novel.
Angels at the Table: A Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy Christmas Story "Angels at the Table: A Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy Christmas Story" by Debbie Macomber is a very sweet and short story of the slightly bumbling interventions of four angels in the lives of humans. While their pokes and prods derail the couple from their intended path, by the end of the book, all is back in the order it was meant to be.
A Blink of the Screen: Collected Shorter Fiction An excellent collection of short stories and other pieces. I really enjoyed the Discworld ones the most but there are some strong ones that do not relate to that universe. Not sure this will appeal to none Pratchett fans but I really liked it.

A Dog's Journey I read A Dog's Purpose and loved every minute of it. Preordered A Dog's Journey and couldn't wait until it was delivered.
The Pursued Yes, this crime novel was first published in 2011 and it is by the C.S. Forester who wrote the Hornblower novels. No, Forester is not still alive, writing his novels in some kind of cryogenic writer's den. The Pursued was written in 1935 when C.S. was already a successful author with one Hornblower novel to his credit. His publisher promptly misplaced the manuscript of The Pursued and it remained lost until 1999. I have a sneaky feeling the publisher lost it on purpose. The Pursued is not what the public would have been expecting, or comfortable with, from the author of Hornblower and The African Queen.
The Second Son "The Second Son" completes Jonathon Raab's Berlin trilogy, taking protagonist Police Inspector Nikolai Hoffner, to 1936 Spain in search of his missing younger son, Georg. Hoffner has been forced out of the Berlin Police because of
his partially Jewish parentage. Using his connections with the German criminal underground, he goes to Barcelona, stronghold of the Spanish Republican Government (but in the hands of the Anarchists and Communists) to track down his newsreel photographer son who vanished while on a film assignment. What follows is a dangerous road trip across Spain, crisscrossing belligerent lines, toward a destination that is as dark and tragic as can be found in the literature of any time period.
Together for Christmas There are people who are stalking Kristin, she wants a bank loan and she's behind in the payments. She just wants her sister to act like a family once her filming is done but she knows she will just hop on her plane and leave. Maybe with another snow blizzard she will be forced to stay.
Vultures at Twilight Vultures at Twilight is the first book in a new mystery series by Charles Atkins. Long time friends and neighbors Lil Campbell and Ada Stauss are the main captivating characters in this witty, fast paced mystery which takes place in a small New England town. It is compulsively readable! I preordered this book and read it in 4 days, only because I had to take breaks to go to work! The author wastes no time bringing the reader into the story with exceptional character development and storytelling. I've read 26 books in a little over a year and can say that I truly did not want this book to end. Loved, loved, loved it and I am totally ready to continue following the adventures of the characters created by Charles Atkins.

Wrapped in Starlight Great book. This is probably the best book I have read by this author in a long time. We find out why the starlight engines sing.
Year of the Black Rainbow One of the greatest books ever from the greatest musician ever. The Kindle Store has been graced by the glory of Claudio Sanchez - what a milestone!
The Gospel of Judas Near the Dead Sea, a new scroll from the time of Jesus has been discovered. The church sends Rome teacherscholar Father Leo Newman to investigate and translate the newest find. Leo is going through a difficult period as he has doubts about his chosen avocation ever since he met and sinned by having an affair with Madeline Brewer. Still, Leo immediately travels to Jerusalem to join an international team inspecting the rich find, but his assignment is to concentrate on one particular papyrus.
The Inheritance John Cade, an Oxford professor of history and a hero of World War II, is shot to death in his mansion. His younger son, Stephen, is charged with murder and put on trial - he was found in his father's study, locked from inside, a few moments after the shot and his fingerprints are on the key to the study door and on the murder weapon. He also has a motive - he was estranged from his father for two years and only came home when Cade was about to change his will and practically disinherit him, turning the mansion into a museum. During the trial, Stephen pleads innocence, but he faces death sentence - hanging is still lawful in 1959, when the action is set. Inspector Trave, the detective who arrested Stephen based on evidence, has more and more doubts while the trial unfolds. Probably the fact, that Stephen reminds Trave of his son Joe, who died in a tragic accident, adds to Trave's belief in Stephen's innocence.
The King of Diamonds In 1958 at the Old Bailey in London, David Swain stands on trial for the murder of Ethan Mendel in what has been sensationalized as a crime of passion. David accused Ethan of interfering with his relationship with Katya Osman. Oxford Detective Inspector William Trave testifies, which is a prime reason Swain is convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Although he did his duty, something about the case annoys Trave.

The Overseer Rumors abound in twentieth century academic circles that in the sixteenth century, a contemporary of Machiavelli wrote a treatise on how to rule the world that makes The Prince look like an elementary school primer. The book, On Supremacy, was considered so harsh, the Pope killed its author and banned the printing of its content.
Prince's Courtesan Outlawed noblewoman Jaida Lianl had been everything from a high speed courier on Arcalis Prime to a waitress in the cloud cafe’s on Selenis. Different careers, different names, different identities. When a cover got this easy so easy she started to believe it herself she knew she’d been in the same place too long. It was time to move on before she got comfortable and started to make mistakes. Mistakes would allow Imperial Prince Sethan to find her, and if that happened, people would die…
Rough Play Heroine Charlotte has escaped her marriage that nearly destroyed her ability to act her true sexual self: being a submissive. Her overly sexually dominant husband abused her trust and pushed her to a point she felt "wrong".
Instead, she's resolved to sticking to her job as match-maker, finding her clients a perfect happy-ever-after, since apparently she has horrible luck creating one for herself. Her unique gift (you'll have to read the book to find out how she's unique) brings her clients love and passion, something Charlotte never thinks she'll be able to find, until unfortunate events lead her to one man that has the power (literally) to change that.
Jody Richards and the Secret Potion The Secret Potion by Tony Flood is a terrific tantalising tale that will have you on tender hooks by the end of chapter 1. Jody Richards is a well crafted heroin for all children to relate to. After reading it myself, I would thoroughly recommend it to children and young adults who are fans of the fantasy world. A must read for all you Harry Potter fans out there!
At Play in the Fields of the Lord Rarely have I ever found an author whose work so moves me to not merely observe the characters, but instead BECOME the characters. Indeed, as the book's storyline progresses, the reader is drawn into a web of spiritual doubt and political corruption which leads the reader to question his own faith, morals, and even deeds. After all, at least once in our lives we shall become Lewis Moons for at least a brief moment. Whether this fleeting instance destroys an Amazonian culture or simply estranges your inlaws depends upon that person's individual circumstances. In the end, the reader *becomes* each of the novel's characters as we struggle to discover our purpose & self identity. In the end, it is the reader who is left asking, "Why?"

Call of the Herald I found this book hard to get into at first. The writing just seemed amateurish at best and it seemed like it was taking a long time to get into the meat of the story. But, I gave it a chance and I'm glad I did. When the story started to the unfold, it seemed like the quality of writing also picked up. It's not perfect by any means. The writing isn't entirely consistent in quality and the story sometimes needs to be reined in, but overall it's an interesting read.
Conflict of Empires Without spoiling too much of the story, some armchair generals may take issue with Eskkar's tactics in the big battle. I certainly had my questions. At the end of the book Barone compares his battle to Alexander's actions and the odds against him at Gaugamela. This is an unfair comparison because Alexander's army was significantly more advanced than the armies of ancient Mesopotamia, and the Akkadians and Sumerians were on a more equal footing than Macedonians and Persians. That aside, I would look forward to a 4th installment, but unfortunately Mr. Barone did not offer any clues to his future plans. Enjoy!
Curse the Names Curse the Names takes us to the Sangre de Cristo mountains of New Mexico, leaving behind the urban surreal of Arellano's previous books. But this is southwestern surreal with more than a few a few shots of noir thrown in as
characters casually betray one another. There's a long-nailed Goth blood tech, a hippie identity thief, a boozy family doctor, a malevolent g-man, end-of-the- worlders, and some scientists who know too much and say too little. Curse the Names has tight noirish writing and 1940s characters spun for the 21st century. Through James Oberhelm, we see how our decisions start chain reactions that take down more than we can know.
Tears of Kerberos After reading 'Siege of Titan' I was very much looking forward to the sequel 'Tears of Kerberos'. The story continues to follow the adventures of Spartan, an ex-pit fighter turned Marine who has become a sergeant in the Confederate Marine Corps and is in the thick of a fierce battle on Prime. We also follow a character called Teresa who is sent on a secret mission to gain information the enemy leadership. The action and pace from the first book continues as we are plunged further into Spartans world and we learn more about what he is fighting and the threat against the worlds in his system.
The Four Ms. Bradwells I recommend this to readers who love a good "whodunnit," and also to those who value an honest take on the things that hamper women, that make it difficult to be open and trusting of each other. This is a strong read that leaves you thinking about your own life, and all that has remained unsaid.

The Lemon Table Even though Barnes' subject of age and death may seem a morbid topic, these beautifully written stories have a wealth of humor and warmth and dreamy substance. The final story relates a composer's inability to finish his 8th symphony (?Sibelius?) and uses symbols of death (the lemon, flying cranes) in a most poetic way. This is one of the finest collections of short stories I've read this year. Highly recommended on every level.
The Magicians of Night After the death of his mentor, an apprentice wizard must fight to escape a world he doesn’t understand When the wizard Jaldis heard the cry from beyond the Void, telling of a world where magic was dead and begging for his aid, he and his apprentice, Rhion, went to help. Crossing the Void takes all of their strength, and when Rhion awakes on the other side, he learns that the task is beyond them. Jaldis is dead, and the portal home gone with him. Now he is trapped in a place called Earth, in a nation beset from all sides by its enemies. The men who called him here need a wizard to save them, and though Rhion is but a novice, he will have to do. He may even find a way home, but only if he can find a way to serve this mysterious empire that they call the Third Reich. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Barbara Hambly, including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s personal collection.
The Rainbow Abyss This is another universe-changing story the characters move from their own universe into another where the laws of magic are different. A reference indicates that this is the same "universe" as the Ingold books but is otherwise unrelated.
The Secret of the Swamp King This book had the same laugh-out-loud moments as the first but this one, I think, had more sad moments than The Bark of the Bog Owl. Aidan is growing up and facing the world as it is and not as he hoped it would be. It is heartbreaking at times and yet there is beauty in Aidan's strength and in his resolve to do the right thing . . . for the feechies, for his father, and for his king. He is truly a hero.
The Undrowned Child
Obviously a huge lover of Venice (she lives there herself these days), the story also reads as a love letter to Venice. I was already fascinated by Her colourful history and unique setting but I think Michelle will inspire many others in a fascination with the floating city.

Project Rebirth: Survival and the Strength of the Human Spirit from 9/11 Survivors Written in conjunction with the documentary Rebirth, a full decade in the making, an uplifting look at the lives of nine individuals whose lives were forever changed by the largest tragedy our nation has ever faced. The images of the burning towers, the heartbroken friends building memorials, the minute-by-minute accounts of the horrors of that day-all are indelibly etched on our collective consciousness. But what of those left behind after 9/11? What have they, and we, learned from the gift of time? In Project Rebirth, a psychologist and a journalist examine the lives of nine people who were directly affected by the events of September 11, 2001. Written concurrently with the filming of a forthcoming documentary, it is uniquely positioned to tackle the questions raised about how people react in the face of crippling grief, how you maintain hope for a future when your life as you knew it is destroyed, and the amazing ability of humans to focus on the positive aspects of day-to-day living in the face of tragedy. The project follows people dedicated to rebuilding, both physically and emotionally. Spirituality, resilience, and hope are at the center of their stories. Brian, who lost his firefighter brother, spent two years working at Ground Zero and then helped to rebuild the PATH train station. Tanya, who lost her fiancee on 9/11, finds new love, new life, and joy as a mother in the years following, all doors she thought closed to her forever. Not a book that recounts the events of that day, and not a book about grief, Project Rebirth is a book about resilience and finding inner peace.
Search the Seven Hills Impeccably researched mystery set in ancient Rome, a young man searches for the kidnapper of his feisty girlfriend. Fascinating glimpse of this time period and a great story that is still searching for a memorable title.
Shadow Fall Those who have invested in this series will be glad to know that Kira finally has solid information about her mysterious mother and her relation to Balm. The relationship between Kira and Khefar is satisfying to read. The powerful (and studly) Khefar believes in Kira and is her touchstone. However, I did have one big problem with this story. Kira has asked Balm over and over about her mother and Balm had denied her. When Balm finally gives her the big clue, what does she do? She waits! She doesn't open the chest immediately. It is not until page 141 that she finally gets the nerve to open it! Kira received the chest very early in the story and I was really frustrated with Kira for waiting so long. Also, the action only really begins after Kira opens the chest but before that point, it is very dull as I kept waiting for her to do something. So a third of the book had me frustrated. Except that section, this was a thrilling and exciting read as Kira must battle unbelievable powers to claim her birthright.
Slag Attack Another great story from Andersen Prunty. I have mentioned this in other reviews but I am a huge fan and can't get enough of this guy's work. Slag Attack is an apocalyptic tale of a different kind. In the four interconnected stories we learn how the slags came to be and their affects on society. We follow these events through several different characters which is why the book is broken up into these different stories. If you are a fan of this type of fiction, why not give Andersen Prunty a try. You will become a fan like me, I guarantee it! Cannot recommend this one enough!
Soul Thief: A Demon Trappers Novel I love Riley & Beck because they are a hot mess, and their hot mess is more real to me than any perfect love story. I love them because they don't pull any punches, they go for the jugular, they bleed all over the pages. The characters are so far apart, and they've miles to go before they can even really reach each other. If only Riley knew what Beck was really thinking, maybe she wouldn't hurt herself so much. If only Beck could believe he was worth a damn, he might actually get the girl he loves. How often can two people go to war against each other before there's nothing left to blow up?

Secrets at St Jude's: New Girl All of the characters in this YA novel are immediately likable (okay with a few exceptions!). The description of the boarding school and of the "Daffodil room" made me feel as though I was right there. I instantly liked all of the girls, including Amy. All of the main characters are extremely diversed but, somehow, they all gravitated to each other and
managed to get into all kinds of hilarious situations together. What I also liked about this book is that while each of the girls play to their own strengths, there is no petty jealousy or evil plotting and gossiping against each other - although this book does touch on some serious issues (finally! an English book that gives a clear definition of the word snogging!!! - I always wondered exactly what that word meant and I now know), the book never gets bogged down into the standard corny, overly serious stuff. Of course, there are dances and boys and more boys and lots of talk of clothes, etc. (ah to be 15 again!) but the author manages to blend both the petty teen stuff with the more adult issues (drinking, relationships and more importantly, friendships).
Out of Range This book begins when Joe learns about the death/suicide of a good friend and fellow Game Warden and the man responsible for the highly visible Jackson Hole district. Joe is selected from a short list of Game Wardens to take over his friend's former district. As you might expect, Joe sees all kinds of reasons to doubt the "official" findings behind his friend's death, and it doesn't take Joe long to make enemies of the same people that apparently weren't getting along with the former Warden. Added to the problems in Jackson Hole, Joe is also having marital problems with the wife he temporally left behind when he had to relocate to the new district, and if that weren't enough, she is also experiencing her own form of grave danger.
Shades of Midnight This may be the very best dramatic and dark vampire series out there! It is one of my top vampire series ever. I cannot say enough about the skill of this author! There are never any jarring changes to the series (I quit reading one author because of such changes)and the plot and characters never disappoint! The story line thread from book to book is exciting and makes you want the next in the series to be immediately available upon completing each story. The love story for Kade and Alex is as intense and hot as the previous romances, and the setting is beautifully described, especially if one is familiar with Alaska or similar landscapes in Canada and the U.S. The setting adds an additional element of danger and excitement. Tegan's story was my favorite, but now shares equal honor with Kade's story. There is such intimate detail about Kade's family, especially his twin, and the other characters in Harmony that brings
an almost three dimensional feeling to the entire story. I was very touched by the insights into the Ancient's mind. I don't want to be a spoiler, but I will say that for the first time I felt a human connection to the Ancient and sympathy for him. It is the first time we have really been given insight into an Ancient's thoughts. The scene with the Ancient and Jenna was very moving and introspective. I cannot wait to see where this new Jenna thread will lead. I enjoyed the expansion of the brother like relationship between Kade and Brock and the kinship between all the warriors. I like Hunter more and more. Another thing the author does extremely well is the integration of the new mates and warriors into the Order and the continuous development of the Order warriors we already know. I really enjoy the humorous, stress relieving dialog between the warriors. I will now wait very very impatiently for the next book.
Sisters of Glass Beyond mastering a style of writing and story telling that makes you reluctant to leave even for a moment. St John paints a landscape that illustrates a troubling, thought provoking understanding of computer and biotechnology breaking moral boundaries. His writing conveys disturbing images of a not to distant future overcome by technology and greed. Into this future tapestry he drops a novel that starts off on a dead run. Every scene is ripe with conflict, filled with action. Every sentence cut and fashioned leaving the reader with crafted raw elegance. Not just a great read packed with interesting, unforgettable characters. There is a hero, who acts like a hero should. Karl is an ordinary guy with a bad heart, who loves dogs and carries a short barrel shotgun. He finds himself rescuing one of the most beautiful women in the world. Pursued by pure evil through a maze of corporate intrigue set against the mean streets of 21st century Los Angeles. There is no escape leaving the only alternative an ultimate test of character and courage. Bone crunching action rockets you through the pages. It never lets up. You find yourself pulling for the hero from the first page to the last. St John has created a thinking person's action novel. A book with something to say and some of the best reading fun you can find.
The Coffee Trader I found myself drinking more coffee than usual while reading this novel. Something about the narrative had me smelling freshly ground coffee beans constantly. Imagine a world without Starbucks! One part of "The Coffee Trader" that I really enjoyed, amongst many, is the Europeans' astonished reaction after their first taste of this bitter, stimulating brew, and their realization that fortunes could be made with the beverage. Lienzo even foresees a day when taverns, serving coffee, will spring up on every corner. Imagine that?

The Grapple While not an entry point, this is actually one of the better novels in this series. Rather than a static - and sometimes unconvincing - recreation of European WWI trench warfare on America soil, a Fuehrer rearming the Confederate States of America in the interwar years, and the Battle of Stalingrad retold as the Battle of Pittsburgh, this novel has a lot of mobile warfare as the USA drives into the heart of the Confederacy. Turtledove continues, from earlier novels in the series, bringing in tactical innovations not seen in our version of WWII. There is also more attention to the other theatres of war outside of North America. And, in this harsher alternate to our world, a lot of thought is expended on what to do with various rebels be they Canadian, Mormon, or the soon to be vanquished Confederates. Genocide is irrefutably exposed in Camp Determination where one characters meets an unexpected end and another one meets an all too expected end.
The Last Apprentice: Rage of the Fallen I have enjoyed the entire Last Apprentice series. The books have a nicely eerie, medieval feel, and the writing style is clean. This part of the series is no exception and manages to close a major plot point while opening up some new very interesting plot threads without it feeling like some bogus attempt to unnaturally extend the series. My only criticism is that the book is almost over-edited. The beginning seems rushed to set up the main action more quickly than is natural. In particular, the group meets a benefactor and immediately sets off with him in a rather incautious way that seems very out of character for Gregory. But that is a fairly minor flaw in the beginning only. Once the story gets going it is action-packed and flows more naturally.
The Man with the Iron Heart In this not so subtle parallel of modern fourth generation warfare, Turtledove again weaves and alternative history. He leaves behind his favored series of a post Confederate victory history and weaves a new world of a post Nazi Germany where some refuse to surrender to conventional defeat. Instead, a growing resistance in Germany builds to a fever pitch leading to the inevitable rebirth of the National Socialists. This leads America to the horns of a dilemma between The Forever War or giving up hard-fought gains. It is the same dilemma faced in Vietnam in the late 20th century and now faced in Afghanistan in the early 21st. Did not Mark Twain say that history does not repeat itself but sometimes it rhymes? Turtledove reveals how true that could be with minor twists to what was which turn to what could have been, and what is now. The characters are believable and easy to relate with. The plot is, in light of the distinct parallels with today's news, somewhat predictable yet immensely enjoyable all the same. As might be expected, the ending leaves one with an obvious opening to sequels whether such are in the works or not. A thought-provoking read that reveals that there are no easy answers and perhaps, in such situations, the choice between two paths may lead to equally unwanted historical consequences. Very well done.
The Night Fairy I couldn't put it down. The writing is beautiful and the illustrations made me wish the fairy would leap out of the book and be a part of my world. I can't wait to read this to my daughter. I also think this would be an excellent book for kids who are ready to take the next step to bigger chapter books. The language, while beautiful, is easy to read and each chapter is interesting and fast paced. The content is engaging and the character goes through some emotional development that may be age appropriate for the 7 - 9 y.o. set.
The Tale of Krispos In reading this entertaining book I kept having a feeling of deja vu. While enjoyable, the book's story seemed really familiar. Well, Byzantine history fans, guess what. The book is a thinly disguised novelization of the rise and, I admit to a lesser extent, the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Basil I "The Macedonian". The story of Krispos' (Basil I) early life, both in his village and as a captive beyond the Empire's frontiers, along with his early adventures in Videssos (Constantinople), is essentially true history. This even extends to very specific details the abbot discovering his possibilities, the wrestling match, his job a groom to the Avtokrator's (Autokrator is a Byzantine title) uncle Petronas (Bardas) and attendant to Anthimos III (Michael III). Of course, the Byzantine Empire did not have magic, but that just makes this series of books fun. Enjoy!

The Tragedy of Arthur The play is reproduced in its entirety in the second part and indeed, it reads like Shakespeare (I read all of his major plays in grad school and have seen many of them performed). It's absolutely brazen that Arthur Phillips could have mimicked Shakespeare so successfully and with seeming authenticity. So in the end, the theme comes down to identity. As Phillips the memoirist writes, "So much of Shakespeare is about being at a loss for identity being lost somewhere without the self-defining security of home and security, lost in a shipwreck, confused with a long-lost twin, stripped of familiar power, taken for a thief, taken for the opposite gender, taken for a pauper, believing oneself an orphan."
The Whiskey Rebels This book has it all. Lively action, intrigues within intrigues, daring adventure, taut writing, sparkling dialogue, incredible plotting, depth of characterization, a sense of humor, and a sure hand at the literary tiller. It is so deeply atmospheric that you feel like you are in 1792 Philadelphia. The portrayals of various actual historical figures are realistic, believable, and enjoyable. Hallowed names of yore are brought to vibrant life, sounding and acting as real as your own family, yet their qualities which will make them famous still shine through. In The Whiskey Rebels actual historical personages are not the focus though and the stories of the two fictional protagonists is where this book truly dazzles. As Liss switches between them, chapter by chapter, I was so caught up in their individual experiences that I was inevitably jarred by switching viewpoints. His writing so tightly draws you in and is so absorbing that you don't want to leave the character you're with yet within a few sentences you are once again completely absorbed with the current character. So it goes, back and forth, until the stunning denouement. If there is one thing that strikes me as magical about Liss's writing it is how well he does period dialogue. Writing compelling and scintillating dialogue is hard enough without having to make it sound natural to the 1790's. Liss does this with ease though the conversations never ring false and they never stray from their period. The magical part though is the dialogue is as clear and understandable as speaking with a friend.
Winesburg, Ohio Sherwood Anderson published this collection of short stories in 1919 all set in fictional town of Winesburg, Ohio. Even though it's written in the third person, it's told through the narrative voice of George Willard, the town reporter, who shows up in most of the stories, sometimes taking an active role and at other times just telling a story. It is obvious that the writer loves these people, and is frustrated at the isolation and unhappiness of their lives, even though he makes it clear that they hold within themselves everything needed to make them happy. The character in the first story is a dying old writer who is attempting to write about all the people he has known as a "book of grotesques". What follows is the collection of stories, which each character fulfilling that expectation. There are the young lovers who don't quite connect there is a old man so obsessed with religious fervor that he attempts to sacrifice his grandson there is a married man who regrets it all and tries to warn a younger man of future unhappiness there's a doctor and a sick woman who try to connect. The book is full of people who toil all their lives and never achieve happiness. As I made my way through the book I kept hoping that even one of the characters would rise above the morass. It didn't happen.
The writer has a wonderful sense of place and the town of Winesburg in the early part of the 20th Century is very real. These people were not poor or disadvantaged in the usual sense of the word they didn't suffer fire, floods or famine. Instead, they trapped themselves in their own psychological webs that made it impossible for them to lead anything but sad unfulfilled lives. This is a fine book and stands alone as a clear voice of its time.
Beyond the Body Farm Dr. Bill Bass is, without a doubt, the most famous and prestigious forensic anthropologist in the United States, if not the world. He is the creator of the famous Body Farm at the University of Tennessee Knoxville campus and he has consulted on thousands of cases throughout his long career. This book is a group of cases that he found to be of particular interest and range from researching ancient bones in the Middle East to digging up the remains of the Big Bopper. The book contains about 15 such stories, each roughly a chapter long and each discusses various unusual aspects of forensic anthropology. It is well written and has a touch of dark humor added. If you like crime shows and forensic shows, you will love this book. It contains just enough science to make it interesting to those with a science background, but not so much as to overwhelm the average reader.
Con Ed In the realm of mysteries, you don't often get as amusing a read as this first novel by Matthew Klein. Not only is it about a huge and intricate scam, but it targets some very shady and dangerous criminal types one a too-smart-foranyone's-good Las Vegas casino operator, the other a Russian mobster. A shred of social consciousness won't be found in either portfolio. The wondrous achievement of the book is Klein's expertise in imagining the intricate scheme he builds a story around, and detailing every step of the way for our edification and fascination. He's actually roping us into it as if we, the readers, are the marks. Dangerous and hilarious.

Dead Reckoning With her knack for being in trouble’s way, Sookie Stackhouse witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte’s, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. Sookie suspects otherwise, but her attention is divided when she realizes that her lover, Eric Northman, and his “child” Pam are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, Sookie is drawn into the plot which is much more complicated than she knows.
Callsign: King King's girlfriend, Dr. Sara Fogg, goes to Africa to do her CDC work. She's sends a message to King, because something seems off before she even leaves. She arrives first and is promptly attacked in the hospital. King is attacked on the way to the hospital. He gets to the hospital in time to be in on the attack, but too late to save Sara. Eventually, they link up. King saves Sara, neutralizes the danger. And everyone goes home. I am, of course leaving out all the action (and there's plenty). And I'm not giving away the new nemesis either. Buy the book. By the way, my real score is 4.5 stars. The main story ending was short of being "the end". The actual ending lets you know more is coming.
Cold Touch: Extrasensory Agents Cold Touch is one of the best books I've read all year. It is filled with suspense, action, and romance. I personally am hoping and praying we get more books from Leslie Parrish in the future!
Dark Lord Sadly, the story does have its problems. First of all, Mr. Greenwood did go too far with the sexuality in the story - it makes it feel like the target audience was randy teenage boys, and it cheapens the whole thing. Secondly, after the first instance, the drinking of Rod Everlar's blood for its healing properties quickly took on a creepy and disturbing feel. And my final complaint is that the book ends with a cliffhanger, demanding that you read the next installment of the series, and keeping this book from being a free-standing work in its own right. But, that said, I really did enjoy this book. The action was great, and the magic was exciting and well-drawn. Also, I really did like the characters of Taeauna and Rod Everlar, and cared for them along their adventures. So, let me say that I did love this book, and I do recommend it...with some minor caveats.
Secrets from Beyond The Grave Well researched and interesting. But I have never read one that actually keep you so interested as this one. From the opening introduction, "They are praying that you will not come here," Perry draws you into a gripping journey through the two worlds of eternity. I have read the Bible all of my life, but the research, word studies, history and the stories will inform and amaze the reader. He answers many questions I have had, especialy the one about the souls of aborted infants! I am sure some will disagree with certain parts, but you will be hard pressed to prove him wrong from a Biblical perspective. Get this book. It is also a great resource for the "unsaved" person.

The Black Tower While the real star of the book is Restoration Paris itself, Vidocq is a close second in all his animal ferocity and uncanny brilliance. Think a French Sherlock Holmes with an edge. The supporting characters are fleshed out beautifully, both men and women, rich and poor, and I'm not describing them because their identity and characters unfold with the twists and turns in the story and are best savored without knowing too much going in. Every time I thought the story had nowhere to go, it went somewhere new, and the characters continued to develop in their complexity and nuance.
The Blood Lance British author Smith's so-so sequel to The Painted Messiah provides more of the backstory of a major character from the previous book, Lady Kate Kenyon. In 1997, 21-year-old Kate and her 37-year-old husband, Lord Robert, are honeymooning in the Swiss Alps. While attempting to climb the north face of the Eiger, the couple are attacked by two men, who push Robert off the mountain and almost do the same to Kate before she turns the tables on her assailants.
Years later, Kate works with a former CIA agent, Thomas Malloy, to battle the Knights of the Holy Lance, conspirators somehow connected with the Blood Lance of the Cathars, a relic the Nazis also pursued. The truth behind the tragedy on the Eiger will shock few genre-savvy readers, who may also be bothered by some inexact detail...
Amethyst Destiny The newest Jewels of Time fantasy romance (see Sapphire Dreams) is a wonderful entry in a fun series. The lead couple is a fascinating pairing as she has the necklace and he the ring, but it is their hearts that make the magic. The audience will relish Pamela Montgomerie's entertaining tale.
Angelfall The book is written in a narrative style that I don't think I've ever seen done before, at least not that I can recall, and I can't remember ever even hearing of it being done well until now. It's told in the first person, present tense. It took me a couple of pages to get used to it, but then I found myself liking it--a lot, actually. (If you write an email or something after reading a chapter or two of this book, you might find yourself writing that way...don't hit send until you check!) The advantages of this style are readily apparent and more significant than you would think until you see it. It's the fastest-paced of all possible styles, since you feel as if it's happening in real time right now. There's none of that standard sense of anticlimax that comes from knowing that a typical first-person past-tense "narrator" would have had to come through everything alive and well, more or less, to "write the book" later. There also isn't that sense of retrospective omniscience that comes from a "narrator" character supposedly recounting the story later with the blanks filled in. We have only the information the character has, and the result is an exceptionally engaging experience of feeling yourself in her shoes. This book is a winner, and its author has it going on with this lineup of unique characters and their "beginning-afterthe-end" post-apocalyptic backdrop. There an experience here that's definitely worth expanding on I'm already looking forward to the next book in this series.
Baby's First Book of Seriously Fucked-up Shit While all the stories in this book are great, my favories were Ridi Bobo as it is one of the most outrageous stories I have read in a while only in the way things are described and explained. Hilarious! You will never look at clowns the same way again. Bucky goes to Church was, in a word "WOW!". This story is worth the price of admission itself. I still cannot get this one out of my head. Really leaves you thinking. One Flesh was another well conceived story. A father and son that you won't soon forget. Holy Fast, Holy Feast is just twisted as much for how it is written as for what it is about. All of the stories are loaded with either tons of violence, gore and/or sex. So if this isn't your cup of tea, you may want to avoid this book. If however you love your stories bizarre, violent, and (sometimes) funny you cannot go wrong in making the purchase

Terrorist Rehabilitation: The U.S. Experience in Iraq 2011 | ISBN-10: 1439852499 | PDF | 454 pages | 7 MB Because terrorists are made, not born, it is critically important to world peace that detainees and inmates influenced by violent ideology are deradicalized and rehabilitated back into society. Exploring the challenges in this formidable endeavor, Terrorist Rehabilitation: The U.S. Experience in Iraq demonstrates through the actual experiences of military personnel, defense contractors, and Iraqi nationals that deradicalization and rehabilitation programs can succeed and have the capability to positively impact thousands of would-be terrorists globally if utilized to their full capacity. Custodial and community rehabilitation of terrorists and extremists is a new frontier in the fight against terrorism. This forward-thinking volume: Highlights the success of a rehabilitation program curriculum in Iraq Encourages individuals and governments to embrace rehabilitation as the next most logical step in fighting terrorism Examines the recent history of threat groups in Iraq Demonstrates where the U.S. went awry in its war effort, and the steps it took to correct the situation Describes religious, vocational training, education, creative expression, and Tanweer programs introduced to the detainee population Provides insight into future steps based on lessons learned from current rehabilitation programs It is essential that we shift the focus from solely detainment and imprisonment to addressing the ideological mindset during prolonged incarceration. It is possible to effect an ideological transformation in detainees that qualifies them to be reclassified as no longer posing a security threat. This volume demonstrates that with the proper program and encouragement, a detainee’s misunderstanding or extremist ideology can be replaced with the principles of moderation, toleration, and coexistence.

Instantaneous Personal Magnetism 2010 | ISBN-10: 1453754601 | PDF | 400 pages | 20 MB Instantaneous Personal Magnetism reveals how to create "The Rasputin Effect", that incredible power of charisma that draws people into your web of influence. Instant Personal Magnetism It is through the use of this technology of Instant Personal Magnetism that you can create what others have called "The Rasputin Effect" the ability to powerfully influence the people around you.
Born a Russian peasant, Grigori Efimovich Rasputin, mastered personal magnatism so that EVERYONE he met fell under is spell. 1. The Instant Personal Magnetism System was the first to be issued and appeared in 1925 when there were no other systems in existence. 2. Today it is the Standard Method, and is so recognized everywhere. 3. It is the only System that is used by the International Magnetism Club, and that has been adopted in schools and various other educational institutions. 4. It is the only System that actually produces lasting results. 5. It is the only System that has helped a long list of successful men and women in all walks of life to acquire a magnetic personality with no failure where its students have been in earnest and ambitious to win the highest goal of earthly existence. 6. Attracted by its success, imitators many years ago began to issue cheap and loudly advertised courses of training, and approached as near as they dared to our methods but, for fear of becoming involved in lawsuits for infringement, they avoided all the essential value of our instruction, with the result that they were discredited and all went out of business. 7. Since then similar imitators are likely to appear, with the same inability to guide their students to the successful acquisition of personal magnetism. 8. As personal magnetism is life itself, only the best instruction is desirable. Low priced competitive systems that accomplish nothing for their students are the highest priced in the end. Besides producing failure, they dis courage the buyers, drive them away from the study and thereby deprive them of the greatest blessings in life. 9. There is BUT ONE GENUINE METHOD it is the Instant Personal Magnetism System long tried, thoroughly tested, and uniformly successful.
Flying the Black Flag: A Brief History of Piracy 2007 | ISBN-10: 0275977811 | PDF | 224 pages | 3 MB Many peoples throughout history have fought pirates, writes Alfred Bradford in Flying the Black Flag. Some have lost and some have won. We should learn from their experience. From Odysseus—the original pirate of literature and lore—through Blackbeard and the feared pirates of the Spanish Main, his book reveals the strategies and methods pirates used to cheat, lie, kill, and rob their way into the historical record, wreaking terror in their bloody wakes. The story begins with a discussion of Piracy and the Suppression of Piracy in the Ancient World. It details, for example, how the Illyrians used pirate vessels to try to wrest control of the Adriatic Coast from the mighty Romans, as well as how the intrepid Vikings went from pirate raids to the conquest of parts of Western Europe.
Moving into the 17th century and to the New World, Bradford depicts the golden age of the pirates. Here are the Spanish Buccaneers and the fabled Caribbean stronghold of Tortuga. Here are Henry Morgan, Captain Kidd, and their fearsome counterparts. But piracy was hardly just a Western phenomenon. The Barbary Pirates looks East to examine the struggle between Christian and Muslim in the Mediterranean, while To the Shores of Tripoli details the American conflict with the Barbary Pirates. It reveals the lessons of a war conducted across a great distance against a nebulous enemy, a war in which victory was achieved only by going after the pirates' sponsor. On the South China Coast, we meet the first Dragon Lady, leader of Chinese pirates. As intriguing as these tales of the past are in and of themselves, the stories and their swashbuckling villains hold lessons for us even today. In Conclusions and Reflections, Bradford gathers all of the chords together, discussing the conditions under which piracy arises, the conditions under which pirates organize and become more powerful, and the methods used to suppress piracy. Finally, he examines similarities between pirates and terrorists—and whether the lessons learned from the wars against pirates of the past might also apply to modern day terrorists.

These were mainly dl'd from here(the other site) so thanks to the original uploaders, and if you could not use pdf format in future, it would be appreciated . Also a lot of them are tagged to show author, title, genre etc. There is a text file in the root that lists all books in the folder order, so download that first and have a look see if there is anything you like.

The Brilliant Disaster: JFK, Castro, and America's Doomed Invasion of Cuba (Audiobook) Unabridged edition 2011 | 17 hours and 33 mins | ISBN: n/a, ASIN: B004V6AQ6W | MP3 80 kbps | 619 MB A remarkably gripping account of America's Bay of Pigs crisis, drawing on long-hidden CIA documents and delivering, as never before, the vivid truth - and consequences - of five pivotal days in April 1961. The U.S.-backed military invasion of Cuba in 1961 remains one of the most ill-fated blunders in American history, with echoes of the event reverberating even today. Despite the Kennedy administration's initial public insistence that the United States had nothing to do with the invasion, it soon became clear that the complex operation had been planned and approved by the best and brightest minds at the highest reaches of Washington, including the Joint Chiefs of Staff and President John F. Kennedy himself. The Cuban-born invaders were trained by CIA officers, supplied with American materiel, and shadowed by the U.S. Navy. Landing by sea with fighter-plane support, they hoped to establish a military beachhead and spark a counterrevolution against Fidel Castro's regime. The gambit was a stupendous failure, resulting in the death or imprisonment of more than a thousand men. Now, journalist Jim Rasenberger takes a closer look at this darkly fascinating incident in American history. At the heart of the crisis stood President Kennedy, and Rasenberger traces what Kennedy knew, thought, and said as events unfolded. He examines whether Kennedy was manipulated by the CIA into approving a plan that would ultimately involve the American military. He also draws compelling portraits of the other figures who played key roles in the drama, including Fidel Castro. Written with elegant clarity and narrative verve, The Brilliant Disaster is the most complete account of this event to date, providing not only a fast-paced chronicle of the disaster but an analysis of how it occurred - a question as relevant today as then - and how it profoundly altered the course of modern American history.
